Celebrating Emunah Memories
Making Emunah Your Own As a youngster, I remember running around my shul. Occasionally, I would get into some trouble for being a bit wild, or in the wrong place, or sneaking away into the Kiddush during services. But the overwhelming feeling I had was being comfortable, feeling at home. I loved being in shul. That feeling is central to Emunah. Our students tell me how much they love coming to our Religious School and our youth programs. I love it when I see some of our longtime members schmoozing and laughing as they share over Shabbat Kiddush lunch. And I love it when our youngest members sit with me on the bimah for Adon Olam. Where else outside of our families do we have many generations participating together, interacting with each other? Our synagogue community is a place where we are seen, heard, accepted, and known. We hope that everyone—from the youngest infant to the oldest senior—will experience Emunah as a home away from home. When that happens organically, because you come regularly or your father is the rabbi, it’s easy to feel connected; but often, it does not occur so easily. As much as it is our intention to welcome everyone, perhaps nobody reached out to you. Maybe you were not able to find your “group.” Maybe you never learned Hebrew or the rituals are unfamiliar. Maybe Emunah used to be your home, but you are now feeling disconnected from the community or from Judaism. That is our challenge. How do we make our sacred space a home away from home for more people? How can we create a shul that welcomes people in a time when fewer and fewer people are affiliating with synagogues?
The strength and vitality of the Temple Emunah community are built on a foundation of vision, commitment, and perseverance established decades ago. That heritage was celebrated by about 100 Temple Emunah members and friends on Sunday morning, May 5, at a brunch program entitled “Celebrating Our Emunah Memories.” The event was planned to honor senior members. Speakers on the program were Marvin Antonoff, Miriam Boucher, Phyllis Brick, Joe Nissenbaum, Barbara Palant, and Toni Stechler. Several guests spoke extemporaneously, including David Ezekiel, Barbara Hantman, Sandra Levine, Joel Marcus, and Marvin Menzin. Every speaker shared history and anecdotes, insights and appreciation, with most of the memories focused on the transition years from the mid-1950s through the 1960s. The program was conceived by Fred Ezekiel and underwritten through the Bess Ezekiel Memorial Fund. Joining Fred on the planning committee were Meli Solomon and Rebecca Weintraub, rabbinic intern. Rabbi David Lerner also shared some thoughts from the podium. The overall impact of the individuals’ recollections and reflections was a sense of great fulfillment over the successful outcome of the time, energy, and money invested by Temple Emunah’s early generations. President President’s Message Shalom, Temple Emunah Family, I hope that everyone has been enjoying the spring weather— even though much of it has been wet and rainy! I for one am looking forward to the summer, when hopefully I will be able to say, “I am too hot” at least once. I hope that you will all be able to enjoy the summer with loved ones. Summer for me must have at least a few trips to the beach, and good ice cream—at least twice a week! For the summer, Temple Emunah has a different rhythm: We have Emunah speakers every Shabbat, and the pace is a bit more relaxed. I encourage you to come to services in the summer—it is fun, and you will probably learn something interesting from a fellow congregant. Please see the list of speakers on page 13. I would like to focus this column on something that is very important to me: volunteerism. At Temple Emunah, we count on our members being involved in the life of the synagogue. This includes the ability to take on at least one thing to become passionate about—as it relates to our beloved Temple Emunah. There are so many opportunities to become more involved; some of the ways include: Learning to lead services, read Torah or Haftarah Joining, co-chairing, or chairing a committee Working in the kitchen for kiddush or for an upcoming event • Joining and becoming involved in Sisterhood or Brotherhood • Playing mah jongg • Doing Israeli Dancing • Teaching or taking an adult education class • Volunteering in the Religious School And so many more. From personal experience I can tell you that when you volunteer, you meet new people, make new friends, feel more connected, and feel good about performing a mitzvah. If you would like to get involved and volunteer, and you don’t know where to begin, please reach out to me directly. We can talk about how your talents and strengths can assist the synagogue in numerous ways. I look forward to hearing from many of you soon! May our next few months be filled with sunshine, warmth, happiness, great ice cream, and lots of interest in becoming more involved at Temple Emunah! Shalom, • • •

About Tisha B’Av Tisha B’Av, the Fast of the Ninth of Av, is a day of mourning to commemorate the many tragedies that have befallen the Jewish people, many of which coincidentally have occurred on the ninth of Av. Tisha B’Av primarily commemorates the destruction of the first and second Temples, both of which were destroyed on the ninth of Av (the first by the Babylonians in 586 B.C.E.; the second by the Romans in 70 C.E.). Tisha B’Av is the culmination of a three-week period of increasing mourning, beginning with the fast of the 17 th of Tammuz, which commemorates the first breach in the walls of Jerusalem, before the First Temple was destroyed. On Tisha B’Av, it is appropriate to consider the many other tragedies of the Jewish people, many of which occurred on this day, most notably the expulsion of the Jews from Spain in 1492.
