Reflection
As my Presidential term comes to a close, I find myself filled with gratitude as I reflect on the past year. My journey to this position wasn’t the traditional one. I didn’t first serve as your President-Elect. Instead, I stepped in early in December, after decisions had already been made and the new fiscal year was well underway. Navigating a role I wasn’t fully prepared for was a challenge, and I leaned on many of you for support. Despite the hurdles, I am proud to say that we had an incredibly successful year together.
We worked tirelessly to bring you quality programming that was relevant and insightful. From discussions on advocacy and aging in place to our town hall discussion on ASID national membership changes, our chapter meetings were engaging and well-attended. Our April chapter meeting on biophilic design saw the highest attendance of the year, with over 75 participants. We also introduced a new program for our industry partners, Concepts & Cocktails, which has been highly successful, fostering new connections and conversations between our industry partners (IPs) and designers.
In February, we were one of four professional organizations that organized and participated in a well-executed Student Career Day. More than 75 students enjoyed a full day of engaging discussions and presentations from designers and product vendors, providing them with valuable insights into the industry. The event concluded with a small job fair, offering students the opportunity to connect with potential employers and start building their professional networks. It was a successful and impactful day for the students and the industry professionals involved.
Our 2024 Design Excellence Awards Gala was a completely new experience, featuring a refreshed and exciting format. The evening was one of unparalleled celebration, filled with energy and enthusiasm. Many of you have shared that it was a spectacular success, with the new format bringing fresh excitement to the event. It was truly a night to remember, honoring the incredible talent and achievements within our chapter.
Serving as your President has been an honor. None of our achievements would have been possible without the support of our dedicated board of directors and members like you. I want to extend my deepest gratitude to the board members who stood by me during challenging times and celebrated our successes. You all mean the world to me.
A huge thank you to our incredible industry partners and sponsors this year— your dedication allows us to do what we do, and we appreciate your unwavering support. And finally, thank you to all of you, our devoted members. You are the reason we do this, and your continued dedication is what drives our success. I look forward to seeing you all in the future and can’t wait to witness the wonderful things that are still to come for our chapter.
With Gratitude,
Teri Smithers, ASID 2023-24 President ASID Arizona North Chapter

JUNE
TTOPIC: How to Attract Your Ideal Customer and Keep Them
HOST: Contract Furnishings Mart (CFM)
CHAPTER MEETING
he June chapter meeting of ASID Arizona North was a fantastic event! Held on June 20th at Contract Furnishings Mart’s (CFM) showroom, it was a collaborative gathering with other interior design associations, including NARI and NKBA. Each shared presentations about their organization and had informational tables set up in the showroom, providing attendees with opportunities to learn more about each group’s mission and services.
CFM also took the opportunity to introduce attendees to their showroom, showcasing the range of products they offer and highlighting a few exciting new additions. This gave guests an inside look at the quality and variety of materials available for interior design professionals.
The evening’s program, “How to Attract Your Ideal Customer and Keep Them,” was presented by Jeffrey Shaw, a renowned portrait photographer turned speaker. Jeffrey shared insights on how to market to your ideal client, specifically addressing what it takes to capture the attention of affluent customers, win their trust, exceed their
expectations, and keep them coming back—especially in changing times and volatile markets. He emphasized understanding what makes wealthy clients tick and how to create longlasting and meaningful customer relationships.
Guests were treated to a delicious Mediterranean spread provided by CFM, adding a delightful culinary touch to an evening filled with valuable networking and learning. It was an inspiring and insightful night for all who attended!

