“THE SUSTAINABILITY OF SME'S IN VIEW OF THE CURRENT ECONOMIC CLIMATE” TAKES CENTRE STAGE AT HIGH-LEVEL PANEL DISCUSSION Dubai Knowledge Village Hosts Fastest Growing Network of Decision Makers at the ‘Breakfast Club’ By Qadeer Ahmad Siddiqui Dubai UAE:
E
xperts and industry leaders discussed and analysed key factors that impact the SME industry given the current climate in the region, at Dubai Knowledge Village’s (DKV) exclusive Breakfast Club. The event is part of a series of networking initiatives organised by DKV to bring together industry professionals and decision makers to highlight current, critical and challenging issues, as an effort to support the overall economic development of Dubai and the wider region. The session, titled The Sustainability of SME’s in View of the Current Economic Climate”, tackled key areas that would impact SMEs, including Dubai’s rising cost of living and its impact on smaller businesses, and the effect of this inflation on SME’s profitability. Panellists in the Breakfast Club discussed if SME’s will be forced to lay off employees and curb expansion plans, and if they will afford the average pay adjustment of 5% predicted in 2014. Regulatory adjustments to protect SMEs and their competitive ability were also among the topics debated during the event. The panel included high profile figures related to the SME sector, such as: Alexandar Mathew Williams, Director of Strategy and Policy Division on Board, Dubai SME – Mohammad Bin Rashid Establishment for SME Development; Marwan Mohammed Al Suwaidi, Director of Finance, Khalifa Fund for Enterprise Development; Ali Ahmad Abdulla Alwan, Owner of Fixit Express; and Tahany Taher, Director of Community Business Banking at National Bank of Abu Dhabi. The discussion was moderated by McClelland Jr., President and CEO of Centre House Ltd.Hosting the event, Dr. Ayoub Kazim, Managing Director of TECOM Investments’ Education Cluster commented, “Through our events, such as the Breakfast Club, Training Open Week, and the TECOM SME Builder, we aim to continuously support the development of the economy and contribute to Dubai’s sustainability. In Dubai, SMEs account for over 95% of the private enterprises and contribute to nearly 40% of the emirate’s GDP. SMEs are leading economic growth and job creation in the UAE today, accounting for more than 42% of its workforce. It is therefore a top priority this sector has access to cutting edge knowledge, technology, funding and markets. There is a strong will in the region to create a supportive environment for SMEs, and with many governments and businesses in the region coming forward with incentives and programmes, a promising future lies ahead for home-grown entrepreneurship. Yet, more is needed to provide for the push forward for
SMEs, as they are vital to the region’s growth.Despite their integral role in the development of the economy, many SMEs continue to face difficulties securing financing at sustainable rates.
In fact, the UAE’s total bank lending to SME’s is around 3.85%, when its target is 24.3%. This is due to the fact that banks focus on big loans for big corporations.Yet, the government has had great efforts to support SMEs and overcome the challenges they face. In fact, the government of Dubai has launched a body dedicated to supporting SMEs: Dubai SME, the SME development agency of the Department of Economic Development (DED). Supported by those efforts, there is a growing realisation that SMEs are often more lucrative for financiers than big firms.Sheikh Khalifa, President of the UAEA newly approved law also represents a significant step by the UAE government to support SMEs. His Highness Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, has approved Federal Law No 2 of 2014, which categorised SMEs and established a dedicated council. The legislation granted SMEs exemptions from customs tax for equipment, raw materials and goods for production purposes. It also exempted them the payment of bank guarantees that companies must pay per new worker. The UAE government support is also prevalent through several initiatives it has launched, such as the Dubai SME and the Khalifa Fund.Marwan Al Suwaidi commented: “At Khalifa Fund, we have several pillars such as the Bidaya, Ziyada, and Tasnee’e’ programmes that provide funding to nationally-owned start-ups, SMEs and industrial organisations. Besides funding, we have been supporting SMEs in terms of procurement, capacity building and the overall fostering of the entrepreneurial culture.Ali Ahmad Alwan said:The UAE provides various facilities for SMEs, through various means like ease of doing business, transparency, and financial support.McClelland Jr. commented saying: “As an expatriate SME, the challenges are different for us, but the UAE government still provides us with the products and services we need to be successful. What I learned today is that there are more facilities available to me, even within the entities that focus on Emirati national development.

