Steven Bailey, you may have noticed, has slipped under the skate-dar and mysteriously smoke-bombed all of skateboarding media as a whole. However, he still shreds when he finds time to step on his board in between managing the family´s avocado farm north east of San Diego. Well, I unearthed Bailey, and took a trip with him and Brandon Perelson to skate some Baja pools. Brandon is a ripper of all terrain and will destroy any transition he sets his wheels on. If you´ve seen him skate WSVT in San Diego, you know what I´m talking about. We met at Washington St. in San Diego to start our journey to Mexico. The border is just a stones throw from SD but we decided to take the crossing a little east and go to Tecate first. So half an hour or so later we got to the Tecate border crossing and bonafide Mexican…. tourists. When you cross the border you enter a different world, even the smell seems to be different although you´re just a minute away from Los Estados. The roads are rougher, the dogs hungrier, and hopefully, the pools emptier.

Brandon Perelson - backside air into the shallow end

A lot of the Mexican pools are different from the ones in California. The first pool to be bombarded was square and had perfect transitions (though, no vert) and no coping. The deepend was amuck with tires and wood in it, but we carved around it and hit the shallow end walls for tricks. Bailey and Brandon adapted quickly and did some rad tricks like ollies, airs, inverts, grinds and handouts. As the sun was setting it was time to hit the road to go to Rosarito where we had planned to stay the night. Getting on the freeway was not that easy. It was a toll road you could get off, but not on. A philosophical view of the Mexicans, I suppose. Luckily, we believe in a freeway both directions! We found some scrap wood to help us drive over the spikes (you know, the ones that blow your tires up when you drive the wrong direction) safely. Sketchy, but pretty much the only way to do it. Before checking into the hotel we got some food at a restaurant on the way. Brandon and Bailey enjoyed the local cuisine, whereas I couldn´t resist the special offer and opted for pizza. 2 for 1, Si! The hotel was right next to the beach and the next morning we had a nice breakfast with a beautiful view.

That day, we were off to check out this square pool that had pretty tight transitions. Turns out the corners were not carveable, grinds nearly impossible, and it seemed like somebody (probably a bored hobo with a chisel, a bad combo) had chipped off a layer of plaster/ concrete so the tiles were sticking out underneath the coping. But Bailey and Brandon, being rad, found some cool lines. The pool was located in a pretty sketchy area, so we split. Next stop was another square that was similar to the first pool but was bigger and clean. It was located in the back of a restaurant/ bar. Bailey had been there before and at that time, the owners were cool with skating the pool. This time there was nobody around to ask for permission, so we just went for it. Sadly, after 15 minutes, we hit the road to avoid swarms of cartels, helicopters, and ’85 Chevy Blazers being activated somewhere in Mexico. But it was a damn good 15 minutes that made us very hungry for some tacos. We hit a taco stand next to the road and had some delicious fish and shrimp tacos before heading back to San Diego.

Overview

Crossing the border from Mexico to the US at the Tijuana crossing can be a nightmare: it took us at least two hours of waiting in line. Luckily, the border patrol officer checked us and ignored my two day old smuggled-in pizza (remember 2 for 1), sprinkled with white powdery…Parmesan cheese. Giant thanks to Bailey and Brandon and the Mexican people for the rad trip.

With

an amazing spotlist and crew, rad sessions and good times ensued. Spots were conquered, villages plundered such as a DIY backyard pool in Vista, the Guaca Bowl and Pala square. Kyle Berard, can skate anything and knows the right spots and is friendly to the Nordic peoples. Like any Nordic warrior would, Jan Olson and Johnny were hijacking the most runs and skating like it was their last day at every spot. After a day with tons of skating, pillaging, and plunder, we decided to light it all on fire and burn!‌ BBQ’d chicken and steaks. Thanks to Kyle and Sarah from Vista for the amazing day!

Interview with the Creepy Creeps

Hey guys give us a short intro of the Band. The creepy creeps consist of a 4 piece band: the Creepture, Dr.Creepenstein, Dia De Los Creep, and Creepula~ we also are always seen with none other than SIR GRAVEE, our luchador super creep!, we have also been spotted to have a saxophone playing CREEPANZIE at times! Where are you from? How did you meet? We are all from california, the drummer and i have been friends since hi school, the keyboardist we met soon after, and we formed 14 years ago, right when we met the bassist! What´s your style of music? We actually have a rather unique style of music as we are not a surf/garage band but rather a brutal band that consists of both genres! we come from a background of west coast power violence, surf, exotica, punk. noise etc! so we are not actually a traditional outfit` 2 of us helped start THE LOCUST back in 95 ish~ nonetheless our live show is like no other to be seen!!

