Not only that, this island is suppose to be the place for research and science, like the law said on SK.GB No. 46 Stbl. 1928 No. 69 year 1928. Even before Indonesia reached its independence, this island had already received its acknowledgment for its nature beauty. But it’s better for us to manage permission letter first to enter conservation area (SIMAKSI) of Sempu Island. This SIMAKSI can be perceived in three places, which are: 1. Jl. Bandara Juanda, Surabaya. 2. Bidang KSDA Wilayah III, on Jl. Jawa No. 36, Jember.

SENDANG BIRU, THE NEAREST BEACH TO SEMPU ISLAND, BUT THE FUNCTION IS FOR SECURITY POST ONLY, SO WE CAN’T GET THE PERMISSION LETTER THERE 3. Seksi Konservasi Wilayah VI, on Jl. Mastrip No. 88, Probolinggo. There is a Conservation Resort of Sempu Island area in Sendang Biru, the nearest beach to Sempu Island, but the function is for security post only, so we can’t get the permission letter there. However, before we cross to Sempu Island, we need to report ourselves along with the SIMAKSI letter to this post.

ON THE SPOT AND THE JOURNEY GOES… Sempu Island is located in Malang Regency, precisely on Dusun Sendang Biru, Desa Tambakrejo, Kecamatan Sumbar Manjing Wetan. The easiest way to reach here is through Malang – Turen – Sendang Biru – Sempu track. Public transportation is available from Malang to Sendang Biru. Arriving at Sendang Biru, there are a lot of fishermen boats that are ready to be rented and carry us to Sempu Island. We are just going to sit for a while because we will be told to jump down the boat, approximately 50 meters from Semut Bay, west of Sempu Island. Boats cannot moor so we need to get ourselves into the water, as high as our waist (according to our heights of course). Then we’ll arrive on Sempu Island!

Sempu Island has four ecosystems on it; mangrove forest, beach forest, lakes and lowland tropical forest, plus with around 223 kinds of plants and 51 animals. Some of it are Javanese eagle, hawksbill turtle, black ape, forest pig, leopard, all gathered here. When we arrive in the edge of Sempu Island’s beach, the forest ecosystems are sweetly lined in front us. If only they could move like human, they would probably dance to welcome us.
HEADING TO SEGARA ANAKAN Segara Anakan Lake is one of the most must-see places to visit. It is indeed a popular lake. There are two more places
which have the same name; Segara Anakan in Cilacap (Nusa Kambangan) and Segara Anak in the area of Mount Rinjani, Lombok. Some people said that Segara Anakan in Sempu Island is as beautiful as, even more beautiful than Phi Phi Island in Thailand, the place where Leonardo Dicaprio took scene for the movie The Beach. Whatever people said, this place is definitely a true beauty. However, the road to get there is no beauty! From the edge of the beach until in the middle of the road, floods are everywhere. Prepare to buy a new sandal when you return home. If the weather’s bad, it is very rare to have nice comfortable sandals J U LY- a U G U S T 2 0 1 1

in the end, even the expensive ones. Using shoes are better but it will turn to brownish also, so be prepared to clean it afterwards. The trekking is clear anyway, so arrange neatly when you want to visit here. If the weather’s good, the road will be not too hard. The most important thing when you want to go here is bring a lot of water, moreover if you want to camp here, because Segara Anakan Lake is not a freshwater lake. Normally, in an hour or more we will arrive at Segara Anakan Lake. Once we got here, we would generally have light amnesia; forgetting the long exhausted road we just been. Feeling tired? Already forgotten!

If you couldn’t imagine yet how beautiful Segara Anakan Lake is, let me help you visualized. Imagine that there’s a quiet rush of water, surrounded by high rocks that is full of trees, and in front of you there’s a hole which the water comes through from the sea. The place you stand is a beautiful clean white sand. That is Segara Anakan looks like! This salt lake was formed from the circling rocks. The water from the sea that rushes to it through the hole (Karang Bolong), stuck in the circle of rocks that made lake with calm water.

