EDITOR’S NOTE

How time passed by in a blur. It has been a long journey for me leading the publishing of the newsletters of this publication since 2021, honing vivid and critical minds of the collegian’s mind.

With what the publication has gone through inside the two years span, no portal can fence us to amplify the voices of the masses, defend freedom, and publish truth.

Sure, much things have happened, but we will never get astray of what is happening in the country. This semester’s school paper delved into the changing of the nation’s tourism slogan. There’s no more fun

in the Philippines now, yet the tourism department sounds audaciously authoritative with its new tagline campaign, Love the Philippines. In a motherland where injustices, inequality, poverty, and funneling of funds seemed to be endless, love is not enough. Between to love or to leave the country, the former is an ideal Filipino character, but with the red flags that the systems in the Pearl of the Orient are waving, no doubt every Juan will choose the latter.

Navigate through this issue and be awakened!

Barangay, Sangguniang Kabataan

COA’s Cum Laude twins underscore values of giving back to family

“If kapoy na, I always remember na mas kapoy among parents and mga kuya na nagapaskwela sa amoa.”

This was the inspiring statement shared by Jackielou Llanera Paches, one of the twins who graduated as Cum Laude from College of Agriculture (COA), under the course of Bachelor of Science in Agriculture and Biosystems Engineering (BS ABE), emphasizing how important to think and give back the sacrifices of a family for one’s educational life.

“Giving back to my hardworking parents and brothers is my priority. I love the subtle smiles my family would react every time we deliver good news,” Miss Jackielou stressed.

Meanwhile her twin Jackielyn Llanera Paches, who took the same course with her twin, also highlighted the importance of repaying the sacrifices done by their family considering their poverty situation.

“Eskwela kamo tarong kay wala gid kami sang manggad nga ipanubli sa inyo,” Miss Jackielyn said as she reiterated the

words of her parents often said to them.

The twins take pride in every endeavor they achieve because they think this is how they will return all the time poured on them by their family and by graduating, they know that they can alleviate the financial burden, at least, of their current living situation.

Since they were motivated by their family to do good in studies, Paches twins entered Mindanao State UniversityGeneral Santos City with a dream to graduate with Latin honors and it became true as they marched the aisle during the 44th Commencement Exercise wearing the Cum Laude medals.

TWIN SCHOLARS

Luckily, the sisters were also scholars of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), which gave them big relief to not worry about their education financial expenses.

“We never had to ask for money from our parents and we even provided for them,” the sisters pointed out.

Through the scholarship, it boosted their motivation to work hard because their pride and privilege were anchored on the expectations from many people which heightened their eagerness to prove their worth as scholars.

TWINS’ REMEDY TO CHALLENGES

No doubt that the twin sisters did not graduate easily as they stumbled upon on many obstacles along their journey just to accomplish their struggles.

“The major challenge is the hit of the pandemic in 2019 and classes shifted to online learning. I lost my focus and was struggling to cope up with my lessons,” Miss Jackielyn said.

In addition to that, during the pandemic they worked hard to provide additional finances for their family.

Then the twins were worried again when the classes shifted back to physical interaction and had the hard time adjusting themselves especially on study habits.

“I questioned myself kung maka-graduate

ba talaga ako on time because everything was hard. We were challenged on our last academic year in BS ABE,” she stated.

However, as twins, they could rely only on each other and survive these obstacles, that is why in terms of studying, Jackielou shared that they would go separately and if they feel that they are ready to answer then they will throw questions to each other like a mock exam.

“I believe that a diamond earns its sparkles from the pressure it endures. Because of that, we managed to study well and reminded each other whenever we have requirements to pass,” Jackielyn

uttered, which is one of the reasons why they were able to secure Cum Laude honors.

TWINS’ ADVICE

Miss Jackielyn always bears her motto in life, “the harder you work, the better you will be,” which made her survive in Mindanao State University-General Santos.

“You have to balance everything. As a person na may pakialam, I also try to initiate things in group activities because in doing so, I can learn,” she shared.

