The Way Back Home

Based on the book The Way Back Home by Oliver Jeffers. When a boy discovers a single-propeller airplane in his closet, he does what any young adventurer would do: he flies into outer space! Feet and hands are a constant source of wonder to the very young. With this in mind, these charming performers create a joyful world of puppets, percussion and song to tell three delightful little stories from the Caribbean Islands.

Ages 4 to 6

Millions of miles from earth, the plane begins to splutter and quake, so the boy must make a daring landing on the moon. But as it turns out, he is not alone up there... BABORÓ NOTES: This well loved picture book is beautifully recreated and presented with quality craftsmanship and style. Book early.

Flying Cow

Playtime is fun yet serious at the same time. Once you’re totally immersed, anything can happen. Flying on the wings of their imagination, two girls and a boy embark on a standoff: because when there are three of you, who plays with whom? From playful banter to flying cows and rolling eggs, emerges a friendship for all. “A brilliant show for young and old […] During the show, there was always something new to discover’” Matt Herijgers (12), cultuurbarbaartjes.nl

BABORÓ NOTES: Flying Cow is a fun and imaginative dance experience, especially made for young audiences. A treat!

Written by Frances Kay in collaboration with Theatre Lovett Directed by Muireann Ahern Lovett

Old Jack Foley forgets to remember and remembers to forget. Once when he was young and strong he dreamed of joining the circus. Now he has a sore toe and it’s not getting better as he sits by his radio tuning the dials on his memories. Theatre Lovett invite you into their world of radio waves and sorrowful partings in Mr. Foley, The Radio Operator. Join Louis Lovett as he conjures characters and chapters full of charm from Mr. Foley’s colourful past. There will be a Q&A after each performance. “With true comic spirit, Theatre Lovett defies all age groupings to appeal to everybody.” Irish Independent BABORÓ NOTES: Louis Lovett works his magic once again. No wonder Galway audiences, young and old, love him. Pg 8

The clues are in its pages… Everything is flat, pressed, and squished. Slowly, page-by-page, the scrapbook becomes the window into a secret world. A curious life unfolds before us – but who is Josephine Bean? Shona Reppe presents a brand new show, leading the audience into a hidden world of wonders.

Adapted from Homer’s The Odyssey (considered the greatest epic of Western literature), Odysseus’ voyage is the subject of an innovative and participatory style of theatrical storytelling. The performance is fuelled by the imagination of the audience as they, together with an ensemble of professional actors, create every facet of the production experience. Students and family audiences not only interact with characters in this tale from ancient Greece, but they also portray many of those characters themselves—Penelope, Hermes, Poseidon, members of Odysseus’ crew—as they are transported on a journey unlike any they have ever experienced before. "If you're in the room, you're in the show!" BABORÓ NOTES: Now for something totally different! Come along and see how these dynamic actors manage to pull everyone into the story. Great fun!! Pg 10

Stories of a Yellow Town Stories of a Yellow Town is an intertwining of true personal stories told in the words of the Brazilian and Irish people living in Gort, Co. Galway. Collected through interviews in homes, street corners, local shops and hairdressers, these stories give a remarkable insight into the struggles, misunderstandings and humorous incidents that occur when two communities, side by side, are left to get on with life. BABORÓ NOTES: There is something about the wonder of theatre that can take two men on stage and make you believe that you have just seen a show with at least six different actors. Fantastic. Pg 12

Architects of Air | Inflatable Art | England

A luminarium is a sculpture that people enter to be moved to a sense of wonder at the beauty of light and colour. Enter and be amazed….

“Suddenly the world outside seemed to be forgotten, we had all been transported into a whole other world of light.”

Anyone who experienced Galway Arts Festival in 1995 will surely remember Eggopolis, the spectacular inflatable structure in Father Burke Park – it created quite a stir.

Photographer: John Owens

Amococo Luminarium

For our 18th birthday, we decided to bring it back or at least its larger cousin Amococo. For nine days we will have a host of activity around the Spanish Arch, as visitors are entranced by the beauty of this amazing structure. The Experience Visitors remove their shoes before entering an airlock. The first reaction is often one of delight and awe at the unexpected beauty of the light. A natural reaction is to want to just sit and take in the experience. This is an experience for all ages and the structure is wheelchair accessible. The radiance of the daylight transmitted by the coloured pvc of the luminarium is surprising in its luminosity and makes a direct impact on the senses. BABORÓ NOTES: Follow us on Twitter and Facebook – we’ll have some surprises in the space but you won’t know if you don’t follow! In partnership with Galway City Council