Minyan Story Three Words: Enabling, Community, and Purpose I am a regular at the Temple Emunah evening minyan. Why? I remember well the faux therapeutic “psycho-babble” of the 1970s, when terms such as “enabler” or “co-dependent” were often epithets, terms of derision, and negative judgment. Our obligation to each other was, it was thought, to uplift and assure each other’s individual dignity and honor, expressed in solitude. Though I have not been a mourner since moving to this area, I have been privileged—yes, privileged—to have enabled others to fulfill their Jewish obligations to praise Almighty God in honor and celebration of a lost and precious life. Indeed, I have been an enabler. Proudly so. The daily experience of public prayer in a regular, ritualized quorum—a daily minyan—instills a co-dependent relationship with others. In a short time, it becomes a realm of mutuality and friendship. You are missed when you are absent. And you are recognized when you are present. For me and other retirees, it re-certifies the dignity and honor which work itself brought to life. But retired or not, there is a quiet confirmation of fulfilled duty which is conferred by daily public prayer. (continued on page 13)

We say yasher koah. and todah rabbah to our very talented staff: Lucie Chag, Sally Delucia, Linda Dinjian, Amy Gortler, Ailsa Hermann-Wu, Kate Hermann-Wu, Kayleen Melanaphy, Anna Mikhaylova, Sara Miller, Audrey Sandler, Sarah Scully, Tova Weinronk, and Deb Zeff. We also have appreciated the assistance of Joelle Gunther, Annette Koren, and Nareeluck Stephenson. The efforts of our staff, coupled with the commitment of our parents and board members, have enabled our students to grow, learn, and thrive. This year several Billy Dalwin Pre-School parents and staff members expanded their families with weddings and births; there were several losses as well. As always, our BDPS community stood together, sharing our joy and sustaining us through the difficult moments. Throughout the year, we have loved spending time with Rabbi Lerner and Rabbi Fel. Whether we were amazed by their shofar blowing skills, sharing Shabbat and holidays, listening to stories, snuggling up during the Sh’ma PJ Party, or saying goodbye to Shabbat at our BDPS Family Havdalah, our rabbis made each event meaningful. We began our Staff Days in September with a visit to “Wonder of Learning,” an international exhibit that was hosted this year in Boston. Our full-day exploration of this exhibit served as a jumping-off point for our staff to explore the Reggio Emilia educational philosophy and strategies. Other special moments of this year included expanding Teva Time and other aspects of our nature curriculum, Wiggles & Giggles with Ms. Joyce, our all-school Thanksgiving feast, weekly “Torah Time” with the four-year-old classes, a very successful MLK Day Fundraising Concert with Karen K & the Jitterbugs, our other fundraisers (Zumba, popcorn, & Wilson Farms), BDPS Passover Café, and our expanded virtual Israel trip! Many thanks to those who have supported our Butcherie fundraiser throughout the year. The BDPS Butcherie fundraiser will continue throughout the summer months. Anytime that you shop at the Butcherie in Brookline, please ask them to stamp your register receipt and return the receipt to the Pre-School office. The Pre-School will receive 5% of all cash sales and 3% of all credit card sales. We appreciate your continued support! Limited space remains for the 2019–20 school year. If you or someone you know is interested in enrollment, please contact me. While we put the finishing touches on this year’s Pre-School experience, our Kaytana summer program is just gearing up! With great enrollment, terrific staff, exciting new theme weeks, and “fan fave” specialists, we look forward to a fabulous season. What a wonderful year our Sisterhood has had! Our theme this year of “partnership” enabled us to reach out to our diverse community and offer events of interest to a broad range of people. This month we ran two amazing programs: The first was a Lego event where we built Jerusalem out of Legos. I never thought this would work, but with the help of over 80 people of all ages, we did it! The following week we showed a film entitled, Who Will Write Our History, as part of Yom HaShoah—Holocaust Remembrance Day. Many thanks to Sharon Kalus and Joelle Gunther for bringing this film idea to our community; once again, over 80+ people participated. With the support of the O.C.—“Operating Committee” (which is our Board name) and our continued partnership with other groups and individuals such as Linna Ettinger, Jodie Parmer, and the entire Temple Emunah staff, we have a wonderful calendar planned for next year that includes some new programming and continuing initiatives. Some of our new programs include Community Book Reads with local authors; and an Emunah “H.allah Bake Day.” Continuing programs include three community breakfasts with speakers, our signature Dinner and a Movie events, Craft Night, and our afternoon Café Emunah luncheon/snack events. A full calendar of our programs will be mailed in September as part of our New Year’s Card to the congregation. We hope that you will also consider Sisterhood’s fundraising initiatives—please participate by becoming a member of our organization and helping to make the financial decisions on how we give back to the synagogue. Dues commitment forms will be mailed out by the Temple Emunah office over the summer. Please think about checking the box and joining our Sisterhood next year if you have not yet done so. Our budget for 2019–20 includes an increase of $7500 to the synagogue. Our financial commitments for the upcoming year are: • $5000 to Endowment Campaign • $5000 to Temple Emunah General Operations • $2000 to Religious School Music Program • $1000 to Temple Emunah Youth Program • $4500 to Religious School Special Needs Aides • Purchase Siddurim for Third Grade Students • Sisterhood/Brotherhood will purchase the Etz Hayim for B’nei Mitzvah Students
