NEW CEILING ENABLES BUILDINGS TO HANDLE GCC’S HARSH CLIMATE Middle East’s Green Building Market Set to Reach USD 23 Billion by 2016, with UAE as Region’s Leader; Dutch Firm Hunter Douglas Launches Ceiling that Resists Corrosion, Handles Wind Speed of 150 km/h, and Lasts 50 Years Without Inspection By Qadeer Ahmad Siddiqui Dubai UAE: utch firm Hunter Douglas has launched a new ceiling that can safely handle the GCC’s harsh climate while promoting sustainable building design.Sustainable building is booming in the Middle East, and is set to grow from USD 17.9 billion in 2012 to USD 23 billion by 2016, according to Green Middle East. The UAE is the region’s leader in sustainable design, hosting more than twothirds of the GCC’s 1,236 LEED-certified buildings, driven by Dubai’s Green Building codes and Abu Dhabi’s Estimada initiative.Unlocking the potential for Middle East developers and architects to design stunning and sustainable buildings, Hunter Douglas has developed a unique ceiling that resists corrosion, handles wind velocities of up to 150 km/hour, and can last for 50 years without inspection.Hunter Douglas has successfully installed the 2,500 square meter ground floor ceiling for De Rotterdam, The Netherlands’ largest multifunctional building, designed by awardwinning firm OMA. The ceiling stretches from outside to inside, and is separated by a glass façade.Kees van Casteren, Associate-inCharge, OMA, said: “We wanted the building’s exterior to cross over into its interior as seamlessly as possible. It was not a system readily available on the market. Hunter

D

Douglas took up the challenge to create a ceiling that matched our ideas.Hunter Douglas developed a storm-proof construction mounted above the ceiling panels, gave the aluminium

exterior ceiling a corrosionresistant coating, and produced reports on strength and wind load to ensure the ceiling will last for at least 50 years without i n s p e c t i o n . Te r r y Wo u d e n b e r g , P r o j e c t Advisor, Hunter Douglas, said, “The building is situated on the banks of the Meuse River, which means it will face heavy winds, moisture, and corrosion factors. We applied aluminium grids with a corrosion-resistant coating and anchored the ceiling with a more stable back construction, making the ceiling storm-proof.To meet strict lighting and acoustic requirements for the interior ceiling, Hunter Douglas produced the ceiling with two layers. The top layer ’s reflective panels hide lighting and ventilation systems, while the lower layer’s grid ceiling has perforated panels that absorb sound a n d m i n i m i z e reverberation. In between are fluorescent lamp holders, with light bouncing off the reflective surface and spreading inside the building.

MEGA MALL DEVELOPMENT CRITICAL TO UNLOCKING DUBAI’S VISON, SAYS CLUTTONS By Qadeer Ahmad Siddiqui Dubai UAE: he unveiling of Dubai Holding’s proposals for The Mall of the World will form part of a strengthening mall development pipeline that is critical to unlocking Dubai’s vision, says Cluttons.Dubai Holding has unveiled the details behind its much awaited Mall of the World, which is set to also include the world's largest indoor theme park and a theatre district to rival London’s West End, or New York’s B r o a d w a y. I t f o l l o w s Nakheel’s recently revealed plans for a 6.15 million sqft mall on the Deira Islands, complete with an adjoining night market and amphitheatre.Faisal Durrani, International Research and Business Development Manager at international real estate consultancy Cluttons, commented: “Shopping is already synonymous with Dubai and has proved to be one of the city's key lynchpins in its meteoric rise as the Middle East's business capital. Dubai has a very significant portfolio of existing shopping malls and the string of new mall developments looks set to push Dubai further ahead of the region’s other emerging economies.Dubai's malls have thus far been fairly traditional, offering global retail brands in a single 'shopping destination’. During the last property cycle, we witnessed the inclusion of leisure attractions at some of the city's malls, with Ski Dubai, iFly and the Dubai Aquarium all helping the Emirate's malls position themselves as leisure destinations in their own right. As development across the city ramps up in the lead up to the 2020 World Expo and the Emirate's vision of

