Minor Matters See that tramp sleeping in the corner over there? He has a story to tell. “Once upon a time there lived a farmer. He ploughed his land and tended his cattle. He kept the farm ever so tidy. Life was just about perfect, but something was missing. One evening he went to town and met the love of his life. They got married and soon started a family. Everything seemed perfect…but not quite perfect enough…” Baboró Notes This simple story is beautifully told by the wonderful Peter Rinderknecht (Portofino Ballade, Baboró 2003). He brings fantasy and reality so close together that one can hardly tell one from the other.

A uniquely memorable blend of comedy, puppetry and inspiring storytelling, The Man Who Planted Trees, an adaptation of Jean Giono’s wonderful environmental tale, bowled over children and adults alike in the 2006 Edinburgh Fringe. An Chéad Chéim Is scéal é seo faoi bheirt bhuachaill, Myles agus Dano. Tá duine acu nua sa bhaile agus maireann sé ina shamhlaíocht agus trína chuid pictiúir agus scéalta. Baineann an leaid eile leas níos mó as a dhoirn ná a intinn. Nuair a chasann an bheirt ar a chéile, osclaítear fuinneog na samhlaíochta mar mhodh marthanais. Beirt bhuachaill an–eagsúil... nó an bhfuil siad? Baboró Notes Branar presents this lively production with an innovative blend of physical theatre, humour, original music and object puppetry. Even very limited Irish speakers will be able to follow this clearly presented performance.

Lock Up Those Auld Comedians

Clap your hands and stamp your feet! Join in the fun as musicians Diarmaid Moynihan and Brian Finnegan, in partnership with the Linenhall Arts Centre, present a lively and informative traditional music session.

Blue Teapot presents a play devised by the actors with director Miquel Barcelo. The play opens in Ireland in the early 1900s with a troupe of comedians being put on trial before judge and jury for being different and disrupting the peace with the nature of their work. In order to prove their innocence and the right to be different the comedians ask if they can put on one last performance...

Baboró Notes A wealth of musical knowledge and instrumental skill is presented in such a way as to keep any class intrigued and inspired.

Baboró Notes Blue Teapot actors pull out all the stops in this crazy action-packed comedy.

Beowulf Irish Premiere Imagine; it’s the 7th century. You are the King of Denmark. You have gold, glory and a big reputation. Your only problem is that an ugly, fetid, 500-pound troll named Grendel is killing your men at random. A dreadful nightmare but a magnificent opening for a story. Baboró Notes With the audience sitting face to face around the Viking ship, the distance between them and the action is minimal. You feel like you are taking part in this thrilling tale, and who knows, maybe suddenly you are…

Shopping for Shoes A Play by Tim Crouch about passion and fashion, hearts and soles. Siobhan McClusky is 13 and passionately politically aware. Shaun Holmes is also 13 and passionate about only one thing – shoes. A small part of Siobhan’s heart belongs to Shaun but he hardly knows she exists. Undeterred, and with a little bit of planning and nifty footwork, she soon helps him to discover that a pair of shoes can do more than just help a person to express themselves. Baboró Notes One of Scotland’s leading companies presents this hilarious and clever production. It is utterly charming.

In early 2007 a class from Scoil Sheamais Naofa visited the touring IMMA exhibition Radharc at the Galway Arts Centre. This marked the beginning of the 2007 Baboró Outreach Project with teaching artist Sharon Lynch, classroom teacher Joan Burke and students. Together they developed their response to one of the pieces, Waves by Marie-Jo Lafontaine, and now the students’ work will be exhibited alongside the original inspiration. Full Circle contains four pieces in two different venues. Three of the pieces are from the permanent collection of the Irish Museum of Modern Art.

Adult Events Spotlight On…. Denmark Baboró continues to look at other countries for inspiration in the development of quality programming for children. This year we are pleased to feature Denmark in a day that includes performances, a presentation, discussions and a breakout session. Although Denmark is a fairly small country, it is home to more than 120 children’s theatre companies. The history of modern theatre for children in Denmark is the story of a movement, a story of solidarity and of shared victories and defeats. One of the shared goals of the companies is working together to achieve a high level of quality. Baboró: The Future Are We There Yet? In 2008 Baboró will host an International Conference as part of its International Festival. Bringing together artists and creative thinkers from all over the world, Baboró aims to inspire practitioners to explore new ways to create innovative and exciting work for children. Through dialogue, workshops and a stunning showcase of the very best in international work, delegates will be given an opportunity to interrogate the creative elements required to nurture excellence in artistic work for children.