Shalom H.averim! Thank you to everyone who helped make our Man of the Year event such a success. I want to specially thank Howard Epstein for leading the committee to nominate Rabbi Fel for the honor, and Carl Mikkelsen for making the giant mezuzah gift. Thanks to Steve Dangel for organizing the wine sale and to Scott Lerman for setting up the online interface for wine purchase. June 2 is the NER FMJC (New England Federation of Jewish Men’s Clubs) Second Regional Kosher Chili Cook-Off competition. The competition will take place at Temple Emunah from 1–4 pm. Come to the Cook-Off, support your team Emunah, and enjoy some great chili! For more information, please visit http://www.nerfjmc.org/regional-programs/chilicookoff. The NER FJMC Tour de Shuls is on Sunday, June 23rd, and hosted by Temple Ner Tamid in Peabody. This year’s bike ride will tour the scenic North Shore. There will be rides of 10, 30, 52, or 81 miles. Pick the distance that works for you while raising money that supports the Tikvah special needs program at Camp Ramah of New England. Last year, the NER FJMC donated $10,000 to the Tikvah program through this event. Come have a great ride while supporting an important cause. For more information, please visit http://www.nerfjmc.org/tourdeshuls. This year’s Brotherhood Shabbat will be on Saturday, June 29. We would like as many Brotherhood members as possible to participate in services that morning. We are especially looking for Brotherhood members to read Torah and Haftarah. We’ll also want Brotherhood members to lead services and will honor several Brotherhood members with Aliyot. If you would like to participate in Brotherhood Shabbat, please contact me or Scott Lerman (slerman@gmail.com). Feel free to reach out directly to me to learn more about the Temple Emunah Brotherhood and to learn how to get involved. David Geisler (david.geisler@gmail.com) Temple Emunah Brotherhood President

Hineni / Emunah Connect Jewish Spirituality and Mental Health: What Happens When We Talk About It? Sunday, June 23, 10:30 am – 12 noon The Hineni Connecting Team and Inclusion Committee of Temple Emunah welcome a special guest speaker: Hadassah Margolis, MSW, LICSW, Clinical Social Worker, and Lead Therapist at McLean’s Hospital Spirituality and Mental Health Department. Mental health is often perceived as a character defect, a sign of weakness, or a source of shame. What can we learn from our Jewish traditions and modern psychology to change this narrative in our own community? How does spirituality impact our mental health, as a community and as individuals? Come join us for a morning of learning and hands-on-exploration on this important topic! Sponsored by the Ladle Fund. Free of charge. Light refreshments served. Please contact Linda Skolnik to RSVP or for questions:

What do 17 bereavement bags, 3 healing bags, 3 baby caps, 8 new one-to-one matches, honey jars to be delivered in September for those who had losses in 2018–19 (5779), and 21 volunteers and counting have in common? This is what the HCT has contributed to Emunah since January, 2019. We are proud of this accomplishment—a great deal can be learned about a community through the way people care about each other and through the acts of ḥesed we perform. If you know of someone in need in our community or you would like to join the HCT as a volunteer, please contact me. I’d be happy to welcome you to the team, or listen to your suggestion of someone who may be in need. I’d also like to invite you to an HCT and Ladle Fund sponsored talk on Sunday, June 23, from 10:30 am – 12 noon. Please come and learn from Hadassah Margolis, LICSW, McLean’s Hospital, on an important topic, “Jewish Spirituality and Mental Health: What Happens When We Talk about It?” (See advertisement above.) Emunah’s Hineni Connecting Team is here when needs arise, one connection at a time! Linda Skolnik, HCT Coordinator LRSkolnk@msn.com
Congratulations to all of our college graduates and their families. This is both a joyous and potentially stressful time in the graduate’s and parents’ lives as they are forging a path forward. We want to make everyone aware of a valuable new Temple Emunah resource: The online Mentor Directory developed by the Emunah Connect Committee. Similar to professional networking sites like LinkedIn, this secure, online directory contains the names of Emunah members who are willing to share their knowledge and exchange professional information. In addition to helping with networking, some of the congregants listed in the Directory have agreed to provide mentoring support to recent graduates as they begin new jobs in the weeks and months to come. To access the Directory, enter http://emunahconnect.org into your favorite web browser. You’ll be asked for your Temple Emunah ID and password to get to the Directory. We are always looking to expand the list of directory contacts. If you are not currently listed in the Directory and wish to help other members, please reference the “To Participate” section at http://emunahconnect.org. Please note: the Mentor Directory information is not to be used for Sales, Solicitation, and/or Marketing Purposes. Ken Bruss

