NEXTANT G90XT ON PACE FOR YEAR END DELIVERIES • Nextant has taken deliveries of first set of General Electric H75 engines • First test aircraft is currently undergoing Nextant “Remanufacturing” design process • Initial customer response to G90XT extremely positive By Qadeer Ahmad Siddiqui Dubai UAE:
N
extant Aerospace (“Nextant”), maker of the Nextant 400XTi the world’s only remanufactured business jet and the forthcoming G90XT turboprop, today announced that it has taken delivery of the first shipped set of General Electric H75 engines and is on track to start customer deliveries of the Nextant G90XT turboprop by yearend. The delivery marks a significant milestone for both the G90XT and the European-made GE H75 engines that will power it.We are proud to announce that our G90XT development program is underway, said Nextant President Sean McGeough. Our first aircraft is well into Nextant’s Remanufacturing design process and we plan to start test flights this summer. The G90XT development process has greatly benefited from the strong collaboration with GE to optimize the propulsion system for the G90XT. Together with the enhanced Garmin G1000 Flight Deck, integrated electronic engine control and singlelever power control we will produce an aircraft with superior safety, reliability and performance. The G90XT will feature the ultra-low maintenance GE H75 engines which is both FAA and EASA certified. The
state-of-the-art H75 engines do not require hot sections or fuel nozzle maintenance. With a time between overhaul of 4,000 hours or 8,000 cycles, the engines are virtually maintenance free for years. The cost savings from reduced maintenance requirements coupled with the H75’s lower fuel burn should mean a significant reduction in the G90XT’s operating costs, said Brad Mottier, Vice President and General Manager of the Business and General Aviation and Integrated Systems organizations at GE Aviation. “We look forward to verifying these savings during test f l i g h t s . G E ’s s t a t e - o f - t h e - a r t manufacturing facility in Prague, Czech Republic will also be home to Nextant’s EMEA completions showroom. Customers from across the region will be able to both tour the manufacturing facility and choose the cabin specification for their Nextant aircraft. The aircraft will be supported by Nextant’s extensive network of owned and authorized service centers, complemented by GE’s global service network. Spares will be strategically placed in the regions as customer deliveries increase. Nextant recently announced an expanded customer service team with a 27/4 hotline for immediate trouble shooting anytime, anywhere.
changing environmental conditions is also a cause of major concern. In line with these alarming reports, Panasonic is determined to help combat the rapid increase and prevalence of respiratory diseases and has launched the Middle East’s largest air-volume humidifying air purifier the F-VXK90M. Unveiled at a gala ceremony at the beautiful Bab Al Shams Resort & Spa, amidst the pristine set-up of an Arabic theme, this new Air Purifier by Panasonic is a nanoe powered, high-end premium model that is especially tailor-made to suit the requirements of the Middle Eastern consumers.Speaking at the launch and whilst announcing the new product, Mr Hiroo Ikeda, General Manager, Eco Solutions Division, Panasonic Marketing Middle East & Africa, said, “An estimated 300 million people have been diagnosed with asthma, with an expected increase to 400 million by 2025, according to the data from the World Health Organization. Reports also clearly indicate that there has been undoubtedly an increased prevalence of asthma in the MENA region over the past several decades. Air purifiers can be very beneficial to asthma patients and to non-asthmatic patients as it is used to remove impurity from indoor air. With this new product we are committed to providing a healthy lifestyle. With a sleek and stylish outer body, the new air purifier is designed intricately with an inbuilt pre-filter which is washable and fitted to protect against the sand storm. The model is also equipped with 5 sensors: Human motion, Light, Humidity, Odor and Dirt sensors. The Panasonic patented nanoe technology embedded within the Air Purifier emits long-life micro particles wrapped in water molecules which can penetrate into fabrics thoroughly and reach in far corners to decompose viruses and allergens. OH
bringing a fresh living environment. The HEPA filters, which are composed of high quality and randomly arranged fibers, are also worth commending within this model. Panasonic’s HEPA Filters quipped with Super Alleru Buster, Green Tea Catechin & Anti Bacteria Enzyme enhance purifying function inhibiting 17 kinds of virus, bacteria and allergen up to 99%. Likewise the humidifying filter within the Air Purifiers does not get jammed easily, retaining a large amount of moisture and enabling easy vaporization. It also helps keep skin hydrated and has the maximum humidifying capacity of 830ml / Hour. It also has a large opening to the 4.2L water tank which is easy to clean even at the bottom.Another unique feature within the F-VXK90M is the “Mega Catcher” that facilitates powerful suction of dusts within 30cm above the floor. The “Mega Catcher” opens when house dusts & allergens are detected.Among the different features of Panasonic F-VXK90M, the Econavigator function is perhaps one that should be highlighted. This feature enables the air purifier to act like having its own mind. The intelligent sensors reduce the consumption of energy and also operate automatically before pollutants spread inside the room, therefore reducing the need for stronger air volume after they disperse. Similarly, the air purifier has the capacity to sense the activity from human movements to adjust the suction power. It helps to prevent pollutants and dusts from spread out due to human movements by advance suction.Last but not the least, equipped with an energy saving light sensor, the Air Purifier has an indication panel that highlights the condition of air within the room. The Air Purifier will available in a glossy black finish with an Arabic Mosaic Pattern will be made available across the Middle East through leading electronic stores.

