Date: June 4, 2020 Re: About the Tragic Death of George Floyd It has been a while where we were puzzled with finding appropriate wording to describe how we have truly felt about the murder of George Floyd. We definitely feel anger, sadness, desperation but we did not want this statement to be only about raging police brutality, criticizing politics and hoping that this will be the last one. Instead, we want to show that we desire to play a meaningful part in helping to move our country and culture forward. Despite being disturbed to our cores by the killing of George Floyd, we want to help people find a way to contribute to sustaining solutions, finally deal with the decades of racism and inequality and, simply live in a world with peace and harmony. There is a lot of hurt in the world today. While we were expecting to get back to our lives, we should use this time to reflect on ourselves how we can contribute to collective effort to change the normalcy around racism that is deeply rooted in the culture. We do not believe in violence, rage, looting and unlawful acts will empower our stand against injustice. It will only provide more excuses and “scapegoats” for those who refuse to acknowledge the need for change. All peaceful protests are an expression of long-lasting pain, anger and misperception of African American Community in general so at Sema Foundation, we stand with those who are striving for a real change, focusing on the humanity in us all and giving voice to the despair and fear that so many feels. We stand with those against racism, injustice, and inequality. On our part, as a community organization, we will continue to organize events, educational seminars and collaborate with organizations to educate our society. We will continue to host programs that celebrates diversity, challenges our thinking, and offers insights into ways to support this movement and create real change. We know this is only a small step, but it’s a step in the right direction. We’re not sure if all our efforts will be sufficient, but we are committed to learn more We send our most sincere condolences to Mr. Floyd’s family and we will continue to pray and fight for the justice that we are all promised and entitled to as Americans and humanity as a whole.
