Young designers embark on experiential journey with AYDA 2021 Another exciting year beckons for budding architects and interior designers as they embark on an experiential journey with the Asia Young Designers Awards (AYDA 2021) that has returned for the 14th year running. Billed the premier and leading young architectural and interior design awards, AYDA was organised by Nippon Paint Malaysia in 2008 with the vision to nurture the next generation of young designers through cross-learning experience and networking with industry professionals, while providing them a platform to showcase their work and realize their fullest potential. This year’s theme “FORWARD: Amplifying Empathy Through Design” aims to challenge the next generation of architects and interior designers to grow beyond designing one-dimensional spaces and to incorporate the evolving demands of consumers, while factoring in critical factors such as sustainability and environmental care. City Expo Malaysia 2021 sets to drive deep conversations on what makes for great cities The City Expo Malaysia (CEM) 2021 sets to drive the debate around our cities, inviting various stakeholders to share their ideas and solutions to combat the challenges brought about by urbanisation and the pandemic. CEM 2021 is jointly organised by the Malaysian Institute of Planners (MIP) and Nextdor Property Communications, with the support of Ministry of Housing and Local Government (KPKT), PLANMalaysia (Federal Department of Town and Country Planning), and the Commonwealth Association of Planners (CAP). Hosted on a fully virtual platform from 8 November to 8 December 2021, the expo will have a packed programme comprising talks and conferences as well as a month-long exhibition with virtual booths and various side events. CEM 2021 aims to shine a spotlight on the role of urban planners, as represented by those in the Malaysian Institute of Planners in the country, and their counterparts from the region. “The esteemed profession of planning helps us to chart a course for our cities in the delicate balance between functional efficiency and social equity. In this regard, few entities have done more to continuously advance collective knowledge, shared experience, and cooperation in Malaysia than the Malaysian Institute of Planners,” said Datuk Seri Maimunah Mohd Sharif, Executive Director of the United

Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), during the soft launch of CEM 2021 held on 25 August 2021. In her speech, Maimunah highlighted that Malaysia is one of the most urbanised countries in Asia, experiencing significant cumulative growth in the last two decades transforming the country from 34% urban in 1980 with estimates of growing to 80% by 2030. Therefore, this year is a good time for a critical review of the business of town planning as formal town planning in Malaysia hits its first century. “As planners and more broadly a planning community, we strive to help others make sense of their socio-political environments by offering better, clearer and stronger conceptions of what lies ahead. In turn, our predictive work and recommendations give cause to new and more progressive city policy and legislation,” she added. Mr Imran Clyde, Director of City Expo Malaysia, said the experience with the pandemic has shown that a lot more thought needs to be put in to ensure our cities and townships become truly liveable. “This means, there will be a lot of eyeballs on CEM 2021 as people try to reimagine a post-pandemic urban environment. PM calls to redefine sustainability at Virtual IGEM 2021 The International Greentech & Eco Products Exhibition & Conference Malaysia (IGEM) returns for its 12th edition. It is South East Asia’s largest trade event for green technologies and ecosolutions. Organised by the Ministry of Environment and Water (KASA) and co-organised by the Malaysian Green Technology and Climate Change Centre (MGTC), IGEM 2021 is being held virtually for the second consecutive year on www.virtual.igem.my. Themed “Redefining Sustainability”, the prominent event expects 300 exhibitor booths from 50 countries and 30,000 registered visitors over the six-month duration, and sets to achieve a target of RM5 billion in business leads to spur the country’s green economy. IGEM 2021 was officiated by Malaysia’s Prime Minister YAB Tan Sri Dato’ Haji Muhyiddin Bin Haji Mohd Yassin on 22 July 2021. In his virtual keynote address, YAB Tan Sri Dato’ Haji Muhyiddin said, “The unprecedented and rapid changes due to the pandemic has indeed forced us to continuously realign the sustainability aspect that has impacted many parts of our lives. As we wade through the pandemic, I would like to re-emphasize that we should not lose sight of the challenges that climate change poses. Climate change is showing signs that could have long-lasting impact and threats on social well-being, economic development and global health.” “Redefining Sustainability” has been picked as the theme for IGEM 2021 where the focus is on climate change and green technology amid addressing the impacts of COVID-19 pandemic. We need to find ways collectively to pursue economic and social well-being in an environmental-friendly manner. MRT Corp invites city stakeholders to drive transformation of rail Rail transit should act as a ‘backhaul’ for public transportation, providing integrated links for multimodal transport options especially in first and last mile connectivity, and this needs to be a critical focus area especially amongst town planners, local authorities and other city stakeholders, said MRT Corporation Chief Executive Officer Datuk Mohd Zarif Mohd Hashim. During his talk at the City Expo Malaysia’s (CEM 2021) Star Talk series held on 24 September 2021, Datuk Zarif said the MRT Line 3 would complete the transport masterplan for the Klang Valley, connecting the eight different radial lines, delivering passengers in a more efficient manner. The CEM Star Talk, which acts as a lead-up to the City Expo Malaysia on 8 November 2021, is a series of conversations with city leaders and key stakeholders to share ideas and solutions on pressing issues affecting cities. CEM 2021 is jointly orgnised by the Malaysian Institute of Planners (MIP) and Nextdor Property Communications. Datuk Zarif said: “There is a strategy to transform public transportation and it relies on the liberalisation of information and engagement with stakeholders to build a digital ecosystem around transportation. This could in the form of apps and artificial intelligence engines to make transportation more efficient, cheaper and better”. such as town planners, local authorities and even property developers to adopt a more forward-thinking approach to support Greater Kuala Lumpur’s transportation infrastructure. This starts from greater collaboration at the planning stages in local structure plans, the implementation of transportation masterplans and management of connectivity assets such as walkways and bus stops. Financing was also an important consideration. He said, “Funding for public transport infrastructure cannot be solely the government’s responsibility. There needs to be a symbiotic relationship with city stakeholders especially those who have benefited from value capture from public transportation infrastructure. MRT Corp has thus developed a hybrid approach to help achieve this”. Zarif added that by taking a people-first approach, focus should also be given to public convenience as first and last mile connectivity is important and should integrate or feed into metro rail lines. This includes looking at improvements to walkability, bus networks, access to car-sharing, ride-hailing and even private mobility vehicles (PMVs). The MRT Line 3 is a proposed circle rail transit line that includes a subway line in the Klang Valley area. Once it is completed, the 52.31km rail line with 33 stations would connect to the other rail networks, providing an almost seamless opportunity for intra and intercity travel.