T

playing host to 20 million tourists annually, the focus of activity has moved strongly towards the retail and hospitality sectors. Cluttons currently expects some 7 million sqft of new malls over 1 million sqft in size to enter the market over the next two years, excluding all current city wide mall expansion activity.Durrani added: “With authorities working towards an ambitious annual visitor target, the current hotel and serviced apartment portfolio in the emirate of approximately 80,000 keys is going to have to grow significantly. And it's not just a question of swelling the hotel development pipeline, but a complex infrastructure of leisure and entertainment facilities have to be built to help drive Dubai's vision. The Mall of the World represents a significant milestone in the evolution of Dubai's shopping malls. Not only will the mega project include 100 hotels and some 20,000 keys, it will also offer visitors 7 kilometres of climate controlled promenades, something that is offered nowhere else in the world.Durrani concluded: “I see this as Dubai's answer to London's Oxford Street and Paris’ Champs Elysee, which are both iconic shopping avenues. The added climate control element will for the first time allow the emergence of what will effectively be Dubai's answer to a high street. At the same time, The Mall of the World will pave the way for the next generation of the city's malls, where the shopping element is combined in equal parts with entertainment and leisure facilities, creating destinations in theory own right, while catalysing the development of wider surrounding areas.

He stated that the first real hero of the Filipinos, Lapu Lapu, was a Muslim figure who fought hard to protect the faith of the people. “We have only one God, one Creator and his name is Allah. Moreover, Islam was the first religion of the Philippines and therefore we are not changing our religion. We are just returning to the original roots of our faith,” he said. Nuh, who has a wealth of experience in spreading the true teachings of Islam among non-Muslims, has served at prestigious da’wah organizations in both KSA and the Philippines for many years.

NUMBER OF SYRIAN CHILDREN IN NEED INCREASED BY 2 MILLION WHILE UNICEF’S FUNDING CRISIS LOOMS By Qadeer Ahmad Siddiqui Dubai UAE: ell into the fourth year of the Syrian crisis, its impact

disease outbreaks including polio and measles and a break-down of vital services like water, sanitation and education,

on children is becoming ever more devastating, newly-released United Nations data shows. The data, which accompany a revised UN funding appeal for its response to the crisis across the region, shows that 6.5 million Syrian children now need immediate humanitarian assistance, whether inside the country or living as refugees. The number is an increase of more than two million compared to just one year ago. These figures confirm the devastating impact this conflict is having on the lives of Syria’s children,” said Maria Calivis, UNICEF Regional Director for the Middle East and North Africa.Children are seeing their homes, schools, health centres and communities targeted and destroyed. Millions of dreams and hopes are being shattered. This is no time for the world to look away. It’s a sense of loss and fear that Syrian children themselves continue to convey vividly. Ala’a*, 13- year old boy from Aleppo who now lives as a refugee in Turkey, told a UNICEF staffer: “We left our village to escape the bombing. We drove for three hours to get close to the border and once night fell, we walked another three hours to cross into Turkey. There were many checkpoints along the way. I saw people carrying guns and I was scared. The violence, coupled with repeated displacement, mounting evidence of

are prompting UNICEF to redouble its efforts to reach as many children as possible inside war-torn Syria and in the n e i g h b o u r i n g countries.Inside Syria so far this year and despite huge obstacles due to the violence and access restrictions, UNICEF with partners has helped ensure the availability of safe water for nearly 17 million people, as well as supporting the vaccination of 2.9 million children against polio part of an unprecedented regional immunization campaign reaching 25 million children. Meanwhile, as part of efforts to meet the needs of children directly affected by the conflict, UNICEF has provided 114,000 children with education materials and 34,000 chi l d re n w i th psychological support. But lack of funding threatens UNICEF’s ability to continue providing vital assistance to children; the agency has a gap of US$ 487 million to cover its emergency programmes for children inside Syria and in neighbouring countries by end of 2014.We are very grateful to our donors who have been extremely generous. But without fresh resources our operations including life-saving water a n d s a n i t a t i o n interventions for refugees in Iraq, Lebanon and Jordan – will inevitably interrupted and some might be completely stopped, said Calivis.

