REGIONAL NOC’S REVISIT THEIR OPERATIONAL STRUCTURE IN LINE WITH INTERNATIONAL DEVELOPMENTS By Qadeer Ahmad Siddiqui Dubai UAE: he Valdez oil spill of 1989 was the trigger for international energy companies to re-examine how they structured their operations. Heavily capitalized with a high-risk profile, the oil and gas industry realised they needed to change their management ethos to avoid costly incidents and remain competitive. Middle East energy operators, benefitting from the experience of their international counterparts, are now doing the same. One such company leading the way is The Bahrain Petroleum Company (BAPCO).Utilising the experiences of Chevron, BAPCO has developed and implemented an Operational Excellence Management System and are officially supporting the upcoming Operational Excellence Middle East Forum. To be held at the Intercontinental Regency Hotel in Bahrain, the Forum will be taking place from the 28–30 September in Manama.Organised by The Energy Exchange and World Refining Association the event will be held under the patronage of the National Oil and Gas Authority of Bahrain. Speaking about the reason for hosting the event in Bahrain, Maxwell Thompson, conference director for The Energy Exchange, said:The commitment of Bahrain to Operational Excellence is in line with its standing in the 2014 Index of Economic Freedom Report which highlighted the country’s competitive and efficient regulatory environment, and which is also reflected through the country’s petroleum sector which accounts for 60% of export receipts and 70% of Government revenue”.A number of projects within this sector such as the new crude oil pipeline between Saudi Arabia and Bahrain, the modernization of the Sitra Refinery and the offshore LNG import terminal are part of the revitalization of Bahrain’s hydro-carbon industry and make Bahrain a dynamic and logical choice for the second edition of Operational Excellence Middle East, continued Maxwell. The first day of the main conference will be opened with an official address given by H.E. Sheik Ahmed bin Mohammed Al Khalifa, Minister of Finance and Minister in Charge of Oil & Gas Affairs for the Kingdom of Bahrain. A key focus of the programme on day one will be mapping how the region’s operators are implementing

T

operational excellence today and what they have learned from the experiences of their International counterparts. With industry representatives from Bahrain, Oman, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates as well as India, Canada and the United States the programme will also address the future of Operational Excellence and how it is evolving to ensure c o n t i n u o u s improvement. The second day of the conference will examine the three key principles of Operational Excellence: leadership, management of people and change before moving on to address a major concern for operators within the region asset integrity, reliability and maintenance. Preceding the main conference, Gary Downs, former Lean Master Technical Authority with Shell and now Oil & Gas Lead for Secora, will deliver a master class addressing the practical approaches to increasing productivity, while reducing waste. Using interactive exercises alongside multiple case studies Gary will demonstrate successful approaches that have been employed and that deliver sustainable benefits.Keynote speakers sharing their insight and experience at Operational Excellence Middle East include: Hafedh Al-Qassab, General Manager, Refining Division, Bahrain Petroleum Company; Dale McNeil, Continuous Improvement Advisor, Imperial Oil; Jay Raj, Specialist Engineer Reliability & Maintenance Engineering Support Division, Qatar Gas; Mohammed Al Hinai, Head of Risk Management, Oman Oil Company; Jassim Darwish, Head of EHS, GPIC; Aref Al Awadi, Senior Leader Business Process Development, PIC; Waddah Al Hashemi, Head of EHSQ Compliance, ENOC; Mark Hodgkinson Operational Excellence Head, Bahrain Petroleum Company; Elyas Mandourah, Manager Support Services Maintenance Department, PetroRabigh and more.International technology providers including Honeywell, Dupont, and Petro IT will also be providing insight on leveraging technology to maximize operational excellence initiatives further highlighting the aim of the conference to provide a comprehensive programme for those already involved in operational excellence as well as those about to begin the journey.