said:Edgar’s research studies human mobility decision under low carbon building and transport systems. His study has a very positive contribution to the deployment of sustainable technology. His research focuses on how human beings adapt to harsh weather conditions with different mobility choices when moving around the city. His study provides fundamental contribution to which sustainable technology should be developed to enhance human mobility in future urban systems.About his
research, Baca said: Productivity is important because it is directly tied to the social and economic aspects of sustainabilityV the third being environmental.By developing a modeling approach that characterizes this effect, it becomes possible to apply this knowledge towards a more sustainable urban design where all the passive elements of an urban system are optimized for productivity, health, and energy consumption. In addition to this, I also took part in the development of an axiomatic designbased approach for the enumeration of passenger degrees of freedom in a transportation system. The 2014 Toyota Scholar spent his two-week customary ‘Japan Experience’ that revolved around sustainability efforts by companies, government offices, and NGOs in Japan. Most of the program took place either in Tokyo, Shirakawa-go, Toyota City or Kyoto. In Tokyo, company visits were combined with sightseeing opportunities, and special attention was paid to efforts that are feasible within the infrastructure of a large city.In Shirakawa-go, located in a hilly forested area, the central theme was living in balance with nature. Traditional houses use only the resources available to them nearby in their construction, and food is produced locally. In Toyota City, Baca visited a wide array of Toyota facilities, including a manufacturing plant and a recycling facility. In Kyoto, the learning activities focused mostly on sightseeing.Baca added: Much of the ideas and knowledge gained from this experience are scalable and translatable to other situations, which make them viable solutions for the right time and place. Also, the way of approaching problems in Japan, particularly with the constraints of limited space and natural resources, is a powerful example of what could be accomplished in a relatively short time with the support of government, private institutions and public opinion. Each year, the Masdar Institute-Toyota scholarship is awarded to a first year student in one of the Master’s programs at Masdar Institute.
architectural designs. What we aim to show at FM Expo 2014 is that our rope access method of building exterior maintenance is one of the most effective, as it offers unsurpassed flexibility and the ability to reach difficult areas, said Harake. The Dubai Mall to Dubai Metro walkway is a case in point. We secured the contract because we were able to show that we had the best solution to maintain all aspects of its exterior, including its underside, which other access methods, such as cradle, are unable to do as effectively. Buildings in Dubai are becoming more challenging to clean, as architects and real estate companies want to impose their unique vision on to the city’s skyline, so our rope access method is in more demand than ever,he added.Spider Access provides high-level access solutions across industries, including commercial, hospitality, retail and residential sectors, with services offered including building cleaning, through to the more complex and difficult-access maintenance services, such as glass replacement, aviation light replacement and building fabric maintenance. The company is a member of the Industrial Rope Access Trade A s s o c i a t i o n ( I R AT A ) , t h e organisation that is internationally recognised as the world’s leading authority for the specialised industry.FM Expo is the only dedicated facility management exhibition in the region. This year’s edition is its eighth and it is being held in conjunction with Middle East Waste & Recycling & Commercial Cleaning & Hygiene Middle East. The annual FM Expo is regarded as a must-attend event for facility managers, building operators, property owners and free zones operatives in the UAE.

ore than 17% of the Internet's secure web servers are believed to be vulnerable to the Heartbleed security bug attack*, allowing the theft of servers' private keys and users' session cookies and passwords. To address the countermeasures against this potentially devastating bug, leading experts will provide ‘Healing’ insights at the second Gulf Information Security Expo & Conference (GISEC) 2014 from 9 to 11 June at D u b a i Wo r l d T r a d e C e n t r e (DWTC).The Heartbleed bug is a serious vulnerability in the popular OpenSSL cryptographic software library that allows stealing information protected under normal conditions, by the SSL/TLS encryption used to secure the Internet. SSL/TLS provides communication security and privacy over the Internet for applications such as web, email, instant messaging (IM) and some virtual private networks (VPNs).Leading information security experts including Robert Bigman, former Chief Information Security Officer at the CIA; Mikko Hypponen, Chief Research Officer at F-Secure; Nader Henein, Advance Security Solutions, Advisory Division, Blackberry and Nicolai Solling,
Director of Technology Services at Help AG, which is currently into assessing the market requirements for Managed Security Services, will tackle various subjects about Heartbleed that was publicly disclosed as recently as 7 April 2014.Heartbleed is exactly what happens when you stop paying attention to the details. This race to the bottom that seems to have taken over the industry with the push to consumerisation is not about sacrificing security for usability, it’s about finding a solution that does not require you to compromise on either, there is no such thing as Good Enough” when it comes to security.said Nader Henein, Advance Security Solutions, A d v i s o r y D i v i s i o n , Blackberry.Nicolai Solling, Director of Technology Services at Help AG said: “What I can say is that organisations have been very busy making sure they are not vulnerable to cyberattacks. Immediately after news of the vulnerability broke, we sent out communications from our support help-desk and were continuously in touch with our customers in addressing the impact. In the first three days alone since it was exposed, there were over 60 cases that were registered and numerous devices were patched, and certificates re-issued.The response has been excellent and all the customers, whom we provided the service as per the contract agreements, are now secured against Heartbleed. I must emphasise that it is important not only to patch the affected servers but also to reissue the certificates since the private keys were exposed by the vulnerability,he added.Konstantinos Karagiannis, Director of Ethical Hacking Centre of Excellence at BT, commented: “The panic surrounding Heartbleed reminded the industry what could happen when many applications and servers around the world are vulnerable to a security flaw. Imagine what would happen if every secure communication stream in the world became vulnerable. Quantum computing has the potential to enable the first organisations that build such machines to eavesdrop on virtually any encrypted data streams at will. BT is working with partners to develop the next generation of encryption schemes that may be a requirement for true data safety in the near future. The Heartbleed bug allows anyone on the Internet to read the memory of the systems protected by the vulnerable versions of the OpenSSL software. This compromises the secret keys used to identify the service providers and to encrypt the traffic, the names and passwords of the users and the actual
