From Rabbi Lerner Walking With God
“Lekh-Lekha – go forth from your land, from the land of your birth, from your father’s house to the land that I will show you,” is the initial divine command issued to Avram/Abram that starts his journey and that of our people. And then Avram goes, he journeys, he walks. Walking is a large part of our tradition. In fact, the Torah opens with God walking through the Garden of Eden before the confrontation with Adam and Eve after they have consumed the forbidden fruit. Just a few chapters later, we learn that their descendant Enoch walked with God. Walking with God is what we are supposed to do as Jews. In Deuteronomy (10:12), we are told “lalekhet b’khol d’rakhav” – to walk in (God’s) paths. And, perhaps most famously, when the prophet Micah asks “what is good? What does Adonai demand of us?” The answer is simple and succinct: “do justice, love goodness and to WALK modestly with your God.” (Micah 6:8) Now, walking with God can be understood to be a metaphor, to walk on a moral or just or kind path or to walk with modesty is not to show off, not to brag about ourselves, but it also works literally. It can literally shape the way we actually move. There is something so powerful about walking. Walking upright is something fairly unique to humans. Usually, we learn (continued on page 18)

Shalom Temple Emunah Family! We are now adjusting to shorter days, longer nights, and colder temperatures. I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving, and I am looking forward to us all celebrating together the bright lights of the Hannukiah. This bulletin article is going to focus on a topic that is vitally important to the sustainability of our community: Fundraising and Development Work. For many of us who have been part of Temple Emunah for a long time, we remember when our dues and some ways and means events covered most of our expenses. We had many volunteers who helped with all of our fundraising efforts. Life was certainly what we might call “simpler” then. It is important to note that revenue from dues does not cover all our expenses (see chart at left). Like all non-profit organizations, fundraising and development work is something that we must focus on all year round. We need to do this because our congregation is very diverse and we want to provide for a wide range of needs, including spiritual, educational, and community-building. In addition, we need to plan for sustainability in both good and bad times, and we need to have funds in our endowment for future needs. In the past, Temple Emunah had an active Ways and Means Committee that organized lots of events that put the “fun” in fundraising. We had art auctions, casino nights, bowling nights, concerts, etc. For the past several years, we have not had any members stepping up to chair or be a member of such a committee. As a result, we have had to rely on other methods. As a synagogue, we really have three seasons of giving • Summer: Dues Commitments • Fall: Kol Nidre/Annual Appeal • Spring: Special events like Emunah 60 Temple Emunah has a history of being a generous congregation. I want to thank each and every one of you for participating as you are able in our fundraising efforts. And equally important, I value all of the volunteer work you do at Temple Emunah – whether you are reading Torah, leading a service, shopping for Wednesday Breakfast, doing landscaping in our new Woodland Garden, helping in the kitchen on Shabbat morning, tutoring our b’nei mitzvah students, joining a committee, or attending a shiva – I thank you for making our community a welcoming place for all. As we enter into 2020, we will be encouraging all members to become more involved, and that includes fundraising. If you have an interest in helping in this area, please reach out to me directly. And please join me and your fellow congregants in all of our exciting events for Emunah 60- starting with our Shabbat Dinner on January 31 and our Sock Hop with Temple Isaiah on Feb. 22. Thank you and Be Well! Judy Zola president@templeemunah.org

Journey of the Soul in the World Beyond: Wisdom from Kabbalah Presented by Guest Speaker Reb Simcha Raphael Saturday, December 7 at 7:30 pm Does Judaism believe in the afterlife? Unequivocally, the answer is yes! Unfortunately, in contemporary Jewish life we have lost touch with traditional Jewish wisdom on the afterlife. In this presentation, we shall explore Judaism’s teachings on life after death, particularly in Kabbalah—Jewish mysticism. Through discussion, story-telling, and study of mystical texts, we shall explore the relevance of these teachings in dealing with the human encounter with death. We shall also discover the connection between Jewish teachings on the afterlife and traditional Jewish death rituals. On Saturday, December 7, Temple Emunah will be welcoming guest scholar Reb Simcha Raphael, who will give a D’var Torah during Shabbat morning services, will lead a discussion after Kiddush, and who will give a talk on Kabbalah in the evening, starting at 7:30 pm. All discussions are free of charge and open to the public. We hope you join these insightful talks!

