Su romance con Yanelly se desarrolla por medio del carpinteo: un lenguaje de señas creado por los propios internos, que va desde una ventana del pabellón de hombres al patio de mujeres. Pero todo transcurre a escondidas de Manaury, un reo muy peligroso que también carpintea con Yanelly.

Director: José María Cabral The film from the Dominican Republic is one of the most important Latin American productions in recent years. It takes a close look at the life of Julian, a young man who finds love and a reason to live in the most unexpected place: prison. He carries on a romance with Yanelly thanks to “carpinteo,” a sign language created by inmates to pass messages from a window in the men’s pavilion to the women’s patio. But their “romance” must all be carried out without the knowledge of Manaury, a dangerous inmate also interested in Yanelly.

Es un cineasta prolífico que inició su carrera en la adolescencia y ya ha realizado seis largometrajes, además de una extensa cantidad de cortometrajes. Thirty-year-old Dominican José María Cabral, who wrote and directed the film, is a prolific filmmaker who began his career in adolescence and has already made six features, as well as many short films. His recent El proyeccionista (The Projectionist) premiered this year at the Miami Film Festival.

Who invented them? A multidisciplinary group made up of biologists, engineers, and dentists from the University of Pennsylvania. The study was led by Hyun oo from the School of Dental Medicine and Edward Steager from the School of Engineering and Applied Science. It was recently published in the scientific journal Science Robotics.

Una tranquila caminata o tan solo un descanso de al menos veinte minutos diarios en un área al aire libre, en contacto con la naturaleza y libre de pantallas reduce significativamente la cantidad de hormonas relacionadas con el estrés. Quizá parezca obvio, pero ahora el efecto está cuantificado y, por tanto, puede ser recetado.

A peaceful walk or a break of at least twenty minutes a day in an outdoor area, in contact with nature and free of computer screens, significantly reduces the amount of stress hormones in a person’s body. It may seem obvious, but now that the effect is quantified, it can be prescribed.

¿Cómo lo saben? En un experimento de ocho semanas se controlaron los niveles de cortisol —la hormona del estrés— antes y después de que los participantes tomaran “dosis” de naturaleza de al menos diez minutos tres veces a la semana. Los participantes eligieron hora y lugar de este encuentro con la naturaleza, pero debían evitar ejercicio aeróbico, usar el celular y leer. Los controles se realizaron cada dos semanas. Tras analizar los datos de concentración de cortisona en la saliva, los investigadores pudieron determinar que veinte o idealmente treinta minutos diarios de contacto con la naturaleza son suficientes para reducir significativamente los niveles de esta hormona sin necesidad de medicina.

How do they know this? In an eight-week experiment, the levels of cortisol —the stress hormone— were monitored before and after participants took “doses” of nature for at least ten minutes three times a week. The participants chose the time and place of this encounter with nature, but they had to avoid aerobic exercise, the use of their cell phones, and reading. The controls were performed every two weeks. After analyzing the concentration of cortisone in the participants’ saliva, the researchers could determine that twenty ¬–or ideally thirty– minutes a day of contact with nature was enough to significantly reduce the levels of this hormone without the need for medicine.

Tren a las Nubes Train to the Clouds

no de los recorridos turísticos que ofrece Salta es una travesía hacia la puna, el desierto de altura. En 151 kilómetros se asciende de los mil metros sobre el nivel del mar a los 4.000. Al final del recorrido, San Antonio de los Cobres tiene el plato mayor: el Tren a las Nubes, un sistema ferroviario que llega hasta los 4.220 metros de altura y culmina con el increíble Viaducto de la Polvorilla, un tramo cuyo ángulo de curvatura es superior al semicírculo, lo que se conoce en ingeniería como “peraltado”.

Una aventura de cuatro días a través de la selva tropical, del océano Pacífico al mar Caribe, por la estrecha cintura de Panamá. Bote, cayuco, kayak, bicicleta y unos buenos ascensos a pie limpio hacen parte de esta expedición organizada por Mamoní Experiencia y Mamoní Valley.

A four-day adventure winds through the rainforest from the Pacific Ocean to the Caribbean Sea, taking travelers across Panama’s narrow “waist.” This expedition, organized by Mamoní Experiencia and Mamoní Valley Preserve, includes boat, canoe, kayak, and bicycle travel, as well as several challenging overland treks. 29

Somos un grupo de diez jóvenes interesados en descubrir en cuatro días los contrastes, la diversidad y las culturas que habitan los 84 kilómetros que separan estas costas de las del mar Caribe. Para lograr este cometido, cruzaremos el continente por la franja más estrecha y también más joven, aquella que al emerger del océano, hace millones de años, unió la tierra y separó los océanos ocasionando tantos cambios climáticos a escala global que incluso, según se atreven a especular los científicos, habría permitido la evolución del homínido hasta el aspecto que tenemos hoy.

his story begins in the Pacific, an enormously diverse nutrientrich ocean that covers a third of the Earth’s surface and forms one of the world’s largest fish reserves. I am part of a group of ten young people about to embark on a fourday discovery of the contrasts, diversity, and cultures along the 52-mile stretch of land that separates the Pacific from the Caribbean Sea. We’ll cross the continent’s narrowest and youngest strip of land, which rose up out of the ocean millions of years ago, joining land masses and separating oceans, causing such global climate change that scientists now believe the event made it possible for hominids to evolve into what we are today.

