Letter from the Editor
truly believe that December is ”The most wonderful time of the YEAR.” The winter issue is by far my favorite to produce and this year in particular because I was intentional about being in the moment! As we worked I realized that B/ACE is celebrating its 1st full year! Not to mention, I was coming off of my “Becoming Michelle Obama” high! As the team worked closely together I was constantly thinking, “Who are we becoming? Right now, I would say we are becoming, a great production team, and an organization connecting and inspiring our community. We are becoming more creative, more aware of the resources in our community, and we are committed to helping others “Become”. This issue, Faces of BACE are becoming plumbers and landscape laborers. This issue also includes financial advice and other goodies to help us on our journey of becoming. It’s packed with great holiday gift ideas, cozy and cute

sweaters, and my personal favorite, “A Motherless Mom During the Holiday’s.” While this time of the year is a bit magical for me, I know so many people find this time of the year especially difficult. So, since I don’t have a magic wand to erase all the pain that so many feel this time of year, I found “Besties and Brunch”, a local blog of phenomenal women inspiring our community one blog post at a time, to help share how to cope with a loss during the holidays. As we bring this year to a close be sure to reflect on all your accomplishments, whether big or small, new or old and utilize it as a launching pad for the New Year. Be intentional about what you want to accomplish… then go be great! On Behalf of the B/ACE Team, Happy Holidays!

The best gift I have ever received was a pair of of black and silver stiletto pumps from my brotherin-law. TIPS FOR STAYING
HEALTHY THIS WINTER
T

he wintertime brings us shorter days with less sunlight, more time indoors breathing dry recirculated air, and more germs to challenge our immune systems. These factors can make it challenging to maintain health and fitness during the winter months. Simply following these seven tips will help to put you and your family on the path to thriving and surviving the winter season!
3. Wash your hands: Develop a habit and routine of washing your hands often throughout the day. Washing your hands with soap and water at least five times a day will help to decrease transmission of germs and keep you healthy throughout the winter season. Also, because dirty hands can carry germs, teaching children to keep their hands away from their eyes, nose and mouth will also help to prevent illness.
1. Get moving: A great way to boost your immune system and keep colds away during the winter is to engage in moderate exercise daily, like walking for an hour. Find a new social group or pick up a fun hobby that keeps you motivated, engaged and busy during the winter time. Studies show that people with an active social life produce more germ fighting antibodies than those who are lonely.
4. Think before you eat: The winter is full of holidays that encourage the consumption of tasty comfort foods typically high in salt, sugar, and fat. Make sure to limit these types of food and indulge in dark leafy greens that are rich in antioxidants and vitamins A & K, low fat dairy that supplies vitamin D during the sun challenged months, and citrus fruits for immune boosting Vitamin C.
2. Schedule a Flu Shot: Flu shots are safe and effective at decreasing the risk of getting the Flu. If you do get the Flu, the Flu shot will decrease the severity of illness as well as the likelihood of devastating consequences of influenza such as pneumonia, respiratory failure or death. A 2018 study showed that flu vaccination among adults reduced the risk of being admitted to the ICU with flu by 82 percent. Getting a flu shot is a simple and easy thing to do that can have a huge positive impact on your well-being.
5. Protect your skin: The cold dry air can be devastating to your skin during the winter. Make sure to moisturize twice daily with a body cream to lock moisture into the skin. It is extremely important to apply a daily facial moisturizer with SPF regardless of skin tone. When out and about in the bitter cold, don’t forget to cover all areas of exposed skin with hats, scarves, and gloves. 6. Open a window: The wintertime brings all of us indoors, with the windows shut and few opportunities for circulation of
fresh air. Periodically open a window for a short period of time for air exchange. The heat in our homes can also dry up any moisture in the air. Running a humidifier can add much needed moisture into the air and is beneficial to those recovering from upper respiratory infections such as colds. For families with indoor allergies to dust mites, mold, or pet fur, consider adding a HEPA Filtration system to your bedroom to decrease the number of allergens that you are regularly exposed to. 7. Set a sleep schedule: A good night’s sleep is crucial to maintaining a healthy immune system capable of fighting off the countless germs encountered during the winter season. Adults should aim for a minimum of 8 hours of sleep per night. Babies and children need at least 10 hours of uninterrupted sleep each night. Establishing a good sleep routine in your household can be the difference between a winter full of sickness or health. Winter is such a special time of the year for families and individuals to come together and make lasting memories. Incorporating these seven health tips into your life will help you and your family enjoy all that the winter season has to offer, while staying healthy.

