The Intelligence of Heart

ver the last several decades a lot of research has been uncovered about intelligence. Previous ideas that intelligence was strictly a brain activity have been tempered with new perspectives. Rather than our intelligence lying solely within our head, it has recently been found that there is an important intelligence that lies within our heart. And some believe that heart intelligence is more impactful than head intelligence.

The heart will lead you to where you want to go in life.

When you follow the passion that lives within your heart you have greater joy and generally things just work out for you. You have put your heart intelligence to work.

Making that connection is one of the best things you can do for yourself. Here’s some ways to connect with your heart intelligence: Listen Your heart speaks through your inner voice. Set aside time to be silent and listen to yourself. This can be done by just sitting still and listening to yourself breathe. As you focus on your breathing and get more relaxed you will be able to ‘hear’ your heart speak through thoughts, feelings, memories, visions – different people receive their intelligence in different ways. Learn to ‘listen’ to how your heart speaks to you.

Respect Your Passion Your passion is reflected in your gifts and talents. What do you really love to do? Are you doing it? How often?

Whatever you are passionate about is what you will be happy doing on a day to day basis. When you do this you enable your heart to create its own language. The peace

and freedom that your heart will feel when it is connected to passion is the energy that drives you to success. Listen so you can find then respect your passion.

Trust the Process Once you learn to receive the message from your heart and give it respect, it will be time for you to learn to trust its. I also call it your inner or intuitive voice. Most of us have times when our voice is trying to tell us to do or not to do something and we don’t trust it. Therefore we find ourselves frequently saying “I know I should have…”.

How often do you say this? When you learn to accept that your heart has intelligence maybe you will accept that it communicates with you, just like your brain does. But the language of the heart is feelings, thoughts, ideas, hopes and dreams. Trust the language and allow it to lead and direct you.

Sometimes the only defect within ourselves is our unwillingness to be our self. When we are connected to our heart intelligence we have the greatest opportunity to know and be our authentic self.

Barbados is an island of the Lesser Antilles, 21 miles in length, as much as 14 miles in width and divided into 11 parishes. It is located at 13.4N, 15.4W. The island is situated in the western area of the North Atlantic Ocean and 100 kilometers east of the Windward Islands and the Caribbean Sea. Barbados is relatively flat with the exception of one major high point, Mount Hillaby, which measures approximately 1,115 feet or some 343 metres above sea level. The west coast of Barbados offers calm, clear water which is quite conducive to your many beach activities; while the east coast opens up beautifully to crashing waves and an environment that is more suited to sun bathing, walking, jogging, surfing and even meditation.

Barbados is awash with history, the arts, nightlife, fine dining, and even luxury living. Getting around the island is a ‘breeze’ (pun intended) as options are somewhat endless

The Diplomatic Academy of the Caribbean Takes Trade Diplomacy Training to Barbados

I

n a globalized world, small states can find it hard to punch above their weight in the global trade negotiation and diplomacy. In order to become a major player globally and secure a place at the international roundtable, the Caribbean must better equip itself. With this perspective, The Diplomatic Academy of the Caribbean at The University of the West Indies (The UWI) has partnered with the Shridath Ramphal Center for International Trade Law, Policy and Services to provide training for Caribbean diplomats and professionals in this area.

The partnered programme titled Small States in Trade Diplomacy will take place at The University of The West Indies, Cave Hill Campus in Barbados from April 20th to 24th 2015.

This will be The Diplomatic Academy’s 9th module, and is structured as a week-long intensive session that is practical, policy-relevant and Caribbeanfocused. It is designed for professionals in the public

sector such as personnel in the Ministries of Trade and Foreign Affairs and other related government agencies, international and regional organizations dealing with trade matters, and professionals from the private sector involved in business and trade negotiations.

The module comprises two components; the first is a two-day session on how to develop a multi-faceted trade and development strategy for the region, then the second component will focus on trade negotiations and provide practical skills and tips to participants. The week will end with a simulation exercise; a signature session of all modules hosted by The Diplomatic Academy. Three seasoned experts with combined experiences from several regional and international organizations will conduct the training. They are Neil Paul, Officer in Charge at the Shridath Ramphal Center and a specialist in trade policy-making, communications and development, Phil Rourke, Executive Director at the Center for Trade Policy and Law at Carleton University in Ottawa, who has more than 15 years’ experience in teaching and researching on trade and development issues and Dr Keith Nurse, the Executive Director of UWI Consulting Inc., World Trade Organization Chair and the former director of the Shridath Ramphal Center. Dr Nurse has also been an advisor to several regional and international governments and agencies and is a published author of numerous books and articles on globalisation and trade policy.