TURN A BIT LEFT from Segara Anakan and climb the rocks, then you’ll see the fierce waves of the Indian Ocean. This is the twin beach. Let’s enjoy it for a moment while closing our eyes and opening our arms. Let the wind messed up our hair.
But don’t go asleep. Sempu is still
wide enough to be explored, my friend! Keep on going along. After the Twin Beach, go trekking for awhile and we’ll arrive at Pasir Panjang Beach. This beach is wide and sometimes people choose to build tent here beside Segara Anakan.
Not satisfied enough? Sempu also
has, at least, 2 caves; Air Tawar Cave and Macan Cave, but those places are rarely

We used Matarmaja to go there. In Malang, we visited my relative. Their house is in Dinoyo. In this place, we heard about Sempu from my aunty. “He just came back from Sempu”, while pointing at my cousin. “The place is good. It’s in the South, near from here. Just just have to go down there” Sempu Island is actually a conservation, Indonesian Army has their practice there. Whoa, I never knew about that kind of place. From his story, it seemed so easy to reach Sempu. Okay, we think it’s okay if we go there. After went to Bromo, we rode a bus to Sendang Biru. Before went there, we asked the bus assistant if the bus is going through Sendang Biru. “Ah, yes. Come in!”, he said. Few hours later, we were come off the bus. The bus conductor said that we just had to walk through the street to reach Sendang Biru. However, after we walked for a long time, there was no Sendang Biru sign in that place. We felt something was wrong, until we met a personel of Koramil (like a military personnel), then we asked him where we were. “Sir, we want to go to Sendang Biru (pointing at the map).” “This is the location of Banyu Biru.” “Hah?! This one, sir. Sendang Biru on the South.” “Hm, now you’re on the North, kid (pointing at the map).” Whoa this is insane! We took the wrong way since the beginning!

Finally, we had to took some buses, and it was getting dark. Then we rode the open-carrier car, and we sat in the back together with some motorcycles. One of the man started a conversation, his name is Slamet. “Where are you going?” he asked. “Sendang Biru, sir”, we replied. Then he responded, “Hmm, you better stay in my house tonight.” Then we ate dinner with him before go to his house. His house was located in near Turen market. We woke up early in the morning. After had some conversations with Slamet, we left his house and went to Sendang Biru. We arrived at 2pm. While asking some info about the boat to across and the other stuffs,

there was a person shouted, “If you want to cross and go to Sempu, you have to ask the Forest Service’s permission!” We just thought, “What the...” Then we went to the security office. There, the officer asked many questions to us. The person was nice, he said that in 2008, Sempu was still a quiet place. It just became popular nowadays. Because Sempu is a conservatory, if we want to go there we had to have the letter of permission. There are a lot of wild animals, tigers and crocodiles for example. The local people helped us to find fisherman that wanted to take us to Sempu. We had to swim little bit to reach the shore after we arrived. There was a big sign ‘Sempu Island Conservatory’. The fisherman said that we only had to walk straight. Alright then, let’s start the journey!

We met many unique animals. First, Alfi saw a big bird flew above us. Next, when we went further, Khemal saw a big black monkey. I also saw rangkok and Javanese eagle. At that time we didn’t talk much about it and just keep walking. We heard unusual sounds when we were walking inside. “Oaaakkk.. Oaaakkkk..” It was quite loud and seemed like near us. We had no idea what the sound was; either it was a monkey, or bird, or something else. I had a bad feeling, so we walked slowly. I wanted to know where the sound came from. time I heard a sound again, but now it was more scary than before. “Rrrrrrrr......” I made no noise at all. Then the voices came again, “Oaaaakkk.. Oaaakkkkkk..” followed by “Rrrrrr.....” Suddenly Alfi whispered, “Gham! Gham! It’s a tiger!”. Khemal suddenly became very pale. Me and Akbar shocked. Without any thought, we stepped backward. I said to my friends don’t run, but the “Rrrrr...” voice was still there. We tried to leave that place, and finally those voices were gone. We walked to the beach where we first started to explore this island. We met 3 men who brought sick23

