We’ve all heard the horror stories about moms (and dads) traveling with breast milk and the TSA agents who make them prove their breast milk is actually breast milk and then contaminate it. Or just as bad, dump it out. Nothing makes us more mad than wasted breast milk because we know that pumping takes precious time, energy, and logistical planning. But a lot of moms don’t know their rights because, let’s face it, the TSA guidelines are vague and confusing. So before you book your next flight, here’s what you need to know, according to Mamava.

Breast milk, formula, and juice are all allowed through security in your carry-on bag. Unlike shampoo or other liquids, breast milk is exempt from the “limited quantity rule” of 3.4 ounces. Let the TSA agents know you’re traveling with breast milk and put your pump and bottles (empty or full) on the conveyor belt for screening separate from your other liquids.

YOU CAN DECLINE HAVING YOUR MILK OPENED
If your breast milk is frozen, a visual inspection is usually fine. However, if it’s thawed, TSA agents may want to test it for explosives, but you have the right to say no. Screening procedures are inceasingly non-invasive but traveling mamas still recommend you ask the TSA agent to put on a fresh pair of gloves if they handle your bottles or bags of milk.
OR X-RAYED.
You’re allowed to carry freezer bags, ice packs, and frozen gel packs for your breast milk. But traveling mamas recommend using heavier duty ice packs because they last longer than the frozen gel packs.
FREEZER PACKS ARE FINE.
Pack your pump, breast milk, and freezer packs together in one bag. There’s a lot of misinformation out there about whether or not breast pumps are considered medical devices (and thus not counted as one of your carry-on bags). According to the FDA a breast pump is a medical device, but because airlines still vary on whether or not they’ll count your pump bag as a carry-on, it’s best to check with your specific airline. Hats off to United Airlinesfor specifically stating that moms are allowed PACK LIKE A PRO.
an extra carry-on bag for their breast pump! Traveling mamas recommend that you always bring extra batteries and a hand pump in your purse… just in case. If you travel a lot for work, you might consider investing in the TSA pre-check program to reduce the lines, the wait, and the hassles (the price is $85 or $100 for five years, at which point you’ll be done breastfeeding and on to other challenges like kindergarten!) And if you’d rather not travel at all with your liquid gold companies like Milk Expressed or Milk Stork will ship it home for you.
FREQUENT FLYER OPTIONS.
It’s not easy to find the rules and regs for crossing borders with breastmilk, and to make it even more complicated, the rules can vary according from country to country. However, within the European Union you can bring up to 2000 ml of breastmilk (which = 67 ounces) in your carry-on luggage, but only if it’s not frozen. Frozen breastmilk must be packed in your checked luggage, no exception. The good news is that pumped breast milk can last at room temperature for 6-8 hours in a cool environment. Canada is very clear that breastmilk (and a cooler pack) is fine and not held to the 100 ml liquid rule, so yet another reason to love them. When in doubt, traveling mamas recommend that you contact the American consulate in your destination country for the most up to date regulations.

As we all finalize our plans to head out for the holidays, you might be stressing about more than just what to wear to Christmas dinner. Many of the tinsel-trimmed holiday activities tend to take place during baby’s nap time and when you throw a wrench in your trusty schedule, everyone can begin to melt down. We went straight to the source and asked pediatrician and best-selling author Dr. Tanya Altmann for her expert tips on maintaining baby’s routine while traveling.

WRITE DOWN YOUR PACKING LIST.