Para la travesía utilizaremos varios medios de transporte: bote al inicio por el Pacífico, cayuco en algunos tramos de manglar, bicicleta en las partes colonizadas, tracción humana (la nuestra) pura y dura en las cuestas más difíciles y kayak en descenso por los ríos. El recorrido inicia por la salida del Canal de Panamá en un bote de casi siete metros que nos llevará a Chinina, un pequeño poblado al este de la ciudad. El sol apenas se asoma y el grupo permanece en silencio. Hay exaltación, ansiedad, pero también actitud de contemplación. Para algunos de mis compañeros esta será la primera travesía de largo aliento frente a la naturaleza inhóspita.

The crossing will employ several means of transportation: a boat along the Pacific coast at the beginning; a canoe through several stretches of mangrove; a bike in more populated areas; good old-fashioned feet up the most difficult slopes; and a kayak to navigate the rivers. We begin the journey at the exit of the Panama Canal, in a 23-foot boat that will take us to Chinina, a small town east of Panama City. The sun is barely up and the group is quiet. There is excitement and anxiety in the air, but also an attitude of contemplation. Several of my companions are facing their first long journey through the wilds of nature.

Declarados Sitio Ramsar, reúnen uno de los más valiosos ecosistemas del planeta, donde tienen oportunidad de crecer una gran parte de las especies marinas. Por eso los llaman la guardería de peces. A manera de ceremonia, recogemos un poco de agua del Pacífico para, al final del recorrido, unirla de nuevo con la del mar Caribe, tal como estuvieron hace millones de años. Recorremos el laberinto de raíces hasta llegar a Chinina. Allí nos subiremos por primera vez a las bicicletas. Los pobladores nos despiden con música mientras iniciamos el recorrido por la carretera. Al comienzo de nuestro viaje el paisaje es árido: estamos en época de sequía y este es un bosque seco; pero no solo es eso, la sequía se debe principalmente al desarrollo de una ganadería sin conciencia ambiental. Hay muy pocos árboles y el calor es intenso. Al mediodía tenemos un merecido descanso y disfrutamos de un almuerzo envuelto en hojas de bijao, con

t’s time to board our canoe, which awaits us in an inlet, and cross the mangroves in the Bay of Panama, a distance of a little less than a half mile. Declared a Ramsar Site, these mangroves are one of the planet’s most valuable ecosystems and provide a breeding ground for a large number of marine species, which is why they are often referred to as a fish nursery. We perform a small ceremony, collecting a little water from the Pacific in order to return it, at the end of our travels, to the Caribbean Sea, reuniting waters separated millions of years ago. We move through a labyrinth of mangrove roots until we reach Chinina, where we climb onto our bicycles for the first time. Locals send us on our way with music and we ride on to the highway. The landscape at the beginning of the trip is arid. It’s the dry season and this is a dry forest, but there’s more to it: this drought is due mainly to the harmful environmental effects of livestock production. There are very few trees and the heat is intense. We take a well-deserved rest at noon to enjoy a lunch wrapped in bijao

Líder Sucre, ejecutivo de Geoversity, graduado en negocios en Harvard y, a la vez, el mejor guía naturalista con el que haya tenido la oportunidad de compartir, nos muestra la prueba fehaciente de que Panamá es un puente biológico entre dos continentes: la presencia de una garza cocoi —típica desde Panamá hasta Tierra del Fuego—, que bebe tranquila de las aguas del Bayano, muy cerca de una garza blue heron —muy parecida, pero sin el copete negro—, que habita desde Panamá hasta Canadá.

That afternoon, we cross several refreshing streams and, as the day ends, we come to the great Bayano River, which we cross by boat. Geoversity executive Líder Sucre is a graduate of the Harvard School of Business and the best nature guide I’ve ever had the pleasure of following. He points to a cocoi heron, a species endemic from Panama down to Tierra del Fuego, drinking quietly from the waters of the Bayano; he explains that the cocoi is very similar to the blue heron (minus its black tuft), found from Panama up to Canada, which is convincing proof that Panama is a biological bridge between two continents.

Luego de una merecida ducha, una excelente comida y una necesaria revisión por parte de nuestra paramédica Claribel Vanessa Samudio, nos vamos a dormir. Al día siguiente, Nathan Grey, director ejecutivo de Geoversity, nos recuerda que esto no solo es una aventura, es un viaje para sentir y conocer lo que está pasando con nuestra naturaleza. Nathan es un curtido líder social que desde hace más de cuarenta años trabaja con liderazgo juvenil.

We’ll make our first stop here, at the Yayita Riverside Lodge. After a well-deserved shower, an excellent meal, and a timely examination by our paramedic, Claribel Vanessa Samudio, it’s off to sleep. The next day, Nathan Gray, executive director of Geoversity, reminds us that this is not just an adventure, it’s a chance to see and experience what is happening to nature. Nathan, a seasoned social leader, has worked in youth leadership for more than forty years.

El camino pavimentado nos lleva suavemente hacia nuestro siguiente destino: unas verdes montañas que conforman el telón de fondo.

Es uno de los fundadores de Geoversity, un ecosistema de líderes y organizaciones que colaboran en la búsqueda de avances en el diseño humano, la empresa y la expresión creativa, inspirados en la naturaleza. Retomamos nuestros caballos de acero e iniciamos el recorrido por la carretera. Nada menos que la Panamericana, la vía que va de punta a punta del continente con casi 48.000 kilómetros, cuya única interrupción, de unos 130 kilómetros, está muy cerca de aquí, en la selva del Darién. El camino pavimentado nos lleva suavemente hacia nuestro siguiente destino: unas verdes montañas que conforman el telón de fondo. Y hasta allá llegamos. Hay colinas duras de subir. Vienen bien las palabras de Claus Kjaerby, nuestro capitán y guía: “Seguir. Siempre debemos seguir. Darlo todo hasta completar nuestro objetivo”. Entre colina y colina hay bajadas; y la bajada siempre es fácil. Divertida incluso. Sin embargo, una nueva subida no demora en aparecer para recordarnos que no todo aquí es un paseo.

