Raising Awareness for Healthier Pregnancies
CELEBRATING FAMILY AND COMMUNITY IN CEC IN THIS ISSUE
As we present this special Family Issue of B/ACE Magazine, we reflect on the extraordinary network of people and organizations who truly embody the spirit of family within Communities Empowered through Construction (CEC). From job sites to training workshops, and through partnerships that strengthen our mission, each of you has become an essential part of our story.
We begin by honoring Jerry Lewis at JLL Development, whose visionary leadership entrusted CEC to bring his dream to life. Jerry’s belief in our organization laid the foundation for what CEC has become today, and his continued partnership inspires us to keep building stronger communities.
We are also thrilled to recognize some of the incredible contributors who have supported and advanced our mission. A heartfelt thank you to ONNI Development, Cornell Burnett of Intren Institute, and Latecia at ComEd along with her amazing team of workforce partners. Your unwavering dedication has played a vital role in driving opportunities and success within the communities we serve.
Our gratitude extends to Troy Schaumleffel and the Power Construction team, Phaedra Leslie of All Masonry, and Jackie Gallo and Shamar White at Revolution Workshop. Your commitment and alignment with CEC’s vision continue to propel our efforts forward.
Looking ahead, we’re excited to announce new partnerships that will expand our reach and deepen our impact. Goodwill, a newcomer to the Lawndale community, will bring valuable resources and opportunities to the area. Meanwhile, Elevate will play a crucial role in enhancing training and support for subcontractors across Chicago. We are eager to work alongside these partners and welcome them into the CEC family.
Finally, we celebrate the skilled tradespeople who represent the heart and soul of CEC Jermaine Johnson, Reginald Blakney, Tishawna Williams, Lee Daniels, and Darryl Campbell. Your hard work, camaraderie, and commitment define what it means to build not just structures but strong, supportive communities.
To everyone who has been part of the CEC family, thank you for your trust, passion, and dedication. Together, we’re building more than careers, we’re building a lasting legacy of resilience, opportunity, and growth.

Editorial Note
When I first started my event planning business back in the early 2000s, family was everything. In fact, they were the business. My cousins suited up in all-black custom company t-shirts or crisp white shirts with bow ties, taking on roles as caterers, delivery drivers, bartenders, and even the cleaning staff. My family was my first team—the people I could count on to show up, no questions asked. They believed in my vision when it was just a dream and motivated me to keep going when things got tough. Even today, my sister is a key player in the success of Communities Empowered Through Construction (CEC), while my mom still answers phones, files paperwork, and makes coffee. They have been, and continue to be, “ten toes down” for me and CEC’s success.
As we enter the holiday season, it’s only fitting that we celebrate family—the people who have poured love, encouragement, and unwavering support into our lives. When I reflect on all the wonderful individuals who have supported CEC since its inception, my heart overflows with gratitude. This issue of B/ACE Magazine is dedicated to them.
Family influences and enriches our lives in countless ways. Take, for example, this month’s Face of B/ACE: one of four siblings whose father inspired them to pursue careers in the construction industry. Remarkably, three of the four siblings followed in their father’s footsteps, building their futures in construction—a testament to the power of family influence.
This issue is all about family, and it features expert advice on maximizing partnerships with your child’s teacher, as
CELEBRATING FAMILY IN BUSINESS AND COMMUNITY
well as stories of perseverance through infertility that ultimately led to the joy of motherhood. We’ve curated content to inspire, uplift, and remind us all of the strength and love found in family.
As we close out the year, I want to express my deepest gratitude to the many workforce partners, general contractors, subcontractors, elected officials, and candidates who have answered our calls and supported CEC throughout the year. You are part of our extended family, and without you, we could not continue to make a lasting impact in our community.
As the saying goes, “Family isn’t just an important thing. It’s everything”.

PREECLAMPSIA:
Raising Awareness for Healthier Pregnancies
By Kimberly Butler-Brooks
Preeclampsia is a serious condition that affects countless women during pregnancy. Kimberly Butler-Brooks, an ambassador for the Preeclampsia Foundation, shares her personal journey and valuable insights.
Can you share a bit about your personal journey with preeclampsia and how it impacted your pregnancy experience?