EVIAN BRINGS A TASTE OF THE FRENCH ALPS TO SHEIKH ZAYED ROAD World famous water brand launches its newest bottle packaging in the UAE By Qadeer Ahmad Siddiqui Dubai UAE: he launch of evian’s newly-designed bottle in the UAE has received a big boost with the unveiling of an outdoor display campaign on Dubai’s Sheikh Zayed Road. The giant 3D evian hoarding

T

recreates the new-look bottles nestled among the mountainous peaks of the French Alps.Located at the service road of Al Manara Street along Sheikh Zayed Road, the larger-than-life installation showcases the design breakthrough of the new bottle as well as extolling the source of its pure and natural water from Evian-Les-Bains. The outdoor display consists of three evian bottles with the French Alps serving as a backdrop, covering a total width of 40 metres, height of 14 meters with a total weight of more than 20 tons. The elements in the outdoor display were each stacked one on top of each other, it would be longer than an Olympic-sized ice skating rink. The launch of the new bottle design is a significant step for evian here in the UAE as we are the first market in the Middle East and the third in the world – along with the United States and Japan – to introduce the new design. With our new bottle, consumers are reminded of the water’s purity and freshness,” said Renaud Marchand, Middle East Zone director for evian, Volvic Export of Danone – responsible for bringing evian to the region.Sleeker and with cleaner lines, the

new evian bottle uses transparency to celebrate its contents: evian Natural Mineral Water, a distinctly pure water, as nature intended. The bottle sports a “label-less” look. Its front features a simplified, elegant reduction of the previous logo design. A panorama of

mountains celebrates the water’s source in a corner of the French Alps - a region protected by the farming community to ensure evian water maintains its pure, natural form. The bottle’s simple shape and beveled mountain ridges echo the simplicity and regality of the water’s home. The brand’s special story is told on the back of the bottle, and “evian” is carved smartly into the base as a playful design touch.Discovered in 1789, and bottled since 1826, evian water traces its roots to the birth of the French Alps. Each drop of evian begins as rain or snow high in the pristine peaks of the French Alps, and then travels through a vast mineral aquifer deep within the mountains before being bottled directly from the spring in Evian-Les-Bains. This unique, 15-year journey is the secret to evian’s purity and unique, natural taste. It’s also a journey that gives it rich and unique minerals. Entirely natural! The new bottle design is available now in the 500ml & 330ml sizes at away from home channel (including hotels, restaurants, cafes, petrol stations and cinemas) across the UAE. Additional formats set to debut in the following months.

SCHNEIDER ELECTRIC INTEGRATES STRUXUREWARE™ DCIM SOLUTION WITH HP ITSM FOR CONVERGED MANAGEMENT OF IT AND FACILITIES By Qadeer Ahmad Siddiqui Dubai UAE: chneider Electric, a global specialist in e n e r g y management, recently announced at HP Discover that the integration of its Data Centre Infrastructure Management (DCIM) solution, StruxureWare™ for Data Centres, with HP's Universal Configuration Management Database (UCMDB), is complete. Enabling an increased level of communication between IT Service Management (ITSM) and DCIM platforms, this integration provides data centre managers with more cohesive management of data centre assets.Soeren Jensen, Vice President, Enterprise Management and Software, Schneider Electric, said: “Today’s data centre managers are increasingly challenged by enduring silos between IT and facilities that lead to a b r e a k d o w n i n communication, making it difficult to take the first steps towards streamlined operations, improved efficiency and reduced costs.Through this collaboration with HP to provide a holistic approach to managing IT business process assets and workloads, we are bridging the gap between IT and facilities infrastructure and arming IT service providers with the data and insights they need to optimise the efficiency of their facilities.Typically, DCIM and ITSM platforms operate in isolation from each other, with data centre managers utilising different teams and resources to manage change within and between each domain. This increases the possibility of resource conflicts which can be time consuming and costly. By integrating Schneider Electric’s StruxureWare for Data Centres suite with H P ’ s U C M D B , communication and asset data reconciliation between the solutions platforms for DCIM and ITSM will be enabled. The integrated approach allows managers to control both IT services and physical infrastructure within the data centre in a holistic and seamless manner. Access to HP's ‘Single Instance of Truth’ solution provides enhanced