Minyan Story Minyan Counting Year 5779 In this, our 60th Anniversary year, our members are being honored by the decade of their membership with a special Aliyah during Shabbat services. One member from the decade will offer a few words. The first such speaker was David Geisler, Brotherhood President, who joined Temple Emunah during the decade 2010-2019. He mentioned that one of the reasons he and his wife chose Emunah was because we have a daily minyan, and his wife would be able to say Kaddish on her mother’s yahrzeit. On the one hand, I feel very good when I hear something like that, but, to copy Rabbi Lerner’s use of Tevye’s words, “on the other hand” we have many members who come to minyan when they have yahrzeit, expecting at least nine other people to be there to make the minyan so they can say Kaddish, but they don’t come even one more time to help to make a minyan for someone else. If you have come to minyan to say Kaddish in the past year, these are the people who made it possible by coming at least 10 times in the Minyan Counting year 5779: Mike Ablove Eric Austin Dave Becker Marge Becker Robert Becker Gideon Ben-Horin Estha Blachman Caron Bleich Jacob Bloom Nancy Bloom Lester Blumberg Cindy Bobrow Mark Bobrow Miriam Boucher Phyllis Brick Ken Bruss Lois Bruss Ann Chait Arleen Chase Larry Coblentz Sharon Zirkin Dagan Bruce Dalwin Hannah Delfiner Mo Diamant Alison Dick Mark Druy Howard Epstein M Jane Epstein Rabbi Michael Fel Joe Fox Myrna Fox Bob Frankel Dawny Gershkowitz Mike Gildesgame David Goldberg

Perek Yomi Study Group: Reading the Bible from Start to Finish
Ongoing, meets monthly on Thursdays 8 pm The original Perek Yomi (daily chapter) concept was to read one chapter a day, eventually covering the entire Hebrew Bible. Our group has modified this approach and is proceeding at a more leisurely pace of about 12 chapters per month. The group reads material that goes beyond what is read in the synagogue, to do this in consecutive fashion (as opposed to, say, the haftarot), and to discuss it with peers (not experts). Participants use different translations and bring in material Dec. 12: Creating a Prayer Experience from a variety of sources as well as their own ideas, which Dec. 19: The Music: How to Find, Select, and leads to very insightful discussions. Psalms With Rabbi Lerner: January 5, 12 & 26 Sunday mornings, 9:45 – 11:00 am A treasury of our people’s hopes, pain, and praise, the book of Psalms is one of the most commonly read, but seldom fully understood, books of the Bible. After exploring the language of each psalm, we will attempt to understand its context and meaning more fully. In response to what theological need was it written? How has it been utilized by our tradition? How can it be meaningful to us in the year 5780 (2019-2020)? And how can the psalms inspire us to be more creative in our own personal tefillot (prayers)?

Religious School / Youth Israel and You: Center for Israel Education Program Wednesday, December 11, 6:00-8:15 pm Rich Walter, Vice President of Curriculum and Outreach of the Center for Israel Education (CIE), will educate our seventh through twelfth graders and their parents on the numerous organizations targeting Israel that are vying for our attention. He will engage us in a discussion about how we talk about Israel in today’s world and respond to these organizations. Mr. Walter oversees the education and community-based work of CIE and ISMI (Institute for the Study of Modern Israel), including developing curricula and lesson plans, and sharing strategies for teaching and their implementation. He engages congregations and Jewish communities across the nation with Israel education initiatives. Three of CIE’s primary goals are to promote the ongoing concept that Israel is an integral and essential part of modern Jewish history, to provide students, educators, and life-long learners with materials and trustworthy sources to engage with others about modern Israel and to train students and adults to become literate in the study of modern Israel by understanding the concepts of state-seeking, state-making, and state-keeping.

