WELCOME TO YONEX DENMARK OPEN 2013 Now Badminton Denmark (BD) again has lined up for a big badminton event, when the best badminton equilibrists of the world visit Odense. We are talking about a sport where the entertainment, the intensity and the excitement all the way through will be at world class level right from the qualifying matches till the day of the finals. Last year Yonex Denmark Open was played in continuation of two medals to Badminton Denmark at the Olympic Games in London and this year our players will try to follow up on two World Championship medals. The Danish players, coaches and leaders look forward to the tournament and are ready to make a 100 per cent effort well supported by the enthusiastic and sympathetic spectators at the home ground. When BD year after year are able to arrange such a big tournament as a Premier Superseries this is caused by several conditions. • • •

BD has a fantastic support from our prime sponsor Yonex, Odense Municipality and Sport Event Denmark BD has within the last year said goodbye to several international Danish profiles, but BD are constantly able to develop world class players out of the many talents that our clubs produce with the help of their many coaches and volunteers. It is important that we as the organizer have players who can join in the game about the podium places. BD has a competent, professional staff and together with the quite indispensable volunteers from primarily Odense Badminton Klub, we are able to get through and manage a big event as a Premier Superseries tournament.

I also want to thank the rest of our regular partners: Yonex, OK, TV3 Sport, Rema 1000, Holstebro RejseCenter, EKJ Fonden, Odense Kommune, Udvikling Fyn, Visit Fyn, Fyens Stifttidende og Sport Event Denmark. Welcome to all players, coaches, leaders, officials, volunteers and last but not least the spectators to an exciting week rich on experiences in Odense Idrætshal.

WELCOME TO YONEX DENMARK OPEN 2013 On behalf of the city of Odense it is a great pleasure to welcome you all to the Danish part of the international BWF World Superseries, Yonex Denmark Open 2013. The area of sports and events is very much prioritized by the city of Odense. To host big sports events in Odense does not only stimulate the public interest for sports and exercise in all; it also makes it possible on close hand to experience sport in the absolute elite – sometimes even world class. Therefore, we are looking forward to an exciting week filled with intense fight and spectacular badminton; the city is proud and happy about having the best players in the world coming to Odense and showing us their talents. With this year, Yonex Denmark Open has been held in Odense seven times, and since the beginning in 2007, it has become an event that really places Odense on the international sports scene. By hosting this event, we are automatically compared with big cities like Paris, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Tokyo and Hong Kong – cities which normally get much more international attention than our city. We have to cherish this attention. Odense sees big sports events as an important attraction and an asset for the citizens and also as a way to stand out as a unique city. Therefore, it is of great importance for the city of Odense that the city council has signed a new 4 year contract with Badminton Denmark for the Superseries event Yonex Denmark Open in the years 2014-2017. So in the future, we can still use the marketing-, tourism- and business potentials of the event. But first of all, the scene is set for a fantastic and exiting badminton event for both participants and spectators. I know Badminton Denmark, the City of Odense and the volunteers will certainly do anything we can, to make this event a success in every way. Once again welcome to Odense, have a pleasant time and good luck to all the participants.

WELCOME TO ODENSE AND TO THE YONEX DENMARK OPEN! This is my first opportunity as BWF President to greet the badminton family on my home turf and I trust that everyone will have a memorable and – for the teams – successful stay with us.

rate partners, your faith and trust in us is much appreciated. In particular, I wish to laud OSIM, our Superseries global sponsor, which has been a strong partner of the BWF in making the Superseries a successful reality.

It is a wonderful time to be involved in badminton – a lot of exciting and positive things are happening as we watch our sport growing from strength to strength.

Yonex – the well-known sporting brand and loyal title sponsor of this tournament – continues to provide vital financial support for the Yonex Denmark Open and badminton in general and their contribution is also much appreciated.