S

visibility into asset performance and lifecycle of the data centre – based on warranty, lease or other ownership parameters across all HP IT management platforms. Inter-platform asset and event change reporting can also alert data centre operators to potential asset conflicts, such as limitations on infrastructure or service policy violations. Combined, the capability to obtain this level of detail regarding asset performance provides operators with an improved understanding of impact scenarios at the infrastructure, virtual machine, and customer levels. The linkage of IT services and processes to physical assets as well as to power and cooling requirements enables data centre operators to directly associate IT with power consumption. The link allows for the measurement of workloadt o - w a t t s e q u i v a l e n c y, helping data centre managers to capture the true total cost of operations for end-user services. Rick Einhorn, Vice President, Worldwide Data Centre Consulting at HP, said: “Operating DCIM and ITSM platforms independent of one another is not only costly and time consuming, but can make it difficult for data centre operators to manage IT and facility functions smoothly and efficiently.HP's Universal Configuration Management Database will now help customers to effectively leverage Schneider Electric’s DCIM solution, StruxureWare for Data Centres, by enabling enhanced communication with ITSM for more holistic a n d i n t e g r a t e d management of data centre assets.Schneider Electric’s end-to-end DCIM software suite enables data centres to monitor, operate, analyse a n d o p t i m i s e p o w e r, cooling, security and energy. Tested for interoperability and integration, as per HP’s Software Enterprise Management Alliances Program (EMAP), the integration with HP UCMDB is part of StruxureWare Data Centre Operation v7.4 and is available for immediate purchase and installation.

D

Did you know a refrigerator may use 25% more energy than necessary if it is kept 10° colder than needed Did you know placing a fridge or freezer in direct sunlight or next to an oven or other heat source can increase energy consumption substantially. Did you know keeping your refrigerator full actually helps increase energy efficiency because there is less air to cool when space is taken up. Did you know placing uncovered foods in the refrigerator release moisture and make the compressor work harder Did you know the longer the door of the refrigerator stays open, the more hot air gets inside making the refrigerator spend energy cooling it down.

