SCHNEIDER ELECTRIC INTRODUCES UNIFIED SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT SOFTWARE SimSci Spiral Suite offers new cross-boundary workflows; creates instant collaboration across full hydrocarbon supply chain to unlock profitability By Qadeer Ahmad Siddiqui Dubai UAE: chneider Electric, the global specialist in energy management, is first to introduce a unified supply chain management solution for the hydrocarbon processing industry. Built on its ground-breaking Spiral Suite platform, the new offering closes the value gaps left by poorly integrated legacy tools.By improving collaboration across the refinery, Spiral Suite software helps traders, planners and schedulers make reliable decisions, manage risks and ultimately increase profitability.Spiral Suite promises to transform the refinery business environment from being a place where hundreds of people work in isolation not

S

seeing or understanding how their bits of individual work contribute to the wholeo a place where workers first see and understand how their decisions impact others and then cooperate to collectively unlock the maximum value of their economic forecasts, said R a v i Gopinath,Ph.D.,executive vice president,Schneider Electric Global Solutions, Software Business. The latest advances to our Spiral Suite toolset achieve, above and beyond, what many refiners and vendors have tried and failed to do with legacy solutions: It improves understanding and cooperation between traders, planners and schedulers and replaces several disjointed point solutions with a single, easy-to-use application. In short, it increases transparency and collaboration across different business groups, enabling our customers to make the best overall decisions for safety and profitability while taking better advantage of new opportunities presented by the market. It's a great example of the new, gamechanging technology Schneider Electric will continue to introduce to help our customers plan and manage their future.Spiral Suite users can contribute to and add value to one another's decision making without the risk of overwriting data or causing downstream processing issues at the plant. Combined with powerful, intuitive visualizations, everyone is able to view, understand and respond to incidents. All refinery activities are supported within a single, highly intuitive environment, and accurate, up-to-date information is available across the business. Planners can see future scheduling constraints; schedulers can assess their decisions against commercial impact and operational feasibility. Users from different disciplines and locations are now able to work together effectively to create the most flexible,

optimal plan for any set of circumstances, unlocking potential cost savings and margin improvements that could total millions of dollars each year. With Spiral Suite, even novice planners can be up and running within a week, rather than after a year of training it would normally take with heritage products, said Peter Reynolds, senior consultant with ARC Advisory Group. In an industry where challenges are coming from every direction, companies risk losing out if they continue to apply outdated work processes that rely on experts. In some cases, optimized production planning is only achieved through knowledge held by a small number of people and naturally collaborative working relationships. As

these experts retire, more companies are looking to invest in a sustainable solution that supports the younger, more mobile workforce. Spiral Suite offers exceptional ease-ofuse, meaning users can perform all the necessary analytics and backcasting to make profitable, riskadjusted feedstock purchasing and refinery planning decisions within weeks of licensing.Spiral Suite's SaaS deployment model, off-the-shelf integration and exceptional ease of use mean the application can be learned within days. Legacy point solutions can be replaced quickly and simply, without incurring the high cost of implementing or maintaining data transfer. Inadequate, unsupported integration bridges are removed, as is the need for application experts and extensive training courses, which lowers total cost of ownership.Data from inhouse and external systems can be made available automatically within workflows, and people from across the business can work in parallel to build the supply chain model within weeks, without needing to know matrix math. Spiral Suite takes advantage of the advanced features of modern processors, fully exploiting multi-core and cloud environments to generate results in seconds and then presenting them in a way everyone can understand. Users can explore the business and operational implications of millions of scenarios and receive real-time feedback on how their changes would impact the rest of the supply chain. Integral cargo tracking and assay management mean crude oil quality variations can be analyzed within minutes, rather than weeks, to swiftly assess their financial impact on the business, as well as any potential operational and reliability issues prior to purchase. The software also automatically reconciles all available data and performs backcasting to understand how and why there are deviations to the plan.

IMPLEMENTATION OF DRIVER ASSISTANCE SYSTEMS WILL MAKE GCC ROADS SAFER Research finds driver drowsiness detection most frequently installed technology in new cars Bosch expects to sell more than two million radar, video sensors in 2014 By Qadeer Ahmad Siddiqui Dubai UAE: river assistance systems can save lives on GCC roads. Sometimes it's enough for the car to sound a warning signal and display a coffee cup on the dashboard to remind a driver to take a break after a long stretch on the road.New research from Germany suggests that almost a quarter 680,000 of the 2.95 million new cars registered last year can do just that: warn a tired driver before he or she causes an accident.Driver drowsiness detection is the driver assistance function most frequently installed in new cars, according to a Bosch

way to 'vision zero', the goal of eradicating road fatalities. Bosch expects to sell over two million radar and video sensors in 2014, more than twice as many as last year, meaning that driver assistance systems are becoming more and more important.GCC drivers can also benefit from the support of lane assistants which

