H desh Summer 2020

Sivan – Elul 5780

From Rabbi Lerner Zooming into the Future It was the summer of 586 BCE when the Babylonian army laid siege to Jerusalem. Facing the major superpower of the time, the small Judean army did not stand a chance. Things had been going downhill for some time as the Israelites tried to align themselves with Egypt, the other superpower of the time. Finally, on the ninth of Av, King Nebuchadnezzar destroyed the city and the First Temple was burned to the ground. A trauma that began with the Assyrians destroying the Northern Kingdom of Israel 140 years earlier was now complete. The Judean empire was no more; its leaders were exiled to the banks of the Euphrates to weep and mourn. That should have marked the end of the Israelite civilization. There had been many other civilizations in the ancient world. Some examples include the Assyrian Empire, the Babylonian Empire, the Persian Empire, the Roman Empire. They all rose and then fell and that was that. Until 586 BCE, the Israelites had a nice little run of about a millennium plus or minus; they had a thriving culture, a Temple, and some great texts. But that should have been it. Like the other great civilizations, the Israelite civilization should have come to an end. (continued on page 12)

Our Upcoming Events We hope you have been doing well despite these difficult times. Please note that all events listed for the summer are currently expected to be virtual, and the Temple Emunah building will likely remain closed until the fall, and perhaps beyond, depending on decisions made by Governor Baker and our own team and ad hoc health committee. We are still confirming details about many of our upcoming events, so stay tuned for more information. We appreciate everyone’s patience and flexibility as we navigate these new norms. Links to join our Zoom meetings for events are sent out in our weekly emails, and are also listed on our Google calendar. To find our calendar, go to the main page of our website, and click on the right-hand tab at the top of the page. For Shabbat, we also live-stream services, for those who wish to participate that way. For questions regarding Zoom or other event issues, please be in touch with Raveetal Celine at rceline@templeemunah.org or 781-861-0300.

President's Message I would like to introduce myself. I am Mark Bobrow. My wife, Cindy, and I have lived in Lexington for 27 years and have been part of the Temple Emunah community for 28 years. We have two daughters, Elizabeth and Jennifer, who attended Temple Emunah religious school and had their B’not Mitzvah at Temple Emunah. Elizabeth was married at Temple Emunah in 2015 with Rabbi Lerner officiating. I have been on the Board for sixteen years serving as a Member at Large, Publicity Chair, Brotherhood President, Associate Financial Officer, Treasurer, Finance Vice President and, most recently, Executive Vice President. Cindy is also involved with the synagogue as part of the Sisterhood. If you have purchased Rosh Hashanah Honey or Passover Chocolate, you have interacted with Cindy. Professionally, I am a biochemist. I enjoy music, woodworking and just about everything Disney. Special thanks to our rabbis, staff and volunteers for their efforts in keeping our community functioning. My gratitude also goes to the Officers and Board members who are stepping down and to the returning and new Board members who have chosen to take on new challenges. I am starting the Presidency at an unprecedented time. We are in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, sheltered in our homes and told to practice social distancing. However, the Temple Emunah community is not practicing social distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic. On the contrary, we have embraced social connecting while practicing safe physical distancing. We have maintained our two daily minyanim, celebrated three B’nei Mitzvah on consecutive Saturdays spanning March and April, and Kabbalat Shabbat and Havdalah services have continued. Yizkor services on the last day of Pesah. and the Yom Hashoah service were extremely well attended. The numbers of participants are often higher than when we were meeting in person. Attending daily services has provided the opportunity for people to connect and reach out to make sure everyone is well. We have a group of volunteers calling members to check on their well-being and providing assistance to those who are in need. Religious school just ended. Teachers held classes remotely. T here wa s even a Yad Wed nesday n ig ht meal via home deliver y by Me’ ir Sherer. Meditation sessions, yoga classes, study with the rabbis, Niggun Saloons, theme minyanim and many other programs have continued and grown. For Pesah., there were sessions on how to hold remote sedarim, a bedikat hametz search, and a virtual seder the first night. We held two community COVID-19 discussions led by our members Dr. David Geller and Dr. Wendy Heiger-Bernays, who are on the Lexington Board of Health. Maintaining our social connections could not have been possible without the extraordinary efforts and creativity of our staff, and especially Rabbi Lerner and Rabbi Kling Perkins. Inclusion / President Living through a Pandemic while Maintaining our Values and Relationships Life has certainly slowed down. We are now staying at home, which sounds better than being in lockdown, but our calendars are not as full as they had been. Going places means we take a walk, somewhere, anywhere. Days have become Thisday, Thatday, Someday, and many of us feel like we have become cast members of “Groundhog Day.” While we used to schmooze with people during kiddush and go to restaurants with friends, we now Zoom to see faces, even if there are too many Zoomers to have an in-depth conversation. Our kids and grandkids have fully entered the digital school. They seem to have adapted better than we have to technology. When I asked my youngest granddaughter how kindergarten was after having been on Pesah. “vacation” for two weeks, she quickly responded, “Amazing.” Her mother told me she had a play date with a friend and needed to find her backpack so they could finish their game. Our grandson, also in kindergarten, learned to ride his bike in one day outside and we watched as he took off going faster than I thought possible. His two older sisters had spent hours redesigning their shared bedroom. Their desks had been moved next to each other, but a few days later they were in a T shape. They divided the books they have outgrown into piles for their brother and, if they were too girlie for him, to cousins. Of course, you must see life from their perspective. They get lots of undivided time with their parents – at least when they aren’t working – and spend hours with each other, clearly developing new bonds among themselves. The oldest granddaughters take care of the youngest ones, offering help and