more than half of the market's room stock. But in Dubai, 5-star hotels dominate with a market share exceeding 60% and about a 50% of pipeline supply leaving a huge gap and opportunity for budget hotels that we are keen to penetrate with
Media Group in Dubai. Taking part in a live panel discussion on 'Growing the 3-star Market', Laurent highlighted the drivers of midmarket as well as spoke about the challenges of competing in a costconscious segment. The scale of opportunity in the region for budget hotels is unprecedented. The number of visitors travelling to the region is projected to double reaching 136 million by 2020 compared to 54 million in 2008. Laurent said,The region including Dubai is seeing strong economic and tourism growth owing to increasing stopover traffic, rapidly expanding low-cost carriers, growing inter-regional travel, increased airport capacity, new emerging source markets and a growing middle class that is fueling the demand for budget hotels. In addition, a lot of local and international companies are cutting down on their annual travelling budgets and seeking affordable accommodation".Capitalizing on this soaring demand for quality budget accommodation in the GCC, HMH had recently reiterated its commitment to enter budget segment with ECOS Hotels. Laurent stressed, "Existing hotel stock in the Middle East, including the UAE, is predominantly geared towards luxury and up-market accommodation. In more mature hotel markets, such as the United States and Europe, mid-scale and budget accommodation comprise
ECOS Hotels.Talking about the expansion plans for the 'no frills' B & B brand, Laurent said,ECOS Hotels is a smart choice for investors offering strong investment opportunity because of lower construction and operating costs and quick and high return on investment. To start with we have three different projects under consideration in the UAE and the first of these will be developed in Dubai.Laurent believes it is the best time to do so as Dubai is once again leading the way in the region having given a tax reprieve to investors developing mid-market hotels by exempting eligible hotels from 10 per cent municipality fee levied on the daily room rate for a period of four years if the construction permit is granted between October 1, 2013 and December 31, 2017. Another key trigger has been Dubai Expo 2020. 25 million people are likely to visit the Expo, of which 70% will come from outside the UAE pushing the demand for hotels. According to industry sources a little over 6000 new hotel rooms are expected to come on the Dubai market by 2015, taking the emirate's total hotel room stock to just over 65000. It is looking to have 80,000 hotel rooms by 2020, meaning more than 15000 new hotel rooms may be built before the event. Dubai is going to have 2443 economy hotel rooms by 2017 in addition to those planned and under construction.

Olympic motto starts with “Faster”. Time is one of the essential elements for designating winners and losers and for establishing records. Time, in a sporting context, is measured and quantified, but it also incites enthusiasm and passion. The passage of time is inexorable, but this exhibition aims to show Man’s ingeniousness and the artistic creativity that can lead to the observation and study of time, be it in painting, s culpture, mus ic or cinema.Through inventive scenography by Lorenzo Greppi, the visitor discovers a route organised around nine themed sectors, which clearly illustrate the changes and evolution of the perception of time throughout history. This scenography observes the evolution of the understanding of time, starting at the natural and cyclical notion of the Ancient Games, passing through the first stages of linear time and clock time, and ending at the production of highly specialised systems for measuring and recording time, thanks to the manufacture of high-precision instruments today. Originally used in marine chronometers, it soon became an established feature of wristwatches too.The power reserve indication displays the current state of tension in the mainspring and the residual power in terms of hours. In the Manero PowerReserve, the functionality and design of the power reserve indication are perfectly combined, creating a striking and unique watch face.Functionality at a glance:On a semicircular indication at 3 o’clock, a hand shows