content. This allows attackers to eavesdrop on communications, steal
S data directly from the services and users and to impersonate services and users.GISEC has identified that the Heartbleed bug could have disastrous consequences if the threat is not managed properly and quickly. With several eminent authorities in the field of information security convening at GISEC, those who would like to learn more about Heartbleed can find their answers at the event and they will gain global insight as well as grasp the regional impact and the industry’s latest response to this threat, said Trixie LohMirmand, Senior Vice President, Dubai World Trade Centre, organisers of the exhibition and conference. In this context, topics such as ‘Learn how we can prevent another Heartbleed’,‘Maximising incident
response speed’,‘How to avoid ‘Heartbleed’ threat’,‘7 Ways to Stop the Heartbleed’ amongst others will be discussed by speakers and vendors alike.Robert Bigman’s keynote address of Day 1 of the GISEC Conference will shed light on the vulnerability of Heartbleed, especially clear prevention methods the audience can use to protect their internal corporate networks under the theme ‘Change the way you connect to the internet’. Mikko Hypponen - the man who tracked down the authors of the first PC virus ever recorded - will deliver his keynote address on Day 2 of the GISEC Conference and will discuss critical information security issues to empower one with superior protection. Wim Remes, Chairman of the Board of Directors at (ISC)2 will focus on strategies to map out existing infrastructures to adequately protect them against realistic threats among several others. The conference segment of GISEC, from 10 to 11 June, will host delegates from over 18 countries and explores issues on global cybersecurity vulnerabilities and threats against systems, applications, and personal networks. The free-toattend security sessions on vendor-run educational presentations, workshops, demonstrations, informative speeches and case-studies will give I.T. professionals useful insights to help defend their businesses from cyberattacks. As the region’s only large-scale information security platform, GISEC will gather industry, government and thought leaders as well as international and regional cybersecurity experts in various business verticals such as I.T., oil & gas, banking & finance, government, legal, healthcare and telecoms to meet the growing requirements for information security and countermeasures in the region. The must-attend event is set to draw 3,000 trade visitors from 51 countries and more than 100 exhibitors from the world’s leading information security companies and brands. 91% of last year’s attendees were purchasing decision makers from a wide range of industries. Powered by GITEX TECHNOLOGY W E E K , t h e r e g i o n ’s l e a d i n g Information and Communications Technology (ICT) event, GISEC is strictly a trade-only event and is open to business and trade visitors from within the industry only. GISEC is open 10am-6pm from 9-11 June. Visitor attendance is free of charge. For more information, please visit www.gisec.ae.

T he International Air Transport Association (IATA) announced that nearly 1,000 people are expected to attend its 70th Annual General Meeting (AGM) and World Air Transport Summit in Doha, Qatar from 1-3 June 2014. Hosted by Qatar Airways, the event will take place under the patronage of the Emir of Qatar, His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani.Doha will be the center of the air transport industry next week as its leaders discuss the most important commercial aviationrelated issues of our times: safety, security, environment, distribution and financial sustainability among others,” said Tony Tyler, IATA’s Director General and CEO.IATA is the global association of the world’s
airlines. The IATA AGM draws together the CEOs and senior management of its 240 member airlines that carry 84% of global traffic. They will be joined by leaders from across the spectrum of industry stakeholders including governments, partners in the value chain and other international organizations. You will notice a very unique atmosphere at the AGM. IATA’s members come from all parts of the world and operate on a variety of business models. We have very large global network airlines. And we have much smaller regional airlines. They compete vigorously in what is a very tough business. But when they are at the AGM, they are focused on the industry and making the best decisions possible to secure its future success,” said Tyler. This will be the fourth time that the AGM is hosted in the Middle East. Aviation in the region supports some 2 million jobs and $116 billion in economic activity. The AGM will be a major event for aviation in the Middle East, and particularly for the airlines based in the Gulf region. These carriers, including Qatar Airways, have been at the core of a major shift in global aviation. In just over a decade, the share of global traffic accounted for by Middle East airlines increased from 4% to 9%. Much of this growth has been realized here in the Gulf, said Tyler.IATA’s 70th AGM coincides with the global celebration of the first 100 years of scheduled commercial aviation. Ooredoo’s success in the mobile money sphere with both Ooredoo Tunisia and Indosat receiving awards for their specific services is another significant milestone for the company, which currently has more than one million mobile money customers around the w o r l d . O o r e d o o Tu n i s i a ’s MobiFlouss service works with a wide range of banks to enable customers to transfer money, check bills, and pay for bills and goods. in the cloud, gaining market share and growing six times faster than its largest competitor. The company’s annual cloud run rateis now approaching €1.1 billion.SAP’s cloud applications total subscribers now exceed 36 million, which is the most of any vendor in the industry today. This encompasses the leading social business platform with over 12 million users, the world’s largest business network with more than 1.4 million connected companies transacting over $500 billion in commerce on an annual basis, and the largest business cloud implementations in the world, with more than 2 million users.Cloud computing is here to stay, and it is having a huge impact on the way businesses in the UAE and beyond run and plan for the future,” said Sam Alkharrat, Managing Director, SAP MENA.Businesses in the region are turning to us for cloud solutions more than ever before, and the reason is simple. The cloud is not just about Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) anymore. And it’s not just about IT. We’ve now entered an era where major technology decisions are made outside of the IT department and the office of the CIO. Today’s cloud is about driving business innovation and agility, enabling new processes and insights that were previously impossible.Alkharrat’s comments come hot on the heels of IT research and advisory firm Gartner ’s prediction that the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region’s public cloud services market is on track to grow 21.3 per cent in 2014 to total $620 million. By 2017, it will hit $1.1 billion. Gartner estimates that from 2013 to the end of 2017, $3.8bn will have been spent on cloud services in MENA region. Meanwhile, according to the Cisco Global Cloud Index, the Middle East and Africa region is set to post the world’sstrongest cloud traffic growth rate from 17 exabytes in 2012 to 157 exabytes in 2017.Organizations in the region now more than ever understand how cloud can be better leveraged for cost savings while gaining benefits around flexibility, scalability and, most importantly, faster deployment of solutions or IT resources. As vendors and the channel launch more cloud services, while addressing customer concerns around
the number one cloud-based network for business-to-business commerce and collaboration, in 2012.SAP’s cloud portfolio encompasses the market’s leading public cloud application portfolio (number one in Human Capital Management, procurement, business networks, and social business collaboration), as well as the most-trusted private cloud environment. SAP alsostands out for the most complete cloud-based Customer Relationship Management (CRM) solution. SAP Cloud for Customer incorporates all key CRM pillars and gains additional power from tapping into social media analytics and customer intelligence. In addition, the SAP Business Suite powered bySAP HANA (BSoH), a disruptive technology world first that combines transactional applications with analytics in-memory, is available via the SAP HANA Enterprise Cloud service, providing organisations with a new deployment option to gain immediate value from the technology. SAP runs an ecosystem strategy with its managed service providers to offer the capabilities of SAP HANA Enterprise Cloud from their data centers, as well as from multiple SAP data centers worldwide.Earlier this month, SAP further bolstered its cloud reach by announcing that a number of its core business applications will soon be certified on Microsoft Azure (core SAP business applications have been certified on Amazon's cloud since 2011).By the end of June, Microsoft and SAP will support SAP Business Suite software, SAP Business All-inOne solutions, SAP Mobile Platform, SAP Adaptive Server Enterprise (SAP ASE) and the developer edition of the SAP HANA platform on Azure. The SAP Cloud portfolio provides the innovation and agility businesses need to rapidly adapt their processes to capitalize on everchanging market dynamics, added Alkharrat. When taken together with the connectivity and insight of SAP’s social and business networks, the power and speed of SAP’s HANA inmemory database and analytics, and the accessibility of SAP mobile,SAP Cloud empowers a new level of business performance.

he trade relationship with the African continent and the UAE is continuing to boom, with lucrative opportunities in the automotive industry a key component of that bond, according to Asad Badami, the managing director of a leading UAE-based automotive aftermarket global distributor.Following a meeting between a delegation from Uganda, headed by the Prime Minister of Buganda - a subnational kingdom in Uganda’s Central Region - and Badami, the Dubai based global distributor affirmed the opportunities coming out of the relations that companies like AMAP can leverage, particularly in the automotive industry. While North and South African automotive
markets are thriving, the lack of a mature automotive manufacturing industry within East and West Africa means that companies like A-MAP play a pivotal role in keeping the continent moving. With the surge in automotive demand across Africa, the spare part sector of the automotive industry is equally important,Badami said.Uganda remains as one of the most attractive destinations in Africa, due to its fast economic growth over the last few years, despite the global financial crisis, as well as its liberal external trade policy. fter their massively acclaimed sold out production of Dancing at Lughnasa by Brian Friel, which one Dubai critic referred to as one of the “finest pieces of theatre ever to grace a Dubai stage,Da n ú Theatre, by special permissio n of the Keane Family, is delighted to present the award winning BIG MAGGIE by John B. Keane (writer of Sive, Moll and The Field which was made into a Hollywood movie starring Richard Harris) from 4-7 June at the Kilachand Studio, DUCTAC, Mall of the Emirates (7:30 PM nightly with additional matinee performances June 6 & 7 at 2:30PM).BIG MAGGIE is an explosive play, which challenges traditional parochial norms in Ireland