Did you know some new refrigerators are so energysmart they use less electricity than a light bulb. Did you know the larger the refrigerator, the greater the energy consumption. But one large refrigerator will use less energy than two smaller ones with the same total volume.Refrigerators with freezers on top use 10 to 15 percent less energy than side-by-side models of equivalent size. Did you know defrosting improves energy efficiency by using a heater to melt away built-up ice and frost, allowing for the free flow of cold air throughout the compartment. Did you know regardless of how much food you keep in your fridge. The energy saving mode saves energy when you're not using the fridge. SFS CONFIRMS SUPER SIX SPOT AFTER VICTORY IN WINNER-TAKE-ALL CLASH AGAINST IMG AT RAMADAN INDOOR CRICKET TOURNAMENT AT THE ICC ACADEMY AT DUBAI SPORTS CITY By Qadeer Ahmad Siddiqui Dubai UAE: humping 89-run success means SFS becomes third side confirmed in Super Six, after holder Danube Lions and DBMSC Steel; Oxford Marine and Radio 4 almost there; Pool F still delicately poised with Charterhouse and HSBC both believing they can make it t h r o u g h . To u r n a m e n t involves 24 teams with 54 matches over 20 days to decide the champion team; Grand Final on 19 July; action starts at 8.15pm every evening with free entry for spectators.ICC Academy Head Coach Mudassar Nazar: “That was impressive from SFS. To secure a win as convincing as that when the pressure was on was outstanding. It was the kind of display that will make the other teams sit up and take notice and if SFS can reproduce that kind of form against those other sides in the Super Six then it will be a genuine contender for the title”.ICC Academy Manager Will Kitchen: “The high quality action has been great to watch and as we move towards the Super Six stage that is only likely to continue”.Dubai Sports City General Manager – Sport Business Maqbul Dudhia: “The Ramadan Indoor Cricket Tournament at the ICC Academy continues to produce some great indoor cricket and it is an event we, at Dubai Sports City, are immensely proud of” Follow the Ramadan Indoor Cricket Tournament at www.facebook.com/ICCAc ademy or on Twitter by following @ICCAcademy http://www.dubaisportscity. ae/SFS produced a superb all-round display to crush IMG by 89 runs and seal a place in the Super Six stage of the Ramadan Indoor Cricket Tournament at the ICC Academy. The two sides had each won their opening two matches in Pool D to set up the winnertake-all encounter and it was SFS that rose to the challenge to claim top spot.SFS batted first and racked up an impressive 73 before then producing a consummate performance with the ball and in the field, restricting IMG to a score of minus 16 runs. And by winning the match and the pool, SFS joined holders the Danube Lions (Pool A) and last year’s runner-up DBMSC Steel (Pool B) as sides confirmed as through to the next stage of the tournament. Each match is 12 overs per side and sees eight players batting in pairs for three overs each, with five runs deducted every time a wicket falls.SFS’s score of 73 was impressive but could have been even better but for the fact that three wickets were lost in the final over of the innings. That meant the last three overs of the innings yielded just eight runs, but after three previous three-over periods of 25, 21 and 19 runs it still left SFS in a strong position. And that was a position SFS took full advantage of when IMG set out on its chase for victory. SFS took 12 wickets as only one three-over period

T

produced a positive number of runs – 13 during overs seven to nine.Player of the match was SFS’s Rinu, who set the tone with the bat for his side, scoring 16 runs as one of the opening batsmen before later bowling one over and taking one wicket at a cost of minus three runs.Although Danube and DBMSC Steel have already sealed their Super Six spots, there are still three berths up for grabs in that next stage of the tournament. Two of those berths look likely to go to Oxford Marine (Pool C) and Radio 4 (Pool E), although both still have work to do in their final matches to make absolutely sure of progress. And in Pool F HSBC is in control of affairs with two wins from two m a t c h e s , b u t Charterhouse, which has won its single match so far, is still very much in contention, with the meeting between the two shaping up as a potential pool decider. There are 24 teams in action, divided into six pools of four, with every team guaranteed a minimum of three matches. The winners of each pool will go forward to a Super Six stage, which will be followed by two playoff matches and then a Grand Final on Saturday evening, 19 July. All 54 matches are taking place at Dubai Sports City, in the largest permanent indoor cricket facility in the country. The six pools are made up as follows: A – Danube Lions, Sport360, Mumbai Kars, Warriors B – DBMSC Steel, Carfare, Park 11, Satwa Prince C – Oxford Marine, Darjeeling, Petrofac, SGS D – SFS, Khyber Oil, IMG Group, NBF E – Radio 4, Crystal Gallery, Trisl Properties, OMD F – Charterhouse, DSC, HSBC, NBQ Reflecting on SFS’s success against IMG and the situation in the tournament, ICC Academy Head Coach Mudassar Nazar, the former Pakistan all-rounder, said: “That was impressive from SFS. We know the players’ quality as they have been regulars in indoor cricket here at the ICC Academy but to secure a win as convincing as that when the pressure was on was outstanding. It was the kind of display that will make the other teams left in the competition sit up and take notice and if SFS can reproduce that kind of form against the other sides in the Super Six then it will be a genuine contender for the title. As for IMG, it was a sad end to the tournament for its players but those players can still be proud of what they have done and hopefully they can come back and use this experience in a positive way.The Ramadan Indoor Cricket Tournament is coming to the boil beautifully and the last ten days of action will be compelling viewing.ICC Academy Manager Will Kitchen said: “The high quality action in this Ramadan Indoor Cricket Tournament has been great