fun. The middle granddaughters played with both their older and younger siblings as well as their friends. We, on the other hand, had evolved into the elders, whom some politicians defined as people who could die now rather than in the future. Just like that we stared ageism in the face! What have we learned from these past weeks? We are more social than we thought and miss what we did as teens, hang out with our friends. We read, wash our hands, watch TV, meditate, wash our hands, exercise, cook, eat and wash our hands. We have Zoomed with friends for dinner, tea parties, cocktail parties, and book groups. Suddenly, we had time to reconnect with friends from long ago and relatives, some whom we talk with regularly and some whom we haven’t spoken to in a long while. Life can be lonely, but we have reached out to others and find that even a short conversation via phone or FaceTime, is uplifting. Let’s remember as we come out of this pandemic, that it’s relationships that enhance our lives. Maybe we’ll choose not to spend our time shopping, but in continuing to nurture our relationships to others who are close or only casual connections. We now appreciate the importance of seeing and talking with others. We know our mental health and social relationships are interconnected, just as we are interconnected with our larger community. “Reach out and touch someone.”

Our rabbis have also been tasked with providing a high level of pastoral care and bereavement support in these exceedingly difficult times. The well-being of our community is of paramount importance to our rabbis. We should keep them and their families’ well being in our thoughts and prayers. We took swift action to maintain financial stability through the end of this fiscal year (June 30, 2020). Facing the painful likelihood of reducing staff, we applied immediately for relief from the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) of the federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act, introduced in late March. Offered in the form of loans to small businesses, including nonprofits, with 500 or fewer employees and impacted by COVID-19, PPP loans were approved and distributed nationally, via local banks, on a first come, first served basis. The entire pool of $350 billion in PPP funding was drained in the program’s opening week. By the end of Pesah., thanks to the tremendous efforts of Melissa Warneck, Howard Epstein, Alisa Billings and Eyal Dvir (and other staff, as well as support from JFNA and

CJP), Temple Emunah secured a $317,900 loan to be largely or completely forgiven when used to pay salaries. Those funds arrived on April 24, allowing us to continue to compensate staff, including pre-school teachers. There is a high level of uncertainty as we progress into our next fiscal year. Our Finance Team is modeling various scenarios and developing contingency plans. As with other crises, we will get through this by the hard work of our rabbis, staff, volunteers, and the value our members place on Temple Emunah as a connecting and caring community. Thank you for your trust in me and our amazingly resilient community. Please be in touch with me at President@ TempleEmunah.org if you have any questions or concerns. Have a wonderful summer and I hope to see you in person and/or through Zoom!

L’Shalom, Mark Bobrow president@templeemunah.org

Religious Services / Holidays / Minyan Story Shavuot starts the evening of Thursday, May 28

My Minyan Experience

Join us for an all-night* pajama party on Zoom with lots of options to learn, cook, and even sing around a campfire! The celebration will conclude with a sunrise service, when we will collectively reenact the receiving of the Torah. Sessions will be taught by Rabbis Eisenman, Lerner, and Kling Perkins, as well as many other members of our community. We will have an option to pick up a pre-packaged meal before the holiday starts, complete with treats to keep you going all night. Check your email for links and details. *Join in at any point during the night.

When I was working, I used to be an occasional minyan participant. I would attend for holidays and to say kaddish for yahrzeits. The time in traffic was what discouraged me. I live in Wayland and the traffic on Route 20 can make that part of the trip alone take 30 or so minutes, so I would need to allow 45 minutes each way. Then, there is the Route 128 part of the trip. Now, with Zoom morning minyans, I look forward to attending nearly every day. I am a morning person so morning minyans are great for me. I love to tune in early, to see everyone and participate in the camaraderie and laughs that happen before the minyan begins. Then, the service itself is so perfect for setting me up for the day with the theme of gratitude throughout the service. And, I appreciate the time for saying prayers in a group for those who are not well to support each other. There is also the opportunity to learn and think about Torah during the Monday and Thursday morning services. One strong motivator for me is being part of a team whose goal is to help ensure we have enough people to make a minyan for those in mourning or saying kaddish for a yahrzeit. It is good to feel useful during this challenging time for everyone. We are blessed with a wonderful Temple Emunah family whose members work hard to make Temple Emunah a community and religious center. I’ll close with this: Try it, you’ll like it. (If you are a night person, the evening minyan might be right for you.) Arleen Chase