Sponsorship revenues have increased significantly, broadcast figures are rising, development programmes have been well received and the presentation of our events and the sport has improved tremendously. As we celebrate badminton’s inclusion as a core sport for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, I believe it is apt that we take stock of what we have done while recognizing the efforts of so many people and parties who have made all these achievements possible. To all our Member Associations, a big thank you for your strong and unwavering support of all our events, projects and decisions. Our solid partnership makes our sport continue to grow rapidly and reap success. My sincere appreciation also goes to the leadership of my predecessor Dr. Kang Young Joong and the Council of 2009-2013 for working tirelessly to promote and develop our sport. I also recognize and applaud the contribution of our sponsors and corpo-

Of course, the Superseries would not be the wonderful spectacle it is without our players, fans, technical officials and volunteers. You are our pillars of strength and we look forward to many more great events with you all. The Yonex Denmark Open, the penultimate leg of the OSIM BWF World Superseries Premier, has been billed as a tournament to “Meet the Stars” and our sport has been blessed with so many “stars” who have kept the sport shining – thank you. I want to also thank Badminton Denmark for striving to make the Yonex Denmark Open better every year and for taking on the challenge of hosting the BWF World Championships in 2014. To all the other supporting partners and sponsors, our gratitude to you as well. Poul-Erik Høyer

BWF WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS 2014 IN DENMARK BY C H R I S T I A N T H E L I N

When the BWF World Championships is played next year in Copenhagen it will be the fourth time in Denmark since the first World Championship was played in 1977. Denmark became host for the first time in 1983 and the tournament was a huge success. The organizers did a great job and the Danish players made sure that the spectators got lots to cheer about. In Men’s double Steen Fladberg and Jesper Helledie won the title. Steen Fladberg also got a silver medal in Mixed double with partner Pia Nielsen. The big home favourite in Men’s single Morten Frost lost in the quarterfinal to later champion Icuk Sugiarto from Indonesia. In 1991 the World Championships took place in Denmark for the second time. The organisers did again a fantastic job and the tournament got great compliments from everybody participating. The Danish players did very well again. But this time the home crowd was not enough to secure a title. Thomas Lund and Jon Holst-Christensen in Men’s double and Thomas Lund together with Pernille Dupont in Mixed double both lost their finals and had to settle with silver medals.

Only eight years later, in 1999 it was again Denmark that won the rights to host the World Championship. A lot of promising players had made their way to the absolute top of the sport and especially in the Mens’ singles the Danish fans had high hopes. With five players among the last eight it looked like a good chance. But unfortunately for the Danes Sun Jun from China was simply to good. Peter Gade and PoulErik Høyer both won bronze medals and could cheer with the whole nation when Camilla Martin won a dramatic and nerve wracking final in Women’s single against Dai Yun from China with incredible 11-10 in the final set. It was a final that will never be forgotten by those who witnessed it. We now write 2013 and with only a year to go to the BWF World Championship to be played in Denmark hopes are of course high to repeat the good results from the three other championship held in Denmark. But no matter what it will for sure be an astonishing show with the best players on the planet entering the tournament. You don’t want to miss that. Do you?

“Vi støtter Børnehjælpsdagen”

”What appeals me about The Children’s Aid Foundation is that is it very tangible and concrete. Through different activities the organization provides the children in care with tools that enables them to see their own competences and strengths – abilities which the children may not have known or believed they possessed. If I can contribute in giving these children rays of comfort, it is my pleasure to do so.” Peter Gade

“My hope is, that I can give the children in care some different experiences than what they know from their everyday life. I am super excited about meeting the children, and hopefully they will be up for playing badminton with me and just have a lot of fun.” Christinna Pedersen

ADVENTURE AWAITS ON FUNEN You can’t say Funen without also saying Hans Christian Andersen. And when you visit Funen, you can plainly see how the famous author was inspired to write many of his famous fairy tales. The island is a cornucopia of adventure - whether you are island hopping in the South Funen archipelago, visiting Egeskov Castle or exploring Odense, the ‘capital’ of Funen. child friendly beaches in every direction, its many camp sites with water parks and playgrounds, as well as plenty of activities for children and families. Try feeding a giraffe, find your way through the world’s largest hedge-maze or feel the rush of swinging through the tree tops. We are not joking when we say that Funen is the fairy tale island – there are lots of places for exploring, challenging yourself, playing, learning, and most of all, having great fun together.