She also said that finding a good circle of

friends will make students’ college life easier and happier.

On the other hand, Miss Jackielou relayed that all of the courses are not easy which made her start to doubt.

“I have big dreams for myself and for my family. I assess myself and learn to conquer my weaknesses,” she emphasized.

The Paches sisters are now reviewing for their board examination this coming September in great hopes to pass it or even top it.

“As part of the council of one of the student organizations in the university, the approval of 80 pesos SSC, I think is mutually beneficial to both the organization and student body. Greater mobilization, project actualization, and greater engagement, to name a few are things it may bring about,” pahayag ni Rey.

“Tsaka, with the current situation right now due to inflation, a shift from 50 pesos to 80 pesos could cause meaningful impact, so long as transparency and student welfare is the utmost priority,” dagdag pa ni Malificiado.

HandiCOPs to an

On what could have been a festive and colorful culmination of the month-long celebration of the Pride Month 2023, a controversial and transphobic event transpired as Awra Briguela, a Philippine renowned actress, comedian, and trans woman was vehemently manhandled by the Makati Philippine National Police (PNP) and bouncers and was put behind bars after being violently after figuring in a brawl at a bar in Poblacion Makati. For those who could have been keepers of peace and implementers of laws have become perpetrators of discrimination and brutality on one’s sexual orientation, gender identity, and expression, Philippines is still far from becoming a truly inclusive country.

According to the Southern Police District (SPD), an argument broke out between Briguela and the group of the complainant, Mark Christian Ravana, after she and her friends allegedly demanded the latter to take off his shirt, with her tearing his shirt after he declined. Ravana and a bouncer then called the Poblacion Police Substation. When the police arrived, Briguela resisted arrest, and allegedly used profane language on the officers. However, in the viral video of the arrest, it can be seen that the actress was surrounded by bouncers and police, with an officer seen heavily manhandling her even as she hit the ground. It can be heard that another woman in the crowd was repeatedly screaming, “Anong ginagawa niya?,” as police continued to make a frightening abuse of police authority against a trans woman.

On the other hand, in an interview with Raffy Tulfo, Edward Cutiyog, Makati Police Chief, released a justification which turned out to become an extremely homophobic remark saying that Awra wanted to see the body of Ravana because she was gay. However, Atty. Chel Diokno called out the Makati Police and asked to stop making generalizations against the LGBTQIA+ community, and ensure that an investigation without prejudice is done–regardless of the people involved sexual orientation, gender identity or expression.

Inclusive Society

Diokno noted that both assault and sexual harassment are serious matters and it is everyone’s privilege to have a right to a safe and respectful environment regardless of their Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Expression (SOGIE), which clearly is lacking on the police officers involved.

Clearly, the vehement arrest of Awra is an extensive manifestation of transphobia and police brutality. When people in power utilize their authority to steer fear to the people, let alone violently arrest an unarmed trans woman of no strength, it reflects poorly on the capabilities of the PNP. As Sen. Risa Hontiveros calls this a case of the narrowsightedness and injustice of transphobia and misogyny.

Moreover, groups like Metro Manila Pride have expressed their condemnation of the incident. Metro Manila Pride cited that the case of Awra is the primary reason why there is an urgent need to swiftly pass the SOGIE Equality Bill into law, and mandate the local governments to respond to the struggles of their constituents. Safe spaces still remain to be an urgent necessity in the status quo because of the lack of established policies and the abuse of power of people in authority.

The country ended the Pride month with a painful remembrance of how our people in power utilize their authority and instigate abuse against the members of the LGBTQIA+. This is a reminder of why we need to emancipate people regardless of their sexual orientation, gender identity and expression beyond the bars of the abuse of power of the people in authority. But until there is a handicap between how police officers should treat their constituents over how they have treated them regardless of their SOGIE, the call for the reconstruction of the police force and the passage of the SOGIE Equality Bill continues.

un Bearable Bruised Marcos

No populace would cry in agony if the politicians most Filipinos elected give remedies to what pain they were complaining for. One year after the oath-taking of Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos, Jr. as the 17th President of the Philippines, many things have happened, but not with the “Bangon Bayan Muli,’— his slogan campaign, drawing enormous enticement to the Filipino citizenry. With five years left in his tenure, Philippines is no way getting better nor the poverty that the populace face assuage— contrary to what he promised in his first State of the Nation Address.