evaluation of important new features. Fatigue at the steering wheel is highly dangerous for the high number of drivers in the GCC who travel long distances to and from work every day,” said Andreas Bodemer, Vice President for Bosch Automotive Aftermarket, Middle East and Africa. The Bosch driver drowsiness detection system will constantly analyse the driver's steering behaviour to spot patterns typical of fatigue, as well as registering any abrupt, small steering motions. Nearly one in four new cars in Germany now has this technology, which we know will have a major impact here in the GCC too.Other new technology features which are increasingly installed include intelligent headlight control, found in 20 percent of all new cars, which automatically turns the low-beam headlight on or off as required, and automatic emergency braking, in 11 percent of all new cars, which helps to avoid or mitigate the consequences o f r e a r - e n d collisions.Bodemer added: “Driver assistance systems are an essential step on the

warn the driver with a vibration in the steering wheel when they unintentionally leave the lane or even when the car gets too close to the edge of the lane by gently, but firmly, steering the vehicle back into the lane. Road-sign recognition makes it easier for drivers to navigate the 'road-sign jungle' as video cameras read traffic signs and present relevant information as symbols in the dashboard, while the adaptive cruise control (ACC) works with a radar sensor and maintains a preset safety distance to the car ahead, even in heavy traffic. The Stop & Go feature automatically accelerates and brakes according to the flow of traffic and can even bring the car to a complete stop in a traffic jam. As one of the automotive industry's biggest suppliers, Bosch covers the entire product range of driver assistance systems. In developing the ABS and ESP systems, the company laid the foundation early on for traffic with fewer accidents. Powerful computers ensure that the assistance systems react rapidly and can think as well as a good driver can.

HIGH SUPPLIES, FADING DEMAND AND EBOLA FEARS HIT COMMODITIES Head of Commodity Strategy at Saxo Bank Ole Sloth Hansen By Qadeer Ahmad Siddiqui Dubai UAE: he broad-based BBG Commodity Index, which tracks the performance of 22 major commodities, reached a new five-year low before trading close to unchanged on the week. Performances across individual sectors are very mixed, with gains in energy and soft commodities offset by losses in industrial metals and grains. Stock market weakness, falling bond yields and the strong dollar (which continues to reach new heights) were some of the overall drivers, with geopolitical worries holding steady on the horizon. REFINERY SHUTDOWN SUPPORTING GASOLINE :Gasoline reached its highest levels since July as the fuel received a boost from reduced availability around the northeastern US (a region that includes New York, the delivery hub for

T

been supporting a contraction of the spread between the two benchmarks despite the continued rise in US shale oil production. An expected increase in pipeline infrastructure leading more oil into Cushing (the delivery hub for WTI crude oil), together with the seasonal maintenance-related slowdown in demand should help alleviate the currently tight market conditions here and help the spread stabilise. It remains difficult to see much upside for Brent crude, however, as long the spot market remains under pressure from slowing demand and increased supply. Investors looking to oil as an investment either through futures or exchange traded products currently prefer WTI crude due to the structure of the futures curve. The curve is presently in a relative deep backwardation of $0.80 USD per barrel compared with the backwardation of $0.64 USD per barrel currently seen in Brent crude. This basically means that the monthly futures roll of a long position favours WTI crude by more than $1.40 per barrel. Until we see a change in this relationship which could

continued to break higher against a host of currencies. Eventually, the yellow metal did manage to find some support from renewed riskoff sentiment, which drove equity market and bond yields lower. Reports that Iraq had received credible intelligence concerning planned Islamic State attacks on subway systems in Paris and the US also added some support to a market where short positions have been building rapidly in recent weeks. The current lack of appetite for gold is also reflected by in the total holdings in exchange traded

products backed by physical gold. Holdings there slumped to a new fiveyear low after seeing 41.6 tonnes of reduction during

within Switzerland.Gold's share of Swiss currency reserves has fallen from 30% in 2000 to 8% currently and if the referendum is

passed, the SNB would need to buy a substantial amount of gold over the next three years. So far, the Swiss parliament has

overwhelmingly rejected the initiative as it would curtail the SNB's ability to conduct monetary policy. In late November, however, Swiss voters get their say, and though this event has not yet received much attention outside Switzerland, it could quickly become a major story in the gold world. COCOA MARKET DRIVEN BY FEAR AS EBOLA SPREADS:Cocoa is another strong riser during the week as the market reacts to the fear of potential supply disruptions from Ivory Coast. Ebola continues to spread across West Africa and as it approaches the world’s largest cocoa production region in Ivory Coast and Ghana, worries of supply disruptions have increased.October is a critical month for the cocoa market as it signals the beginning of the harvest. Any transportation disruptions or labour shortages in the world’s two largest producers could have a significant positive impact on the price. As a result of these worries (and speculative buyers jumping in), the price reached a three-and-a-half year high with price action now being driven more by fear than fundamentals. The 2014/15 harvest result still looks very healthy and when you consider that the market is up by more than 10% over the past few weeks, one cannot rule out the risk of an equally brutal sell-off on the December futures contract if Ebola stays out of Ivory Coast. While this fear remains the key driver, however, the price could potentially revisit its 2011 record of $3733/tonne, which occurred when civil war in Ivory Coast caused real supply disruptions.