Religious School / Youth Sisterhood Support of Religious School The relationship between Emunah’s religious school and its Sisterhood is very strong. In addition to providing our students with their siddurim (prayer books), the Sisterhood supports a number of projects and programs that are hallmarks of our religious school, among them our Kumsitz (music program), our Israeli Folk Dance program and our Madrikhim Program. Each month our students learn Israeli Folk Dances and Jewish and Israeli songs. Our Madrikhim Program is a critical component of our synagogue’s religious school. The program is open to teens in grades 8-12. Madrikhim fill many roles in a classroom, from simple tasks such as serving as an extra set of eyes in a large classroom and assisting lead teachers with prep work to more complex needs including prayer practice, text study and community service initiatives. The program benefits both the religious school and the teenagers who participate. The religious school receives much needed support as well as the ability to provide more individualized attention to students. Beyond the educational best practices and the financial value of employing madrikhim over assistant teachers, the madrikhim program is part of the fabric of the religious school and our synagogue. It is about relationships and role modeling that extend beyond the classroom and give our students closer bonds to Judaism and our institution. The religious school community is indebted to our Sisterhood.

Pre-School Billy Dalwin Pre-School (BDPS) & Kaytana Notes In November, Expertise.com evaluated 127 preschools to create a hand-picked list of the seven best preschools in Boston. They scored preschools on more than 25 variables across five categories, analyzed the results and selected Billy Dalwin Pre-School as one of their top picks! As we enter the thirtieth year of the Pre-School we feel especially proud of this recognition and will continue to work toward this standard of excellence as we go from strength to strength. Throughout the year Billy Dalwin Pre-School offers programs especially geared to the interests and abilities of the children in the different age groups that we serve. In this article and in future editions of Ha H.odesh, we will highlight some of those enrichment opportunities. One of the signature programs for our oldest students is Torah Time, an interactive experience that engages children in Torah learning using short plays, songs, flannel board stories and movement activities. Torah Time begins immediately after Simh.at Torah and is held every Friday morning. After the children are introduced to the weekly parasha, I involve them in a conversation that promotes an important message or value in the story and we discuss questions that they have. I am consistently impressed by the level of interest and the depth of the students’ questions and comments. Linna Ettinger, assistant director of the Early Childhood Institute of Hebrew College and former teacher at the BDPS, helped to develop our Torah Time program. Linna also created written materials for parents to help support their children’s learning each week. Linna’s comments continue to reflect our philosophy and purpose. “The goal of Torah Time is not to impose a specific set of beliefs or practices; rather it is to expose our children to the richness of Bible stories and the important values that Torah can teach us. There is always room for broad interpretation and all opinions are respected.” If you would like to watch Torah come alive through the eyes of a four year old, come join us! Call the Pre-School office for the timing. On Tuesday evening, December 3 from 6-7 pm Billy Dalwin Pre-School families and Temple Emunah families with preschool-aged children will gather in the Rubinovitz Social Hall (Social Hall II) for our annual Sh’ma Pajama Party. Our program will include an art project, a bedtime story, a brief discussion about bedtime rituals, and a little learning about the Sh’ma with Rabbi Lerner. RSVP to the Pre-School office at 781-861-0708 so that we can be sure to have enough materials. Our event also includes a mitzvah opportunity: we ask that each family bring a toiletry item, washcloth or face towel with you. Those items will be donated to Second Step, a shelter for moms and kids. In mid-January the BDPS will host the first of three conversations for parents with young children. Each of these conversations will focus on ways to address challenging topics with your children. In January you will hear Samarrah Clayman, social worker and BDPS parent, read her new children’s book, Will Jax Be Home For Thanksgiving? Samarrah wrote this sensitive and beautifully illustrated book, based