The final Concepts & Cocktails event before we paused for summer and upcoming ASID events was a night to remember!
Affinity Kitchens graciously hosted us in their stunning Scottsdale showroom, offering attendees the opportunity to explore a series of beautifully designed kitchen vignettes while enjoying cold beverages and an assortment of delicious mini sandwiches.
The event began with a thought-provoking discussion led by Amanda Pienta, who posed the question: How do you know your business is offering the best customer experience? She encouraged attendees to reflect on whether they measure this through reviews, revenue, or referrals. Amanda emphasized the importance of trusting your team but also verifying the quality of service being delivered. She shared her own method of conducting secret shopper tests, and evaluating her business by phone, email, and in person to ensure consistency in customer care.
Amanda also offered valuable insights on creating customer-centric policies. She advised that businesses should start with the customer’s needs and work backward to shape their
operations, ensuring a focus on customer obsession and maintaining the core values that lead to success.
Amanda was joined by Kristen Whipps, Affinity Kitchen’s general manager, who shared exciting news about the showroom’s remodel that was to commence in July. The new space will feature a live kitchen, adding fresh energy to the already inspiring vignettes.
The evening concluded with attendees breaking into small groups to discuss how they assess and maintain top-tier customer service in their own businesses, sharing strategies and
best practices for creating exceptional customer experiences.

2025 Colormix Forecast: Capsules Exploring Color Trends
For ASID Arizona North and Sherwin-Williams, October is akin to New Year's. It’s a time of new beginnings and forecasts of what’s to come.
At our local chapter of ASID, it marks the start of the new term as last year’s board of directors passes the torch to the incoming board. And for Sherwin-Williams, it represents the introduction of the color palettes forecasted to significantly influence the design community for the next several years.
As one of the most well-attended chapter meetings of the year, the October Colormix Forecast is also like a reunion for our community and an opportunity to gain tremendous inspiration––not just from the new palettes but from the strategic vision for the chapter. And the 2025 forecast continued the tradition, drawing a diverse crowd of designers ranging from students to emerging professionals to seasoned designers, who filled the Alyshaan showroom to gain insight into the color trends that will shape interiors for years to come.
Knowledge and Collaboration Prevail
To kick off the evening, our chapter president Amber Khan, ASID Associate, shared what’s in store for the 2024-25 term. This year is all about building a platform and community that inspires innovation and collaboration.
There will be fresh takes on knowledge expansion with more opportunities for learning and gaining CEUs, as well as new topics explored. From the chapter meetings to the ever-popular Concepts & Cocktails to our CEU marathon and Student Career Day, the emphasis will be on positively impacting the trajectory of our members’ careers.
Before Laurie Clark, senior designer account executive at Sherwin-Williams, took the stage to introduce the 2025 Colormix Forecast, Amber introduced the incoming board of directors who will help carry out this vision. The dynamic and synergistic roster includes:
• Amber Khan, President
• Leann Fernald, Chapter Administrator
• Amanda Pienta, Director at Large
• Angelica Dela Roca, Communications Director
• Gretchen Palmer, Finance Director
• Beth Cochran, Professional Development Director
• Nicole Thomas, Membership Director
• Kristi Kriener, Student Representative to the Board
Then came the introduction of Capsules…
Global Influences Shaping the 2025 Colormix Forecast
Sherwin-Williams' Colormix Forecast is not simply a collection of aesthetically pleasing colors, it’s a reflection of broader cultural and global trends––capsules of rich, unique stories. The influence of diverse global cultures and personal heritage is evident in the color selections, which makes the forecast not just a design guide, but a form of storytelling.
“The 2025 Colormix Forecast was influenced by a variety of cultures from all over the world,” explained Sue Wadden, Sherwin-Williams director of color marketing. “Many creators and artists use their personal ancestry or heritage to guide their design aesthetic, which is not necessarily a new idea. However, the end product is what makes it fresh and new because it's deeply personal and unique.”
The 48 colors that make up Capsules embody stories of authenticity, curiosity, inspiration and the omni-present, ever-changing paradigms that exist within our wonderfully diverse world. However, the resurgence of several 20th-century design movements and styles also influenced the palette selection.
“We were also inspired by this resurgence of a fresh twist on classical design elements of the past, including Art Nouveau and Art Deco,” Wadden said. “These iconic designs feel fresh to younger generations, and designers are leaning in more traditional, ornate styles for a truly unique look that is not easily replicated.”
By tapping into modern and classical aesthetics, the 2025 Colormix Forecast offers a unique perspective on how design and color can be timeless and forward-thinking. And this is prevalent throughout each of the four Capsules: Chrysalis, Paradox, Wellspring and Kindred.
Palettes curated to inspire and create connection
Every year, rigorous research and data analysis goes into curating each of the color palettes so that they can not only work seamlessly across residential and commercial design, but also respond to the needs of the world. This year, the focus was on exploring colors that would inspire innovation, create connection, illuminate the future, and in many ways, evoke a sense of connection to nature––whether at home or at the office.
For instance, the Chrysalis palette, which is saturated in subtle neutrals, was created to inspire intentionality and future thinking while capturing a sense of sanctuary. The rich, grounded hues in the palette are reminiscent of the timelessness of nature and can bring warmth and depth to any space.
“The entire Chrysalis palette is usable for both residential and
PORCELAIN | GRANITE | DELLA TERRA ® QUARTZ
MARBLE | QUARTZITE | GLASS | PORCELAIN PAVERS
commercial interiors,” Wadden said. “It is anchored by Sealskin (SW 7675), a deep warm gray, and includes foundational neutrals such as Drift of Mist (SW 9166), Shiitake (SW 9173), and Mindful Gray (SW 7016), which range from warm to cool tones. These neutrals are balanced with a deep muted green in Thunderous (SW 6201) and a rich berry tone, Carnelian (SW 7580). We have also seen the emergence of browns in interiors and this palette captures multiple brown tones, such as Grounded (SW 6089), Mexican Sand (SW 7519), and Tanbark (SW 6061), that reflect the warmth of wood tones,” Wadden said.
In recent years, the intersection of biophilia and wellness has become a major driver in residential and commercial design. The 2025 Colormix Forecast takes this into account by incorporating nature-based colors that evoke calmness and serenity, promoting overall well-being.
“Biophilia and wellness go hand in hand,” Wadden explained. “Biophilia is our innate connection with nature and has actual health benefits, so it will never go away as an influence within the commercial and residential design industry.”
From the Slow Green (SW 6456) in Paradox to the blue-hued Upward (SW 6239) in Wellspring or the warm Caribbean Coral (SW 2854) in the Kindred palette, there’s a clear calming and nurturing effect across the entire Capsules collection.
“Nature-based colors continue to be widely accepted and popular by a wide range of people because they are reminiscent of natural elements,” Wadden said. “Muted earth tones are the most favorable for those who are going through mental or behavioral health issues due to their connection with the natural environment.”
The 2025 forecast integrates these trends by including palettes that balance boldness and subtlety, offering choices that can be used in highenergy, social spaces as well as quiet, reflective environments.

