From Rabbi Lerner Finding Light in the Darkness As I am sitting here, staring out at the darkness of a cold November night, I am enveloped in emotions: Grief. Despair. Hopelessness. Fear. There are many terrible things happening right now to the Jewish people; I fear that by the time you read this, things may not have improved, but may have even gotten worse.

GLATZER WEEKEND DECEMBER 1-3 See page 3 for schedule and details.

It’s hard to sit with such sadness. I am so devastated by the horrors and inhumanity that 1,200 of our people who were murdered experienced. And, as of today, who knows what is happening to the 240 hostages... The ongoing tragedy of a broader war continues as Israel is under fire from the north, northeast, and south. Innocent Gazans are being killed, and so many have been wounded on both sides of the border. Further, for us who have a deep, often personal connection to Jewish history, we are thrust back in time almost 100 years, and it feels as though like the evil of the Shoah, the Holocaust, is unfolding in real time on CNN. As I walk the dog, I see people totally unaware of what I and our people are experiencing. There is just the beauty of the autumn leaves and a a non-committal smile. (continued on page 14)

What can be our response to terror? I write this just two and a half weeks after the sadistic terror attack of October 7, 2023 in Israel, a day on which cold calculated evil unleashed its bloody head for the world to see. Unfortunately, it has set off a chain reaction where suddenly we can see with open clarity who our friends are, and who our enemies are, both in the United States and abroad. I would be lying if I didn’t admit my feelings of rage and fury with the terrorists who will not be named. I would like to suggest three productive responses that we can take. The first approach, monetary support for Israel and American Jewish organizations working with Israeli organizations, is to meet the immediate needs of Israel and to support the economy. The second approach, monetary support for and engagement with education on the topic of Israel, is to ensure that we and our children are given the full story, given the opportunity and skill of asking questions, and given the background we need to effectively argue against antisemitism. And the third approach, performing consistent acts of kindness to our friends and family who we encounter in our daily lives, is something that we need to do in order to exemplify and bring goodness back into the world. Make no mistake that we should be resolute in doing whatever is in our power to prevent terror to rise up again. As president of Temple Emunah, my portfolio and responsibility is to keep our community strong by empowering members and staff to work productively in partnership. And the best way for this to happen is to encourage consistent practice of kindness. Kindness, compassion, forgiveness, and patience. Especially within our congregation, as we work in partnership with our staff, we need to remember to continue to bring out the best in ourselves, to help bring each other out of the dark depths of mourning, despair, rage and hopelessness. We are now a people in mourning, and at this writing, I am not sure when the mourning will end. As we enter the winter months, I hope you will join me by making a commitment to bring extra measures of kindness into our daily practice. Reach out to your friends in Israel and in the US. Let us all commit ourselves to bringing light into the world with the warm flames that kindness can bring. Let us be compassionate, patient, and forgiving of one another and let the acts of lovingkindness be how we pray for goodness, life and peace to prevail in this world. Wishing us all protection and kindness,

Adult Education/ Kaddish Memory Circle Last week was Rosh H.odesh Kislev and H.anukkah is not far behind. Let us hope that in this dark time, light, song and the memory of miracles may bring us hope and lift our spirits. All of our regular programs are going strong, including meditation on Tuesday mornings at 8:30 am, with Rabbi Lerner (rabbiadmin@templeemunah.org) and Barbara Neustadt (barbneus7@gmail.com); Perek Yomi, which reads and discusses the Bible (for dates contact Larry Marin at lbmlbm@ aol.com); Talmud Study with Dr. Isaac Ely Stillman (contact Louis Stuhl at lstuhl@verizon.net); and Ivrit LaKol has several classes at different levels (contact Nancy Lefkowitz at IvritlaKolHebrew@gmail.com). Emunat haLev Meditation Institute We offer two weekly opportunities to meditate with our Emunah community. No meditation experience is needed! The Tuesday morning meditation group meets on Zoom from 8:30-9:20 am. The Zoom link can be found in the Emunah calendar or in the weekly Emunah Happenings email. The format of our meditation includes a guided meditation by Barbara Neustadt, sitting in silence, a niggun sung by Cantor Louise Treitman, and a teaching by Rabbi Lerner. There is also time for people to share their experiences. Shabbat Musaf meditation is held every Shabbat in person after the Rabbi’s D’var Torah. We meet in either the Pious Chapel or the Katz Meeting Room. During these very difficult times, it has been a comfort to meditate with our community. All are welcome regardless of meditation experience. Please contact Barbara Neustadt at barbneus7@gmail.com if you would like more information or have questions. Barbara Neustadt

