Rachel’s Editorial As I write this article it is a beautiful sunny day. I was so tempted to skip work altogether but I was then reminded of my to do list and opted for a 5 min outdoor coffee break at my favorite coffee shop. The sun made me smile and filled me with anticipation for the summer to come. The end of school, all white parties, backyard boogies with the family and just lazy Sunday afternoons. I have vowed to keep my to do list simple so that I can enjoy more of the great outdoors.

This month the Faces of B/ACE embraced the outdoors and had a ball outside in the beautiful weather. Codaro Brooks a 2nd year Apprentice for Alltech Decorating and Rashard Allen a 2nd Year Apprentice Carpenter, brought the heat this month. Can you say sizzling?!
Also take a look at some of the hottest haircuts for men this season done by some of the community coldest barbers on the Westside. With Fathers Day coming we also came up with some great gift ideas. I know my father in law is over the ties and my dad probably can’t take another Home Depot gift card…. Lastly we added a community spotlight to highlight community advocates, elected officials and other community organizations that are working daily to better the communities they serve. Nothing makes you feel more confident than when you look good and for many of us, it starts with the hair! Our highlighted barber of the month is Mr. Frank Williams who has been a longterm resident and businessman in the 27th Ward Community. He donates his time as a barber at the 27th Ward Back to School Picnic, where he can be found giving FREE haircuts to kids before they start school. Like so many of us, Mr. Frank understands that when you look good, you tend to feel good. Kudos…. Mr. Williams for getting our kids “Right” for school!

Community Spotlight This month’s Community Spotlight is on Alderman Walter Burnett, Jr. For the last 20 plus years, Walter Burnett Jr. has been serving the residents and businesses of the 27th Ward. As one of the longest serving African American Aldermen in Chicago’s City Council, he has been a Champion for Change in his community. His ability to bring all constituents to the table including, residents, developers, businesses and community organizations has proven profitable. His ward currently has one of the city’s biggest development boom in history and he is making sure that his residents benefit and not just developers.

Assistant Project Manager 12 years ago after many unsuccessful attempts to establish myself in the construction industry I decided to stop trying and I looked for new opportunities of work in many different fields which included becoming a hair stylist, a tax return preparer, and a medical records clerk. While working as a medical records clerk, I realized my goals and passion was still in the construction industry so I started researching opportunities to follow my passion I found out about the IDOT TCART program where individuals are enrolled in a preapprenticeship program in the trades while doing course work and training with the Chicagoland Laborers and Local 150. After successfully completing the 12 week program I unfortunately hit a brick wall again and was struggling to find a job opportunity in the construction industry.

I did not come from meager beginnings as my father was an electrical engineer and mother was a registered nurse. Their hard work, commitment and focus on family was taught as a staple of my upbringing, so let’s just say this is in my blood. Many family members were in the trades and have told the stories of how hard it is to get in. As I struggled to find employment, I used my family’s upbringing to keep me motivated and focused on my goals and what my life desperately missed, a career in the trades. 6 months after completing the 12 week program, a friend, Lamont W., got me in contact with Rachel Ivy. Rachel and her team wanted to know me as a person and wanted to know my needs and what my goals were. I was then invited to attended several intake conferences where I met the powerhouse contractors in the industry. I also met Mr. Mark Goeden from Related Midwest. After

several interviews with the various members of the Related team , I was offered full time employment as a Construction Administrative Assistant. The most important part of my experience (using a football analogy) is that when it was fourth down I refused to give up and punt which is a risk considering where I was on the field. I understood that my goals required that I hit the ground running fast to keep moving forward. So I pushed ahead and I can proudly say that since I have been at Related, I have been a fulltime employee for over two years and most recently, I was promoted into a new position. Iit is all because I understood my goals and what it took for me to achieve them. I will run the ball as their newest Assistant Project Manager and will get the next TD.

Out & About B/ACE was busy this past quarter! We started the quarter off by celebrating
Alderman Walter Burnett Fundrais
with two of our favorite construction organizations, HACIA and AACA. These award banquets are always so much fun. Two of my professional colleagues received awards from the African American Contractors Association, Mark Goeden of Related Midwest and Charles Wilson of Unity Fencing. Congratulations guys!