12
upon her own family’s experience, to help other families with children who have been diagnosed with a brain tumor or other serious illness. The other two conversations will be held in February and March with dates and topics to be determined. Samarrah and I will co-facilitate all three discussions and I know that her professional training and experience as a mom of young children will add immeasurably to these sessions. We are offering two different times for this session so join us on Wednesday morning, January 22 from 9:15-10:30 or Tuesday evening, January 28 from 7:45-9. Contact the BDPS office to get more information or to RSVP. The Billy Dalwin Pre-School is already receiving applications for the 2020-2021 school year. Limited space is available for the current school year as well. If you would like more information or if you would like to schedule a visit to the Pre-School, please contact the Billy Dalwin Pre-School office at 781 861-0708. If you are interested in information for our Kaytana Summer Program 2021, brochures and applications will be available in January 2021. Sisterhood Our 2019/20 year of Sisterhood is going strong. We had a fabulous Paid-Up Membership supper with over ninety members attending. Many thanks to Rabbi Kling Perkins who led us in discussion about the Sukkot holiday and enjoyed the festive dinner with us. Our PARTNERSHIP theme is working well. We are so happy that Sisterhood can partner with so many committees. We have many events in the future such as co-sponsoring initiatives with Adult Education, Family Education, the Religious School, the Membership Committee and the 55+ community. Our ability to provide financial support for these have helped Sisterhood to increase our participation while reaching out to more people in our diverse temple population. In November we had our signature dinner and a movie program featuring the film, “Cuba’s Forgotten Jewels”, a documentary of the Jews of Cuba. Many thanks to Joelle Gunther and all who helped make this event so successful. It’s wonderful when we fill a room with 130 guests who all walk away with such a wonderful feeling. On December 15 we will be having our second Community Breakfast Program with guest speaker Joni Schockett, who will speak on the topic “Welcome to America – and Thanks for Bringing the Bagels!” The following day, December 16, we have a Sisterhood Holiday Craft Night and dinner. Looking ahead to January/February 2020, make sure to Save the Date for our Dinner and a Movie (1/26/20); Mitzvah Day (2/2/20) where we will work with the religious school students in making fleece blankets to be delivered to Children’s Hospital, and our new Challah-day Baking Event (2/9/20). Finally, please also save the date of Sunday, March 22, for our Torah Fund brunch. Every year our Sisterhood honors a member of our organization who through her contributions has been instrumental to our Sisterhood and our temple. This honor comes with the special title “Light of Torah.” I am pleased to announce that our 2020 Light of Torah is Marcy Lidman. Marcy will be honored at our Torah Fund Brunch that morning. Our Sisterhood is a major contributor to the Torah Fund which is part of Women’s League for Conservative Judaism. This fund provides financial support to students at the Jewish Theological Seminary, Ziegler School of Rabbinic Studies, Schechter Institute of Jewish Studies, Seminario Rabinico Latinoamericano, and the Zacharias Frankel College. Each year our Sisterhood is given a goal, and last year we raised over $7,500 for this scholarship fund. After the new year, our Sisterhood will be promoting this event and ways that you can help honor Marcy as our Light of Torah.
In closing, I am thinking of the dates on my calendar that will keep me busy throughout the remainder of the year and into 2020. I hope you will mark your calendar for our wonderful Sisterhood programs. In the spirit of the holiday season and the upcoming new year, I wish everyone a happy and healthy 2020 and I look forward to seeing you at our Sisterhood programs. Brotherhood Brotherhood News Shalom H . averim! I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone who helped make all of the Brotherhood’s efforts this High Holy Day season a success. For the Yizkor books, thanks to Howard Reubenstein and Paul Skerker for handling the printing and donations. Also, a thanks to everyone who came to help disassemble the books from last year and assemble the books for this year. Thank you to everyone who volunteered to serve as ushers