Since its May 2014 launch the Diplomatic Academy of the Caribbean has trained close to 300 persons including diplomats, government officials and public and private sector professionals from across the Caribbean region. Its initial training modules were held at The UWI’s St Augustine campus, but the Diplomatic Academy is now seeking to expand its reach in other Caribbean territories.

According to Professor Andy Knight, Director of the Institute of International Relations at The UWI, “The increasing number of actors involved in trade diplomacy means that small states have to work exceedingly hard to get their positions on trade and investment flows known, and they have to ensure that their trade representatives are well prepared to negotiate complex trade agreements to be successful.

So this module on trade diplomacy is designed to give the participants the type of skills that would help them punch above their weight bilaterally, regionally and internationally”.

The Diplomatic Academy of the Caribbean The Diplomatic Academy of the Caribbean is a joint project between The University of the West Indies (The UWI) through its Institute of International Relations and the Government of Trinidad & Tobago and its Ministry of Foreign Affairs. It is a global academy for Caribbean Diplomacy, the first of its kind in the region and provides learning and training to a cross-section of target groups and beneficiaries involved in international cooperation negotiations and transactions within the CARICOM region and beyond.

Tips for Teens and Adults: Release Negativity And Increase Self Esteem

H

ow do you feel about yourself? It can be measured in terms of Self Esteem. If you hate your looks or your actions or your surroundings or how you feel then you probably have low self esteem. While on the other hand having high self esteem doesn’t mean that you are arrogant or above everybody else. Treating yourself well, loving and respecting yourself, regardless of your defects is the true sense of high self esteem.

The life of a teen is very emotional, mainly because of their crazy hormonal activities, and also due to the fact that they are getting to see things in different

perspectives. They get puzzled and overwhelmed about all the changes in their lives like new challenges, situations and relationships which leaves them afraid and irritated. This kind of feelings can totally change the happy and energetic child.

Mood swings are not confined to teens only, adults too experience them. If our emotions are not released through the right channels then they can clog up our minds or our bodies and get us angry stressed and anxious, and spoil forthcoming situations.

Expressing emotions and dealing with emotional problems is not taught to the children and that is where the problem lies. You firstly are not taught this in school and secondly most of the adults don’t have formal training in how to release emotions beneficially, so there is no coaching for the children. This creates problem in the relationships and can also affect the self esteem of the teen and parents alike.

Frustration, anxiety, anger and humiliation are just some of the emotions teens’ experience. But now there are simple, fast effective and easy ways to get rid of these emotions.

The first thing is too search for a place and time where you can be alone for a while and where you can focus and wont be disturbed or get distracted.

Next you make a mental note of all the things that bother you. Let your inner mind and heart tell you what they are.

You don’t have to agree will all of the case, but keep your eyes closed and note the emotions that are generated.

Now take one emotion or issue at a time visualize it filling your entire body and then picture blowing all that emotion into a balloon. Essentially take the emotion out of your mind and body. One thing that you will observe is the changing color of the balloon while you blow your emotion into it. Because of the negative energy that you are blowing into it, it may change it color to brown or black. As soon as you are done filling the balloon, visualize yourself tying it and letting it float up into the sky. Continue in the same way, filling balloons, tying them and letting them go until you feel absolutely relaxed.

Allow yourself to feel peaceful.

Now when you look up into the sky you will see all those negative balloons. What you need to do is visualize them

coming together and forming a big, black cloud, and remember that you have pushed all your negative emotions into that cloud.

The next step is a little difficult but not impossible. You will have to forgive all of the people and circumstances involved in those negative emotions. Even the not so apparent ones have to be forgiven. Remember you are only hurting yourself by clinging on to your anger and resentment.

To move forward you will have to forgive yourself and let go of all the times you’ve been bad, made mistakes, been embarrassed and ashamed.

Once you do that and then look into the sky, visualize the bright and comforting and warm sun coming out and dissolving the entire cloud of negativity. Let go of all the negativity and feel the warmth, peace, comfort and love of the sun all over and within your body. Talk to yourself and say that your ok and that you love and accept yourself.

You will have to find something about yourself that your really value. Something like and act of kindness, a talent or skill, your strength, your love of animals, people, your intelligence, your sense of humor, your spirit. Stop for a moment that and really appreciate that essence of you.

Believe form within, that you are good and value yourself and accept yourself for it.

For this technique use your imagination to the fullest, use different color balloons, visualize blowing them up past their limits so that they pop and splat everywhere.

