There are many differing views on what makes someone an entrepreneur and what is an entrepreneurial venture. In a sense the definition itself is evolving as the field itself comes into the mainstream of American business. While we speak of many of the originators of businesses in the past as entrepreneurs, it was not until the mid1970 that the concept became a prevalent enough part of our economy that definitions even were necessary. Consequently, we see in the literature a wide variety of possibilities for what this field really is. Looking online, the Hypertext OnlineWebster defines an entrepreneur as “one who creates a product on his own account.” That sounds a trifle stuffy, is very limited and doesn't fit for many of the people widely known as entrepreneurs. Does just creating a product make you entrepreneurial if you never do anything with it? What if you take someone's product and make it a success? That is not entrepreneurial? Investorwords, a set of definitions of financial terms, defines an entrepreneur as “an individual who starts his/her own business.” At what point then are you no longer an entrepreneur? When are you no longer starting up? From The International Society of Entrepreneurs comes another Webster definition: “a person who organizes and manages a business undertaking, assuming all the risk for the sake of the profit.” Assuming risk certainly fits most entrepreneurs. This definition is definitely richer, but assumes that the motivation is purely profit. Moving from formal definitions, Ashoka, an organization that promotes social change, calls for “social entrepreneurs,” people who open up major new
possibilities in education, health, the environment, and other areas of human need, “just as business entrepreneurs lead innovation in commerce, social entrepreneurs drive social change.” The concept of business entrepreneurs leading innovation is appealing because it denotes more than just starting a business. An entrepreneur herself, Daile Tucker, provides her thoughts on what it takes to be an entrepreneur in “Are You an Entrepreneur?” She defines an entrepreneur as “a person who has decided to take control of his future and become self-employed whether by creating his own unique business or working as a member of a team, as in multi-level marketing.” She identifies work ethics and several character traits of successful entrepreneurs, ending with “Entrepreneurs compete with themselves and believe that success or failure lies within their personal control or influence.” This begins to touch on motivational aspects for being an entrepreneur that may distinguish the type of person drawn to being an entrepreneur. In an Entrepreneur Magazine feature article in 1995, Dare to Be Different, Gayle Sato Stoddard takes Tucker's definition a step further, acknowledging innovation, but also providing alternatives. Stoddard suggests that to be an entrepreneur you don't particularly have to be daring. Many entrepreneurs are perfectly content to sell tried-and-true products, bringing a steady income without the intensity of launching a new product. She labels these “lifestyle entrepreneurs.” They want to be their own boss and make a good living, but they don't need to be on the cutting edge. Many such people buy franchises or an established business.

OCTOBER 2015 An Academic Perspective Our academic colleagues have become much more interested in entrepreneurism as a viable field of study in the past 15 years. Much of the impetus for this interest is laid at the feet of David Birch of MIT who in 1979 shocked the academic world with his research indicating that the Fortune 500 had stopped creating jobs. According to Birch, the source of new jobs now came from what he called “growth companies” - what are now called entrepreneurial ventures. Current research looks at more precisely defining entrepreneurs and what makes them successful. For example, Michigan State University in a study entitled “The Guiding Principles for Entrepreneurial Success” identifies Entering entrepreneurs (private owners and heads of non-subsidiary manufacturing companies with annual sales under $2.5 million), Emerging entrepreneurs (private owners and heads of nonsubsidiary manufacturing companies with growth rates of at least 20% and annual sales of between $2.5 million and $20 million), and Emergent entrepreneurs (private owners and heads of non-subsidiary manufacturing companies with growth rates of at least 20% and annual sales of at least $30 million). Their study is concerned with what factors influence an entrepreneur's success at crossing the barrier into becoming an Emergent entrepreneur. In other words, why do some entrepreneurs stall out and eventually fail and why do some eventually succeed. The other aspect of their study of interest is that it has the beginnings of a handle on how long remains an entrepreneur. The limiting factor of this study is that not all entrepreneurs are in manufacturing - and certainly $2.5 million is a large number for many of us not in the manufacturing business. Different milestones may apply for different types of entrepreneurial ventures, but there do seem to be definitive stages one goes through in an entrepreneurial venture.
Definition Revisited.” They based their work on a five stage model, from Existence to Maturity, focusing primarily on the first three stages: Existence- “the period when the venture is developing products and/or services, finding customers, operating as a simple flat organization,” usually lasting from 0-3 years, Survival – “the stage at which the organization is delivering product, becoming more concerned with cash flow and revenue generation while producing marginal returns,” usually between years 1-5, and Success – “the stage at which the organization has established a market position and is achieving at- or above-market returns,” usually from 3-10 years. They, too, are interested in what takes an organization over the wall between these stages - why some fail and some succeed. Both these studies indicate there is a success point when the company evolves into a more traditional business model. So entrepreneurism can be considered, by these models, as limited either by failure or by the success of the company in that it either goes out of business or becomes a mature company. Many of these companies at the point of maturity worry about losing their entrepreneurial spirit. Many larger corporations with a long period of maturity experience the same fear. From that has evolved intrapreneurship, nurturing of innovation within large corporations, another new field of study and development. The goal is to continue the “spirit of entrepreneurism” into the maturity phase of a business.

