DEVONSHIRE HOUSE Built 1928. Reimagined 2009. Devonshire House is a classic pre-war residence offering one- to four-bedroom condominiums in the heart of Greenwich Village. Designed by architect Emery Roth, this historic building is a blend of traditional Italianate and English detailing, with elegant modern interiors by Victoria Hagan. These elements, combined with its quiet, central location just steps from eclectic shopping, dining, and culture, make Devonshire House a rare find.
“Devonshire House is one of New York’s newest contributions to more gracious living.” FROM THE ORIGINAL DEVONSHIRE HOUSE BROCHURE, 1928
Before there was Devonshire House, New York, there was Devonshire House, London. For almost two centuries the royal estate of the Duke of Devonshire “played a leading role in the social and artistic life of London,” wrote The New York Times in 1919. Nine years later, developer H.A. Hyman challenged eminent architect Emery Roth to design a Greenwich Village residence inspired by the Picadilly mansion. Roth responded both literally and figuratively. While the Devonshire family crest and other English period details embellish the façade and lobby, Roth also drew on Italianate motifs for the building’s unique masonry, giving it an eclecticism that mirrored the life of Greenwich Village.
RECENTLY REDESIGNED BY LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT EDMUND HOLLANDER, DEVONSHIRE HOUSE’S COURTYARD IS A CLASSIC EXAMPLE OF A PARTERRE GARDEN. GROUND COVER AND HEDGES ARE ARRANGED IN A SYMMETRICAL PATTERN AROUND A CENTRAL FLOWERBED ADDING SEASONAL COLOR. TWO STONE BENCHES, A SCULPTED BRICK MANTEL, AND A BLUESTONE WALKWAY ADD A TOUCH OF THE URBAN TO THE SCENE. EASILY ADMIRED FROM THE LOBBY AND APARTMENTS, THE GARDEN IS A SECRET OASIS EXCLUSIVE TO DEVONSHIRE HOUSE RESIDENTS.
Today, in addition to contemporary living spaces, Devonshire House provides modern amenities and services. A 24-hour doorman and resident superintendent offer convenient assistance. Cold storage is available for groceries, while a secure bike room and individual storage units provide vital extra space. A children’s playroom and fitness center give recreation space for families and individuals, with a landscaped rooftop terrace providing an outdoor retreat. From the lobby, residents can enjoy views of the traditional English courtyard garden.
“With Devonshire House, I like the idea of taking what’s old and undiscovered and making it a place you’d want to call home.” Victoria Hagan
Blending classical elements into modern designs is a hallmark of award-winning interior designer Victoria Hagan. She is at home working with a wide range of styles, bringing harmony to any juxtaposition through a sophisticated use of color, texture, and silhouette. “I like a space to be beautiful and livable. And always with a touch of the unexpected,” she says of her approach to every project, including Devonshire House.
“Victoria Hagan’s interiors defy quick categorization. They are neither strictly traditional nor strictly minimal—what they are is intelligent, classic, and calming.” Interior Design magazine upon naming Victoria Hagan to its Design Hall of Fame
Devonshire House’s living spaces are inviting and elegant. The main rooms and bedrooms are light-filled through custom Pella windows. Custom-designed millwork, including new crown and base moldings, adds a classic pre-war touch to the clean and modern settings. The white woodwork of the doors and cabinetry feature nickel-plated hardware from ER Butler & Co and contrast richly with the 4" white oak, Jacobean-stained flooring. Throughout each residence, built-in media and telecom connections accommodate the latest technologies. Larger homes also feature Bosch washers and dryers.
CLEAN, MODERN COOKING AND DINING SPACES EMERGE IN SHADES OF WHITE AND STEEL. THE CABINETRY IS CUSTOM–MADE WOOD AND GLASS AND FEATURES E. R. BUTLER & CO. HARDWARE. THE SUBZERO REFRIGERATOR AND BOSCH DISHWASHER COMPLEMENT THE CABINETRY, WHILE THE BRUSHED–STEEL WOLF RANGE AND HOOD PROVIDE A SLEEK CONTRAST. THE COUNTERS ARE TOPPED BY COMPOSITE GLASS AND SET AGAINST A MARBLE TILE BACKSPLASH WITH A GENEROUS WATERWORKS FARMHOUSE SINK FITTED WITH A POLISHED NICKEL GOOSENECK FAUCET.
“Our goal for Devonshire House was to design modern-day residences in keeping with the building’s natural flow and pre-war historic architecture.” ALAN ROSE, ARCT architecture pc

“Words like ‘paradise’ and ‘oasis’ frequently come up when talking to residents of Greenwich Village, a neighborhood of narrow streets, many cooled by trees and scented by potted flowers, of art galleries and sidewalk cafés on almost every corner.” Don Terry, The New York Times
Determined that “all sides and all parts of a building should be beautiful,” Roth was the first New York City architect to integrate rooftop water tanks into his design rather than leave them exposed. The quatrefoil Sculpted on doors, inscribed detail on the turret hous-

Though easily admired simply as a gem of Greenwich Village architecture, Devonshire House is also a vital part of Emery Roth’s city-wide legacy of significant buildings. From 1898 to 1948, the architect designed over 200 structures, essentially defining the early 20th-century skyline and granting it some of its most signature landmarks like The San Remo and The Beresford. While Devonshire House shares the distinctive towers and classical detailing that mark Roth’s more famous residences, today it is further distinguished by its now contemporary living spaces.