ATELIERS LOUIS MOINET RECEIVES AN IIPP AWARD AT UNESCO By Qadeer Ahmad Siddiqui Dubai UAE: hat better reward could there be to celebrate its tenth anniversary? Founded in 2004, Ateliers Louis Moinet has just received a Merit for Development award from the International Institute for Promotion and Prestige (IIPP) in cooperation with UNESCO. The highly sought-after prize is awarded to companies responsible for extraordinary achievements – and this is the first ever Merit for Development of Watchmaking Arts and Technologies. In its fifty years of existence, the IIPP has awarded only two other distinctions in the field of watchmaking. The renowned prize offers further fulfilment of the vocation of Ateliers Louis Moinet: reinstating Louis Moinet (who was born in Bourges in 1758 and died in Paris in 1853) in the pantheon of great watchmakers. A major milestone on the road to realising this ambition came in March 2013, when the firm unveiled the first chronograph in history – dating back to 1816 and

W

signed by Louis Moinet’s own hand. The timepiece m a r k e d t h e beginnings of highf r e q u e n c y chronometry – a whole century ahead of its time. From the outset, Ateliers Louis Moinet has been committed to making watches that reflect Louis Moinet’s g e n i u s a n d forerunner vision, in a blend of art and t e c h n o l o g y. Pioneering the use of out-of-this-world materials such as meteorite fragments from the Moon and Mars, Ateliers Louis Moinet has also distinguished itself by producing limited-edition pieces that skilfully match design with innovative technology a combination which has already won five Red Dot Awards, as well as an International Chronometry Competition prize. The IIPP award offers independent recognition of the overall work of Ateliers Louis Moinet, conferred by an international body that rewards excellence and the significant contributions of

an individual or company to their specific art. The firm joins previous awardwinners including NASA, the Russian Academy of Sciences, Porsche, IBM, Microsoft and Jacques Cousteau.This distinction confirms the legitimacy of our mission achieving due recognition for the merit of a visionary genius who successfully encapsulated the art of watchmaking and nurtured it towards unprecedented new developments. In the early 2000s, the name of Louis Moinet was all but forgotten;

now, he has found his rightful place as one of the greatest watchmakers of all time, says Jean-Marie Schaller, CEO and founder of Ateliers Louis Moinet. His Traité d’Horlogerie encyclopaedia of 1848 is nothing less than a philosopher’s stone for contemporary watchmaking and is probably only the tip of the iceberg as far as his work is concerned, with much more yet to be discovered. This is one of the rarest and most prestigious distinctions in the world, rewarding companies that have achieved the most remarkable feats at an international level,” said Mrs Gisèle Rutman, Executive Chair of IIPP.Today we are pleased to award the Merit for Development of Watchmaking Arts and Technologies to Ateliers Louis Moinet, by unanimous decision of the panel. The distinction was presented at a ceremony held on July 8, 2014 at the UNESCO Palace, Paris. Luis Moinet is available in the UAE exclusively through Damas in stores in Burj Al Arab, Mall of Emirates, Dubai Mall, Zabeel Saray and Mina Al Salam.

ADOR soon found themselves in a battle with the experienced Spanish team, led by Iker Martinez, and both boats were within 200- 400 metres of each other for most of the day and following night.Several well-timed sail changes and strong helming skills saw ADOR gain a small lead as its yacht Azzam approached Muckle Flugga, the northernmost point in the British Isles. From there, navigator Simon Fisher did a superb job of positioning the boat correctly for a shift in the wind which saw the team extend its slender lead to a more comfortable 30 miles. As the winds eased, the crew encountered more comfortable conditions along Ireland’s West coast but were still being pressed

h a r d b y t h e Spanish.Rounding the Fastnet rock first, ADOR then led the fleet home finishing in well ahead of the Spanish and smashing the 2012 Groupama vo70 monohull record by 1 day, 08 hours, 16 minutes and 27 seconds. This has

probably been harder on the crew than a leg of the Volvo Ocean Race,” said ADOR’s exhausted skipper Ian Walker at the finish. “With so many headlands, san d b a n ks a n d o th e r navigational hazards there

wasn’t a moment to relax, especially as all the teams were pushing each other so hard. Sifi, our navigator, barely put a foot wrong, and I’m so pleased with the attitude and work rate that the team put in during the race. Azzam is the name of our boat, and Azzam is the attitude of this great team. The conditions made for fantastic sailing, and it’s a great reward for both the sailors and the shore team who have worked so hard on our training and preparation, to have our first trophy in the cabinet,” continued Walker. The win adds to ADOR’s impressive record in the United Kingdom, but for the team it’s primarily a chance to hone their skills before they arrive in Alicante, Spain to begin the Volvo Ocean Race on October, 4th.While this has been a great race and a great result, our main focus will always be the Volvo Ocean Race, and our preparation will continue with that goal in mind,” said Walker.

