From Rabbi Lerner

Inviting Guests Again

The Seder is the number one Jewish ritual that American Jews practice. And with good reason: it’s fun, tasty, and hopefully creative, and who doesn’t like a good story?

One other aspect is the guests; inviting family and friends and any one in need of a Seder is vital. In fact, the Seder opens with an invitation for those who are hungry to come in and eat.

Growing up, I learned a lot at our seders. Since my father, Rabbi Stephen Lerner, z”l, was the founder and director of the Center for Conversion to Judaism, he would invite his students to the Seder. This meant that the conversation was enriched by people from many different backgrounds eager to learn and participate.

I will never forget that.

Many of his students came from around the globe - from the Philippines to Mexico to France, among other places, and they brought with them their languages. We would invite them all to recite the Four Questions in their native tongue. It made for a wonderful experience, one that we continue in our home.

“This is the season when people of all faiths and cultures are pushing back against the planetary darkness. We string bulbs, ignite bonfires, and light candles. And we sing.”

Our winter months are when we need to rely upon each other for joy and light, and thus the timing of H anukkah and the secular New Year give us extra opportunities to warm each other with our presence. Also, during this time, staff and volunteers are plan ning progrAMs for the spring! Now is a good time to notify committee chairs of your programming ideas!

Regarding the activities of the Board of Directors, efforts are continuing in order to maintain the building and parson ages, the religious school, preschool, Shabbat and daily minya nim, and dynamic programming. We continue to find ways to keep our community more secure and safe. We are pursuing the implementation of the new Community Forums and are thinking about how best to maximize the overall operational health of Temple Emunah.

I encourage you to continue to find ways to engage with the family and adult progamming that Temple Emunah offers. Within these pages, you will find many different ways to socialize and deepen connections with fellow Temple Emunah members as well as deepen our connection with the Jewish tradition.

“There always were two ways to live in a world that is often dark and full of tears. We can curse the darkness or we can light a light, and as the Chassidim say, a little light drives out much darkness. May we all help light up the world.”

– Rabbi Jonathan Sacks z”l

My friends, the world is far from perfection – but what we do have control over is our own interactions with those immediately surrounding us. Each time we engage with one another, our joy and love brighten the room! Looking forward to seeing you again soon. Thank you for bringing your energy and adding to the warm brilliance of Temple Emunah.

Happy H . anukkah!

Minyan Story: Nine Other Jews

When I was asked to write about minyan, I replied that I didn’t have a special story (and it certainly wasn’t exciting). The caller prevailed, so here goes.

After my mother died in 2013, the support of daily minyan greatly helped me with my grief and made the time then pass a little faster. It was a great comfort sharing with others who experienced the same.

Since I retired this past February, I have tried to attend minyan several times per week. I can come up with different excuses as to why I don’t attend daily, but I will focus, instead, on the reasons I DO go to minyan.

I attend to support others who are saying Kaddish. For the most part, I also like to daven as my expression of gratitude to God. Going to morning minyan is a special way for me to begin my day. Evening minyan, when I go, is a nice way to end my day’s activities. Going to services helps give structure and meaning to a part of my day.

I enjoy talking with others there, especially coming out of two years of COVID isolation. At minyan over the years, I have had the privilege of getting to know better some extraordinary people such as Lowell Bensky z’l and Dick Wissoker z’l.

During the years, I have attended several other synagogues in our travels. We have a very special home here and are truly fortunate to have twice-daily minyan.

Join us at minyan – help make sure we have at least ten people to pray. If you have a minyan story, please send it to Dawny@aboutfacepr.com so we can share it here.

iEngage: Together and Apart

A video lecture class from the Hartman Institute facili tated by our rabbis. Through video lectures, interviews, and textual sources, this course addresses the complex features of Jewish peoplehood and the contemporary challenges to the Jewish people in an era in which we have moved from having no home to having two different, vibrant homes in Israel and in North America. This year we will teach the first half of the curriculum, and we will explore the second half the following year. There are two options for how to take this course.