Tishah B’Av: July 29-30 Tishah B’Av marks the saddest day on the Jewish calendar. On this occasion, many Jews fast and hold special services to commemorate various tragedies of our past, including the destruction of both Temples, the failed Bar Kochkba revolt against the Romans, the expulsion of England’s Jews in 1290 and the 1492 banishment of all Jews from Spain. Join us to mark this occasion together with prayer, a candlelit reading of Megillat Eikhah and song. Schedule: Wednesday, July 29, 8 pm: Minhah/Maariv, Eikhah and Kinot Thursday, July 30, 6:45 am: Shaharit and Eikhah reading Thursday, July 30, 1:30 pm: Special Tishah B’Av Minh.ah

Celebrating Passover

If you have a minyan story that you would like to share, contact Kathy Macdonald (knmacdonald@verizon.net).

Rabbi Leora Kling Perkins of Temple Emunah and Rabbi Carl Perkins of Temple Aliyah in Needham annunced that members of both congrgations would join together for a virtual Seder on the first night of Passover.

Social Connecting / Family Programs Social Connecting Physical Distancing Initiative I don’t typically record dates when I learn a new catch phrase. I’ve made an exception for March 12, 2020. That day, Rabbi Kling Perkins asked me if I’d like to meet to discuss Social Distancing and to brainstorm ideas of how to keep our community connected going forward. I was well aware of COVID-19 by then, but unclear, as most of us were, as to what measures to use to prevent the pandemic from spreading. The measures of how we’d flatten the curve weren’t fully revealed, nor what a potential time frame would look like. I didn’t know then that the prescribed approach was to physically separate ourselves, and that we would keep this distance from each other for months to come. I remember not sensing an urgency, not understanding the full impact that social distancing would have on Emunah’s members. A group met online (my first remote shul meeting that would launch a hundred more to come!) made up of those who had experience in social connecting and cared a great deal about how we would proceed with outreach at a time when we cannot be physically present together. Rabbi Lerner joined Rabbi Kling Perkins in the early planning stage, as well as Becca Weintraub, Emunah’s Hebrew College Rabbinic Intern, Jane Aronson, Hineni Chair, and Alissa Kotler Berkowitz and Gami Maislin, Social Action Chairs. We named our initiative Emunah’s Social Connecting Physical Distancing. It was created as a temporary arm of Hineni and the Hineni Connecting team, while the majority of our caring community work was to be put on hold. The initiative has a few parts: the first was introducing the Social Connecting Physical Distancing survey, requesting volunteers to make calls to the entire community, offering to grocery shop and do errands for the elderly and those with vulnerable conditions, and assist with tech support for Zoom and other platforms or online grocery ordering. The survey also invites any members to request help with any of these. The second part is making telephone check-in calls to all 565 Emunah households. This started with calls to the eldest members, and recently just reached the youngest families and members. The third part is matching those requesting help with volunteers. The fourth part is the ongoing, followup calls to the eldest members and maintaining a connection with them. As of now, over 900 initial calls were made from our eldest member at 100 years old, to the youngest at 29, by 58 volunteers. We have 27 outstanding volunteers to grocery shop, and eight to offer tech support. Dozens of matches have been made since mid-March. It’s truly amazing! I’ve had the privilege to learn many stories of how members have given of themselves and how beautifully that help is received. These are h.esed stories, connections made through kindness. There was a couple in their 90’s who had no kosher meat. Their son was quarantined, couldn’t shop for them, and the online services couldn’t provide it. A generous volunteer shopped for them and delivered the meat to their doorstep. Another volunteer created a coffee klatch group from the list of elders she called in March. She is now getting these 80 and 90 year olds together on weekly Zoom calls that include ice breakers and honest, open discussions.