SHUFFLING OF THE PACK ON THE CARDS IN ODI TEAM AND PLAYER RANKINGS AS THE TOP SIX RANKED SIDES CONTINUE ICC CRICKET WORLD CUP PREPARATIONS Amla, de Villiers and Kohli resume battle for the number-one batting position; Anderson has No.2 bowling spot in his sights By Qadeer Ahmad Siddiqui Dubai UAE: he next couple of weeks promise to p r o v i d e a continuation of exciting international cricket as the six top-ranked sides in the Reliance ICC ODI Team Rankings go head to head with one eye on next year’s ICC Cricket World Cup 2015, now just 175 days a w a y. O n S a t u r d a y, Hambantota will host the first of three matches between Sri Lanka and Pakistan, while in Harare on Monday, the tri-series between Australia, South Africa and Zimbabwe gets underway with the opening match between the host and Australia. Also on Monday, Bristol will stage the first ODI of the fivematch series between England and India. In the meantime, eighth-ranked West Indies is already involved in its series against ninth-ranked Bangladesh, and leads the three-match series 1-0. This series concludes on Monday. There is a lot to play for in the 17 matches scheduled over the next 16 days. Not only are the six top sides separated by just 15 ratings points, but the captains and the coaches will have their sights firmly set on the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015, which kicks off in Christchurch and Melbourne on 14 February.Furthermore, these matches will provide excellent opportunities to younger players to impress the selectors with their mettle and prowess, and strengthen their claims for places in sides for ICC’s pinnacle ODI event. There is further context to these matches as Pakistan and India will be hoping to avenge their defeat in their respective Test series. Sri Lanka won both its matches against Pakistan while England came from behind to wrap up the series against India 3-1. While doing so, both England and Sri Lanka moved ahead of their respective opponents in the Reliance ICC Test Te a m C h a m p i o n s h i p table. In Harare, Australia and South Africa will do battle for the number-one position in the Reliance ICC ODI Team Rankings, with Michael Clarke’s men sitting on top of the tree, and South Africa just three

T

ratings points behind. The two teams are also at loggerheads for the number-one position in the Reliance ICC Test Team Championship, with South Africa ahead by just one ratings point. There are battles within battles when the Reliance ICC ODI Player Rankingsare taken into account.South Africa captain Hashim Amla has regained the number-one batting spot from teammate AB de Villiers in the Reliance ICC Player Rankings for ODI Batsmen, following his scores of 122 not out and 15 against Zimbabwe. But his lead over de Villiers is just one ratings point, with India’s Virat Kohli another point behind in third spot. With three points separating the top three batsmen, any batsman producing strong performances in the forthcoming matches could finish on top of the table. If the trio fails and fourthranked George Bailey of Australia gets a few big scores, then the tide could potentially sway in favour of the former Australia U19 captain, who can surge to the top of the charts for the first time in his career. As many as nine batsmen inside the top 10 will feature in the forthcoming matches. Apart from Amla, India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq also feature inside the top 10 in sixth and ninth positions, respectively. England captain Alastair Cook is in 20th position and Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews is 22nd.In the ICC Players Rankings for ODI Bowlers, Pakistan’s Saeed Ajmal holds the number-one position. He leads West Indies’ Sunil Narine by 71 ratings points, with England’s James Anderson hoping to continue with his rich form with the ball and leapfrog the West Indies spinner, whom he trails by 12 ratings points. The Reliance ICC Player Rankings for ODI Allrounders is headed by Pakistan’s Mohammad Hafeez, with the top five also including Angelo Mathews in third place and Ravindra Jadeja of India in fourth. CISCO MIDYEAR SECURITY REPORT HIGHLIGHTS WEAK LINKS IN UAE’S INCREASINGLY DYNAMIC THREAT LANDSCAPE Across Wider Region, Geopolitical Events and Natural Disasters Expand Threat Landscape, with Agriculture and Mining as Most At-Risk Industry Vertical By Qadeer Ahmad Siddiqui Dubai UAE: i s c o h a s released its 2014 Midyear Security Report, which examines the “weak links” in organizations that contribute to the UAE’s increasingly dynamic threat landscape. In the Middle East, geopolitical events are creating new trends in the cyber realm, expanding the risk landscape for b u s i n e s s e s , governments, and other organizations and individuals.Due to recent drought, floods, and unrest affecting supplies and infrastructure across the wider Europe, Middle East, Africa, and Russia (EMEAR) region, the top five most at-risk industry verticals for mobile malware encounters during the first half of 2014 were agriculture a n d m i n i n g , transportation and shipping, food and b e v e r a g e , government, and media and publishing. In EMEAR, food and beverage saw the highest number of web m a l w a r e encounters. As a result, weak links outdated software, bad code, abandoned digital properties, or user errors contribute to the adversary’s ability to exploit vulnerabilities, with methods such as DNS queries, exploit kits, amplification attacks, point-of-sale (POS) s y s t e m compromise, malvertisi ng,ransomware, and infiltration of encryption protocols, social engineering and “life event” spam. The