I was diagnosed with preeclampsia halfway through my pregnancy after a blood pressure spike caused my eye vessels to rupture. The remainder of my pregnancy involved journaling my blood pressure daily, bed rest, and emotional challenges. I couldn’t celebrate or prepare for our son’s arrival as I had hoped.
What signs or symptoms should expectant mothers be aware of that might indicate preeclampsia, and why is early detection so crucial?
Common symptoms that mothers may experience include elevated blood pressure, swelling, and headaches. It’s important to monitor these signs closely because things can quickly change. The earlier they detect that something is wrong or out of the ordinary, the better the outcome.
What is the mission of the Preeclampsia Foundation, and what key initiatives does it currently promote to support women and families affected by this condition?
Its mission is to improve outcomes for hypertensive pregnancy disorders through education, support, community engagement, and healthcare improvement. Key initiatives include MoMMA’s Voices, the Cuff Kit Initiative, and the Take 10 program, which is partly led by a focus group of Black preeclampsia survivors. We use events like Gathering Tables to empower and encourage women to be their own advocates.
How can family members and friends support someone who may be experiencing preeclampsia? Are there specific resources or support systems offered by the foundation?
Family and friends can be supportive by listening and being observant. Pregnancy is hard, especially under stress, and sometimes an outside perspective is needed to spot issues or advocate for you. I encourage women to share their diagnosis with loved ones so they can help monitor changes or act in emergencies.
“AWARENESS
WILL HELP WOMEN HAVE SAFER, HEALTHIER PREGNANCIES”.
Are there any lifestyle changes or preventive measures you would suggest to expectant mothers to help lower their risk of developing preeclampsia?
Unfortunately, there is no proven way to prevent preeclampsia. But it is believed that taking a daily aspirin during pregnancy may reduce your chances of developing it. Expectant mothers should also try to maintain a healthy diet and follow any doctor-approved exercise routines.
As an ambassador for the Preeclampsia Foundation, what are your hopes for the future in terms of awareness, research, and support for preeclampsia, and how can our readers get involved?
I hope more women share their stories to normalize discussing pregnancy challenges alongside its joys. Awareness will help women have safer, healthier pregnancies. To get involved, your readers can visit the Preeclampsia Foundation website, and if they’re a Black woman impacted by preeclampsia, they can complete the Take 10 survey to aid research.
Through her role as an ambassador for the Preeclampsia Foundation, Kimberly Butler-Brooks advocates for greater awareness, research, and support for women affected by preeclampsia, offering hope for healthier pregnancies in the future.

Heat up a skillet and add 2 teaspoons of butter. Once the butter melts, sprinkle in garlic salt and pepper to taste. Add the flour and stir together to create a roux. Cook until it thickens.
Gradually add 1 cup of water, stirring continuously until the mixture is smooth. Stir in the chicken base, then slowly pour in the heavy whipping cream while reducing the heat.
Gradually add the Parmesan cheese, stirring until fully melted and the sauce is creamy. If the
sauce becomes too thick, add the remaining water a little at a time until the desired consistency is reached. At this point, you have Alfredo sauce.
To turn it into seafood Alfredo sauce: -Rinse the shrimp and add them to the sauce about 10 minutes before serving.
-Rinse the mussels and add them to the sauce 5 minutes before serving. Cook until all the mussels open (discard any mussels that don’t open after 8 minutes).
To serve, plate the pasta in the center of the dish, then generously top it with the seafood Alfredo sauce.

Building Her Legacy: Crystal’s Journey in Construction
As the face of B/ACE’s Family Issue, Crystal exemplifies resilience, leadership, and family values in her journey to make her mark in the construction industry.
Crystal’s decision to enter the construction industry was inspired by her father, a seasoned professional with over 40 years of experience. “My father plays a big part in influencing my decision to work in the construction industry. I wanted to follow in his footsteps,” Crystal shares. Watching projects come to life and knowing she contributed to their development fuels her passion. “Seeing a project finished excites me—just knowing I was a part of that development on the job is a great feeling.”