Preschool Our school year got off to a wonderful start and the children and staff have settled in well to new routines. New staff members, new families, and a new Director have all found their way at Billy Dalwin and the learning, development, and fun has been apparent. Walking into the school, the physical appearance of the classrooms and shared spaces looks fresh, natural, and inviting. But more than a coat of paint and some new materials, the feel of the school is special and warm. With a focus on being outdoors as much as possible and devoting much of our Friday programming to Shabbat, the children are learning the connections between nature, the environment, and Judaism. Our Teva area is such a gift for the children as its natural beauty allows for exploration large and small. From identifying each tree, to climbing on big rocks, to finding slugs, caterpillars, spiders, and salamanders, the children create their own adventures. We have added a table with benches, gardening supplies, kitchen implements, bird houses, a Mason bee hive, water receptacles, bamboo ramps, among other items. Making mud pies and other delicacies, creating ramps for balancing, finding meaningful quietness under a tree, tending to the land, and identifying natural habitats for animal life, the children are questioning, creating, testing hypotheses, quieting their minds, and breathing so much fresh air on a daily basis. Having storytime and lunch outside has become the norm! Inside the classrooms, there is plain wooden furniture and simple toys. The less intricate the toys, the greater the children use their imagination to create stories in their play. When it is time to create art, the goal is always about the process and not the final product. Simply interacting with a varied array of art mediums is the where the growth takes place. And getting super messy with paint, glue, markers, and glitter is always a good time, no matter what we are making. On Fridays, the joys of welcoming in Shabbat starts with the wafting aroma of challah baking. We have purchased a small oven that lives safely in the office and when the h.allah is baking, the school fills with goodness! Thank you to Gina for making the most delicious challah that we bless during Shabbat Sing and then enjoy in our classrooms. There is never a single crumb left behind. Coming together as a community for Shabbat Sing is the cornerstone of our week. We encourage parents to attend when possible to take place in the ruah. and festivity. From songs to blessings, the joy on the children’s faces is beautiful and meaningful! Gina Tzizik, Director gtzizik@templeemunah.org

Family Table Food Insecurity Has Not Disappeared Despite the fact that the pandemic is more than three years ago hunger remains a significant issue all across Massachusetts as many people continue to cope with inflation and a loss of the benefits that they had during the pandemic. According to Project Bread: Prior to the pandemic, household food insecurity in Massachusetts was at 8.2%. The coronavirus pandemic fueled a hunger crisis unlike any other in our lifetime, at its peak rendering 19.6% of households food insecure. In Massachusetts, recent data show that food insecurity rates have been inching closer to the high we saw at the onset of the pandemic. Approximately, 18.4% of all households in MA reported food insecurity in August 2023. Food insecurity among households with children in Massachusetts is also trending upwards from the low we saw in April 2021 when families were receiving a whole host of federal and state level benefits. Recently, an estimated 20.7% of households with children are facing food insecurity. The rising costs of housing and other basic needs, like food, are factors that can likely be attributed to the rising rates of food insecurity. Family Table provides regular access to nutritious food and emergency groceries to families in crisis. In September Family Table provided food to 624 households, including 612 regular monthly clients and 12 households who were in emergency need of food.