GO ISLAND HOPPING The South Funen Archipelago is perfect for casual island hopping – whether you choose to sail around between the isles, go on a bicycle vacation or hike along the 200 km long Archipelago Trail through the South Funen landscape. Sailing between the South Funen isles is a beautiful, relaxing and peaceful way to spend your vacation.

CULINARY AND HISTORICAL EXPERIENCES ADVENTURE BEGINS IN ODENSE Odense is the central island hub, and it unites the cosy Funen charm and atmosphere with a big city ambience and experience. You can always find an interesting exhibition, a big-name concert or a fun attraction for the whole family. The lively market streets in the city centre invite you to go treasure hunting in the small, unique designer shops or sit down at one of the cafés and take in the city’s history. Hans Christian Andersen’s home, the Tinderbox, a cultural centre for children, and the Danish Railway Museum are all within walking distance from the pedestrian street as well as the train station. Nearby you can go for a boat ride down Odense River towards Denmark’s friendliest ZOO.

Funen’s excellent produce has become a hallmark of the island: Everywhere, various foods are being produced: Vegetable gardens, fruit orchards, cattle ranchers, microbreweries, cheeseries, ice cream dairies and chocolatiers. The tradition of cultivating high quality ingredients is deeply rooted in the rich Funen soil. And the Funen soil also takes some of the credit for the many castles and manors. Nowhere else in the country are manors situated so closely together: a total of 123 castles and manors lie sprinkled across Funen and the isles. Some of them are open to the public – Egeskov and Valdemars Castle being the most famous - offering both historical and actionpacked experiences for all ages.

diabetes!

SMASHING AMBITIONS WITH DANISH BADMINTON Badminton is a national sport in Denmark. The Danish badminton players are world class and have been for decades. YONEX DENMARK OPEN ER (OGSÅ) OPVARMNING TIL VM Yonex Denmark Open inviterer igen i år indenfor i Odense til verdensklasse badminton.

YONEX DENMARK OPEN – HIGHLIGHTS Get the biggest highlights of the Yonex Denmark Open history. BY C H R I S T I A N T H E L I N

In 1936 the first tournament was played in Copenhagen. The first name of the tournament was: “International Championships of Denmark”. The tournament has changed name with time. Up to the 1990’ties the tournament was The Danish Open. The Yonex Denmark Open has been part of the title ever since. The Second World War put a stop to this new invention in Danish badminton. For five years Yonex Denmark Open waited in the dark and finally, in 1946 the tournament was back. In 1967 and for many years to come the finals were played in K.B. Hallen in Copenhagen. - I remember I took the train to K. B. Hallen to watch the tournament. Already at that time the tournament had a great tradition, and it was great to watch, the former champion Morten Frost says. The tournament has been played in many Danish mayor cities. Besides Aalborg, Vejle, Farum, Aarhus and now Odense have hosted the tournament each for several years.

FROST PROUDER THAN BEFORE Morten Frost is the most winning player ever at the tournament. He has taken a total of 8 titles – 7 in a row! - The tournament was one of the first great victories I got. And I won the trophy to keep, Morten Frost says and continues: - It’s always great to win a title for the first time, but for me it’s like, when you win the title again, it’s bigger, because you can do it again. When I’m thinking of it today, I’m very proud. Maybe even prouder than I was, when I won the titles, Morten Frost says. Danish profiles like Erland Kops, Finn Kobberø, Flemming Delfs, Lene Køppen, Poul-Erik Høyer, Thomas Lund, Camilla Martin and Peter Gade have all won the tournament.

Yonex Denmark Open made the price money at $400.000. $30.000 for Men’s and Women’s singles and $31.600 for the doubles category.