One of the key questions surrounding the Colormix Forecast is how long these color trends influence the broader market. According to Wadden, the colors introduced in Colormix are typically ahead of the curve and take a year or two to fully saturate the consumer market.
“When you look at a trend curve, Colormix colors are typically just beginning to emerge and are in directional alignment with the top design and furniture shows in Europe,” Wadden said. “Then it takes a year or two to hit mainstream within the consumer market—massmarket appeal.”
This slow but steady adoption gives designers the chance to introduce these new colors into their projects in a way that feels fresh and unique, while still being relevant for years to come.
Designer Perspectives: Colormix as a Source of Inspiration
The influence of Sherwin-Williams’ Colormix Forecast extends beyond color selection—it serves as a creative spark for designers across multiple disciplines. Milton Burford Jr., ASID Student, expressed how the Colormix Forecast opens up new possibilities in his design work.
“What draws me to Colormix is the introduction of the new color palettes for the season,” he said. “It gives me great inspiration as far as design ideas and artwork to intertwine into spaces. It also opens up your palette to be more bold by using more colors in spaces and introducing your clients to new colors as well.”
For Julie Dasher, founder and CEO of Julie Dasher Rugs, the Colormix Forecast serves as a deep well of inspiration for her rug designs.
“I’ve been going to Colormix for nearly 15 years now,” she said. “I love coming to Colormix because I find it very inspiring for my rug designs. The last Colormix actually inspired a whole new design for me.”
Dasher noted that she often recolors her rug designs based on the Sherwin-Williams palettes. “I just had a designer recolor one of the rugs on our website in that navy and blush pink palette with some of the accent colors from the Sherwin-Williams color palette. So, designers are very influenced by it.”
While some designers prefer to fully embrace the latest color trends, others take a more nuanced approach. Nancy Cameron, ASID Allied, of Nancy Cameron Design, shared how she finds subtle ways to incorporate Colormix colors into her timeless designs.
“I deal with more of a timeless design, so I don’t typically have clients who want something that’s necessarily 2024,” Cameron said. “So even though you can be using them, you want to be able to put [them] into the context where it has longevity.”
Longevity seemed to be a theme of the evening, from the preview of our chapter’s strategic roadmap to the journey through the colors within Capsules. There was also a renewed spirit of connection not just between the 48 trending colors, but also within the wonderful community that makes up our ASID Arizona North chapter.
Innovative Wine Cellar Designs
Innovative Wine Cellar Designs is the nation’s premier custom full-service wine cellar design, build and install company for homes and businesses in Arizona. We are a family owned and operated wine cellar company established in 2002.
After owning a California Closets franchise in Phoenix and Scottsdale for many years, and feeling that the closet storage business was getting a little crowded, Sandy Horwitz decided it was time to reinvent himself once again. After doing some research, Sandy realized that wine sales were outselling beer sales and that there was a need for temperature-controlled cellars, especially in the desert for collectors to properly store their growing collections. IWCD’s clientele range from the casual collector with hundreds of bottles to the enthusiast with thousands of bottles.
Over the years, IWCD has expanded into restaurants and the hospitality industry, and has built some of the most amazing wine cellars in many fine restaurants all over the US. IWCD has been on the cutting edge of moving the direction of the traditional wood wine cellars into the new and exciting contemporary cellars using stainless steel, acrylic, high gloss veneers and exotic woods. Gone are the days of the traditional walk-in cellar to the sleek new look of wine walls. IWCD works closely with the design community as well as most of the Valley’s custom home builders. Our wine cellars can be found in many model homes throughout the Valley. IWCD has also expanded their market into Nevada as well as California.
Our in-house design staff is committed to a seamless experience to create your wine cellar and to provide excellent customer service.