Join Rabbi Kling Perkins to explore Dirshuni, edited by Tamar Biala, a newly published collection of Israeli women’s midrash (creative writing inspired by biblical and rabbinic texts), now out in English translation. We will explore how these women used an old structure to offer new insights and see how those ideas impact our own understanding of the Bible, Judaism, and the world around us.

Rabbi Kling Perkins will provide copies of all texts, but you are welcome to order the book if you would like to have it.

Email Efrat Assulin at eassulin@templeemunah.org for Zoom links and registration information.

The Four Who Entered the Orchard: Midrash, Myth, and Poetry

Sunday mornings: Jan. 22, Jan. 29, Feb. 5

9:45-11 AM with Rabbi Lerner

In this class, we will explore the classic narrative about the four rabbis who entered a mysterious spiritual space that changed them forever. Through rabbinic, medieval, and mod ern texts and poetry, we will unpack the layers of meaning, learning who these rabbis were and what we can learn from them about our own lives.

Women and Headcovering

Sunday, February 12, 10:30 AM , hybrid

If you walk into a synagogue today during services, you may see women wearing kippot, hats, scarves, or nothing on their heads, whereas Temple Emunah and many other synagogues expect all men to wear a kippah. Why the differ ence, and what does Jewish tradition have to say about this? Take part in the International Seminar for Halakhic Study, an effort to unite Jews around the world in studying one paper on a contemporary Jewish practice. We will read Rabbi Jane Kanarek’s 2019 paper “Women and Headcovering” and explore our own relationships to this cultural practice.

Preschool

Billy Dalwin Preschool (BDPS) Update

When thinking about joining the Leadership Team at BDPS, I had a question: How would four women with differ ent life experiences, views, and communication styles work effectively to lead the preschool into the new school year? But there we were, the four of us, sitting at a table in the Library of Temple Emunah with laptops open, ready to create forward momentum as we hit the ground running. With kavod in our hearts, we started talking and typing, and quickly came to the realization prompting my big question. We were running together but knocking each other out of the lanes at every moment, trying to get a point across or an idea shared. We had to create lanes that were distinct but had overlaps in a way that didn’t knock someone off their feet. So that is exactly what we did. And we haven’t looked back!

The Leadership Team remains ever grateful for the dedi cated and nurturing staff who are the real stars of the show; because of them, the first two months of school have been simply AMazing at BDPS. We started with a staff week where seasoned and new staff came together to learn, practice CPR skills, and relax in a calming yoga class led by alumni par ent Jen Geller. For the first time since COVID, we have been welcoming families in for drop-off and pick-up and seeing the joy on everyone’s faces as we come together as a kehillah once again is lovely and inspiring. The Playground and Popsicles event was well attended, despite the cold weather, as hardy New Englanders laughed, played, and ate popsicles in mittens!

The children tasted and created art with apples, learned about beekeeping and how to make honey, and got in the spirit of welcoming in the High Holy Days. Rabbi Lerner taught the children about the shofar, and they loved listening to him blow it and make various sounds. Rabbi Kling Perkins had a great discussion about tashlikh with the children as they

gathered around a kiddie pool filled with water. For Sukkot, the children got to shake the lulav and smell the etrog with both Rabbis. Watching the Rabbis interact with the students is inspiring, and we know they love the interactions as much as the children do.

The children play, learn, and eat outside for hours every day. Play, both indoor and outdoor, is at the very core of our school, and we are so fortunate to have such incredible outdoor space with both our traditional playground and our nature playscapes of Teva. When in Teva, the children are drawn to creating all sorts of structures and forts, from the natural loose parts that abound from tiny acorns and stones, to large, fallen branches and logs. The bountiful garden has provided incred ible opportunities to learn about planting veggies, caring for them by weeding and watering, and enjoying the food when picked. So far, the children have picked loads of raspberries and harvested garlic, onions, and carrots.