the power remaining. total of 20 members of Masdar Institute of Science of Technology’s Young Future Energy Leaders (YFEL) program explored new vistas in the technology and applications of satellite remote sensing and Geographic Information System (GIS) for mapping and monitoring the natural environment during a course in the UAE.The satellite and earth observation course titled ‘Remote Sensing and GIS’ was part of the year-long schedule of special courses offered in technology, policy and leadership for the p e r s o n a l a n d p r o f e s s i o n a l development of YFEL members. Led by two faculty members Dr. Prashanth Marpu, and Dr. Marouane Temimi, Associate P r o f e s s o r s f r o m Wa t e r a n d
Environmental Engineering program, Masdar Institute, the course covered a range of remote sensing and GIS tools and techniques used to address environmental issues at local, regional and global scales. The first module provided participants with an understanding of remote sensing and its applications for mapping and monitoring the natural environment, while the second module offered students an introduction to GIS and its applications in spatial analysis of location-enabled data. The third module included a visit to the Emirates Institution for Advanced Science and Technology (EIAST), a strategic initiative that aims to inspire scientific innovation, technological advancement and sustainable development in the UAE.A report from market intelligence and research firm BCC says the global environmental monitoring business that includes sensors, monitoring equipment, ancillaries, network equipment, and larger remote systems, such as satellite and GIS, is expected to perform strongly in the coming years. The overall sales for environmental sensor and monitoring technology were valued at US$13.2 billion in 2014 and recent industry analysis shows that the market will grow to approximately US$17.6 billion in 2019, representing a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.9% for the five year period.Zainab Al Ali, Program Manager, YFEL, said:Each course organized during the year is designed to equip YFEL members with the expertise required for working independently. The satellite and earth observation course benefited participants in
terms of hands-on experience in satellite data analysis, digital image processing, and generation of maps and manipulation of layers of spatial information. We are grateful to the UAE leadership for their consistent support to this outreach program and hope the YFEL members will use the techniques they have acquired during the course at the workplace as
well as for pursuing higher learning.Participants were provided with hands-on experience in satellite data analysis, digital image processing, and generation of maps
and manipulation of layers of spatial information. Technical areas such as multi-spectral and multi-temporal analysis, supervised and unsupervised classification, change detection and GIS topics were also part of the course.Sultan Al Sallami, YFEL member, said: “I am extremely glad that I attended this workshop as it was so interesting and useful. I had some background information about satellites, sensors and electromagnetic radiation but remote sensing and satellites image processing was a very good addition to my knowledge.Another YFEL member Aneesa Ijaz Rabbanii felt that technology has come a long way and GIS can act as an advance alert system to predict natural disasters based on probabilistic calculations. “GIS can also be useful as a monitoring and tracker system to ensure smooth running and planning. In academics it can help study environments such as deserts or marine areas that can only be observed otherwise by air. We studied the geological evolution of the Oman-UAE mountains, an extremely tiring feat if done on foot, but we accomplished this within a matter of weeks with remote sensing techniques, she said Part of the Masdar Institute’s Outreach Program, YFEL offers young professionals and students from the UAE and abroad an opportunity to become more engaged in finding solutions to the world’s biggest challenges achieving energy efficiency and tackling climate change. It also aims to bring young professionals closer to government representatives, business leaders and other organizations active in the area of alternative energy and sustainability.