les. We felt relieved because we met people that have gun with them. We had nothing to protect ourselves beside cameras and tripod. Alfi and Khemal told them about what we saw earlier. One of those men slightly answered, “Ah, tiger? Where? Ah, it’s okay. This is their home, I think they just want to find food.” Those men were the local people of Sendang Biru. They walked to find firewoods. They had never seen tiger before, but they knew there are a lot of tigers in Sempu. We decided to walk inside again, together with those men. It felt save when we walked together. Before arrived in Segara

Anakan, they walked separately from us. And the 4 of us walked again. We kept walking until we saw a lake in front of us. We walked faster, and we stepped on white sand. Here we are, Segara Anakan! After we played, took some pictures, then we went to the hill and saw the Indian Ocean. We were so happy! Finally we could reach this place after so many unpredictable events. We stayed there for couple of hours, but we decided to come back to the beach because we were already promised the fishermen that will bring us back. Thank God, there was nothing scary when we went back to the beach.
No longer after we arrived at the beach, the fisherman’s boat came. When we arrived at Sendang Biru, we told everything to the forest officer, including our experience seeing a tiger. Guess what, they were just laughed. They didn’t know our feelings, seems like death was close with us. Huuft.. There was our story in Sempu. And I have a quote that reflect our unforgetable trip, ‘It’s not about the destination, it’s about the journey!’ Our journey was more remarkable than the destination.

LOCAL CULTURE NOT ONLY THE MOVEMENT, but also Indonesian dances have a lot of stories about the values of life. Based on agrarian culture, Indonesian clans have done many ideas of dancing, like other arts, comunally, for entertainment needs, traditional ceremony, or socio-cultural activities. In life arrangement, the feeling of togetherness becomes the central point of a value of dance. There are many parties that involve dancing surrounding us, and in the whole world in many kinds of events – traditional or modern nuance. Just like Minangkabau’s custom, alek nagari (village party), the coronation of the village chief, wedding and many more, always involve dancing. Another example in Batak, North Sumatera’s custom, almost all of the events involve dancing (general term, tortor). Even in Southeast Sulawesi, for example in Kalesusu Village, Buton, dance

acompanies the people in almost every activity, starts when people are still in their mother’s womb until they die, therefore many people from other clans name them dancers clan. Whereas in Bali, it is very obvious that dance does not only come in all of the events, it also becomes a part of life, so does in other regions, such as Sumba, Timor, Sulawesi, Kalimantan, Papua, Jawa, etc. Dance can also come in social events, not only for stage performance. Dance can also become the symbol of cultural expression because of its realization involves many participants. Therefore, cultural values, that are had by the people where the dances come from, will be pre-
sented in each dance. Dance can be said as the realization of cultural expression, including the varieties of ethnicity that are in its social scope. For instance, Tortor dance Batak Toba in Silaen, North Tapanuli, North Sumatera, in ‘Parmalim’ ceremony shows that dancing can be personal, cultural, and spiritual expression. The function of dancing, especially group dance, is generally for spiritual, social, and cultural needs. Not only it is a ceremony, but it is also as an entertainment. It may happens because there is a movement in the function of dancing. Another example in Java, in tayuban, Ronggeng (female dancer) generally J U LY- a U G U S T 2 0 1 1

LOCAL CULTURE becomes the target of entertainment for males. There many regions which have this kind of Javanese Dance, such as in Bali, this dance is called as Joged Bumbung; Bugis also have that kind of dance which is called as Pojoge (danced by females) and Pojoge Angkong (danced by females and shemales); Melayu societies have Ronggeng Melayu, whereas Betawi has Cokek, and so on. In Indonesia, it is felt that there is something that color the lifestyle of Indonesian majority. The sucessful of agriculture in harvest time or the sucessful of the sailors in the ocean are the happiest moment. Many people show their gratefulness and happiness in doing dancing performance, or other kinds of arts. In this kinds of events, a person or a group of people communicate to other human beings, ancestors, or God. Dancings with all of its tradition are the symbol of people’s expression to be grateful for God’s grace. Therefore, dance is not only for entertainment. It has the values of life. Hopefully, as Indonesian people, we can conserve traditional dancing as one of the arts and as a part of local wisdom that needs to be studied for a better life. Cheers!