The Evolution of the Professional Entrepreneur Tom Richman in “Creators of the New Economy” hypothesizes that what has really occurred is that entrepreneurism has changed dramatically from amateurism to what he terms the professional entrepreneur.
The clear conclusion from all this is that entrepreneurism is a dynamic, developing part of the economy at this time in history. Entrepreneurism itself is emerging and maturing. What it will be as a mature contributor to the economy is yet to be determined, but certainly innovation, knowledge and globalization are important factors.
What he is seeing is an evolution in entrepreneurism, not only because motivation from downsizing is putting more talented people out of work, but also because of the opportunities available from globalization and the virtual marketplace. Many very skilled people are joining the entrepreneurial ranks, raising the level of business knowledge and skill.
To quote Tom O'Malia from his introduction to the book, Been There, Done That, “Entrepreneurs are about loving their journey, not their destination.” For me, this sums up the excitement and fun of being an entrepreneur. And that is why it is not synonymous with being a small businessperson. The entrepreneurial mind set can operate in all sizes and types of businesses.

Have you noticed how life occurs in spirals? By Norma T. Hollis I started studying the spirals in life about 20 years ago when I became a labyrinth facilitator. A labyrinth is a walking meditation tool that dates back at least to Ancient Egypt. A labyrinth is often confused with a maze although it is actually the opposite of a maze. A maze is a confusing path and at each step you might find yourself at a blocked wall. A labyrinth is one long path that twists and turns. If you just follow the path you will eventually find yourself in the center, then you can follow the path back out again. As you walk a labyrinth it is said that you strengthen your connection to spirit. No one knows exactly why this is but the speculation is that the spirals are the reason. As you walk a labyrinth and make twisting
turns to follow the path you are actually making spiral turns.
Spirals seem to be one of the mysteries in the world. Within humans, we can see spirals in our brain, intestines and even in our DNA. We also see spirals in other parts of life such as the Milky Way. I've also read books and articles that talk about life and time asking the question of whether time is linear or spiral. In other words, do we as humans follow a straight line of time from millenniums ago to the future or is time simply a spiral where we repeat certain aspects of life from time to time.

These are questions to ponder if you are interested in deepening your understanding of how life works. It becomes more meaningful when you actually take a walk on a labyrinth and deepen your spiritual connection. I became a labyrinth facilitator in 1996. Since that time I have made labyrinths and even designed a few. The labyrinth that I made and use is painted on a 30' x 30' canvas. It travels with me to enhance some speaking engagements or when a group just wants a labyrinth walk.
In 1996 I had the opportunity to introduce the labyrinth to the Los Angeles community. Since then we have conducted labyrinth walks multiple times. If you have not yet walked a labyrinth, do a search to see where one is located in your community. Come and walk the spirals and see how your life is impacted. Some people who walk the labyrinth receive answers for questions they have been pondering for years. It's the magic of the spirals. Come and experience it for yourself.
Whether you walk a labyrinth or not, consider the spirals in your life. Are certain patterns repeating? Do these patterns serve you or is it time to make a change? If you see that you are repeating certain patterns that keep spiraling in your life, remember that you have the power to make a change. Walking a labyrinth is a great way to discover the path to appropriate change.