While you
might be able to make do with re-wearing your favorite sweater and jeans, assume baby is going to need ample clothing to account for spills, accidents, and exploding diapers. Besides clothes, remember to think about diapers, wipes, bottles, pacifiers, blankets, snacks, toys, loveys, car seats— it’s a long list! Start as soon as possible, write items down and think about what you use each day, then you’ll ensure you have everything you need packed and ready to go. Keeping baby’s feeding routine as usual can be extra challenging when you’re traveling during the holidays and attending lots of parties and family gatherings. If you don’t have the option to bring food with you, make sure you stop at a grocery store upon arrival (or order groceries to be delivered) and stock up on all
SNACKS AND MEALS.
of baby’s important go-to foods and snacks. My foundation foods that can be mixed and matched at meals and snack times include: berries, eggs, prunes (important to keep everyone regular), yogurt, avocados (easy to order when out!), chicken, fish, beans, lentils, green vegetables and whole grains (even dry whole grain, high fiber cereal works as a snack on the go!). If your baby is just starting solids, mash up any of these solid foods with a little bit of water until they get comfortable chewing. If you’re staying with a relative or friend, let them know ahead of time you’ll be bringing food for your baby and ask if they have a blender or anything else you might need. Proper nutrition is so important for a baby’s growth and development and you want to maintain it even when traveling. Stick to your baby’s bedtime routine! Like nutrition, sleep is essential to keep their little bodies strong and healthy, especially this time of year when you’re worried about illness. Go through your nighttime routine as though you were home. If this includes a favorite book, blanket, white noise machine or sleep sack, make sure you pack those, and keep bedtime as similar to home as possible. Even if baby seems energized by little cousins at a family party, deviating too much off schedule, may make for not such a fun next day if your little one (and you) don’t get enough sleep. And if you’re planning to be in a car during bedtime, go through the ritual of changing into pajamas and soothing baby into sleep before leaving.
SLEEP, SLEEP, SLEEP.
Many parents have these on standby in their car, but make sure you throw them in your bag or carry-on. Your baby is going to be exposed to a lot of new places (and germs!) when traveling and you want to get rid of as many of those germs as possible. Wipe down surfaces your baby is playing on or eating off of. Also, frequently wipe down baby’s hands and your hands (make sure wipes are safe for skin). You don’t realize the amount of things you come into contact with and using a wipe is a good habit to get into. Birdie wakes up anywhere from 6 to 7 AM. We have a nice breastfeeding session then I change her into some fresh clothes. I make myself a cup of coffee and then take Birdie on a walk. After our walk, I catch up on emails while I watch Bird play in her play center then down for her first nap at 8 AM I love our mornings together! They are so peaceful and nice.

The greatest challenge for me is functioning with no sleep. Jumping back into my career is what I wanted but I also want to be a hands-on mom. I didn’t realize that coming with that was no sleep.

What were your first thoughts when you found out you were pregnant?

Finally! I was so thrilled and I took 20
tests just to make sure it was truly real. Tell us how you decided on your daughter’s name.

My husband’s only request was that we name all of our children with B names. His whole family are B’s and I’m a B, so he really wanted our kids to be B’s. From there, we wanted a nature-inspired name and that’s how we decided on Birdie. Her middle name is Joe after my grandfather who meant the world to me.

hours, I couldn’t handle the pain. I then received an epidural, took a two hour nap, and was back in labor. I pushed for three hours straight and couldn’t get Birdie out. After 21 hours of labor, it ended in an emergency C-section. Birdie had a 14 inch head! Even though it wasn’t the birth experience I had in mind, I’m so happy Birdie came into this world safely. Now that she’s here, what do you hope to instill into your daughter?

I really want to instill confidence and strength. I want her to always follow her heart and stand up for herself. I want her to be an inspiring and empowering woman.

How about your birth experience— Did Birdie’s birth unfold the way you thought it would?

It was the complete opposite of what I expected. I wanted a natural birth and thought because I’m an athlete that it would be a quick, easy labor. Boy, was I wrong! I was ten days late and had to be induced. I thought I could labor naturally, but after nine

A flowy bohemian dress or a cute sweat outfit. It’s all about comfort for me as I’m lugging Bird around all day.

It’s changed so much! I never had boobs before so I wore all these different types of hippie shirts. Now I’m a double D and those shirts make me look huge. I’ve really had to find a look that makes my body type look good and makes me feel that I’ve kept my personal style. I was never into showing cleavage, but I feel I need to show it to feel smaller [now]. I feel like I’m still searching for the perfect jean or the perfect top.

What is your wellness routine like right
Counting calories is huge for me. There are so many apps that can help you stay focused with your eating. I started to do my workouts at night. Literally when Birdie goes down for bed, I either hit the gym, spin class, or hot yoga. I realized that nighttime is

when I’m the weakest on snacking and indulging. I just want to plop on the couch to watch Netflix with snacks and wine. I figured if I traded that out for a workout then I’ll lose the weight quicker, which has proven to be true. Don’t get me wrong, I still allow for my Netflix nights once or twice a week. You’ve just started another venture— Birdiebee! Tell us about the idea to start the brand and what it’s all about.

