Welcome! It is my pleasure to welcome you to this guide to the Kilwinning Segdoune Carnival and street party 2012. The event has been expanded due to the Public Holiday being announced for the 5th of June and will include extra entertainment and the evening ceilidh. A lot of work goes into preparing the event and deciding on how to take the event forward each year, so I very much hope everyone enjoys the day. I very much wish the committee of Promoting Kilwinning well for the future as I leave the group after the carnival, if anyone would like to be involved in the work of Promoting Kilwinning then please to speak Joe Broussard. Best Regards Donald Reid Event Organiser.

SEGDOUNE ROYAL PARTY 2012

This year’s Segdoune Royal selection evening took place in April when seven young ladies, all hopeful of being elected as Queen, attended ‘Playz’ Centre in Pennyburn accompanied by their parents. The judges, whose job was to perform the hard bit and select our Royal figurehead and her deputy, were the well-known local community campaigner Ann Robertson MBE and Jackie Browne, Chairperson of the event organisers Promoting Kilwinning. It was a difficult choice to make but the judges awarded the role of Segdoune Queen to Rachel Dean of Abbey Primary School with Shelly Smith of Pennyburn elected as her Depute. After being elected Queen, Rachel said ‘I’m very happy to have been chosen and I’m looking forward to my duties,’ whilst Shelly said she was ‘ecstatic’ to have been picked as Depute. From left to right: Front Row: Depute Queen Shelly Smith (Pennyburn PS) and Segdoune Queen Rachel Dean (Abbey). Back Row: Royal Party: Heather Lundie (St. Luke’s), Rachel Gorman (Whitehirst), Alice Dean (Corsehill), Demi Barr (Blacklands), and Chloe Blair (St Winning’s).

At school, Rachel likes art, music and gym. Her hobbies are dancing, cheerleading and hip-hop and she is also in the guides. Rachel has a white West Highland Terrier puppy named Lulu, who is very playful. ‘I am very proud to be part of Kilwinning’s history,’ she says, ‘I can’t wait to feel like a real princess on carnival day!’

HEATHER LUNDIE

Alice says that she is very happy to be a part of Kilwinning’s special day, especially as it coincides with the Jubilee of the Queen. A pupil at Corsehill, she likes art, PE and maths and her interests include dancing, netball, athletics and guides. Alice doesn’t have any pets at the moment but she would love to own a dog one day.

Demi barr

Demi tells us that she is ‘happy and proud’ to be selected as part of the Royal Party. The Blacklands pupil enjoys ICT and Art… and says that sometimes she enjoys PE too! Outside of school, her hobbies are netball, dancing and swimming. At home, Demi has several pets: a dog, a rabbit and two fish.

CHLOE BLAIR

St. Winning’s pupil Chloe enjoys art, maths, ICT and PE, as well as playing in her school’s netball team. Chloe tells us that street dancing and listening to music are her other hobbies. She also enjoys going shopping. She feels very excited about her role as this year’s St. Winning’s princess and is proud to have been selected.

SHELLY SMITH

PENNYBURN

Shelly, who is a house captain and monitor at school, says that she is excited and pleased to have been chosen as the Depute Queen. She has a dog named “Levi”, her favourite lessons are maths, art and gym, whilst in her spare time she does street dance, singing and makes cupcakes. Shelly also enjoys taking her two little brothers and her sister to the park.

RACHEL DEAN

ABBEY PRIMARY

This year’s Segdoune Queen is Rachel Dean who attends Abbey Primary School where she particularly enjoys her classes in art and ICT. When she is not at school, Rachel has quite a few hobbies. She told us, ‘I like gymnastics and I also take part in cheerleading. I enjoy playing the piano and baking too.’ As well as all her hobbies, she also finds time to look after her two pet rabbits “Blue” and “Belle” too! When asked how she felt about being chosen as Kilwinning’s 43rd Segdoune Queen in this special Jubilee year, Rachel said, ‘I’m happy and excited’.