The status quo of self-rated food poor households continues to challenge what the present ruling is doing to ease the burden of poverty-stricken Filipinos. In the third quarter of 2022—Marcos’ first three months in the highest post, 49% or 12.6 million Filipino families considered themselves poor, as released by Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey. This has significantly risen to 51% or 12.9 million households in the fourth quarter of 2022. The first quarter of 2023 revealed 51% or 14 million households, rating themselves as poor.

Moreover, the son of the late dictator boarded overseas trips— eight times in his first seven months in Malacanang to seek profiles and entities that would invest in our country. However, these trips were deemed as futile, because if they are not, we do not need the passage of the Maharlika Investment Fund (MIF) —the first in history sovereign wealth fund, optimizing national funds through generation of returns to back the BBM administration’s economic goals. Sure, MIF is promising to other countries, but with the Philippines’ in a great constrained budgetary environment worsened by the global plague, this a right measure in a wrong time. The MIF will exclude government corporations and agencies that provide for both social security and public health insurances from contributing to and investing in the Fund. This exclusion encompassed GSIS, SSS, Pag-IBIG, OWWA, PhilHealth, and PVAO. The allegation that the MIF

will only feed the starving crocodiles was not beaten as the bill passed the final reading in the Senate, in a hasty pace.

In the media landscape, the Marcos government vows to protect the freedom of journalism. With the catapulted attacks and killings to Filipino media personnels, the light at the end of the tunnel of journalistic independence seemed to be a far-fetch dream. According to the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines at Center for Media Freedom and Responsibility, 75 cases of media attacks have been recorded since BBM started his presidency. In fact, this has surpassed the 41 cases annually of the Duterte administration. Red cards have also become rampant during the 2022 campaign sorties. Bagwis, the official student publication of this university, did not escape the nets of red-tagging after posting publication materials during the golden anniversary of the horrible Martial Law. Nevertheless, the publication has remained sturdy with its core values to amplify the voices, defend freedom, and publish truth.

Despite these proofs speaking volume on the lapses of the administration, his Vice President Sara Duterte expressed her compliment to BBM on his first year in office. These words of lady Duterte are nothing but forthrightly ignoring the reality the population has navigated through—eating meals three times a day becomes barely when it should not be. The promises of BBM during elections were all clear—crystal, but not the fulfillment of his sweet oaths to the public.

The inks we shaded last national elections dictated for what the Philippines has traversed in the past year— the names we circled have begun scribbling the country’s today and its daunting future. Perhaps, it would be too early to judge Marcos Jr.’s performance just yet for his fanatics, but for Juans who did

not vote solely for names, this one year of his incumbency is a fog through which we already had a glimpse of what has in store for the Philippines in the next five years. Not even a shadow of Bangon Bayan Muli transpired, only the salts that sprinkled to the unhealed bruises of the economy inherited from the past ascendancy. A best service of leaders to Filipinos is strongly called for. Now, we can only pray for clear and effective band aids to alleviate the lives of Filipinos because today, life in the motherland, especially for those in the pedestal, is unbearable.

Entering college was fast paced for most students. With the existence of the pandemic, it was a sudden transition, especially for batches 2020-2021 and 2021-2022. It hindered the students from experiencing easy college academic development.

With college being the last four years of academics for most courses, students tend to aim for serious engagement and achieve a passing grade. However, although helpful and thankful for the option and opportunity of alternative learning, peak personal development is achieved slower than before.

Nevertheless, as of year 2022, everyone was once again given the opportunity to learn in a face-to-face environment. What does that mean for students?

A graduation redemption.

Here in Mindanao State University –General Santos City, on June 14, 2022, held its 43rd Commencement Exercises at the MSU Quadrangle. There, 3,111 students –graduating classes of 2020, 2021, and 2022, marched towards commencement. Despite the unfavorable weather, the graduates received their diplomas with drenched togas, but most importantly, with heavy smiles.