Jaeson, who are your 5 favorite skaters? JM: Xavier Manzanares (the brother of Jaeson, who himself is INSANELY good at skateboarding), Raybourne, Jon Morgan, Frank Shaw, Kowalski What is on your ipod? JM: Ghoul, Cannabis Corpse, Hank III Do you have any sponsors? JM: Bacon/Unheard guys flow me boards. Jaeson had a shitty summer last year. On his inaugural tour with the Unheard team, he broke his ankle two weeks in, then broke his wrist and afterwards broke his radius/ulna while wearing a wrist guard to protect the already busted appendage. However, all bad things come in threes, so perhaps this is his year to shine. He is still very young and will be going on tour again this summer to Montana with the Bacon dudes. Expect ripping and more ripping. To check out Jaeson and Taylor skating, go to the FTC blog and the Bailgun blog for video, an extended interview with Taylor, and even more photos. A giant shout out goes to Taylor and Jaeson for the interview, Unheard for supporting Jaeson, to Andy at Launch, and to FTC city parks for letting the kids skate. Postscript: Jaeson broke him arm and required surgery while trying to shoot some last minute photos for this article. Get better soon, buddy!

Your music is pretty surf inspired. Do you surf or skate? What´s your musical influences? Being that all of us are from Cali, we do emerge out of the culture, a couple of us surf and skate, but we are all cut from this cloth, so it is our nature. The Creepy Creeps shows are always pretty wild with a lot of dancing going on and you´re wearing suits and masks on stage, isn´t that like super hot? We have always played in costume and yes its extremely hot, but thats what we do ! we have also always had go go dancers! we have gone through a few but the family is strong now ( just the way we like it) with SHE CREEP and CREEP-O-HAUNTUS. Any favorite places you played at? Or places you wanna play? Any cool tour stories? What kinda music/stuff inspires you? We have been extremely fortunate to play with pretty much the gnarliest acts around BAD BRAINS, THE DAMNED, THE DICKIES, AGENT ORANGE, THE AGGROLITES, FLOGGING MOLLY ROCKET FROM THE CRYPT, AND THEN EVEN…. ROBERT PLANT (LED ZEPPELIN) AND FAITH NO MORE, and shit tons more!!!! 14 years of those kind of shows!!! We are very inspired by all sorts of music~ we each have a little bit to bring to the table so all genres are appreciated by the creeps! the more obscure the better.

Dave you have a huge record collection, how do you find all those rad records that nobody else seems to know? I have been collecting music for most of my life, and CREEPULA , also has a much more insane collection, but we pretty much scower the earth finding precious artifacts of vinyl, and get stoked when they actually tear ass! my friend Alex who has a lot to do with mississippi records sends me a lot of trippy records! as well!! You have a small skate bowl at your house, any good or memorable session there? The bowl rips, people skate from time to time, it is small so it is a bit sketchy! one of my favorite moments was carving over my son Wolf without him knowing and he launched his board at me! hehehehe, he’s 8! just recently Steve and Neil were over for SAND practice, and Neil did and invert to fakie on a board that the bearings were seazed! thats pretty gnarly! that dude SCREECH came over years ago with Mikey Ratt~ that guy may have been the craziest in there thus this far?! What are you guys into when not playing in the Creepy Creeps? Any other band projects or other stuff? We have another band CREEPXOTICA which is all of our music, but done in an EXOTICA/ BOSSA NOVA style also available on DIONYSUS records. When not in the creeps or creepxotica i play with Steve Claar and Neil Blender in a band called SAND~ now thats another story!!!!

We

met at Ozzi´s around noon, took a quick look at the Ridiculous Pool in his backyard that was waiting for us after skating some other spots, and hit the road. Crew: Ozzie, Riverside Shawn, Cam Dowse, Simon from OZ, Walt and Deven. The first pool was the `Gorilla Pool´ only a couple blocks from his house. Every pool is different, there are a million shapes and styles. This one featured a loveseat, a pocket on the left shallow end and stairs on the right. Justifiably, the Gorlilla got mo-murdered with Mute airs and fast lines by Ozzie, grinds and loveseat rocks by Cam, grinds by Simon, FS rocks in the shallow by Deven. On the schedule: more pools. We took of to the next pool 15 minutes down the road. Shaped entirely different, this guy was two pockets opposite of each other, the right one contained a loveseat. The deep end cupped a little water, but with some buckets to drain and old t-shirts to dry, we were skating in minutes. Riverside Shawn did lien to tails, Cam and Simon slash grinds, and Walt rock ´n rolled into the deepend. Best for Last: the Ridiculous Pool. This is just ridiculously good. a right hand kidney with with pool the La Kantera skatepark hasIt´s a long history perfect transitions, nicewith bullnose coping kidney and it also some in the Bask skate scene it´s famous poolhas that sits stairs atop on the left wall centered from deep to shallow as a curious of a beatiful beach. I met Zach this spring before I flew back home to Germany. He didn’t really talk; he was just annihilating T’s pool. Actually, I thought he was really dumb or a mute. Turns out, he is neither. Zach recently finished his Bachelors in Anthropology in South Carolina and did the logical thing: move to Denver. Since then, he has pillaged the scene with his insane ability to DESTROY all of the gnarly terrain the city has to offer, especially pools. Zach is super cool and really inspiring to watch skate. Beware of this dude, you will be seeing much more of him in the future. I caught up with him at his mom’s house while he was watching a movie….. Hey Zach. I don’t have a recording device, so I have to write our conversation by hand. That means that everything you say is going to be misconstrued, taken out of context, blown out of proportion, and reworded to make you sound like an ass. You cool with that? Hah! sure. Where are you from? New Jersey, Ocean township. The Jamaican Island, got it. Must be hard adjusting to harsh winter climes such as Colorado. Why did you move to Colorado? I moved from Charleston SC, where I went to school for anthropology. I graduated over a year ago, but I was just working

