KFC ARABIA CAMPAIGN EXPECTED TO REACH ONE BILLION CONSUMERS WORLDWIDE By Qadeer Ahmad Siddiqui Dubai UAE:

T

he huge success of a regional campaign created by KFC MENA - part of the renowned Americana Group featuring the world’s number one soccer player Cristiano Ronaldo, has resulted in the initiative going global. The KFC MENA team at Americana Group is taking the campaign to KFC’s international markets, where it is expected to reach one billion consumers worldwide. The KFCRonaldo campaign was the brainchild of the KFC Arabia regional marketing team at Americana Group, which has extensive experience in dealing with celebrities to produce mega advertising initiatives that appeal to the Arabian consumer,” said Hesham Tahssin, Regional Marketing Director, KFC MENA, Americana Group. “What is particularly significant in this case is that such marketing campaigns are usually implemented in the Middle East after their global success. This is the first time that creative Arab minds have resulted in a local initiative that is to be launched globally,he added. The regional KFC-Ronaldo campaign featured the world’s best football player endorsing the KFC ‘so good taste’ in Arabic. The strategy proved to be the perfect recipe for success, as it resulted in an increase in sales for

KFC across the region. The success of the regional KFC-Ronaldo initiative resulted in KFC MENA scooping an Effie at the Effie Mena Awards 2013, the region’s premium marketing

awards programme. In addition, KFC MENA marketing team was asked to present the campaign at KFC’s most recent global marketing planning meeting. The decision was then taken to extend the campaign to KFC’s global markets by passing it on from the Middle East to the world. The initial KFC-Ronaldo campaign promoted KFC’s ‘so good taste’ in 74 cities across 12 markets in the Middle East region, which is home to over 600 stores. The global initiative this year will involve 4,000 KFC restaurants worldwide, operating in 23 markets across three continents. It is expected to generate a great deal of interest and excitement in KFC’s core market demographic of 18-34 year old football fans.

GROWTH OF AVIATION SECTOR UNDERPINNING OCCUPIER DEMAND ACROSS INDUSTRIAL PROPERTY LANDSCAPE IN DUBAI AND ABU DHABI By Qadeer Ahmad Siddiqui Dubai UAE:

S

ince opening as a cargo hub in June 2010, Al Maktoum International Airport at Dubai World Central has quickly expanded, with passenger services commencing seven months ago. The emerging aerotropolis sits at the centre of Dubai's future, with the near by Expo 2020 site, residential and commercial cities and Jebel Ali Freezone all set to play a crucial role in the long term evolution of the emirate's economy, Etihad Rail's announcement last month that freight line stations in both Jebel Ali Port and Al Maktoum International are under consideration will no doubt further enhance the appeal of the area to industrial and logistics firms.Cluttons International Research and Business Development Manager, Faisal Durrani comments:Following the Expo 2020 announcement in November, we have certainly recorded stronger demand from occupiers for areas in and around Al Maktoum International Airport and Jebel Ali. The unveiling of Etihad Rail's freight line through the area will further enhance the appeal of a base at DWC.Furthermore, reports this week have confirmed that both Dubai International Airport and Al Maktoum Airport will continue to operate side by side, with the latter likely to emerge as a new hub for Emirates some time in the mid 2 0 2 0 ' s . We e x p e c t t h a t t h e announcement will help lift occupier demand levels further as the speculation on the future of our city's two airports will now gradually fade as plans are finalised for both DXB and DWC.Durrani adds: As occupier demand levels rise in submarkets around DWC, we anticipate the expansion of freezones where possible and an increased amount of speculative warehouse development, particularly as these areas approach saturation. The economic vibrancy,