MALAYSIAN SUPER STAR IN FOR TITEL DEFENSE The defending champion, Lee Chong Wei, will certainly be put the test in his effort of trying to reclaim the title in a strong category, where the twenty highest ranked players in the world are present and ready to fight for the medals. BY A L E X A N D E R W E N G P E T E R S E N

MEN’S SINGLE | PROFILES

Lee Chong Wei (Malaysia) No. 1 in the world (as of September 19 2013) The Malaysian Superstar Lee Chong Wei is considered to be one of the most prominent title candidates this year. Not only did he win the Yonex Denmark Open last year, he also has several other impressive titles chained to his resumé from the past year. The 30 year old Malaysian, who turns 31 the day after the finals, has since January stood on the upper step of the podium at tournaments like the Malaysia Open and the Indonesia Open, to name af few. Despite his outstanding medal record, he has missed out on two big titles this year, the ones from the All England and the World Championships, where he was surpassed by Chen Long and Lin Dan respectively. Since both of these Chinese gentlemen are participating in Odense this year, Lee Chong Wei will have to rise to his best in order to be able to retain the title.

Chen Long (China) No. 2 in the world (as of September 19 2013) The 24 year old Chinese is back in Odense to win back the title he won in 2011 and nearly reclaimed last year, where he finished as runner-up after losing to Lee Chong Wei in the final. Chen Long has achieved some respectable results this year. Among other, he managed to claim the title at the prestigious All England tournament back in March, beating Lee Chong Wei in the final and Jan Ø. Jørgensen in the semi final. Before that, Long had also won the German Open as well as the Super Series Finals in the late 2012. Since his performance in England, however, Chen Long has not a claimed a single medal. Latest at The World Championships he was beaten in the quarter final by the later winner, Lin Dan.

the Yonex Denmark Open 2012 Tago finished among the 16 best, so this year he is definitely expected to do better. The Japanese is in it to win it, and his opponents do better not underestimate him.

Jan Ø. Jørgensen (Denmark) No. 6 in the world (as of September 19 2013) 25 year old Jørgensen, who is a former winner of the Yonex Denmark Open, is probably the Dane most likely to win a medal this year in Odense. Last year he managed to go all the way to the semi final, where he however lost to the later winner, Lee Chong Wei. Jan Ø. Jørgensen has managed to gain some respectable victories during his career, especially in the year of 2012. That year he, among other, managed to beat Lin Dan for the first and so far only time in his career. In 2013, the Dane can boast of having reached the semi finals at the Malaysia Open, the All England, the Swiss Open and lately the China Masters. He nearly reached the semi final at the World Championships as well, but ended up losing by inches to Tien Minh Nguyen in the quarter final after having run and fought for more than an hour straight. However, the ability to run and fight like that, is exactly what Jørgensen is good at. One of the best in the world, presumably. With a physical condition like few and a set of hardened mental skills, the Dane is in Odense to impress his home crowd and make life difficult for the other title candidates.

Kenichi Tago (Japan) No. 5 in the world (as of September 19 2013) Kenichi Tago, son of the former top player Yoshiko Yonekura, has arrived in Odense and is ready to stir things up in the men’s singles category. The 24 year old Japanese has come to Denmark with a great boost of confidence after have reached the final on home soil at the Japan Open last month, where he however lost to Lee Chong Wei. Tago also has achieved other great results this year, including a runner-up placement at the India Open as well as third places at the Malaysia Open, last year’s Hong Kong Open and last year’s French Open.

Chen Long har opnået flere respektable resultater i år. Blandt andet formåede han at vinde den prestigefyldte turnering All England tilbage i marts, hvor han slog Lee Chong Wei i finalen efter at have besejret Jan Ø. Jørgensen i semifinalen.