Marissa’s Favorite Things for Xmas Being a new mom has really put my life in high gear and has also shown me that time is not always on my side. That’s why I found a new love for kitchen gadgets that make my life a lot easier and allows me to save time cooking and more time with my family.

I am literally in LOVE with my air fryer. You can make quick tasty meals in minutes and still not lack on flavor, crunch, or quality. And did I forget to mention how fast the air fryer cooks your food! If you are a person who is always on the go or doesn’t have time to wait for the oven or stove to heat up, get an air fryer. It’s healthy and might just change your life.
“Is it TOASTY in here, or is it just me?”
I must admit, I am big on sandwiches. With all the variations and yummy recipes, what’s not to love? The toaster oven has become my new best friend as it tends to all my needs. From making French toast sticks in the morning to my very own “Hell’s Kitchen” sandwich creations. It’s also great for quick pick me up eats such as mini pizza’s and flatbreads.

B/ACE BOSS
B/ACE Boss is a celebration of Minorities/ Community Leaders, and Entrepreneurs making a difference in the construction industry. This quarter spotlight shines brightly on Tanya Jones and Jimmy Akintunde.

To paraphrase lyrics from a famous song by the late, great entertainer James Brown, “This is a man’s world, but it would be nothing without a woman or a girl.” For more than two decades, I quietly yet credibly built a reputation for supreme service in staffing, training and development, and people solutions. My ability to identify, prepare and help retain talent – at all levels – has been an asset to my career, mainly because I have a knack for understanding people and meeting them where they are. Clients have grown to appreciate that about me and the unwavering level of quality service my organization provides. So when I decided to expand my company’s suite of services with the launch of a new brand, Union Blu, it was not without much consideration, prayer, and quite frankly, harsh warnings from many inside and outside the construction field. I heard everything from “this is a tough industry” to “this is a tough industry for women – especially women of color.” To say the chips were feeling stacked against me would be an understatement. Still, after years of successfully navigating life as a savvy mompreneur, I took the plunge into the construction industry. And guess what? I quickly found the words of James Brown to be true. This IS a man’s world. But, it is time more diversity, women and those with a broad spectrum of experience to bring new energy and fresh processes /procedures to the table. And, timing is everything! With this in mind, I would like to share three tips that have been useful as Union Blu has navigated the world of construction:
1. Leave no stone unturned. Although we are a minority, woman-owned business, it was important to me to take every step that would give us an advantage and professional standard of excellence in a new field. We respond to every email, pursue every lead, and took the necessary steps to become DBE/MBE/WBE certified. No matter what your industry or passion, making keen investments and seeking beneficial resources creates building blocks for a strong, profitable and fulfilling outcome.
“This is a man’s world, but it would be nothing without a woman or a girl.” 2. When the chips are stacked against you, buy a bull dozer. So many people warned me against entering into the construction space. And I must admit, there were days I was ready to quit and return to my peaceful business life as I’ve known it. But, if going to the next level was easy then everyone would be doing it. When circumstances arise that seem as if we can’t get through them, I encourage my team to find ways to either go around them or knock them down. There is always, always, always a way. We just have to keep our heels cool and keep an open, creative frame of mind. 3. Keep your windows clean so you can maintain a clear view.
Construction is a fast-paced field, yet accuracy is imperative. It’s easy to get so caught in the weeds of bidding, working and doing, that we forget to stay centered in why we are in it in the first place. My educational, personal and professional experience has taught me that this is true of just about everything. That is why I have the daily practice of perspective – taking 10 minutes to step away from the phone, email and any other form of communication to simply be. It is amazing how a brief amount of time with no agenda can bring a clear point of view. Try it. I think you might find it helpful, too. Union Blu provides beautification, restoration and other resources for commercial and residential properties. We have the capability to service both union and nonunion jobs. Having the right partnerships, or as we like to say, forging the perfect unions, has been my mission from day one. I have been fortunate enough to have insight, guidance and support from good mentors and the confidence of some largescale organizations that were open to partnering with a smaller, start-up firm. With my background in staffing, training and development, a Master’s degree (with plenty of dust on it), a large family, and the vision to build generational wealth rooted in education, dreams, love and excellence, I am relentlessly committed to bringing joy and positivity to everything I do – construction is no exception. So yes, this is a man’s world, but it is better (in my humble opinion) with this woman on board.