which has been underpinned in part by the tourism and hospitality sectors is expected to contribute significantly to the rise in the number of purpose built facilities.Dubai Industrial City (DIC) for instance, is reporting strong occupancy levels, with a vacancy rate of just 5%. 158 new companies joined DIC last year and a sharp upturn in revenue from warehouse and land leases was also reported, both of which rose by 52% and 44%, respectively.Similarly, rents in Dubai Investments Park (DIP) for industrial units have continued to move upwards. Activity at DIP remains dominated by distribution, light manufacturing, food and beverage (F&B) and cold storage companies, fuelled by the buoyancy in the hospitality sector. The latter added an estimated 500,000 jobs to the UAE economy last year, according to the World Travel and Tourism Council.Cluttons also anticipates Techno Park, which sits just opposite Dubai Logistics City, to record an uptake in occupier interest as the surrounding freezones reach full capacity. Techno Park is likely to emerge as a particular favourite due to its strategic positioning between Sheikh Zayed Road (E11) and Mohammed Bin Zayed Road (E311) and also due to its proximity to Al Maktoum International Airport.Durrani concludes:Elsewhere in the UAE, industrial occupier focus also remains centred on emerging multinodal hubs. In Abu Dhabi for instance, the importance of Abu Dhabi International Airport continues to gather pace, aided by the brisk expansion of Etihad Airways, which is underpinning the importance of the airport as an air cargo hub. This is evidenced by both the swift letting of warehouses at Logistics Park and the number of enquiries being reported. This is a pattern we expect to persist.

EVERGREEN APPLE NIGERIA TO LAUNCH NEW NAME AND BRANDING AT EBACE 2014 By Qadeer Ahmad Siddiqui Dubai UAE:

E

vergreen Apple Nigeria will be presenting a new look and feel for the company at this year’s E u r o p e a n B u s i n e s s Av i a t i o n Convention and Exhibition (EBACE). It will be announcing a new name,EAN Av i a t i o n ” a n d promoting a revamped brand to exhibition attendees on the AfBAA booth 5542. Initially known as Evergreen Apple Nigeria, the brand refresh has been implemented following an expansion in the type of aviation services offered by the company, and the need to have the name reflect the core b u s i n e s s a c t i v i t y. Wi t h t h e clarification of identity, EAN Aviation will be well positioned to continue to develop an internationally recognised aviation business. EAN Aviation launched as a full service FBO quickly developing local, FAA and EASA maintenance capabilities. Executive aviation dining provider Wings Inflight catering followed soon after. At last year’s EBACE the company announced it had signed a representation agreement with Gulfstream Aerospace (a General Dynamics Company) which sees EAN Aviation promoting the sale of new Gulfstream aircraft within Nigeria. Segun Demuren, EAN Aviation’s CEO, initiated the popular annual Nigerian Business Aviation Conference, NBAC, which had its second outing in March this year. The company also arranges aircraft charter services, executive aviation ground handling at Lagos Murtala Mohammed Airport and provides office leasing services in its airport facility.Since launching Evergreen Apple Nigeria has continued to expand its range of aviation services so we needed a name that reflected

this. The existing name has regularly been shortened to EAN by the aviation community so to some extent the process has already begun, says Segun Demuren CEO.However neither the names Evergreen or EAN indicate that aviation is our principal

activity, so for the sake of clarity we have chosen to rebrand with a new name that incorporates the term aviation. EAN Aviation clearly states the sector we are involved in and builds on a name already familiar within the industry. The new logo which was designed by Etu-Odi a Lagos based advertising agency is simplified and aims to depict the personality of the new EAN Aviation brand warm, luxurious, passionate and customer focused at all times. The deep blue colour is a subtle reference to EAN’s personality which aims to be reliable, professional and responsive to customer needs. We always aim to exceed customer’s expectations and hope the new logo inspires trust and confidence in our offering, adds Demuren.Etu-Odi has worked with EAN from inception so understands the business and how it has changed. The team has created a vibrant, professional new style for us and we look forward to presenting it to the delegates concludes Demuren. A new EAN Aviation website w w w. e a n . a e r o m i r r o r i n g t h e refreshed design has been launched and delegates attending EBACE will be given stationary also reflecting the new look and feel.

This was highlighted at the AfBAA Symposium held in September 2013. AfBAA took up the challenge and within nine months has successfully created a fund that aims to support continued growth and development of the Business Aviation market at a time when securing finances is still a barrier for aircraft acquisition in many countries. Further details of the fund will be announced at Europe’s premier business aviation event, the E u r o p e a n B u s i n e s s Av i a t i o n Convention and Exhibition, EBACE in Geneva beginning May 22nd this year. The show was supported by a range of companies and OEMS Beechcraft, Cessna, Dassault, Embraer, and Gulfstream displayed a total of fourteen aircraft on the static. group of The Higher Colleges of Technology (HCT) Dubai Computer Information Science (CIS) students, Sutton International and Enterprise Systems have collaborated to install a wireless network at Al Noor Training Centre for Children with Special Needs. The Al Noor Training Centre has several rooms on two levels, with about 120 networked computers and only three wireless access points. To assist students and staff at the Centre, HCT-Dubai CIS students engaged on an ambitious, hands-on student project to install a wireless network across the large Dubai campus. This project required the involvement of industry stakeholders, as well as the injection of additional funds to cover the cost of materials. The goal of the project was to create a ‘Learning by Doing’ experience for the colleges’ CIS Networking students. Not only did the project provide an important community service by extending the wireless network to all areas of Al