Li Xuerui (China) No. 1 in the world (as of September 19 2013) On top of the world ranking list sits the 22 year old Chinese, Li Xuerui. During the last year and a half she has cemented her right to be considered one of the best and most talented women’s singles players in the game. In 2012 she won some very prestigious tournaments, including the All England, the Super Series Finals and even the Olympics. In 2013 she has continued to impress, for example by going all the way at the Premier tournament, Indonesia Open as well as winning silver at the recently played World Championships. Last year in Odense Li Xuerui surprisingly exited in the quarter finals, so it is assumed that the young Chinese has set her mind on doing better this year in the Danish Premier tournament.

Ratchanok Intanon (Thailand) No. 2 in the world (as of September 19 2013) After having emerged on the big, international badminton stage at the age of only 16, her career has skyrocketed. Today, still only 18 years old, Thailand’s Ratchanok Intanon is considered one of the world’s best women’s singles players. She holds several age related records, including the one for being the youngest World Champion ever. She is also the youngest All England finalist and the youngest ever winner of a Super Series tournament (India Open 2013). Intanon is definitely one to watch this year at Yonex Denmark Open, where it is believed she can go all the way.

third places at the Indonesia Open, the Swiss Open and the All England, but the first places and gold medals remain to be claimed in 2013.

Wang Yihan (China) No. 6 in the world (as of September 19 2013) A year ago the 25 year old Chinese was ranked as the world’s best women’s singles player. Despite her current ranking as no. 6 in the world, she is however still believed to be one of the most respectable competitors for the title in Odense. Last year she reached the semi final at the Yonex Denmark Open. After that performance, the Chinese has since claimed two international titles, more specifically at the German Open and the Singapore Open. All combined, the former world no. 1 has won more than 20 international titles, where her most prominent victories continue to be the ones at the World Championships and the Super Series Finals, both gained in the year 2011.

Saina Nehwal (India) No. 4 in the world (as of September 19 2013) The 23 year old Indian is a big star in her homeland and probably one of her country’s most talented badminton players in recent time. Saina Nehwal has set more than a few records for India, among others the one of being the first Indian ever to win a Super Series tournament, which she did when she went all the way at the Indonesia Open back in 2009, only 19 years old. Last summer she also became the first Indian player ever to win a medal at The Olympics. A few months later she won the title at Yonex Denmark Open, which she is now back to defend. That gold medal, however, is the last one she has claimed. The last twelve months have resulted in a runner-up placement at last year’s French Open and

I 2012 vandt hun nogle meget prestigefyldte turneringer, blandt andet All England, Super Series-finalerne og endda De Olympiske Lege.

DANES IN FOR THE GOLD ON HOME SOIL Danish Mathias Boe and Carsten Mogensen are expected to go far at the Yonex Denmark Open, but the field is strong again this year, seeing the arrival of the reigning World Champions as well as more than a few other world class pairs. New constellations consisting of top class players feature in the programme as well. BY A L E X A N D E R W E N G P E T E R S E N

MEN’S DOUBLES | PROFILES

Mohammad Ahsan/Hendra Setiawan (Indonesia) No. 2 in the world (as of September 19 2013) Previously Hendra Setiawan partnered with Markis Kido, and together they managed to win several prestigious tournaments, including the world championships in 2007. Now he is pairing up with Mohammad Ahsan, and throughout the past year, the two Indonesians have forged an impressive partnership based on fierce and forceful power play. Their style of play has helped them secure some great titles, among others the one as World Champions. Back in August they secured the gold medals in China after defeating Danish Mathias Boe and Carsten Mogensen in the final. Besides of that victory, the Indonesians also own gold medals from the Singapore Open and the Indonesia Open as well as the Malaysia Open, which was in fact the duos first gold medal. Last year at the Yonex Denmark Open they finished third.

Mathias Boe/Carsten Mogensen (Denmark) No. 3 in the world (as of September 19 2013) Not so long ago, Mathias Boe and Carsten Mogensen topped the world ranking. Understandable, considering the results they have achieved throughout their career, especially during the past few years. Boe, 33, and Mogensen, 30, have been on the podium at almost every major tournament in the game, and have even won some of them as well, including the All England back in 2011. That year they also won the China Open and shortly thereafter the Super Series Finals, which they in fact did the year after as well. Last summer the Danes managed to win the silver medals at the Olympics, which was an act they repeated this summer at the World Championships.