With the help of this technique you can improve you self esteem, balance your emotions, let go off the bad and negative energy.

us, I am a strong advocate for taking initiative and moving towards becoming more marketable in the workplace.

The one question that seem not to cross the minds of workers who have been employed for more than 8 years is "Am I still marketable?" The first step towards becoming marketable is to ask yourself how long have you been away from educating yourself in your area, you needs to know what are the latest trends in your area, what have been the major developments and break-through.

Caribbean Youth Environment Network

T

he CYEN is a non-profit, civil society, charitable body that focuses its resources on empowering young people and their communities to develop programmes/actions to address socio-economic and environmental issues. The CYEN programme aims at addressing issues such as poverty alleviation and youth employment, health and HIV/AIDS, climatic changes and global warming, impact of natural disasters/hazards, improvement in potable water, conservation and waste management and other natural resource management issues.

CYEN views youth as an important and critical development resource. It is dedicated to developing strategies to engage and facilitate their participation in the development process. CYEN defines young people as anyone within the 15-29 age group. However, it is supportive of the transitional approach to youth development, which is articulated by the World Bank and agencies within the UN System (World development Report, 2001; World Youth Report, 2005).

MISSION: The Caribbean Youth Environment Network is a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the quality of life of Caribbean young people by facilitating their personal development and promoting their full involvement in all matters pertaining to the environment and sustainable development. The organisation promotes education and training, Caribbean integration and community empowerment as tools to develop an ethic amongst young people that assists in the conservation and protection of natural resources within the Wider Caribbean.

VISION: The CYEN will be the leading youth environment and development network in the region responsible for creating an appropriate space for young people to participate in the design, development, implementation and promotion of new, progressive, equitable, innovative and sustainable environmental, economic and social development policies and programmes across the wider Caribbean.

MAY 2015 Caribbean Youth Environment Network continued

The Caribbean Youth Environment Network (CYEN) is a regional organisation whose membership comprises youth groups and individual youth. It aims to promote youth in the Caribbean to take positive action on issues related to environment and sustainable development.

CYEN is a registered non-profit and non-governmental charitable body (Registered Charity No.507 - Barbados) that has members and affiliates in fifteen Caribbean territories. Since its establishment in 1992, the Network has coordinated or participated in a number of activities and projects at the national, regional and international levels. Significantly, the Network has frequently sourced and financed short-term training scholarships for youth to attend leadership and other training courses. Beyond this the Network has been actively involved in advocacy as well as environmental education and public awareness programmes. CYEN frequently represents the position of Caribbean youth at regional and international meetings.

It is undoubtedly the largest youth environment network in the Caribbean. The motto of the Network is "Unity, Strength, Purpose".

CYEN is an associate member of the International Students Youth Movement for the United Nations (ISMUN). The Network is a member organization of the Caribbean Network for Integrated rural Development (CNIRD) and partners on occasions with the Caribbean Conservation Association (CCA). Beyond this CYEN is a member organization of the Caribbean Policy Development Centre (CPDC) and is a lead agency in the execution of the annual International Coastal Cleanup that is coordinated by Ocean Conservancy.

As of 31st July 2006, CYEN included 29 organisational members and 264 individual members across 16 Caribbean territories including; Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, British Virgin Islands, Dominican Republic, Commonwealth of Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, St. Kitts and Nevis, St, Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago. Affiliate diaspora members reside in Bermuda, Britain, Canada and the USA. The CYEN is governed by a Board of Management (BOM) that is headed by a Regional Chairman. The

BOM is comprised of National or Country Coordinators from the territories that have functional national chapters. National Coordinators are informed by members at the national level and in this manner national issues are brought to the attention of the BOM. At the national level Advisers help to guide the operations and activities. The BOM sets the policy and framework for the work plan of the CYEN. Programme and project execution as well as the day-to-day management of the Network are the responsibility of the Executive Coordinator.

THE BLESSING OF STICK-TO-IT-IVITY

T

he phrase Stick-to-it was coined by Walt Disney to represent the action of perseverance. The art of perseverance is such a valuable skill required when we are at our lowest or when the fruits of our labours are less than we had calculated or even when unimaginable curves and pitfalls become a reality. This is the perfect time to quit or relent on our plans and actions. So often we give into our emotions and are clouded by the realities of perceived failure. There are times in life when we feel that everything around us is collapsing.

Sometimes life falls apart and it is out of our control, and at other times, things go wrong and we know that it is our own fault. There will always be unexpected turns in our life but there is one thing can take us around the bends of failure and lead us to the path of success. That is perseverance.