Much of this growth has been realized here in the Gulf,” said Tony Tyler, IATA’s Director General and CEO. About 1,000 delegates and journalists are expected to attend the AGM. The program includes a CEO Forum on the first day of the AGM, featuring David Barger, CEO, JetBlue Airways; Ivan Chu, CEO, Cathay Pacific; Andreas Conesa Labastida, CEO, Aeromexico; and Willie Walsh, Chief Executive, International Airlines Group. CNN International Business Correspondent Richard Quest will moderate the session. This AGM will be a special one because the commercial airline industry is celebrating its 100th birthday. The governments in the Gulf are among those strategically using aviation as an economic catalyst. And I think that it will be a great place not only to celebrate our first 100 years, but also to look ahead to aviation’s next century, said Tyler.

This is to allow our assistive Technology programme to be taken to the next level. A huge difference to what we can offer our students. We were happy to support the Al Noor Training Centre. It is imperative that our students learn how things work in the real world and the ‘learning by doing’ project gave them that opportunity. Crucially, it was also an important service to the community, it’s win-win,” Dr. Saoud Al Mulla, Director of HCT-Dubai Colleges, said.Initially, the HCT was going to donate their used networking equipment to the school but then Enterprise Systems, a partner of Al Noor Training Centre, heard of the

concepts of sustainability to farflung regions. The YFEL program is open to UAE national and international graduate students and young professionals, while the Summer Research Internship and the Ektashif programs are offered to UAE national undergraduates.Dr. Lamya Fawwaz, Executive Director, Public Affairs, Masdar Institute said:The support and vision of the UAE Leadership has been instrumental in highlighting the importance of renewable energy sources, sustainability and the need to find solutions to these global issues. As such, the Outreach initiatives offer students and young professionals an opportunity to obtain in-depth knowledge on sustainability, renewable energy and climate change and work towards finding these solutions. Due to the multiple options these initiatives offer for development in these fields, the 3 programs have become increasingly popular among a growing number of students.Yamrot Amha, YFEL member and student of Water and Environmental Engineering, said: “Through my training with YFEL I have become a more confident leader, who is ready to make an impact using the

knowledge I have gained. Furthermore, I was given a chance to attend the 22nd World Energy

Forum in South Korea and interact and engage with the leading global energy professionals because of the YFEL program. In addition, Masdar Institute’s Summer Research Internship program for UAE national undergraduate students aims to nurture qualified university students with a penchant for research and innovation and inspire them to gain additional knowledge. In 2013, the program offered a total of nine research projects for the interns to learn from, focusing on water, solar energy and fuel cells areas that are identified as strategically important to the UAE.Through the program, six interns receive an opportunity to gain new insights into applying their knowledge in technical and laboratory skills. This year, intern Hend Al Zeyoudi, who worked during the summer under the

guidance of Dr. Tariq Shamim, Head of Mechanical Engineering, coauthored a scientific research paper that won international acclaim at the 17th Asia Pacific Automotive Engineering Conference held in Bangkok. It was titled ‘Effect of Ambient Conditions on the Performance of an Open-Cathode PEM Fuel Cell Stack: Case Study United Arab Emirates’. Many of the projects to be offered under Summer Research Internship this year will focus on solar cell and biomass research. There is also a training program for students on how to operate electron microscopes and work in a ‘Clean Room’ to fabricate advanced materials and devices on the micron and sub-micron scale. (For inquiries, please contact: internships@masdar.ac.ae) Another Masdar Institute outreach initiative is the two-week ‘Ektashif ’ residential program, which brings together talented UAE undergraduate engineering and science students to learn about renewable energy, sustainability and the environment. In the summer of 2013, a total of 22 UAE national undergraduates concluded their experience with a variety of hands-on laboratory workshops. The program this summer will run in August, with nominations now being accepted. Students wishing to participate in Ektashif this summer need to have nominating letters sent by their Department Head or Dean to the Masdar Institute Outreach program. (For inquiries, please contact: outreach@masdar.ac.ae)Maryam Rashed AlMazrouei, Chemical Engineering student at UAEU and Ektashif participant, said, “I always wondered what was happening up there in Masdar Institute and I really wanted to discover it. The Ektashif program gave me that chance, and it was one of the best experiences I ever had. I learnt new things about lasers, electronics, biofuel and other technologies. These outreach initiatives not only give potential students an indication of what to expect at Masdar Institute but also inspire them towards taking up subjects in sustainability for Master’s studies.