MTC gives RM1.3 million for timber industry’s vaccination programme The Malaysian Timber Council (MTC) has allocated RM1.3 million to expedite mass vaccination among workers from the timberbased sector through the industrial vaccination programme. The Council, which has set up its vaccination centre in Olak Lempit, Banting, Selangor, for this purpose and has successfully vaccinated 10,005 workers for the first dose as of 16 August 2021. The Vaccination Programme for the Agricommodity Sector (VACOMS) at PPVIN@Olak Lempit began vaccinating factory workers on 28 July 2021 and will cease operations on 6 September 2021. The Council will engage with the respective timber associations or companies in other states to provide the subsidies they need to enable mass vaccination to curb workplace clusters in factories. MTC Chief Executive Officer Tuan Muhtar Suhaili said: “COVID-19 is going to become an endemic and we need to create workplaces that are safe for us to operate in for business continuity. MTC will provide a subsidy of RM30 per vaccine for each factory worker.” The timber industry is extremely collective in its measures towards mass vaccination, as it had suffered losses amounting to RM60 million daily in June due to the lockdowns. directive, which stipulates the percentage of work force in a factory to be dependent on the number of vaccinated employees, business owners are proactively ensuring that their workers get vaccinated as quickly as possible. The Muar Furniture Association (MFA) is conducting a similar vaccination programme where an estimated 30,000 factory workers will be vaccinated.

IM Group’s foundation chair exhibits sculptures of unity to give global hope and support children in need Malaysian-born artist Alice Chang Guerra, owner of Lai Lai Art Studio and Chair of IM GROUP Foundation, has revealed her latest artwork and initiative: “The Three Graces of Malaysia” to coincide with Malaysia’s 64th year of independence and to raise funds for children in need. The three two-metre-high sculptures, currently on show in an exhibition – with fellow artist Datuk Luciano Mirri at Kuala Lumpur’s Four Points Hotel by Sheraton – are currently on sale. All proceeds will go through IM GROUP Foundation, which is currently fundraising for autistic children in Malaysia. Inspired by Antonio Canova’s neoclassical 19th century marble sculpture, “The Three Graces”, Guerra explained she was attracted to the story of the three daughters of Zeus, who were professed to be able to grant humanity with gifts: Euphrosyne (mirth), Aglaia (elegance) and Thalia (youth and beauty). “I felt a connection that evolved strongly in me to produce a very personal work as a woman; as a sister, daughter and mother – able to grant more than mirth, elegance and beauty but to represent strength, courage and determination – the mother of a nation, if not the world, who carries the generations to come,” specified Guerra. “The 3 Graces of Malaysia – Siti, Ah Lian and Shanti – represent the women of our nation tied by the harmony, cultural and racial diversity of our country.” The art works, made from cement and recycled pieces of broken ceramics, symbolically carry a powerful message of global