The Gun Hill Signal Station
The Gun Hill Signal Station is strategically perched on a hilltop in the parish of St. George and is one of the six (6) signal stations erected across Barbados after the 1816 Slave Rebellion. This 19th century signal station arguably offers the best views of the entire island of Barbados and contains a captivating collection of military memorabilia. When it was known as Briggs Hill, it was named as one of the four points where guns were to be placed to give alarm in the event of an invasion.

OCTOBER 2015 Under this oversized lion, there is an inscription with the sculptor's name and a verse from the Vulgate Latin translation of the Bible. Translated in English, it means 'He shall have dominion also from sea to sea, and from the river, unto the ends of the earth'. Clearly this speaks to the magnitude of authority the British had over Barbados and the world. The Lion at Gun Hill and the Signal Station are very easy to find. Using St George Parish Church as a major landmark, the attraction is a mere five minutes’ drive up the hill on the left-hand side of the road after passing the church. The diverse ancestry of the island attributes to its current unique cultural blend which includes Arawak Indians, British settlers, European Indentured Slaves, African Slaves and East Indians. Overall, the people of Barbados (or Bajans as we are known) are quite friendly; so fitting in with locals will lend itself quite easily to your peace of mind.
Barbados is an island of the Lesser Antilles, 21 miles in length, as much as 14 miles in width and divided into 11 parishes. It is located at 13.4N, 15.4W. The island is situated in the western area of the North Atlantic Ocean and 100 kilometers east of the Windward Islands and the Caribbean Sea. Barbados is relatively flat with the exception of one major high point, Mount Hillaby, which measures approximately 1,115 feet or some 343 metres above sea level. The west coast of Barbados offers calm, clear water which is quite conducive to your many beach activities; while the east coast opens up beautifully to crashing waves and an environment that is more suited to sun bathing, walking, jogging, surfing and even meditation.

3. the right mindset The mindset with which you approach your goal has a great deal to do with the end result of that goal. In fact, sometimes the mindset is the sole influence to the outcome of the event. Take chess for example. Chess is largely a battle of strategy, yet many people disregard the confidence required to be a great chess player. In fact, this type of confidence is important for anyone wanting to make a great attempt at any goal. However, I use chess as an example because it has few outside elements that could effect the results. It's one of the rare examples that is almost completely dependent on a single skill...the ability to analyze moves ahead of time and counter your opponents moves. 4. get an accountability partner Let's face it, there are times when you just don't feel like pursuing your goals. Everyone has this feeling at some point in their life no matter how worthy their goals may be. When it comes to getting in your workout, the mere thought of pain alone can deter you from getting started. However, the major attribute that separates a very successful person in the pursuit of any goal from their unsuccessful counterparts is a very simple one. This attribute is the ability to press on through hardships when most people would either give up or lose interest in the goal. 5. the ANT mentality Have you ever had experience with fire ants? Unless you have lived in Florida or some other sub-tropical region, chances are you have never seen how ferocious these tiny creatures are. As a teenager in Florida I would occasionally set fire to ant piles (yes, I was a mischievous kid). However, these weren't ordinary ants. I could literally have just set fire to an ant pile only to come back a few hours
later to see the damage completely erased by worker ants. The speed and cohesion demonstrated by the fire ants was mind-boggling. It didn't matter what distraction, injury, or resistance you gave them...they are the ultimate army of workers. What's even more amazing is the amount of progress these ants could make in a few hours. We are talking about the collective progress of hundreds of thousands of little, efficient workers. Do you think you could mirror this example given by nature? Do you think that you could exhibit such focus in your daily activities that nothing could get in your way of the end result? Just imagine if you could!!! The obvious takeaway is that if you approach your daily goals (especially your workouts) like an ant would approach their work, you will run over your competition and achieve anything you have scheduled. You will meet your goals with such power that anything attempting to stand in your way will succumb to your efforts. Even your biggest barrier will have no choice but to move the hell out of your way. Your biggest barrier is, of coarse, your own thoughts of DOUBT and PROCRASTINATION. In conclusion, the ANT mentality is nothing more than pressing on to your goals no matter who or what may get in your way. If you have ever set out toward a certain goal and taken the time to write down some sort of plan, chances are that your goal is worthy enough to focus all your energy and efforts on. We frequently question the worthiness of a goal many times during it's pursuit. THIS procrastination...this entertainment of doubtful ideas is what must die a quick death if we wish to take hold of our plans to change our physiques and head full steam ahead.