Perseverance is defined as the state or quality of being insistent or persistent. Other qualities like being diligent and hard-working are also synonymous with this virtue.

On the contrary, antonyms like apathy, idleness, indolence, laziness and lethargy are counter-productive to the trait of perseverance or stick-to-it-ivity.

Perseverance demands that we persist in anything undertaken; maintain a purpose in spite of difficulty, obstacles, or discouragement and continue steadfastly.

One may ask, what is the point of committing to something that does not produce the desired result? Or why continue a relationship that does not produce happiness? Is it really practical to keep investing in something that doesn’t produce in the here and now? A devoted wife having committed to a miserable marriage for twelve years may feel that throwing in the towel may bring the peace, happiness and the fulfilment she desires.

A faithful father may decide that it’s time to walk away from the constant ridicule and bad-treatment he has endured all the while he devotedly provided the essentials for his wife and children. A disgruntled employee may become lethargic and indolent as he visualises the ideals he now lacks in his present job.

Why persevere when the odds are constantly stacking higher and higher. Are we trained in the art of perseverance, or do we give in to the natural gravitational law of quitting.

Though we may ponder or consider giving up long before we make it a reality, the fact is that once we quit, we stop. We stop trying, we stop caring, we stop feeling, we just stop. We stop believing in that which we once saw as a possibility. Napoleon Hill in one of his famous quotes says, “Most great people have attained their greatest success just one step beyond their greatest failure.” In Romans 5:4 we are told that perseverance produces character. As I study this statement, the physical structure of a male who endures the agony of exercise to build a colony of muscle tissue to represent his masculinity comes to mind. Oh how our jaws drop as we gaze at such a perfect figure yet what is obscured behind such a fascinating sight is the art of perseverance.

The art of body building is as rigorous as climbing and covering the Andes mountain range. It is through

perseverance that we are able to carve valuable muscle from the fatty tissues of our lives. As we work this virtue we will surely reap the results of our labour. Here are some steps on how to achieve success through perseverance: Step 1

Identify what it is you want to achieve.

Step 2 Educate yourself about your goal and plot a path to achieve it.

Step 3 Prepare yourself mentally and spiritually for successes, challenges and failures along the way.

Step 4 Start by faith, take the first step, no one ever succeeded by not trying and failure is guaranteed if we do nothing Step 5 When and if you fail, determine what caused you to fail, get up, re-strategise and try again.

Step 6 If you fail again, do not be discouraged if you make the same mistakes over and over again, go back to the drawing board, take a new approach and purpose in yourself to succeed.

Step 7 If you fail for the hundredth time, get over the failure quickly, don’t beat up on yourself, reassess your approach, take a look at other successes in the same area and try again. Understand why you failed and remember you are not a failure until you give up.

“Nothing beats a failure but a trial” is an old adage that represents the virtue of perseverance. We only fail when we fail to try. Whatever the results of our trials we would have gained valuable lessons and each lesson is a building block to our desired success. Mr Bertram Hall the owner of Popular Discounts, shared this with me when I sought his advice on a new project. “Never be defeated by the fear of failure, if you think it won’t work, do it quickly. Once you start you will make it work.”

These words have stayed with me and have been the back-bone to many successes in my life. I also encourage you to let the art of Stick-to-it-ivity decorate the challenges of your life and may this virtue propel you to the unimaginable realms of success, be it in your career, marriage, relationship, business or even the battle of a seemingly wayward child. Perseverance will transport you beyond the hurdles and challenges and ultimately grant you the pleasures of success.

hysique Pro Fitness Consultancy (PPFC) is a per sonal training business which was established in the year 1999 and caters to everyone from the professional person to the average housewife. Since the demand for this type of business is high Trainer - Jerome Greenidge sought to differentiate himself from all the other trainers plying their trade. EATING FOR THE CHISELED MID SECTION

I

want to devote this article to showing you that there are ways to trim your mid-section and lose weight easier than you think. This technique works and will continue to work no matter what new systems and gimmicks arise. You simply must first know what different kinds of carbs are and how the body reacts to each of them. Now the obvious foods that are high in sugar are mostly your processed food made by man in some factory and they range from doughnuts to your breads and special pastas. I must say though that they are special pastas now made from spinach and veg which are great for the body and taste great as well. Knowing how to eat carbs strategically is the key and enough activity to burn the sugar in the blood stream so it doesn't get stored as fat.