Since starting as a union laborer in 2016, Crystal’s career has been defined by growth and determination. Her journey has taken her from working on-site to stepping into her current role as a Project Manager. “Absolutely, I’ve grown professionally. My proudest achievement is still in the works,” she says. Crystal attributes her success to her leadership skills and her unrelenting drive. “My willingness to get the job done, no matter what, sets me apart.”
However, Crystal is no stranger to challenges, especially as a woman in a male-dominated industry. “The biggest challenge is being a woman in this field. Women aren’t taken seriously in the construction industry,” she explains. But Crystal remains focused on creating change.
“I want to see more women in higher positions in this industry.”
Her role as the face of BACE Magazine represents more than just recognition; it’s a celebration of her journey and the possibilities for others like her. “Being the face of BACE means Black excellence to me. It’s an opportunity to show that people who look like me can be successful in this industry. I appreciate that.”
Crystal’s family has been a pillar of support throughout her career. Her father’s influence opened the door to construction, but it was

her faith and work ethic that helped her build her own path. “My parents instilled God in my life, and with Him, I can do all things. That’s a value I will carry forever.”
As a Black woman in the industry, Crystal acknowledges the uphill battle but takes pride in showing up and proving herself every day. “Me working hard, showing up, and earning my place is how I’m overcoming challenges.”
While her father created the foundation for her career, Crystal’s dedication is shaping her own legacy. “My dad created the path, and I’m grateful for that. But my hard work and dedication are what create a name for me.”
She envisions a future where her story inspires others. “The legacy I want to create is that I dominated the construction industry as a successful Black woman.”
Crystal’s journey, driven by determination, faith, and family, is a powerful reminder that barriers can be broken, and new legacies can be built. She is paving the way not only for herself but also for the next generation of women in construction.
CRYSTAL AND DAD
A LEGACY IN THE MAKING:
BACE Magazine highlights Derrick Ellis (Crystal’s father), a seasoned superintendent, who reflects on his career, family legacy, and the values he’s passed on to the next generation.
For over 20 years, Derrick has been at the helm of some of Chicago’s most iconic construction projects. As he approaches retirement, he reflects on his journey and the lessons that have shaped him.
What have been some of the most memorable projects you’ve worked on?
Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of working on some truly iconic projects. The United Center holds a special place for me because it’s such a central part of Chicago’s culture. The Sophy Hotel was another highlight—a blend of modern design and comfort that showcases what’s possible when craftsmanship meets creativity. The Obama Presidential Center has been particularly meaningful because it’s not every day you work on something with such profound historical and cultural significance. And of course, the Shedd Aquarium, with its blend of architectural beauty and purpose, stands out as a project I’m proud to have been a part of. Each project challenged me in different ways and contributed to the legacy I’m leaving behind in this industry.
communities. That perspective influenced how I approached every project and every role I took on, ensuring I always gave it my best.
What values or lessons did you aim to instill in your children, especially Crystal, who is now following in your footsteps?
I’ve always emphasized hard work, consistency, and dedication. These are the principles that carried me through my career, and I wanted my children to embody them in whatever paths they chose. For Crystal specifically, I’ve encouraged her to not only work hard but also lead with integrity and compassion. I wanted her to understand that success is about more than individual achievement—it’s about how you uplift others and contribute to something greater than yourself.
“Growing up surrounded by construction taught me the importance of building—not just structures but also relationships and legacies. ”
How did growing up in a family rooted in construction shape your perspective on the industry?
Growing up surrounded by construction taught me the importance of building—not just structures but also relationships and legacies. Watching my family work hard and take pride in their craft instilled in me a deep respect for the industry. It shaped my understanding that construction is more than just a job; it’s about creating something lasting, something that serves
How did you stay centered throughout your career, and how did you balance work with family life?
My faith has always been my anchor. No matter how tough the days got, I could lean on my belief in God to stay grounded. My family was my “why,” my motivation to keep pushing forward. Balancing work with family wasn’t always easy, but I made it a priority to be present—whether it was at church, family dinners, or just spending quality time together.
What advice would you give to the next generation of builders, including Crystal, as they navigate this evolving industry?