as well as turning the idea of the warm and loving Irish matriarch on its head. Machiavellian Maggie, the epitome of the “ice queen”, proves herself to be a sociopath as she views her husband's death as a liberation meaning all pieties, social conventions and sentimentality are severed. As Maggie seizes her opportunity to take absolute control of the family farm and business, she denies her four children their share, and drives each one, in turn away with devastating consequences. All the while, she seems to take pleasure in manipulating each and every one of them or does she do it for their own good? Is she in fact saving them from a life devoid of happiness similar to the life she has led? One thing is for certain; nothing ever stands in her way. Keane’s play was always about exploding comfortable notions of the nurturing matriarch. The Irish mother has long been associated with either a warm tolerance for all her children’s failings or with politicized martyrdom, neither of which Keane gave room to gestate in his creation of Maggie Polpin. She’s a dab hand at breaking spirits” and that sadly enough, is very much true of Mother Ireland herself in the past and with the economic downturn of the past few years. BIG MAGGIE is one of the best characters written for women and in many ways is Ireland’s modern answer to the great Henrik Ibsen’s HEDDA GABLER. It is easily one of the best and most overlooked plays of the last fifty years and arguably John B. Keane’s masterpiece. Set in 1960's rural Ireland, Big Maggie is a compelling portrait of a woman who is determined to take control of her own life at al costs. The dialogue crackles with hilarious, caustic putdowns as the indomitable Maggie deals with her feckless family and unwanted suitors. Everyone wants a part of Big Maggie and her property but she has other ideas.Danú is producing BIG MAGGIE in association with Padraig Downey, the Dubai Irish Society and La Clinique, JLT with special permission from the
Keane family. The group is keen to continue bringing entertaining and thought-provoking productions to discerning Dubai audiences.Danú’s founder, producer and director
Padraig Downey says the play has a universal theme that connects with people:BIG MAGGIE is a beautifully written play whose themes are universal and will resonate among Dubai’s many cultural traditions - the importance of family ties, adherence to cultural norms in changing times, arranged marriage, free will, respect to religion, women’s rights and the strife which can occur within a nuclear family unit when the head of the household dies.Downey worked in theatre for many years in N e w Yo r k , California, Paris, Rome, London and Dublin. Before becoming Drama Director and instructor in Dubai he worked in media on Fifth Avenue, New York as well as acting with the prestigious Blueroom Theatre Company in the US. He also worked as linguistic and cultural coordinator in The Irish Cultural Centre Paris meeting many of the Irish writers whose work he now produces. H
oliday shoppers at The Dubai Mall have delivered a n e w G u i n n e s s Wo r l d Records title for a UAE health drive launched to tackle heart-related illnesses, an initiative set up by Benchmark Middle East and Merck Serono Middle East and Near East.A total of 8,675 Mallgoers took blood sugar level checks during an eight-hour diabetes screening yesterday at 40 nursing stations set up by the One Heart Health Community at
the start of a campaign to tackle cardiovascular disease. The previous world record for blood sugar level checks was held by the Turkish Diabetes Foundation who screened 7,024 people over eight hours in Istanbul in 2012.His Excellency Engineer Essa Al Maidoor, Director General of the DHA, dedicated the latest landmark achievement to President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai; Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of Dubai Executive Council and Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, UAE Minister of Finance and Chairman of DHA.He also expressed his profound thanks to other stakeholders, including the Dubai Diabested Center, Emirates Diabetes Society and the Emirates Cardiac Society and Benchmark.Al Maidoor said: “At the DHA, it is our aim to carry out health education campaigns to empower the community to make the right choices with regard to their health. We are pleased that this campaign has won the world record, and it is our aim to continue such campaigns on a regular basis as part of our commitment to improving community health. We firmly believe that prevention and early detection are key to ensure a healthier population.Dr Manal Taryam, CEO of Primary Healthcare at the DHA said:Prevention is key to tackling lifestyle diseases and through such campaigns, we hope to educate people about the need to lead a healthy lifestyle and conduct regular health screenings so that they are aware of their health status and can make timely decisions to prevent or manage lifestyle diseases.Dr Mohammed Hamed Farooqi, Director of the Dubai Diabetes Centre, said: “Given the prevalence of diabetes in this region and abroad, it is imperative to carry out such awareness campaigns to educate the community.Diabetes is a disease that affects all parts of the body and one of the most important risk factors for cardiovascular disease is diabetes. It is important, therefore, to educate people on ways to prevent developing the disease as well as to educate diabetics on how to keep
their sugar levels under control. We’re very happy to be supporting this initiative because we believe it can achieve so much, said Dream Samir, Managing Director at
Merck Serono Middle and Near East. “Increasing the awareness of diseases like hypertension and diabetes is the first step towards empowering patients to proactively contribute to their treatment journey.Endorsed by Dubai Health Authority, Dubai Diabetes Center, Emirates Diabetes Society and the Emirates Cardiac Society, yesterday’s screening marked the first phase of an ongoing awareness drive which will now aim to claim two more Guinness World Records titles later this year for most blood pressure readings and most cholesterol readings. This was the perfect start for what is a very serious initiative to underline to people from all walks of life in the UAE the risk factors of heart-related illnesses and the importance of a healthy lifestyle,” said Mohamed Hammad, Founder and Managing Director at Benchmark Middle East, FZ-LLC, the initiator of the One Heart Health Community. We’re delighted to have claimed a new Guinness World Records title and we will go all out to take two more over the next few months. But we won’t lose sight of the fact that our main objective of all of this is to persuade as many people as possible that heart disease can be prevented if positive changes are made in their daily lives.A team of 80 nurses were kept busy yesterday as a steady flow of shoppers stepped up for blood sugar level checks in The Dubai Mall’s Star Atrium, during the public holiday to c e l e b r a t e I s r a Wa l Mairaj.Benchmark Middle East, a Dubai-based independent healthcare communication agency, set up the One Heart Health Community to create a different approach to the task of raising awareness about heart-related illnesses, and ultimately save lives. The campaign is initially focused on cardiovascular disease, the world’s biggest single killer, which accounted for a quarter of all deaths in the UAE in 2012.The campaign will now be expanded to engage UAE residents online through Facebook, blogs, twitter and a new mobile phone application, ‘Break-Up’.This new app helps individuals track changes in their lifestyle such as exercising at home