hope, as Alice explained “…the pandemic has had a tremendous impact on everyone at a psychological and professional level. NEA 2021 recognises outstanding achievements in sustainable energy The National Energy Awards (NEA) returns for the fourth consecutive year to recognise 29 local industry players with exceptional achievements in the field of renewable energy (RE) and energy efficiency (EE). The winners of NEA 2021 were announced virtually by the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources (KeTSA) on 11 September 2021. Eight organisations were selected as winners for Best Practices in Energy Management, six for Energy Efficient Buildings, and 11 for Best Renewable Energy Projects. In addition, three special awards were given for Best Practices in Energy Performance Contracting, Best Sustainable Practices by Institutions of Higher Learning, and Best Sustainable Financing. The winners of NEA 2021 will represent Malaysia at the ASEAN Energy Awards (AEA) 2021, Southeast Asia’s highest award for excellence in the field of energy. The recipients of AEA 2021 will be announced in mid-September 2021, in conjunction with the 39th ASEAN Ministers on Energy Meeting (AMEM). In his address, Datuk Seri Takiyuddin said, “NEA was launched in 2018 as a strategic endeavour to recognise the achievements and best practices of local entities, in embracing sustainable energy initiatives as an effort to reduce the carbon footprints within the energy sector. The Circulate Initiative launches open-sourced plastic waste climate impact calculator The Circulate Initiative, a non-profit organization committed to solving the ocean plastic pollution challenge, has announced on 8 September 2021 the launch of PLACES – Plastic Lifecycle Assessment Calculator for the Environment and Society, the first tool of its kind offering the ability to assess the climate impact of current waste management practices in Asia, from open burning to recycling. The Circulate Initiative developed the tool based on the findings of a paper published by Circulate Capital and the Singapore Institute of Manufacturing Technology (SIMTech), a unit of Singapore’s Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR). The Circulate Initiative’s open-sourced prototype calculator tracks the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reductions, energy and water savings of waste management and recycling solutions that prevent plastic pollution in India and Indonesia. “Our ambition for PLACES is to be a catalyst for investment and positive change, and serve as the first port of call for stakeholders looking to scale solutions that prevent plastic pollution in emerging countries for the benefit of the environment, society and economy. This innovative calculator supplies the critical data needed by decision-makers to showcase how improved waste management and plastic recycling practices contribute to fighting climate change,” said Ellen Martin, Director of Impact and Insights at The Circulate Initiative.

With mounting pressure to limit global warming to 1.5°C as urged in the 2021 Sixth Assessment Report from the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, countries are calling on emerging economies like India and Indonesia to drastically curb emissions. Plastic waste pollution contributes to climate change, while transitioning to a circular economy can reduce GHG emissions globally by 10 billion tonnes a year by 2050. Using the underlying analysis behind the tool, Circulate Capital found almost 150 million tonnes of GHG would be avoided if 100% of plastic leakage in India and Indonesia was prevented by 20301. This is equivalent to shutting down 40 coal-fired power plants. To calculate the impacts of recycling, users simply input factors including plastic type, tonnes of plastic waste diverted and end-of-life fates for either India or Indonesia. PLACES is based on assumptions made with the data available on the current waste management systems in India and in Indonesia, and the model is designed to be refined as more up-to-date data becomes available. Construction consulting firms allowed to operate in Phase 1 & 2 of National Recovery Plan (PPN)

Construction sector consulting companies in Phase 1 and Phase 2 of the National Recovery Plan (PPN) are allowed to resume operations from 24 August 2021. The Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB), in a statement dated 25 August 2021, said the permission applies for consulting services like architecture, engineering, quantity surveying and other related services. However, these companies must comply with the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) as well as other applicable conditions, regulations and SOPs that are currently in force. The permission to resume operations is only given to consulting companies located in areas under Phase 1 and Phase 2 of the PPN. These companies can submit their applications through the Ministry of International Trade and Industry’s (MITI) COVID-19 Intelligent Management System (CIMS) at https://notification.miti.gov.my/, under the Construction cluster by choosing among the sectors listed below: • Sector 27: Professional or consultancy services related to the types of work permitted; • Sector 32: Office operations; • Sector 33: Other construction works/activities not listed in Sector 1-32. This sector is allowed to operate based on the declaration of employee vaccination rates. All industry players who have been approved to resume operations must comply with the SOPs. CIDB Malaysia said it has the authority to shut down construction sites found to be in breach of the provisions under Act 520 or any other laws, including Act 342 (Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act 1988) and Act 446 (Workers’ Minimum Standards of Housing and Amenities Act 1990). 14 September-October 2021 | www.b-i.biz