I keep writing about this because people keep asking about it and once people get it they don't have to worry about gaining weight in all the wrong places again. If you are planning to eat junk food that is food without much nutritional value then you can do any activity that raises your core temperature and causes a light sweat. An example of an activity that can cause a high temperature is burpees, jumping jacks, jumpers, vertical jumps or you can simply ask me a question on facebook. Let’s say you are planning a high carb evening and you know for a fact that you will be consuming this food do at least 25 burpees an hour and a half before or 50 jumpers as an example. After you have eaten the food you can have

a monster workout of a variety of bodyweight or dumbbell workout so that your body has no choice but to burn those calories as fuel.

My answer is you have to focus on nutrition and portion size much more. Unfortunately if you are overweight to begin with then in order to lose that weight and fast, attention will have to be given to activity in order to build lean muscle and force the body to burn calories. The person who is already in the correct weight class might be able to get away with no activity but after the age of thirty and the metabolic rate drops as a result of muscle loss weight gain might occur in 70 percent of people who don’t move. Only a few genetically blessed people can get this done. So to conclude this article, you need to move before and after to safeguard yourself from storing fat and if you don't want to move, a lot more attention will have to be paid to nutrition. But, eventually you might still gain if you are consuming the same amount of food you did in your twenties but with the loss of muscle mass in your latter years you will have to look at weight resistant workouts to aid in burning more calories.

Special Olympic World Summer Games comes off July 25 to August 2 2015. With that in mind I will share Tony Piontek’s story

ony Piontek has been a Global Messenger for Special Olympics Louisiana since 1998.

Piontek started with Special Olympics in 1989 and has competed in Aquatics, Unified Basketball, Bowling, Cycling, Track & Field, Unified Softball and Volleyball. At the Special Olympics World Games in 1995, Piontek won Multi Gold and Silver medals in Aquatics while representing Special Olympics Team USA. Piontek has also participated in officiating as an Aquatics athlete at the World Games and other non-traditional roles such as Public Relations and Athlete Training. He currently resides in New Iberia, Louisiana.

Q: Is there someone in your life, a parent or mentor, who has encouraged you to never give up and live your dreams?

R: In my family they always gave me this sentence to live up to your expectations and act in it. Whatever you do just remember, "You build up character, loyalty and friendship." He goes on to say “When I was officiating at the 1995 Special Olympics World Games we had two other events to go on the 200m and 100m freestyle. It was a wonderful experience to know we had the audience cheering on the athletes who were NOT going to give up and finish her/his race. It takes a lot of hope, love and joy to keep on going.”

Q: What does it mean to you to live your dreams?

How are you living your dreams in your life today?

R: Ever y day I see myself living my dr eams and expect the unexpected at any given time. Now when I am living my dreams and sharing this with people whom I care for it can be through scouting, by helping other kids who are tying a lashing together, to sitting on a Board of Review for an Eagle Scout, leading teens to be a better person as I assist them in becoming a better Christian, helping out with our Church with our Flower Bed Ministry or even help as a Eucharistic minister and serving for funerals. No matter what I am doing, I know I am encouraging myself to be a better person.

Coming To Terms With Mother Love

W

ith Mother’s Day, celebrated in most places around the world, have you come to terms with Mother Love?

Silence filled the room as I painfully watched my mother take her final breaths. During the seventy-four years that my mother lived, she always gave untiringly to me and to others. I feel blessed to have been so fortunate, for my mother was always my greatest supporter, an endless fountain of encouragement.

As the reality of my loss enveloped me on that cool January night, it was a Saturday, the 8th, the year 2005 was still brand new. Up until this point, 2005 seem filled with endless possibilities. That may have still been true, but I know that at the moment I could not imagine that my emotional wounds would ever heal; meanwhile I knew that as I know now that I must press on in divine purpose. While I sat there filled with despair listening to my mother gasping for air, I was also humbled by the knowledge that someone had loved me so unconditionally. My mother forever stood firmly beside me as I weathered storms wrought from poor choices, self-discovery and defining life lessons. I am fully aware that this is not always the case when it comes to mothers and their children.

I could not help but wonder if most people fully understand how necessary it is to find peace when it comes to the woman who gave them life. Coming to terms with the mother love in your life is fundamental to ultimately becoming comfortable with yourself, critical to being able to give and receive love; critical to your ultimate personal inner peace and your most public levels of professional success.

Your own evolution as a person will surely be stunted until you face all aspects of your relationship with your mother. Even in the best relationships some form of turmoil can exist. Failing to address these matters is a mistake. Refusing to do the work necessary to deal with your distress is not a good choice. You cannot thrive carrying this kind of unresolved emotional baggage around. It is difficult for both men and women to focus on their possibilities when he or she feels limited by family circumstances. Unresolved anger and nagging hurt steal dreams and shatter lives. In fact, one can end up virtually immobilized for years if mother dilemmas are not resolved. In fact, your attitude about “mother� influences you one way or another for a lifetime.