Holiday Glam By Brenita
Tis the season with holiday cheer! From cherry reds to soft pastel powder pinks. This winter’s makeup looks are focused on soft neutral eyes with rich chocolate browns and deep plums. One of my favorite eye palettes for this winters’ sweater weather is MAC cosmetics, “Shiny Pretty Things” and “Goody Bag Neutral Eye” kit. It includes a neutral eye palette that can be worn from Day to Night, a full-size Extreme Dimension” mascara that will curl and add volume to your lashes. Be sure to apply B’Adored Mink Lashes in the style “Adore” right before applying the mascara, and follow up it up with the full size “Technakohl” liner in an alluring brown shade. This is a combination that will make any eye color pop! Finish the look with Mac matte “Ruby Woo” lipstick and lipliner, with “Ruby Woo” lip glass for the ultimate red lip this season! 18

TO THE MOTHERLESS MOM DURING THE HOLIDAYS
T
he holidays are such an emotional time filled with love, laughter, and celebration that we often forget about those dealing with the transition of celebrating without the presence of a loved one. Nikki from Besties and Brunch, a blog created by best friends who are dedicated to sharing sincerity through their life stories and sisterhood, shares how she has dealt with the absence of a family member and the steps that have helped her cope. The holidays are filled with so much love, joy, laughter, and the creation of memories, that it can often be hard to realize that some of your closest loved ones may be suffering in silence. I love the holidays. Yet, I also know they can stir up emotions 32

for me if I am not intentional about my spirit. I am a mother without parents, but I find it harder to be a mother without a mom. Not that my dad didn’t have an impact on my life; he absolutely did. But there is nothing like the bond one
shares with their mom after birthing children of their own. To the motherless moms – here is how I manage to navigate the holidays and the collection of feelings they may bring to my doorstep as I work to be a thoughtful mom to my children.
M
Acknowledge Your Emotions. I used to try to mask my grief to make others comfortable while making myself uncomfortable. Now, I talk to those who love and care for me in order to release those thoughts. I have found that once I let that energy go, I no longer feel guilty for being happy in the absence of her. Let the Guilt Go. My first point leads into this one. Sometimes happiness feels like a betrayal to your deceased loved ones, but it is not. It is a reflection of the love you have for them and the love they had for you. Don’t stay in the darkness when the sky is blue. Guilt can hang on to you like
an old frumpy sweater. Take that damn sweater off and honor your loved ones by living a life they would be proud of and elated to see. Say Their Names. This one is by far the hardest one for me. I talk to my husband about my mom and few others who create spaces for me to feel safe as I share my feelings. By saying “mom” it allows me to speak about the memories with a smile. Before I found comfort in saying her name, I often ended up on the other end of tears whenever I mentioned her. I had not figured out to remove the guilt from the pain or how to remove the pain from the memories until I recognized the joy in

those memories. Saying her name now comes with a few laughs and quick look up to the sky. If you are a friend of someone who has lost a loved one, check in on them. They may not say much, but your love will be felt and appreciated. To the motherless moms during the holidays – keep being awesome and find your way to happiness. Your kids need you happy. And more importantly, you need you happy!

Alderman Jason Ervin 34
Community SPOTLIGHT
Our Winter Issue Community Spotlight is on the 28th Ward Alderman Jason Ervin Q: Do you have any holiday traditions you are looking forward to?
A: Thanksgiving is always one of my favorite holidays. Ever since I started working, I have always taken the week of Thanksgiving off so that I can spend time with my family. It will be interesting this year because it will be the first year without my father, but life goes on (smiling). Q: What are some of your favorite hobbies? A: I like to watch movies -comedies specifically because I deal with so much drama. Really my hobbies are changing as my daughter is getting older. So whatever she likes I have to like. Q: How has being the Alderman of the 28th Ward shaped your life? A: It has brought a lot of things into perspective. I have lived in this community for the past 20 years, I’ve seen its ups and I’ve seen its downs and I think that we are moving and trend

