Illumination noun (ih-loo-muh-ney-shuh’n). light, clarification, elucidation, explanation What better way to turn on the light in a child’s mind than by giving them a rich cultural experience? Illumination is our theme for this year, and our programme is bursting with brilliant, dazzling dance, theatre, puppetry, film, storytelling, music, literature events, visual arts and craft exhibitions, workshops and discussions. Our artists have woven light and shadow into their work, and we know that they will indeed dazzle you. So come celebrate Baboró’s 15th birthday in Galway, where we know how to celebrate the arts.

Thank You Baboró would like to thank The Arts Council, funding bodies, sponsors, partner and friends for their vital support. We also thank you – parents, teachers and children – for coming back to the festival year after year.

Das Papiertheater from Germany will create an art installation in Galway City centre that will animate the street in a unique and interactive way. It will allow families and individuals to express themselves in a fun and creative way. This will form the centrepiece of our Opening Party – a celebration of our 15th birthday, with Mr Whippy Soundsystem, Street Games and a brilliant Baboró festival atmosphere.

We welcome our returning visitors and say a big Hi! to all our new visitors to Galway in 2011.

Sotto un’altra Luce Under a Different Light

The Little Elephant

IRISH PREMIERE

Bubu is given the job of doing the family washing. It is a tedious job and, while washing, Bubu tells a story. Clever and imaginative Bubu transforms ordinary socks and stockings into animals of the jungle. This is the story of how the little elephant, with a small nose and an insatiable curiosity, was the first of all of the elephants to have a trunk. Inspired by the Just So story The Elephant’s Child by Rudyard Kipling.

The night turns the stars on and opens the door of dreams… the darkest night is never black… there is always a small light. A dancer and an actortechnician bring the audience into an enchanting world of games and poetry through the magic and diversity of light.

This stunningly beautiful show, a co-production with Sadler’s Wells, sees six dancers create a world of moving objects and dream-like imagery utilising the theme of Clouds in the most magical way. This performance is not only wildly imaginative but packed full of energy. Inspired by the work of the surrealist artist Magritte, Aracaladanza combine their trademark playfulness with mesmerising visuals to bring to life ordinary objects: a flipper dance which is laugh out loud funny and a ladder dance which will take your breath away.

One dark night, far far away, Thomas Snout was born. Ever since then he has collected nights, capturing them with his bare hands, which is not an easy task as obscurity is black and dirty and leaves traces. It is also dangerous, as fears live in the night as fish live in the sea. Over the years Thomas Snout has collected 3845 nights, big and little, with or without moonlight, starlit or starless; nights of his own, nights of others, as well as a few that have been lent to him… OCTOBER MO TU WE TH FR SA SU 21 22 23 Duration 60 min Venue Black Box Theatre Times Fr 10am & 12pm Sa 1.30pm & 3pm Su 11am & 2pm

Where do things go when you forget them?

Losha likes to collect things that have been forgotten, insignificant things, and things that are important. She shares the memories of half remembered stories and defines the contours of unexpected worlds where only secret dreams can take you.

A delicate world of objects and poetic dance. A sensitive tale made of light and shadows. Losha has been developed as part of The Arts Council’s Theatre Maker In Residence Scheme with Roscommon Arts Office and Roscommon Arts Centre, under the mentorship of Charlot Lemoine from Vélo Théâtre, France.

What happens when you elevate the child? What happens when their ideas are encouraged? What happens when those ideas are realised? What happens when those ideas are given a forum? What happens when thousands of other children interact with those ideas? WHAT HAPPENS…? Sadie Cramer, from Teignmouth in Devon, studied Fine Art Sculpture at The University of Ulster at Belfast. Always seeking to draw out the creative spirit in every child, much of her work involves coordinating art projects in schools.