A MESSAGE FROM THE OUTGOING SRB
Dear ASID North Board Chapter and Fellow Members,
As my term as Student Representative to the ASID North Board Chapter comes to an end, I want to express my heartfelt gratitude for the opportunity to serve in this role. It has been an incredibly rewarding experience, and I am proud of the growth and connections we have fostered over the past year.
Being part of this chapter has provided me with invaluable benefits, from professional development and networking to being at the forefront of interior design trends. The sense of community within ASID has been instrumental in shaping my personal and professional growth.
Over the past year, I have had the privilege of contributing to several initiatives, including but not limited to organizing student presentations, attending chapter meetings and helping with the Design Excellence Gala. These events not only allowed me to represent student interests but also to bridge the gap between emerging and established designers. The experience has given me greater insight into the dedication and passion that fuels our industry.
I look forward to continuing to support the chapter as an active member, and I’m excited to see the great things that lie ahead. To the incoming Student Representative, I wish you all the best as you embark on this meaningful journey.
Thank you all for your collaboration, support, and dedication. It has truly been an honor to serve alongside such talented individuals.

A MESSAGE FROM THE INCOMING SRB
There’s a spark in the air, and interior design students from across the state are showing up! New student members are embracing opportunities to get involved––volunteering at events, joining committees and curating exciting programs for the year.
My goals for this year include increasing student engagement with our industry and increasing awareness in our community of how interior designers are problem-solvers. The Student Affairs Committee will be doing groundbreaking work to create a new outreach program. Planning is underway on an interactive presentation to introduce high school students to the interior design profession. Over the next few years, we hope to expand this vision to K-12 students.
Who would like a mentor? This fall, ASID is rolling out its pilot nationwide mentoring program. Experienced designers are paired with students and new design professionals for personalized support and mentoring. Your ASID Arizona North chapter is also working on creating local mentorship opportunities. Stay tuned for more details on how you can benefit from these programs.
Need some extra cash? Student members are invited to apply for ASID Arizona North-sponsored scholarships. Scholarships are available for students who demonstrate leadership, share something that has influenced their lives, and whose volunteer work has made an impact. Each scholarship recipient awarded is $1000. Projects can be submitted for residential design, commercial design and sustainable design. All members of ASID can enter a design into the competition. I encourage our student members to enter, as it’s a great experience and adds to the depth of your resume.
More goodies for our student members––plans are in the works for an exciting and resourceful Career Day and graduation party in the spring. The year will culminate with the Design Excellence Awards Gala in August, where we will celebrate ASID’s 50th anniversary and the winners of the design competitions! This is a black-tie event where you get the chance to meet the local who’s who in interior design (and dress up fancy)!

