The Art of Creating Inclusive and Harmonious Environments
Dear ASID North Members,
Our journey together as interior designers, industry partners and students is not merely about creating spaces; it’s about living the brand, embodying its essence, and elevating it through our unwavering commitment to excellence.
Diversity and inclusion lie at the core of our principles, serving as the cornerstone of our community. It is important that we not only celebrate our differences, but also actively seek to embrace and empower individuals from all walks of life. Let’s work to broaden our outreach, reaching out to a more diverse community of customers and showcasing the invaluable benefits of hiring an ASID designer. Fostering a culture of inclusivity extends beyond mere rhetoric; it requires tangible action and meaningful engagement. Let’s come together to create design community events that serve as catalysts for connection, collaboration, and inspiration. Whether through chapter events, fundraisers, volunteerism, or education opportunities, let’s ensure that every member feels valued, heard, and empowered to thrive. It’s important for us to shine a spotlight on the wealth of talent within our design community, promoting a more diverse representation of lesser-known designers. By amplifying their voices and showcasing their unique perspectives, we enrich not only our community but also the very fabric of design itself.
In today’s rapidly evolving landscape, the significance of effective messaging and communication cannot be overstated. It is through our collective voice that we reinforce the value of our brand and deliver tangible benefits to not only our customers, but our community as well. As ambassadors of design, let’s strive to ensure that every interaction, every project, and every endeavor reflects the values and ethos of ASID. In our quest to embrace the future, we must embrace new and modern ways of communication, catering to the needs and preferences of our younger generation members. Let’s leverage technology to foster meaningful connections, enhance collaboration, and facilitate knowledge-sharing. By embracing innovation, we ensure that ASID remains a vibrant and dynamic community, poised to thrive in the digital age.
Let’s not forget the invaluable contributions of our remote designers and industry partners who may not reside in the Central Phoenix area. Their dedication and passion are instrumental in shaping the future of design, and it is our collective responsibility to ensure that they feel included, supported, and valued.
Together, let’s move forward on this journey with renewed enthusiasm, unwavering dedication, and strive to uphold the values of ASID, embodying excellence, innovation, and inclusivity in all that we do.
With warm regards,
Teri

MAR Lux Kitchen and Bath
The Arizona North Chapter of ASID gathered for their March chapter meeting. The venue? The exquisite new Lux Kitchen and Bath showroom located in Scottsdale, Arizona, where design inspirations of kitchen and bath fixtures met culinary delights in a perfect fusion of creativity and taste. As attendees entered the showroom, they were greeted not only by the sleek lines of modern fixtures, but also by the tantalizing aromas of Mexican cuisine.
The main highlight of the evening was the thought-provoking program—a Town Hall discussion about recent National membership changes within ASID. The Board of the Arizona North chapter facilitated the session, setting the stage for an engaging dialogue among members. Members were encouraged to delve into the presentation, asking questions and sharing their perspectives. What ensued was a lively exchange of ideas, with members expressing both enthusiasm and apprehension about the recent changes.
Throughout the discussion, various viewpoints emerged, reflecting the diverse interests and concerns within the design community. Some members highlighted the potential benefits of the changes, such as enhanced member benefits and expanded membership opportunities. Others raised valid concerns about the impact on existing members, the devaluation of the practitioner membership and the potential for unexpected changes to

Emphasizing the significance of collective advocacy, they underscored the power of unified voices in shaping the future direction of ASID.