MAY 2015 You see it does not matter whether your mother abandoned or adored you. It does not matter whether she championed your dreams or channeled her own sorrow into your life. It does not really matter if she demonstrated her love daily or only gave you doses of affection when she was able to put her own agony aside.

No matter how tumultuous or terrific your relationship with your mother, no matter if you never knew your mother, little does it matter that you somehow always feel that your mother has made no effort to understand who you are. Coming to grips and accepting both the good and bad truths about your relationship with your mother is a key which can unlock your capacity to form healthy relationships throughout your life, and unleash your true potential.

Until you are able to realize that even though your mother may have given you her all, or perhaps at the other end of the spectrum, she gives you little or nothing; neither of these realities guarantee nor limit who or what you can become. Until you accept that maybe your mother did the best that she could, that she is loving you the best that she can, or that your mother relates to you as she was taught, you will remain caught up in a sea of turmoil that hampers your overall ability to relate and love others, but even more importantly to love yourself.

Every person’s perception of mother love colors his or her view of the world and self-definition. Depending upon your experiences, you may learn to be caring, giving, compassionate and empathetic; or you may learn bitterness, distrust, helplessness and manipulation. This is why taking the time to learn about your mother’s life is so important. This information will help you to better understand the choices she made, her personality, her

ability to communicate and display affection, the number of sacrifices she endured.

Bearing all of this in mind, move quickly to resolve anger and unfinished business where your mother is concerned.

Heal your emotional wounds, and if necessary, find ways to forgive your mother even if she has not given you the kind of love and support you craved, or if for some reason she has been unable to be a mother to you. When it comes to your mother, choose to open your heart to the best of your ability. Focus on being thankful for the gift of life that she gave you, even if that is all your mother has ever given to you. If you already have an excellent relationship with your mother, treasure it and let your mother know just how much she means to you.

No matter your personal situation, when it comes to your mother, you do not want to have any regrets. Remember, in a split second things can change and you do not want to spend time laboring over “I should have,” when your time and talents need to be focused on your “I wills.” Honor your mother and your life no matter the circumstances.

This attitude will bring you a tremendous amount of peace, and an outpouring of blessings will come your way for choosing to focus on the positive instead of dwelling on the negative.

Mothers are not always right, but your mother will always be the woman that gave you the gift of life. In spite of her imperfections, her absence in your life, her human failings, or her inability to meet your emotional needs, none of those things can keep you from soaring to great heights unless you choose to embrace that attitude as your own.

Seek to come to terms with your mother love, because by doing so, you can earnestly become the person that you were destined to be.

What feeds this behaviour however is not the PM’s genuine concern for his partner’s enjoyment or well-being. He is motivated instead by a selfish desire to be known as “the best”. This is so he could have fuel for his locker-room or “overdrinks” conversations with his other peeps.

Penis Men therefore do not really respect women.

All women are walking, living, breathing vaginas for the taking. Women to PMs are reduced to mere sexual objects for their pleasure and for the gratification of their egos. A PM will not give a woman the time of day, unless he believes that he can get into her pants; after all to Penis Men, women serve no other purpose but sex and if not that, at least a fair share of lustful ogling. A PM therefore may be very flattering in his comments.

He may also see all women as “honeys” and “sweethearts” because women are only as valuable as he constructs them to be. (Ever wondered about the invention of the term “Playboy Bunny”?)

The Penis Man’s obsession with sex a la “penis grows hard, brain goes soft” ensures that he does not think through his sexual choices with any clarity or intelligence. He engages in highly risky sexual behaviour because sex is all about the thrill of danger. The more dangerous the escapade, the more excited he becomes and the more interested he is in perpetuating this behaviour. For example, a PM will have unprotected sex with multiple partners. No matter how much some PMs may be warned about the dangers of unprotected sex, they ultimately believe that they will cheat disease. To the PM there is nothing more important than his pleasure and personal aggrandizement. Risky sexual behaviour also includes having sex with someone’s wife, doing it in a room at work when he thinks no one is looking, having sex with a minor, and of course lying constantly to feed his sexual addiction. At the worst level a Penis Man could even be on the down low!