A year later and it’s another batch of graduates, from class 2022-2023. The 44th Commencement Exercises, with the theme, “The MSU General Santos: Celebrating Golden Years of Pursuing Academic Excellence, Creating Champions of Peace and Development,” is to be celebrated on July 20, 2023, at the university Quadrangle. With graduates graced with the opportunity to learn one last year face to face, what will they look back the most from their bumpy academic journey?

Several interviews were conducted before the respective pre-commencement exercises of the colleges. The graduating students were asked how eventful their college life was, what they will miss the most from the

university, and what to look forward to after graduating as a MSUan survivor.

“Oneofthememorablemomentsfor meduringmytimeonthecampusisthe Intramurals2022,theIntramuralsafter thepandemic,”exclaimed a senior of the Marketing Management course, under the College of Business Administration and Accountancy. What made it magical, according to him, was everyone’s excitement through screams and cheers of their respective college chants. He mentioned the event’s highlights: the cheer dance competition, the torch lighting, and the beauty and flair of both the fireworks and music that played alongside.

“Formeandmypeers,itwasthelast intramurals.”Headded.“Tothisday,itgave megoosebumps,makingmeproudthatI wasanMSUan.”

A fourth-year student from the College of Social Sciences and Humanities under the History department, said that the Intramurals during their freshman year was the most memorable too. For them, it was the grandest and most awaited event as an enrollee of MSU. “Aside from friends, I will surely miss the overrated pastils, tornadoes of dust, our kiosk, the heatwave, and the unending events.”

Another graduating student from the same course and college answered that he will miss the students. He emphasized that the university stands out from other Mindanao schools because of the distinct culture of the students enrolled in MSU-GSC. He answered similarly to his fellow graduate, about what he will miss the most: “the unexpected gatherings in the field, mini sandstorms, the famous and affordable pastil in the woods –will always hold a special place in my heart.”

As an MSUan, one was molded to fight in order to survive. With that in mind, when asked what to look forward to after the transition, answers of all were synonymous to one word: grateful.

“Ilookforwardtothedoorsofopportunities andbeingabletoovercomeanychallenges orobstaclesbecauseIamaMSUSurvivor.I considermyselffortunate–whenIleave theuniversity,IwilltaketheknowledgeI gainedwithme.Ican’twaittotellmyfuture studentsaboutmyexperiencesasaformer MSUan.”

All students of MSU have encountered different challenges – which then led to their academic development. One may say that it is, and will be, a hard journey, especially under a well-known university, yet the University has produced graduates of exemplary nature every year. With seniors now entering a new chapter, they wonder too about the developments the next generations are to achieve.

A senior high school graduate of the same year acknowledged the upcoming changes, specifically the friendships and the people surrounding them. They stated an advice from a senior, “She told me to brace myself, because college is literally survival of the fittest.”

A classmate of theirs exclaimed his excitement and anxiousness for the transition, saying, “I am looking forward to the new people that I will be surrounding myself with.” They also mentioned advice from a faculty teacher. “College is a pool of various experiences. Know that you are not alone and would meet people who are willing to help you every step of the way.”

Bit by bit, one may realize it’s not just for the goal of “finishing,” but appreciating the hardships – acknowledging the fact of survival, embracing the new environment and knowing which real roads to take – that college will be both slow yet short, fast yet bumpy, and even tiring yet rewarding.

Regardless, to the university’s Iskolar ng Bayan, take your time. Take it day by day. You’ll be surprised, as one day, you’ll be the one looking back – hoping for a one last reminisce, yet ecstatic for the future.

EMBRACING THE NOTION: LEAOVE THE PHILIPPINES

In a perplexing move that left Filipinos intrigued, the Department of Tourism recently bid farewell to the iconic slogan It’s more fun in the Philippines and introduced a humdrum replacement Love the Philippines. This decision has provoked questions and debates as the change patently signifies a disconnect from the country’s realities highlighting the deep-rooted issues of injustices, inequality, and corruption. By abandoning a slogan that celebrated the lively spirit, charm, and the pronounced fun in the country, the government just seems to imply that the fun has sadly vanished from the Philippines.