The conference will feature a two-day scientific program focusing o n s u s t a i n a b l e microtunelling, the techniques, latest developments and current and future challenges. It will also include an exhibition where local and international organizations can showcase the latest technologies, innovations, products and services for use in the underground space development for the transportation systems, e n e r g y, w a t e r, a n d telecommunications sectors. The Call for Abstracts is now open until the 15th October 2014. Abstracts for oral and poster presentations are being

B

project management companies, and will include observational, modelling and conceptual studies. His Excellency Engr. Essa Al Maidoor, President of the SOE-UAE, said: “Sustainable underground space utilization is where the future lies for the construction industry. We are delighted to host this important regional meeting, which emphasizes the growing scope and demand of expertise in the tunnelling industry across the region.Papers that are accepted by the conference will be subject to peer review and the selection criteria include relevance to the conference theme, accuracy and originality of ideas, significance of the contribution and quality of presentation. Last year, the conference welcomed 600 delegates from 50 countries, 150 students from national and

international engineering universities, with 70 research papers being presented and 30 companies exhibiting for best practices in tunnelling. The two-day event is the only event of its kind in the region, making it the essential meeting point for tunnelling professionals involved in the design, management and maintenance of today's tunnelling and underground infrastructure. The 2014 scientific committee consists of engineers from multidisciplinary professions, scientists and educators working in Road & Transport Authority, ADMA –OPCO, BASF The Chemical Company, Green Building Engineering Consultant, Command of Military Works, Gulf Rock Engineering Group, Sharjah Road & Transport Authority, American University in Dubai, Dubai Technology and Free Zone Authority, International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association (ITA) and Dubai Electricity & Water Authority (DEWA). Current Regional Projects:Tunnelling in the GCC region is fast developing and has great potential for further growth. Current projects in the UAE alone include the Abu Dhabi STEP (Strategic Tunnel Enhancement Program), Etihad Rail and the Abu Dhabi road tunnels and flyovers project (which involves three road tunnels and two flyovers improving

road access to Port Zayed). These along with on-going tunneling works in the emirate of Sharjah as well as the planned Abu Dhabi Metro create a perfect setting for a congregation of experts from around the globe, to improve upon the already high standards being set in the GCC.Looking further around the region, major projects include metro plans for Riyadh, Kuwait and Doha. The scale of these projects is vast. Kuwait alone is worth a reported USD 7 billion; the project aims to begin building a total of 160 km of metro rail in 2013. Arriyadh Development Authority (ADA) is heading the project to build a six-line driverless network which will eventually incorporate 96 stations and 177km in the Saudi capital. Furthermore, there are plans to build metro’s in Baghdad and extend the Cairo and Tehran m e t r o ’s . O t h e r n o n - r a i l Tunnelling projects include the Al-Hayer wastewater c o n v e r t e r, w h i c h w i l l encompass two 37 km wastewater tunnels in KSA and the inner Doha resewerage scheme. A number of different methods will be used to carry out the aforementioned projects including the use of TBM’s (Tunnel Boring Machines), cut and cover, drill and blast and immersed tubes. Plans are also going ahead for a 38.7km undersea rail link from Spain to Morocco.

future. The arrival of Solar Impulse 2, in Abu Dhabi, will act as a local and regional catalyst and leave a lasting legacy, inspiring Emirati youth to take an interest in aeronautics, science, clean technology and renewable e n e r g y. D u r i n g S o l a r Impulse 2’s stay, school visits and educational workshops will be held, during which students and others will be able to learn about the cutting-edge technologies designed to make the round-theworld flight possible. The choice of Abu Dhabi to host the start and end of the historymaking flight reinforces the Emirate’s status as a pioneer in solar energy innovation and as a global leader in the drive to develop and deploy effective clean energy solutions that meet the needs of people, while at the same time minimizing long-term effects on the planet. The relationship between Masdar and Solar Impulse, which started in 2003, stems from a shared perspective between the UAE leadership and the Solar Impulse founders, Bertrand Piccard and André Borschberg, to promote greater technological innovation as well as help encourage other nations and organizations to embrace cleaner and more efficient technologies. This well-matched partnership will showcase Abu Dhabi as a centre of expertise when it comes to renewable energy and at the same time Solar Impulse will demonstrate the far-reaching applications of

