Editor’s Note Hi everyone! Me again with your monthly/weekly/daily dose of inspiration from the month that just went by. Before I get into the theme we have chosen for our May issue, I would just like to say a big “Thank You” to my team who have been working harder than ever to help me put together this awesome thing we call b* creative. I would like to say a special “Thank You” to my Music Columnist, Marja Barisic, who has finally set one of our other dreams into motion, by organising the recording of our band’s demo CD. For those that didn’t know, Marja and I have been together in a band called “23 Reasons” for more years than we’d like to admit (considering our first demo has only just been recorded). I’d love to go into more detail about it now, but then there’d be nothing for her to do when she writes a column about it in the months to come :) – besides, suspense is half the thrill. Speaking of thrills, we are ecstatic about this month’s issue and all of the inspiration that we have lined up for you. A feature artist I’d particularly like to draw your attention to is Michael Kutsche, award winning Conceptual Artist and Illustrator, who was the character designer on Tim Burton’s “Alice In Wonderland”. We were delighted when Michael agreed to do an interview for b* creative and we wish him all the best on his next project “John Carter of Mars”(2012), directed by Andrew Stanton. Someone else we’d like to particularly wish all the luck in the world to is John Mark Herskind, initiator of Designers Against Child Slavery (DACS) Project and muse for the May theme of b* creative. This young man is a true inspiration and, at only 17, he is doing so much more for humanity than the average teenager. Teaming up with The Blind Project, a non-profit aimed to restore and reveal the true value of those exploited by the commercial sex trade, John Mark and colleague Chris Valentine, have started DACS in order to help those less fortunate than themselves. DACS is a Design Collective that enables creatives from all over the world to rise up against the child sex trade. The aim is to see just how effective artists can be when they start breaking the boundaries of culture, race, religion, and backgrounds to unite for a just cause, and use their unique styles and talents to give a voice to the voiceless. Apart from the fact that we believe in the fantastic cause of the DACS project, we also place special emphasis on the DACS feature because we have based the majority of the inspiration in this issue around that central theme. With the risk of coming across as a little bit “dark” this month, we believe that there isn’t enough importance placed on the human sex trade topic and that we all need to pay more attention and get involved. Apart from being the main feature of the May issue, the b* creative contribution to the DACS project will also be this month’s front cover by our Illustrator, Robin Va’auli, which will have been sent off for the “Exposé” gallery event by the time that you read this. If you are an artist who wants to help out and get involved, please feel free to contact John Mark Herskind and Chris Valentine for further information on how to do so. And just before I head off on a search to find the latest and greatest of inspiration for the June issue, I have to mention that our “Celebrating 100 With A Small Giveaway” competition has been a total success. We’ve had many entries from all around the world and it was difficult to choose only twenty to put through to the finals – but somehow our judges managed. To quickly refresh your memory, we announced the “Celebrating 100 With A Small Giveaway” competition when our Facebook group reached the 100 member mark. The call for entries required that artists: 1. Create a piece of work that has the number 100 or the words “one hundred” in it. 2. Send it to b_creative_2010@hotmail.com by 15/05/2010. 3. Become a facebook friend with Bcreative Here. We said that once the 20 finalists have been chosen, we would put their work in an album titled “Celebrating 100 With A Small Giveaway Competition” via the Bcreative Here Facebook profile, and everyone who is friends with us will have a chance to vote for their favourite piece of work via the “like” function. The artist whose work is amongst the top 10 who have the most “likes” will receive our b* creative button as a prize. On our website we stated that voting will be open until the 15/06/2010, but we have decided to extend that date to the 01/07/2010 because it has been tricky to choose the finalists and we want to give everyone a fair go to have people vote for their work. That would be about it from me for this month and again I’d like to send out a great big “Thank You” to all of the artists that have agreed to do the interviews. In addition I’d like to add that you can follow up on any of the artists or projects that you see in b* creative by finding a corresponding web address in the “references” section of the magazine, to the number on each piece of work (or in the case of the features, simply following the stated ‘url’s). I hope that our contribution to the DACS project has been helpful and that you will all enjoy this month’s issue as much as the last. Don’t forget to – Imagine. Believe. Create. Achieve. Baki

There are few as young as John Mark Herskind that set out to make a difference in the world. This young man born and raised in Columbia, South Carolina and is a student who claims to be obsessed with Graphic Design. It is from this passion for creativity and a need to help those less fortunate than him, that Designers Against Child Slavery (DACS) was born. With help and guidance from The Blind Project, who have been more than generous by providing the b* creative team with the photographs used to accompany this feature article, John Mark says that they work together very closely and have given him amazing advice and been with him every step of the way. We contacted John Mark Herskind to tell us more about his fantastic cause.