For over 11 years, the erstwhile slogan “It’s more fun in the Philippines” encapsulated the essence of the country’s radiating joy, warmth, and the inviting spirit of its people. It was a beacon of hope for the struggling tourism industry, enticing millions of international visitors to its shores. This had successfully positioned the Philippines as an attractive and exciting destination that ultimately bolstered the economy and created numerous jobs. It is indeed the country’s integral part proudly embraced by Filipinos who take pride in showcasing the diverse wonders of the archipelago to the world.

The Department of Tourism justifies its decision to change the slogan by claiming that it aims to promote the country’s tourism offerings beyond mere fun. Tourism Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco argued that the influx of international visitors, reaching the annual target for the year 2022 in just six months, warranted the change. But clearly, this reasoning falls flat when we consider the countless problems that persist within Philippine society. It is a mockery to replace a slogan that embodies joy and excitement with one that demands love while disregarding the ongoing corruptions, injustices, etc. that plague the nation.

Furthermore, this change is actually not the first attempt to revamp the Philippines’ slogan. In 2017, former Undersecretary Kat de Castro voiced similar concerns suggesting that the existing slogan failed to attract tourists from Europe and the United States. Evidently, their attempts to find a more appealing tagline have gone astray that led to the current uninspiring choice.

The rebranded campaign “Love the Philippines” is said to reflect Filipinos’ resilience and growth. But to romanticize these promising traits is to just neglect the government’s imbecility. It feels more like a futile endeavor to cover up the stains and red in the grounds of the country. Their actions, or lack thereof, in addressing the pressing issues have only fuelled the disenchantment of its citizens. Instead of unveiling the best of the Philippines, they are just exposing the worst –the blatant misuse and funnelling of funds, lack

of creativity, and the straight up negligence and incompetence.

Adding fire to the fuel, the recent campaign video released by the Department of Tourism has caused an uproar among Filipinos. With a staggering budget of 49 million pesos, the video has shamelessly utilized stock images and videos from other countries, revealing a sense of foolishness and lack of creativity within them. It is clearly an insult to the vast wealth of breathtaking natural wonders, welcoming cities, and unique cultural heritage we have right here. This is needless to say a blatant display of corruption and a slap to those who still have hopes in this dying country.

However, despite all these messes, a typical Filipino being known as resilient and compassionate might just choose to shy away the fluttering red flags and still love the country. Or perhaps because them being handed an empty plate of opportunities due to the country’s sloppy and broken system puts them in a Hobson’s choice—to choose to suffer in a country they only have. Between to love and leave the Philippines, and if only Filipinos are to wake up with a clear and rational mind ensued by a fair, trustworthy, and equal governance, not a single doubt every Juan will desire the latter.

So, why change? It seems like the authorities are merely hiding behind a shallow rebranding to distract us from the harsh realities and horrors we face daily. They have chosen to turn a blind eye, sweeping everything under the rug, hoping that this feeble attempt will drastically wash away all the societal issues we face. Filipinos deserve better. THE PHILIPPINES DESERVE MORE. We don’t need a new slogan; we need genuine efforts to address the root causes of our problems and create actual and meaningful changes. We demand honesty, accountability, transparency, and not some flowery words that do not noticeably generate tangible improvements. Until these underlying problems are acknowledged and effectively addressed, it is difficult to embrace the notion of loving a country that seems to have lost its way.

Hinahabing Pangarap

Matatag! May paninindigan!

THE ISKO RESONANCE: Relating Taylor Swift’s songs with the MSUan life

The well-known singer-songwriter Taylor Swift has made an indelible mark on the music industry with her emotional lyrics as well as relatable storytelling. Beyond the number-one singles and memorable melodies, Swift’s record digs into subjects that go much beyond music. We examined in this article how Taylor Swift’s songs have a powerful impact on our understanding of politics, independence, education, and personal development. Taylor’s music goes beyond simple amusement, referring to the shared experiences and emotions of her listeners as she navigates the ups and downs of academic life, forges ahead into the unknowns of post-graduation freedom, and even tackles serious political issues. Beneath the melodies she creates, there lies a familiar resonance with the MSUan life.

