What products should I use to cleanse my child’s atopic skin?

When it comes to washing your child’s atopic-prone skin, experts recommend using a gentle, soap-free, fragrance-free nourishing cleanser.

What do you need to know If your child has very dry skin with red and/ or very itchy patches, he/she may have atopic skin or commonly known as eczema. Babies and children with eczema tend to experience chronic skin flare-ups that may be so itchy that they can prevent your child from sleeping at night. And you too of course...

What is eczema? It comes from a combination of two key factors: an extremely reactive immune system and very dry skin. The immune system responds excessively when it is in contact with allergens or other environmental situations. It can be hereditary. There is a 40-50% probability that the child will also develop eczema when one of the parents is atopic, and a 50-80% probability when both parents are atopic. Other causes are pollution or an over-zealous hygiene routine. Indeed, atopic eczema is more common in industrialised countries than in developing ones!

Why does eczema affect dry skin? Because it is more sensitive. The skin usually creates a thin layer of water and oils (lipids) on its surface to protect itself, known as a hydrolipidic film. Furthermore, it produces the filaggrin, a molecule that serves as a “cement” to ensure its permeability. When the level of lipids or filaggrin is not sufficient, the skin allows water to evaporate. It loses its permeability and doesn’t complete its role as a barrier against certain harmful factors; allergens can thus enter the system easily. When skin itches and is irritated, a situation that can affect the well-being of the youngest, especially their sleep quality. However, atopic-prone skin doesn’t disrupt their lives every day. Between two flare-ups, there are some periods of respite that you can extend via simple daily precautions and proper hydration.

Before giving birth, we just assume that our baby would have soft and perfect skin. We were taken aback when Junyd broke out with a bad case of baby acne in the early weeks after birth. He would have dry patches on his face and would subside over time, but his skin always seems slightly dry and red. Our PD eventually diagnosed that he was prone to eczema and allergic to quite a few items. I had sensitive skin and minor eczema when I was young, which might explain his condition. According to my research, steroids are effective in treating eczema but I didn’t want to use them excessively. We have been using Mustela Normal Range since Junyd’s birth and heard from other moms that Mustela’s Stelatopia Face Cream has helped manage eczema for their babies. I gave it a try and was pretty pleased right from the very start! I like how fast the cream gets absorbed into the skin and is safe for his face and eyelids. It doesn’t have a sticky texture. Moreover, as a working mom, I appreciate that I do not have to worry that his eyes get irritated. I am quite amazed at how fast the rashes subside, often in a matter of a few days. The cream has made a difference to Junyd’s well-being as eczema breakout would affect his sleep. Even as he is turning two now, his face would sometimes flare up, and I would apply Stelatopia Face Cream as a preventive measure before it worsens. And it works! I would definitely recommend it as the gentle formula allows frequent applications, and with the price point, it is worth giving it a try!
