Reflections
As my term has ended, I find myself reflecting on the accomplishments of our chapter this past year. As an industry, we all had to learn how to manage our time, client experiences, and expectations due to product delays. In addition, designers had to work harder with our architects and contractors to value engineer projects due to the rising cost of goods and the lack of workers and productivity. However, we came together as an industry with a collaborative spirit to raise the bar of interior design in Arizona. As a result, it was evident in the Design Excellence Awards that the work product of the Arizona North Chapter is extraordinary. Highlights of the past year are the ASID Designer Holiday House which raised $20,000 for Voices for Casa and $14,000 for our chapter; Mix-n-Mingle’s unprecedented turn out of 150 people; the totally revamped Design Excellence Awards, including simplified entry instructions, new categories including three student opportunities, updated judging criteria, and the redesigned crystal awards. I was also thrilled to see excellent programming for the chapter meetings with guest speakers, book signings, CEUs, and cooking demos to name a few. It has been my honor and pleasure to serve as your president and I can’t wait to see what next year brings.

Welcome to a New Term!
Iam excited to serve the chapter this year. We have all faced some challenges in the past few years, our chapter included. From learning how to provide content and value to our members during an unprecedented pandemic to restoring a desire to volunteer and rebuild our chapter, we have adapted and worked together to create a new beginning.
That is how I see this year, as a new frontier. This term will be unlike any other we have seen in recent years. Your new board of directors will be coming together and working as a team to ensure we can move this chapter forward. I believe it is imperative that we learn how to work together, grow together and lead together. Our future as a chapter is dependent on growing new connections, inspiring new volunteers and developing new leaders who want to serve.
Through weathering the pandemic, and my own personal hardships I have learned the importance of community. ASID has always served as the foundation of my design community. Throughout my years in Orange County, I was an active part of our OC Chapter, and the relationships and partnerships that were fostered as a part of my involvement continue to this day as an invaluable part of my life. While I am relatively new to the Arizona North Chapter, and Phoenix in general, I am excited to learn, grow and expand my horizons alongside each and every one of you.
For this term, we will be focused on creating a strong community within the chapter, developing programming that will provide value for our designers and offer new opportunities that will benefit our industry partners. We are looking to revitalize our membership, bring fresh energy, new ideas, be big and bold, and challenge ourselves each and every day how we can best serve all of those who are a part of our ASID Community.
Throughout the fall and early winter, you will see a definitive shift as we explore this new landscape, and venture into roads this chapter has not previously traveled. I hope you can be patient with us, as we try new things, explore new ways to connect, and learn how to bridge the gap between honoring time old traditions, and engaging our students and emerging professionals. The future of our chapter lies with the next generation of designers. Their passion and enthusiasm for our Industry will help propel us to the next level. As it will be them who will continue to lead the charge in advocating for how we are valued and seen as design professionals and fighting for a more sustainable industry.
I look forward to a year full of possibilities, seeing what we can do together, and how we can make a difference.
Here is to a wonderful new start!

MAY
CHAPTER MEETING
Studio 41 hosted our May meeting with James Van Landingham from Hansgrohe/Axor providing a CEU to showcase "Selling Luxury". This CEU was beneficial in teaching attendees how to identify the affluent buyer, what makes an affluent buyer purchase goods, and how we can harness this knowledge to sell to a buyer with means. The Studio 41 showroom is a beautiful space encapsulating the latest kitchen and bath fixtures, hardware and cabinetry. We were treated to a wonderful array of tasty delights, and our hosts made sure everyone was well taken care of. The end of the evening wrapped up with a raffle for attendees. A couple of lucky winners walked away with Hansgrohe gift bags featuring new bath fixtures for their home.

TOPIC: Dream Kitchens and Baths
HOST: Kohler Signature Store by Hughes Supply
CHAPTER MEETING
Our June meeting was hosted by the Kohler Signature Store by Hughes Supply. This showroom is a great place to take clients as it provides a modern innovative experience, with a wide array of product lines, Ann Sacks tile, Kallista, Robern, as well as Kohler accessories from fluffy towels and wash clothes to bath accessories. During this event, we were treated to a first-hand look at their new product colors and product line. Attendees also learned about working with their in-house project consultants to help us in creating dream kitchen and bath spaces for our clients. With a large turn-out it was standing room only in the showroom, but it still felt spacious and we were treated to a wide array of Mexican fusion appetizers, with a nice choice of beer and wine. It was a wonderful evening, and it was exciting to view the Kohler products and lifestyle trends for the coming year.

JULY
CHAPTER MEETING
Our July Collaborative meeting was a huge success combining forces with other local design organizations including NKBA, NEWH, IIDA, IFDA, and NARI. This event was hosted by The Stone Collection, which features a beautiful showroom and slab yard of natural stone, Neolith, Caesarstone,Vetrazzo, and unique tiles from Unique Design Solutions (UDS) which are locally made. Our guest speaker for this event, was celebrity designer Christopher Kennedy who is well known for his mid-century modern aesthetic. He provided a wonderful presentation on "Modern Luxury" and shared several insights on how to better connect with clients and set expectations upfront. Christopher answered questions, mingled with guests and did a book signing of his latest book, Making Midcentury Modern.
The Stone Collection offered guests a beautiful spread of hors d’oeuvres, along with a carving station and a good selection of beer and wine. However, the standout of the evening was the Bavarian cream filled churros. They were such a hit that our guest speaker encouraged everyone to grab two or three. This evening was a wonderful way to bring all of our local design organizations together and provide an opportunity for designers across Phoenix to connect. A special thank you to Christopher Kennedy for traveling from Palm Springs to share his expertise with us, as well as the Stone Collection for being such gracious hosts.