Inclusive & Harmonious Environments
PENING THE REALMS TO SENSORY AND inclusive experiences for all clientele, the design industry is evolving above just creating space. It’s crafting intentional environments and creating elevated living experiences that are universal and harmonious, innovative and timeless, familiar and cuttingedge to all, regardless of their unique needs, different abilities and diverse backgrounds.
It’s leveraging expertise in interior design and focusing on transformative concepts to shape everyday lives with empathy and compassion, creating connection and eliminating barriers. Design needs to evoke a sense of connection and belonging.
Inclusive design not only celebrates and accentuates the lives of individuals with all sorts of abilities and ages, but also the cross-culture dimension. Taking intentional time to understand not only unique perspectives but also backgrounds and integrating these influences into the environment creates a strong sense of belonging and flows with an elevated quality of living.
Harmony is the poetic fusion that the interior designer orchestrates using various elements like textures, patterns, finishes, colors, lighting, furnishings and materials to bring forth a sensory experience that is calming to the soul.
The following are a few ways to ensure more inclusive and harmonious designs:
Involve clients: a great dynamic in planning and execution is the involvement of clients’ personal preferences and building the design from it, enhancing it in every aspect with our own research and knowledge. Ensuring spatial design is according to their specific needs, creating a safe space for unlocking their full potential of living.
Work with occupational therapists: this aids designers in getting deep insight into accessibility standards and the right solutions to craft spaces catering effectively to the specific preferences and requirements of clients and enhancing their quality of life.
Select universal furnishings: With the direction towards inclusivity, designers are turning towards selections of furnishings that incorporate the lifestyle of all abilities providing comfort, safety and ease of use like fold-away furniture and softer silhouettes.
Consider all the senses: Enhancing the overall experience of living, adaptive design is now extending beyond the typical physical accessibility ideas and incorporating sensory experiences to cater
Creating an inclusive environment follows the same principle of balance
more inclusive and harmonious designs continued from page 21 5
to the diverse needs of individuals with conditions that help heal and enhance lives. Dimmable, targeted and ambient lighting, sound-absorbing materials, noise cancellation options, flexible layouts, clutter-free designs, mindful selection of patterns, interactive elements and visual aesthetics cater to great sensory experiences.
Integrate technology: Smart home technologies, voice-activated commands and AI are the future of designing spaces with innovative selections to create spaces that not only enhance the user’s experience but also make the environment immensely safe, independent and easier to live in. Convenient and barrier-free for all enabling movement and flow for everyone to be independent and free to move. Phones, TVs, doorbells and now furniture with smart technology are the future.
Incorporate biophilia: to enhance the inclusive design, use biophilic elements to create an environment of serenity. Incorporating natural shapes and materials, live plants, water features, earthy tones and textures, natural light, visual relaxation and air quality will add to the harmonious living environment. Catering to limitations of movement, bringing the outdoors in boosts morale and enhances living experiences.
Creating an inclusive environment follows the same principle of balance and plays with elements to create a practical, balanced and functional space that syncs with everyone’s needs and wants regardless of ability, age or mobility. The core principle of adaptive and inclusive design is transforming spaces to the needs of all abilities to be able to live and thrive in the environment that they deserve. Creating independence, accessibility, safety, confidence, quality of life and the power to live contently––of your own free will.
The positive direction towards learning, understanding and respecting history, background, diversity, aging, and culture, and working towards enhancing the current abilities and lifestyle by thoughtfully curating inclusive and balanced environments for all clients to thrive in is a brilliant wave of evolvement in the design industry.
Enhancing design with natural elements also creates harmony by changing the frequency and energy of the space. Being visually aesthetic, nature’s art form supersedes all talents and brings in incredible textures, patterns, colors and individuality to a space. The signature elements of a harmonious space include similarity and serenity. Blending this with inclusive design creates a masterpiece of a well-curated, harmonized space to enhance the mental, emotional and physical state of a client.
The quality of our surroundings has a strong and direct influence on the quality of our lives. Regardless of our differences in abilities, whether physical, behavioral, cognitive, or neurological, all of us have the dream of living well in our homes. Empathetic, intentional and thoughtfully curated space decisions as interior designers can enhance the well-being, belongingness, security and independence of our clients. Adding the element of harmony elevates the entire design.
Adaptive, transformational and universal designs are the new terms emerging in the design world highlighting diversity and inclusivity, emphasizing the role of compassion and empathy in design for all with different and diverse abilities. Integrating features harmoniously for elevated sensory experiences, open floor plans for movement, universal furnishings, strategically placed walkways, safer and accessible stairways, lower appliances, custom cabinetry, open shelving, lowered islands, en-suite bath designs, curbless showers, extra seatings in spaces, intentional kitchen designs and smart technology, etc., all encompass adaptable design enabling and empowering individuals. Anticipating changes and futureproofing homes and designing with open plans are also key in adaptable design.
Rhythm, progression and repetition create a cohesive and balanced grouping of elements to bring harmony to the space. Creating visual balance by leaving deliberate negative space not only highlights the focal design arena
but also gives breathing room to the aura. Embracing the calm in the negative and enhancing the design in intentional space creates a masterpiece of contrast with intent and functional flow. Distributing textures, patterns, light and form well and creating a coherent connection between them is the goal.
A few incredible inclusive and harmonious design masterpieces include, Musholm by AART architects in Denmark. It’s an incredible example of an inclusive and harmonious design masterpiece. A holiday and sports complex, it encompasses all necessary instruments of intentional design, including spacious multi-activity halls, holiday homes, and a 360-ft activity ramp. It’s the epitome of inclusive and harmonious design as it opens out towards the serene natural landscape of the surroundings, celebrating nature and enhancing experience. This center won the IAUD Award for being the world’s most socially inclusive place in 2016––an icon indeed.
Enabling Village by WOHA in Singapore is another remarkable example of universal design done exquisitely. To start, it is a repurposed design of what was previously the Bukit Merah Vocational Institute. Flowing into the pedestrian network of the neighborhood, it is a design masterpiece enabling access and experience for all.
Finally, the Laurent House by Frank Lloyd Wright in Rockford, Illinois is another prime spectacle in residential design for inclusivity and harmony. Commissioned specifically for certain conditions, the homeowners requested the space to be a functional design. It was also enhanced using natural elements like sunlight to create an incredible example of design done right.
Creating adaptable dynamic spaces, encouraging belongingness and independence, relieving daily challenges for our clients with unique needs and sensitivities, and curating spaces together is the future of inclusive design––and it’s what will be needed to create truly inclusive and harmonious spaces.