Please feel free to reach out to me! I want to help you get the most out of your ASID student membership! Welcome to 2024-2025!
On August 17th, we gathered to celebrate local designers, industry partners, and students at the 2024 Design Excellence Awards Gala, held at the historic Warehouse 215 in downtown Phoenix. This year, we received an impressive 178 award submissions across 35 categories, including the highest number of student entries in the chapter’s history.
Each submission was judged anonymously by 29 prestigious ASID members from across the country, ensuring fairness and recognizing the best of the best. The competition was fierce, with many categories featuring close scores, and the projects themselves were nothing short of stunning. These awards are a testament to the incredible talent within our chapter, showcasing the creativity and skill of our community.
Congratulations to all the winners, and a heartfelt thank you to everyone who participated in this year’s Design Excellence Awards. Your work continues to elevate our industry and inspire us all!
The gala this year was a completely new experience compared to previous years, featuring a refreshed and exciting format. The evening began with a lively cocktail hour, where guests were greeted with celebratory glasses of champagne as they made their way to have their photos taken. The atmosphere was elevated by the incredible live music from the talented Kurtis Adair, while everyone enjoyed delicious handpassed appetizers.
The event then progressed into a stunning venue, where the awards program took place. Lynne Beyer and Tabitha Evans, our ASID Arizona North Chapter hometown heroes, hosted the evening’s festivities. Throughout the night, we celebrated the accomplishments of our community, handing out a total of 32 sponsor awards, six board awards, three chapter awards, and 63 design awards.
Once the awards were presented, the curtains opened to reveal a beautifully decorated reception room. Attendees enjoyed an exquisite selection of food, prepared by M Culinary , alongside cocktails and unlimited champagne. It was a night filled with celebration, as we gathered in a historical warehouse, enjoying the company of old and new friends while toasting our collective success.
Special awards given out that night included:

Industry Partner of the Year –LUX Kitchen and Bath RYAN YOUNG, DINO TRAKAS and SCOTT SCHWEDA
The Industry Partner Award recognizes an individual or team who has a significant and positive impact on our community, shows unwavering dedication to the success of our chapter, and consistently steps up when needed. This year’s recipient exemplifies all of these qualities. When we faced an unexpected challenge and had to pivot for one of our chapter meetings at the last minute, Ryan and his team didn’t hesitate. Not only did they say yes immediately, but they also went the extra mile by rearranging their entire showroom to accommodate us. Their efforts resulted in a successful town hall discussion in their brand-new showroom. Ryan and his team’s commitment to supporting our chapter has been remarkable, and their contributions make them an invaluable asset to our design community. We are grateful for their dedication and willingness to go above and beyond, and it’s an honor to present them with this year’s Industry Partner Award.

Paige Lewis is a member whose tireless dedication has been an invaluable asset to our chapter. Not only is she an accomplished designer with multiple awards to her name, but she has also generously shared her talents by designing and coordinating our chapter’s design publication, Desert Design Magazine. Her contributions to the magazine have elevated its quality and reflected the creativity of our community.
Though she has decided to retire as our publisher, Paige continues to be a steadfast supporter and champion of our chapter. Her passion for design and unwavering commitment to our community leave a lasting impact, and we are deeply grateful for all she has done.
Media Partner –MODERN LUXURY INTERIORS
Our partnership with Modern Luxury Interiors has been truly wonderful, and we are grateful for the support of its publisher, Kelly Persellin, and the contributions she has brought to our chapter this year. Kelly set the tone for our awards ceremony by kicking off the evening with a celebratory champagne toast, warmly congratulating all our talented designers. She also took the opportunity to thank the entire design community for their continued support. In addition, Kelly expressed her gratitude to the current board and our president, Teri Smithers, for her exceptional leadership and guidance throughout a successful year and gala event.