to watch and as we move towards the Super Six stage that is only likely to continue. The tournament, one of the highlights of our indoor cricket action here at Dubai Sports City, is going from strength to strength, and that is hardly a surprise given the players clearly love taking part – and no wonder given they are playing in the largest and best permanent indoor cricket facility in the country, a facility that is used regularly by many of the world’s top players.Every team has been guaranteed a minimum of three matches and when the lights are on and the spectators are cheering and shouting the atmosphere here really is fantastic. As we move towards the Super Six stage, with the best teams set to go head-to-head, we can expect some more outstanding play and with five runs deducted every time a wicket falls, matches really can turn on a moment’s quality or indecision. Every ball really does count.Matches get underway at 8.15 every evening with free entry for all spectators and with those matches taking place in the largest permanent, dedicated indoor cricket facility in the UAE it really is worth coming along to the ICC Academy to see indoor cricket at its very best.Dubai Sports City General Manager – Sports Business Mr Maqbul Dudhia added: “The Ramadan Indoor Cricket Tournament at the ICC Academy continues to produce some great indoor cricket and it is an event we, at Dubai Sports City, are immensely proud of.It is a tournament that brings together many of the best indoor cricketers in this country and with the airconditioned comfort of the arena, the largest permanent indoor cricket facility in this country, things will never get too hot for comfort, whatever the temperatures outside. The tournament also takes place in an arena used frequently by some of the world’s top players. As some examples, in the recent past we have seen the national squads of Pakistan, South Africa and Sri Lanka, as well as teams from the Pepsi Indian Premier League, all take advantage of what it has to offer. But the beauty of the ICC Academy is that those same world-class facilities are also available to anyone and everyone that wishes to use them, and this tournament is the perfect illustration of that fact. And the fact the tournament is taking place in the height of summer is another illustration that, at Dubai Sports City, we offer the

best in sport all the year round. We have not only the ICC Academy but also the Indoor Dome, which is the home of football at Dubai Sports City, featuring our excellent Socatots and Spanish Soccer Schools programmes overseen by former Real Madrid and Spain legend Michel Salgado and Head Coach Inaki Beni. And with our swimming academy and fitness suite set to open at the end of the summer, with The Els Club and the Butch Harmon School of Golf proving hugely popular, and with transport links including the Hessa Street extension and a regular bus service, the F29 from the Mall of the Emirates, meaning we are more accessible than ever, things just keep getting better and better at Dubai Sports City. The Ramadan Indoor C r i c k e t To u r n a m e n t ’ s partners include Sport360 and Radio 4 (both are Media Partners) and Crystal Gallery (Trophy Partner). Th e R a ma d a n In d o o r Cricket Tournament can be followed via Facebook and T w i t t e r a t www.facebook.com/ICCAc a d e m y a n d a t @ICCAcademy.Mr Kitchen added the tournament really is the tip of the iceberg in terms of what the ICC Academy offers.“We have junior coaching from Cricket Cubs, which starts for children of walking age, right through to under-18 level, and we are preparing for our summer camps to start,he said.We have expanded our coaching programmes this year to include off-site activities with GEMS schools across Dubai, something that has proved hugely successful, and our junior squads have toured Kenya and Nepal over the past year.We have just hosted a massive season of outdoor action including matches in the I C C W o r l d Tw e n t y 2 0 Qualifiers, the ICC Under19 Cricket World Cup and the Asian Cricket Council Under-19 Cup, plus practice for Pakistan, South Africa and Sri Lanka’s senior men’s teams and squads taking part in the Pepsi Indian Premier League. We also hosted a pre-tournament camp for five of the six Associate sides that took part in the ICC World Twenty20 in Bangladesh as well as the series between Pakistan and England’s physical disability teams, the second time we have had them as our guests in what were ground-breaking matches. It may be hot outside but thanks to our superb indoor and outdoor facilities we can offer action to all age-groups 365 days a year,” he added.