The paved road leads smoothly to our next destination: the backdrop of green mountains.

He helped found Geoversity, an ecosystem of leaders and organizations collaborating in the pursuit of nature-inspired breakthroughs in human design, enterprise, and creative expression. We return to our “steel horses” and the highway, the Pan-American Highway no less, which runs from one end of the continent to the other. It is nearly 30,000 miles long, interrupted only for approximately 80 miles in the Darien jungle, not far from here. The paved road leads us gently to our next destination: the green mountains off in the distance. We eventually make it. There are difficult hills to climb, but we are spurred on by the words of Claus Kjaerby, our captain and guide: “Keep going! You have to keep going. Give it everything you’ve got until we reach our goal.” There are descents between hills, and coasting downhill is always easy. Fun even. However, there’s inevitably another hill to climb, reminding us that this trip is no cakewalk.

long the way, we meet Iniquiliqui, leader of the Guna Youth Congress, and Anna Gili, of the Mamoní Valley Preserve, whose vision is to turn this huge private reserve into a peaceful global haven, where plants, people, and animals from all over the upper Mamoní valley coexist harmoniously in a thriving rainforest environment. Near the end of the day we reach the Mamoní River in all its splendor; out of its crystal clear waters emerge enormous rocks in fascinating colors and shapes.

Another two hours on our bikes and we arrive at Mamoní Experience, an eco-learning adventure deep in the rainforest, created to provide a different experience. The facilities have been built from wood and bamboo and blend in with the surrounding forest, inspiring relaxation.

Tercer día. Está nublado, siento expectativa entre mis compañeros. Nos espera una caminata de diez kilómetros. Los primeros son una larga y tortuosa subida. El bosque lluvioso nos abraza y nos deleita con sus miles de sonidos.

Day 3. The sky is overcast and there is a sense of expectation among my companions. A six-mile hike awaits us. The first few miles are a long, tortuous climb. The rain forest embraces and delights us with thousands of different sounds.

El grupo guarda silencio. Y es que se requiere concentración y esfuerzo para llegar a la cima. Finalmente llegamos a la división continental: el lugar donde los ríos eligen su curso, el camino del Pacífico o el del Caribe. Pero esto no es solo una división de aguas, es también la separación de dos mundos: estamos dejando atrás el estilo occidental y encontramos al otro lado un pueblo indígena: la nación guna, con su propia cosmovisión. Y un mundo está destruyendo la forma de vida del otro. El de atrás causó el calentamiento global, y los gunas, que viven desde hace centurias en pequeñas islas, deben ahora pensar en trasladarse a tierra firme, pues su espectacular archipiélago está desapareciendo a causa del incremento del nivel del mar.

The group remains silent. It requires concentration and effort to reach the top. Finally, we arrive at the continental divide, where rivers choose their course, either toward the Pacific or the Caribbean. But it isn’t only a division of waters, this spot marks the separation of two worlds. We leave behind the Western world and venture toward the indigenous Guna nation, which has its own worldview. And the former world is destroying the latter’s way of life. The world we have just left behind created global warming and the Gunas, who have lived for centuries on small islands, are now being forced to move to the mainland, as rising sea levels causes their spectacular archipelago to sink.

We use several means of transportation –including boat, canoe, bicycle, human traction, and kayak– during the expedition.

El próximo punto es el río Cangandi, donde nuestros amigos de Mamoní Experiencia tienen listos los kayaks, nuestro próximo medio de transporte. Recibimos una breve explicación de cómo manejarlo, qué señales seguir, y comenzamos. El río nos lleva raudos, en medio de un bosque primario. El agua no está muy profunda debido al fenómeno de El Niño. En algunas ocasiones debemos bajar y ayudar al kayak. Cuando el río se pone calmo hay espacios para la contemplación: podemos disfrutar del entorno, escuchar los monos aulladores y ver las garzas pasar; pero, muy pronto aparece un rápido, es necesario bajar del kayak, luego remar, remar, y en algún momento de regreso otra vez la calma.

his is as far as Nathan goes with us. His farewell is lapidary: “Don’t wait for adults to clean up the mess; young people must take action now and the adults will follow your example. Don’t just accept the future they left us; take action to create the future you want.” Next comes the Cangandi River, where our friends from Mamoní Experience are waiting with kayaks, our next means of transportation. After a brief explanation of how to handle the vessels and the signals we’ll be using, we get started. The river moves us swiftly through the middle of a primary forest. The water isn’t very deep due to the El Niño phenomenon and at times we’re forced to get out and push. Calm stretches of the river allow for contemplation and we enjoy the surroundings, listening to howler monkeys and watching herons go by. But soon we approach rapids and are forced to get out of our kayaks again and then it’s back to paddling until, eventually, the calm returns.

At dusk, we reach a camp set up by our friends, the Gunas: hammocks in the forest. A quarter moon hangs in the sky. While Claus cooks over a wood fire, I search for Orion among the constellations. Frogs and cicadas begin their all-night concert. But just as I am feeling far from civilization, the sound of an airplane reminds me that very few pristine places remain on this planet.