As I write this at the start of Week 8 of Social Distancing, I marvel at our incredible lay leadership. Kol Hakavod! So many of you led with your hearts to connect with and help fellow Emunah congregants at this challenging time. It’s a time that naturally feels isolating and lonely for so many of us. As Becca Weintraub included at the bottom of the survey, Rabbi Akiva taught: “Love your neighbor as yourself ” Leviticus 19:18. This is the most important rule in the Torah (Jerusalem Talmud Nedarim 20b). This golden rule teaching very much defines who we are at Emunah today. As the initiative began to take root, I penned an expression reflecting what’s true: “When it rains, it pours hesed at Emunah!” Linda Skolnik, Coordinator

Family Programming: A Virtual Goodbye When I started working at Temple Emunah in 2007 it was July, so it was very quiet in the Education Office. But starting in August, I was already getting impromptu visits from USY board members, who were eager to plan a year of events, retreats, Shabbat dinners and teen minyanim, and to get involved in NERUSY programming. I quickly learned that enthusiasm and leadership skills at Temple Emunah were strong across the ages. For four years I had the privilege of working alongside our youth staff and teens, sleeping over at shul-ins, chaperoning regional dances and retreats, and helping to connect the youth with the greater Emunah community, as we were always stronger when working together. After my daughter Natanya was born, I was given the opportunity to shift my role to Program Director, working with all of the committees to coordinate shul-wide programming. I was able to make this new position my own, and fill in areas where I saw a need, such as young family programming. During my thirteen years working at Emunah I got married, had two kids, bought a house and became ensconced as not only a staff member, but a true part of the Temple Emunah community. Therefore, as though I was becoming a Bat Mitzvah all over again, after these years I do not wish to disappear; rather I am taking on a new role at the shul – one of congregant, Religious School parent, potential committee member and volunteer and, of course, friend to all. Thank you to everyone who has helped me over the years, whether it was to teach others how to make a lulav tie, making lasagna for a young family dinner, setting up the compost bins for an event, or cooking 300 hamburgers at a BBQ. I have appreciated all of the selflessness of the Temple Emunah members and staff over the years, and I can’t wait until we can be in person again to celebrate together! Jodie Parmer

Adult Education Brought to You by the Adult Education Desk On March 4, just prior to the stay-at-home recommendations, Temple Emunah hosted the Thrope Memorial Program, a screening of the movie, “Screenagers Next Chapter: Uncovering Skills for Stress Resilience.” Over 120 people from all corners of the Lexington community attended. The screening was in collaboration with the Lexington Community Coalition. From now on, we’re going to be known as the Amazingly Agile Adult Education Committee, because immediately following the Thrope Memorial Program, committee members and instructors were able to quickly transition from meeting in person to meeting remotely online, in order to mitigate the spread of COVID-19. For awhile we were in crisis response mode, but now we are settled in to remote-mode as the default. Kudos to Larry Marin, chair of Perek Yomi, for taking on Zoom hosting responsibilities, as well as Dr. Ely Stillman, our instructor for the Talmud Study Group, who has also fearlessly continued teaching using Zoom. Stay tuned to your weekly Shofar email for the dates of the next Perek Yomi and Talmud Study Group meetings. Perek Yomi will continue to meet monthly through the summer months. Please be in touch with Larry Marin (lbmlbm@aol.com) 781-861-7855 for more information about Perek Yomi, and Louis Stuhl (lstuhl@verizon.net) 781-275-5499 for more information about Talmud Study Group. Please bear in mind that folks without a computer can still participate via telephone call. All remote learning is accessible to all with either a phone or computer.

Please stay tuned for Me’ah Select offerings in the summer and fall. My co-chair Terri Swartz Russell and I are in discussion with our Temple Isaiah partners, Wendy Liebow and Rabbi Amy Hertz, as well as Marilyn Stern of Hebrew College, to bring some more intellectually stimulating opportunities to join a learning community. Snaps to Jen Geller who has been offering Virtual Vinyasa Yoga on Tuesdays at 10:30 am. Please contact her (jentgeller@gmail.com) 781-862-6270 for more information. The Bess Ezekiel Rosh H.odesh Group will meet virtually over the summer. To join a safe and friendly group of women at Temple Emunah, contact Leah Sugarman (leahsugarman@ gmail.com) 781-316-1812 and she will send you all the info you need to join. Kudos also go to Toni Stechler for running the Wisdom Project via Zoom. Please be in touch with her (tonihalton@ rcn.com) 781-862-8812 for more information. We are indebted to Jenny Brown (jbrown68@yahoo.com) 781-316-8014 for volunteering to run a Weekly Creative Writing Class to give us a creative outlet to express ourselves during the pandemic. If there is enough interest she will continue after June. And last but not least, huge thanks to our rabbis, Rabbi David Lerner and Rabbi Leora Kling Perkins, for helping the community pivot from in-person to Zoom in a matter of days. Our rabbis were able to seamlessly continue teaching the JTS Ethical Values Lunch and Learn and Dessert and Discussion course, as well as run the Wednesday Morning Study, and Meditation. Furthermore, Rabbi Kling Perkins, resident Zoom expert, continues to teach her Adult B’nei Mitzvah class and her Zoom Niggun Saloon on Friday afternoons. Please check with Ellen Weene (rabbiadmin@templeemunah.org) 781-8610300 for more details and summer dates. As always, feel free to reach out to us with any collaborative ideas.