M
ohammed Bin Rashid School of Government (MBRSG), a research and teaching institution focusing on public policy in the Arab world, today hosted the first session of the Dubai Smart Cities Forum. The event facilitated discussions on issues related to the Dubai Smart City initiative that was announced in February 2014 by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. The forum that brought together decision makers from the public and private sector addressed systemic approaches that need to be
factored into future urban planning for the development of smart city projects. Logistical challenges towards facilitating collaboration among government authorities, service providers, communications providers and ICT solutions providers were also discussed.Delivering the keynote address, His Excellency Ahmad Bin Byat, CEO, Dubai Holding and Vice Chairman of the Board of Trustees for Mohammed Bin Rashid School of Government, said: “Smart city projects, in general, revolve around people more than anything. We measure the smartness of a city by what it offers to residents and visitors in terms of improving their efficiency and productivity or enriching their quality of life. Our goal is not just to make Dubai a smart city but to make it the smartest city. What we are witnessing in Dubai is a massive transformation more than just technological change. Service providers, government or private, are increasingly under pressure to meet the growing requirements of the public. We face the challenge of creating a connected city in which the public and private sector work together with individuals in an integrated ecosystem. We hope through this forum to benefit from the available resources of knowledge and expertise.Rashik Parmar, President, IBM Academy of Technology and Dr Hichem Maya, Head of Business Transformation Services, SAP, led the session. Highlighting the impact of a smart city on the government, transport,
health service and standard of living, Rashik Parmar said: “The challenge the city faces is creating a journey that binds the whole city together. A smart city is not just about hi-tech, it’s about engaging
people and responding to their needs. The city should be able to talk to its residents through seamlessly interconnecting systems to facilitate their lives in the best manner possible while making optimum use of the resources.Dr Hichem Maya said: “A smart city improves living standards, transforms governments and boosts economic prosperity. If we are to achieve this objective, we need to ensure that the public and private sector is flexible, agile, innovative, and capable of engaging individuals and communities.Dr Ali Sebaa Al Marri, Executive President, MBRSG, said:The Mohammed Bin Rashid School of Government is pleased to support the leadership of the UAE in stimulating a conversation on smart cities. This initiative marks the first in a series of sessions held as part the Dubai Smart Cities Forum. The seminar drew upon the experience and ideas of industry experts on challenges and best industry practices. RAMADAN 2014: HEALTHCARE; EDUCATION; TRAINING Diabetes, Exercise, Diet and Fasting By Qadeer Ahmad Siddiqui Dubai UAE:
I
s it Ok for me to fast during the Holy Month of Ramadan, if I am living with diabetes?During fasting, about eight hours after the last meal our bodies start to make use of energy stores to keep blood glucose (sugar) levels normal. For most people, this is not harmful. However, a problem can occur if you are living with diabetes, such as the risk of high glucose levels following the larger meals that we eat before and after fasting at Suhoor and Iftar.Of course, this year the fasting period is long (15 hours in the UAE) meaning that the risk of Hypoglycaemia (high blood sugar levels) and dehydration (lack of water) are high.It is very important that anyone living with type 1 diabetes understand that they are at a higher risk compared to those with type 2 diabetes when fasting during the Holy Month of Ramadan. It is crucial that if you are a type 1 diabetes patient and intend to fast, that you are closely supervised and ensure that your blood sugar is regularly monitored to mitigate health risks. If you are living with type 2 diabetes, generally it is perfectly safe to fast during Ramadan provided that you talk to your doctor about your plans and prepare yourself well. But, it is not safe for everyone living with type 2. Your ability to fast safely often depends on your prescribed medication, and therefore it is really important for you and your doctor to assess your medication programme before the start of Ramadan and/or your fast. Your doctor will guide you to create a fasting plan which works for you.A lot depends on how well your diabetes is controlled, especially if you’re prone to either frequent high blood sugar levels (Hyperglycemia), or low blood sugar levels (Hypoglycemia). For example, if you are taking certain tablets and/or insulin, fasting carries the risk of Hypoglycaemia, or high blood glucose levels during a fast are a possible risk, and in extreme cases, can lead to Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA), a serious condition requiring hospital treatment. What happens to my body during fasting?During fasting, at about eight hours after the last meal our bodies start to use energy stores to keep our blood glucose (sugar) levels normal. For most people, this is not harmful. However for someone living with diabetes, especially if you take certain tablets or insulin, you are at risk of Hypoglycaemia (low blood glucose levels), Hypoglycaemia, (high glucose levels) and dehydration (lack of water). If I am living with type 1 diabetes, is fasting risky? In general, people living with type 1 diabe¬tes are at very high risk of develop¬ing severe complications, and are strongly advised to not fast during Ramadan. If you are living with type 1 diabetes and really do want to fast, you must consult with your doctor before embarking on the daily fast. What are the risks if I fast and I am living with