ommunities Empowered Through Construction is Proud to launch B/ACE! A quarterly magazine designed to capture the essence of the everyday in construction and make it extraordinary. CEC strives to be a resource in
the community and B/ACE is the vehicle to showcase all the work that is being done. Our candidates have worked on many of the luxury rental properties, hotels, stadiums, and community centers located all over the city. B/ACE aims to share their stores and projects, while engaging and empowering our community in an unconventional manner! Think Glamour, GQ Magazine meets Construction.
“This season is my favorite time of the year! The holidays, the shopping, spending time with family, and most importantly a time to reflect on the year in anticipation of the New. Launching B/ACE in December is perfectly aligned with so many of my favorite things! Additionally, it’s a creative reflection of many of the projects and our people who have played a key role in changing Chicago’s landscape. It is the great job that our candidates do all year long and the commitments that both the general contractors, elected officials, developers, and candidates share that have made CEC a key player in Chicago’s construction industry. I hope you will enjoy reading B/ACE as much as we have enjoyed sharing some of our favorite gift ideas, projects, financial tips, and a host of other goodies! On behalf of the CEC Team and B/ACE Family, we are wishing you and yours a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!”

Projects on the Horizon “Chicago is booming with new and exciting Construction projects! The West loop is getting a new hip hotel and a new office building. On the west side of the city, the Mayor is ecstatic about the Hatchery which boasts a state-of-the-art culinary incubator and features spaces for coworking, mentoring programs, events, and an expanded Garfield Park Neighborhood Market. North of the city, the long-awaited Lathrop Homes is changing the game with their mixed income model of development along the Chicago River. With so many exciting buildings, it’s no surprise that these projects are on our horizon.”

EMPOWERING Your Career by Yeneba Smith
I
have the privilege of working with people from various backgrounds and career
interests. As a Career Transition Coach and Resume Writer, one of the most inspiring aspects of my job is helping people pursue the career or job of their dreams. One client in particular who I often refer to as a success story is Elle C.* When she first came to me for help with her resume, she wasn’t really sure what area she wanted to pursue. After asking her some questions to learn more about her and her career goals, she realized she needed time to really gather her thoughts and promised she would get back to me. Within a few weeks she returned focused and ready.

but had been laid off recently. On the side, she had a t-shirt business that she had been running for several years and volunteered in the media department at her church. With so many varied experiences, there was no surprise as to why she was unsure of her career goals. She was good at so many things but having to choose one area required some self-reflection.
However, after focusing on her transferable skills, strengths, and abilities in her new resume, she gained confidence to articulate her skills and pursue her dreams. Within a couple of months, Elle C. was hired as a Field Tech for Wrigley Field in Chicago and 6 months later promoted as a Client Service Rep for the Astros in Houston.

Faces of B/ACE At the heart of B/ACE is the community. Someone asked me a few weeks ago to define community. I defined ours as minority men and women from underserved and under employed neighborhoods all over the city of Chicago who’ve chosen a career in construction. Each quarter the Faces of B/ACE aims to shine a spotlight on our CEC (Communities Empowered Through Construction) candidates that are out in the field, showing up to work on time, drug free and making their community proud.

Darryl Campbell “I am a proud Carpenter with Kole Construction and also a second year apprentice and it all started the day I went to Cook County Central Health Campus intake conference held by CEC. After being selected, I went through CEC’s hiring process and they were very helpful with making me “job-ready”. CEC helped me build my resume, provided interviewing tips, and encouragement as I prepared for the multiple interviews I had in construction. I would like to thank CEC for helping me start this wonderful career, as well as for furthering my education in the demanding trade. This is only the beginning, thanks CEC.”

Tawanda Washington “I first heard about Communities Empowered through Construction (CEC) by a friend. I decided to followup on the information with hopes that I can continue my work experience in construction. In March of 2016, I received a call from CEC inviting me to attend the Blackhawks Project Intake Conference. I was excited about the opportunity and knew that I would have to work hard to prove myself in this industry. After attending the intake conference for McHugh’s Blackhawks Project, I had the opportunity to demonstrate my dedication and hard work. I was later hired permanently by McHugh Construction where I’m currently employed.”

Rocky Faulkner “My name is Rocky Faulkner. I grew up in the Englewood and 55th area. During my lifetime, I struggled with trying to stay on the right path and often times I went astray by following the actions of gang banging. I was in and out of jail since I was 15 years old. In 2012, I had a near death experience which really opened my eyes. I knew I needed to make a change in my lifestyle. A year ago, I found out about CEC. When I showed my interest, they took me in with open arms. CEC motivated me to want better and to do better along with guiding me in the right direction. Since I’ve been connected with CEC, I am currently a Union Trainee with Local 134 and on my way to becoming an Electrical Apprentice. I also aspire to be a General Foreman as my journey continues. CEC is one of the reasons I haven’t gone back to my old lifestyle and has given me the encouragement to believe that I’m worth more.”

Shaquita White “My first time learning about CEC was at their Lathrop Homes Intake Conference. After the conference, I was contacted by CEC for an interview and the organization was very helpful with my entire process. CEC helped me with my resume and found two opportunities for me. A 3 year apprenticeship with All Tech Decorating and Atrium, a company that specializes in landscaping. I chose landscaping and I’m glad I did. I love my job and appreciate everything CEC has done to help me get a good job.”

CONSTRUCTING A PLAN TO WIN: by Rashada Whitehead
Last year, I wrote an article for Thrive Global on Kicking the Bucket List. It was inspired by a creativity session I attended for Chicago Ideas Week where entrepreneur Jesse Itzler spoke. He opened his session saying this, “forget your bucket list and start living your *^ck it list. On one level, there is a lot happening around the country and the world that supports a sense of anxiety and the notion that people are disconnected and at odds. On the other hand, there is an opportunity for positivity to prevail in the lives of every day people and organizations everywhere because of the desire to thrive and affect purposeful

CLAYCO’S RISING STAR What would you tell your 20-year-old self as it relates to your career? Learn as much as you can about the construction industry and network as much as you can. So much of the construction industry is about doing business with the people that know and like you. I’ve always focused on my ability to be productive and solve problems, not building and fostering relationships. Getting out and meeting interesting people is just as important as your ability to perform the work. Actionable notes that you would give to established or perspective subcontractors who are in the construction industry. People like me are always looking for good subcontractors to work with. A good subcontractor to me is collaborative and agile. My goal at the end of the day is to deliver the best possible product to my clients on time and to help them achieve their goals. That can only happen by working with a team of good subcontractors. I expect my team to do everything they can to deliver for Clayco and in turn I will do everything I can to make sure they are appropriately compensated for it. As a company, I have always appreciated the value Clayco has for its subcontractors and community. We believe in doing the right thing. I think selecting the right companies to work with is one of the most important ways to be successful. A fun fact about yourself. I am extremely shy. I find it funny for someone in my position but it takes a lot for me to overcome it in social situations. That’s the engineer side of me I guess. One of your favorite quotes or book recommendations. Good to Great by Jim Collins Winning by Jack Welch Both of these books describe excellent business practices. The most important thing I took away from them is to surround yourself with the best team possible and get the wrong people off your team as quickly as possible.