My sister and I wanted to create a brand that walked the talk of women empowerment— a brand that globally could connect and inspire women. We wanted to create an undergarment line that makes you feel strong and confident. Fabrics were really important to me. I didn’t want a plain old shirt to have aspirational sayings, but a shirt with premium fabrics that felt like butter when you put it on. When we were thinking about names, we were sitting on the plane, talking about this brand for women and wanting to educate them on feminine health. My sister and I thought with undergarments and talking about our womanly bodies, why not call our brand Birdiebee? A cheeky nod to the birds and the bees. We have a huge plan for Birdiebee

ive husband. I honestly couldn’t do it without Bryan. Every week, we sit down and come up with a plan of how we can take care of Birdie and thrive in our careers. Teamwork is everything! How has your career shifted since having Birdie?

It’s shifted a lot— I had to hang up my boots in wrestling. It was really hard because my sister and I were at the forefront of the Women’s Revolution at WWE. It was difficult to take a back seat when they were finally giving the women what they wanted, but in saying that, it also opened up many doors. There’s a lot of value to being a mother. It allowed me to grow closer to my mom fans and let them join me on my journey to motherhood via Total Bellas. It helped me use a voice I didn’t realize I had. I felt like I finally had more time to push Birdiebee and our wine, Belle Radici, and give both of those brands the attention they needed. Most importantly, I now understand the meaning of “when one door closes, another one opens.”

always do it the weekend before Christmas and it all started when I was a little girl. My grandfather would take all of us grandchildren around his house, in line youngest to oldest, and we marched to the Drummer Boy music and point to every nativity set he had. He then would have the kids sit at what was considered the adult table and let us eat straight off of the china dishes. My grandmother would make homemade pasta and meatballs and all of the adults would sit at the kid tables. We still do this tradition. Now the great-grandchildren get in line and we still follow behind them. This year will be Birdie’s first Drummer Boy and I can’t wait! What’s on your holiday wish list this year?

Tell us about the inspiration behind your founding Peanut. How did it all begin?
MINI |
Peanut was born out of two main issues. The first was the emotional aspect of becoming a mother. Before Fin

arrived, I felt prepared. I had bought everything I needed, I’d read a few books. Turns out, the arrival of a baby isn’t just about planning. There are feelings and demands that you can’t plan for. My girlfriends weren’t at the stage in their life where they were yet having children, and even if some of my wider friendship group were, we all lived in different parts of the city (and leaving the house to go anywhere further than ten minutes from home with a newborn felt like a military operation). I suppose what I felt most prominently, which isn’t particularly comfortable for a 30-something woman to admit, is that I was lonely. I had lots of friends, I was successful professionally, and yet, when I was at home, I felt lonely. This was further compounded by the fact that I was working in an industry (dating), where it was my day-to-day to produce products people could use to find a match and I was struggling to find a woman who was like-minded to go
These women are everything. They are the ones who make your day brighter, who remind you that you’re not alone, who will pick up your little one from nursery if you get stuck at work, or who will make you laugh.
MICHELLE KENNEDY |
for a coffee with. A little like dating, I also experienced a lot of “I have to introduce you to my friend, she’s a new mommy too,” only to go through an awkward date where you realize the only thing you have in common is the fact that you both have a child. You don’t share the same outlook on life, values, interests. That’s actually even more isolating to be honest. The second was my frustration with the existing products on the market aimed at mothers. I didn’t recognize the tone of voice the products used, or the look and feel of the products. They felt outdated, old fashioned, and, in some cases, patronizing. To me, I didn’t feel like I’d suddenly aged, or become less modern, less cool, just because I’d become a mom, and yet, the products seemed to have that expectation. I found that confusing. I still had an expectation of great user experience, from products like Uber, or Instagram, but I wasn’t getting that. MINI |

We know schedules can be hectic— so tell us about yours! What does a typical day look like right now?
MINI |
My day starts at 6:30. I try to get a bit of work in before Fin wakes up. Once we’ve had the circus of getting breakfast, dressed and out of the house, I drop Fin at school and head straight to the office. There is no typical day for Peanut. We might be head down working on product development, or speaking to partners, or engaging with our users. It’s full-on, but I am so passionate about what we’re doing, I love it.