Interview: Lenore Sparks

before I left for Denver. I came out to Denver because I just wanted more shit to skate. Charleston has the raddest scene, but there is not so many spots. I saw pics of Devner online and there was just so much shit. It ended up being everything I imaged, but even more! It’s so epic, and then there’s legal weed. Was your first day in Colorado at Whiskey-T’s bowl when I met you? Was that with Taylor? Taylor met me in Arvada park the very 1st day, and he immediately took me to Whiskey’s. That’s a good first day! Joey gave me Taylor’s number- I had basically a blind date with Taylor. He shot some fotos, put them on instagram. People were down. You are “the new guy” but you are pretty popular already. When you went on summer vacation, it was high drama on facebook. People missed you. Are you sticking around or is Colorado just a pawn in your scheme to move to Oregon or Cali, like everyone else? I am committed to Denver for at least a year, but I haven’t spent winter there yet- we will see. I am going West for vacation or skate trip maybe. I’ve been on tour out West with Bacon. It was sick out there, but going out there and living from skating is crazy. I mean getting paid to skate is super high stress- on tour for example, bowls are ok, but a street spot may not be your terrain. Then, at these spots you’re expected to rip and maybe you can’t – but your getting paid – it’s a war.

Ă–rl y Interview with JĂźrgen Horrwarth about skating and making cake.

Angelique and J端rgen

Cafe Photography by gerdrieger.com

Interview by Eric Muesahm

Hi Jürgen, give us a short intro about you and Örly Cafe Hi, I‘m Juergen Horrwarth. I‘m a pro skateboarder with a (not so) little side project called Örly Café... How did you get the idea to start a cafe? It started as a joke and became brutal reality. No, but really it all started with a few ideas and inspirations partially written down with some additional sketches in a book.

Who´s involved in the project? It‘s my girlfriend and business partner Angelique who manages a lot and regulates service. Then the kitchen part I share with Julez, a friend of ours, where we make the yummy bits happen. What´s on the menue? What´s your favorite? We do a few selected international dishes like Eggs Benedict, English Brekkie, Canadian Pancakes etc. But also a wide variety of vegetarian and vegan choices on offer. If you‘re into cake and sweet things, we constantly bake our own recipes, also considering the vegan family. My favourite creation might just be Eggs Benedict.

Ollie up into the tree at Mellow Park.

You do some of the cooking and baking yourself. Where do you get the recipes from? Yes, me make everything in house and for us it‘s the best way to quickly adapt to seasonal changes and eventual adjustments on the cake and smoothies sector. We had to just work out what we want to do and how to get there. It was more of an exciting journey of trying out and finding the best ways of how to make stuff. The harder part was to establish ways of how to make our food fast enough and in a constant quality. That requires a tightly organized system of production and attention to detail.

What´s up with skating? Do you find enough time for skating between cooking and running the cafe? Well, that is something I wish was a bit more easy to work out...but I really try to skate vert at least twice a week. If there was any good concrete in Berlin, I would certainly skate it lots. Any favorite new concrete parks you have skated lately? No, not really. Recently checked out the one in Bremen, bit that seems to me like some sort of weird experiment of how many oddly shaped things you can put into a small space, which has no flow. I‘m really hoping for Berlin to get a sick bowl soon! What´s the future plans for Cafe Örly and skating? It just keeps going. Barely get to rest, ever...Örly takes lots of work and dedication, but rewards for me are compliments from our guests and smiles we get. I really plan a trip to Australia again this winter, where I wanna skate a lot. Other than that, I wanna make a vert series happen for Germany next year and eventually combine it with bowl. We don‘t need transition events blended into street events just for alibi. It needs to be done properly!