clean energy during the first solar-powered flight around the world,” declared Bertrand Piccard. André Borschberg continued:We have chosen this location as being the best and most suitable departure and return point for the roundthe-world tour, due to its climate, infrastructure and commitment to clean technologies. The round-theworld tour is expected to take 25 flying days over 4 or 5 months. S o l a r Impulse is currently finalizing the stages after Abu Dhabi, and looks to m a k e stopovers in Asia, the United States a n d i n Southern Europe or North Africa, before returning to Abu Dhabi in July 2015. Some flights over the Pacific and the Atlantic will last 5 to 6 days, a feat made possible by Solar Impulse 2’s ability to fly without fuel.On its circumnavigation of the globe, Swiss pilots and cofounders of the project, Dr. Bertrand Piccard and Andre Borschberg, will take turns flying the aircraft, which completed its first test flight in June. They’ll have six oxygen bottles, a parachute, a life raft, and food and water for a week.Solar Impulse 2 made its maiden flight on June 2. Since then it has completed 11 successful test flights. The plane’s predecessor, Solar Impulse 1, became the first solar airplane ever to fly through the night. The plane undertook successful solarpowered flights from Switzerland to Spain and

Morocco as its first intercontinental flight, and conducted a multi-stage flight across the USA in 2013. Solar Impulse 1 is credited with eight Fédération Aéronautique Internationale world records, including absolute height: 9235 m (30300 ft); duration: 26 hours, 10 minutes, 19 seconds and free distance: 1 5 0 6 . 5 k m ( 9 3 6 miles).Piccard and Borschberg founded the Solar Impulse project in November 2003 after undertaking a feasibility study in partnership with the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne. By 2009, they had assembled a multi-disciplinary team of 80 specialists from different countries, assisted by about 100 outside advisers. The project is financed by a number of partner c o m p a n i e s a n d individuals.Solar Impulse 2 has been built for the roundthe-world flight. It has a wider wingspan, more efficient engines, an improved single person cabin, and is made from lighter materials than its predecessor. The aircraft's wings are 72 metres wide, larger than those on a Boeing 747, and have been fitted with more than 17,000 solar cells that convert sunlight into electricity to power its four engines. Consequently, the whole aeroplane weighs just 2,300 kg, about the same as a family car.Solar Impulse 2 will be delivered to Abu Dhabi from the Payerne aerodrome in Switzerland towards the end of the year and will be showcased during the World Future Energy Summit as part of the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week, which is hosted by Masdar between 17 and 22 January 2015.

THE FIRST ARCHIVES IN THE WORLD TO ADOPT THIS INITIATIVE THE NATIONAL ARCHIVES OPENS ITS CORNER IN KIDZANIA DUBAI AT THE END OF THIS YEAR By Qadeer Ahmad Siddiqui Dubai UAE: he National Archives of the United Arab Emirates signed with the children's world city of e d u c a t i o n a n d entertainment “KidZania Dubai” an agreement to allocate a corner to the National Archives in KidZania. This corner will open at the end of this year, thus the National Archives of the UAE's will be the first archives in the world to have a branch in KidZania. The Corner of the National Archives in KidZania will inform the children about important aspects in the history of the United Arab Emirates in a manner that combines the practical and the theoretical aspects together in order to promote national values in them. The corner’s identity will be derived from UAE heritage; it will resemble the majestic fort “Qasr al Hosn”, in which the National Archives was established in 1968 following the directives of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. The National Archives by its participation in KidZania aims to strengthen national identity, and to acquaint the children and their parents with its tasks and activities, and to

T

create a solid interactive experience for them, and to enrich and support the curriculum of national education. About the

importance of the corner of the National Archives in KidZania, His Excellency Dr. Abdullah Al-Reyes, Director General of the National Archives said: “As the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Presidential Affairs and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the National Archives urge to inform the new generation about UAE civilization, culture and heritage and its greatest leaders, to deepen the feeling of national identity, to promote loyalty to homeland and to prepare the good citizens capable of giving generously - we in the National Archives spare no efforts in fulfilling this national mission, and as “KidZania Dubai” city is

considered a meeting place of hundreds of thousands of school students in the UAE and from the Gulf therefore we find in it a suitable arena

for promoting identity and allegiance among the children, and at the same time we can deliver the message of the National Archives about our deepr o o t e d h i s t o r y, a n d prosperous present in its finest output to children coming from abroad. This will strengthen the position of the National Archives as a partner in national education of generations; so the supervision of the corner will be entrusted to competent personnel in the fields of archiving and education in order to be able to attract children visiting the corner, and to let them achieve greater benefit and fun. It is noteworthy that the National Archives strives to promote awareness among

the children by opening the field of employment for the children visiting the corner in many of the specialized archiving professions notably: an Archivist, in which the child will sort, classify and scan scattered paper documents in order to preserve them in special archiving programs, a Document Restorer, in which the child will know about the restoration of documents and their importance and value, and the need to save them from wear and tear by the help of special electronic restoration programs, an Oral Historian, in which the child will know how to record history by carrying out direct interviews, or by listening to training recordings, and by writing down answers related to t h e t r a i n i n g recordings.Visiting children will be trying specialized clothing and tools for restoration. After signing the agreement, His Excellency Mr. Andrew Hearn General Manger of Kidzania accompanied his Excellency Dr. Abdulla AlReyes general manger of the national archives in a tour through Kidzania and its facilities, where he gave a detailed explanation about what it offers.