LATHIFUL AMRI, THE CHIEF of the community told the story of how the name derived: “It was the time when we just got back from Baduy. While we were hanging out, we thought about making a traveling community. Then out of sudden, an odongodong (a small version of merry-go-round run manually by a man paddling) came up on the street. One of us said, ‘why don’t we name ourselves odong-odong! Like you guys, odong (slow, sometimes stupid -red), hahaha’” The statement became serious. After deep thought, odong-odong had the same value and characteristic with the community. It was official that on June 11, 2010 OdongOdong Traveler born. Like common backpackers community, when there is a trip, the rule of cost, fun and pain sharing are always there. Together 37

came more solid, knew each other very well and learned to survive on difficult situations which could happen everytime. No wonder traveling with them is always addictive. Every time a trip is open, there are always a number of people who wants to join them. However, they made limitations for the number of people. “If there are too many people, it will be troublesome. We won’t enjoy it,” said Amri. The membership system is open; everyone is welcome if they are willing to mingle and share the good and the bad of the journey together. Until now, the number of member in Facebook has reached 600 people and the active ones are about 120 people, well spread in East java, Kalimantan, even Lombok.

The itinerary was far away from reality; the travel went very late, arrived at Sendang Biru too late, the field to Sempu Island was very slippery that injured some people, which made the plan to explore other spots of Sempu Island was cancelled. There was some other time when they failed to reach the peak of Mount Slamet because of the storm. In spite of all the failures, they be-

The guy who operates odong-odong smile sincerely, paddling the bike for the sake of children’s happy smiles. 4. Making children addicted. Those philosophies are also applied in traveling, which are to make a fun journey without costing too much, use sharing cost, traveling together, getting happiness together. Traveling with OOTers (Odongodong Travelers) is always awaited for and making people want to travel more and more.

INDONESIA IS INCREDIBLY BEAUTIFUL THIS COUPLE, WHO LIVE nomadic around the world, has been in Indonesia since July 2011. They made several meetings in Jakarta, Bandung dan Jogja. Adhadi Praja got the chance to interview Dina.

How do you get the idea of being nomad? We actually planed to backpack in a year, and we did not plan to work as backpackers. However, we are still travelling until now. It becomes our job too. Therefore, we can afford all of our needs in term of financial. That’s why we keep doing it. It has been two years and we still can afford it. Then we thought of becoming nomadic. What obstacles do you face the most as long as you live nomadic? Perhaps, internet. Not every place has good network. However, we really need internet. Ryan should actively work. If there is no internet, Ryan cannot do his work. I think, other obstacles are not very crucial. Since you have no house, backpack must have become your number one priority.

Could you tell us what kind of backpack you have? What are the things that you must bring in your backpack? Right now, our backpack’s volume is 60 liter. It is not too heavy, but it is enough to bring all of our needs in the last two years. We dream to decrease our backpack’s volume. The things that we must bring are

laptop and important documents. We do not have to bring lots of clothes. How is your opinion about the potential of Indonesian tourism? Indonesia is incredibly beautiful. However, Indonesia has bad facilities. For example, going to Raja Ampat is more expensive than traveling abroad. For foreigners, the bureaucracy to go to Indonesia is very complicated. It is easier to go to other Southeast Asia countries, such as Thailand or Malaysia. Therefore, we need to repair our facilities especially for transportation.