Day 4. The jungle wakes, birds sing here and there, the river awaits. We have a long boat trip ahead of us to the Gan Igar community, one of the few Guna settlements on the mainland. The river is kinder today; on only a few occasions are we required to get out of the kayaks. We come to a beautiful ten-foot waterfall and form a line to pass the kayaks over to the other side before taking a dip and moving on. Two hours later, we arrive at Gan Igar.

Molas are fabrics stitched with complex designs and multiple layers using the reverse appliqué technique. We can’t stay long though because there’s still a long way to go. And so, backpacks over our shoulders, we walk for an hour until we reach the mangroves. There, we are met by typical Guna rafts, three quite large and another smaller, narrower one. I dare to choose the smaller one and soon realize how difficult it is to handle. I marvel at the mastery of my Guna companion at the helm. I try to help, but my movements alone bring water into the vessel and my partner is forced to bail, slowing us down even more. No longer feeling my legs, I finally spot the opening to the sea... “Just a few more strokes of the paddle and we’ll reach the Caribbean, our own little piece of the Atlantic,” I thought, spurring myself on.

Each community has its own national day, which appears on the calendar as a civic holiday. Manifestations of religion are likewise a reflection of Suriname’s multiculturalism.

The Basilica

The Minor Basilica San Pedro and San Pablo is, along with the Cathedral of Guyana, one of the largest wooden buildings in the world. Its construction began in 1883 and culminated in 1888. The church measures 328 feet long by 82 feet wide; the tower rises 115 feet into the air.

Cuando la economía se basaba en la mano de obra esclavizada, las plantaciones se sucedían una tras otra a ambos lados del alto Commeweijne y el medio-alto río Surinam. A partir de 1747, con la construcción del Fuerte Nuevo de Ámsterdam, las plantaciones se extendieron prácticamente hasta la desembocadura de estos ríos, un complejo de pantanos cuyo subsuelo está compuesto de lodo. Like most plantations, it was abandoned after the abolition of slavery; it was recently turned into a tourism complex.

When the economy was based on enslaved labor, plantations were common along the banks of upper the Commeweijne River, and the midupper Suriname River, in the north of the country. When the New Amsterdam Fort was built in 1747, plantations extended practically to the lower Suriname and Commeweijne River delta, a complex of swamps with mud subsoil. The Dutch figured out how to use the wetlands as a system of reservoirs and irrigation canals.

Para llegar a Saamaka es necesario sobrevolar el tupido bosque que cubre el 90% del territorio de Surinam. Abajo, a orillas del río Surinam, se encuentran Botopasi y Pikinslee, dos aldeas de negros cimarrones, “los maroons” que hacen parte de la Nación Saamaka. Esta es uno de los seis lugares donde aun habitan descendientes de aquellos africanos que nunca se conformaron con la condición de esclavos. Muchos huyeron apenas desembarcaron del largo viaje a través del océano y otros lo hicieron luego de sufrir muchas humillaciones. Representaron una fuerza tan poderosa, que la guerra que les declaró la colonia por más de cien años no pudo doblegarlos. Arriving in Saamaka takes visitors over the dense forest that covers 90% of Suriname. Below, on the banks of the Suriname River, stands this Maroon nation, which includes two villages, Botopasi and Pikinslee, which are still inhabited by descendants of Africans who refused to accept slavery. Many fled as soon as they set foot on land after crossing the ocean and others did so after suffering many indignities. The Maroons were so fierce that 100 years of war waged by the Colonial power was unable to subdue them. They gained their freedom and were granted land and territorial rights in 1760.

t has long been believed that the more contact an operation has with its customers, the less efficiently it runs. One solution that my colleagues and I have investigated is the introduction of operational transparency — the deliberate design of windows into and out of the organization’s operations to help customers understand and appreciate the value being created. To determine when and how to design such windows, managers must understand when and how customers want to open up operations to scrutiny and when they would prefer that work be undertaken behind the scenes.

Why does operational transparency seem to have a unique power? We found that when people saw the work going on behind the scenes, they perceived that more effort went into the delivery of the service. They also believed that the service provider had more expertise and was being more thorough. They appreciated that effort and quality, and in turn, they valued the service more.

Although companies generally strive to make services appear as effortless as possible, examples of organizations beginning to experiment with various forms of operational transparency are becoming more abundant. When customers use an ATM to withdraw money from their BBVA bank accounts in Spain, the ATM’s full-color screen displays visual representations of the currency being counted, sorted, and arranged for distribution. At most Starbucks drivethrough locations in the United States, the intercom has been replaced with a video monitor and camera system. When customers place an order, they come face-to-face with the barista as he or she rings up the order and marks instructions on each cup.

Consider the ubiquitous marketing practice of personalizing ads. Tami Kim, along with Kate Barasz (of HBS) and Leslie John, found that when companies are transparent about targeting online ads on the basis of things we’ve revealed about ourselves, we appreciate the personalization. But when the transparency instead shows that they customize ads according to things they’ve inferred about us, it makes us upset.

Bringing Operational Transparency to Your Organization Given all the potential advantages and pitfalls of operational transparency, managers should be thoughtful about how they implement it. They should consider the following factors in designing their initiatives:

What to reveal? A great place to start is to think about moments in the process that could be easily showcased with minimal effort. For example, one dessert-focused restaurant introduced operational transparency by suspending a tilted mirror from the ceiling above the pastry chefs who were plating and finishing desserts.

When to reveal? Transparency boosts value perceptions most when it reveals work as it is happening or just after it has been completed, rather than showing work that has not yet occurred.