ing in an upward direction. So I view the role as trying to help those that in most cases can’t help themselves but also those that need a little assistance to move up to the next level.
“My major goal in 2019 is to be re-elected”
Q: What is one of your favorite quotes? A: Philippians 4:13 “ I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength.” I firmly believe that there are no limits once we put our mind to it. Q: If you could have dinner with anyone past or present, who would it be and why? A: I would say Dr. Martin Luther King, Why, because of his perseverance as he went through so many trials and how he was able to overcome. The second person would be my grandmother. My grandmother died when I was 21 years old and I loved her dearly. And just to say “Hey how are you doing” would be nice. Q: Do you have any new goals for the upcoming year? A: YES! Goal number one is to get re-elected. Goal number two is to really work towards what I would consider to be things that are going to stand the test of time. Be it legislation, be it capital improvements, or marks that can be made for the community that would perpetuate positivity. 36
Q: What has been the most successful part of being the 28th Ward Alderman? A: I think that the improvements that we have made in the community, the work we have done in the schools, the two new libraries that are in our community and new sports facility.

I
’m David, 39 years old, and from the inner city of Chicago. In my early years I made a lot of life challenging mistakes, which led me to have to pay my debt to society. However, I am proud to say that portion of my life is in the past and I am on a new journey of positive actions.
46
I heard about Communities Empowered Through Construction’s program and decided to complete the information that was required. After successfully completing CEC’s process I was able to obtain job placement doing landscaping for Atrium Landscaping Company of Chicago. Since then, I have gained a lot of experience working with Artium and am truly grateful to Communities Empowered Through Construction for giving me a new outlook on life. 47

IMESHA JOHNSON Growing up in Cabrini Green and raising two kids as a single parent, I have always wanted more for myself. I have had many jobs in different fields because I was always striving for something better. While attending a job fair I met Lafrancis Ivy and she encouraged me to go through a 16-week paid construction program with Dawson Tech. She made me believe I had a place in this field because I had a CDL. During the 16 week course at Dawson Tech, I learned basic carpentry and welding. I

enjoyed doing what I was learning so I started taking it more serious. I started networking with different people that were already in the construction industry and became a member of Chicago Women In Trades. These sisters encouraged me. I was elated to see so many women in the different trades, that have been in the business for years making good money. I say thank you to all those who have helped me on my journey to becoming a proud member of Plumbers Local 130.

Addressing the financial experiences of business owners and working population
Helping you achieve the best lending experience Have you ever asked yourself; Why is it so hard for me to establish credit? I don’t understand why I am being denied? If you ask me, I would tell you that finance has a terminology of its’ own. It is much like medical terminology, it is very difficult to understand your diagnosis if the doctor just speaks to you like you are a doctor. As a banker for the last 20 years, I’ve taken great pride in being able to communicate with the public in a way that breaks the terminology barrier. For example, when a client is applying for credit, I have a real cash-flow conversation based around 3 principals; how money comes in, how money is stored, and how money goes out. The discussion is transparent so the client can understand how lending works; I make a simple comparison of borrowing money from a friend. Who would lend money to someone who doesn’t have the means to pay it back; that’s a gift. I always educate clients on the lending industry rules and many of its practices. For example, you can’t leverage income that’s not shown on tax your returns. I also educate my clients about proper positioning to ensure better outcomes. It is very important 54
to understand that the best time to think about a loan is not when the finances are running low; but when financial performance is doing well. I know that seems weird but the truth is the banks are in business to ensure they make money, therefore ensuring proper financial stability is imperative for a successful lending experience. One must understand that their personal credit is always used to adjudicate any small business/ personal credit deal. There are many misunderstandings about the business credit being totally separate from personal credit. Truth is business and personal credit are separate, however when it comes to adjudicating new credit both business and personal credit is taken into consideration. Let’s talk about credit, leverage and exposure… Credit (how do you manage access to money)-Do you use it all or can you sustain yourself on minimal utilization (30%)? Think about it, do you spend on every card you have and just make the minimal payment? If so, you are telling a lender that you just can’t manage how you spend money, therefore whatever they lend you will be at risk of mis-management
and
high
default
potential.
Exposure- How many tradelines do you need? How many companies do you want to pay per month? Too many tradelines with high usage makes you look like a serial spender. It gives the appearance that a person is living above their financial capabilities, therefore high risk for credit default. The point of the story is your financial experience is created by the level of transparency, communication and understanding between you the client and the banker. When your banker is willing to educate you about how the process works and truly seek to serve you/your business you will find your experience to be pleasing. Even if you are declined, you will have begun the process of working towards an approval in the future. As a consumer we can all agree that knowledge is power. Therefore, I challenge everyone who has read this article to spend time reading about the financial industry and the workings of a successful bank/client relationship; I promise you will find yourself with a positive financial outcome.