Family Table North Shore continues to see increased demand from people who are struggling to feed their families. More than 100 households are being services on the North Shore, requiring that a new commercial refrigerator be installed at the pantry at Temple Sinai in Marblehead. As a result fresh produce will be able to be given to more families in the future. Family Table participated in the 12th annual Ride for Food, a cycling fundraiser that benefits more than 20 food assistance organizations in the Greater Boston area. The Waltham team of 40 people cycled or walked and raised more than $76,000. Every dollar raised helps to provide food for more than 570 households each month. Hopefully you contributed to this worthwhile project. We encourage all at Temple Emunah to: 1. Donate to Family Table on the temple’s website so that bulk purchases can be made. 2. Purchase food items through Family Table’s Amazon Wish List at https://bit.ly/3FUOn7Z. Items will be sent directly to JF&CS for Family Table. Thank you for your ongoing support of Family Table. Sisterhood I like to begin in telling you that I have been struggling on what to say in this bulletin article with everything in the world that is going on, and my thoughts turn in many directions. I’d like to begin by thanking Rabbi Lerner, Rabbi Kling Perkins and the Temple Emunah community for the support you gave Dave and myself with the passing of Dave’s sister Robin on Rosh Hashanah. I spoke at Robin’s funeral and closed with my favorite reading from the A Minyan of Comfort book (the book we use shiva minyanim donated by Sisterhood), entitled The Crown of a Good Name. Every line of this reading appeals to me, and my favorite are “The hand of time does not erase them. The kindness they have shown, the love they have given, Remain in everlasting remembrance.” May Robin’s memory always be for a blessing. Sisterhood began its 2023/24 year with our membership supper on October 5. Fifty members gathered in the Sukkah for our Soup in the Sukkah dinner and then a zoom presentation over dessert by “Noshing With The Word Mavens.” Everyone seemed to have a wonderful time engaging in conversation during dessert and everyone enjoyed the amusing anecdotes and informative talk of the program. Many thanks to all those who helped make the program a success! Now here’s where I’m having trouble. Two days after our program, the world changed dramatically for all of us, and our love for Israel. By Tuesday evening (October 10), I volunteered to lead a collection drive of items needed in Israel with the assistance of Adam Samansky. In a short 48 hours we

had donations of the needed supplies which filled 28 duffels bags. The plan was for these items to be shipped out on the ELAL flight Thursday evening. Unfortunately, there was no room for our bags and subsequent flights could not carry the bags. We are working with various agencies to get the items to the right place in Israel, and they will soon be going in a container shipment. Over the past three weeks we have all been processing the issues going on and we will so for a long time. Our community is strong and we will support our beloved Israel in every possible way for which we can. Am Yisrael H.ai for a united Jewish people living together in safety, security and with unity and harmony. Sisterhood has an array of calendar events planned. Our next event will be a H.anukkah Crock Pot dinner event on Tuesday, December 5 at 6 pm and then our signature Dinner and a Movie event on Sunday, February 4. Details of these events will be announced later. Finally, each year Sisterhood honors an outstanding individual who has helped Sisterhood and our temple in so many ways as our “Light of Torah”. This year I am pleased to announce that Annette Koren will be our Light of Torah. A luncheon showing our support of the Torah Fund (a fundraiser for JTS and their affiliate schools) and honoring Annette will be held on Sunday, March 17, 2024. I look forward to seeing you at one of our future events and around temple at other times. With appreciation and support always. Janet Goldberg, Sisterhood President janet.goldberg2@verizon.net

Library Library News Sunday morning, Oct. 29, was a happy day for the Library, as guest readers Carolyn Keller and Harvey Bines read to the younger classes in their classrooms, after which the students came in to choose books to borrow.

Temple Emunah Library

The Library has a new schedule on Shabbat. It opens at 10 am, and you are welcome to sit in this quiet place and read, browse, meditate, or chat with a friend. As in the past, to avoid writing, use the envelopes on the desk to borrow books. Everyone has an envelope with their name on it. Put the book card in your envelope and leave it on the desk where indicated. Please remember that you can’t use cell phones or laptops in the synagogue, including here, on Shabbat. H.anukkah begins on Dec. 7 and we have about 150 wonderful books, both old and new, that are fun to read for the holiday,

Ladle Fund / Theme Nights The Ladle Fund The Ladle Fund is continuing to support and create synagogue programming which fosters and nourishes our community. So far this year, we are happy to have supported a range of programming over the holidays which is run by our excellent synagogue staff. Using a new approach, we provided $5,000 as a “block grant.” Thus, resources are used as the staff best sees fit provided the programming (like the Purim Dinner, for example) meets the Ladle Fund criteria of community building. Our own Ladle Fund Committee programming started with a breakfast for our Seniors on October 15 which served about 50-55 people. The intent is simply to get together in a social setting. Several attendees commented that they chatted with people they had not seen for months or much longer. The next breakfast for Seniors will be on Sunday, May 19. The Ladle Fund has also reviewed requests for support for programs planned by synagogue committees or, potentially, individual members. To apply for funds, please contact David Ezekiel (dae366@gmail.com). As they have done for many years, Joelle Gunther and Bob Russman-Halperin are continuing to provide innovative Themed Minyan experiences. Theme Nights after Minyan – An invitation to upcoming sessions Would you like to meet other temple members who share an interest with you? Help us make minyan at 7:30 pm, and then join in a low-stress, friendly gathering hosted by a temple member from 8:00-9:00 pm. We are now back in person and look forward to seeing you at these upcoming sessions: 1. Favorite Korean TV series on December 18 2. Software and AI in January (date to be announced) 3. Pittsburgh connections (Spring 2024) If you would like to host a theme minyan, please contact either Joelle Gunther (joellegunther@gmail.com) or Bob Russman-Halperin (bob.halperin@gmail.com). We’d love to help you plan a Theme Minyan on the topic of your choice. If you are inspired to support our work, please consider contributing to the Ladle Fund via the Temple Emunah website. The funds are used entirely for synagogue programming, aiming to reach as many people as possible. David Ezekiel, Chair