How to reveal? Transparency implementations work best when they’re visual — ideally giving customers actual windows into the process so that there’s no question about the credibility of what’s being shown.

Sloths live a quiet life thanks to a green lichen that grows on their fur and the way they hang from trees, which makes them nearly invisible to predators. But the sloth’s sluggish nature works in its favor. When enjoying a succulent snack of leaves, or even when faced with a disturbance, it can turn its head almost 360 degrees, thus saving the energy required to move its entire body. The sloth is, without a doubt, nature’s own Bob Marley.

Sloths live a quiet life; thanks to a green lichen that grows on their fur and the way they hang from trees, they are nearly invisible to predators.

Of the four families of sloths that once existed, only two remain: Megalonychidae, which includes the oldest two-toed species of sloths, and the Bradypodidae family, with four species known as the “new” or three-toed sloths. The first family is divided into Choloepus hoffmanni, which inhabits Central America, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru and Choloepus didactylus, in South America. The PanAmerican or hermit sloth, which has a long tail and measures up to sixteen feet long, is thought to have evolved from the second family. Among the species in this family are the B. torquatus, which lives in Rio de Janeiro and Bahia; the B. tridactylus from the Amazon; the B. Variegatus in Central America, Mexico, and South America; and, finally, the B. Pygmaues, which is endemic to Panama and now on the critically endangered list.

Differences between the two families

La comida favorita del perezoso de tres dedos es la cecropia, árbol tropical muy común, aunque también se alimenta de otros como el barrigón, cuipo, indio desnudo y espavé.

The main differences are the animals’ size and weight. The two-toed sloth is over two and a half feet long and weighs up to 19 pounds while its three-toed cousin is about two feet long and weighs in at between 11 to 13 pounds. The other difference is right in the name: the two-toed sloth has two fingers on its front limbs and three on its back limbs, and the threetoed variety has three fingers on all limbs. The two-toed sloth has no tail, its fur is soft and brown, and its face is usually a lighter shade of brown. The three-toed sloth has a tail, rough gray fur, and its eyes are surrounded by a lighter “mask.” Both have sharp hooked nails that allow them to hang from branches and defend themselves. Strangely enough, when in danger they can move —at least for a moment— faster than a cat.

The three-toed sloth’s favorite food is the cecropia, a very common tropical tree, although it also enjoys others such as the barrigón, quipo, gumbo limbo, and wild cashew trees. Sometimes the two-toed sloth feeds on fruit. The pygmy sloth, endemic to Escudo de Veraguas Island in Panama, feeds on the red mangrove. Los perezosos son lentos, pero curiosos. Correa ha documentado que es muy común encontrar perezosos huérfanos: las crías intrépidas se sueltan de la mamá, se agarran de una rama débil, caen al suelo y pierden para siempre a su madre. Cuando los bosques están más deteriorados son más propensos a lastimarse, pues la falta de árboles disminuye las probabilidades de poder agarrarse de otra rama antes de caer.

Sloths are slow, but curious. Correa has documented how common it is to find orphaned sloths: the intrepid offspring let go of their mother, grab hold of a weak branch, fall to the ground, and lose their mother forever. The more deteriorated the forest, the more prone they are to injury, as the lack of trees decreases the chances of being able to grab another branch before falling.

Si la cría no se separa de inmediato de la madre, seguirá amamantándose hasta que la leche se envenene y morirá intoxicada. Debido a su popularidad, el tráfico ilegal y la caza furtiva de esta especie se han incrementado de forma considerable, sobre todo de las crías. Por eso en la APPC se trabaja para generar conciencia entre los turistas con respecto a estas malas prácticas. Con este propósito, su vecino y aliado, el Gamboa Rainforest Resort, ha construido instalaciones para que los turistas conozcan el proceso de rehabilitación de los perezosos, respetando sus espacios sin perturbar sus rutinas.

Due to the animal’s popularity, illegal trafficking and poaching of the species, especially the young, have increased considerably. The APPC works to raise awareness of these illegal practices among tourists. To assist them, a neighbor and ally, the Gamboa Rainforest Resort, has built facilities that let tourists become familiar with the sloth rehabilitation process while respecting the animals’ spaces and routines.

Del mismo modo que el perezoso, hay muchos animales que necesitan los árboles para poder vivir, pero la tala indiscriminada está acabando con nuestros bosques. Según un estudio de la revista Nature se estima que se talan 15.300 millones de árboles al año. Los humanos hemos reducido en un 46% el número de árboles desde el origen de la agricultura, hace 12.000 años. Es necesario un cambio de rumbo, hacia un planeta donde todos podamos coexistir.

Unfortunately, certain guests of the APPC program will never have the luxury of returning to the forest; without the opportunity to develop survival instincts with their mothers, they become so docile that they would be easy prey for other species. Like the sloth, many animals need trees to survive, but indiscriminate felling is destroying our forests. According to a study in Nature magazine, an estimated 15.3 billion trees are cut down annually. Humans have reduced the number of trees by 46% since the origins of agriculture 12,000 years ago. A change of direction is necessary, to move toward a planet where we can all coexist.