during High Holy Day services. Thank you to Mo Diamant and Ed Willins for all of their hard work coordinating the ushers. A special thanks to Adam Samansky and Michael Roskind for all of their tireless efforts, especially during the High Holy Days. Thank you to everyone who came to help us put up, decorate, and take down the Garber Sukkah this year. Our sukkah even survived the intense wind and rain, due to its strong construction, and extra care taken by Mo Diamant and others. Last, but certainly not least, thank you to everyone who came to the Keeper of the Flame event on November 3 at Temple Israel in Sharon to help us honor Larry Marin. Thank you to Mo Diamant and everyone at the New England Region FJMC for helping to organize everything, and thank you to all who volunteered to help at the event. On the Sunday mornings of December 8, 15 and 22, we will be setting up and improving the giant Hanukkiyah. It takes a few hands to set up a 10’ tall Hanukkiyah, so any help is greatly appreciated. Contact Scott Lerman or me for more information. After the busy High Holy Day season, the Brotherhood’s next big event will be our annual Brew Fest on Sunday, December 15. We’ll start with a Brotherhood board meeting, which everyone is invited to attend. We’ll also have our Winter Meeting for our softball teams, so anyone who is interested in playing in the spring should join us. We’ll spend the rest of the afternoon with food, beer (brewing and tasting), and football. More details will be available soon. See you there! Looking to 2020, the World Wide Wrap and Supper Bowl Party will both be on Sunday, February 2, and the Passover Wine Sale and Man of the Year Dinner will be on Sunday, March 8. Have you been wondering what the Brotherhood is all about? Are you curious about attending Brotherhood events? Would you like to learn more? Feel free to reach out! Happy Winter! Library Here are some of our latest additions to the Library:
Library News Did you know that our Library has an amazing collection of Yizkor books, memorial books that record the life and death of eastern European towns after the Holocaust? The names of those lost are listed, and descriptions and photographs of their daily life serve to keep their memory alive. They were originally compiled by survivors, often written in Yiddish and Hebrew (and usually published in Israel in the 1950s and 1960s). Emunah member Joel Alpert, as project coordinator for the Yizkor-Books-in-Print Project, has been instrumental in getting these books trans-lated into English, edited and published, as part of the JewishGen organization. Joel has generously donated a number of these valuable memorial books to the Emunah Library. The most recent ones are for Brody (Ukraine), Dvinsk (Latvia), Gostynin (Poland), and Nowy-Dwor (Poland). At right is a listing of the other towns in our collection. They are all shelved in the Rubenstein Wing of the Library, along with many older books about the Holocaust. All of them are available to be borrowed. Todah Rabah, Joel! We also want to thank longtime members Dave and Marge Becker for donating a copy of their son’s latest book G-d & Man: The Ultimate Plan. Richard attended our Hebrew School, and after a number of career and life changes, he has made aliyah to Israel. Now using his Hebrew name, Rafael Becker has written a guide to an 18th-century Italian philosopher’s work, Derech HaShem. The author, Rabbi Moshe Chaim Luzzatto, is known as Ramchal. The Jewish community throughout the world, including here in the United States, is facing a scary resurgence of antisemitism, from both the left and the right. We have two important new books on this issue, including Deborah Lipstadt’s book, reviewed on next page by Marilyn Tracey, and How to Fight Anti-Semitism, by Bari Weiss. These books will help you to discuss the topic with left- and right-wing opponents in an informed and reasonable way, and we highly recommend them. Marilyn is sending them to her grandson in college. The largest category of books in our Children’s collection is about Hanukkah. We recommend sharing a number of them with your children including the ever-popular Hershel and the Hanukkah Goblins; The Chanukkah Guest; The Allof-a-Kind Family Hanukkah; The Story of Hanukkah (by David Adler); Latke, the Lucky Dog; Oskar and the Eight Blessings; Grover’s Eight Nights of Lights (Sesame Street); and Yitzi and the Giant Menorah. Many of these are award-winning books. Want to do a mitzvah? We need volunteers to help keep the Library running smoothly. Please contact Toni (email below) or Marci Hopkins (mdyhopkins@gmail.com) if you can help.