BIG TOTALS AND BIG WINS ARE THE ORDER OF THE DAY IN THE SUMMER INDOOR TOURNAMENT AT THE ICC ACADEMY AT DUBAI SPORTS CITY Defending champion Danube Lions already through to the quarter-finals; two-time champion Pacific Ventures looks in ominous form; victories, too, for SFS, Leo Shipping and Old Monks Total of 31 matches between 16 sides with AED5000 prize pool, all taking place at the state-of-theart indoor facility at Dubai Sports City ICC Academy Head Coach Mudassar Nazar: The standard of play among the top sides in this tournament has been exceptional and as we move towards the knock-out stages we can be certain the quality will increase still further ICC Academy Manager Will Kitchen: With some of the leading indoor cricket sides in the UAE in action we always expected we were going to get high-class action and that is exactly what has happened Dubai Sports City General Manager Sports Business Maqbul Dudhia: “The ICC Academy is showing its versatility as a fantastic venue for all levels of cricket. It is catering for everyone from recreational cricketers to the world's best players and that is one reason it and Dubai Sports City is going from strength to strength” hammered an amazing 132 against Darjeeling Cricket Club in the Pool C e n c o u n t e r. I t w a s t h e highest team score of this year's event and helped Pacific Ventures to a massive 151-run success as its players restricted Darjeeling to a score of minus 19 runs in r e p l y. M a t c h e s i n t h e S u m m e r I n d o o r Tournament are eight-aside with each innings lasting 12 overs. Players bat in pairs, each for three overs, and a team loses five runs every time a wicket falls.A total of 16 line-ups have been divided into four pools, each of four teams, with the top two sides in each going through to the quarter-finals, followed by semi-finals and the Grand Final on Thursday 16 October. Pacific Ventures' star performer in the match against Darjeeling was player of the match Nadir, who made a brilliant 36 and then followed that with the remarkable bowling figures of five wickets for minus 19 runs.Leo Shipping also topped three figures in its Pool B match against the Bank of Baroda.Batting first, the moneymen lost seven wickets in the first three overs at the crease, stumbling to minus 27 runs in that period, and there was little way back from that position. The Bank of Baroda eventually reached a final total of five but then Leo Shipping took the long handle to the bowling and reached 116 for a 111-run win. Leo's Farhan was player of the match as he top-scored for his side with 29.Pacific Ventures also played Maimoon Cricket Club in the latest round of action and won that match by 45 runs. Maimoon batted first and scored 38 and that represented a recovery of sorts after standing at just six runs at the halfway stage of the innings.Still, it was nowhere near enough runs to test Pacific Ventures, which finished with 83 as player of the match Asif followed up a spell with the ball that yielded two wickets for minus two runs by making 20 when his turn came to bat.In Pool D SFS beat Transmed by 110 runs thanks to a comprehensive a l l - r o u n d display.Transmed, batting first, was restricted to minus 19 runs, losing 16 wickets in total, and SFS rubbed salt in the wound by responding with 91.Sameer Nayak was the player of the match for the winning side after scoring 20 having earlier taken four wickets for minus 15 runs.Defending champion side the Danube

success against the Old Monks. The Monks side lost 19 wickets when it batted and ended with a score of minus 53, squeezed to death by brilliant outcricket.A score like that suggested the Monks did not have a prayer and that was exactly as it turned out as the Lions replied with 85, losing just one wicket in the process. Rumesh was player of the match for Danube with 18 runs his side's top score – and bowling figures of three wickets for minus 11 runs. The Old Monks did, however, secure a win in the other match played in the latest round of games, beating Creative Minds by 33 runs.Creative Minds looked well on course for a comfortable win when, after restricting the Monks to 59, it reached 39 at the halfway stage of its reply. But a disastrous collapse saw nine wickets tumble in the final six overs and meant Creative Minds finished on 26. Asif of Old Monks ended up as player of the match with bowling figures of three wickets for minus six runs. The latest results means the Danube Lions side is already through to the quarter-finals in Pool A and it will be between the Old Monks and Creative Minds for the second spot in the last eight. Old Monks will seal that place if it can beat Al Taaraf Cricket Club.In Pool B, Leo Shipping is top with two wins from two matches but the seeded team in that pool, DBMSC, is yet to start its campaign.Pacific Ventures has dominated Pool C so far but Crystal Gallery, Maimoon and Darjeeling will all still believe they can finish second to book a spot in the last eight. And in Pool D there has been just one match so far, that encounter between Transmed and SFS, with Oxford Marine and the Titans yet to start their searches for success. The prize fund for the Summer Indoor Tournament is a total of AED5000 so there is every incentive for sides to progress all the way to lift the trophy supplied by Crystal Gallery.Reflecting on the latest matches, ICC Academy Head of Development Mudassar Nazar, the former Pakistan all-rounder, said:There has been some mightily impressive batting in this S u m m e r I n d o o r Tournament. For sides to top three figures shows the players have excellent allround games and the bowling has also been hugely impressive too. There is no doubt the