Alejandro García El dibujante-pájaro / The Artist-Bird En la obra de Alejandro García, el paisaje tradicional les da paso a hombres-pájaro, cielos-mares, árboles emplumados, huevosplanetas, caballos hechos de ramas al viento, montañas henchidas de venas de agua, en una cadena ininterrumpida de metamorfosis.

lejandro García (Colombia, 1983) es un hombre de abismos: el que se abre entre los picos de los Andes, adonde llega persiguiendo a un pájaro, el de la hoja virgen frente a su mano, el profundo e inescrutable de su mente. Vacíos que lo tientan una y otra vez. Cuando cae, se sostiene con las líneas de su lápiz. Son las tramas de carboncillo que extiende entre esos abismos las que crean la superficie donde sucede su misterioso y siempre mutable universo. En este tercer milenio donde los caminos del arte han roto con la figuración, la academia, los lenguajes tradicionales; García, en contravía, acude a la antigua técnica de grabar sobre un soporte. Retorna así a aquella práctica milenaria usada desde las cuevas de Altamira: dejar una huella de tinta para rehacer el mundo. No necesita más: nada de tecnologías de vanguardia, efectos especiales o teorías estéticas. Porque para conquistar abismos hay que andar ligero. lejandro García (Colombia, 1983) is a man of the abyss: the abyss that stretches between Andean peaks, where he chases after birds, the abyss of the blank page under his hand, the deep and inscrutable abyss that is his mind. Voids tempt him again and again. And when he falls, he clings to his pencil lines, the charcoal stretching across the abyss to create a surface for his mysterious and ever-changing universes. In this third millennium, when artistic paths have broken away from figuration, academia, and traditional languages, Garcia swims against the tide and employs the ancient technique of etching. He returns to the millenary practice, employed since the time of the Altamira caves, of imprinting in ink to remake the world. He needs nothing more, no avant-garde technology, special effects, or aesthetic theories, because to conquer the abyss you must tread lightly. Garcia needs only his eyes, his hands, his imagination, and a black pencil and white paper, upon which, like prehistoric man, he creates a different order. His desire is to reconnect with nature and suture the wounds that Western culture has inflicted upon her.

En su obra, el paisaje tradicional les da paso a hombres-pájaro, cielos-mares, árboles emplumados, huevos-planetas, caballos hechos de ramas al viento, montañas henchidas de venas de agua, en una cadena ininterrumpida de metamorfosis. He does not represent a man, an animal, a river, each in a separate compartment. In Alejandro García’s work, the traditional landscape gives way to man-birds, sky-seas, feathered trees, planet-eggs, horses made of branches in the wind, and mountains swollen with watery veins, all in an uninterrupted chain of metamorphosis. Man and animal are no longer placed in a landscape. Now, each is itself jungle, leaf storm, and cosmos, as in mythology. And García has his own mythology, in which the bird is king. As an admirer of the cordilleras of Colombia, he has flushed them out obsessively, reverently. He is intrigued by their freedom, their silence, their forms. The movement of his pencil trails along their nests, which are also lines; their tracks, which are also marks; and their feathers, which are also fabrics (because the bird is also a draftsman). He has composed operas with birdsong (Método para ser un ave / Method to Be a Bird, El misterio del sueño de las aves / The Mystery of the Bird’s Dream).

Se da en esa anatomía imaginada un choque entre el cuerpo civilizado y el salvaje del animal indomable, que gracias a la poesía se resuelve mansamente. Entonces ella, como soprano y ave, empina altiva su pico, lo abre y un canto de la naturaleza plena explota en los ojos del espectador. Las leyes de los tratados anatómicos y de la clasificación de las especies del siglo XIX se derrumban en la rebeldía de esta nueva diosa y su monstruosa e inclasificable belleza. Un dibujito de apenas veinte centímetros (tamaño de pájaro) que estremece las categorías del pensamiento.

The leafy feathers of the lower portion of La cantante (The Singer) are cinched into a narrow waist out of which the torso of this woman with theatrical hands and a powerful bird head emerges. And in this imagined anatomy, a clash occurs between the civilized body and the savage, indomitable animal. It is gently resolved through poetry. Both soprano and bird, she proudly raises her beak, opens it, and a song of nature explodes before the eyes of the spectator. Nineteenth century laws of anatomy and classification collapse in the wake of this new goddess and her monstrous, unclassifiable beauty. A (bird size) drawing, measuring a mere twenty centimeters, which makes all categories of thought tremble.

Encuentros inesperados entre tradiciones gastronómicas, deleitosos maridajes y fusiones que asombran al comensal parecen estar a la orden del día en los muchos restaurantes de buena cocina de la capital colombiana. A los nombres ya ampliamente conocidos, como Harry Sasson, Leo Katz, Leonor Espinosa, los hermanos Rausch o Andrés Jaramillo viene a sumarse un nuevo clan de inquietos e imaginativos chefs.

Unexpected encounters between diverse culinary traditions and astonishing and delicious pairings and fusions seem to be the order of the day at so many great restaurants in the Colombian capital. The names of the dishes pay homage to this spirited element, including Queen of the River (trout marinated for 48 hours); Potato Prairie (indigenous potatoes served with spicy cured beef, goat cheese, and Sriracha mayo); and Lomo Saltado (beef with indigenous potatoes). Su sorpresa fue épica cuando encontró, entre otros, el aguacate hass, los cubios, las hormigas santandereanas y las uchuvas. Pato rostizado, aguacate osmotizado impregnado de cerveza michelada, relleno de carne desmechada y con cáscara comestible o un filete de ahuyama asada son parte de su oferta.