The highlight of our week continues to be our school Shabbat gathering, where we all climb on board the Shabbat rekevet for a joyous time filled with songs, prayer, and com munity building! We have begun welcoming guests in for our Shabbat Helper program, and the children get so excited to see their family members join them for Shabbat as they help with lighting candles, making kiddush over the grape juice, and saying hamotzi over the delicious challah. We are looking forward to a year full of kehillah, learning, and lots and lots of fun!

Library

Mitzvah Extravaganza

As we begin the colder months, some of us are looking for ways to warm up. What better way than try ing some new recipes? Our library features many popu lar cookbooks, old and new.

Temple Emunah Library

Cookbooks by Susie Fishbein, Joan Nathan, Temple Emunah Sisterhood, and Ottolenghi all have delicious recipes you might like to try. One of my grand daughters’ favorite recipes is a Cheese Kugel that I still enjoy making, contributed by Nita Rodman, z’l, in the Sisterhood’s first cookbook (1972), Food for Thought (page 60).

Here is a sampling of other cookbooks: A Taste of Challah; Ratner’s Meatless Cookbook; Classic Cuisine of the Italian Jews (2 vols.); Babka, Boubou & Blintzes: Jewish Chocolate Recipes;

Sababa; Zahav; the Book of New Israeli Food; and The Chosen: Appetizers and Desserts from the Best Recipes in 120 Jewish Cookbooks.

The Kosher Baker: Over 160 Dairy-free Recipes from Traditional to Trendy; The Molly Goldberg Jewish Cookbook; Hip Kosher: 175 Easy-to-Prepare Recipes; Feed Me Bubbe: Recipes and Wisdom; and Baghdad to Bombay: In the Kitchen of My Cousins.

These are just a few of the many diverse cookbooks that you can borrow to spice up your dinners and holidays at home. Whether it’s Kosher-Chinese, Persian, or Sephardic style, you can find them in our library.

Please note that the Library will now be open from 12-1:30 PM on Shabbat. You can check out books by using the envelope with your name on it. Just put the book card in the envelope and leave it on the desk.

Mitzvah Extravaganza

Emunah Mitzvah Extravaganza in October was attended by representatives of 15 different Social Justice/Tikkun Olam Committees plus over 40 congregants. The goals were to:

• Publicize the services/programs Temple volunteers provide to fellow congregants, the synagogue, and the broader community.

• Explain how congregants can volunteer to help with any of these Social Justice/Tikkun Olam programs.

Some of the attendees signed up to volunteer on the spot. We had a prize drawing, and two Religious School students,

Lucy Ross and Aviva Winthrop were awarded Amazon gift cards. Adding to the festive atmosphere, the Youth groups sold bagels.

Many of us, who, due to COVID, participated in services and other activities over Zoom, had missed the togetherness so central to Temple Emunah. Several participants expressed gratitude that with events like Mitzvah Extravaganza, the Temple was regaining its sense of community.

Family Table

THE MANY FACES OF JF&CS’ FAMILY TABLE: DID YOU KNOW……??

JF&CS serves more than 550 families every month, and last year they distributed more than 35,000 bags of food! Temple Emunah has and continues to contribute bags of brown rice and boxes of whole wheat crackers for many years. Kol Ha’Kavod to all of us for making Family Table a priority in our lives.

Beginning this Fall JF&CS’s Family Table is holding a second Sunday distribution in Waltham for Allston/Brighton area clients.

This is the first time that a second distribution date has been added to serve a specific area of Greater Boston in light of an increased need in this location.

Volunteers are needed to:

• Pack and deliver groceries on Sunday distribution days. Children are welcome. See the upcoming distribution dates in the chart below.

• Pack bags — Due to the expanded demand during the pan demic, we need help carefully pre-packing bags on weekdays.