Koo Kien Keat/Tan Boon Heong (Malaysia) No. 4 in the world (as of September 19 2013) Back in 2010, these two Malaysians were ranked as the best men’s double pair in the world. They have previously won the All England, but have in fact not collected any gold medals for quite a while. At the Yonex Denmark Open last year, Koo Kien Keat and Tan Boon Heong finished second, losing to Shin Baek Choel and Yoo Yeon Seong in the final, and shortly thereafter won silver at the Hong Kong Open as well. At the China Open last year and the Korea Open in January they finished third, but have not won any medals since then.

Despite that fact, the pair is still to be considered a major threat at this year’s edition of the Yonex Denmark Open, given the level the two Malaysians are able to play at when they are at their best.

Liu Xiaolong/Qiu Zihan (China) No. 7 in the world (as of September 19 2013) This young Chinese men’s doubles pair has been playing together for quite a while now, and have achieved some respectable results so far during their partnership. Worth mentioning is, for example, their gold medal from this year’s edition of The All England as well as their bronze medals from the recently played China Masters and last year’s Hong Kong Open. At the World Championships back in August the two Chinese only made it to the second round, which was what also happened at the Indonesia Open a few months earlier. Xiaolong, 25, and Zihan, 22, are certainly a threat to most pairs when they are at their best, but the question is just whether they will or will not reach their top level here in Odense.

HIGH HOPES FOR DANES IN FRONT OF HOME CROWD The Danish women’s double consisting of Christinna Pedersen and Kamilla Rytter Juhl have for a long time proven that they can perform alongside the best in the category. Yu Yang/Wang Xiaoli (China) No. 1 in the world (as of September 19 2013) Some people might remember these two ladies from the scandal at the Olympics in London last year, where they were disqualified from the tournament after having purposely tried to lose a match to affect the draw. However, Yu Wang and Wang Xiaoli are so much more than a scandal pair. They are unquestionably

the world’s best women’s doubles duo when they are at their best, which is proven by the medals they have collected throughout their career. Alone in the past twelve months, Yu, 27, and Wang, 24, have won no less than six tournaments, including the All England and the World Championships. Their opponents will certainly have to play at their very best if they are supposed to be a threat to these Chinese top players.

Misaki Matsutomo/Ayaka Takahashi (Japan) No. 3 in the world (as of September 19 2013) This pair has earned their ranking as no. 3 in the world by being one thing - stabile. Throughout the previous year, Misaki Matsutomo and Ayaka Takahashi have delivered many respectable results. However, they have not managed to reach the upper step of the podium at the big tournament for quite some time now. In the past twelve months, the duo has won silver at the Singapore Open, the Malaysia Open and last year’s edition of the Yonex Denmark Open, but has not managed to go all the way. The pair’s condition is none the less still proven by all the results they have gained in the previous twelve months, including quarter finals at the Indonesia Open, the Korea Open and the Super Series finals, just to name a few.

Christinna Pedersen/Kamilla Rytter Juhl (Denmark) No. 4 in the world (as of September 19 2013) Throughout the last few years, Christinna Pedersen and Kamilla Rytter Juhl have managed to establish

themselves as a world class pair in the women’s doubles category. Today they are ranked 4 in the world, only outranked by the very best of the Asians, and have several impressive results to boast of. Recently they won silver at the Japan Open and bronze at the World Championships, and throughout the past twelve months they have also managed to collect silver medals at the India Open and last year’s editions of the Super Series Finals and French Open. Last year the two Danes suffered a surprising exit in the very first round at the Yonex Denmark Open, so they are definitely set to impress this year and hope to do so in front of their home crowd in Odense.