Rabbi Lerner (continued from page 1) An Israeli youngster in our neighborhood came trick or treating on Halloween. As I was giving her and her friends candy, I quietly asked her about how she was doing - she gave one of those pareve answers, which is the best I could muster as well. I asked her about her family in Israel. She said all her cousins had been called up, and I nodded my head in sympathy. *

I feel as though I have suddenly seen the stark evil in the world, and I want to run away from it. On the other hand, maybe it’s better to know how much hate there is and how much of it is directed at us. This Jew hatred has become more fully revealed, and it’s devastating to see it. It hurts my soul. But I force myself to look at the hate. To see what is real. The lack of empathy. The lack of caring. At one of our vigils and rallies, I was given the poster of Ella Elyakim, an eight-year-old girl from Kibbutz Nir Oz close to the Gaza border. Ella was kidnapped with her elder sister. Their father, stepmother, and stepbrother were all murdered. I carry her with me. Somehow I feel responsible for her. What do I do? What do we do?

14

Well, I am trying to support our community - college students afraid on their campuses, parents whose kids are experiencing anti-Semitism in their schools, and all of us who are suffering from the trauma of just hearing of this pogrom. I meet with Jewish leaders. I meet with our amazing staff and lay leaders. I meet with Christian clergy. I meet with school superintendents. I meet with the leaders of the Jewish Community Relations Council (JCRC). I meet with our interfaith association. I grab moments of joy when I can. A bris of a newborn. B’nei Mitzvah. Aufrufs. Weddings. I am grateful for each one - offering glimmers of hope, slivers of redemption. *

In a week, we will experience H.anukkah—the paradigmatic story of good overcoming evil. We know from history that the real story is much more complicated, but I want to hold onto the version I was told as a kid. Good wins out. The hostages will come home. Hamas will no longer torment Israel and its own people. Somehow, there will be a better future for all the people of Israel, Gaza,

Rabbi Lerner and the West Bank. There will be a better future for Jews - in Europe, here in America. Everywhere. But I am not sure.

My uncle, Rabbi Alvan Kaunfer, explains that this version, which is found in other early sources, means that “miracles still continue for us – it is not only a historical phenomenon.”

This is a concept that is most precious. There are miracles in our world. To me, they might not be exactly the same as As we light the H.anukkah candles each night, bringing the miracles described in our Torah, but they are miracles. more light into the darkness of this season, we recite two bless- Look outside, appreciate the glory of nature, appreciate the ings. Unlike all other occasions – Shabbat and festivals – when amazing complexity of the world, feel the embrace of a loved there is but a single blessing for candle lighting, H.anukkah one, smell the latkes frying. She’asah nisim noticing them brings a little more light into the world. lavoterinu bayamim hahem bazman hazeh” - we praise the May the lights of H.anukkah bring more hope and healing, Wondrous One who performed miracles for our ancestors in and open us up to the miracles that exist everywhere around those [ancient] days at this time of year. This is the standard us even in the darkness. And we can follow Eleanor Roosevelt’s version most of us learned and used - it sees the miracles as advice not to curse the darkness but to light a candle. belonging to the time of the Maccabees in 167-164 BCE. which is first found in the earliest extant prayer book, one from the ninth century called the Siddur of Rav Amram. He writes that the blessing should end with one additional letter: vav. Vav means “and.” Thus he ends the blessing by stating that miracles occurred in ancient times AND in our time.

Rabbi Lerner

Rabbi Lerner, Me’ir Sherer, and over 40 Temple Emunah members joined with Jewish communities from across the nation in Washington DC to rally for Israel. We are so proud of all our community members who are rallying for Israel, for the release of the hostages, and against antisemitism.

