BABAK GOLKAR THE RETURN PROJECT September 24 – November 8, 2014 By Qadeer Ahmad Siddiqui Dubai UAE: abak has developed a distinct practice that engages critical investigation and renegotiation of spaces between cultural and socioeconomical registers. With The Return Project, the artist seamlessly operates inside, and positions his work within, the parameters of a commercial system, interjecting the value constructs governing the contemporary art world. The project dismantles the artistic object and the artistic persona within their own contemporary systemic conditions by skewing the established points of r e f e r e n c e s a n d relationships that seemingly authorize how and where the true value of art resides. An object is purchased from a store and brought to the studio for photo documentation. The object is then dissected, collaged and reconstructed into a new consumer article and photo documented in its new state. The two photographs, forming a diptych, are printed in the same scale as the original object. Throughout the process original tags and labels are kept intact. The new object, accompanied by the tags and receipt are then returned to the store for a full refund. The store’s return policy (often 7-10 days) determines the timeframe for the studio process. The returned object – that is, the art object - enters and circulates in the inventory of the store and is
B
once again available for sale, but at the store’s determined price. The leftover cut-off pieces from the reconstruction process are reassembled to form a residual object to accompany the diptych. A small gesture in the large scheme, each action is planned and executed around a particular concept and is autonomous. Aside from the method that determines the project, each piece/action zooms in on a contemporary issue at stake, ranging from geopolitics and global economy to cultural shortcomings and a r t h i s t o r i c a l limitations.Taking a stance, yet equally embracing the inherent anonymity, The Return Project, operates within and disrupts the limits of policies in systems that offer goods in a competitive market. The Return Project employs notions of performativity through two, often disproportionate, contexts that of everyday retail and the rarefaction of the gallery context.

LEXUS RC F CLAIMS ONE-TWO FINISH IN FOURTH ROUND OF SUPER GT500 CHAMPIONSHIP ZENT CERUMO’s triumph at the Sugo raceway continues the blistering performance of Lexus Racing cars this season By Qadeer Ahmad Siddiqui Dubai UAE: he ZENT CERUMO racing team of Yuji Tachikawa & Kohei Hirate driving their #1 Lexus RC F secured their
T
first win of the season by clinching Round 4 of the 2014 AUTOBACS Super GT series (GT500 class) which took place at the Sugo International raceway in Japan on 20 July, 2014. The KeePer TOM Lexus RC F team of Daisuke Ito & Andrea Caldarelli finished second as Lexus RC F vehicles dominated the action, securing four of the top 5 positions. The reigning Super GT500 class champions, the ZENT CERUMO team had a time of 1:47'49.984 to win the 79-lap race. With this latest win, ZENT CERUMO driver Tachikawa becomes the sole holder of the record for most GT500 victories, with 16 wins now to his credit, while for Hirate, the weekend triumph at the Sugo raceway marks his sixth win overall. Meanwhile, the secondplace finish in Round 4 has propelled the KeePer TOM Lexus RC F team to the top of this season’s points table.According to Takayuki Yo s h i t s u g u , C h i e f Representative, Middle East and North Africa Representative Office, T O Y O TA M o t o r Corporation, “Lexus Racing cars have delivered outstanding performances all season long, and the one-two finish at Sugo raceway provides further confirmation of the extraordinary quality and durability of these highperformance machines. Motorsports provides an important platform for Lexus to showcase the limitless possibilities of its cars, and our consistent success at some of the most grueling race events this year will encourage us to strive even harder in our quest to be a recognized
leader in the world of motorsports. In an exciting contest marked by intermittent rain and multiple position changes, the ZENT CERUMO team’s decision to stick with slick tyres even as a number of others dived into the pits for wet tyres proved to be a masterstroke, as the rain cleared shortly to give the ZENT team a 20-second lead. The car had a good balance in the race, so just by running normally I was able to keep building a lead,” ZENT driver Kohei Hirate said. “We never knew when it was going to start raining again so I pushed and tried to build up as much of a lead as I could, and eventually I was able to turn the car over to (codriver) Tachikawa with about a 20-second lead. The race started under cloudy skies, with rain falling shortly after the start. Reckoning the rain might continue, the pole-starting PETRONAS TOM RC F immediately returned to the pit to change to rain tyres, as did the 2nd-place starter 1 0 0 R AY B R I G N S X CONCEPT-GT, only for the rain to cease abruptly by the 5th lap, forcing the teams that had changed to rain tyres to return to the pit once again to change back to slick tyres, thus handing them a hefty time loss. Making the most of this turn of events were KeePer TOM, who zoomed from 5th position on the grid to the head of the pack, and ZENT CERUMO, who clawed their way to 2nd place having started from the 11th position. With the ZENT’s team’s pace exceeding that of KeePer TOM's, they finally moved clear on the 18th lap to take the lead, and held on admirably through the end to be first past the checkered flag. The next round of the Super GT series is scheduled to take place at the Fuji International Speedway in the second week of August.