Solarvest inks 50MW solar power purchase deal with TNB Clean energy specialist, Solarvest Holdings Berhad has signed power purchase agreements (PPA) with Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) for the sale of electricity from its three shortlisted largescale solar (LSS) plants under the LSS@Mentari programme. The signing of the contract officiates the 21-year solar electricity deal, whereby TNB will be the off-taker of the electricity generated by Solarvest’s LSS plants across two states with a cumulative capacity of 50 megawatts (MW). Two of the solar farms will be based in Manjung, Perak with capacities of 25MW and 12MW respectively, followed by a 13MW solar farm to be constructed in Kuala Selangor. Solarvest will bankroll the development projects with a combination of funds raised from corporate exercise and external borrowings. Upon the signing of the PPA, the Group plans to obtain financing and the necessary approvals by the end of 2021. Construction activities for the solar plants are expected to commence in early 2022. The three plants are scheduled to begin commercial operation between 2022 and 2023. Group Chief Executive Officer of Solarvest, Mr Davis Chong Chun Shiong said: “Upon the commencement of operations, the positive contribution from these solar plants will enlarge our recurring earnings stream from financial year end 2023 onwards, complementing our project-based business model. National Bamboo Industry Development Action Plan 2021-2030 launched to boost exports The National Bamboo Industry Development Action Plan 2021-2030 has been launched as a continuation of the 2011-2020 plan to boost the exports of Malaysia’s bamboo and bamboo-based products. The action plan, launched in conjunction of the World Bamboo Day 2021 (WBD 2021), serves to strengthen Malaysia’s direction as a producer of bamboo and bamboo -based products for export to China, Indonesia, Thailand and around the world. Bamboo is an important non-wood resource that also contributes to the country’s export earnings. There are about 70 species of bamboo in Malaysia, of which 45 grow naturally in primary and secondary forests. In terms of cultivation distribution, 31% of bamboo crops are found in Peninsular Malaysia with an area of 229,123 hectares, 45% in Sarawak and 24% in Sabah. The export value of bamboo products in 2020 is RM8.28 million; the recorded number is relatively small when compared with the size of the global bamboo market. Currently, there are 577 entrepreneurs in the bamboo-based industry covering bamboo boards, furniture, construction, textiles, plantations, food and charcoal as well as handicrafts. Most of them are small and medium industries located close to areas that have abundant bamboo resources. The Ministry of Plantation Industries and Commodities (KPPK), through the Malaysian Timber Industry Board (MTIB), will continue to provide soft loans for bamboo cultivation under the Forest Plantation Development Programme (PPLH) to ensure a continuous supply of bamboo resources. Under the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP), the Bamboo Community Farming programme has also started since the beginning of this year until 2025. World Bamboo Day 2021 marked the 10th consecutive year of Malaysia’s participation in the global celebration. The WBD 2021 celebration was held virtually on 20 September 2021 and was

he Expo 2020 Dubai is the first world expo to be held in Middle East, Africa and South Asia region. Organised by the Bureau International Des Expositions every five years and lasts for six months, the world expo is created as a global destination for millions of people to share ideas, showcase innovation, encourage collaboration and celebrate human ingenuity. Through the theme “Connecting Minds, Creating the Future”, Expo 2020 Dubai aims to provide a platform to foster creativity, innovation, and collaboration globally. It is based on the belief that sharing innovative ideas and building partnerships will inspire the way we shape our future in the most positive way possible. The main site of the Expo will be a 438ha area located between Dubai and Abu Dhabi, and is expected to attract more than 190 participating countries and organisations, and millions of visitors. After nearly a year of delay due to COVID-19 outbreak, Expo 2020 Dubai is scheduled to run from 1 October 2021 – 31 March 2022. Malaysia’s participation in Expo 2020 Dubai was announced with the unveiling of the Rainforest Canopy, Malaysia Pavilion designed by Hijjas Architects and Planners. Situated within the Sustainability District, the Malaysia Pavilion sets to bring together a diverse group of businesses from over 10 different industry verticals spread across six clusters. DESIGN COMPOSITION The main theme of the Malaysia Pavilion is “Energising Sustainability”, which captures the country’s commitment to balance socio-economic progress with environmental protection. As such, the Pavilion, which spans 1,234sqm, is divided into four dedicated zones with sub-themes: ENERGISING TODAY, ENERGISING TOMORROW, ENERGISING BUSINESS, and ENERGISING HARMONY.

The architectural intent is to ‘touch the ground’ as lightly as possible. For that purpose, the exhibition halls are housed in three separate levels, suspended on very long slender legs, hovering four to six metres above the ground. The three organic forms will touch the earth at as few points as possible, and are intended to invoke to the tropical jungle with allegorical treecolumns reaching up for the sunlight, trying to be taller than their neighbours so that their food generating foliage escapes the darkness under the forest canopy. To make the building appear as if floating above the forest of columns, the ground level is enveloped by a series of structural and non-structural slim columns that are positioned and oriented in order to efficiently hold the structure above without the need to increase structural sizes. Horizontal structures holding the slabs will consist of steel beams that sit under timber planks; the canopy ceiling would freely hang from these beams in order to obtain the undulating profile. The façade is made of certified sustainable meranti wood; the use of concrete is kept to a minimum during construction, mainly relying on steel so that the building material can be recycled after dismantling of the pavilion. The “ramp” is another interesting design feature of the Malaysia Pavilion. The ramp excitation gives the experience of walking on a suspension bridge, which fulfilled all the structural approvals and compliance while still being able to give visitors the feel of the suspended bridge.