Ultimately the Penis Man is one who worships at the feet of sex. He is guided daily in his sexual decisions by the anticipation of pleasure despite the risks, cost, or consequences. This is however symptomatic of deeper emotional and psychological issues. To be fair to him, he may have had attachment issues from childhood and may have experienced a lack of love, attention or a consistent sense of being nurtured. Sex, once it was discovered, became then a substitute for feelings of worth and acceptance. He may have tried to use pleasure as a substitute for feelings of inadequacy and incompleteness. He may have also suffered from female sexual abuse as a teen (yes guys that first older woman who laid you was really your child-abuser). As a result, he believed every lie she and every woman since that time spouted; that he was no better than the length and weight of his penis. Is it any wonder that Penis Men actually become obsessed with their literal penis (duh) and will either boast of its size, lie about it or wonder how it compares with others?

Unfortunately, the woman who finds herself involved with a PM is in for the ride of her life, and I don’t mean “fun ride”. She is likely to be a victim of insensitivity and infidelity in such a relationship. And I’m not suggesting that PMs never care about a woman’s pleasure; not by any means. Of course he wants to hear her scream the house down and particularly he wants her to scream his name. However where we women go wrong is in misunderstanding the PM’s obsession with our bodies. At the heart of this, is a man who cares primarily about himself. He does not understand anything about notions of selfless love or integrity. The PM is not into a woman for who she is. He just wants to use her vagina until a brighter, friendlier more unfamiliar one comes along; as every woman with a broken heart on account of repeated unfaithfulness already knows.

For the woman who knows her worth and wants to be valued as a whole person, the Penis Man will never, ever do. For the woman who was taken for a ride by a PM and was hurt in the process, there is absolutely nothing wrong with walking away; (stiff upper lip, chin up, you go girl!) For the woman who walks with eyes wide open, right into a relationship with this “bad boy” because she thinks this is hot and sexy, well, she has her own set of issues and that is a whole other article and discussion. © Denise J Charles 2012 All rights reserved

azel Bernetta Charles is a Performance Artist a Poet and she writes short stories. Before

graduating from Ellerslie Secondary School she attended Edgehill Memorial Girls School for her primary education. She is currently a student at the University of West Indies at Cave Hill Campus, majoring in theatre and film. Hazel says she is motivated by people who have come from humble beginnings to easy endings and also from people who are physical challenged, yet still continue to reach for the stars. Hazel has four children, three daughters and one son, who attended Coleridge and

hen you look for ways to make money from an industry rather than looking for ways to serve that industry, you add to the problem Why We Do What We Do It always starts with an idea. Everything does. Show the people the world. Provide life-changing experiences.

That’s right. They asked us to fundraise. Their reason: future participants would be able to impact our partner communities even more if they had a pool of funds with each group. These funds would be dispensed through consensus-based decision making as a revolving fund through the association.

From the beginning, Save our shops resonated strongly among every person we spoke with. With the down turn in the economic recession, it seemed that everybody was taking a loss in their businesses. We, saw the need and wanted to create a new way forward for the shops and supporting businesses including local manufacturers and farmers. One that combined traditions, local products, local dishes, tourism, development and Barbadian entrepreneurs. So we came up with the idea of “Save Our Shops”.

Our biggest question from the beginning was: how can we create ethical and sustainable programs that actually benefit the communities we work with? We had little to no international support and never received external funding. After the successful run of our first program, our member from our first couple of years told us that they wished they had access to funds to allow them to continue to achieve the required standards we seek.

aking it to the next level! The Bajan Association of Rum Shops (B.A.R.S. Inc.) recently launched its inaugural "The Art of Bartending" seminar series in an effort to advance the level of service within the rum industry establishments across Barbados.

"I'm pleased to be part of this initiative, to educate and enhance the skills of the persons serving our products," says Cheryl Armstrong, Marketing Manager, Armstrong Agencies, representing, Claytons Kola Tonic, sponsor of the Art of Bartending Seminar.

A press conference was held two weeks ago at the Headquarters of the Barbados Coalition of Service Industries (BCSI) to announce to Association members as well as anyone from the general public interested in acquiring a new skill or improving their existing skills behind the bar.

We continually campaign for the skills upgrading and capacity building for practitioners within the services sectors and our intentions for the Bajan Association of Rum Shops are no different."

Nikos is also a Greek Master Blender who possesses a sincere passion for cocktails and the history of Caribbean rum. His passion has brought him to Barbados as a rum traveler, to uncover the history behind the birthplace of rum; as he is presently compiling literature for his new book.

ay 1: The Art of Bartending Seminar – 14th May 2015

REPORT The Art of Bartending Seminars got off to a great start on Thursday 14th May 2015, at the BCSI Headquarters, Building 3, Harbour Road, St. Michael. The seminar which started promptly at 12:00pm saw an influx of interested participants who were more than engaged as they absorbed the knowledge shared by Facilitators Dameain Williams of Barbados and Nikos Arvanitis of Greece.