My advice is simple: stay adaptable and never stop learning. Technology is transforming the industry, and those who embrace it will thrive. At the same time, don’t lose sight of the foundational skills and values that make great builders: attention to detail, teamwork, and a strong work ethic. For Crystal and others, I’d say always approach your work with pride and purpose. And remember, the structures you create are more than just buildings—they’re a part of people’s lives and communities.
The trench coat is almost like a signature. Can you tell us the story behind it?
That trench coat represents my journey. As a kid, I wore it to church with my parents, and it became a symbol of my faith and the values I grew up with. Over the years, it’s been a reminder of where I come from and what I stand for. It’s seen me through challenges and triumphs, always reminding me of my roots and my walk with God. To this day, wearing it feels like carrying a piece of my history and faith into every project and interaction.

MOTHERHOOD:
Overcoming Fertility Challenges with Faith and Resilience
Navigating infertility is a deeply personal and emotional journey. One mother shares her path to motherhood, highlighting her struggles, triumphs, and the unwavering hope that brought her daughter to life.
Fear, shame, sadness—these are the first words that come to mind when I think about my fertility journey before the birth of my daughter. Fear that I might never know the joys of motherhood. Shame that I was the problem, that my body wouldn’t or couldn’t do the one thing it was created to do. Sadness I experienced month after month, year after year without success.
The Role of a Support System
Infertility can be an isolating diagnosis, especially in the Black community. Among family and friends, it can sometimes be dismissed as not a “real medical problem.” Sharing my sadness about another month without success with a sister who already has children, or a friend planning their second or third baby shower, wasn’t always comforting.
Some people brushed it off with comments like, “It will happen when you stop trying,” “It’s okay, kids are a nonstop job,” or, “Imagine how much money you’ll save if you don’t have kids.” Others couldn’t understand why I would want to subject my body and
“In week 20 of my pregnancy, I went into early labor”.
Finding Hope and Connection
Fertility struggles can feel isolating, but I found solace in confiding in my innermost circle— people I knew wouldn’t judge me. I also connected with individuals who were on their own fertility journeys. We bonded, swapped information on doctors, shared treatment plans, and discussed everything from research to food and fitness routines.
bank account to the stressors of fertility treatment. Even my parents said, “You can’t miss what you never had.” Like, REALLY?!
And yet, I found a safe space in select family members and friends. While they may not have been able to relate directly, their actions and empathy provided much-appreciated support.
Treatments and Resources
My husband and I underwent treatment after treatment, each one more invasive than the last. Our journey included Lupron, IUI, IVF, clearing fallopian tubes, HCG shots, daily hormone shots, and suppositories, among other things.
The month I became pregnant with my daughter, I added one additional non-traditional treatment: acupuncture! I went weekly (sometimes more often) during this cycle until we heard the strong, steady heartbeat of my baby. I sincerely believe that God and Dr. Zhou teamed up to bring our blessing to life in 2011.
That circle helped me navigate some of the toughest moments. FIND YOUR PEOPLE. They may not be the ones you usually lean on, and that’s okay. Connecting with those who share similar experiences offers a unique form of support. It means so much to have someone who will listen to your frustrations without dismissing them as trivial.
The Meaning of Resilience and Motherhood
In addition to my journey to conceive, I faced the challenge of carrying my baby to term. At week 20 of my pregnancy, I went into early labor, resulting in hospitalization, emergency surgery, complete bedrest, weekly hormone shots, and bi-weekly ultrasounds with high-risk specialists.
“CONNECTING WITH THOSE WHO SHARE SIMILAR EXPERIENCE OFFERS A UNIQUE FOR OF SUPPORT”
Those years of infertility and months of a high-risk pregnancy taught me resilience and made me even more grateful for my blessing. I don’t take my journey for granted, and I appreciate my motherhood experience more as my daughter gets older.
To anyone starting their journey, I encourage you to exhaust ALL possibilities. Don’t be afraid to think outside the box and combine holistic approaches with traditional medicine.

MAXIMIZING PARENT TEACHER CONFERENCES FOR STUDENT SUCCESS
B/ACE Magazine sat down with Tamara Robbins, a City of Chicago educator, to discuss how parents can make the most of parent-teacher conferences.
Parent-teacher conferences are a vital part of a child’s educational journey. They offer a platform for collaboration, understanding, and actionable strategies to support students in reaching their fullest potential.