The auditorium, business centre, café and facilities are housed in the basement, carved four metres into the sands and siltstones on the site. The sunken gardens in the basement will allow sunlight and natural ventilation into the basement box. In terms of massing, the basement box is the heavy massing solid object base, nestled into the soil. From this heavy mass, the tall and slender tree-columns will rise up above ground. The Pavilion has two floors, each offering a variety of experience unique to Malaysia. ➢ The First Floor – The Black Room Concept Canopy 1: Malaysian Rainforest Upon entering, visitors will be greeted by the immersive experience of Malaysian rainforest, which is the extension of the architectural experience that was designed from the beginning. Visitors will have the opportunity to go through a journey involving all senses, giving the closest experience of being in a rainforest, and learn more about the biodiversity of Malaysia. Canopy 2: Sustainable Agricommodities The next exhibit will showcase Malaysia’s sustainable agricommodities. Here, visitors will bring back a wealth of knowledge on Malaysia’s aspirations, and how this sector eradicates poverty for many smallholders as well as the technologies that drive and innovate this sector.

Canopy 3 & 5: Malaysia 2030 The journey will venture into Malaysia’s future directions that are focused on Science, Technology and Innovation that will drive the sustainable development of the country. The room will be surrounded with LED columns with mirror, creating a unique infinity reflection. Canopy 4: Re-energising the future Net Zero Carbon will be the key message in this signature canopy. It tells the story of the national petroleum company Petronas and its ambitious transitional plan to achieve net-zero carbon emissions in its operation by 2050. This is the largest canopy with a high ceiling, where a large LED Cube will be hung from the ceiling to the floor bursting with mesmerising visuals. ➢ The Second Floor – The White Room Concept Canopy 6: Smart City From the black room to a white room concept, this change of environment provides a different experience for visitors. The exhibition will put a spotlight on Malaysia’s sustainable lifestyle and technology, and the country’s aspiration in joining the ranks of smart cities of the region. Canopy 7: Smart Network The final canopy will showcase Malaysia’s green and future technologies optimising on the use of 5G technology in the country. NET ZERO CARBON PAVILION Being the first net zero carbon fixture at Expo 2020 Dubai, the Malaysia Pavilion will have the distinctive opportunity to link its sustainability feature to the implementation of sustainability practices under the Sustainable Forest Management (SFM) system adopted back home in the Malaysia forests. This action aims to ensure Malaysia’s participation at the world expo does not leave behind any carbon footprint, and to inspire others as well to take sustainable actions because a small step can have a big and consequential impact on our future. The roof of the Malaysia Pavilion will be installed with 40 pieces of 100m2 photovoltaic (PV) panels; total PV array outputs during the expo period are at 12,000 kWh. The solar energy feature contributes to 10% of the Pavilion’s energy requirement. Other energy-efficient elements include LED lightings, heli fans, natural lighting, self-shading, green landscaping with vertical gardens and water harvesting features. For Expo 2020 Dubai, Malaysia Pavilion’s #MyButterflyEffect Brand Campaign is a holistic concept to encourage and inspire people to empower themselves towards new thinking, new actions and new outcomes for sustainable development. anish studio Henning Larsen has been named the winner of Seoul Valley, a mixed-use urban development on the northern border of Yongsan-Gu, one of Seoul’s central districts. “Seoul Valley is such an exciting project for central Seoul,” said Jacob Kurek, Henning Larsen partner in charge. “For well over a decade the city has been actively working to revitalize its urban fabric, focusing on the spaces between buildings and the pedestrian links. Seoul Valley fits into that vision, promising to bring public life back to the centre not just through shops and amenities but through a design that focuses on public comfort, greenery, and local tradition.” DESIGN COMPOSITION Prominently located adjacent to the capital's main station, Seoul Valley sets a standard for the city's revitalization campaign foregrounded in the pedestrian experience. The 360,644m² development – designed in collaboration with local architect Siaplan Architects + Planners, and retail consultant Benoy – combines office, retail, hotel, and residential programme within a sprawling public podium. SEOUL 2030 Ringed by mountains and characterized by a patchwork of hills and valleys, the geography of Seoul is largely uneven, save for a spine of level ground that runs through the city’s north-south axis.