PARMIGIANI FLEURIER LAUNCHES ITS TONDA MÉTRO COLLECTION IN THE MIDDLE EAST, AVAILABLE EXCLUSIVELY THROUGH DAMAS Swiss watchmaker celebrates the UAE launch with a unique exhibition of urban-inspired Dubai and Abu Dhabi photographs at the Empty Quarter Gallery in Dubai By Qadeer Ahmad Siddiqui Dubai UAE:

P

restige Swiss watchmaker Parmigiani Fleurier launches t o d a y i t s To n d a M é t r o collection in the UAE, a range of men's and women's watches whose lines and essence embody the spirit and magic of great cities. The collection features "Métrographe" watches for men and "Métropolitaine" watches for women. With this collection entirely manufactured in steel, Parmigiani Fleurier creates a new entry price point for its existing range of products, while keeping completely in line with the values of authenticity and independence that are particular to the brand within the watch industry. As such, all Tonda Métro collection watches have an open back case, allowing their owner to marvel at an automatic mechanical movement that is completely finished and decorated by hand in the brand’s workshops in Fleurier. To celebrate the launch of the collection in the UAE, and its direct inspiration from cosmopolitan landscapes and proportions, Parmigiani Fleurier invited four Gulf-based photographers, through a partnership with the Empty Quarter Gallery, to showcase some of their never-seenbefore artwork in Dubai. With images from photographers Sarah Abudawood, Al Moutasim Al

Maskery, Daniel Cheong and Alisdair Miller, around the cosmopolitan t h e m e “ A C i t y i n Ti m e ” , t h e watchmaker set up a unique, pop-up photo exhibition in the DIFC, to be visible on May 19 only.Through simple, streamlined, essential designs and the choice of lighter materials, the Tonda Métro collection addresses a younger customer, who is mostly considering one watch to be worn from day to night. The UAE is a great place to echo the cosmopolitan inspiration behind this collection, with its futuristic landscapes and record-breaking skyscrapers, said Jean-Marc Jacot, CEO of Parmigiani Fleurier. We felt strongly that launching an urban inspired collection here in Dubai, more than anywhere else in the world, required a direct connection and homage to the UAE residents, artists and photographers which help shape the city’s unique personality. We are proud and delighted to have had the chance to work with the Empty Quarter Gallery to exhibit 24 large prints of the UAE’s cities’ scene, as these directly reflect the spirit of our Tonda Métro collection. Both the men's and women's versions are characterised by their long proportions, which confer elegance. The calibre 3000 movement and its housing have been designed with extreme precision to produce a slim, refined case middle. The subtlety of the Métro collection - a slight imbalance which gives it its character - comes from the fact that the watch is asymmetrical: it has two different profiles. Its left-hand profile, which is devoid of a crown, is the classic, conventional side, and displays the brand's iconic teardrop shape. By contrast, its right-hand profile features elongated lugs which

extend to the crown, reaching around it to envelop the chronograph pushbuttons on the men's version. This asymmetry confers on the watch its subtly stylish identity; a touch of modernity that overturns conventions. The aesthetics of the dials in the Métro collection use the principle of contrasts to highlight a particular aspect of the piece. On the men's Tonda Métrographe, the chronograph complication is underlined thanks to the highlighting of its minute and hour counters. The grey counters, which sit on top of snailed discs, stand out against the white grained dial; on the black dial version they are outlined with Superluminova material which picks them out in the daytime and renders them luminous at night. The two