Tell us about DACS: how it came about, why you’re doing it and what others can do to get involved? Designers Against Child Slavery Started out as a passion for children enslaved in the global sex trade. It’s basically a group of designers and artists devoted to raising awareness about human trafficking through art and design. Designers Against Child Slavery enables creatives from all over the world to rise up against the sex trade. We want to see just how effective artists can be when they start breaking the boundaries of Culture, race, religion, and backgrounds to unite for a just cause, and use their unique styles and talents to give a voice to the voiceless. An estimated 1.2 million children are trafficked every year, and those children range in ages between 6 to 18 years old. In very rare cases they have been found as young as 3 and 4 years of age. What’s really sad is that studies have shown that 50-90% of children rescued from brothels in Southeast Asia are infected with HIV. Obviously the sex trade inflicts untold emotional and physical damage to these young souls, many of which suffer long term physical and mental conditions even after they have been released from the clutches of slavery. So what can we do about this?

12

Designers Against Child Slavery was started because no child, and no human deserves to go through what these people suffer on a daily basis. Because Chris and I (John Mark Herskind) are young, we can’t necessarily fly over to Southeast Asia and make some huge impact on human trafficking. But what we can do is raise awareness with the hopes of

inspiring someone who can do more than us. So what we do is use our talents, and call on others to use their talents to spread the word about Sex Trafficking. Now, Designers Against Child Slavery is not a religious group. We invite anyone, from any religion to joins and raise awareness. We have specifically decided NOT to tag our group to a particular religion just because many people get turned off to the idea when religion enters the picture. With that being said, Chris Valentine and I would call ourselves Christ Followers and we cannot pass up this opportunity without saying that Jesus is the reason we do this. It’s not about a list of rules we as Christians follow, but its more about the fact that Jesus calls us to love. For us, it’s all about showing love to people who need it. You will never see us push our religion on anyone, look down on anyone who has differing views or judge anyone else’s religion. That’s just not how we roll :)

Designers Against Child Slavery is a recent group. We rely on the help of generous donors and passionate individuals willing to give their time in order to make a difference. For anyone wanting to get involved, the best way is to educate yourself on the topic and tell your friends and family about the injustices going on all around the world. Naming, branding, and packaging was all created in the studio. “A simple and little idea of packing for honey. We tried to treat jar as a playground for a character design. Dark cap and stripes made the idea quite clear. Through this project we tried to encourage kids to reach for honey instead of refined sugar. Especially for them we create logo which smiles bee’s face. It’s hand calligraphed, custom made, and it softens the overall simple, geometric look of the packaging.” - Megan Cummins

Featuring: Michael Kutsche

Do you remember when you were little and when you first heard that enchanting story about the girl who fell down the rabbit hole? Chances are the story was either read or told to you, and the fantasy movie was left up to your imagination to create – the smile of the Cheshire Cat, the colour of the Mad Hatter’s coat... Well when Tim Burton’s movie of “Alice in Wonderland” was being made, it’s no surprise that the Walt Disney Pictures crew chose Michael Kutsche to do the character design. Michael is is an award-winning Conceptual Artist/ Illustrator and 3d Artist located in Los Angeles who has worked for the vfx industry since 1998. His experiences reach from art directing and animating commercials and music videos to character design for feature film projects. Since finishing work as the character designer on “Alice in Wonderland”(2010) Michael has moved on to work on “John Carter of Mars”(2012), directed by Andrew Stanton. We have been lucky enough to get in contact with Michael to tell us a little bit more about himself and his authentic visual style.

Name, surname and place of residence. Michael Kutsche, Los Angeles, California.

What sparked your passion for illustration/ graphic design / art? I guess I’ve been drawing before I was even being able to walk, I think when I was very young it was some kind of capturing of things that I couldn’t possess. I remember being this 5 year-old looking up at the way too high rack at the news stand in the supermarket, seeing those Heavy Metal covers decorated with art by Richard Corben, Enki Bilal, Paolo Eleuteri Serpieri and the like. I was too young to get my hands on those mags at that time, so back home I would recall what I saw and draw it. But I was always very influenced by fine art as well, I guess because my father took me to museums early on. I’m still in between these two worlds, the pop culture oriented entertainment art and the fine art world.

I like the area where these two worlds meet, though for the most part they seem to have opposing positions.