and limiting junk food consumption. It is designed to motivate users, keep track of progress by family and friends’, and encourage them not to give up. The One Heart Health Community has partnered with Merck Serono Middle and Near East, a recognised biotechnology and pharmaceutical chemistry leader a n d t h e w o r l d ’s o l d e s t pharmaceutical company, with more than 300 years’ experience. he Audi Group is systematically continuing along its path of global growth. In the year to date, the company has already delivered more than 560,000 automobiles to its customers. In order to satisfy demand for the cars with the Four Rings, Audi is operating with special shifts. This year alone, the premium brand intends to launch 17 new models and derivatives on the market. At the same time, the Ingolstadt-based company is pressing ahead with the biggest investment program in its history: By 2018, approximately €22 billion is to flow into the development of new models and technologies and the expansion of international manufacturing structures. Despite the high levels of advance expenditure, the Audi Group aims to achieve an operating return on sales within its strategic target corridor of eight to ten percent. This
year alone, the company intends to recruit 2,000 new experts and 750 apprentices in Germany. At the 125th Annual General Meeting of AUDI AG, the company today informed its shareholders about all the key metrics of the past financial year and the strong performance of the brand with the Four Rings. In his speech at the headquarters in Ingolstadt, Rupert Stadler, Chairman of the Board of Management of AUDI AG, emphasized the strategic goal of the automobile manufacturer until 2020: “We are tackling our tasks with a highly motivated team, with the clear ambition to be the number one.The current delivery numbers are evidence of the company’s success. In the first f o u r m o n t h s o f t h i s y e a r, approximately 561,900 customers decided to buy an Audi (2013: 502,989). This represents an increase of 11.7 percent. Since January, Audi has made progress over the prior-year period not only with the Q3 compact SUV and the new A3 family, but also with full-sized automobiles such as the A6, A7, Q7 and A8. The brand with the Four Rings intends to launch a total of 17 new models and derivatives on the market in 2014, and thus to continue its growth in all regions of the world. Audi CEO Stadler explained to more than 600 shareholders and guests at the Annual General Meeting: “We are starting the second stage of our model offensive t h i s y e a r. ” T h e a u t o m o b i l e manufacturer is therefore stepping up the pace of investment. In order to continue its “Vorsprung durch Te c h n i k , ” A u d i w i l l i n v e s t approximately €22 billion in new models and technologies and in the expansion of its international manufacturing structures by 2018. The company has set aside 70 percent of the biggest investment program in its history for the expansion and modernization of its model range and its technology and innovation portfolio. “Despite intensive advance expenditure for the future of our company, we intend to achieve an operating return on sales within our strategic target corridor of eight to ten percent,” stated Axel Strotbek, Member of the Board of Management for Finance and Organization, at the Annual General Meeting. With this robust level of profitability, Audi is also creating the basis for further growth in the coming years.Audi already performed well with sound key figures in the past financial year, despite the challenging market environment in Europe. Worldwide,
the brand with the Four Rings delivered 1,575,480 automobiles of the Audi brand – an increase of 8.3 percent (2012: 1,455,123). The Audi Group increased its revenue to €49,880 million (2012: €48,771 million). Despite negative exchangerate effects, this represents growth of 2.3 percent. Operating profit of €5,030 million was slightly lower than in the previous year (2012: €5,365 million). Despite rising development expenditure for new products and technologies as well as intensive a d v an ce ex p en d itu r e f o r th e expansion of the international production network, the company achieved an operating return on sales of 10.1 percent (2012: 11.0 percent).Trevor Hill of Audi Middle East also commented on the performance in the region saying: “We’ve seen a strong growth in the automotive sector here in the Middle East and in 2013, Audi Middle East
had a record year with sales of over 10,600 and a 16.3% growth, which was a phenomenal achievement, especially in the premium sector. We anticipate further growth in 2014 to over 12,000 cars.At the Annual General Meeting, the Audi Board of Management thanked all the employees for their great commitment and innovative skills. For the past financial year, AUDI AG will arrange for the employees to participate in the company’s success. The employees at the sites in Germany will therefore receive an average profit-sharing bonus of €6,900. In addition, the company will continue to recruit in 2014. “Audi’s international growth path will create new jobs also in Germany,” pointed out Thomas Sigi, Member of the Board of Management for Human Resources. More than 2,000 additional experts are to work above all in the competence areas of lightweight construction, connectivity and electric mobility, and will help with the development of new plants. Furthermore, 750 young people will commence their occupational training at the sites in Ingolstadt and Neckarsulm. Production is also running at full speed: At the two sites in Germany, the employees will work 74 special shifts from January until June, in order to satisfy demand for models of the Audi brand. In the Middle East, Audi are also committed to investing in people. Since launching in 2005 with only 17 people in the UAE, the team has now grown to over 100 staff with a network of dealers that covers the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman, Lebanon, Bahrain, Jordan and Kuwait. The Audi Group intends to grow in all regions of the world in 2014. The brand with the Four Rings anticipates a slight increase in revenue to more than €50 billion. The systematic expansion of international manufacturing structures, increasing advance expenditure for new models and technologies especially to comply with increasingly strict CO2 regulations worldwide will at first have a negative impact on earnings this year. At the same time, the growth in unit sales and the continuous improvements in productivity and processes that have already been initiated will provide positive impetus for the development of operating profit. In total, the Ingolstadt company expects to achieve an operating return on sales within its strategic target corridor of eight to ten percent.