Religious School / Youth From the Director of Congregational Learning At the time of my writing this column at the end of April, I have no idea where we will be at the time you are reading this – if we will still be convening virtually or in person. The final months of the school year were certainly different from what we expected. I thank the faculty, madrikhim, students and parents for rising to the occasion as we became a virtual community. I am grateful for this community and our Judaism. It has provided much needed structure and touchpoints in a world where it is difficult to gauge time. From the moment we switched to online classes, attendance was high. I had the chance to pop into most sessions. It was wonderful seeing our children’s faces and watching them engage with their teachers. Our teachers and madrikhim went above and beyond learning new skills and creating engaging online lessons for our children, using Google Slides, Kahoot, Quizlet, AnswerGarden, BimBam, etc. Our older students participated in a virtual tour of Beit Hatfutsot in Tel Aviv with a member of their staff and were able to watch “Who Will Write our History” online. Our YADniks and their parents participated in a virtual screening of Nobody Wants Us followed by discussion with the filmmaker Laura SeltzerDuny, an award-winning PBS producer. They were even able to order meals from Rami’s for dinner, which were delivered to their homes. Our youth programs continued to “gather.” We held a very successful virtual retreat the weekend of April 24-26. Thirty youth in grades 4-9 participated. Participants (and some families) ordered Friday night Shabbat meals from Tova’s Catering, which they picked up at Emunah on Friday afternoon. The retreat started late Friday afternoon with an opening session and activity. We then participated in Friday evening services. Following services, participants joined on Zoom for Shabbat dinner, z’mirot and birkat hamazon. On Shabbat morning, participants were invited to join the congregation’s services, which were followed by a Retreat 25/52 Session. Saturday night participants gathered for havdalah and a virtual escape room led by the company Puzzle Breaks. The retreat concluded with a closing session on Sunday morning. Kadima, Jr USY and Sr USY all held virtual events. Jr USYers watched the film Onward. Participants were able to order soda and bags of popcorn, which we purchased from Miriam Cohen

Franzen’s Waltham Popcorn. Popcorn and soda were delivered to participants by the Director of Congregational Learning and Jr. USY advisor. Once delivered, everyone watched the movie, together (apart). Again, at the time of my writing this column, there is a great deal I don’t know. I am not sure if our Religious School will be online this fall or if we will gather in person. I don’t know what the nature of our youth programs will be. What I do know is that we will gather as a school and youth community. And, we will continue to celebrate and learn about our Judaism. On behalf of the staff of our education and youth programs, I wish everyone a relaxing and healthy summer. Me’ir Sherer

Pre-School Billy Dalwin Pre-School (BDPS) Update I must admit that I have found it more challenging to write this bulletin article than any other in my thirty years as the director of the Billy Dalwin Pre-School. That is because as I write this article, the school has been closed for six weeks and we will be closed for a minimum of another nine weeks. What do I miss the most? The daily face-to-face contact with our children, staff and families. We are limited right now in the ways that we can connect with our community and that connection is at the core of the BDPS experience. What do I treasure right now? The very real smiles on our student’s faces we see each time we are with them on Zoom and FaceTime. Admittedly it is not the same as being in our brick and mortar classrooms. And we acknowledge that engaging with such young children on screen is more difficult that online instruction with older students. That said, I have been gratified by the response during our virtual Shabbat Sing programs and the way that we have incorporated on-screen Shabbat Helper experiences for our students. I am also so proud of the time, effort and care that each of our teachers has put into planning for daily Zoom meetings with their classes and the creative strategies that they have used to remain in contact with their kids and families. Different teams have supplemented their Zoom class meetings and weekly Shabbat celebrations in different ways~recording live Zoom Story Times, taking videos of themselves demonstrating crafts, cooking, engaging in backyard nature exploration, yoga, movement and more. We’ve done virtual in-class birthday celebrations and some of our teachers have even done live class drive-bys! I have already acknowledged the commitment and skill of our teachers, for which we are most grateful. But I want to be sure to include our deep appreciation for our families, the BDPS board of directors, the Temple Emunah staff and the Temple Emunah board. Special thanks should also go to the committee who worked tirelessly to secure the PPP loan that enabled us to pay our pre-school staff through the end of their contracts. So many have given time, understanding, expertise and financial resources. The COVID-19 situation requires cooperation, collaboration and faith and we at the BDPS feel blessed to have this incredible support from so many people.

THANK YOU TO JODIE PARMER! Temple Emunah thanks Jodie Parmer for her 13 years of service to the community as Youth Director (2007-2011) and Family Educator and Program Director (2011-2020). We will be honoring Jodie at the Emunah 60 event on May 31 and at Jodie’s final program for Emunah, the June 12 BBQ. Please join us!

Before social distancing: the Pilonim Levanim enjoyed cooking with teacher Deb Zeff.

