WHAT APPRENTICESHIPS ARE AVAILABLE?

HOW DO I FIND AN EMPLOYER?

With a great range of apprenticeships, Bishop Auckland College provides some amazing options to start a rewarding career. Apprenticeships are available in the following subjects:

You will need to find an employer willing to take you on as an apprentice. Whilst the College provides a support service to help you find an employer, we cannot guarantee you a job. There are lots of switched on employers looking for switched on apprentices. A bit of planning and investigation will give you the edge. You can start the ball rolling by applying to companies whilst still at school, with a view to being taken on as an apprentice once you leave. They may also want you to do some work experience before leaving school.

APPRENTICE TO ACCOUNT MANAGER IN JUST SIX MONTHS

HOW DO I APPLY FOR JOBS? It looks easy – and it can be if you put in the preparation. If you haven’t had much experience at job hunting don’t worry, the College can help with CV preparation and interview techniques.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT? If you secure a job, the College will work with you and your employer to begin your apprenticeship as soon as possible. If you do not have a job, you should still apply for an apprenticeship and we will invite you to attend an interview. It is a good idea to visit the College and come along to one of our open evenings.

Natalie Watson, aged 20, from Spennymoor, left school after taking her A Levels and wanted to step into work straight away. Natalie chose to study a Business Administration Level 2 apprenticeship, progressing to Level 3, in order to gain real experience of the world of work. After securing her apprenticeship with Newton Aycliffe based web

company, Design 365, Natalie worked hard in her role, expanding the search engine optimisation side of the business. She impressed the company owner so much that after just six months Natalie became a full-time employee, and is now the Account Manager for the search engine optimisation side of the business.

WHERE WILL I STUDY?

WHAT ARE THE CAREER BENEFITS?

Over the last few years we’ve invested millions of pounds in new facilities for our apprentices. The new centre in Spennymoor, combined with the new facilities at the main campus, provide an outstanding place for apprenticeship training.

• You work better and more effectively. • It can set you up to move into new and better jobs. • You earn a salary. • You get to experience new and different challenges. • Your existing skills and knowledge are recognised and can help you gain a qualification faster. • You learn at your own pace and get support when you need it. • You have better job security. • You gain skills and knowledge which can be used across a range of jobs and industries.

Some universities prefer to enrol students with a top National Diploma qualification in the same vocational area over those who have taken A Levels, where only one subject directly relates to their degree course.

OUR STUDENTS PROVE THAT YOU CAN GET TO UNIVERSITY WITHOUT A LEVELS!

“I gained so much confidence – I definitely wasn’t expecting to go to university. Now I want to go and be famous around the world!” SARAH GRAY BTEC NATIONAL DIPLOMA LEVEL 3 IN ART & DESIGN (equivalent to three A Levels) Sarah left Bishop Barrington School two years ago with no ambitions of going to university, but has just qualified from the College with a triple distinction in a Level 3 National Diploma in Performing Arts, equivalent to three A Level Grade As. Now the 18-year-old, from Bishop Auckland, is off to study BA Performing Arts at Cumbria University and hopes to become a television or film actress.

Qualifications such as Level 3 BTEC National Diplomas have the same value as A Levels – for example, three BTEC National Diploma distinctions are equal to three A Level grade As at 360 points.

PATRICIA WOJTKOWIAK BTEC NATIONAL DIPLOMA LEVEL 3 IN ART & DESIGN (equivalent to three A Levels) Patricia, aged 18, achieved her BTEC National Diploma in Art & Design and is off to study for a Degree in Photography at Huddersfield University. Originally from Poland, Patricia moved to England in 2007 and studied at Teesdale School in Barnard Castle. Bishop Auckland College was recommended to her by friends and family and she found out about the diploma at a College open event. After reviewing the options available to her, Patricia thought that the BTEC National Diploma course in Art & Design would be more valuable than studying A Levels as she would be able to fully immerse herself in the subject.

“I enjoyed the course. We worked in small groups, meaning the tutors could spend more time with us. I’m hoping to have a career in advertising and fashion photography.” 22