Q1 2014 GOLD DEMAND SHOWS CORE FUNDAMENTALS REMAIN ROBUST By Qadeer Ahmad Siddiqui Dubai UAE:
T
he latest World Gold Council Gold Demand Trends report, which covers the period January-March 2014, shows a return to the long-term quarterly average demand trends established over the past 5 years. Following an exceptional year in 2013 Gold demand in Q1 2014 was 1,074 tonnes (t), almost unchanged compared to the same period in 2013 - a clear demonstration that the fundamentals of the gold market remain robust.Global demand for jewellery, the most significant component of overall demand, totalled 571t in Q1 2014, a 3% rise on the same period last year, representing the strongest start to the year for jewellery since 2005. Most notably, there was a 10% rise in demand for jewellery in China, which became the largest global market for gold demand in 2013.Central banks continued to be strong buyers, purchasing 122t in the quarter. While this represents a fall of 6% compared to Q1 2013, it is the 13th consecutive quarter in which central banks have been net purchasers of gold and indicates their continued commitment to diversifying their assets.Overall investment demand dipped slightly, to 282t in Q1 2014, compared with 288t in the same quarter last year. Demand for bars and coins was 283t in the quarter, a fall of 39% on the same time last year. This coincided with the first rise in the quarterly average gold price seen since Q4 2012. The fall was particularly noticeable in India, where investment in bars and coins dropped 54% to 45t. Factors including duty and restrictions on gold imports coupled with restrictions on the free movement of cash and other assets, such as gold in the run up to the election, had the effect of dampening down genuine purchases of gold using cash. However in contrast, outflows from gold-backed Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) slowed to just 0.2t, compared to the more substantial fall of 177t seen in Q1 2013.Consumer demand of 853t was unsurprisingly lower than the figures seen throughout much of 2013, when buyers took advantage of the lower gold price and drove consumer demand to record levels. Q1 2014 data indicates a return to long term average demand trends and is in line with the 5-year quarterly average of 850t.Marcus Grubb, Managing Director, Investment Strategy, at the Wo r l d G o l d C o u n c i l , s a i d : “Following an exceptional year in 2013, Quarter 1 2014 signals a return to the long term average patterns of demand, holding steady at 1,074 tonnes. It is clear that the longer term underpinnings of the gold market – such as jewellery demand in Asia – remain firmly in place demonstrating the continuing resilience of the gold
market and the unique nature of gold as an asset class, rebalancing to reflect demand. In value terms, gold demand in Q1 2014 was US$45bn, down 21% compared to Q1 2013. The average gold price of US$1,293/oz was down 21% on the average Q1 2013 price. The key findings from the report are as follows: • Total global jewellery demand was 571t in the first quarter, a rise of 3% on the same quarter last year, as consumers continued to be the dominant drivers of the demand for gold. • Total investment demand was 282t, compared to 288t in the same quarter the previous year. Demand for bars and coins fell 39% from the previous year to 283t. However this coincided with the first rise in the quarterly average gold price seen since Q4 2012, which encouraged private investors to wait for clearer signs about the longer term path of the price of gold before deciding on their investment strategy. • ETF outflows were just 0.2t, a fraction of the outflows seen in Q1 2013. • Q1 2014 saw central bank net purchases again top 100t. This is the 13th consecutive quarter in which central banks have been net purchasers as they diversify their assets. Central bank net purchases were 122t in Q1 2014, 6% lower than a year ago. • Taken together, the figures demonstrate that the core fundamentals of the market remain in place following an exceptional 2013. Gold demand and supply statistics for Q1 2014 • Q1 gold demand of 1,074t was fractionally lower than the 1,077t seen in Q1 2013 • ETF outflows slowed to just 0.2t. With demand for bars and coins totalling 283t, this means overall investment demand was 282t, a 2% fall on Q1 2013 • Demand in the jewellery sector was up 3% to 571t. Jewellery demand in China was up 10% to 203t, while demand in India fell 9% to 146t • Demand in the technology sector was 99t for the quarter, down 4% compared to the previous year • Q1 2014 mine production was up 6% on last year at 721t. Recycling fell 13% resulting in total gold supply that was 1% higher than a year ago at 1,048t • Net central bank purchases totalled 122t, 6% lower than a year ago, making this the 13th consecutive quarter in which central banks have been net purchasers of gold • Gold demand in value terms in Q1 2014 was US$45bn, down 21% on last year • The Q1 2014 average gold price was US$1,293/oz, down 21% on the year before

“SHARJAH RESIDENTIAL AND OFFICE MARKETS BENEFITTING TREMENDOUSLY FROM EMIRATE’S EXPANDING ECONOMY”, SAYS CLUTTONS By Qadeer Ahmad Siddiqui Dubai UAE:

he strong growth of the UAE economy has also been mirrored at an emirate level in Sharjah and this has boosted demand in both the residential and commercial property markets in the emirate, according to international real estate consultancy Cluttons. The latest Spring 2014 Residential Market Outlook reports released by Cluttons point to rising rents in neighbouring Dubai, an influx of residents from
sales market. This has in turn encouraged some developers to return to the sales market. Although limited to a small number of instances, residential towers in locations perceived to be prime, have been sold entirely off-plan, with capital values hovering around the AED 400 psf mark.Elsewhere in the emirate’s real estate landscape, the overarching improvement in the UAE’s economic performance is also manifesting itself in the commercial market in the form

suppliers with local partners. Indeed, the show gathered many companies such as developers,
troubled parts of the region as well as renewed economic activity and job creation in Sharjah, which are making the emirate an attractive option for tenants.Average residential rents climbed by 4.5% during the first quarter of 2014, leaving them 19%