Can you share why parent-teacher conferences are so important for a child’s education?
Parent-teacher conferences provide a realistic view of a child’s performance. A grade, whether passing or failing, is just data. When discussing a child’s performance with a parent, teachers can share the journey of how the child reached their current level—whether the class
came easily or required extra effort. Conferences highlight areas for improvement and allow for strategic planning to support the child’s progress. It’s all about teamwork.
From an educator’s perspective, what common mistakes do parents make during these meetings?
Some common mistakes parents make include assuming that their child’s behavior and performance at school mirrors their behavior at home or outside the classroom. Another issue arises when parents read assignment requirements but don’t fully understand the expectations. For example, a parent may question why their child received a lower grade in a subject they usually excel in, pointing out completed requirements. However, upon seeing other students’ work, the parent might realize their child’s effort was minimal. This understanding can lead to a collaborative plan for improvement while enlightening teachers about underlying disabilities or challenges affecting the student.
How can parents prepare for a conference ahead of time?
Parents should review parent portals, which are typically updated weekly, to track their child’s performance. Checking in with their child about their progress and developing a plan for improvement or maintaining success is also helpful.
What types of questions should parents be ready to ask during the meeting?
While questions vary by subject, parents should generally ask about homework volume and the weight of assignments on the final grade. For instance, they can inquire about how tests compare to classwork in grading. If their child has diagnosed behavioral issues, parents should come prepared to ask questions and share strategies to help the teacher and child work together effectively.
Should parents bring specific materials or examples, like homework or test scores? If parents have specific questions about a grade
or assignment, it’s beneficial to bring the related materials to the meeting so the teacher can provide further insight.
How can parents foster a collaborative tone during the conference rather than an adversarial one?
Parents should approach the conference with an open mind, understanding that a child’s performance often has a backstory and isn’t personal. In high school, for example, students may perform better in one subject than another due to various factors, such as teaching styles. Occasionally, students may misinterpret strict rules as teacher bias. Being open to these dynamics fosters collaboration.
What are some effective ways for parents to address concerns about their child’s performance or behavior?
Many schools encourage students to attend conferences. Hearing both the teacher’s and the student’s perspectives can create understanding and resolve concerns. Parents should remain open-minded, and teachers should present details about any disruptive behavior in a clear, objective manner.
How can parents better understand and respond to teacher feedback?
To better understand feedback, parents should remain objective and consider the broader context of their child’s classroom behavior. For example, children often test limits as part of expressing independence or withdraw if they’re shy. If a child underperforms, parents can request to see examples of successful assignments to identify improvement opportunities. Teachers can also clarify student conduct codes to ensure mutual understanding of expectations.
What steps can parents take after the conference to support their child’s learning at home?
Parents should check daily if their child has homework and, if possible, create a dedicated study space at home free from distractions like mobile devices. Monitoring device usage, if needed for learning, is also essential. Independent reading benefits students across all levels by improving comprehension and critical thinking skills.
How can parents and teachers maintain ongoing communication throughout the school year?
Teachers should reach out to parents for both positive and negative updates. Parents and teachers can agree on a preferred communication method, whether by phone, email, or approved text messaging platforms.
What advice would you give to parents of children with learning differences or special needs?
Frequent communication is crucial. Meetings can happen in person, over the
phone, or through text. While Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) provide a clinical view of the child’s needs, parents can offer valuable personal insights that help teachers tailor their approach for better outcomes.
How should parents handle conferences if they feel their child is being misunderstood by the teacher?
Patience is essential. Parents should avoid being confrontational and instead offer information about how the child feels or struggles. Teachers often manage large numbers of students daily, so providing clear insights can help foster mutual understanding. Developing a personalized plan between the teacher and student can address misunderstandings effectively.
Is there a particular success story or memorable parent-teacher conference that stands out to you?
There was a parent known for always opposing teachers’ views and defending their child. During one conference, the teacher calmly presented a detailed report about the child’s behavior and performance. To the teacher’s surprise, the parent responded positively, saying, “For some reason, I believe you.” While the child’s improved behavior was short-lived, the teacher was able to establish trust with the parent and initiate a step toward change. Although the student eventually left school, the experience reinforced the teacher’s belief in the power of calm, honest communication.