Seoul Valley is located in the flat centre, sandwiched between the sprawling rail yards of Seoul Station and an 8-lane freeway leading to the city’s central Jung-gu District. Though centrallylocated, infrastructural barriers have long isolated the long-empty 28,600m² site from its surroundings. Rapid urbanization in the 20 th century transformed the heart of the ancient capital into a western style business-hub, largely losing the human-scale patchwork of traditional hanok villages and gardens. Seoul Valley merges the two scales, its threepronged profile on the skyline fragmenting into numerous smaller masses as it descends. The ‘ground’ level is in fact spread over multiple, with gardens, terraces, and courtyards defining the spaces in between the structures. “With Seoul Valley, we were interested in developing a scheme that merged the outsized scale of the city today with the small patchwork structures of its past,” said Kurek. “By dissolving the scale at the public levels, we not only make it feel more liveable, but nod towards the beautiful structures of old Seoul. Our hope is for Seoul Valley to become a home to not just high end shops but also craftsmen and artisans.” Seoul Valley’s ‘ground’ level is elevated, allowing pedestrians easy access into the project via a sprawling tribune stair on the north side and along the Seoul Skygarden park to the south. The public domain spans multiple floors and is linked by pocket parks and terraces. This meandering public path is framed on either side by shops, boutiques, and showrooms, in addition to workshops and studios. HOLIS-TECH CITY The office and hotel towers cluster around this leafy core, protecting pedestrians from wind, pollution, and urban noise. Plants are specifically chosen and arranged in overlapping layers to create a protected and appealing environment – The Biospheric Layer that acts as a filtration boundary to mitigate pollution; the Percolation Layer in which dense plantings block noise and form a lush green interior; and the Conscious Layer that is geared towards stimulating the senses. The massing results from extensive wind and climate studies, and is aimed at reducing heat build-up and prolonging the outdoor season. The attractive and comfortable green space at the heart of the city will be a magnet for those who wouldn’t normally spend their time in the centre. Close proximity to the main station is convenient for both weary visitors headed to the hotel tower and for the workers heading to the office towers. Terraces on upper floors of these towers provide green sanctuary removed from the bustle of the city. REFASHIONING RETAIL Seoul Valley employs an ‘inside out’ retail scheme that prioritizes visitor experience over sheer commercial frontage. Rather than create maze-like double loaded corridors, retail modules are dispersed independently throughout the site. This, in combination with the comfortable microclimate within Seoul Valley, creates a free-flowing, ever-changing retail offering that encourages lingering and exploration. RED SEA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT Inspired by the forms of the desert, the green oasis and the sea, removing the usual hassle associated with travel by providing a tranquil and memorable experience for passengers from the moment they arrive. 28 September-October 2021 | www.b-i.biz

ork has started on building the new Foster+Partners-designed international airport in Umluj, Tabuk, on the west coast of Saudi Arabia, which is inspired by the colours and textures of the desert landscape. Named the Red Sea International Airport, the building is designed by the worldrenowned architecture firm as part of The Red Sea Project tourist development. Construction began on the airport in early 2021, which is being built around 15 kilometres inland from the coast of the Red Sea, with site levelling currently underway. Set to be completed in 2022, the airport has been designed to reach a capacity of one million passengers a year by 2030. It will almost exclusively serve tourists visiting The Red Sea Project tourist development, which is being developed nearby and will include a ring-shaped hotel on stilts above the Red Sea and a resort built among the Saudi Arabian sand dunes, also designed by Foster+Partners. The form of the airport is informed by the desert that surrounds it. Visuals show a series of five dune-like pods that are arranged radially around a central drop-off and pick-up space. Each of these pods will contain a departure lounge that will have spas and restaurants. Between the pods, spaces filled with greenery will be created for the first stage of the arrivals process. The pods can be operated as a “mini terminal”, meaning that parts of the airport can be shut during periods of low demand to reduce energy usage. “The Red Sea International Airport has been envisaged as a gateway to one of the most unique resorts in the world and an integral part of the visitor experience,” said Gerard Evenden, head of studio at Foster+Partners, when the project was first unveiled

Inspired by the colours and textures of the desert landscape, the design seeks to create a calm and luxurious journey through the terminal and will become a transit hub for visitors coming in by both land and air. Two wings extending from either side of the main terminal will contain the airport’s ancillary spaces including hangers, logistics bags and baggage handling facilities. According to the studio, this configuration will reduce the overall envelope and energy demand in comparison to standard stand-alone ancillary buildings. The studio is aiming for the airport to achieve a LEED Platinum sustainability rating. It will be powered by 100% renewable energy and constructed and operated using a zero single-use plastic ethos. The terminal’s roof shells will extend from the building to shade both the landside and airside areas of the airport. “The overall form of the terminal building has been designed to protect the internal environment from solar gains and therefore substantially reduce the overall energy demand for cooling in the building through self-shading,” said the studio. “Daylight has also been considered with most of the glazing facing north allowing for increased daylight penetration without compromising solar performance.” Along with the main terminal building, a runway and dedicated seaplane runway, as well as three helipads, are under