• Assist during Marketplace in Waltham — Volunteers help to distribute perishable items, restock, and help clients carry bags to their cars every Tuesday and the first Wednesday of the month. This requires the capacity to move around quickly, stay on your feet the entire shift, lift at least 25+ lb, and have an attention to detail. Age 17 and over.

If you have questions, contact Family Table at family table@jfcsboston.org, 781-693-5593, or read more details at: https://www.jfcsboston.org/Volunteer/Volunteering-at-JF-CS

All volunteers age 18 and older must undergo a JF&CS CORI (Criminal Offender Record Information) background check, and those age five and older need to provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination. This documentation is due two weeks prior to the distribution.

SPECIAL ROSH HASHANAH FOOD DELIVERY AND THE RIDE FOR FOOD

Some 146 JF&CS volunteers delivered 3,000 Rosh Hashanah holiday meals to families in need. In partnership with CJP (Combined Jewish Philanthropies) and JFS of Metrowest, our volunteers delivered traditional holiday foods all over Greater Boston to make sure that people could celebrate the important holiday.

The Ride for Food 2022 was a great success! Our Family Table team braved the wind and chill to ride or walk, all to help feed families in need. We are so grateful to every team member, volunteer, and donor that made this year’s Ride so special – we couldn’t have done it without you! With your support, Family Table will be able to provide nutritious groceries to hundreds of families facing food insecurity this year. We are thrilled to announce we hit our original fundraising goal of $68,000!

ADDITIONAL WAYS OF GIVING TO JF&CS

This holiday season, you can also contribute to bringing joy to families who, due to rising inflation and other factors, might struggle to afford gifts for their children. With our support, JF&CS will provide gift cards for more than 500 families this year.

You can support the drive by donating online or mail ing JF&CS Target gift cards in increments of $50. To donate online, visit bit.ly/jfcsgiftcards. Gift cards can be sent to: Kathy Arnold Jewish Family & Children’s Service 1430 Main Street, Waltham, MA 02451.

Your ongoing contributions of bringing rice and crackers and your donation of time to deliver food to clients are sin cerely appreciated. We also welcome your online donations to Family Table on the Temple Emunah website so we can purchase needed food items for JF&CS.

Sisterhood / Disability & Inclusion

On October 13, Sisterhood held its first in person Paid-Up Membership Supper in three years. While we were able to have wonderful suppers during the trying days of COVID with a driveup pick-up and Zoom events, we greatly enjoyed being in person.

As we are trying to get back to in person activities, we still have reserva tions about how to comfortably pull off events: who will come, who will not come, is the program meaningful, and just how to promote the event as COVID still lingers yet we want to be done with it!

What I have learned from Temple Emunah events is that people have different interpretations of an RSVP. I was curi ous about What Exactly Is an RSVP? The term “RSVP” comes from the French expression répondez s’il vous plaît, meaning “please respond.” So, basically, when do you have to respond? Invitations requiring an RSVP will have instructions on how to respond, often including a deadline for response, as the host is finalizing numbers for the event meal as well as other details relating to room set-up, seating arrangements, and the necessary end of event needs.

I have found that many people at Emunah have a hard time with RSVPs. There are many questions they need to ask before committing to events. They need to figure out if anyone else they know is going, if they are going to enjoy the program, if it will be too early or too late, what food is being served, and just generally have the feeling that it doesn’t matter as there will always be enough food for latecomers and those who may not have submitted an RSVP.

Over the past three years, Sisterhood has not charged for any of our events. We never turned anyone down. We added people at the last minute (yet I do wish these people knew that there is a head count and expense to the free meal and program). So, what happened at our dinner? Sixty-five people signed up, and about sixty-two people showed up! This was AMAZING! Our publicity was done the “Janet Way!” What does this mean? It means that I think about everyone: those who have not replied, those who I have not seen in a long time, those who are missing from shul, etc. Personal emails begin to circulate. Reminders from ME (please don’t move my email to spam). Other committees at Emunah ask us how we get so many RSVPs for our events – with many coming in ever so quickly, especially those for our signature Dinner and a Movie events. Joelle and others refer to it as “Janet’s distribution list.”