higher than this time last year, further building on a 3.4% increase in Q4 2013. Average rents in Al Qassimiya have seen the strongest gains over the past 12 months, with rents now standing 36% up on Q1 2013. Villas on the other hand have registered a 13% rise in rents in the first quarter, which compares to a 25% increase throughout 2013.According to Steve Morgan, Cluttons Middle East Chief Executive:The strong growth in villa rates has been catalysed by rising demand for villa communities, particularly along the Sharjah Airport/Maliha Road corridor. This is being fuelled by a rising population, which in turn is being driven by the emirate’s expanding aviation sector, a growing number of international schools and the proximity to Sharjah International Airport. Sharjah International Airport, through the brisk expansion of Air Arabia is starting to extend its sphere of influence on surrounding areas and is emerging as another budding UAE aerotropolis, in much the same way that Al Maktoum International is spurring development in areas south of Jebel Ali.Developers are also keen to capitalise on this strong demand and we are recording a substantial rise in the number of feasibility studies requested for master planned residential communities in this area. Not only does the Maliha Road corridor provide easy access into Dubai, but the mushrooming of these new lifestyle destinations will start to put Sharjah’s residential offerings on par with Dubai and Abu Dhabi, albeit on a smaller scale. The report also reveals that the current political instability across parts of the Middle East has caused an influx of people setting up home in Sharjah, due to largely affordable rents and its rich Islamic heritage. The report points to these expatriates being flush with ‘refugee capital’, which is finding its way into Sharjah’s off-plan residential
of rising levels of occupier activity, with Sharjah also clearly benefiting from the economic buoyancy, according to Cluttons Spring 2014 Sharjah Commercial Market Outlook report.Demand for office space however remains centred on smaller units in the region of 1,000 to 1,500 sqft. Despite the slight upturn in requirements, office rents have remained relatively flat. That said, prime areas of Al Majaz have seen a slip in rates and this has been predominately a result of greater supply and reduced demand from larger, international occupiers.Morgan added: “Some landlords with large shell and core space are moving quickly to capitalise on demand by carrying out partial fit outs in a bid to take advantage of market conditions and lease space as smaller units. Furthermore, where space is urgently required, we have seen a few instances of residentialoffice conversions take place, with previously abandoned residential schemes being transformed into office space. The supply pipeline is expected to deliver mostly Grade B space to market and this is driving some occupiers to consider build-tosuit options, which will, to an extent, allow them to mitigate issues such as sufficient parking, which remains a major challenge in the centre of the city. It is however very encouraging to see the government making head way in this area. The government is ploughing investment into the upgrading of transportation infrastructure across the city. In addition, the announcement that the newly formed Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority is undertaking feasibility studies for new road networks, a tramway system and a metro system which could be linked with Etihad Rail, further boosting the appeal of Sharjah as a more affordable alternative to Dubai and Abu Dhabi.According to data released by Meed Projects, Sharjah is planning a $2.3 billion investment in transport infrastructure projects over the next five years. The report also states that there has been a 300% increase in the number of new projects awarded in Sharjah in 2012 and 2013, with more than 90% of the contracts for the construction and real estate sectors.Morgan concluded:While a Metro network in Sharjah would bring about a radical transformation in accessibility across the city, the 7% rise announced in Sharjah’s budget for 2014/15 is set to see almost 50% of the AED 15.4 billion budget allocated to further development of the economy. This will add further impetus to the rising levels of real estate activity in both the residential and commercial markets across Sharjah.

155 MILLION YEAR-OLD DINOSAUR EXHIBIT IN THE DUBAI MALL IS NAMED ‘DUBAIiDINO’ •Name chosen following a social media competition that recorded thousands of entries Dubai. Dubai Winner shows abstract Irish landscape paintings and Dubai Winners of the Dubai World Cup by acclaimed Irish artist, Paddy Lennon. The art exhibition runs until Sunday, 10 August 2014. This exhibition shows tribute to the year of the horse starting January 31, 2014 which is the Lunar New Year according to Chinese zodiac. Paddy Lennon was born in Inchicore, Ireland, in 1955. Paddy’s main artistic technique is drawing. He explains, “I feel that drawing has everything that is most important in art. It is much harder work than painting but is deeper and richer. There is nowhere to hide in a drawing; it’s all lain open to the world. Due to the fact that I can’t source-card large enough to draw full life-sized horses, I concentrate on the upper part of their bodies, mainly the head and neck.Regarding how Paddy started painting and painting horses in particular, he continues, I have always tried to convey a certain feeling through my work, be it painting or drawing. When I lived in the West of Ireland, the landscape was overwhelming which had a strong effect on my work. My studio is in the equestrian yard so I don’t have far to go for the source of my work. It’s
“I’m fairly wide ranging. For my drawings use Siberian compressed charcoal for the larger work, and water colour pencils or polychromous or simply pencil for my smaller sketches. Also, oil on canvas for some of my paintings or something developed myself which is a mixed media involving charcoal, board, turpentines and oil paint. This method I developed through trial and error and it can be difficult to pull off, as such, I don’t use it too often.Working in isolation in his studio his preferred medium is now oil on fabriano or linen. Oil is malleable and versatile and he says that oil “has a direct link to all the great art of the past, the possibilities with oil paint are limitless and when working there always seems to be new discoveries to be made, new roads to travel, new avenues to explore, it’s this openness in which I think oil paint has an advantage over other media. He no longer does any preparatory sketches as he feels that it robbed the painting of some of its life and that the very act of painting, the creation of a story peculiar to that particular painting is a thing of that moment only it carries its own dynamic and I don’t want to dilute this by imposing previous design or ideas.