The ever improving 19 handicapped golfer fired in 9 gross pars showing maturity and skill beyond his handicap level, and I am sure with ability like this he will soon find himself close to a single digit handicap by the end of next season. Five points adrift were two up and coming promising golfers, Pakistani 18 year old junior Mukhzar Mehmood and 19 year old Indian golfer Sinar Suraj. With both golfers playing in the afternoon and finishing on 37 a scorecard countback had to settle the positions, on this occasion it was Mehmood who came home in 18 points who sneaked into the afternoon’s runner-up spot.During the mornings rounds quite surprisingly

banks and make an informed decision of what is best for you and your lifestyle, explains Chehab. Previously, comparing a range of banking products meant calling each bank to ask for more information. compareit4me.qa takes this out of the equation and allows its users to easily search through a myriad of offerings and even apply for t h e p r o d u c t s online.Comparison websites remain nascent in the Middle East unlike in developed markets such as the United Kingdom, where more than 52 per cent of residents had used comparison websites to compare banking and insurance products, as per RS Consulting’s latest survey.compareit4me is actively working to highlight the potential of comparison websites in the region and has seen its UAE site as an impressive success story, which they hope to replicate in Qatar. Chehab says the emergence of this segment bodes well for both consumers and banks. compareit4me was built to help consumers make accurate financial decisions, but we also help the banks achieve their goals. By displaying and comparing various offers, we help banks connect with motivated and informed users, who have already gone through the research phase and are now ready to commit,” he adds.

innovation. Made by heating the mixed powders at 1800°C in an over pressure atmosphere of nitrogen, it is known for its s u p e r i o r w e a r resistance. The ‘old bronze’ colour gives the watch case a rugged, lived-in appearance. This is a watch that seems to have a story or two to tell about where it has been. The choice of leather for the strap adds to the windswept and mysterious appeal of this undeniably cool and manly timepiece.Hard as nails, light as a feather:The materials may give this DiaMaster its look, but it is the movement that gives the watch its soul. Rado innovations are usually seen in the materials used for the outside of our watches – this DiaMaster also has a Rado innovation on the inside.
Lightness and comfort are two qualities that are always taken into consideration at the design stage of a new Rado watch. As the Si3N4 TiN that is used for the RHW1 is half the weight of high-tech ceramic Rado usually uses, it was important to develop a movement that was equally light, but that suited the personality of the watch. The first stage was to remove the oscillating weight, so this had to be a hand-winding mechanical watch. Next the plates and the bridge, which are traditionally made in brass were replaced by lightweight aluminium. Aluminium is known for its low density and, therefore, for its lightness as well as its durability. In order to make the aluminium parts even more durable, they have been anodised to increase their hardness.

The UAE consumer is open to a dose of humour, quirky facts, and willing to read into the nuances of a tongue-incheek, abstract message delivered in a few words. By contrast, that approach is unlikely to work for the broad spectrum of Saudi consumers wherein the marketer should consider a straight-to-the-point message or storyline that is easy to understand, while guiding the consumer to take specific action,he suggested.TNS MENA’s unique syndicated programme, ‘TNS Brand & Ad Health Tracking Norms’, reflects actual consumer decision-making, with specific focus on Middle Eastern brands.