has been exceptional and as we move towards the knock-out stages, with those leading sides coming up against each other and everything riding on one match, we can be certain the quality will increase still f u r t h e r. I C C A c a d e m y Manager Will Kitchen added:With some of the leading indoor cricket sides in the UAE in action we always expected we were going to get high-class action and that is exactly what is happening. The players are relishing the opportunity to play using the world-class facilities that are also used by some of the greats of the modern game. The ICC Academy is unquestionably the premier indoor cricket venue in the UAE with its large playing area and superb atmosphere that is created when the lights are on.In this form of the game every ball counts and as we move through the event that will undoubtedly prove to be the case time and again.Mr Kitchen added that the S u m m e r I n d o o r Tournament is just the latest action at the ICC Academy in a year that has already seen the facility used by top-class players and recreational cricketers alike. We are getting ready to host Pakistan and Australia's players over the next couple of weeks and that is following on from the past 12 months which saw the Pakistan, South Africa and Sri Lanka squads all take advantage of our world-class indoor and outdoor facilities, he said.On top of that we staged matches in the ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier and the ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup, hosted Pepsi Indian Premier League squads and the Pakistan England Physical Disability series, delivered numerous indoor events and continued with our hugely successful junior coaching schemes which have just restarted after a summer break. And over the next few months, on top of the arrival of Pakistan and Australia, we will welcome the New Zealand squad to train here, as well as the Afghanistan, Ireland and Scotland teams, who will be taking part in an ICC High Performance Programme Camp as they all get ready for the ICC Cricket World Cup.These are exciting and busy times here at the ICC Academy. ICC MATCH OFFICIALS' WORKSHOP CONCLUDES IN DUBAI Geoff Allardice: There was a wealth of knowledge and experience in the room, and it was pleasing to see the excellent teamwork displayed during the three days Ranjan Madugalle: It's a good starting point and we are going to use this as a launching pad over the next few months to be ready when the CWC comes along By Qadeer Ahmad Siddiqui Dubai UAE:

T

he three-day Emirates Elite Panel of ICC Umpires and Match Referees' workshop concluded in Dubai on Wednesday. All 12 members of the Emirates Elite Panel of ICC Umpires and seven Emirates Elite Panel of ICC Match Referees, as well as three members of the Emirates International Panel of ICC Umpires and four umpire coaches attended the annual seminar. The workshop covered a wide range of topics as the match officials geared up for the forthcoming international season, which culminates with the ICC Cricket World Cup (CWC) 2015.Amongst the topics that were discussed included player behaviour, Decision Review System (DRS) and TV umpire training, illegal bowling actions, playing conditions and CWC 2015 planning. The workshop was overseen by ICC's Umpire Performance and Training Manager Simon Taufel. During these sessions, the match officials also exchanged information and shared their experiences from the previous

season.Speaking after the workshop, ICC General Manager Cricket Geoff Allardice said:We don't get many opportunities to get all of our match officials together in the one place, so we use the forum to cover a lot of the topical issues in international cricket. There was a wealth of knowledge and experience in the room, and it was pleasing to see the excellent teamwork displayed during the three days. This can only assist the ICC in sending a stronger and more consistent team of umpires and referees to international matches.ICC Chief Match Referee Ranjan Madugalle said: “Workshops are always very interesting. It is where we meet and share our experiences with colleagues who we haven't met for the whole year. Some of them we haven't ever met so it is an occasion to share our lives and our thoughts with them. But this is about cricket and preparation for the ICC CWC. That's our priority and this is where we get together and talk about things – the problems, the areas we need to focus on so that we are all working on levels of consistency to achieve professional standards to the best of our

abilities. That is not done during a match, it is done in the preparation stage here. So it's a good starting point and we are going to use this as a launching pad over the next few months to be ready when the CWC comes along.ICC's Umpire Performance and Training Manager Simon Taufel said: “We are keen to always explore opportunities where we can get better at what we do, and we're looking for the guys to show leadership and keep raising standards. It was a holistic session and with DRS being used in CWC 2015 it was an important start to our preparations here in September and moving forward because we're going to be in the third most watched sporting event in the world. We need to deliver and be a successful 15th team in that competition.Rod Tucker of the Emirates Elite Panel of ICC Umpires said: One of the massive benefits that we get out of these conferences and seminars is that we get together to discuss what has gone on in the past and plan for the future. op UAE experts stress that proper training is crucial to successfully complete the Red Bull Sultan of the Desert event, the most challenging multi discipline race in the UAE set to be held on October 10 in Al Ain.Comprising of the three