Jung Kyung Eun/Kim Ha Na (Korea) No. 6 in the world (as of September 19 2013) The two Koreans, both 23 years of age, are among the youngest medal candidates in this year’s edition of the Yonex Denmark Open. Some might also remember them as the other pair, that was disqualified from last year’s London Olympics, but they have since then impressed by achieving good results in major tournaments all around the world. Their first big title came in 2012 where went all the way at the India Open. After that victory, Eun and Na have also won the Swiss Open as well as the Chinese Taipei Open this year. Besides those top placements, they have also participated in prestigious tournaments such as the World Championships and the All England, where they have reached the quarter finals. With those results they have proven that they can participate in the top and that they are a pair that is not to be underestimated.

WORLD TOP ASSEMBLED:

IT WILL BE CLOSE IN MIXED DOUBLES According to the current world ranking list this year’s mixed double row at Yonex Denmark Open is going to be extremely close. Two Chinese and one Indonesian pair lies almost side by side at top of the world ranking list, but the Yonex Denmark Open champions from 2011 and world number four, Christinna Pedersen and Joachim Fischer Nielsen, are ready to mingle. All four and a myriad of other world class pairs are ready to fight for victory at this year’s tournament. BY M O R T E N N I E L S E N

Zhang Nan/Zhao Yunlei (China) World no. 1 (As of the 25th of September 2013) At the very top of the mixed doubles’ pairs’ world ranking list Chinese Zhang Nan and Zhao Yunlei find themselves. The Chinese pair were earlier in their career a bit unstable, but this year it’s like Zhang and Zhao have been more consistent. The couple has in so far in 2013 delivered impressive and stable results with victories at Indonesia Open and Korea Open. In addition, they won silver at the All England and got a third place at the World Championships on home soil in August. At last year’s Yonex Denmark Open Zhang and Zhao reached the semifinals before they were stopped by Indonesian Ahmad and Natsir.

Xu Chen/Ma Jin (China) World no. 2 (As of the 25th of September 2013) Xu Chen and Ma Jin from China has just got pushed away from the throne as the holders of the world rankings first place, but not longer than the Chinese pair is currently ranked as the world’s second best mixed double pair. Xu and Ma’s worst result this year came at the All England where they were knocked out in the quarterfinals, which indicates a very high base level. Last year they won both China Masters, China Open and especially Yonex Denmark Open after a rousing victory in the final against Indonesian Ahmad and Natsir. But this year, Ma and Xu have not been quite as diligent to climb the prize podium’s top step. The Chinese pair has however won silver medals at the Korea Open and most recently at the World Championships, so it’s a Chinese couple in good shape coming to Odense.

with confidence who are ready for the start of this year’s Yonex Denmark Open.

Joachim Fischer Nielsen/Christinna Pedersen (Denmark) World no. 4 (As of the 25th of September) They play at home in Denmark where the crowd in Odense will try to help Christinna Pedersen and Joachim Fischer Nielsen all the way to the final of this year’s Yonex Denmark Open. Two years ago, Pedersen and Fischer won the tournament, but last year the defending Olympic bronze medalists were beaten in the round of 16. This year, the Danish couple won Malyasia Open and Swiss Open, while Fischer Nielsen and Pedersen have been a second placed at Indonesia Open and a third placed at the Korea Open. 2013 has been a little volatile year for Pedersen and Fischer, who recently did a great semi-final place at Japan Open, but the Danish couple will be highly motivated to show the home crowd some fantastic badminton when this year’s Yonex Denmark Open kicks off.

Since last year, Ahmad and Natsir moved up a step on the world ranking list so that they currently occupy the third place. And Ahmad and Natsir is placed third in the world for a reason. 2013 has so far been a fantastic year for the Indonesian couple who can write an India Open victory and a victory at the All England on their CV. In addition Ahmad and Natsir also achieved an impressive result at the World Champions in the China two months ago where they won the tournament. It is therefore an Indonesian couple brimming

MIXEDDOUBLE | PROFILES