Our virtual trip to Israel is a highlight at Billy Dalwin PreSchool every year. As we go to print, our staff is busily working on ways to translate our site-visits and daily Israel activities into a fully-virtual trip. While the planning and implementation will be more challenging, it promises to be great fun! One of the positive outcomes of our new situation (we always look for silver linings at BDPS) is our newly redesigned Billy Dalwin Pre-School website. The virtual school format necessitates a streamlined process for families to quickly access our on-screen programming. Now our families can log on to our website to find the links to all daily activities, teachermade videos and suggestions for at-home activities that relate to weekly themes. Thanks to the dedication and skill of Aaron Buckler, BDPS parent, board member and webmaster and our talented BDPS staff, we are adding to our website every day. Our website update will have long-lasting benefits after we return to the building for our current families as well as prospective families who would like to learn more about us. Check us out at www.billydalwinpreschool.com. At this time of year, my bulletin article includes an update about our Kaytana Summer Program. I am always happy to share our enrollment numbers, include the names of our counselors and specialists and provide some details about our weekly themes and special events. But this is an unusual year. As we go to press, we are not yet sure about the status of Kaytana 2020. The original dates of camp were set for Monday, July 6–Friday, August 14. Our dedicated and energetic staff is raring to go and we hope to be able to greet campers when the season begins. As we look ahead to the fall, we are pleased to have so many applications for the 2020-2021 school year and we are eager to get back to an in-school routine. If you have any questions about enrolling in Kaytana 2020 or the Billy Dalwin Pre-School for the 2020-2021 school year, please email me at srossman@templeemunah.org. I will be happy to provide the most up-to-date information. L’shalom, Shelley Rossman, Pre-School Director 781-861-0708; srossman@templeemunah.org

Library Library News T he L ibra r y at Temple Emunah is strangely quiet during our lockdown – no kids coming on Sunday morning to hear a book read to them, no Talmud class meetings, no one taking out books, and no one admiring the beautiful paintings, kindly donated to the Library by our Emunah teacher and artist Sharon Dagan. Installed just before the synagogue closed, each of these paintings incorporates the Hebrew text of one of the Psalms. On Division: A Novel by Goldie Goldbloom, given the Association of Jewish Libraries Fiction Award for 2019, is reviewed at right by Marilyn Tracey. Right now, you would need to order it as an ebook from the Lexington library. Perhaps we will figure out some way to allow members to borrow books. We’ll let you know. In the meantime, you can always access the Encyclopaedia Judaica online, using the password latke. Below is the list of books, all highly recommended, that we received before the lockdown:

Children A Different Kind of Passover, by Linda Leopold Strauss Welcoming Elijah: A Passover Tale with a Tail, by Leslie Newman Youth Someday We Will Fly, by Rachel DeWoskin [365 pages] Adult Fiction Apeirogon: A Novel, by Colum McCann [455 pages] Invented Lives, by Andrea Goldsmith [325 pages]

Adult Non-Fiction Better Than Gold: An Immigrant Family’s First Years in Brooklyn, by Fannie Silver [246 pages] How to Read the Bible, by Marc Zvi Brettler [400 pages] Revelation and Authority: Sinai in Jewish Scripture and Tradition (Anchor Yale Bible Reference Library), by Benjamin D. Sommer [440 pages] A Short History of the Jewish People: From Legendary Times to Modern Statehood, by Raymond P. Scheindlin [288 pages] Torah of the Mind, Torah of the Heart: Divrei Torah of the Talner Rebbe Bereisheis and Shemos, by HaRav Yitzhak (Isadore) Twersky; edited by David Shapiro [199 pages] Under Fire: Diary of an Israeli Commander on the Battlefield, by Lt. Col. Yoni Chetboun [184 pages]

Book Review On Division: A Novel by Goldie Goldbloom What do you say and/or do when you are Surie Eckstein, 57 years old, married, and have had 10 children, 32 grandchildren, and are looking forward to the coming years with your scribe husband, Yidel. You live in the ultra-orthodox community of Williamsburg, NY, where you married at 16, and now you find yourself pregnant…with twins! No, Surie didn’t commit some sin. These are Yidel’s twins. There are no easy answers for Surie. She feels shame, bewilderment, and sorrow, as hovering over all is the death of her beloved son Lipa in the recent past. She keeps the secret of her new pregnancy from everyone, including Yidel, and is able to do this as her once girlish figure has expanded due to her many pregnancies and a delight in her own cooking. She is befriended by Val, the midwife at the clinic, who sees the warm and understanding woman that Surie is and encourages her to help at the clinic and explain the process of childbirth to the other religious women who respond well to her. This also gives Val an opportunity to keep an eye on Surie as her health and that of her unborn babies are at great risk. We experience the love that runs through this family whose members live in close proximity in a three-story house, with Surie’s in-laws on the first floor, her married daughter on the second, and Surie and Yidel and their unmarried children on the third. They watch out for each other and yet many things are left unspoken. The author presents their story with much love and compassion and I found the reading of it to be a very moving and revealing experience – at times difficult and puzzling, but in the end, rewarding. Oh, the title – it refers to Division Street, where they live. [288 pages] Marilyn Tracey