What is the image of Indonesia for your foreign friends? To them, Indonesia is beautiful, exotic, tropic, and mystical. Many of them know Bali, especially the ones who love to have fun. However, serious backpackers have been to many islands, like Sumatra, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Nusa Tenggara. Once, I was really embarassed when I met a backpacker from Australia who has been going around Indonesia. He knows more about Indonesia than I do. Well, what I knew was Bromo. Hahaha.. Anyway, when will your book release? Hopefully, it will be released in the end of 2011 or early 2012.

CLEANING PROCESS A. The first process 1. After completing your activity, flush the camera with flowing tap water immediately. Navigate in the lens and the parts in between the buttons or button holes (5 minutes), to clean sands that are trapped 2. Soak in a basin of water, min ½ hour (longer is better) 3. Lift and dry, and let it dried by wind. Avoid contact with sunlight directly. 4. Let it stand still for about ½ hour (until it’s dry) HOW TO TAKE CARE CHASING A. For the saving 1. Put in the dry place (not in the moist place) 2. Put the silica gel inside 3. Cover with soft case so the LCD will not be scratched
B. The last process 1. Use a blower to clean the sidelines, the corners, hollow sections, lenses, button holes 2. Open the battery & usb, then clean the rubber (the rubber walls) with dry cotton bud. Here is the last water entry but should be cleaned, otherwise it will be mossy mildew or rust 3. Do the same thing in the part of tulosan, the sidelines, the corners, with wet bud cotton bud but then with a dry 4. Then wipe it with a rag for all parts of lenses
B. At the time of use 1. Use oil lubricants before and after using the camera 2. Before using it, use anti-fog liquid in order to avoid a condensing lens 3. After the use , o Finishing your activity, flush the casing by flowing tap water. Navigate in the lens and between the buttons or button holes (5 minutes), to clean the sand that is trapped. o Soak in a basin of tap water for about ½ hour (longer is better) o Make it dry and let it dried by wind. CIRENG, A SNACK MADE from sago, is already famous for many people, especially for them who lived in Bandung. If you are walking through Cipaganti Street, you will see a lot of cireng seller’s carts. The name is Cireng Cipaganti.

The location is on Cemara Street (in front of Cipaganti gas station). I think this is one of the most delicious cireng I’ve ever tried. It’s highly recommended! This cireng is also famous in Bandung because it is the beginning of cireng industry in Bandung. Cipaganti’s cireng is famous because of the peanut sauce filling. The mixture between the crispy cireng with the peanut sauce makes us addicted. The texture of cireng is crunchy, similar with sago crackers. Cipaganti’s cireng is the crunchiest cireng among other cireng. Beside its crunchy texture, the peanut sauce filling is the reason why many people addicted to this cireng.. The peanut sauce is made from mashed peanut, added with secret spices, and tadaaaa...Here there are, the famous

peanut sauce. And the taste is soooo good! This is the specialty of Cipaganti’s cireng. The process of making cireng of peanut sauce filling is little bit different with the usual one. To make this cireng, first we have to fry the cireng. After that, it is filled with the peanut sauce. It’s is better to eat this cireng when it’s still hot. The cost for one cireng is only 1,000 Rupiahs.

Y o u’ve Got Punked! ANDIN RAHAYU. SURABAYA. After having a vacation in Yogyakarta, me and my 2 friends had to go back to Surabaya. My friend asked us to ride the business train. I refused, because it was an expensive class. But she said since she is the daughter of the employee, so she could go everywhere by train, and it’s free. She also said we could ride the business class for free too. Finally I said okay. At the end, those excuses were ineffective. We had to change train in Solo and continue with economy class train to Surabaya. Huh.
SUCI RIFANI. JAKARTA. I brought handycam and became the cameraman during my KIT trip to Sawarna. When we wanted to go home, we had a scenario for filming. After the closing scene, my friends would run through the bridge. Then when I recorded the scene, they ran fastly, they even run until the parking lot and didn’t come back. They left me with the camera that still recording and my stuffs. I need a couple of minutes to realize that they really left me. Damn!