construction at the site. Described by its developers as the world’s most ambitious tourism development, the Red Sea Project will see a chain of 90 undeveloped islands off the west coast of Saudi Arabia be developed into a tourist resort. Alongside Foster+Partners, Kengo Kuma and Associates and Dubai-based Killa Design are designing hotels as part of the project. The Red Sea Project is one of several sites being developed in Saudi Arabia. In the AlUla desert, French architect Jean Nouvel has designed a subterranean hotel and architecture studio AW2 is creating a glamping resort made up of 47 luxury tents. Foster+Partners is also designing an international airport for the Amaala resort, which is being developed around 250 kilometres north of the Red Sea Project. The “mirage-inspired” terminal drew criticism from the Architects Climate Action Network, which led to the Foster+Partners withdrawing from Architects Declare environmental group, stating that aviation needs “the most sustainable buildings”. n a move fit for the most revered of pop music royalty, a reunited Agnetha Fältskog, Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson, and Anni-Frid Lyngstad will be performing as digital avatars in their own bespoke arena within London’s Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park for the forthcoming ABBA Voyage comeback tour. Constructed from mass timber, the 3,000-seat hexagonal venue was designed by STUFISH Entertainment Architects and can be transported and repurposed in other locales following ABBA Voyage’s London dates, set to kick off on 27 May 2022 and run through 2 October 2022. The tour will then move to other cities, although any venues and dates beyond the lengthy London engagement have yet to be announced. Construction work on the ephemeral arena, which has permission to operate for a five-year span, is already underway at an underutilized parking lot at London Olympic Park near the Dockland Light Railway’s Pudding Mill Station. While design details of the purpose-built, pop-up Scandinavian pop palace are on the scant side, the official ABBA Voyage website does offer a teaser, declaring that the “breathtaking arena delivers the perfect setting for ABBA Voyage, offering you a live music experience like no other. The venue is built around ABBA’s timeless music and never-before-seen concert, so you can have time of your life in General Admission or have the option of a seat in the auditorium if you prefer. You can even party in style in your own Dance Booth.” In addition to general seating, private dance booths, and a stage that will host the virtual likenesses of Agnetha, Björn, Benny, and Anni-Frid (the four “Abbatars” are being developed by George Lucas’s Industrial Light and Magic) alongside a live ten-piece band, the ABBA Voyage arena is also set to include standard features and amenities like food stalls, drinking establishments, merchandise stands, backstage facilities, and more. First catapulted out of Stockholm and into international pop stardom following their 1974 Eurovision win, ABBA has essentially been on indefinite hiatus since 1982. The virtual tour follows the forthcoming 5 November 2021, release of Voyage, the quartet’s first new full-length album of new material in 40 years. Said ABBA in a statement: “To tell the truth, the main inspiration to record again comes from our involvement in creating the strangest and most spectacular concert you could ever dream of. We’re going to be able to sit back in an audience and watch our digital selves perform our songs on a stage in a custom-built arena in London next spring. Weird and wonderful! atural Life is about re-establishing the experience of connecting with both oneself and the natural environment. The ability to now work from anywhere in the world, and the abundant availability of conveniences have led Earthitects to pioneer a new philosophy, called ‘Reverse Urbanization’. The Karnataka-based Earthitects reimagined the experience of everyday living by allying with Mother Earth in designing dwellings that are in harmony with oneself and the natural environment, dwellings that facilitate ‘Natural Life’. The Stone Lodges comprises 15 luxury private residences spread across a 13-acre forested hillside located in Wayanad, Kerala. Built on sloping land on the side of a mountain, they are inspired by the grammar of Mountain Lodges and the native design aesthetic. Staying true to its philosophy, Earthitects only used materials that are natural, with wooden flooring, random-rubble walls, cobblestone pathways, and log rafters. Showcasing a joyous

interplay of stone and wood, the villas are hidden amongst dense foliage and designed with unique elements, keeping sustainability and innovation in mind. Every bit is finely nuanced bespeaking a luxurious yet environmentally responsible aesthetic – A Collectible that ages graciously! The architecture of Stone Lodges is perched on three distinct levels; the first and second levels house the spacious residence while the third level comprises the Exterior Deck with an infinity pool surrounded by lily ponds. Each deck is designed in such a way that it has an unobstructed view of the forest. Designed “around nature, rather than on it”, the natural features such as trees and boulders play their part in enhancing this carefully designed living experience. The roof structure of the Gazebo is made of log rafters, while the clay tiles are supported by four sturdy wooden poles. Underneath the ‘Gazebo’ is a daybed to unwind whilst listening to the songs of nature. Earthitects’ signature bay window brings natural light into the space with a striking view of the lush landscape around. An addition to the expansive rooms, the exterior of the bay window is covered with thick Eucalyptus poles. The master bedroom is a private retreat within the larger sanctuary. Designed to be one with nature, a private deck adjoining the space provides a stunning view of the surrounding wilderness. Portraying the natural edge, the exceptional wooden bed is the

