Relaxed Programme
All Children are citizens here and now, and have the cultural right to access the arts. We are pleased to announce the new Relaxed Programme that features performances specifically for parents or teachers who may have concerns about bringing their child/children to a public event. Our aim is to provide a comfortable and relaxed space for children to enjoy the show, and in turn provide a stress-free environment for parents. This year there will be four performances that will be marked with this symbol What is a Relaxed Performance? These performances are presented in a supportive atmosphere and reduce any discomfort or anxiety children or parents may have surrounding the theatre experience. Children, parents, teachers and carers can enjoy the experience knowing that: • The performances selected have visual delights or music and usually include humour. • If children are uncomfortable and need a break they can go out and return when they are ready. • If children require snacks to be available to eat they will be allowed to do so. We do ask that the snacks are not wrapped in noisy paper. • It is not essential that the children are absolutely silent throughout the performance. • These performances are open to everyone. ONLINE RESOURCE We have created a resource with photographs and a synopsis of the show, which can be downloaded from our website www.baboro.ie/relaxed to assist and prepare your child for their visit to Baboró. NEW FOR SCHOOL GROUPS In addition to the Relaxed Programme we also have recommended performances for designated special needs schools or groups, to assist with making their selection for their visit to Baboró. These are marked with this symbol

Above & Beyond Award 2013 The Above & Beyond Award was created to recognise inspiring individuals, organisations or communities that create opportunities for children to access the arts. This year’s Award will be presented to the creator of and the participants in Foxes and Donkeys, a documentary film inspired by the 1937 National School Collection. This story-gathering project, involving adults from St Brendan’s Nursing Home and children from St Brendan’s Boys’ School and St Ita’s Girls’ School in Loughrea, was developed and led by writer, director and actress Eileen Gibbons. The participants gathered at St Brendan’s Nursing Home to listen to and to tell stories. The film is a poetic bow to the power of sharing stories. Foxes and Donkeys will be screened during the festival at selected venues. More details on www.baboro.ie or follow us on www.facebook/baborogalway Pg 1

But if our pockets are empty, anything can sneak in and cause a ruckus – even a white rabbit! Louise, living an ordinary life, finds her world suddenly become magical and very strange because of what she discovers in her pocket. Collapsing Horse Theatre Company | Theatre | Ireland
Schools 3rd to 6th Class
Human Child Come away, O human child! To the waters and the wild. With a faery, hand in hand. For the world's more full of weeping than you can understand. The Stolen Child, W.B. Yeats
Inspired by W.B. Yeats’s ‘The Stolen Child’, Human Child borrows from Irish changeling mythology. It is the familiar story of a girl who struggles to be true to herself while being pulled to be someone else. Fortunately she discovers a world where she is celebrated for just being herself. Collapsing Horse uses live music, puppetry, and a magnificent set to present a beautiful and enchanting production that scoffs at becoming ‘more grown up’.
...there’s no shortage of emotion, intricacy or craft in this beautifully-told story. Welcome to Irish Times where the wild things are. BABORÓ NOTES: This is our surprise for this year. A wildly inventive and hysterical production created and performed by a new and exciting young Irish company. And best of all, it is not just for children, but for anyone who has been a child. Me, Mollser
Me, Mollser is the story of a strong-willed, passionate young Dubliner coping with consumption during the 1913 Lockout and Easter Rising of 1916. You may recognise her from Sean O’Casey’s famous Irish play “The Plough and the Stars”, which was first performed at the Abbey Theatre in 1926. Curious and enthusiastic, Mollser guides you through the overcrowded tenement where she lives. Her keen eye offers a view of daily life in turn of the century Dublin. But today is not a normal day. She must discover how she got transported to this strange hall…will you help her learn how she got there? BABORÓ NOTES: A gripping story with superb acting by Mary-Louise McCarthy. Lifeboat Written by Nicola McCartney
Lifeboat is the extraordinary true story of Bess Walker and Beth Cummings. It is a story of courage, a story of survival, a story of enduring friendship. On September 13, 1940, a ship - The City of Benares - set sail from Liverpool for Canada. On board were 90 evacuees escaping the relentless bombing and dangers of war-torn Britain. Four days into the crossing, the ship was torpedoed and sank. Only eleven of the evacuees survived. Two fifteen year old girls, Bess Walder and Beth Cumming, spent 19 terrifying hours in the water on an upturned lifeboat. They willed each other to survive. Now, over sixty years later, they remain firm friends. Directed by Gill Robertson. …heart rending and evocative… an impeccable production The Herald OCTOBER Mo Tu 14 15 11am

Tromluí Phinocchio PINOCCHIO - A NIGHTMARE
… a great introduction to how vast worlds can be created… out of very little at all.
Pinocchio has an urge to rebel, to run away, to be impetuous, to break with convention, to do 'whatever I want whenever I want'. The result is a rollercoaster ride through a magical and often sinister world. With live puppets, talking animals, and ghosts, this version of the classic Italian tale is a production rich with imagery and imagination. Tá fonn ar Phinocchio éirí amach i gcoinne an údaráis, saoirse a aimsiú óna athair Gepetto agus a rogha rud a dhéanamh. Ach, tá aistear fada, tríd an domhain contúirteach, draíochtúil, os comhair an phuipéid adhmaid sula bhfásann sé aníos ina fhíor-bhuachaill Bígí réidh chun bualadh le puipéid beo, le taibhsí, agus le hainmhithe go bhfuil bua na cainte acu.
Irish Theatre Magazine
A bi-lingual production in Irish and English, this show is accessible to those with little Irish or no Irish at all. BABORÓ NOTES: There was a great buzz about this production in last year’s Dublin Fringe. For the last 2 years, Baboró has worked with a number of primary schools in Galway, exploring environmental issues with scientists from NUI Galway, and a number of local and national artists. The students, scientists, artists and teachers have explored Energy Harvesting, Future Internet Technology, Bio-Fuels and other alternative energies and environmental challenges through a series of field trips, workshops and experiments. They’ve worked with artists to translate their findings in a creative way, and they’ve come up with some fantastic scenarios about our future world. Most recently they worked with writer and illustrator Oisín McGann (see pg 19) to learn about character development, storyboards and narrative. Brendan Smith of DERI has taught them Scratch Programming to bring their stories to life as Digital Stories. Become a Friend
We all love our friends and we would be lost without them. Baboró’s Friends are an eclectic club of generous individuals and companies that help make our spectacular festival possible. Our Friends help to fund our Schools Programme, they enable us to bring companies to Galway from across the world and they fund the development of new work by Irish artists and performers. We couldn’t do all this without them! Becoming a Friend of Baboró International Arts Festival for Children is simple and, because we love our Friends, we reward them generously for their kindness. If you’re already a Friend, thank you!
