The course has allowed me to further develop professionally with Advice and Guidance and to look more closely at the way my Service (and not only me) does things. It has also helped me to offer better management/supervisory support to my Manager in certain areas that have been required and to better understand the role of an Advice and Guidance practitioner. It is a very good qualification to hold should I move on to another role in Advice and Guidance and should better my career prospects. My tutor’s support and guidance was invaluable, ensuring I completed the NVQ on time and hopefully gaining the City & Guilds award.”

Whilst working in the HR department for Dale & Valley Homes, Hannah completed her apprenticeship with Bishop Auckland College and has since progressed onto a degree at Northumbria University. Hannah said, “I would like to advise any person looking for a way into a career to consider an apprenticeship. It gave me the chance to see lots of different jobs and find the route that is right for me.”

Hannah Ferguson 22

What is an Apprenticeship? Apprenticeships are practical, hands on training programmes where you are paid a minimum of £95 per week while you learn. You will work with an employer 4 days per week and 1 day at the College working towards your qualification. Apprentices start at Level 2 unless they have suitable knowledge and vocational experience in their chosen field. How do I find an employer? You will need to find an employer willing to take you on as an apprentice. Whilst the College provides a support service to help you find an employer we cannot guarantee you a job. There are lots of switched on employers looking for switched on apprentices. A bit of planning and investigation will give you the edge. You can start the ball rolling by applying to companies whilst still at school with a view to being taken on as an apprentice once you leave. They may also want you to do some work experience before leaving School. Adult Apprenticeships The College offers Adult Apprenticeships in a number of occupational areas. We can also tailor the training in line with your needs and deliver it within the work place at times that are convenient for the employer including working across your shift patterns. Whether you are seeking employment, currently in a job or an employer wishing to take on an adult apprentice, contact the College for further information on 01388 443000 or visit our website: www.bishopaucklandcollege.ac.uk