type 2 diabetes? If you are living with type 2 diabetes and have successfully embraced a healthy lifestyle by maintaining a normal body weight through a practice of a balanced diet and regular physical activity, the risks associated with fasting are quite low. However, following a period of fasting if a very large, excessive meal is consumed there is a potential risk of post-meal Hyperglycaemia after the pre-dawn and sunset meals. One simple solution is to distribute energy intake over two to three smaller meals during the non-fasting interval. This may help you avoid post-meal Hy¬perglycaemia. As with diet, your daily exercise should be less intense to avoid episodes of Hypoglycaemia. If you are taking prescribed oral medications and insulin, do consult your doctor to discuss the risks, which will vary from person to person. If I am living with diabetes, do I need to go on a special diet during Ramadan? The good news is if you are already following a balanced diet, as is recommended for everyone, living with type 2 diabetes or not, then there is a big chance that you do not have to change the ingredients of your diet. In fact you should eat as you normally do, with the only difference being the time you eat your meals, rather than quantity or type of food consumed. The Ramadan diet should be kept simple and contain foods from all the food groups including:Bread, cereals or rice.Meat, chicken, fish or beans.Milk, laban or yogurt.Fruits and vegetables Iftar is the meal that breaks the fast, just after sunset, after the long hours of fasting. It is important however
that it remains a meal and does not become a feast! One other thing to be particularly aware of is the risk of increasing blood sugar levels after Iftar, especially if you eat sweet food. Also, you must take special care to drink plenty of water during the nonfasting hours, so that you remain comfortably hydrated during fasting hours. At Suhoor you should eat starchy carbohydrates which release energy slowly, such as multigrain bread, oat-based cereals, basmati rice together with beans, pulses, lentils fruit and vegetables. Other foods which will keep your blood glucose levels more stable throughout the fast include pitta bread, chapattis and semolina. As with all meals, eat sensibly, do not over eat and remember to drink plenty of water. What are the risks of fasting while living with diabetes during pregnancy?Pregnant women are strongly advised not to fast, and indeed Islam releases a pregnant woman from fasting during Ramadan. However, some still like to fast and if diabetes (including gestational diabetes) is also present, this is considered a high-risk scenario that requires intensive care. Pregnancy involves a state of increased insensitivity to insulin and insulin secretion.During fasting, blood glucose levels are generally lower but post-meal glucose and insulin levels remain substantially higher in healthy pregnant women than in women who are not pregnant. Elevated blood glucose levels during pregnancy may be associated with increased risk for major congenital abnormalities. It should also be remembered that the issues concerning the management of type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes also apply to pregnant women, along with more frequent monitoring and insulin dose adjustment. Is it Ok for children to fast, and what are the guidelines? In Islamic teaching, children are not required to fast for Ramadan until they reach the age of puberty. However, in many families, younger children enjoy participating and are encouraged to practice their fasting. It's important to make children aware of what fasting involves and to then to practice fasting for a few hours at a time, although fasting for children under the age of seven or eight isn't advisable.Children living with diabetes who choose to fast during Ramadan do pose a management challenge for paediatricians as the majority of guidelines and data on safety and metabolic impact of fasting are based on practice and studies on the adult population. It is very important that fasting only takes place under the watchful eye of the child’s doctor. Here are some recent seasonal quotes from ICLDC’s s p e c i a l i s t s : I C L D C ’s D e p u t y Medical Director, Consultant Diabetologist and Endocrinologist, Dr Saf Naqvi:Pregnant women are strongly advised not to fast, and indeed Islam releases a pregnant woman from fasting during Ramadan. However, some still like to fast and if diabetes (including gestational diabetes) is also present, this is considered a high-risk scenario that requires intensive care. It's important to make children aware of what fasting involves and to then to practice fasting for a few hours at a time, although fasting for children under the age of seven or eight isn't advisable. Indeed, in Islamic teaching, children are not required to fast for Ramadan until they reach the age of puberty. It is good to take some moderate exercise just before you break your fast at Iftar, and again just before going to bed, as well as right before Suhoor. It will be quite warm during Ramadan this year and outdoor exercise might not always be the best option, so try climbing the stairs. Start slowly and gradually with two flights at a time and refrain from pushing yourself too hard during the first few days.ICLDC’s Internal Medicine Specialist, Dr Farhana Bin Lootah:Exercise is an important contributor to achieving and maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and can help reduce the risk of developing diabetes by 58 per cent.As simple as it may sound, a brisk walk for 30 minutes a day, five times a week greatly reduces the chance of developing diabetes.Exercise is especially effective in minimising the risk when part of a three-way combination of a regular exercise practise, a balanced diet and maintaining a normal body weight. It makes absolute sense to maintain an exercise practice throughout the Holy Month, just changing the times for exercise and food intake according to the Ramadan guidelines.