furniture of dreams. Sturdy and bold, this magnificent piece is crafted from robust teak wood. The hardwood floors made of rich teak, adorn the space with warmth and grain. The accent wall with rough-textured stone contrasts the warm wood all around. Another signature of Earthitects is the outdoor bath, which reveals the freedom of taking a shower beneath the open sky. This indulging tropical shower helps one reconnect with nature with the luxury of staying indoors. Set amidst a courtyard, the organic shower tray with steppingstones is surrounded by lush foliage and natural boulders. The interplay of light and shadow is brought about by the Eucalyptus poles on the ceiling, with their natural oils and distinct texture. Made out of brass, the bathroom fixtures add an antique charm to the rustic stonewall. Mounted on the counter is a black granite washbasin elegantly chiselled from a natural rock. The wooden cabinetry below the counter is finished with handcrafted wooden knobs. With sustainability as the core idea, up-cycled wood from construction is crafted into switchboards while maintaining its organic shape. The custom-made antique brass tumbler switch complements the natural texture of the stonewall. Each chair with its distinct personality elevates the beauty of teak wood in its original form combined with cane, weaved by local artisans. inistry of Design (MOD) has designed a ‘Banking Conservatory’ in the heart of Singapore’s Orchard Road, which takes biophilic design in workspaces to a new level and seamlessly weaves architecture and interior design. Dedicated to Citigold and Citigold Private Clients, the Citi Wealth Hub at 268 Orchard Road is the winning design in an international competition launched by Citibank Singapore last year that invited entrants to reimagine the conventional interiors often associated with financial institutions. The brief set out by Citibank Singapore was to create a wealth management centre dedicated to its high net-worth clients, over an area of 2,787sqm across floors six to nine of an office building. Across its four levels, the Citi Wealth Hub has more than 30 client advisory rooms alongside flexible office and event spaces, making it the bank’s largest wealth advisory hub in the world. The site is distinguished by its soaring atrium with tinted glass walls and skylights that create ideal conditions for growing tropical plants. In recognition of this, the studio proposed an

office scheme based around a lush conservatory that would anchor the entire office. On floors seven and eight, a series of social spaces are nestled within the greenery, including a bar, observation deck, discussion pods, banquette seating and a central garden lounge with a honed Grigio Carnico marble bar. “The choreographed verdant and lush greenery evokes an atmosphere where everything seems to flourish in a natural and sustainable manner – a nod to the ideals of wealth management,” said the studio. “Although drawing from the virtues of biophilic design, the scheme aims to create a cultured conservatory and not a wild forest,” she added. “Introducing a measure of control and order amidst nature’s abundance, we created a series of carefully detailed planter box arrangements.” These sinuous, hairline brass containers are lit from below to signpost pathways and meeting spaces among the foliage. On the seventh floor, garden pods were installed as an alternative to traditional meeting rooms. These are lined with acoustic panels and equipped with curved TV screens, concealed power points and cables for connecting laptops. In collaboration with ICN Design landscape architecture studio, MOD carefully selected plants that would adapt easily to an air-conditioned environment, thrive even in the shade and create four distinct vertical layers to offer varied views at every level. Tropical plants like betel nut palms, parlour palms, birds nest ferns and money plants, all of which are intricately composed to provide interesting views along contouring pathways.

This lushness is particularly apt considering Citibank Singapore’s business of growing wealth and perpetuating prosperity. For the tallest level, the designers selected betel nut feature palms, while elegant, feathery parlour palms sit below their crowns at the second level with bushy saplings and big-leafed arums in the foreground. Feathery Boston ferns, rosette-leafed bird’s nest ferns and money plants occupy the lowest level, fringed by jungle-floor plants that are spotlit at night. The eighth floor is dedicated to Citigold Private Clients, leading the design team to opt for more luxurious materials such as walnut and marble, while an observation deck offers aerial views of the conservatory on the level below. Since this floor is less open to natural daylight, the planting here is smaller in both the horizontal and vertical scale, with planters set between desk alcoves and pathways. Floors six and nine were conceived as “backstage areas” offering office space for the bank’s 210 relationship managers. They hold a variety of hot desks, collaboration tables and a town hall for meetings. Large planters help create a calming work environment on these levels and are filled with shade-loving plants that, in the wild, would grow low on the rainforest floor. Throughout the office, the temperature of the lighting is programmed to mirror human’s natural circadian rhythm and the movement of the sun, changing from blue to reddish undertones over the course of the day. To keep the plants healthy the project uses a hydroponic system, in which plants are held in place by absorbent granules instead of soil. Grow lights with special LED

bulbs that mimic natural sunlight are integrated within the recessed architectural lighting. “What we’re trying to do is continue the essence of experience from front of house to back of house. So you see similar elements – the colour scheme, the plants – but pared back. This raises the bank’s back of house benchmark,” said the studio. “We’ve had really good responses from Citibank and from their clients so far,” the studio said. “They’ve said this is unlike any other wealth management hub they have seen.” Studies have shown that access to green spaces, or even pictures of nature, can benefit workers’ mental health and improve performance in the office. As a result, a plethora of plant-filled workplace interiors have sprung up over the past few years, including this co-working space in Lisbon with over 1,000 potted plants and trees, while tropical flora provides privacy for workers inside an office in Utrecht.
