Dear Theodorians So, we have come to the end of 2020…2020, the year of COVID -19. I recall that when I closed the school due to COVID-19, the last time I had to address a teaching staff on such a significant occasion was during the 911 crises. I mentioned at that time, that the world as we know it, will most likely be very different post 911. At the point of COVID-19 school shut down, little did we know how our year and school would be so different. It has been a year characterized by global change, new remote teaching, the universal use of Zoom and other digital platforms, the stringent health and safety protocols, the huge commitment and sacrifice of essential service workers, the anxiety about socio-economic conditions and the tragic loss of life and suffering. While respecting the challenges of the year, my message for the 2020 Yearbook is to acknowledge and celebrate achievements in a very different year. Theodor Herzl High School, as a family, rose to the COVID-19 challenge and achieved extra-ordinary levels of teaching excellence and adaptability in unprecedented and uncertain times. This accomplishment reflects again the fortitude, dedication and family partnership of Theodor Herzl School, made up of our students, teachers and parents. The bond between people who have shared tough times together is a remarkable achievement. This bond tests support, builds connections and creates institutional memory.

John Alexander Executive Principal

During the tough times of COVID-19, to take strength, I revisited one of my cherished books, “Band of Brothers” by Stephen Ambrose. This book is a superb World War 2 narrative of E Company - a company of airborne soldiers in World War 2 combat. As I read sections of the book again, the one quotation from the company leader, Captain Richard Winters, stood out profoundly for me. Captain Winters mentioned that one day, after the war, his grandson asked him if he had been a hero in the war. Captain Winters answered, “no, I was not a hero, but I served in a company of heroes.” I would like to convey, that as a school community, you have been simply remarkable. One day, when I am asked if I was an outstanding principal, I will answer no. I will, however, answer that I served in the company of an outstanding school community. I wish you all the best as we conclude 2020 and look forward to 2021. John Alexander Executive Principal

Message from Robin Williams This evening had a curious gestation! The present Grade 12s, whilst in Grade 11 had to aquaint themselves with two ISM’s other than Realism and Naturalism and became fascinated by Symbolism and Existentialism/ Absurdism. Within the exam, I provided many colourful sources (pics) of Symbolic and Absurd theatre scenarios and asked them to be inspired by the sources and create a piece of theatre on paper “mashing up” the 2 genres. And so the conception happened!!!! The scripts this teacher received after this regular examination deserved to see the light of day...or rather enjoy the limelight. On coming back to school this year, when they were informed that their work would be highlit in our annual production, the explosion happened. They all wanted to write more… exploring more of the ISM’s, Realism, Magical Realism, Expressionism, Surrealism, some Dada as well as Epic theatre, which they are studying. It has been a very special joy to work with this passionate and talented group of people for the past 4½ years. They have always given more than is expected of them and been a support to each other and me. I thank them for their commitment and love. A stay at home plague (Damien’s voice begins to be played as he reads is latest journal entry…) D.S log 253 It has been while since the virus has been found. Civilians are dropping like flies. It feels like no matter what the scientists and I try to do… there is no outcome to change it, more people are dying, and more businesses and people are going under. It’s been 2 years, and no cure was found, I wish I had chase here, he would have been here and helped me solve this. (A memory begins to playout) Chase Reidfel: I can’t keep doing this… It’s killing meDamien Smith: “It’s killing” you!? People are literally turning out there. People are “literally dying” out there! Chase Reidfel: That’s the point Damien! I’m infected. Damien Smith: (Says confusedly and surprised) Y-you’re what? Chase Reidfel: (says sadly) I’m sorry you had to find out this way, when we were this close to finding the answer to all of this. Damien Smith: (still Stunned about the news he has heard) H-how? Chase Reidfel: It happened on the 20th or the 23rd… it was too long ago to remember. Since the more “dominate” aggressive symptom was formed, I was at a camp, Helping the homeless and offering jobs to those who needed it. At some stage I was helping a man named Jonathan Murphy, he was a good man, until his sickness got worse. He managed to turn around while I was busy giving him vaccines that would help to an extent with his sicknesses, He bit me through my hamate suit. Straight to the neck, I didn’t think much of it until yesterday… I began to bleed through my nose, but it was unusual amounts. And then… that’s when I remembered the bite, It’s just getting worse. (Chase reveals his bite to Damien) Damien Smith: And what now!? What did they do with Jonathan!? Chase Reidfel: They took him into quarantine and removed contact with him. Damien Smith: (Says frustratedly) That’s it!? He should be executed! Chase Reidfel: No… he was a good man, if you knew him as well as I did, you would agree that he didn’t mean it. Damien Smith: I don’t care if it was accidental or not! You are sick now, and the only thing he is going to give to this world is more infections. Chase Reidfel: (smashes the counter they are standing by to try and progress his point) We’re making this cure to stop this Infection! There is no damn point on killing the infected and having this cure get made! Damien Smith: I JUST DON’T WANT TO LOSE YOU! Chase Reidfel: (begins to talk calmly again) We can’t all have what we want… Damien Smith: You’re like a brother to me… You have always been there when I needed you. Chase Reidfel: Well, now it’s your turn to be there for the world, because it needs you. (the two hug as the weep, Chase looks down as Damien as he sees his tears dropping down to the floor, Chase ruffels through Damiens hair as he pats him) Chase Reidfel: (says whilst trying to hold back his tears) You were always a cryaby. (the two do a small chuckle as the finish by giving each other a final secnd ofa good bye, they both get back up and get back to work) (An audio begins to play as the lights focus onto the two with their backs to the audience. The light dims) Chase Reidfel: I love you. (this audio plays as there is gentle harmony playing in the background. Its “Ah Ha take on me slowed down and played on piano.”) Damien Smith: I love you too, my brother… I miss you. (The audio begins soften as the lights dim out and the curtains pull in.)