a idea era sacarlas de bambalinas. Mostrarlas con sus dudas, sus ideales, sus luchas. Escuchar sus voces. Sentir en piel viva sus insistencias. Regocijarse con sus victorias, que además eran victorias para muchas. Citadinas sin bambalinas es un libro concebido en el marco de la celebración de los quinientos años de fundación de la Ciudad de Panamá, que quería rescatar del olvido la historia de las mujeres que han vivido en esta ciudad frente al mar en distintas épocas y en sus circunstancias particulares, para “recorrer” con ellas la historia de un país que, como la de muchos otros, casi siempre se ha contado desde la perspectiva masculina. El resultado es un conjunto de ochenta historias ficcionadas que, como dice el escritor Héctor Collado, acerca “con ternura a los niños y a los jóvenes al conocimiento del quehacer de aquellas que nos precedieron”. Un libro donde puede leerse cómo la historia está atravesada y formada por mujeres que construyeron pensamiento y acción y que, aunque está pensado para los más pequeños, igual lo disfruta un adulto porque los textos “están llenos de riesgos y de propuestas de cambio” —como resalta el también escritor Javier Stanziola— que buscan remover estereotipos tan naturalizados que a veces ni se cuestionan. Citadinas sin bambalinas está, además, bellamente ilustrado por más de sesenta artistas que, muy a su estilo, interpretaron cada uno de los textos escritos por Lilmaría Herrera, Consuelo Tomás y Martanoemí Noriega, esta última también ilustradora. De la primera edición de Citadinas se imprimieron 750 ejemplares de tapa dura y ¡se han ido todos! Una segunda edición de mil ejemplares se espera en junio, así que ¡atentos! he idea was to bring women into the spotlight, to present women and their doubts, ideals, and struggles. Listen to their voices. Put ourselves in their shoes, try to persevere as they did. Rejoice in their triumphs, which were also triumphs for many others. The book Citadinas sin bambalinas (Panama City: Women into the Spotlight) was conceived as part of the celebrations marking the 500th anniversary of Panama City. It is an attempt to recover the stories of the women who lived a particular reality in this seaside city, offering a different take on the country’s history, which has nearly always been told from a male point of view. The result is an ensemble of eighty novelized biographies that, in the words of writer Héctor Collado, “gently introduce children and young people to the deeds of those who came before them.” The book demonstrates how women’s thoughts and actions are interwoven throughout history; although it is aimed at children, adults will find the book equally enjoyable, since the texts “show risks and ideas for change,” as noted by writer Javier Stanziola. It is an effort to break down stereotypes that are so ingrained they are often taken for granted. Citadinas sin bambalinas is beautifully illustrated by more than sixty artists who reveal their own styles in their interpretations of the texts written by Lilmaría Herrera, Consuelo Tomás, and Martanoemí Noriega, who is likewise an illustrator. The first print edition of 750 hardcover copies of Citadinas sold out. Keep an eye out for the second edition of 1000 copies in June. The women of Panama City will win you over.

odo empezó con El gato con botas. Lilmaría no tenía forma de saberlo entonces, pero ahora reconoce que su primer encuentro con la literatura se produjo cuando su papá, Alfonso Herrera y Franco, le leía con paciencia infinita el popular cuento de origen francés, una y otra vez. Luego vendrían las anécdotas sobre la provincia de Darién, esa tierra llena de selva, gentes y comidas que le parecían fantásticas; las biografías gordas de personajes célebres que había escrito su abuelo y las cartas que, a mano y en el más formal de los estilos, debía contestar a un tío que vivía en Argentina. Lilmaría creció entre cuentos, y cuando se hizo adulta no sabía qué ser. O cómo. Quiso ser taxista, policía, cajera. Estudió derecho y se desencantó. Se imaginó en el mar, como otro tío que fue marino y cirquero. “Siempre he admirado a la gente que hace muchas cosas y, sin quererlo, ese fue mi camino”, dice ahora, vía telefónica, desde el rincón chiricano en el que ha elegido vivir. El camino se le fue despejando cuando, mientras estudiaba Periodismo, se dio cuenta de que lo suyo era escribir. Luego trabajó como maestra de preescolar y supo que le gustaban los niños. Más tarde laboró en la Biblioteca Nacional y allí, mirando las sesiones de cuentacuentos del escritor Héctor Collado, se dijo: “Oye, yo quiero hacer eso”.

t all began with Puss in Boots. Lilmaría had no way of knowing it then, but she now recognizes that her first encounter with literature was listening to her father, Alfonso Herrera y Franco, patiently reading her the popular French classic over and over. Then would come the stories about the province of Darién, that land of fantastical jungles, people, and foods; the thick tomes of biographies of celebrated people penned by her grandfather; and the letters, handwritten in the most formal of styles, to an uncle who lived in Argentina. Lilmaría grew up surrounded by stories, but once she reached adulthood, she did not know what to do. Or how. She wanted to be a taxi driver, a police officer, a cashier. She grew disenchanted with the study of law. She imagined herself at sea, like another uncle who was a sailor and acrobat. “I have always admired people who do many things, and without trying to, I ended up being like that,” says Lilmaría Herrera by phone from her little corner of Chiriquí. Studying journalism gave her a clearer vision ― she realized that writing was her calling. Working as a preschool teacher taught her that she liked children. She later worked at the National Library, where she watched writer Héctor Collado’s storytelling sessions and said to herself: “Hey, I want to do that.”

onsuelo Tomás ha hecho preguntas indeseables. Le ha escrito al olvido, a la risa y a otras propensiones. Se ha negado a rendirse. En su último libro de poemas, “juega” con el epitafio y saluda a la muerte. Nacida en Isla Colón, la escritora panameña vivió hasta los tres años en su natal Bocas del Toro hasta que un día su padre decidió mudarse a la capital, para que “tuviéramos una buena educación y viviéramos más cómodos”. En ese entonces, explica, en la isla no había ni acueducto. Fue así como terminó “trasplantada” en la ciudad, si bien cada verano se iba a su tierra con sus hermanos para, nada más llegar, quitarse los zapatos y “soltarnos como si fuéramos bestias” a disfrutar del campo y de la playa.