How would you describe your personal style?
I suppose it’s casual elegance. I love classic pieces with great tailoring. I equally love a masculine cut on a blazer or trousers. I also have a lot of jeans— so much denim! A great pair of highwaisted jeans with a blazer can make you look together, even if you’ve just thrown it on.

It’s opened my eyes to the wonder of life. The moments which Fin is in awe of, that I take for granted. It’s changed my outlook on life. In terms of challenges, it’s difficult to switch off from the worry about the babes. I worry if I am getting it right.

Everything! It can range from diet, to education, to happiness, to should I have his hair cut. It’s endless, sometimes big, sometimes small, but I try hard now to stop worrying, and live in the moment— and speak to mama friends if I need some reassurance that I am not being neurotic (I usually am)!

What do you think is the one thing no one really warns you about?

Loneliness. I never, ever anticipated that when I had Fin I would feel lonely. I bought “stuff ” so I felt prepared, but I don’t know whether anyone really spoke about those initial months, how isolating it can be, and how terrifying.

Looking back to your first days as a mom, what advice would you give yourself?
Find some friends, a support network, some women who are on your wave length. They say it takes a village to raise a child. Where is our village today? We don’t all live where we grew up, with our families close by. We move for work, for lifestyle, and that kind of mobility takes its toll on your ability to have a support network. How do you find advice and support? How do you make bonds and relationships? I think it can be extremely tough to admit, “yes, I’m having a hard time, I’m feeling lonely, or isolated.” It doesn’t make you weird, it doesn’t make you a bad mom, and yet we fear that verbalizing these things will. Being able to find a network of like-minded women enables you to have those conversations that you want, that you need, and not to fear it.
What is most important to you in raising your son?
MINI |
Keeping him questioning. I want him to always recognize when something isn’t right. You can only do that by questioning why we do things a certain way, and challenging that if it feels wrong.

If you could give your son one piece of advice, what would it be?

It’s ok to fail. We learn from failure, don’t worry about it, it’s a good thing.

Since it’s the holidays, tell us about your own family traditions. What do you look forward to doing with your son this time of year?

We’re creating new traditions! I am Catholic and my husband is Jewish. Finlay’s birthday is also in December. It means we spend the month of December in constant celebration! From lighting the Hanukkah candles, to putting up the tree, and of course, the

Elf on the Shelf keeping an eye on Fin’s behavior in December, I love every minute of it. Since Fin was born, we’ve been taking him to Santa’s Grotto at Harrods. More than anything, I love that I have a photo of him every year, and can see how much he’s changed.

Mother of two and founder of danceinspired fitness method LEKfit (a hit with celebs like Busy Philipps and Emmy Rossum), Lauren Kleban opens up her 1920’s English Tudor home in Los Angeles’ Hancock Park and spills her daily wellness routine, plus how moms can get back into their workout groove.
What are some of your favorite elements in your home? Where did they come from?

Thank you for coming! We wanted to maintain the integrity of our traditional Hancock Park home (which is a 1920’s era English Tudor), while adding our own modern, eclectic rock ‘n’ roll vibe. I am very much a minimalist and prefer clean lines. I love a simple color of palette of black, white, and grey and my husband prefers more color so we agree on “pops” of color throughout the home.

Do you have a favorite room in your home?

I love our living room. It’s the first room you see as you enter the foyer and sets the tone. When we were decorating, we used the Greenwich Hotel in NYC for inspiration. We wanted a warm and inviting space with bold accents.

For starters, living in LA, we’re fortunate to have local access to great sources of antique items. We just purchased a framed vintage American flag from the Rose Bowl swap meet that I’m totally in love with. The antique crystal chandelier that hangs in the dining room was our first major purchase as homeowners together, so that will always be special. It sits above a ten-foot Tom Dixon brass dining room table. We love the combination of the two together. Also, our growing collection of contemporary and pop art has also heavily influenced our décor.

Where do you spend the most time in your home?

Since the studio is located in our garage (until spring 2018), I spend most of my time there. As a family, we spend most of our time in the kitchen or the patio directly off of the kitchen. Living in LA, we are spoiled by the great weather most of the year, which allows us the possibility of indoor/outdoor living.