main disciplines of running, mountain biking and kayaking, the race will put to test the body and mind of participants, where endurance and individual skills will be the name of the game.Due to the nature of the terrain and the expected weather at the time of the event, proper preparation plays a very important role in determining the Sultan of the Desert title holder.Australian fitness instructor and Dubai Fitness Competition winner, Eva Clark, says it is highly recommended to practice on surfaces similar to that of the race terrain itself. This competition is all about the right techniques, so it is crucial to acquire some experience before hitting the race grounds. You need to get used to the rough surfaces and the weather as well, especially that you'll be running under the summer sun on a 15 km off-road track, which forces your body to consume more energy. So you need to get out and not limit your practice to the treadmill”, she said. The same advise is echoed by Andy Whitaker, a

the race, but well aware of the 15 km mountainous track with proper in advance training that would help you cross the end line. The event's last section is Kayaking, and participants will be provided with kayaks for free to use in Al Ain's scenic Al Mubazzarah lake and Wadi Adventure's notorious whitewater channels that have become a favorite winter training spot for world class athletes from around the world.Sultan of the Desert is considered the Middle East's toughest endurance race, requiring high strength, stamina and focus. It is held close to the UAE's oasis city of Al Ain which is well known for it is terrain and for hosting endurance events and challenging athletes with natural obstacles.

Ivan Horsky was second by virtue of a win and two third places in his heats, ahead of third placed

The pair fought it out at the front with Umid Ali snatching the lead during the course of their battle, but Zian retaliated in the closing laps to take victory by 0.337 of a second.Behind the leading pair was Emran Ikhlaq who impressed with his pace and consistency, managing to edge away from the pack to claim his first podium finish at Dubai Kartdrome. MEET THE 'G8' GM AT THE AJMAN PALACE HOTEL MANAGED BY HMH - HOSPITALITY MANAGEMENT HOLDINGS By Qadeer Ahmad Siddiqui Dubai UAE: ew general managers in the world can claim t o h a v e t h e experience that Ferghal Purcell brings to The Ajman Palace Hotel. He is the man who hosted the world's most powerful leaders in 2013 at the G8 Summit at Lough Erne Resort in Northern Ireland - the first ever in the region's history, and the 'best ever' in the words of British Prime Minister David Cameron.Ferghal took over as the General Manager of The Ajman Palace Hotel less than six months ago

F

and has since infused the 5star property, managed by HMH - Hospitality Management Holdings, with an incredible passion. His warmth and enthusiasm is etched on every face that comes forward to greet guests at the hotel. Once again he has taken up an extraordinary challenge: this time to be a market leader in a destination that is just emerging on the tourism map and is witnessing an u n p r e c e d e n t e d development of hotels that is putting an enormous pressure on the supply and demand chain. Yet despite the growing number of luxury hotels in the emirate,

he is determined to establish The Ajman Palace Hotel as the first choice among travellers.Confident of achieving it, Ferghal stated,

The Ajman Palace Hotel is one of the top properties in Ajman and certainly the UAE. With my diverse global experience and my ability to get the best of those who work with me, I am confident of taking The Ajman Palace Hotel to where it deserves to be. The fact that so many of the world's leading brands are present in Ajman will only strengthen it as a destination. We all need to lend our support and experience to drive visitor numbers into the emirate, and work more closely with A j m a n To u r i s m Development Department to promote it. Plans for the international airport combined with new properties, infrastructure and attractions such as the golf course in Al Zohra will boost tourism in Ajman positioning it as a soughtafter destination in the years ahead. There is sufficient business out there across the different segments to sustain existing and upcoming hotels but we would have to work very hard for it as we are competing with top

ROCKWELL AUTOMATION CEO AT INTERNET OF THINGS WORLD FORUM TO ADDRESS HOW THE CONNECTED ENTERPRISE IMPROVES INDUSTRIAL PERFORMANCE By Qadeer Ahmad Siddiqui Dubai UAE: eith D. This annual event coalesces leading innovators and early adopters from business, government and academia to accelerate market adoption of the Internet of Things (IoT).Nosbusch will explain how manufacturers are creating The Connected Enterprise, built on standard Internet Protocol-based networks. He will discuss current customer applications, as well as Rockwell Automation’s own journey with The Connected Enterprise, highlighting productivity and competitive gains realized from these efforts. The benefits include faster time to market, lower total cost of ownership, improved asset utilization, and enterprise risk management from a safer, more secure operating environment.Today we see an inrush of technology that’s changing the landscape, from labor intensity to highly productive production processes; from older industrial-age plants to clean, safe, efficient production facilities; from isolated operations to an integrated, responsive supply chain, said Nosbusch. The Connected