At the outset, participants were welcomed and the Facilitators were introduced by Host for the day Raeann Beckles. As Dameain took centre stage, he shared a bit about himself and his advancement throughout the years from Bus Boy to Bartender; which today has granted him a number of awards.

As he scanned the crowd he also saw familiar faces; who seemed equally pleased to have in their midst a familiar face. Following Dameain, was our visiting Greek friend Nikos Arvanitis, who quickly dispelled all barriers between ‘Teacher’ and ‘Student’; encouraging those in attendance to see each other as

friends.

Also present was Cheryl Armstrong, Marketing Manager - Armstrong Agencies, who showed her unwavering support of the days affairs.

As the seminar progressed, participants were told that balance is important to life, and equally important in mixing the right cocktail. What is Alcohol, Base Spirits and Classic Cocktails were among the areas discussed during the first session.

Participants were also exposed to the ‘flare’ technique in their pursuit to interest their customers in a particular drink. As participant’s listened intently, they took notes and were also treated to cocktails prepared in demonstration by their Facilitators. Participants were also afforded the opportunity to fish from the minds of their Facilitators, as they asked questions to gain further knowledge.

The Caribbean and European Instructor Duo, captivated the attention of all attendees; with their humour, knowledge, stories, techniques and skills.

In this light, it is safe to say that participants were pleased with the first day of The Art of Bartending Seminar and they eagerly await the next session!

If this statement is assumed true, then the benefits afforded by private tuition are enormous. You will have the advantage of a whole teacher to yourself, with their lesson plans and strategies of teaching designed just for you! It seems impossible to doubt the enormous benefits this will offer.

In a classroom, one teacher may be faced with approximately thirty pupils, each with different abilities, different rates of learning, and individual strengths and weaknesses.

Yet despite this, for the majority of the lesson the teacher will be forced to treat his class as if it contained just one student. He or she will orate from one end of the classroom, unable to gauge how effectively each pupil is assimilating the lesson. It is unlikely even the best of teachers would spot the particular point of misunderstanding cast on the countenance on one pupil, hidden amongst so many other faces. To draw attention to their lack of understanding can be intimidating for the pupil: everyone else is silent, so they must have understood.

F

aced with this new and unexpected twist in my life, I find that my mind has become sickeningly

The haunting intervals of obsessive chatter and scattered drizzles of things resembling bright possibilities of tomorrows that never came have finally been silenced for what feels like forever. I am in danger of becoming numb, but my spirit and the remainders of the person kicking, bucking, screaming, simmering, breathing and rising inside of me, are insisiting that I am not to give up...despite the abyss of loneliness I now find mySelf within, they're pleading with me not to sacrifice the bliss that is my soul in the name of the cross that is suffering, loss, and degrees of despair.

I had forgotten that I was not beyond this apparent 'fall

from grace'...until the perfect reminder of life's temporary nature came, and chose this soul to take. I could or should have seen the signs indicating that this life is undefinable, ever-changing and unpredictable. I forgot that life and every single thing in it, demands constant attention, awareness, and intervention. The last morsel of strength and wisdom I possess remind me that, though I am suffering, I was not born to suffer.

There's a lump in my throat that wants to rob me of any remaining breaths these lungs wish to take...and while I now feel a kind of exhaustion that renders me apparently helpless, I just this minute saw a butterfly above my head and the in front of store window under which I sit, dancing as if just for me.

he day you paste your poetry online was the day that I decided not to resign on giving up on my writing skills those words that are so fulfilled they are more than just words in poetry. It is like life to me so then I thought, I would never know the heart that I could be reaching if I give up on my writing.

I don’t want to be just a stack of printed pages of loose nothingness lost in libraries of incompleteness but to be exposed on desk used by every man to be understood by cultures and others in far off lands.

May my words be etched upon each human’s mind in the good and even in the bad times.

I want to touch the sadden and lonely heart for I can see there is but one small spark so I want to rekindle that fire that is slowly dying make them embers become brightly glowing.

I want to be the poet who will help to create your imaginary world where all your wishes and dreams unfurled to be a poet is so God like.

I want to be the poet to help ease you through your pain I want to be a helper not for fortune and fame to help that single parent struggle and never to lose scope God says that faith as big as a mustard seed sure is sufficient hope.