Disability & Inclusion How Quickly Life Changes It’s been a difficult few months. We sailed through Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, and entered Simh.at Torah with joy – until we awoke on Oct. 7. It didn’t take long to realize that Hamas was brutally killing Israelis. As I write this article, the killing continues and it’s already November. We prayed together, joined together in Boston, and stood with others across from Hayden at Hastings Park. Rabbi Lerner spoke as did other rabbis, but I was very touched by leaders from nearby churches. Perhaps most amazing was watching a woman walk up to the where Rabbi Lerner was as she carried a bouquet of flowers, continued to walk across the stage, placed the flowers on the stage without a word and walked off. We have called relatives and friends who are in Israel. We contacted young cousins who were living in the Dizengoff area. Their two families had decided it was time to return to the US. So, four young adults, one baby and one dog flew back to NY. Some of our grandchildren have creatively sent pictures and comments to our relatives. In 2022, we spent time in southern Israel including Ashdod and Ashkelon where we met the artist who had painted all the shelters in the area. He had spoken with Vered and her cousin Maddie in California. They wanted him to paint two shelters. He listened to their ideas, and we got to see how amazing they turned out. We were all thrilled to see how their shelters looked so beautiful and many young children all ran to see who was taking pictures of the shelter. They were very excited about their pretty new shelter. Now we are not certain if they are still standing. Our granddaughter Tamar decided that for her Bat Mitzvah she wanted to collect money for people who are having difficulty in the southern areas where we had been. She started this project even though her Bat Mitzvah isn’t until next March. So far, she has collected over $10,000. On Oct. 30, JNF asked Tamar to speak at their gathering. She was very excited to have been asked. Over 200 people attended and listened carefully to what Tamar said. She got a lot of applause and additional money was collected. Now we are concerned about the college students who have been angered by the Palestinians on campus. Our students feel uncomfortable and frightened. A few times, police have locked Jewish students in the library or suggested they not go

into the dining area. A few times when Palestinian students marched outside, the police stood in front of the Jewish student building so that no one would get hurt. We are lucky to have many of our new staff people who are available to talk with us, as well as with the students who are attending public schools, Jewish schools, high schools, day schools, and private schools. The shul is a safe space for students, with many adults available to provide support. Come December, CJP will be honoring and appreciating Ruderman Synagogue Inclusion Project (RSIP) at Temple Emanuel in Newton. “After nearly a decade of creating welcoming spaces for our Jewish community and opportunities for congregants of all abilities to fully participate, the RSIP has met its core objectives. And so CJP is sunsetting RSIP.” Temple Emunah was among the first three synagogues in the RSIP programs. We were able to be creative and supportive for teens and adults. We worked with Rabbi Lerner, Rabbi Michael Fel, Me’ir Sherer, and Rabbi Leora Kling Perkins, who all helped us organize programs and discussions. We thank our committee members who provided ideas and support. Thanks to: Carolyn Keller, Elizabeth, Peggy Moses, Leah Sugarman, Doreen Grossman, Pamela Goldstein, Sue Wolf-Fordham, Margo Zelermyer, and Lisa Gualtiera. If anyone wishes to join me at Temple Emanuel, just let me know so we can carpool. While RSIP will be ending its programming, we can continue our efforts to support individuals, especially those who are having difficulties with schoolwork or with friends. We are available to support faculty, teens, and adults at Emunah. Wishing you a warm December and a new start this year without war! Coat Boston – Help Children This Winter Coat Boston has been providing children in Boston with warm coats for the past twelve years. It was founded with the vision that all children in Boston deserve to be warm and safe each winter. Following the closing of City Mission Boston in 2022, Hancock Church in Lexington took over the operation for Coat Boston to ensure the continuity of this important mission. Coat Boston receives requests for coats from a variety of community organizations that serve families in need in the Boston area. Each year over 1,400 coats are provided to children in Boston thanks to the generous donations received. This year, recipient organizations are seeking donations of new coats, hats, gloves and mittens for children of all ages, and gift cards to Amazon, Target, and Walmart.

Donations may be dropped off at Coat Boston, Hancock Church, 1912 Massachusetts Ave. Lexington, during business hours Monday – Friday 9:00 am–4:00 pm. Please use the walkway leading to the red door at the front of the church, where you will find the donation box in the lower lobby area. Donations must be received at the Coat Boston collection site by December 10. These gifts will be distributed directly to schools and community organizations in Boston that serve individuals and families in need. Additional information on donations including links for purchasing gift cards and how to contact us can be found at: https://www.hancockchurch.org/explore/coatboston/
