And then... they fall!

Ahhhh!!

Think about things that fall down - like fruit from trees, or rain, snow, leaves and feathers from the sky. People and animals fall down sometimes. What about things that are thrown and then fall - like stones? What about stars? Simple words accompany the actors’ actions, creating a wonderful unity of images made with movement, light and sound.

Baboró Notes: This is one surprise after another. Parents are surprised by their own children’s engagement and children are surprised by the magic. It is also a lovely gentle show for special needs children to enjoy.

Irish Premiere

Enter Jay’s world, where bubbles, a pet pig, mysterious plants, and more play a part in creating moments of ahhhh…. magic and delight…. as he settles into his new home. Combining music, illusion and physical theatre, Ahhhh!! is the latest production from PigNut, created with loving care for very young children.

Children and the young-at-heart will love the funny and charming Jamie Adkins in his newest show. Jamie's incredible juggling, slackwire feats, and acrobatics are interwoven with a touching story about a natural clown who has something to say, but just can't quite get it out. An expert at comedy born of desperation, Jamie's performance is humble and unguarded. Adkins deftly escorts the audience along his poetic journey with sidesplitting wit. “Though Mr Adkins’ best routines draw oohs and ahs, he is just as successful at drawing laughs” New York Times

Goodbye Mr Muffin

From the hidden corners of a quiet workshop, a quirky collection of puppets comes magically to life when Clare, the lovely storyteller, comes to visit. Begging her for new stories, the puppets and the audience are given a rich banquet of stories and tales.

Once upon a time Mr Muffin was young, strong and proud. He could carry a whole cucumber on his back! Now he is old, tired and grey. He sits alone in his house remembering... In an atmosphere of warmth, humour and respect, Goodbye Mr. Muffin tells the heart-rending story of the last days in the life of a beloved guinea pig and the feelings and emotions experienced during the passing of a much-loved pet.

Baboró Notes: It is a joy to watch the chemistry between storyteller Clare Murphy and puppeteer Tommy Baker not to mention the puppets.

The Musician is a spellbinding new opera for young people. The story of a child destined to become the best known flautist of them all….the Pied Piper. Rejected by his own townsfolk, the young boy meets a travelling musician who teaches him how to play the flute. The boy plays beautifully but then discovers that the music has an extraordinary effect on the town’s rats; a dangerous hypnotic power. With magic, dance and its very own orchestra, The Musician is a dark, original and truly thrilling piece of musical theatre. Written and composed by Conor Mitchell (recent collaborator with Pet Shop Boys and the Peter Hall Company). “The Musician becomes a chilling horror-opera... which challenges the imagination of its young audience.” The Irish Times Baboró Notes: It was an amazing experience to sit with a school audience and see them totally enraptured by an opera. Janusz Korczak

Champion of the Child Featuring drawings by Itzhak Belfer, an Israeli artist of international renown and one of the children saved by Korczak. Champion of the Child tells the moving and inspiring story of Janusz Korczak (1879-1942). A pioneer of children’s rights and a key influence on the 1979 UN Convention on the Rights of a Child, Korczak devoted his life to the rights and wellbeing of children, regardless of nationality or religion. The exhibition shows how his teachings on the treatment of children continue to resonate around the world today. It charts his efforts to protect children from the horrors of the Warsaw ghetto before his death in Treblinka concentration camp. Conference Crêche Teachers, Researchers, Parents, Artists, Creators

Natural Born Artists Arts for Early Years

“…arts education is essential for building innovative thinkers who will be our nation’s leaders of tomorrow” Michelle Obama

Baboró will host an international conference exploring the world of the Arts for Early Years (0 to 6 years) as part of the festival in October. Funded by the Arts Council, NUI Galway and the European Commission’s Culture 2007 – 2013 Programme, as part of the Small Size – Big Citizens Project, this conference aims to bring artists, researchers, crêche teachers, parents and practitioners together to examine cultural politics with a small “p”

Key Speakers include: David Coleman A graduate of University College Dublin, clinical psychologist, broadcaster and author David Coleman has been working with children and families for over ten years. He has become well known in Ireland as the presenter of two RTÉ television series Families in Trouble and Teens in the Wild. He is also the presenter of 21st Century Child – a landmark venture for RTÉ following 12 families in Ireland over a period of 6 years, from the births of their babies onwards. David is the author of Parenting is Child’s Play, a guide to raising children.

Asking the questions, Where are we now?, Where do we want to be in 5 years’ time?, and How do we get there?, the conference will address the critical contribution that the arts make to children and to society as a whole.

Martin Drury Currently an Arts Director with the Arts Council, Martin Drury’s work, both in and outside of the Arts Council, has been central to many developments in arts education and provision for young people. He began working in the arts in 1979, the year the groundbreaking report The Place of the Arts in Irish Education was published. Reflecting on this report, his contribution to the Baboró conference will review 30 years of arts policy and provision for young people in Ireland, and will offer views on what needs to be attended to in the coming decade.

There will be a series of presentations and discussions from the perspective of child psychology, cultural policy, artistic development, children’s engagement and the roles of adults (teachers and parents) in engaging with children and the arts. Delegates will also attend performances aimed at the very young, programmed specifically for children in the Early Years spectrum.