Donuts & Dialogue
June 2022: The Art of Saying ‘No’-there is so much more to saying 'no' than a few simple tips and tricks
Mike Toney, leadership and sales trainer of Conquest Training Systems, shared valuable knowledge with the ASID audience attending our Donuts & Dialogue event. Mike has guided countless sales and business leaders in our community by coaching with the Sandler methodology.
Mike is a hands-on instructor and energetically engaged the audience from the outset of the event. It was fun to watch Mike list questions on the wall-mounted Dekton material (using it like a whiteboard) in the Tempe Cosentino showroom. We’ve been told this was possible and this was the moment of truth! Through role playing and audience participation, Mike reinforced the shared concepts and enabled us to practice in real-time. Here are just a few examples of the many “aha” moments we experienced: We develop our thought processes at an early age. Beliefs affect emotions > emotions affect thinking > thinking drives action. Examples of the type of thinking that hold us back are:
• Fear of rejection
• Wanting everyone to like you
• Connecting and sharing intimate information with someone causes us to think of them as a friend
• If you’re doing it for the right reason, ‘No’ isn’t a bad word
• Be your authentic self
• You can say anything to your client with comfort and confidence as long as you have their permission. If you ask your client for permission to be honest, then ownership is shifted to them.
• Address scope creep before it happens. Have a conversation before behavior patterns form. Set ground rules at the beginning of the relationship.
• If you determine a potential client is not a good fit for you and your business, don’t move forward with the project. (Mike shared verbiage that made this conversation easy and comfortable.)
Thank you, Mike Toney for generously sharing your expertise and knowledge with our membership. Also, we very much appreciate Kelly Dunlap, Industry Partner Rep for Cosentino, and the Cosentino team for hosting this informative and thoughtprovoking event. We were all equally impressed with Tony’s presentation as we were watching Kelly spritz and wipe the Dekton material clean – no trace of a marker to be seen!
CHAPTER NEWS 13 l DESERT DESIGN fall 2022
Professional Development
As your Professional Development Director, I strive to provide our chapter with relevant and interesting programming. In a regular year, this is quite a task, but doing the business of design in a changing world dealing with product shortages, long lead times, climate change issues and a struggling economy, it is even more challenging. As I work with our incoming board, I am excited and energized by the new people, new ideas and opportunities that come with the changing of the guard that happens every October 1st. The board is working on some exciting, fun things this year for our entire membership.
Here are a few things that we are putting together for you:
• We are bringing back our Student Career & Enrichment Day in February 2023. We are excited to provide an event for our student members to have an opportunity to gather and spend a day, gaining valuable information as they begin their design journey.
• We are also planning a Professional Development Day in the Spring of 2023. This will provide an opportunity for all to earn our necessary CEU’s and mingle with friends and colleagues for a day.
• We are working on monthly chapter meetings with our industry partners and professionals to provide you with relevant content that relates to your design businesses and issues.
• We are in the process of planning all these events now. Please look to our Buzz and website for more information in the upcoming months. If you would like to offer ideas or suggestions for any of the events we are planning, please reach out to me or any board member, we are always happy to hear from you.
• Lastly, it takes a village to make our chapter run smoothly and all our events successful. We are 8 people that have volunteered our time and efforts to lead this chapter into success. We can’t possibly do this work without all of you. We need your support of time and welcome anyone that is wanting to volunteer to support our efforts. Whether it’s for a small, specific task, or as a committee member, or a committee chair, we need your participation. Please reach out to a board member and we will be happy to find the right fit for you!
We are looking forward to a great year!

Estrella Cabinetry & Design Center is unique in the Valley in that it is completely full service as both a hybrid of design and trade. Laura Eagan, CKBD, CLIPP, the owner, is a licensed contractor thereby supporting the full service work we provide. Once a cabinet is involved, we oversee the entire selection and installation process, including countertops, backsplashes, plumbing fixtures, lighting, and plumbing and electrical services. This provides much peace of mind to the client, whether a professional designer or a homeowner, because they don’t have to find and oversee the trades themselves.
Estrella Cabinetry is located in Goodyear, Arizona in the lower west valley. Our talented team of seven is very knowledgeable in kitchen and bath and have years of experience to assist in anyway possible.
We have a wide range of cabinetry at many different price points, but the common element is that all materials are of the highest quality with lifetime warranties.
Estrella has won numerous design awards and has many projects outside of Arizona which includes Florida, California, Texas and New York.