Sisterhood Welcome to Sisterhood 2020 Part 2 I actually didn’t like Part 1, and I’m hoping part 2 is better! This is perhaps the most difficult bulletin article I’ve ever had to write. Most of the time I’m writing in the future with dates and programs already on the calendar. For now, the calendar has turned into this virtual datebook, filled with uncertainty as to whether or not we can come together in person, or still abiding by our virtual standards. Wow have things changed! Many years ago, I said that this is not your grandmother’s Sisterhood. I envisioned Temple Emunah’s Sisterhood to be one structured to fit our diverse membership; reaching out with programming and structure that would be of interest to the many facets of our organization. For the past two years we have developed a partnership with various synagogue groups which have enabled us to increase our programming initiatives. Never did I think that our lives would be turned around by a virus; prohibiting us from meeting in person, having our programs cancelled; and now planning for creative programs in our virtual world. Some say that life is “Groundhog Day” all over again. My day is filled with daily tasks that seem to repeat themselves day after day. I remember the Russell Stover chocolates quote from Forrest Gump... “My mama always said, life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re gonna get.” Although I am thankful that my family is together and we are healthy; the added tasks of daily meals, continuous dishwasher usage, household cleaning and having lots of laundry has become quite repetitive. Our Sisterhood Operating Committee is working on a full calendar for the 2020-2021 calendar year with our first fall event being our Paid-Up Supper in the Sukkah on Thursday, October 8. Currently, we have made some changes to our year-end calendar and have added some fun virtual programs to the late spring and summer calendar. Our first virtual program was Wine from the Home, our donor dinner with guest speaker Rachel Kaddish, who spoke about her book The Weight of Ink. This program was well received. Our action plan for the next few months is to continue to operate in a virtual environment with the following: • Bimah Flower Sponsorship is a vital Sisterhood activity, adding beauty to our synagogue and providing a steady source of funds to help us meet our annual financial obligations. We are continuing our weekly tradition, offering “virtual flowers” to help brighten these days and weeks when we cannot come together in our sanctuary. These flowers can be for any occasion – holiday greetings, yahrzeit or other remembrances, birthdays, anniversaries, or new babies. Or simply to express your appreciation and well wishes. Temple Emunah now offers virtual kiddush sponsorship. Contact Raveetal Celine for details.

10

Flower sponsorship is ordinarily offered at $90. To keep Emunah and spring/summer blooming during this time, we invite your contribution of $36 (or any increment of chai). Please email Sheila Kojm at Bimahflowers@gmail.com to arrange your sponsorship. • Community Brunch: Sunday, June 7 at 10 am Please watch the movie, “Welcome to Kutsher’s: The Last Catskills Resort,” available on Amazon Prime or other sites in preparation for our Brunch discussion. Please have your brunch food ready for our 10 am Zoom discussion of the movie. The link to the program will be sent out as we get closer to the program date.

• Paper Mosaic “Tree of Life” Workshop with artist Mia Schon (date TBA) Join mosaic muralist Mia Schon for a one-hour paper mosaic workshop via Zoom. Participants will learn how to creatively repurpose magazines to design their own unique and beautiful tree of life. Explore this new technique, leaf by leaf, as we celebrate Spring/Summer. This workshop is for all levels. Beginners welcome. All you need is a glue stick, a pair of scissors, a magazine, and you are ready to go! We plan to add other events to our calendar during the summer and we will continue to collaborate with other temple groups for programming ideas. In closing, I hope that everyone continues to stay healthy and that you are able to show your support in any way that you can to our community, your friends and family, as we continue to adapt to the changes in our lives. With fingers crossed, I hope that we will be able to resume a more normal Temple Emunah life in the fall. L’shalom, Janet Goldberg, Sisterhood President janet.goldberg2@verizon.net