onsuelo Tomás poses uncomfortable questions. She writes about oblivion, laughter, and other propensities. She refuses to give up. In her latest book, she “plays” with epitaphs and tips a wink to death. Born on Isla Colón, the Panamanian writer lived in her native Bocas del Toro until the age of three, when her father decided to move the family to the capital “to give us a good education and a more comfortable life.” She remembers that the island did not even have running water at the time. That’s how the Panamanian poet was “transplanted” to the capital, but every summer she and her siblings headed back to their birthplace to kick off their shoes and “let loose like wild things...” to enjoy the countryside and the beach.

Siendo así, era casi natural que fuera una de las autoras de la obra reseñada. Sobre su importancia dice: “Citadinas sin bambalinas hace justicia a la memoria de grandes mujeres que hicieron mucho, no solo por la ciudad sino por el país, en momentos en que ellas enfrentaban inmensos obstáculos para ser protagonistas en la vida pública. Es un documento de investigación; un libro artístico, porque incluye artistas de la plástica; y didáctico, pero de un modo lúdico”.

Given this, it was almost inevitable that she would become one of the authors of this work, which is important to her: “Citadinas sin bambalinas does justice to the memory of great women who did a lot, not only for the city, but for the country, at a time when they faced enormous obstacles to taking part in public life. With its inclusion of visual artists, this book is a work of both research and of art, not to mention being educational, but in a playful way.”

l principio, Martanoemí fue publicista. Ideaba para que otros compraran cosas que no necesitaban, y muy pronto aquella vorágine la inundó de dilemas. Por eso empezó a tomar sopa. De brócoli, para más señas. Mucha, siempre acompañada de un libro.

artanoemí started out in advertising. She invented ways to make other people buy things they didn’t need and a whirl of confusion soon overwhelmed her. That is why she started to eat soup. Broccoli, to be precise. A lot of soup, always accompanied by a book.

En esas estaba cuando en medio de un sorbo y otra tristeza, cayó en sus manos el poemario Todo en regla. Miró el nombre de la autora: Lilmaría Herrera. “Cuando la conocí le dije que me había gustado tanto el libro que quería ilustrarlo”, cuenta.

One time, in between a spoonful of soup and a taste of sadness, the poetry collection Todo en regla (Everything in Order) fell into her hands. She noticed the name of the author: Lilmaría Herrera. “When I met her, I told her I liked the book so much that I wanted to illustrate it,” she tells us.

De aquel encuentro nacieron sueños y estrellas: la editorial cartonera Pelo Malo, los versos en los murales, el proyecto Cuentos para rodar. La publicidad es ahora solo un recuerdo, porque los días de Martanoemí transcurren pensando en cómo será la mejor manera de ilustrar este libro, aquel festival, aquella pared de barrio.

That encounter birthed dreams and shining stars including the socio-political and artistic publishing house Pelo Malo, verses on walls, and the Cuentos para rodar project. Advertising is just a memory now and Martanoemí’s days are filled with thoughts of the best way to illustrate this book, that festival, that neighborhood wall over there.

En Citadinas sin bambalinas, Martanoemí fue la coordinadora del equipo de ilustradores, ilustradora ella misma de doce cuentos y escritora. Sobre el valor del libro dice: “No solo es importante porque rescata la historia de todas estas mujeres, sino que lo hace de una forma refrescante por la forma de contarlas y por las ilustraciones”.

Martanoemí Noriega, coordinator of the Citadinas sin bambalinas team of illustrators, is a writer who has also illustrated twelve books. She feels this is a significant work: “It is important not only because it recovers the history of all these women, but because it is a fresh way of telling their stories, enhanced by illustrations.”

Llamada coloquialmente bici, cicla, cleta, birula o chancha en diferentes partes de América Latina, poco a poco la bicicleta se convierte en un símbolo de progreso ambiental y libertad individual. Hace 202 años, el alemán Karl Drais fabricó la primera bici de madera, sin pedales y que se empujaba con los pies, abriéndole paso a la bici segura de 1885, registrada por el inventor inglés John Starley, quien le puso dos ruedas del mismo tamaño, pedales, cadena y frenos. Hoy este maravilloso invento pasa a ser un medio de transporte que compite con el carro. Según estadísticas recopiladas por Worldometers, en la actualidad existen más de un billón de bicicletas en el mundo; esto es, más del doble que automóviles.

A veces la deja permanecer quietecita para sorprenderla apagando de súbito la luz de la habitación. Ha recorrido millares de kilómetros bajo el sol cuarteante, busca arrinconarla hasta el cansancio para deshacerse de ella mediante un solo machetazo fulminante. Cerró cientos de puertas antes de que ella pudiera pasar delante o detrás de él. Y siempre ha resultado inútil tanto esfuerzo.

Tips for Healthy Travel: • Get a good night’s sleep and rest as much as possible during your flight. • Try to stick to your normal sleep schedule as much as possible during your trip. You may find it refreshing to take short, thirty to forty minute naps as you adjust to a new time zone. • Drink plenty of water and/or juice before and during your flight. • Eat light meals during your flight, and limit or avoid caffeinated beverages and alcohol. • Don’t stay in one position for too long; perform the simple stretches shown on the right, and take short walks when possible. • Wear loose, comfortable clothing and shoes.