“ AI-driven platforms are designed to keep children engaged, often leading to excessive screen time”.
Artificial intelligence (AI) is no longer a distant concept, it’s embedded in our daily lives and directly shaping the way our children learn, play, and grow. From virtual tutors like Khan Academy’s AI assistant to interactive toys that respond intelligently to commands, AI tools are becoming central to kids’ experiences. While these technologies can provide remarkable opportunities, they also raise questions about privacy, safety, and balance.
One major benefit of AI is its ability to personalize learning. Tools like Duolingo, DreamBox, and Prodigy adapt to a child’s skill level, helping them learn at their own pace. AI-powered apps for creative tasks, like drawing or storytelling, can spark kids’ imagination. But alongside these advantages come challenges, such as over-reliance on AI tools for problem-solving, which may limit critical thinking skills if not balanced with traditional methods.
AI-driven platforms are designed to keep children engaged, often leading to excessive screen time. YouTube Kids and video games that use AI to create immersive experiences can quickly pull kids into prolonged use. Excessive screen time can impact a child’s sleep, social development, and mental health.
To manage this, parents can set clear boundaries, such as screen-free zones or daily limits on usage. Opt for tools that promote active learning over passive consumption. Use apps like Google Family Link or Apple Screen Time to monitor and control device use.
“Excessive screen time can impact a child’s sleep, social development, and mental health”.
As parents, staying informed about AI tools and teaching kids mindful technology habits ensures they harness its benefits while growing into balanced, thoughtful individuals.

PROJECT ON THE HORIZON AFTER SCHOOL MATTERS –1065 N ORLEANS PROJECT
The After School Matters project at 1065 N Orleans embodies a bold vision to transform a historic building into a state-of-the-art facility dedicated to empowering Chicago’s youth. Located in the Cabrini-Green neighborhood at the corner of North Orleans and West Hill Streets, this 36,000-square-foot building was originally constructed in 1948 as a Catholic elementary school and most recently housed Architectural Artifacts, an antique dealer. Now, through a $27 million redevelopment effort designed by Eckenhoff Saunders Architects, this space will be reimagined as a vibrant hub of creativity, learning, and discovery.
Building Features and Design
The renovated facility will serve as a beacon of opportunity, offering cuttingedge amenities for students to explore their interests and build new skills. The building will feature a black box theater, the first After School Matterscontrolled gymnasium, a state-of-theart culinary kitchen, art studios, STEM labs, a woodshop, and outdoor spaces specifically designed for urban gardening. This thoughtful balance of creative and technical spaces fosters an environment where teens can participate in programs ranging from dance and theater to sports, cooking, and STEM exploration.
Historical Significance and Community Impact
This project builds on a legacy that began 33 years ago with the late Maggie Daley’s founding of After School Matters. The redevelopment not only honors the building’s past but also reinvents it into a community landmark capable of serving nearly 1,500 students annually. The space will create an inspiring, discovery-driven environment where young people can unlock their potential and explore future career paths in a supportive setting.
Groundbreaking Ceremony
The groundbreaking event underscored the powerful community support behind the project. Mayor Brandon Johnson expressed the significance of investing in Chicago’s youth, remarking, “How we treat our young people really tells a lot about who we are as a society.” The event also featured former Mayor Richard M. Daley, who paid tribute to his late wife’s vision, alongside Illinois Senate President Don Harmon and Vice Mayor Walter Burnett, both of whom emphasized the importance of nurturing the next generation.
“
This project not only transforms a historic space but also provides a foundation for thousands of students to thrive”.
Looking Ahead
With construction underway and an ambitious fundraising goal, After School Matters aims to open the facility in Fall 2025. This project not only transforms a historic space but also provides a foundation for thousands of students to thrive. The development at 1065 N Orleans represents both the preservation of the past and a commitment to a brighter future, where the leaders of tomorrow are empowered to shape their own destinies.
UJAMAA Construction is honored to be part of this visionary project, creating a safe and inspiring space that will uplift the community and ensure that After School Matters continues to make a lasting impact on Chicago’s youth.