Where do you draw your inspiration from when you set out to create a new piece? It can be anything from nature to art or surfing the web, reading the newspaper or a weird state of mind when I wake up. If you could describe your work in 3 (or 5) words, what would they be? Futuristic, Surreal, Ironic. What sort of education have you had? I’m a self taught artist. Tell us your philosophy on creativity. Everybody can become better with technique through practice, but good art has to do more with reflection of life so you’ve got to go out there and make your experiences. Otherwise your art will be like a beautiful looking box, beautiful but empty. Whose work do you admire and why? Lucian Freud, Stanley Kubrick, Chris Cunningham. Their imagery is stunning, but above that there’s something that scratches on something which is a lot deeper than words can describe. What has been your greatest achievement so far? Developing a style that is somewhat authentic. And being the character design on Tim Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland. What are your plans for the future? Keeping track of my personal projects, which include an exhibition in Paris, and a graphic novel. What is your advice for aspiring creatives? Work hard but be careful not to lose your connection to the world surrounding you. michaelkutsche.com michaelkutsche.deviantart.com/gallery michaelkutsche.blogspot.com

Adorable work from Chris Piascik: “I recently worked with Moth Design and Alphabet Arm to illustrate these fun shoe boxes for Morgan & Milo, a children’s show company located in Boston. The boxes are designed to promote recycling and encourage the end user to keep the box. They are covered with puzzles, games, mazes, riddles, quotes and fun characters. They are kraft boxes screen printed with white and green. As you can imagine this was a very fun project to work on. Mia at Morgan & Milo is fantastic as is everyone at Moth and ABC.”

Featuring: Sam Werczler

When we discover an artist with a unique style, we get attached to their work with a sense of super-glue affection! Sam Werczler, from São Paulo, Brazil, is one such artist. Since first coming into contact with his work on the Behance network, we have been following Sam and his success with pride. If you look back at our first issue, you will notice one of his distinct masterpieces. This month, we got in contact with Sam and asked him to tell us a little bit more about himself so that you, too, can have an opportunity to see what we love about him and his creations. Name, surname and place of residence. Sam Werczler - São Paulo, Brazil What sparked your passion for graphic design / photography / illustration/ writing / art? I like to draw since I was a child. My first steps was throw comics.

24

Today when I’m creating a new work I try to feel boundless as I once was. Nothing is better then the ingenuity and the freedom of a child. Do you come from a creative family? Are they supportive of your work? Today my family supports me totally, but was not always so. Maybe that’s why I graduated in advertising an not fine arts. The strong support always came from my mothers who is an architecture. If you could describe your work in 3 (or 5) words, what would they be? Expression of emotion with colors. Maybe that a good description. When did do realize that you have a distinct style? My style its full of my professional and life experiences. Maybe that the best way to achieve something really distinct. Tell us a little bit about your first project and how you feel about it now? I think my first project was a comic stories of a crazy mutant alligator, a really funny piece of work for school. I was 8 years old and I remember that I really felt happy for that creation.

Tell us your philosophy on creativity. Wow, that a difficult one. I believe that creativity is something that everybody has and like. It’s only a matHow creative were you ter as a child? of how do For me, the childhood you want is the most creative to use it on stage of life. you admire and why? I have many favorite artists. From Brazil I’m really inspired by Aldemir Martins, Tarsila do Amaral and Portinari. From around the world I love the classic Spanish painters like Picasso and Dali, and the modern art of Tim Burton. I think they all are amazing artists that created something new and unique.

*fea-tur-ing [fee-cher-ing]: a) giving special attention to; b) including as a prominent part.

What has been your greatest achievement so far? Becoming a freelance illustrator. That’s for me the greatest achievement. Specially in Brazil, where it’s really difficult to work only with illustration and design. What are the top three websites you like? I have many favorite websites. But I like the Behance community a lot, the FWA and of course Youtube. What is your favourite CD? The second CD from Battles, Mirrored it’s my favorite one for drawing. What are your plans for the future? Well, now I’m planning my trip to LA to present my work on the Roadshow of the ICON6 conference. I’m very excited about it. What is your advice for aspiring creatives? To do what you love to do, and never give up on your dreams. Personal motto? To always visualize your goal and to work for it.

