Letter from the Rector “To plant trees, under whose shade you do not expect to sit”. This old adage from Nelson Henderson is an exhortation to live our lives in a spirit of transcendence, aware that the good we desire has deep roots, requires time to mature, and is the fruit of the efforts and commitment of those who planted the seed. This is to a large part the work of the teacher and also all those who day after day play their part in transforming society through our students, their ideas and ideals, transforming them into concrete actions. This year has been one of sowing seeds, as we have started studies in Gastronomy, Criminology and International Relations. A new tree, still growing, has started to bear its fruits and the UFV’s International Business School and ADEN have already seen the graduation of their first students.

4  |  UFV Annual Report 2014-15

In the area of research, Inmaculada Puebla Sánchez and Daniel Ballesteros Calderon have obtained their Doctorates at the UFV, while another eight of our professors have done likewise at other universities. The Universidad Francisco de Vitoria is gradually earning itself deserved recognition for offering quality education with a difference. As opposed to the instruction and control inherent in other paradigms, this university bases its teaching philosophy on inspiration and accompaniment, while never losing sight of our demanding objectives. We firmly believe in showing our students all that they are capable of achieving in all areas of life, inviting them to lose themselves in the service to others and accompanying them along their journey. Having answered this calling, many of our students have lived their university years to the full.

Among them, of special note is Miguel Revuelta Espinosa, a Computer Engineering student, whose efforts have been recognised with the Optimus Award. And so we embark on another year’s adventure, sowing seeds with the untiring transcendental spirit I earlier referred to, well aware of our responsibility, excited about our mission and convinced that it as necessary to put all our efforts into its success as it is to look to Heaven and ask He, who is capable of all, to bless our efforts and reward them with yet more fruits.

Daniel Sada Castaño.

Most highly-valued lecturers by the students, 13-14. Since its beginnings as a Centre Attached to the Universidad Complutense in Madrid, the UFV has carried out teaching faculty evaluation by means of surveys to its students. This evaluation has always been for the good of the teaching staff, as the information obtained allows for an accurate appreciation of their work, the areas in need of improvement being identified and solutions found in readiness for the following academic years.

Le Cordon Bleu

Fundación Altius Francisco de Vitoria

After opening its doors on our campus in 2011, it has grown to be the French culinary institution’s third-largest centre, behind Paris and London. Le Cordon Bleu was founded in the city of Paris in 1895 and now has more than 50 schools in 20 countries.

This is the UFV’s Foundation, carrying out the university’s mission by means of social action caring for the most vulnerable groups within our society with the aim of ensuring their social, work and cultural integration.

The School finished this last academic year with 879 students enrolled in its courses on haute cuisine.

Of the many social actions it carries out, of note is the ongoing ‘1 Kilo of Help’ initiative and the the social accompaniment project, ‘I Cook Up Employment’, which is carried out in partnership with the Madrid Food Bank and has as its objective the finding of work for society’s most vulnerable groups.

Higher Vocational Training Centre Francisco de Vitoria - CETYS By means of Higher Vocational Training, CETYS provides the alternative to a University Degree, the options being the two main educational avenues open to those seeking higher education in Spain. After two years’ practical, hands-on training, the Higher Technician certificates awarded in the speciality studied are official, and allow subsequent direct access to university degree study. Moreover, at the UFV, we have a range of dynamic content validation plans, depending on the studies that each student has just completed. Logically, the University Degrees and Vocational Training Certificates link together extremely well. In the academic year 2014-15, 95 students went on to study a Degree course at the UFV after having completed their Higher Vocational Training with CETYS. UFV Annual Report 2014-15  | 19