year and we will be continuing to work with them for this year’s fundraiser. Many thanks to all that participate; to those who have never sent a friend or relative a jar of honey—this is the year to do so! Another way to support Sisterhood is by sponsoring flowers for Shabbat and holiday services. Our flower chairperson, Sheila Kojm, has done a wonderful job finding flower sponsors. Sheila mentioned to me that this position allows her to “meet new Emunah families, reach out to people she hasn’t seen in a while, and connect with her friends by asking for flower sponsorship. It’s a perfect volunteer position.” These fundraising programs help drive the financial success of our organization and these are just two example of how the entire congregation can help support our Sisterhood. In closing, I continue to state my hope that others will join Sisterhood on our journey—whether as an active participant or a silent partner—and that “You Make It Happen!” for our Sisterhood to be able to go “Above and Beyond.” L’Shalom, Janet Goldberg, Sisterhood President janet.goldberg2@verizon.net

Rabbi Making Emunah Your Own
(continued from page 1)
It is a time of transition for shuls and, certainly, for ours. We are saying goodbye to beloved staff members: Rabbi Michael Fel and Beni Summers, and welcoming a new assistant rabbi: Leora Kling-Perkins. These transitions and others allow us to reflect on what is central to Emunah. As the great 20th century Jewish philosopher, Martin Buber, put it: “all real living is meeting.” It is in the interactions, the deep and meaningful connections that occur between people, in which we experience the true self of the other and our own true self. In his vital book, I-Thou, Buber writes: “In this Between lurks the vital, nourishing experience of human life, the real sacred stuff of existence.” Those moments are so precious to us; they help us develop and nurture deep relationships. From the isolated parent with young children to individuals as they age, these moments heal us from the loneliness of life. Temple Emunah has been at the forefront of fostering the “Between” moments. Having a minyan twice daily connects us with each other, as do our classes and meditation groups. As we eat lunch on Shabbat together, those interactions blossom. And, thanks to Fred Ezekiel, our Ladle Fund, and our themed minyanim, we have more and more opportunities to connect over shared affinities and interests. Each of you has interests, talents, and expertise that you bring to our community. Each of you has activities that you enjoy, new areas you would like explore, and skills you would like to acquire. I would like to invite each of you, everyone at Emunah, to choose one activity (at least one!), group, committee, or event to join, participate in, to be a part of this year. Or start a new group. For example: a book group, dog walking/dog park, family social action project, mom’s night out knitting/ crafts group, game night, or a Mussar (Jewish Ethics) group. Please be in touch over the summer with me, Jodie Parmer, or our amazing lay leaders led by our President, Judy Zola, and let us know how you would like to make the shul your own. What makes our community so wonderful is the connections we have and can make with each other. May this summer and the coming year be a time for deepening our relationships and finding more opportunities for the living that is the essence of life. Kayitz Na’im—Have a great summer, Rabbi David Lerner
PS: Stay Tuned for Summer Programs! PPS: Let me thank Judy Lebow, our wonderful Bulletin editor, who has been editing HaḤodesh for the last 15 years. It has been a pleasure working with her, and her devotion and attention to detail has made this such a fine publication. Todah Rabbah—thank you! As she retired from this work, we will be utilizing this moment to explore the future of our bulletin, PR in general and our website; if you have thoughts or would like to help, please be in touch. Stay tuned!
Minyan Story
(continued from page 5)
And finally, it is uplifting—in a way more powerful than I myself anticipated—to put aside selfish concerns as well as community and national politics and regularly appeal to Almighty God. The text of our daily Amidah channels our emotional appeal to the values and purposes sanctified by our tradition and our history, correcting our penchant to hyperfocus on our private personal agenda. We pray for the national welfare and security of the Jewish People. We freely acknowledge the majesty, power and omnipresence of Ha Kadosh Barukh Hu. And as we pray, we readily celebrate that these same precisely identical prayers are simultaneously being recited by Jews throughout the world and were recited, precisely so, by Jews throughout the millennia. An eternal axis of time meets a boundless axis of space: everywhere and forever. It is a discipline of honor, privilege, and pleasure. Rabbi Clifford E. Librach