Savory Seafood Cheesecake
Disclaimer: DO NOT make this dish unless you are prepared to be the talk of the party, it really is just that good! Also, don’t be intimidated by the list of ingredients. All of the left over produce would be amazing in your next winter soup!
INGREDIENTS Crust • 2 sleeves of Ritz crackers, finely crumbled • 8oz of pecans, finely crumbled • 3 oz of grated parmesan cheese • 1 stick of butter, melted Filling • 32 oz of cream cheese • 4 eggs • 1 lemon • 1 stick of unsalted butter • ½ of green bell pepper, chopped finely • ½ of red bell pepper, chopped finely • ½ of yellow onion, chopped finely • 2 stalks of celery, chopped finely • 2 jalapeno peppers, chopped finely (seeds can be removed to reduce spice level) • 5 stalks of green onion, chopped (include white bulbs) • 2 raw lobster tails, removed from shell and chopped into bite-size pieces • 1lb of peeled and deveined shrimp, chopped • 1 Tbs of Cajun or Creole Seasoning • ½ Tbs of Seafood Seasoning (such as Old Bay) • 1 Tbs of minced garlic • 1/2 Tbs of ground black pepper • 1 tsp of smoked paprika • ½ can of condensed cream of mushroom soup • ½ bunch of parsley, chopped • 8-10 basil leaves, chopped 58
COOKING INSTRUCTIONS
Garnish(s)- Completely Optional •
Jumbo prawns
•
Crab fingers or claws
•
Microgreens
•
Blistered tomatoes
Making the Crust 1. Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees 2. Mix the cracker crumbs, pecan and cheese in mixing bowl; add butter 3. Press mixture into a 10” spring form pan 4. Line outside of pan with aluminum foil and bake for 10 minutes. Remove pan from oven, but do not remove the foil from the pan. You’ll learn why soon! Leave oven on as our pan will return to the oven with the cheesecake mixture! Preparing the Cheesecake Mixture 1. Add the cream cheese to the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment and mix
at low to medium speed to soften. Add ½ of chopped parsley, ½ of green onions, grated parmesan, basil leaves and the zest and juice of 1 lemon. . 2. While cream cheese is softening in mixer, take out a large sauté pan or skillet. Add stick of unsalted butter. Once melted, add all dry seasonings and the remainder of all chopped veggies to the pan and cook until onions are translucent. Add dry seasonings and soup and chopped seafood to pan with veggies and allow to cook for additional 3-5 minutes. When you remove your sauté pan from the burner, your seafood will not be cook thoroughly as it will continue to cook in the oven. 3. Once your veggie/ seafood mixture is complete and cooling, add eggs one by one to the mixing bowl with the cream cheese mixture until all eggs are incorporated into the batter. 4. Using a spatula, gently fold the ingredients of the saucepan into the mixing bowl with cream cheese mixture so all ingredients are incorporated. Touchdown Territory 1. Pour the mixture from the mixing bowl into the spring form pan, over the crust. 2. Set wrapped pan in a large roasting pan, and pour hot water into roasting pan—to a depth of 2 inches or about halfway up the sides of cheesecake pan. This why we kept the foil on our springform. We wouldn’t want water seeping into our pan. 3. While cheesecake is baking, pop open a bottle of Prosecco (glass is optional) and have some fun with making garnishes for your delectable dish! Suggested items include sautéed prawns or crab claws, chives, microgreens, edible flowers- remember you want an instagramable dish! 4. Bake until the cheesecake is set, about 2 hours .Cheesecake should feel firm when touched. 5. Run small sharp knife around pan sides to loosen cheesecake. Release pan sides. Transfer cheesecake to platter. Serve at room temperature or serve cold after refrigerating overnight on a tray with your favorite cracker or fried wonton chips.
Who We Are:
Team Nola Nights
Healthcare administration and employment law are our trade, but cooking is our passion! This dynamic duo was formed by two college roommates who both professed their love for southern food. Joelle Brown is a Louisiana native who recently relocated to Chicago. Joelle inherited her culinary skills from her grandmother, aka “Momma T”, and began cooking at the age of 12. Nariea Nelson is a St. Louis native who developed an interest in southern cuisine while spending 4 years below the Mason Dixie for college. Known for her mean chopping skills, creativity and ability to perform well under pressure, it was quickly recognized that Nariea would be perfect for the “sous
