Fab House 2017-2018

Location: Germany, Fab-lab Kamp Lintfort

The role at the project: Project Leader, Instructor.

Duration: 10 Months

News: (Link)

The Fab House, is generally inspired by the tiny house movement and in particular by the Wikihouse and the Earthships, which favors not only environmentally friendly and affordable living but also a natural life and democratic house building.

FabHouse was made in a interdisciplinary course at Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences in winter term 2017-2018. We developed an open source self-sufficient house that can be reproduced in any of the >1400 Fab Labs worldwide and be deployed anywhere in the world. This vision is taken from the WikiHouse-Project, which “endeavors to democratize and simplify the construction of sustainable, resource-light dwellings“. However, the focus of this course was to not to simply copy it but to ‘Re-Think it’, driven by the goal of making it as sustainable as possible. This included not only the construction of the house and materials used, but also energy harvesting and management systems.

Eco-DesignSprint Approach

To create a new mindset of eco-friendly makers, we set up a so called Eco-Design-Sprint approach and applied this within our FabLab.

Eco-design projects involve intense research, more than conventional product design projects. This includes research about materials, technologies and target audiences. This can especially be confirmed for the context in which we applied the framework – a study course that aims to create a sustainable house, made in a fab lab. Because of this context, we also had to tailor the general approach of Ecodesign. The course does not address the typical target audience of product designers (for which the framework was made) nor commercialization (including sales) of the product.

The word ‘Sprint’ refers to the speed in which we applied it. Due to the weekly meetings as part of the course, we established a report-discuss-and-develop-practice

I was responsible at design and production of the house. Also, I led the students to design building systems and give feedbacks according to the Fab-House structure and to teaching them how to produce assembly parts with a CNC machine.

The FabHouse has an inverted roof shape, inspired by a leaf. It is collecting rainwater in the centre of the leaf –in it’s core. Kamp-Lintfort has continuous rainy weather. Almost every morning possible to see a good amount of water in the center of the leaves. I decided to use this form and idea to implement it to the house. The FabHouse construction system is based on three modules: Middle, corner (“caky”) and key modules. Key modules link all other modules and provide columns to carry the roof. Corner modules can be mirrored. Middle parts are used to stretch the space. All modules are growing around the core

Docendo Discimus Instrumantae 09-2018

Location: 4th Istanbul Design Biennial

The role at the project: Project Assistant

Duration:5 weeks + 1 month for the preparation

Website: (Link)

Docendo Discimus Instrumantae – meaning by teaching, we learn – proposes a workshop in which an international network of contributors share their experiences on robotic fabrication processes through online instructionSets. instructionSets are an experimental protocol for sharing digital making methodologies and documenting deviations and interpretations.

Docendo Discimus Instrumantae is a creative design process and exhibition piece for the 4th Istanbul Design Biennial 2018. Inspired by the concepts of French Movement “Oulipo”, Robotic Morphologies create patterns and forms through constrained design techniques. The work borrows the concept of Thieri Foulc’s 2D-ruled based Morpholo Game, to design the

Experience

During Bienal preparation, I did involve the project. Due to my curiosity for designing end effectors, I gained sufficient experience while working with Burcu biçer and Efe gözen. This project took five weeks, and every week we were installing a different end effector for foam cutting, wire-bending, weaving, milling, mixing and brick building. I gained unique experiences for every installation. For instance, the possible hazards while weaving carbon-fiber, how to create a bath for resin, while carbon-fiber weaving through what speed we should use for Kuka.

The robotic arm allows to produce specific high-quality, repeatable marbling effects not easily obtainable with traditional hand-marbling.

The inherent property of the foam’s low melting point and softness facilitates the production of desired shapes effortlessly formworks.

Robot’s precision makes it possible to achieve exceptional image fidelity with a milling depth of not even a fraction of a millimeter.

Carbonfiber is woven by the robot on a circular loom as the creation of lightweight volumetric architectural components is explored.

Under My Skin 2018

Location: Germany, Fab-Lab Kamp-Lintfort

The role at the project: Fabricademy Student

Duration: 3 Months

Under my skin is result of long time grieving experince.I aim to create an interactive costume which can mimic animal reaction in terms of fear, breed, and protection. The reason for making this project is coming from my previous emotional process. There was a time that I analyze every inch of my skin. I create an illusional distance between my soul and my body that cuase a feeling of a secon skin inside me. These trigger fealings lead me to study and mimic animal reactions. I’ve worked on two disciplines that paper folding and selfassembly. The idea of the structure is actually to explore the unpredicted movement of the air. And the main goal is to rule this movement with the airways. The system is working with two dc motors; one is vacuuming the other one is inflating contantly. The sensors are understanding a drastically change in the sweet glance on the skin and it is inflating and costume shape is changing by the force of air.

Digital Morphologies

Articulating nature can express in many forms in the case of literature, painting, sculpture, design, fashion, engineering, etc. Getting inspired by nature, learning from nature is one of the strongest methodology. These studies are based on parametric modeling entegrated with additive manufacturing. The behavior of the material took into consideration as the main subject. All objects printed without support.

1. According to Alan Schoen; A gyroid is an infinitely connected triply periodic minimal surface. I think there is no coincidence that a flower follows a gyroid surface structure to create a surface with minimum energy.

2. My form research with wood braches continues with their growing parameters. I designed a box and destroyed from their random node points. I printed with a flexible PLA. And suddenly my box became a sponge. So fascinating that following simple rules for the create a volume and these rules are making structure by itself.

3.Most dinoflagellates have a peculiar form of the nucleus, called a dinokaryon, in which the chromosomes are attached to the nuclear membrane. I try to mimic this form with studying grasshopper. The inner side of the organisms is empty.

The role at the project: Individual Project

Duration: 2 Months

50 dijital joint Cutting-Files: (click to see)

During June and July 2015 I applied for a 2-month Erasmus+ Internship in WeMake. My aim was to learn to design and produce furnitures with a CNC router. They proposed me to work on 50 digital joints project to make all the files available for WeMake CNC router.

Jochen Gros created this amazing digital wood joints under CC license. This project was my first experience with CNC cutting and wood joints. I produced all pieces within 1 month with zero background in digital fabrication.

Bio plastic 3d printer

Location: Germany

Duration: 1 Week

Due to my curiosity to additively fabricate bio-polymer structures, I decided to make my own Gelatine-based bio-plastic 3D printer. The main challenge was to design syringe system and integrated with extruder’s step motor. The distance between every convolution of worm gear made the material extrude faster than I expected. Than I’ve changed the worm gear with more intense distance the problem has removed it.

Hidden Gem

Location: Turkey

Duration: 2 Weeks

Hidden Gem is a new promise for an alternative future of the material, which resembles roughly carved mines and was taken from the underground. The low-poly pellicular shape is also reminiscent of the digital age. In addition to that the rocky shape of the lamp produced by 3D printing technology and molded by it.

Hidden gem to demonstrate the malleability and durability of biomaterials. The hexagonal part of the product contains dense activated carbon particles that can contribute to the air quality of space by filtering particles around it

Bachelor Projects

20132017

Location: Istanbul, Kadir Has University

Studying interior architecture and environmental design in Istanbul precluded me novel experimentations. Due to the academic program of the university was leading to design projects more about social physiology in the space. I tried to find a way out to study more about the cognitive design. I developed my parametric design knowledge by exploring surface studies and relation with mathematic formulas. These are the some of my projects during my bachelor degree.