Rabbi (Continued from page 1) it at a young age and hope it will remain with us throughout our lives. Walking is healthy. Science teaches us that walking every day improves our health – go on a walk after a meal or when you are feeling stressed to help calm yourself. Walking can help you heal – after surgery, we are told to try to walk as soon as possible to accelerate our recovery. Walking is also embedded in our tradition. Traditionally, the Shabbat Queen was welcomed by walking outside to escort her into the Friday night service (now, we usually just stand and turn around) and at the end of Shabbat, there is a custom to have a melaveh malkah (accompanying the Queen) – an additional meal or celebration to escort (from the verb – lelavot, to accompany) the Shabbat Queen back home. Walking is found in our lifecycle events. At the brit, the baby is walked into the room held by the kvatter/in. At the wedding, there is often a walking wedding procession and the partners walk around each other seven times, creating a sacred circle of holiness. And finally, at the end of life, we mourn by walking together. In fact, the word for a funeral in Hebrew is “levayah” from the word “lelavot,” which means “to accompany, to escort or to walk.” Just as the deceased walked with us during her or his lifetime, we walk with them at the end of theirs. There is something so viscerally powerful about this walking – soft steps taken together, ushered by the ancient words of the Psalmist for support. This walking is unlike any other. Ritualized walking occurs after the interment as well when the mourners are consoled between the two lines of family and friends. This tunnel of compassion helps to sustain them at this vulnerable time. And then the walking is transformed at the end of the mourning period. When shiva concludes, we lift the mourner up from this period, by going for...a walk. Normally, we walk around the block, around the neighborhood or around one’s
home. I have walked with mourners on the last morning of shiva, leaving their home to process through their street or sometimes, walking around the shul. That walk contains so much – the sadness of the loss and the hope for the ability to heal and move forward. Post-shiva walking with another person is intimate and bonding, especially at that moment. This notion of walking with someone to support them can be so meaningful and transformational, deepening a relationship when that support is so desperately needed. Walking or even standing with someone conveys love in such a powerful manner. Along this vein, I want to offer two ideas that may be helpful for our community. First, a custom that is derived from the mourning rituals of walking with someone is to stand with the mourner for Kaddish. In our community where our practice is to have only the mourners stand and recite the Mourner’s Kaddish, it may be nice for spouses and children to stand with their loved ones as they recite these sacred words. I have seen spouses doing this with their partners as well as children standing with their parents. While the other family members do not recite the words, their standing becomes a moment of love, solidarity, and intense support. It is a simple, symbolic act that says “I stand with you at this moment.” On a less somber note, standing when your parent, partner or grandparent has an aliyah is a Sephardic practice. Again, this may be another custom that is worthy of consideration. Here, the standing supports the family bond in a happy moment, teaching respect and building connection. How do we walk with God? By walking with humility and offering support for those who need it most. By “being there” for them in times of transition as they move from one stage of life to the next. By creating and reinforcing bonds of love and friendship. Rabbi David Lerner
On a brisk and beautiful November Sunday, over 100 Emunah-ites gathered on our new courtyard for our first annual “Blessing the Animals” We sang “Rise and Shine” (in honor of the Torah Reading - Parashat Noah, which was the day before), we discussed the Jewish perspective on treating animals with kindness and introduced our furry friends. We also remembered some pets who had passed away. Thank you to everyone for making this such a wonderful event and to Geoff Jarbeau who was our resident veterinarian. If you missed it, join us next year!

Family Table Kol HaKavod – A Job Well Done! We are most grateful for the support and contributions of many bags of rice and boxes of crackers on Kol Nidre. The congregation was most generous and the people receiving our donations from Jewish Family & Children’s Services Family Table benefited from your bringing food on Kol Nidre. A very loud shout out to the Franzen Family (Miriam and Kurt) for collecting all the food from the temple and bringing it to JF&CS for their October 27th distribution. It was a huge task to take all of the boxes and bags from the overflowing baskets and load all of the food into their cars. The Franzens are amazing supporters of Family Table and we are so appreciative of their ongoing contributions. We continue to need small bags of brown rice and small boxes of whole wheat crackers for the next distribution. If you would like to participate in the packing of food and delivery please contact Lisa Katz Lkatz@jfcsboston.org, 781-693-5593 at JF&CS. You will need to have a current CORI application in order to deliver food directly to families.
the Social Action Committee- Family Table- we will purchase the food for you. We welcome cash donations, food donations and of course your donated time to enable those less fortunate than we are to benefit from healthy foods. According to a recent email from JF&CS’s Family Table we learned that they receive fresh produce from the Greater Boston Food Bank and during the growing season, they partner with the Boston Area Gleaners (BAG), a local rescue organization, to receive the excess bounty of nearby farms. In fact, the Jewish community provides more than 60% of the food Family Table distributes.
If you would like to donate gluten free pasta, crackers, cereal, soy, rice or almond milk, peanut butter without sugar and nut free butters feel free to drop off these items and we The following are upcoming dates for packing and deliverwill deliver them too. They would be in addition to our regular ing food: December 15, January 2, February 23, March 15, April monthly commitment of rice and crackers. 5, May 10, June 7 and July 12.