Talk to us about your kids’ rooms. What inspired you in creating their spaces?

I never thought I would choose traditional blue and pink for my son (Miles) and daughter (Romy), but it happened and the kids couldn’t be happier. They have a Jack and Jill bathroom that is neutral with splashes of color so everyone is happy. I am a bit of a neat freak, so thankfully both kids have ample storage for their belongings. We had an entire wall in both rooms outfitted with built-in shelves and cabinets, which has been perfect storage for active (and messy) kids. I kept both rooms simple with small accents so they can be free to play and make it their own space.

What do you love most about raising your kids in Los Angeles?

I love the tremendous amount of cultural activities that are available to us as a family. For example, we live down the street from LACMA and the La Brea Tar Pits, which we often visit. Also, I always think of LA of a bunch of little cities all wrapped up into one. So, we can alternate between one day visiting urban Downtown and the next day drive the kids to Malibu Country Mart and explore nearby beaches.

I’ve taught at numerous

I also wanted to create something more feminine, so I consistently draw inspiration from my ballet, jazz, burlesque, and yoga training to create fun and effective workouts that empower women, and promote body love and acceptance. Let’s talk wellness— You are the founder of LEKfit afterall! What is your daily wellness routine?

I like to sweat every day. I typically teach one class in the morning and when I’m out of town, I’ll stream LEKfit ondemand. I begin each day with warm water and lemon then have an all green juice after my workout. Getting in an early workout and necessary nutrients sets me up to make healthy choices throughout the day. Wellness is about being in tune with your body and

I try to stay away from gluten, cow’s milk, alcohol and meat. I eat lots of fish, brown rice, vegetables and fruit. Nothing is completely off limits however, if I am craving something, I eat it!

We know schedules can be hectic— so tell us about yours! What does a typical day look like right now?
MINI |
My day typically begins at 6:30 with emails, teaching or calls. My kids wake up around 7 or 7:30 so if I’m I already in the studio, they will sneak in to give me kisses. I spend the rest of the day working with the LEKfit team on content, social media and various projects. I try my best to take both kids to their weekly dance classes and I’ll break to pick my son up from school as often as possible. Owning a business means there is always work to be done. But, putting the phone down and walking away from the computer to have dinner as a family has been a top priority for my me and my husband. I try

to wrap things up for the day around 9:30 to take an epsom salt bubble bath. Then I read, watch a little Netflix, and spend time with my husband before bed. Moms often have a hard time getting back into the workout routine after baby or even just juggling the kids, what would you suggest they do?

I have the best nanny in the entire world and LEKfit would not be possible without her. She has become a fixture in the studio, in addition to helping us raise Miles and Romy. Having a husband who supports me on the business side also helps!

It’s super important to be gentle and patient with your body after baby. Take it slow, be realistic, and don’t stress. Be sure to workout with a trainer or an instructor who has had a baby or has a very clear understanding of the pre and postnatal body. Make time for yourself and don’t let “mom guilt” creep in! You can’t take care of your family if you don’t take care of you.

FA S T FA C T S HOLIDAY TRADITIONS I’m really looking forward to taking a few days to just hang at home and spend time with family. We’ll celebrate Hanukkah and Christmas with our family at our home then head to Coronado in San Diego for a few days. This year is extra special because it’s the first year the kids are completely aware of the joy of the holidays and what they mean. It’s special to watch it through their eyes.

I have had to become much better at organizing and scheduling. Also, I’ve learned how to delegate to my super amazing staff at LEKfit.