Brotherhood / Emunah60 Brotherhood News Shalom H . averim! In March, we had two significant events: the Brotherhood wine sale, and the MOY dinner in honor of Michael Roskind and Adam Samansky for their tireless work on the Temple Emunah security committee. Both of these events were successful, but were absolutely affected by the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. The wine distribution had to be significantly altered to adhere to social distancing guidelines, and the MOY dinner had to rapidly adjust the manner in which food was served. I would like to think Steve Dangel and Scott Lerman for heading up the wine sale effort, and Howard Epstein for leading the MOY celebration. Both of these events also included many other folks to make them successful. I also want to thank Mo Diamant as well as Rabbi Lerner and Rabbi Kling Perkins for their guidance in helping to keep folks safe. Brotherhood’s first ever virtual Shabbat was on Saturday, April 25. By the time you get this bulletin, you will have already heard my d’var Torah on Parashat Tazria-Metzora, which includes discussion of handling diseases and avoiding contamination to/from others in biblical times. My understanding is that in “normal” years this parashah can be a tricky one, but this year it seems remarkably relevant. Special thanks to Scott Lerman for organizing this year’s Brotherhood Shabbat, and to all of the service leaders. Until further notice, the Brotherhood’s next board meetings will be virtual. Email me to get information on joining our next virtual board meetings starting at 9:45 am on May 31 and June 14. David Geisler, Brotherhood President david.geisler@gmail.com

Watch for the date to be announced in the weekly e-newsletter. Emunah60 programs that were planned for April/May are being rescheduled for the Fall mostly after the High Holiday season. We are hoping to be able to come together in person in our Emunah home to celebrate but are making plans to offer some of these programs online if need be. We look forward to celebrating with you! As we move into the next decade for our synagogue we go from strength to strength ‘with faith (emunah) in our future’. Emunah60 co-chairs: Terri Swartz Russell Robin Goldstein Leslie Sherman

Rabbi (Continued from page 1) But something happened. Out of the ashes of the ruins of the Temple, our tradition breathed new life. The exiles returned, rebuilt the Temple, and renewed our ancient home. How did that happen? Because we were able to adapt and change. We were able to see beyond the losses, the destruction, the devastation, and see a new possibility of something unique. And we were blessed with visionary leaders who did not see themselves locked into old paradigms and models. One of those figures was Ezekiel. While we do not know much about him, we believe that he was exiled to Babylon when King Nebuchadnezzar first captured Jerusalem in 597 BCE. It may have been his experiences there that made him realize that Judaism should not be confined to one place. While Jerusalem was precious, Ezekiel realized that it was not the only place that God could be experienced. Before him, it was understood that there was a virtual pillar connecting heaven and earth emanating from the Holy of Holies in the Temple in Jerusalem. The closer one was to that pillar, the closer their experience of the Divine. But Ezekiel realized that God could be felt anywhere, not confined to a specific location. His vision of this is found in the Haftarah we still read on Shavuot. In this strange vision (akin to something we might find in science fiction writing), he sees God’s throne containing wheels and faces and wings. God is no longer relegated to one place; the Divine throne or chariot moves. Ezekiel is aware that God is just as much in Babylonia as in Jerusalem. God is where we allow the Divine presence to enter and be sensed. Most importantly, the flexibility of Ezekiel’s vision allowed Judaism to continue to exist in exile. Little could Ezekiel have imagined that we would later endure almost 2,000 years of exile. And yet, here we are. Today, we are living through a most extraordinary moment in human and Jewish history. How will humans adapt to this moment? What will the future look like? What will survive and what will change? What will Judaism look like as we come out of this pandemic? What will communities of the future look like and what will our shul become? Some of that is not clear as I write, but I know it will take our best minds and ideas to imagine what our future may look

like. This pandemic is accelerating changes that will impact us for years to come. It is already clear that we will meet more through our computers than we could have ever imagined. Our attendance has increased at many of our minyanim and classes. Perhaps in the future, we will hold events that will be hybrids: some people gathering in person and others gathering through virtual means. It is clear that spending hours and hours utilizing this technology is challenging. I read that connecting through the computer through Zoom or FaceTime, while helpful, leaves out much of how the human mind connects. While we read a face if we can see and listen to a voice if we can hear, we do not sense the person’s body, nor do we touch or smell them. Our brains now have to fill in much more information. And that is draining. It is why after Zooming for hours we are much more exhausted than had we met with someone in the same space. That is one of the challenges of this time. That said, we are blessed to have technology that allows us to connect as well as we can these days, albeit imperfectly. Like Ezekiel’s time, this is a tumultuous era. While we do not know exactly what the future will hold, we know that the need for community is even greater than ever. And having a shul, having Temple Emunah to help bring us together in person or virtually or both, is critical. As we approach an uncertain summer, I pray that we will find new and old ways to connect. May you and your families and friends stay safe, healthy, and centered during this upheaval. Please be in touch if there is anything that I, Rabbi Kling Perkins, our staff, or our lay leadership can do for you or your families on any level. I sincerely hope to see you in person soon and if not, please join us for minyan, classes, meditation, yoga, schmoozing or other Zoom activities we will hold. As Ezekiel taught us, we humans and Jews have been able to adapt and re-invent ourselves to new moments, to great challenges. Let us remember that God, spirituality, and our tradition travel with us wherever we go. That was true 2,600 years ago and it is still true today. B’Emunah – with faith in our future, Rabbi David Lerner