ALL TOO WELL

“And you call me up again just to break me like a promise / So casually cruel in the name of being honest,” one might remember and relate to this song as a GEC subject promises to never give a dos, but juxtaposes in your academic portal otherwise.

Students who have felt the crushing loss of obtaining a failing mark might relate to Taylor Swift’s powerful ballad “All Too Well.” This moving song beautifully expresses the initial optimism and promise in the connection between a professor and a student, only to be dashed when expectations are not satisfied. Listeners can identify with Taylor’s realistic description of her loss as she explores the anguish and self-examination that come after earning a low mark. “All Too Well” serves as a helpful reminder that failures may be transformative chances for learning and development. It inspires students to reconsider their approaches, ask for help when necessary, and persevere in their academic endeavors.

“I’m a crumpled up piece of paper lying here

‘Cause I remember it all, all, all...”

MISS AMERICANA & THE HEARTBREAK PRINCE, AND ONLY THE YOUNG

I remember the May 2022 elections on how most MSUans my day-ed on their Facebook and Instagram stories: “The game was rigged, the ref got tricked / The wrong ones think they’re right / You were outnumbered, this time.”

The songs “Miss Americana” and “Only the Young” from Taylor Swift’s later albums serve as anthems for political consciousness and civic action. These songs have a universal message even though they don’t directly mention

Ferdinand Marcos or Philippine politics, but the lyrics, “And the big bad man and his big bad clan / Their hands are stained with red / Oh, how quickly, they forget” seem to fit otherwise.

“Miss Americana” is a rallying cry, warning listeners to be aware of the hazards that charismatic and dictatorial politicians may provide. Similar to this, “Only the Young” encourages young people to speak out, express their concerns, and actively influence the destiny of their nation. These songs can act as a constant reminder to be watchful, aware, and involved citizens in Philippine politics, encouraging change and holding authorities responsible.

From Miss Americana, “It’s you and me, that’s my whole world...” and from Only the Young, “Only one thing can save us / Only the young”.

CLEAN

“Ten months older, I won’t give in / Now that I’m clean, I’m never gonna risk it,” as much as this relates to addiction, it’s the juxtaposition of the MSUan lifestyle, the wave of Casa Mia and tipsier Sentro nights, that depicts the MSUan life.

Shifting gears, “Clean” tackles the struggle against addiction and dependence, resonating with people who use liquor as a stress-reduction strategy. The reflective lyrics and soaring melodies of the song represent the process of letting go of bad habits and discovering inner strength to mend. “Clean” offers comfort and hope to those trying to overcome addiction as Swift sings about the value of letting go and breaking free from unhealthy behaviors. It serves as a reminder that even in the face of trying circumstances, seeking treatment and starting down a path of self-discovery and well-being is achievable.

“I think I am finally clean.”

YOU’RE ON YOUR OWN KID

And when we finally wear our Sotra togas, Taylor Swift’s “You’re on Your Own Kid” perfectly describes the mix of emotions that come with newly gained independence as graduation approaches. The lyrics of “You’re on Your Own Kid” seem to strike our collegiate resonance on transitioning as a full adult, realizing the weight of our diplomas and degrees. The song encourages graduates to embrace their freedom and face the challenges that lie ahead by embracing the joy and anxiety of transitioning into adulthood. Swift’s motivational quotes serve as a reminder that, despite the ambiguity of the path, we have the courage and power to make our own decisions and shape our destinies.

“You’re on your own, kid / yeah, you can face this.”