C

report also shows that focusing on only highprofile vulnerabilities rather than on highimpact, common and stealthy threats put these organizations at greater risk. By proliferating attacks against low-profile legacy applications and infrastructure with known weaknesses, malicious actors are able to escape detection as security team’s focus instead o n b o l d f a c e vulnerabilities, such as Heartbleed. K e y Findings:Globally, researchers closely examined 16 large multinational organizations, which, as of 2013, collectively controlled over USD 4 trillion in assets with revenues in excess of USD 300 billion. This analysis yielded three compelling security insights tying enterprises to malicious traffic: Man-in-the-Browser” attacks pose a risk for enterprises: Nearly 94 percent of customer networks observed in 2014 have been identified as having traffic going to w ebsites that host malware. Botnet hide and seek: Nearly 70 percent of networks were identified as issuing DNS queries for Dynamic DNS Domains. This shows evidence of networks m i s u s e d o r compromised with botnets using DDNS to alter their IP address to a v o i d detection/blacklist. Encrypting stolen data: Nearly 44 percent of customer networks observed in 2014 have been

T

identified as issuing DNS requests for sites and domains with devices that provide encrypted channel services, used by malicious actors to cover their tracks by exfiltrating data using encrypted channels to avoid detection like VPN, SSH, SFTP, FTP, and FTPS. •The number of exploit kits has dropped by 87 percent since the alleged creator of the widely popular Blackhole exploit kit was arrested last year, according to Cisco security researchers. Several exploit kits observed in the first half of 2014 were trying to move in on territory once dominated by the Blackhole exploit kit, but a clear leader has yet to emerge. •Java continues its dubious distinction as the programming language most exploited by malicious actors. Cisco security researchers found that Java exploits rose to 93 percent of all indicators of compromise (IOCs) as of May 2014, following a high point of 91 percent of IOCs in November 2013 as reported in the Cisco 2014 Annual Security Report. •Unusual upticks in malware within vertical

markets. For the first half of 2014, worldwide the top three verticals most at risk for web malware encounters were media and p u b l i s h i n g , pharmaceutical and chemical, and aviation. Rabih Dabboussi, General Manager for the UAE, Cisco, said:Widespread broadband, cloud, and mobile device take-up is enabling the UAE to be a world leader in the innovation-based economy, but inevitably with this growth will also come the expanding the c y b e r t h r e a t landscape. As the region embraces the era of the Internet of Everything, UAE companies must realize that security is no longer the responsibility of IT professionals alone. Mobile operators, device manufacturers, software developers and businesses all have to take up a post in this war and be on high alert for potential c y b e r s p i l l o v e r, especially with mobile malware. In order to protect the ‘weak links’ in their networks, UAE businesses will need to adopt a businessoriented cyber security approach to cover the full attack continuum.

The Group is making efforts to complete the exit within the timelines set out in the order. If the exit is not achieved within this period, further restrictions will be required, unless an extension is granted by the DFS.These remediation measures will remain in place until the transaction s u r v e i l l a n c e s y s t e m ’s detection scenarios are operating to a standard approved by the monitor. The UAE remains one of Standard Chartered’s leading franchises globally and the move does not reflect a decreased focus on the country.