destinations. As a feeder market GCC holds strong potential for us that we still haven't fully tapped but would definitely be targeting in the coming months.Ferghal further added, I see The Ajman Palace Hotel as a unique brand where our a b s o l u t e signature is the warmth of our welcome and the l e v e l o f friendliness and service. It is part o f e v e r y experience at the property in a family-friendly, alcohol-free, s a f e environment. I am an Irish hotelier and that is what I do best. And it is no surprise to see this mammoth 'will to succeed' knowing where he is coming from. No event of the magnitude of the G8 Summit had ever been held in Northern Ireland before 2013 and leading the team who made it a true success was none other than Ferghal Purcell. In attendance were US President Barack Obama, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, British Prime Minister David Cameron, French President Francois Hollande, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Italian Prime Minister Enrico Letta as well as the likes of IMF leader Christine Lagarde. What is

unbelievable is six months prior to hosting G8 Summit, a major fire at Lough Erne Resort gutted its 25 best rooms, spa, library and gym. And the fire took place merely a day before British Prime Minister David Cameron was due to arrive to inspect the property to decide if it could play host to the summit.Ferghal recalled,We were stunned to receive him on such short notice at such a time for such a critical decision and there is nothing we could do to change it. We had absolutely no hope of making it. Prime Minister

Cameron saw the very worst of the damage when I showed him around the hotel that day. And at that moment he said to me, 'Ferghal don't worry. I can see beyond the fire.'Later as the British Prime Minister set down in a private room to discuss the matter with his people, he said, 'It is just like Camp David, only better.' And with it the G8 was confirmed for Lough Erne Resort. Will I ever do an event like it again? I doubt it, but what I learnt from the experience, enriched me both as a person and a hotelier. And that is the kind of passion I bring to The Ajman Palace Hotel.

INDIAN-PAKISTANI NATIONAL RIVALRY TAKES UNEXPECTED TURN WITH RED BULL SOUNDCLASH Bands announced: Pakistan’s Strings and India’s Euphoria lock horns in a celebration of music By Qadeer Ahmad Siddiqui Dubai UAE: he age-old rivalry between India and Pakistan has played out on many different platforms; diplomatic, sporting, and even culinary. On November 28th, Dubai’s Indian and Pakistani expat population will witness this rivalry play out live on a completely new stage. Actually, two stages.Red Bull Soundclash, the unique musical confrontation concept, will pit two of Asia’s greatest bands multi-awardwinning Pakistani pop-rock band Strings and veteran Indian rockers Euphoria against each other to compete for the affection of the crowd. Strings and Euphoria have collaborated before in the year 2000 on the track “Jeet lo Dil”, which translates to Winning the Heart”. While both bands are looking forward to the event’s competitive element, they are keen to stress that when it comes to music everybody’s on the same side, as Dr. Palash Sen, frontman of Euphoria (and, yes, an actual doctor) puts it.I see this as a concert for peace and unity,Sen says.If musicians can get together in the same arena and play together, why can’t people from both countries do the same? We’re living in an era where we have to forget about petty differences; that’s the only way the world will survive. That’s a sentiment echoed by Strings vocalist Faisal Kapadia. “I know Red Bull Soundclash is about competing, but honestly, we have a very friendly relationship with Euphoria,” he says on the phone from Karachi. We’ve performed so many times together. There is no animosity, but we really just want to have a unique experience with the people who are going to be at Red Bull Soundclash.Still, as Sen concedes with a laugh, When it comes to India and Pakistan, there’s always a competitive

T

edge.T he two bands will set up on opposi n g stages a t either end of the arena and execute a genre-twisting, boundary-pushing musical conversation. Their aim? To garner the loudest response from the audience over a series of rounds that will test their musical abilities to the limit.First up is The Cover” round, where each group will play a rendition of the same cover song in their own individual style. In The Takeover” round, each band will perform two songs. The catch is that the songs are cut halfway through, at which point the other band immediately takes over the track, putting their own spin on it.The aptly-named “The Clash” round will see each band perform three original songs in completely different genres, something neither band has done before. Finally, in the fourth and last Wild Card” round, each band will perform with a special guest artist, whose name will be kept a closely guarded secret until they appear onstage. As the performers themselves point out, this will be a truly unique event.Red Bull Soundclash is a fantastic concept, says Sen.First of all, to be playing for a new audience, second to be working with a brand like Red Bull, and third to be playing with your friends and performing one of their songs. While much of the event will remain a secret until the night, Sen is certain of one thing. “It’s going to be a great show,he says.I can tell you that for sure.Tickets for this once-in-a-lifetime performance featuring two of the most successful Asian bands of all time are available at Virgin Tickets, Timeout Tickets and Hard Rock Café.