Sisterhood continues to work on our 2022/23 calendar. Unfortunately, we are still having concerns about our events and if they will able to be indoors as the cold and flu season arrives, and if there will be additional COVID variants on our doorstep.

Our thought is to move ahead. Our next event will take place on December 8 – “H anukkah Cookie Decorating” served the BAD way (beverages, appetizers & dessert). We are coming back. Whether inside or out (TBD), but I can tell you there will be an RSVP.

Hope to see you then – if not before!

L’shalom, Janet Goldberg, Sisterhood President janet.goldberg2@verizon.net

Disability & Inclusion News

This year has been difficult for many of us who felt alone and isolated. We have taken walks with friends whenever possible. The Kosher Dills have played Pickleball (even when the weather hit 35ish degrees)! Some of us have gotten better at playing, but all of us have laughed and talked about family events, health, and vacations. In many ways we have con nected with each other and gotten to know each other better. We will miss the warm weather, so we have another project to get involved in!

February brings JDAIM: Jewish Disability Awareness, Acceptance, and Inclusion Month. Our committee will be meeting on Zoom to discuss events for February at Emunah. We are examining some ideas – videos/movies, speakers. We will be collaborating with Meir Sherer to involve our teens. Our committee is open to members who are interested in creating inclusive programs for individuals with disabilities. Contact Sandy Miller-Jacobs (sandymj@gmail.com) to join us.

COVID and how the times have changed!

Shalom H . averim!

First off, I want to thank all the congregants who assisted us with ushering during the High Holidays and give special thanks to Ed Willins for making it all happen!

I also want to thank all the Brotherhood members who helped to build and then take down the Sukkah, with special thanks to David Goldberg for leading the effort!

We are excited that this fall, we began to get together in person once again!

In September, we were able to gather IN PERSON to celebrate our Brotherhood Man of the Year: David Geller Special thanks to Howard Epstein for all his leadership in making this a wonderful evening.

We have also been able to meet in person for our monthly Board meetings and Breakfast. These will continue, and please feel free to join in!

We are starting up our speaker series and plan to have another excellent lineup this year, led again by Alan Silver. Please stay tuned for event details.

In December, we will be gathering to construct our mas sive H anukkiah. We will also be holding our annual Brew Fest and Softball planning meeting.

In 2023 we will have our annual Build-A-Pair event on February 5 and Worldwide Wrap & Supper Bowl party on February 12.

Many other events are coming – check the calendar on the website for dates and specifics. We are always looking for more congregants to get involved and help us with any or all of our events. Please reach out to me if you are interested in helping with any of our many projects.

Thanks,

Scott Damsky, Brotherhood President brotherhood@templeemunah.org

Congratulations to Scott Lerman on being awarded the Keeper of the Flame. The Award is now named for Mo Diamant z”l.

The Ladle Fund

The Ladle Fund is committed to supporting our community by fostering community connections through participatory events open to all.

This year, we have supported various holiday celebrations and have committed to supporting some community-wide learning opportunities. It is our intention to plan and run events that meet our mission’s objectives, and we will be tell ing you about that in the coming weeks.

Bob Russman-Halperin and Joelle Gunther continue to arrange our Themed Minyanim, incorporating discussions about a pre-selected theme/topic after evening minyan (prayer service). Have an interest you want to share with others at a Theme Night? A movie or book you would like to discuss? Please contact Bob (bob.halperin@gmail.com) or Joelle (joel legunther@gmail.com), and we will help you make it happen. Upcoming theme minyanim include:

• December 6: Harvard Connections (students, faculty, staff, alumni, parents, and anyone who really likes – or dislikes – Harvard)

• January 10: Discussing the movie Disobedience (based on the prize-winning 2006 novel by Naomi Alderman, a former member of a London Jewish Orthodox community)

• February (date TBD): Israeli Television (discussing the latest and best straming shows from Israel)

Please mark your calendar and plan to join us.

