Nascido na freguesia de Ossela, Ferreira de Castro foi um dos maiores escritores da literatura portuguesa do século XX.

Dali partiu, ainda criança, para o Brasil com uma mala cheia de sonhos e a vontade de lutar por uma vida melhor. O seu primeiro romance, “Criminoso por Ambição”, foi escrito aos 14 anos. A sua passagem pelo Brasil foi uma experiência inesquecível. Mais tarde regressou a Portugal tornando-se num dos escritores portugueses mais traduzidos. Chegou a ser indicado para o Prémio Nobel da Literatura.
Em Ossela, a sua casa foi transformada em museu estando ali concentradas as memórias de infância do escritor. Na casa humilde onde nasceu são visíveis alguns utensílios agrícolas da época, a cozinha, a sala e o seu quarto, onde se destaca a mala e os sapatos que usou em 1939 na volta que realizou ao mundo. Do outro lado da rua, situa-se a biblioteca de Ossela, importante repositório da sua obra, da qual sobressaem as primeiras edições dos seus livros mais conhecidos “A Selva” e “Emigrante”.
Ferreira de Castro, one of the most representative writers in Portuguese Literature of the 20th century, was born in the borough of Ossela. As a child, he left his home village and emigrated to Brazil. All he carried with him was a bag full of dreams and the will to fight for a better life. He wrote his first book “Criminoso por Ambição” at the age of 14. His stay in Brazil was unforgettable. He returned to Portugal, becoming one of the most translated Portuguese writers. He was even nominated for the Nobel Prize of literature. At Ossela, his house was turned into a museum, where all his childhood memories are kept. At the humble house where he was born it’s possible to see farming tools of the time, the kitchen, the living-room and his bedroom. Displayed in his bedroom, are the bag and the shoes he wore in 1939 when he did his trip around the world. Right across the street built by Ferreira de Castro there is the local library, an important repository of his work, with special relevance to the first editions of his most famous books “The jungle” and “Emigrant”.