Celebrating 100 With A Small Giveaway COMPETITION

Because we are still small, and because we know the worth of small but valuable things, we decided to celebrate the fact that our Facebook Group reached the 100 member mark (a couple of months back) by giving away a little present! That’s right – everyone had the chance to receive our little present just because we had 100 members. So here’s how it worked.... Because we are so wholly dedicated to providing you with the latest and greatest bits and pieces of inspiration, we decided to run a tiny competition to celebrate all of our 100 members (and all those that have joined since). All people had to do was produce a piece of creative work (anything at all – drawing, poem, photograph, design....) that contains either the number 100, or the words “one hundred” in it. Once this was done, the work had to be sent to us at b_creative_2010@hotmail.com before the 15/05/2010 (with the subject line: “100”). Once all the entries were received, we got our small panel of judges to pick out the best 20 pieces of work. When the 20 finalists were chosen, the works were displayed in an album called “Celebrating 100 With A Small Give Away” via our Bcreative Here Facebook profile (if you’re not friends with us yet, make sure you send us a request). We also promised to feature the works in the May issue of b* creative and you can see them all here! Ah, how excitement :) Because we believe in fairness, now that the album with the work of our 20 finalists has been created, all of our friends will have the ability to vote for their favourite pieces of work via the “like” function on Facebook. The ten pieces of work that have the most “likes” by the beginning of July (01/07/2010 – yes we have extended the voting date) will receive one of our b* creative badges (we’ll be shipping them out no matter where you are on this beautiful planet). Now, we know that it doesn’t sound like the prize of a lifetime, but like we said – we’re small, we appreciate small, and we wanted to do something small and exciting for our members and then reward them with a small gift :) Going by the awesome entries we’ve received, we’d have to say that so many of you share our “like of the small but significant”.

She’s a ball of creative energy and at 23, this young lady is taking the Serbian design industry by storm. If you haven’t had a chance to come into contact with her work, we can comfortably say that you don’t know what you’ve been missing. Working under the alias of Egotreep Design, this creative vixen has developed a rather exceptional style that any designer would be proud of. We contacted Tereza to find out how someone of her artistic calibre goes about everyday life and their work.

design grew into me. How creative were you as a child? I was a very artistic child with the tons of sketchbooks filled with drawings of everything that surrounded me, my daydreams and fantasies. All the grownups were always telling me that when I grow up I will be an artist, but having visual arts as a profession was something that became obvious to me many years later. Do you come from a creative family? Are they supportive of your work? No, no creatives in my family, just me. But something that I am very thankful for is the fact that even though they don’t quite understand what is it that I do, they are always willing to try. If you could describe your work in 3 (or 5) words, what would they be? 4C - Creative, communicative, clean, casual

What sort of education have you had? As I mentioned before, I was a student at the High school of Arts, which was followed by Faculty of Arts at the Applied arts department for Graphic design, that I am currently attending (on my fourth of five years study). Formal education was something that gave What sparked me a bases, knowledge and routine, but self your passion engagment, working days, sleepless nights, for graphic experiments, mistakes, exploring, creative design? crisis, following trends in design, publishing Graphic your work, entering competitons, designing design is for clients, designing for myself, designing something in team, designing by myself, designing for that came money, designing without money, interacspontanetion with other designers and non-designers, ously to me. taking critiques, both good and bad, takI was always ing acknowledgments and dealing with so interested in many things is something that I find far more visual arts, so signifant than any school. My first project I did for a client was a visual identity for a certain organization and the magazine they were about to publish. The work was quite challenging and lasted for weeks, because I lacked the experience and was still learning the programs I was designing in. That didn’t stop me from making the best of it. In the end, the project was finalized, but was never published due to many financial and communication problems. When I turn back at it I can say that it was a very valuable experience, that made me build up in many ways to how I am as a designer today. It made me realize that design is more than just “designing”. That it includes more people skills, than anyone has told me before. That you must be patient and reliable, persistent and hard working, know how to sell your idea, know when to make a compromise, know when to have a break, deal with different opinions and boundaries, but still be creative. Don’t get me wrong, I didn’t learn all that right from the start, but it sure was a pretty good slap of reality. Tell us your philosophy on creativity. When I think about it, creativity is something that is a part of you, the way you solve problems and the way you perceive everything that surrounds you. It would be if someone would have asked what is your philosophy on having brown eyes.

creativity, ability to go beyond their limitations and be as best as they can be. Don’t want to pick out anyone in particular. They are all just wonderful. What has been your greatest achievement so far? To be in the place where I am right now. What are the top three websites you like? Currently those are Twitter, Behance.net and Adsoftheworld.com What is your favourite CD? If I must name just one, for the past couple of years it would be the “Funeral” by Arcade fire from 2004, even though I discovered it several years later. I just keep getting back to it and can’t seem to explain why. What are your plans for the future? To fulfill my top secret mission. What is your advice for aspiring creatives? Define your goals and build up to them. Grip tight and don’t let go.