Songs by Taylor Swift represent a range of events and feelings that she experienced as her career as a musician developed. Swift’s music never fails to move fans to their core. From the frustration of academic failure in “All Too Well” to the call for political engagement in “Miss Americana” and “Only the Young,” the journey of overcoming addiction in “Clean,” and the exploration of newly discovered independence in “You’re on Your Own Kid,” her music continues to speak to listeners on a profoundly personal level. Her ability to convey universal themes and feelings through her music solidifies her status as a musician, melodizing straight to her audiences’ minds and hearts.

And it’s here that we find our Isko resonance.

Passion is not Enough

Mindanao State University – General Santos City (MSU-GSC) has long been regarded as a cradle of academic excellence, producing outstanding graduates. It’s an institution that advocates for affordable education without compromising on quality. Naturally, students are drawn to become esteemed MSUans. Not only for the academic-centered individuals but so as the athletic prospects thinking that the institution also has robust support for their varsity program — or so they thought.

Varsity Captain Nissy Kyle Duarte expressed dismay about the lack of support that the Futsal team received. “I know that not all (players) on our team are financially privileged,” stated the AB Filipino athlete. “It gives us a hard time coping up especially in every event that we tend to join.” She added, while retracing the recent T’nalak Festival’s Futsal Tournament last July 2, where they felt the inequality in opportunities despite representing MSU’s pride, lacking a coach, and covering expenses from their own pockets.

Another football varsity player, Niel Zsun John Vega, also voiced his concerns about the insufficient equipment they experience. “We are struggling especially on training because of the lack of equipment that are essential to us athletes,” asserted Vega. “During tune up games, it is observable that our opponents, which have all the equipment needed in their school, are far better in terms of conditioning,” the freshman footballer expressed.

During the Hinabi Sports and Cultural Encounter last April 26, the MSU Basketball Varsity team had to wear their own college sports uniforms due to the absence of university jerseys. Brix Jerzyl De wla Cruz of the Varsity team brooded when they looked like Christmas decors during the encounter. “Seeing other teams wearing their school jerseys was really a slap in our faces,” proclaimed Dela Cruz.

Despite financial hurdles, the varsity players persist with the passion they hold for their beloved sports. However, passion alone is not enough. Enacting training was a challenge as the varsity players had limited access to proper equipment. “We lack will during training since we never really had it properly,” stated Duarte. Even with talented prospects joining the institution, their ability to reach their full potential is hindered.

“Investing in something that is beneficial to others isn’t wasted money. Given that we live in a world surrounded by sports, why should we not prioritize sports?,” remarked Vega. It would be valuable for the institution to express support for the sports varsity community, motivating athletes to succeed by honing their skills. It’s time to break the perception of MSU solely as an academic-centered institution and explore possibilities of our athletes excelling and bringing pride to the university in the sports field.

Amidst the

disappointment experienced by the varsity community, they find solace in the gradual change taking place.

“An example to that (change) is the upcoming basketball tournament in the campus, wherein alumni will be playing the current varsity team,” Dela Cruz remarked in satisfaction. The visible support from Chancellor Usman Aragasi, who promotes sporting events throughout the academic year, instills gratitude among the athletes, which the sophomore athlete was glad about, as it boosts the players’ morale and attracts future athletes knowing the institution provides support to its athletes.

Financial support remains lacking, leaving gaps in our athletic landscape that dampen the condition, motivation, and will power of our athletes in which the university could bridge. Fortunately, Chancellor Aragasi is gradually recognizing the potential of MSUans in the field of sports. While the athletes appreciate the ongoing changes, it’s not yet enough. The athletes deserve appreciation, as passion alone is sometimes not enough to strive, the university must also do its part.

MSU-Gensan 1st Chancellor’s 7-aside Football Festival itinampok; 38 na koponan, nakiwili

“Camaraderie and Friendship in all of Mindanao.”

“I’m very thankful for the people behind who organized this. This is part of the goal of the University, as a way of bonding through camaraderie and friendship with all the people of Mindanao,” saad ni Aragasi.

“As of now, we’re trying to have an engagement collaboration with a group who have expertise in particular sports,” mungkahi pa nito.

Dagdag nito na, “We want to come up with a way to level up these students without sacrificing their academics.”