Glitter Guide founder and mom of two Taylor Sterling shares her everyday routine chasing after her Minis, Elodie and Benji.
My husband brings a lunch to work. He usually has leftovers and he will make his and my daughter’s lunch for school. I wish she would eat our leftovers, but she always comes home hungry when we try that. So she typically has a PB&J sandwich, fruit, Pirate’s Booty (a staple in this house) and string cheese. I usually make my son’s lunch which is a mix of fruit and leftovers. 6:45 AM |
My day usually starts before 6 and while it’s never easy, I’ve gotten pretty used to it over the years. My kids are both early birds. 5:45 AM |
I wish my kids would snuggle in bed with us till it was light out, but they are way too wiggly and excited. We usually head down stairs right away and start making coffee and making them a morning snack. 6:00 AM |
My husband and I are sipping our coffees and feeling a bit more alive. We feed my son a little breakfast since he wakes up hungry. Right now, he likes frozen mini pancakes from Trader Joe’s, cantaloupe and chopped up apples. I’m weaning him off drinking so much milk so I try to avoid it until later in the morning so that he eats his breakfast. At the same time, my daughter usually has a snack on the couch while watching a show (Vamperina is her current favorite). She’s not that hungry when she wakes up, but will usually eat the same things as her brother a little later in the morning. 6:20 AM |
By now, my daughter has usually moved onto playing with her toys while my husband and I go and get changed. We bring my son with us to change him too. He usually plays with something like empty makeup boxes or an empty bottle (he likes things that aren’t actual toys) while we get ready. Thankfully, since I work from home, I usually just freshen up a tiny bit and stay in comfortable clothes. I take the kids to school/nanny every day and my husband picks them up. 7:00 AM |
I will gather my daughter’s clothes and get her dressed while she’s playing. Trying to get her dressed is the hardest part of the morning routine. There is usually some push-back. If I involve her in picking out some of her clothes, that helps, also bringing the clothes downstairs to her is a lot easier than trying to get her up7:15 AM |
a toy to play with. That sometimes makes it easier. A typical day for me means I am working from my home office. Sometimes I have meetings, photo shoots, or events to attend, but I only work four days out of the week (Monday through Thursday) so I tend to have a lot to accomplish and need to get busy on my laptop. I’m currently doing a little bit of everything for Glitter Guide, and I took over our social media temporarily a few months ago, so the morning tends to be a lot of planning and pushing out content on social media, then working on any sponsored content we need to get done that week, followed by checking off my deadlines on Asana, then emails, and any other miscellaneous things I’m working on. Throughout the day, my team and I communicate a lot through Slack. Since we’re remote, it’s the best way for us to quickly get help or clarification on things. With how much I have to get done, I tend to run out of time. I wish there were more hours in the day! I also would love to get back to going to the gym around 11 AM everyday. It makes me feel so much happier and balanced when I get out of the house and take a break. I have fallen off that majorly this past year, and I can’t wait to get back to it. For now, most days I work on my laptop all day until 4 PM without much of a break. I even eat in front of my computer— I know, so bad! 8:30 AM - 4:00 PM |

The family gets in and it’s all hands on deck for the next three hours! It’s a bit manic after school. The kids are hungry and tired and my husband and I are usually the same. Usually I will spend about 20 minutes cleaning the kitchen and getting it ready for my husband to cook dinner (he does all the cooking and I do most of the house cleaning). My husband will play with the kids and give them a small snack.
Dinner time! We eat pretty early since our kids are starving and they go to bed [soon]. We’ve tried to feed them first and have our own meal later, but it tends to get too late for us and we are too tired to cook later in the evening. So we all like to eat at the same time. We always have our dinner at the table as a family. It’s hectic, but it’s one of the only times we all get to be together and sit!

will fight going to bed untill about 8 PM. It’s time for us to chill and relax! I usually do my evening skincare routine, fold laundry, and tidy up before I take any time to sit and relax. I like to take a breather on the couch for at least 30 minutes before I go to bed. These days, I’m asleep by 9:30 PM. With how hectic and busy our days are, and with occasional night wakings and early mornings, it’s the only way I can get through the day!

I will join my husband upstairs and help get the kids bathed and ready for bed. My son is pretty tired at this point and I quickly try to get him into his pajamas, read a little book, have some milk and then brush his teeth. He’s still sleeping in our room because we can’t seem to find a way to get these kids to both be on the exact same sleep schedule, and it seems like at least one kid is waking up for one reason or another at least once a week. 6:50 PM |
My son is usually asleep and I help my husband with my daughter. By now, she’s usually changed and had her teeth brushed. Luckily, both my kids love brushing their teeth so it’s never really an issue (brushing hair is a different story!) My husband and I will snuggle with my daughter and read a few books. I’m usually the one who will be the last to leave and give her a goodnight kiss. 7:15 PM |