oredoo today announced the launch of a new study, ‘New H o r i z o n s : I n d o n e s i a ’s Digital Generation, which examines the aspirations of young people across Indonesia. The release builds upon the body of research developed through Ooredoo’s online survey, ‘New Horizons: Young, Arab and Connected’, which surveyed more than 10,500 young adults in 17 countries across the MENA region at the beginning of 2014.Taken together, both reports represent some of the most in-depth research yet undertaken on young people’s digital attitudes and aspirations. understanding and the same percentage believetechnology is the basis of a modern, forward-thinking and functional society There are strong parallels in the MENA region, where New Horizons’ research found that: •Nine in 10 young MENA citizens believe that access to the Internet can help them realise their personal aspirations for employment and entrepreneurial opportunities. •81% of young Arabs are optimistic about their immediate futures, despite reporting significant economic and educational hurdles. •91% also believe that technology is the basis of a modern, forwardthinking and functioning society, but that its potential as an economic tool has not yet been realised for young people across MENA. More than1,400 men and women aged between 18 and 30 from Indonesia participated in the online survey. The research highlights the appetite for more advanced Internet penetration among Indonesian youth, as well astheir attitudes towards economic and education related issues, particularly in relation to finding a job and starting a business.H.E. Sheikh Abdullah Bin Mohammed Bin Saud Al Thani, Chairman, Ooredoo, said “Indonesian youth are hungry to
improve their career prospects, educate themselves, become more entrepreneurial and broaden their horizons by connecting with each other and the rest of the world. This research demonstrates that young people in Indonesia understand the transformative power of technology and the opportunities provided by ICT. They share the same ambition to contribute to their society as their MENA peers, in addition to their willingness to use digital technology to better their lives.Responses captured by the research are overwhelmingly positive about the potential social and economic benefits the ICT sector could for Indonesia. However, the main barrier to realising Indonesia’s potential remains basic infrastructure, according to respondents. When asked how they would rate the Internet connection speed provided by telecommunication operators, only 62% considered it to be good. Of those in rural locations, 60% who have Internet access were frustrated by poor Internet coverage and 82% with slow connections.Respondents said that these frustrations are preventing them from taking full advantage of the Internet, with 91% claiming that they do not spend as much time online as they would like to.Many respondents recognised the importance of using the Internet for business purposes (99%), to search for skilled workers (96%) and to source funding online (97%). However, when asked how easy they believed it was to carry out these kinds of activities, a significant number said that they found it difficult. The research identified an increasing appetite for smartphones across Indonesia, with 58% of respondents claiming they regularly use a smartphone that is connected to the Internet. In rural areas, 60% of respondents want to be using smartphones, trading in their basic mobile phones within the next 12 months. Tablet usage is expected to increase by 8% but uptake will be hindered by initial costs of the tablet devices.Alexander Rusli, CEO of Indosat, said:This is an extremely exciting time for Indonesia as it enters a critical stage of its digital evolution and Indosat is proud to be an integral part of this journey. The study supports our belief that ICT has a vital role in helping the country’s young people realise their full economic potential and it provides valuable insights for identifying opportunities to help them do so. Indosat, alongside our parent company Ooredoo, is committed to enriching peoples’ lives and stimulating human growth in the communities where it operates and we know the New Horizon study findings will help us and others to continue this work.