Whose work do you admire and why? Lately I am admiring local Serbian creatives. Personal motto? Work hard. Watch Dexter. Young and old. Famous and anonymous. Online and offline. Fascinated by their drive,

Dream Ball Project At The Dieline The Dream Ball Project by Unplug Design is an amazing demonstration of how packaging can impact mankind in a positive way- increasing quality of life, ensuring a second life to a box, and forming a bond between two people. The problem: To the children in The Third World; Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, Somalia, Congo and etc, who can’t enjoy football freely because of poverty, war and natural disaster, having a football means a lot and can be a dream and hope to escape from their poor life. However, the children are so poor that they can not buy a football. So, they play football with the ball made of plastic bag or a coconut palm leaves Therefore, giving them their own footballs which can give them hope, is our aim of this project. The Solution: We suggest this Dream Ball made of relife boxes deliverd to those poor children by recycling. A. Create patterns that can help making a ball on the surface of an aid box. B. Activities of giving aid boxes to children in The Third World. C. The used aid boxes will be recycled as a football by children with the patterns on boxes. D. By making Dream Ball with the children together, the aid organizations will get the chance to be friendly with them. The football: In the aspect of material, we considered children playing football with bare foot. So, we use paper that can be recycled and its thickness changes the intensity and elasticity of the Dream Ball. - Megan Cummins

Featuring: Benedicte Imbert

She’s vigorous, successful and loud, with an eye for the finest of details. When Benedicte picks up her camera you can be certain that a work of art is sure to be made. Spending the last few years travelling and working around England and Australia, Benedicte always ensures that she has her camera ready to capture those priceless moments in time. We asked her about the way she approaches the subjects in her photos and what inspires her. Here’s what she had to say....

Name, surname and place of residence. Benedicte Imbert, the world What sparked your passion for photography / writing / art? Live Music: the colours, sound and motion… it’s just magical How creative were you as a child? Very Do you come from a creative family? Are they supportive of your work? No. My family didn’t really believe photography was a real subject to study at university. If you could describe your work in 3 (or 5) words, what would they be? Narrative, colourful, musical What sort of education have you had? A pretty good one I think. Tell us a little bit about your first project and how you feel about it now? I remember one of the first, not THE first. We had to produce a documentary kind of work. I spent a month hanging around the skatepark in Camden town. To present it, I built a skate ramp with the pictures and a skateboard with the contact sheets. It was fun, but the overall quality was pretty poor.

42

Tell us your philosophy on creativity. Creativity for me has the same rules as physics. Like Lavoisier said, nothing disappears everything transforms into something else. If you can transform what you see or feel into art then this be-

comes your creation. Whose work do you admire and why? David Bailey’s portraits, Marc Caro’s film sets, Cindy Sherman’s Untitled stills.

What has been your greatest achievement so far? We achieve things everyday, whether it’s great or not there’s no way to measure it What are the top three websites you like? I go on the net to check my mails or to check out stuff when I need to so no ranking here. What is your favourite CD? Do you mean album? There would be quite a few on the list. To name a couple I’d say; ‘Washing machine’ by Sonic Youth, ‘Love symbol’ by Prince, or Madona’s ‘Like a Virgin’ What are your plans for the future? See the world and a koala What is your advice for aspiring creatives? Keep your eyes open at all times unless you’re having a nap (it’s quite important to rest) Personal motto? What goes around comes around

Theurel & Thomas At The Dieline Anagrama branding and packaging project for a pâtisserie in Monterrey, México. “Theurel & Thomas is the first pâtisserie in Mexico specialized in French macarons, the most popular dessert of the French pastries. For this project it was very important to create an imposing brand that would emphasize the unique value, elegance and detail of this delicate dessert. White was our primary tool for design. As a result of this the attention was fully oriented to the colorful macarons. We placed two lines in our design in cyan and magenta, as a relation with a modern French flag to inject a vanguard vision to the identity. We selected Didot (created by Firmin and Pierre Didot), a French typography that would present the brand with sophistication.”

The Dieline’s Student Spotlight:

Pure Bake Shop New work from Michael Gump Jr. a soon to be graduate from Bowling Green State University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Graphic Design. “Pure Bake Shop is a Toledo based bakery that specializes in gluten free products. The bakery uses all natural ingredients including organic beans, soy, and nut flours for their baked goods. I wanted to accentuate the ‘purity’ of the bakeshop. The mixture of large, but thin typography, and dot patterns along with the soft vellum packaging create a mood that encompasses the pure aspect on which the bakeshop takes pride.”