We also welcome applications for funding activities and events that will encourage community connections. As we return to in-person events, we look forward to hearing from you about what activities interest you. Contact David Ezekiel (david@servoflo.com) or Meli Solomon (meli.solomon@gmail. com) for more information.

New members of our Ladle Fund Committee are always welcome! Please email David Ezekiel if you have any ques tions or interest.

Thank you, David Ezekiel and Meli Solomon, Ladle Co-Chairs

Brotherhood
What you put in the pot, comes out in the ladle!
Right: Diamant family members at the Keeper of the Flame event.

But, it would not have been possible without guests. Hakhnasat orhim, welcoming guests, is a core mitzvah (com mandment) in our tradition. So much so, that when the Talmud wants to list its top mitzvot (these are the deeds that yield immediate “fruit” and continue to yield fruit in the time to come): welcoming guests is right up there. (Kiddushin 39b)

Notably, this begins with our earliest spiritual ancestors: Abraham and Sarah. When Abraham sees three men coming toward him one day, he runs from his tent, greeting them with an invitation to eat “a morsel of bread.” (Gen 18:5). Of course, this is no morsel, but an entire meal, hastily, but lovingly prepared by Sarah. Sure enough, these guests bring the good news that Sarah will become pregnant.

My rabbinical (and high school) classmate, Rabbi Shai Held, points out that Abraham does not engage in this act of welcoming at a random, free moment, but in the midst of another moment. The chapter opens: “Vayera eilav AdonaiGod appeared to him by the terebinths of Mamre.” (Gen 18:1)

Abraham is turning the accepted and expected priorities on their head. While we might think that greeting God would take precedence over other encountering these unknown men, the opposite is what the Torah teaches. The Talmud makes this reversal explicit: “Rabbi Judah said in Rav’s name: ‘Welcoming guests is greater than welcoming the presence of the Shekhinah (the Divine Presence), for it is written, ‘My lords, if it please you, do not go past your servant.’” (Shabbat 127a) Emphasizing this value, Rabbi Judah claims that Abraham’s invitation to these strangers proved that the Shekhinah is not as important as this act of loving-kindness.

The Maharal of Prague, Judah Loew ben Bezalel, a 16th century rabbi, explains that “welcoming guests is tantamount to honoring God. To welcome a guest into your home and treat him with respect because he is created in the likeness and image of God—this is considered like honoring the Shekhinah itself.”

Welcoming guests is like welcoming the face of God.

That brings us to this time, a time when it has been most challenging to invite guests over for a meal. But, I believe that it is time to return to this core practice.

So try it.

Invite someone over from shul – especially someone you have seen at Kiddush but never had over. I cannot tell you how much it means to be invited. Many in our community would love to be asked. So, if you are in doubt: invite. It could be new members, long-time members, or families in your child’s grade.

Since we have different approaches to COVID in our com munity, try to address it head-on. Perhaps tell your guests you are going to test that day, and they can do the same.

Dinner doesn’t need to be a fancy affair with linen napkins. And it doesn’t have to be a five-course meal – have pizza after Kiddush and Motzi!

The power is not in the food but in the company of oth ers. It’s a gift to those invited, and it’s also a gift to the host. Your experience of Shabbat, a holiday, or any other moment will be elevated.

Filling your home with new voices, conversations, and perhaps different languages, is a gift to you and to your guests. Meet new people!

We will be organizing a Shabbat in your neighborhood in January to make it easier to host or be welcomed into a dinner. Look for details in your inbox!

Remember: inviting and welcoming others is a blessing, one akin to seeing the face of God.

Happy Hanukkah, Rabbi David Lerner

P.S. Temple Emunah invites the entire congrgation to our annual H . anukkah dinner on Wednesday, December 21; for details see page 1 – and please sign up early!