It was a Thrill to Celebrate with You!
It was an honor to receive a special invitation to attend the 2022 ASID Design Excellence Awards Gala with Lauren Sturman the Publisher of Modern Luxury Scottsdale. This was a spectacular event that was held at the Westin Kierland Resort. It was exciting to see all the winners go up to the stage to accept their awards. What a thrill to celebrate with the big winners of the evening for the two coveted awards, Esther Boiven, Esther Boiven Interiors for Best of Show Residential and Katie Taratsas & Jaci Nicole Tino of Katie Bowe Design for Best of Show Commercial.
It was exciting to see Lauren making her big announcement that she was moving to Los Angeles and taking over the Modern Luxury Magazines there with a big promotion. I am thrilled to be back in the design community taking over as the new Publisher of Modern Luxury Interiors. I have been in the luxury design space for years having launched Luxe Interior + Design in 20072015. I spent years working all over the country and built a powerful network. I am really looking forward to continuing to support ASID and getting to know so many of you.
KELLY PERSELIN Publisher Modern Luxury Interiors
It is with a heavy heart that I recognize Tony Sutton. When I started the launch of Luxe, Tony was my very first appointment and his kindness and generosity that very first day made such an impact on me. I always loved having talks with him about design and what was going on in the industry. Many designers that went on to have big careers started with Est Est. He will be remembered for so many things as a true icon in the design industry and leaves behind an incredible legacy. My heartfelt condolences go out to his beautiful wife Esther, his amazing children and grandchildren. Heaven gained a design rockstar.
Congratulations again to all of the winners!

PAIGE LEWIS, Allied ASID
This year’s recipient is one whose passion for design was sparked as a young child touring model homes with her mother. This spark ignited a full- fledged love affair with interior design earning her a degree, followed by a practice of her own. Talent, hard work and perseverance led to a collection of design awards as well as numerous projects gracing the pages of a host of prestigious publications. A consummate patron of an array of charitable organizations, she has long been a stalwart supporter and volunteer of our chapter, tirelessly striving to keep our own publication, Desert

Jennifer Biffer, ASID presented the first ever ASID Lifetime Achievement Award
This award goes to a member whose career has spanned decades and positively impacted our chapter and the interior design footprint in the Valley. Someone who sets the bar professionally, personally, and creatively, gets involved in the chapter, and supports its members. Tony Sutton has been a force in the design landscape of the Valley for over forty years, spearheading several charitable organizations and co-founding the Tour De Noel, one of our chapter’s notable past fundraisers. In addition, he has mentored many of the best designers in our chapter and single-handedly created what our industry calls the Spec Book, setting the bar for how designers work with their team of architects and contractors.

This year due to Covid, we needed last-minute help with our most significant event in October and our first event as the new incoming board. CASA stands for Court Appointed Special Advocate and volunteers are paired with Children in the System to oversee their journey for two years and be an unbiased advocate for them in the court system as well as in their home life.
Diamond Sponsor ALYSHAAN FINE RUGS
The generosity of Alyshaan Fine Rugs is always amazing; this year, they went above and beyond for our charity Voices for CASA, matching funds raised up to $5,000.00. This made the total contribution to Voices for CASA $25,000.00. Our chapter simply could not be more proud to be part of an organization that gives back to those in need and to have partners like Alyshaan to help make that happen. This was all in addition to their general Diamond sponsorship and co-hosting of Colormix.
Media Partner MODERN LUXURY INTERIORS
The support of our media partner made so many of our events a phenomenal success this year, including the Designer Showhouse, Mix-NMingle, and the Design Excellence Awards. Lauren Sturman has been a huge source of support, and we are all sad to see her leave for California, but we wish her all the best in her new position. Taking the helm is Kelly Persellin. We know she will continue what is already a beautiful partnership.

A Passing Tribute
The Sutton family and Esther Boivin are heartbroken to announce the passing of Tony Wayne Sutton, who passed away three days after his sixty-seventh birthday on Thursday, October 6, 2022.
Tony was best known for his kind spirit and joie de vivre, for his love of travel, meeting up with his college fraternity brothers, tango dancing, hunting deer and spending time with his children and grandchildren. Tony believed everyone should give back to their community. He was involved with many charities and spent a lifetime mentoring aspiring designers. People often picture him wearing a colorful shirt behind the wheel of his beloved Corvette with his beautiful wife, Esther, by his side.
His passion was alive in everything he did, and his legacy will live on for eternity. There are no words to express how deeply Tony’s presence on this earth will be missed.

hazz Murillo moved to Phoenix from San Francisco in the spring of 2018 to go the legendary Southwest School of Woodworking where he earned his certification as a journeyman woodworker. He then went to work for Bang Bang Designs as a fabricator where he mastered the process of turning rough lumber into beautiful case goods. While working at Bang Bang he realized there was more to making furniture than just the wood working so he enrolled at Phoenix College to pursue a degree in interior design and to learn upholstery. His passion for sharing his knowledge of the design process landed him a position on the ASID board as the student representative where he welcomes the task of advocating the importance of being part of the ASID organization to all the students in the design field across the valley. He is very much looking forward to graduating and earning his NCIDQ certification so he can go back to where he started his journey, his woodworking bench.