Guest speeches, discussions about books and case studies illustrating important lessons for new entrepreneurs will also be part of the workshop.Dr. Fred Moavenzadeh, President, Masdar Institute, said: “The summer workshop at MIT will provide Emirati participants with a global perspective on innovation and building additional capabilities. The support of the UAE leadership continues to enable us to offer specially designed courses to the youth. We believe the
workshop will prove beneficial to the participants in their academic and professional lives.Participants will choose between two options – one on the MIT Professional Education (PE) course on ‘Energy, Sustainability, or the second being Life Cycle Assessment’ or ‘Beyond Smart Cities’.The program will include interactive sessions on innovation, workshops at the MIT Self Assembly Lab, and methodologies to help build innovation-driven start-ups. The UAE national youth from Masdar Institute will also get an opportunity to visit some of the most successful young startup companies at the MassChallenge Accelerator, the innovation district in Boston, and museums.Mouza M. Al Kaabi of the Engineering Systems and Management program believes the workshop will increase her understanding of 3D printing and connect it with recent findings in the field to further prepare her for her research work.Al Kaabi said:The workshops in 3D printing are related to my research topic. I read about Skylar Tibbits and the self-assembly lab when I first decided to work with 3D printing as a tool for sustainable design. I am also exploring smart materials to understand the methods and tools used to make the composite materials, to reach certain properties that outperform the conventional material used in today’s construction. I hope to conduct this research that will be tested through 3D printing.

of the respondents reported visiting official social media pages or using their personal social media accounts for sourcing information on public services. Of the 63% who do utilize government social media pages, 74% only use it to access information on government services and entities, while giving feedback, sending complaints or new ideas to government ranked lower.Fadi Salem, Director of the Governance and Innovation Program at the Mohammed Bin Rashid School of Government, and co-author of the report, said: “We are still in a beginning of an era where technology is empowering the public and allowing for collaboration opportunities between government and society. With around 82 million Facebook users and 5.8 million active Twitter users in the Arab world today, more than 22 percent of Arabs are actively using social media platforms in innovative ways.Additionally, the report findings suggests that increased connectivity, coupled with the low levels of quality and accessibility of public services in the region prompted many civil society structures to utilize social media tools to fill gaps in service delivery. “Social media is providing a growing space for the ‘3rd sector’ in many Arab countries. Around 42% of respondents in our research said that civic organizations in their country were using social media to deliver some services that the government was not providing. This not only highlights the disruptive nature of new informational flows facilitated by social media tools, but also the relatively low levels of trust between government and society,Salem added.Growth of social media usage in Arab world has been consistently strong, with the number of users in 2014
MINIMAL INVASIVE SURGERIES REDUCE IMPACT OF BLOOD LOSS International Modern Hospital offers keyhole surgeries with a host of benefits for patients By Qadeer Ahmad Siddiqui Dubai UAE:
W
ith the impact of blood loss during surgeries becoming a major concern, the concept of keyhole surgeries is largely gaining prominence. Through recent advancements in medical techniques, minimally invasive methods have become the standard for many procedures, making transfusions even less necessary.International Modern Hospital (IMH), a private general hospital offering a variety of services with multiple specialties in Dubai, conducts several types of minimal invasive techniques and alternatives for a number of surgical procedures. While there are many benefits to this procedure, one of the main reasons is reduced impact on blood loss, which sometimes leads to patient deaths. Speaking about the
techniques, Dr. Rohit Kumar, S p e c i a l i s t G e n e r a l Surgeon,IMH,said,Minimal invasive surgery enables us to make sure that blood is not wasted during surgical procedures. With smaller incisions being made during this procedure, a patient stay is shorter and recovery time is faster, there is also reduced scarring and lesser infections during surgery.Marking the recent World Blood Donor’s Day on 14th June, IMH has taken a pledge to spread awareness about the importance of conserving and contributing blood, whereby it is available during emergencies, added Dr. Rohit. “As part of our commitment, we are planning to organize events to encourage blood donation by coordinating with volunteers, patients and the community at large, to support this noble cause.