Encouragement is the big thing the coaches transfer to the children and to never give up.Dubai Sports City Football Academy Head Coach Inaki Beni: Souphiane is a great example to all the young players here, a lot of them with real potential, of what is possible. We are going to be following his steps, we wish him the best of luck and whenever he wants, the Spanish Soccer Schools are here for him.Dubai Sports City Director of Football Michel Salgado, the former Real Madrid and Spain legend: “Souphiane is just starting out on a long journey and there is no guarantee of success but the fact he is now in this position is great credit not only to him and his family but also to the Spanish Soccer School coaches who have been superb this year”.Dubai Sports City General Manager – Sport Business Maqbul Dudhia: “Souphiane’s progress is another illustration that for anyone wanting to get involved in football, Dubai Sports ity is the place to be” In its first year of operation the Spanish Soccer Schools (SSS) coaching programme at Dubai Sports City has received the ultimate seal of approval with the news that one of its pupils, nine yearold Souphiane Ourzik, has been taken on as a junior by French Ligue 1 club Nantes. The youngster, who has spent the past 12 months working with the SSS coaches, is all set to relocate with his family to France in order to pursue his dream of becoming a p r o f e s s i o n a l footballer.Left-sided player Souphiane had a trial with the top-flight club during a family visit to France earlier this year and now the deal has been done to allow him to train at Nantes while continuing to pursue his studies.Souphiane’s father Mohammed said he and his son owed a great deal to the work of the SSS coaches, led by Head Coach Inaki Beni.It was an inspiration having Inaki as coach and there were good vibes between the two. That helps, said Mohammed. Souphiane liked the coaching and he was

Order of Merit Champion Michael Harradine via a countback after both golfers returned scores of 31. Harradine who is currently playing of a handicap of +3 was still happy with his third place finish as he begins his season’s campaign at Sharjah.Back in the morning shotgun it was scratch team member George Liu who finished in second spot with a score of 30 points, whilst regular winner Rory Thomson was third with a tally of 29

getting more advice from the coaches than ever before. He was listening carefully and we found the coaching very good compared to other setups.Encouragement is the big thing that Inaki and his coaches transfer to the children and to never give up.If the children do not do something right then they keep repeating it and repeating until they get it and we can see it. All the c h i l d r e n h a v e progressed. The SSS programme has been developed to enable children to control the game of football through maximum ball possession while, at the same time, emphasising the i m p o r t a n c e o f enjoyment. The coaches have been hand-picked by former Real Madrid and Spain legend Michel Salgado, part of his country’s squad at the FIFA World Cup in 2006, and now Director of Football at Dubai Sports City. Those coaches have the mandate to develop strong football players and encourage the children to live the SSS motto “Play well for football, play well for life” via the values of unity, p a s s i o n a n d skill.Souphiane was born in California but his father is French-Moroccan and his mother is from the Brittany region of France, with the family having been in Dubai for the past two years. He originally arrived at the SSS programme tagging along with his older brother Yaccine but as soon as he started kicking the ball around on the sidelines with Miguel Salgado, Michel’s son, the coaches immediately sat u p a n d t o o k notice.Souphiane came along with Yaccine at the beginning of the season and Michel and I were straight away talking about him – we liked him, said Inaki Beni.He came to us and when we went to Spain to play a tournament earlier this year he did really well.He is a player with a lot of potential. His techniques have improved and although tactically he has to develop a lot, he is nine so he has got time.In France the competition will be stronger and that will help him improve but it is a great example to all the young players here, a lot of them with real potential, of what is possible. We always say the same thing with the young kids, that it is a long process, it is a long path