counters form a slanted figure 8, a characteristic sign of the Parmigiani Fleurier brand. On the Tonda Métropolitaine, feminine curves soften the piece's modern lines. The straight outline of the case finds its contrast in the "flinqué" finishes on the dial, which take the form of undulating waves. The numerals and index are inlaid, standing out in rounded relief from a twodimensional background characterised by straight lines. The Métro collection sees Parmigiani Fleurier introduce a new concept featuring straps and bracelets in leather and steel. The grained calf leather with Hermès signature produces a very distinctive effect. Its edge is of a different colour and polished, giving it a perfectly smooth surface in contrast with the rest. For example, a caramel-coloured strap features a bright red edge; a black strap is edged in white; étoupe is twinned with a grey edge for a subtle contrast. Each version of the Tonda Métro, both men's and women's, is also available with a steel bracelet of remodelled design. In keeping with the spirit of the collection, the bracelets' proportions have been redesigned to produce a slimmer, elongated and more streamlined appearance for a more aesthetically pleasing case. The links which form the profile of the steel bracelet feature Parmigiani Fleurier's iconic teardrop shape. Each link has unique dimensions, and is precisely calculated to ensure optimal ergonomics and perfect continuity between the case middle and the bracelet. The Tonda Métro collection is available exclusively in Damas stores across Dubai.

ob-creating foreign investment in France” provides an analysis of the source, nature and breakdown of foreign job-creating investments in France, as recorded by the Invest in France Agency (IFA) and its regional partners. In 2013, job-creating foreign investment maintained its upward trend, with a stronger contribution to employment than in 2012: France attracted 685 new projects, compared with 693 in 2012. These investment decisions enabled 29,631 jobs to be created or retained, up from 25,908 in 2012. The results, announced by President Hollande on February 17th in Paris at a Strategic Attractiveness Council meeting attended by around 35 foreign business leaders, highlight the resilience of France’s investment attractiveness in 2013 amid slow economic growth in Europe. The United States remained the leading source country, despite the number of investment decisions falling from 156 in 2012 to 122 in 2013, accounting for 18% of all foreign investments. Europe was responsible for 61% of new projects, compared with 58% the previous year. Germany was again the leading European investor and second overall after the United States, with 106 projects. Italy remained the second ranked European country, with 64 investment decisions. Several European source countries saw their results increase significantly, most notably the United Kingdom, Belgium, the Netherlands, Sweden and Austria. The proportion of projects from emerging economies continued to grow, accounting for 11% of all foreign investments, with 44 countries in all investing in France, up from 39 in 2012. China remained the eighth largest investor overall, with 33 projects, preceded by Japan with 35. France continued to attract investments from GCC with 13 investment

projects in 2 0 1 3 , enabling 514 jobs to be created or retained. Saudi Arabia and the UAE remained the l e a d i n g s o u r c e country in GCC, with 8 projects. Other GCC countries recorded r i s e s , including Qatar and Bahrain. Investment projects from GCC are mainly related to production activities (chemical industry, plastics, aeronautics) and decision centers (primo-implantation).The structure of investment projects has increased added value with the establishment of 2 R&D centers. The number of foreign investment projects in R&D, engineering and design operations rose sharply from 58 in 2012 to reach an all-time high of 77 investment decisions in 2013. There was a 13% increase in R&D projects (51), with the leading investors hailing from the United States, Germany and Japan, accounting for 30%, 13% and 9%, respectively, of foreign R&D investment. The digital sector, which spurs innovation across all industries, was the leading recipient of foreign investment in France, as it has been since 2011.The n u m b e r o f i n v e s t m e n t s i n

production/manufacturing activities, which had been falling since 2010, rose again in 2013 to 209 decisions, compared with 194 in 2012. These projects accounted for 11,829 jobs, or 40% of jobs generated by foreign investment. Germany was the leading foreign investor in this area with 41 projects, accounting for 20% of all production/manufacturing investments. There was a considerable increase in takeovers of ailing sites, with 65 such projects compared with 29 in 2012, leading to a 50% rise in the number of jobs maintained. We are very pleased to see France break a new record in 2013 for the number of GCC investment decisions, especially in manufacturing activities and R&D operations, which have doubled from 2012 to 2013. This outstanding result confirms the quality of France’s innovation ecosystem, all thanks to the creativity of France’s talented individuals and the government’s bold policies that are appreciated by foreign investors, commented Mr. Salim Saïfi, chief representative of Invest in France Agency in the Middle East.