The No School Scoundrels by Keanu Kruger The day before lockdown started Adam runs into Kiara’s house with some bad news Adam: Kiara did you the News last night Kiara: what news? Adam: (says with emphasis) what do you mean what news, the news that the whole country is going into this thing called lockdown because of the coronavirus. Kiara: (shocked) No way you must be joking right just when it was about to be end of term and we had such fun plans for the holidays. Adam: (angrily) I know right, our families were going to go to Cape Town together and we were going to go to the top of Table Mountain, eat at such nice restaurants and even going to go on a boat trip. But now everything is cancelled because of lockdown> Kiara: Shoot! well then, I guess we’ll have to think of fun things we can do in lockdown. Adam: but were going to have online schooling so we can’t do much. Kiara: you must be kidding me right we are fifteen-year-old children who want to have fun so were going to, have, fun. Adam: I know how we can do that. Kiara: how? Adam: If we find a way to get rid of every app that we could possibly use for school there will be no other choice but for us to be given a break. Kiara: that’s actually a great idea (says jokingly) surprising you came up with it though. Adam: heyyy!! Kiara: I’m just teasing you. Adam: Anyways I know how we can do it. I say we go on the black market and find a middle-aged hacker who probably has nothing better to do than help kids delete schooling apps. Kiara: aka every hacker on the black market, anyways let’s do it. They walk into Kiara’s bedroom excited Adam: ok first things first let’s look at the prices I think our budget should be around let’s say 5000 rand. Kiara: (shocked) 5000 are you crazy that’s all my savings. Adam: well it’s what we’re going to have to pay to get rid of school. Kiara: fine! They scroll for a bit Adam: aha here perfect this says he will hack anything for 4500 Rand that’s within budget we have to do it. Kiara: ok lets do it. Adam: ok I sent the request... No Way! He responded he says he can have it done by next week, next week really, we want it done now. I guess we will have to wait. Ugh One week passes and Adam goes to Kiara’s house to check if all the apps are gone Adam: ok let’s see (intense music plays) Oh My Goodness (in sync) lets goooo, there all gone. Kiara: oh my gosh no way. Adam: what? Kiara: I just got an email from school saying we don’t have online schooling as all the apps have somehow disappeared. Wohoo! Adam: we have to tell the whole world we did this. Kiara: we can’t we would get in so much trouble Adam: you’re right, well let’s go have fun then because we have no schooool we have no schoool. They go to Adams house happy as can be knowing that they have no school all because of them. The End A little note as to why I wrote my script about this: Hey Mam so I decided to write my script about these two teenagers who were incredibly upset at the fact that they had online schooling which I’m sure most students and maybe even teachers can relate to so I made it about these two teens Adam and Kiara who want to delete every possible app that could be used for schooling. And you said our story had to be about something that could happen during lockdown and I think this most certainly could have happened or was thought about by students across the world but none had the capabilities of doing so which is good because I don’t think anyone can go this long without education. I hope you enjoyed sincerely Keanu.