and they will go year by year and step by step. But the most important thing is always to study very hard with football a consequence of doing things properly in every way.Souphiane has lots of talent and we all hope he can apply that talent to become a real success,” he added.Yaccine, five years older than Souphiane, also trialed with Nantes and although he was not taken on, he will continue to train and play at a feeder club, with Nantes likely to monitor his development over the coming year. Those children and parents interesting in getting involved in football at Dubai Sports City and possibly following in Souphiane’s footsteps can find out more by calling +971 4 448 1555, emailing football@dxbsport.com or v i s i t i n g www.footballacademy.com .Summer camps for children from three years old right through to teenagers are about to start at Dubai Sports City’s Indoor Dome, including its FIFA-approved full-sized artificial pitch. And registrations are also open for the new term of both Socatots, the coaching course for youngsters from walking age to five years old, and also Spanish Soccer Schools, which will be beginning its second year of operation.Inaki Beni added a personal farewell when he said:I am upset Souphiane is leaving us after a year of great work but he is a special talent. What we now need him to do is to focus on his studies, and if he keeps working hard at his football then things will develop naturally in that way too.I am going to be following your steps Souphiane, and wish you the best of luck and remember, whenever you want, we at the Spanish Soccer Schools are here for you.Michel Salgado said: “We are delighted with the progress that Souphiane has made with us here at Spanish Soccer Schools and that progress shows we are doing the right things in the way we are coaching kids at Dubai Sports City. We wish him and his brother well as they pursue their dreams.Souphiane is just starting out on a long journey and there is no guarantee of success but the fact he is now in this position is great credit not only to him and his family but also to the Spanish Soccer School coaches who have been superb this year. And Souphiane’s switch to France is the latest success story in what has been a great first year of operation for the Spanish Soccer Schools programme. We had over 700 children enroll with the Spanish Soccer Schools,

and with more than 100 more at Socatots, things are going very well, especially as those numbers are all set to grow next term.We have worldclass coaches and worldclass facilities and we look forward to teaching more and more children how to play the Spanish way, with unity, passion and skill, over the coming months and years.Kellogg’s is the Official Sponsor of the Dubai Sports City Football Academy and the Spanish Soccer Schools and Socatots coaching schemes, and the exclusive cereal and healthy snacks partner for football at Dubai Sports City.Dubai Sports City General Manager Sport Business Mr Maqbul Dudhia added: This great news about Souphiane is another illustration that for anyone wanting to get involved in football, Dubai Sports City is the place to be.We have world-class coaching and world-class facilities, with outdoor artificial and grass pitches, and our Indoor Dome allows us to stage football 365 days a year, whatever the weather outside. In the past 18 months we have hosted three top European club sides for training Swansea City and West Ham United from the English Premier League, and Russian Premier League side Anzhi Makhachkala and have recently been the location for the football reality show The Victorious broadcast on Dubai TV, featuring our own Michel Salgado and also Argentina football l e g e n d D i e g o Maradona. For adults we have well-established s o c i a l a n d c o r p o r a te football leagues and with all our pitches floodlit we can offer football during the night as well as the day. With the ICC Academy and the Butch Harmon School of Golf in successful operation over a number of years and with our fitness suite and swimming academy set to open later this year, Dubai Sports City is going from strength to strength and will continue to do so over the coming weeks, months and years.Mr Dudhia added:Our facilities here are outstanding and, situated just a few minutes’ drive away from Sheikh Zayed Road, easily accessible. These are exciting times for all of us at Dubai Sports City and there has never been a better time for people to come and see for themselves what we have to offer. We provide the chance for people to get fit or stay fit in comfortable surroundings and really enjoy the very best of what Dubai has to offer from a sporting and lifestyle perspective.”