There's an important connection between what you eat and how you look. Learn which foods help you look your best. A balanced diet is an essential prescription for healthy and vibrant skin. The good news is that the foods that happen to be good for your skin are also good for your overall health. Many people find that the appearance of aging skin — wrinkles, thickening, discoloration, and decreased elasticity — is one of their biggest beauty concerns. While genetics largely determines when your skin starts to show these signs of aging, and the extent to
which it shows them, environmental damage to your skin, as well as damage you cause yourself through lifestyle choices, can greatly accelerate this process. Skin damage occurs as a result of oxidation, a chemical process in which unstable molecules called free radicals steal electrons from healthy cells. The most damaging oxidative stressors that we expose ourselves to are smoking and sunlight.

OCTOBER 2015 Aside from staying away from cigarettes and using sunscreen when you go out, the next best thing you can do for your skin's health is to eat a diet rich in antioxidants. These are nutrients that work to defend your body's cells — including skin cells — against the damage of oxidative stress. You're probably familiar with some antioxidants, such as vitamin C, vitamin E, selenium, and vitamin A (in the form of beta-carotene). Others, which you may be less familiar with, are collectively known asphytochemicals (there are hundreds of them), and they are found in foods such as fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and beans. To keep your skin well-protected and nourished, and to extend its youthful appearance, focus on the foods that are good sources of the following nutrients: Vitamin C Vitamin C is involved in the production of collagen (which keeps skin firm) and protects cells from damage caused by free radicals. Scientific studies have found that when lab animals eat vitamin C — fortified food, their skin is better able to fight oxidative damage. It's important, then, to replenish your skin's vitamin C stores every day by eating plenty of fruits and vegetables. Good sources include bell peppers (red, green, and yel-
low), broccoli, cantaloupe, mangoes, oranges, pineapple, snow peas, strawberries, tomatoes, and watermelon. Vitamin E Vitamin E helps protect cell membranes and guards your skin against damage from the sun's UV radiation. Some research has suggested that vitamin E may work in combination with vitamin C to provide an extra degree of anti-aging skin protection. However, because recent studies have raised some questions about the safety of vitamin E supplements, this nutrient should come from your diet, not from high-dose pills. It's best to stick with food sources like wheat germ, fortified wholegrain cereals, nuts and seeds, olive oil, Swiss chard, and spinach, as well as the small amount of vitamin E found in a multivitamin. Beta-carotene Beta-carotene, another antioxidant that's critical for skin health, is converted to vitamin A in the body and is involved in the growth and repair of body tissues. It may also protect your skin against sun damage. In extremely high doses, however, pure vitamin A from supplements can be toxic, so be sure to avoid them unless a doctor has recommended them and is closely supervising you. Beta-carotene from foods like apricots, cantaloupe, carrots, red bell peppers, mangoes, pumpkin, and sweet potato is sufficient and entirely safe for your skin. Selenium Selenium is an antioxidant mineral that helps protect the skin from sun damage; it also helps the skin maintain firmness and elasticity. Selenium obtained from food has been shown to reduce sun damage and even prevent some skin cancers in animals. Be sure to avoid selenium supplements, however. The Nutritional Prevention of Cancer Trial found that people with a high risk of nonmelanoma skin cancers who took selenium supplements actually had a 25 percent increased risk of squamous cell carcinomas. The best food sources for selenium are Brazil nuts (no more than 1 or 2 nuts a day because the selenium is so concentrated), tuna (canned, light), crab, oysters, whole-wheat pasta, lean beef, shrimp, whole-wheat bread, turkey, wheat germ, chicken breast, mushrooms, and eggs.

These healthy fats also reduce inflammation throughout the body, which may translate into fewer skin breakouts. Omega-3s also seem to offer the skin protection against sun damage. In a study of skin cancer, people who ate diets rich in fish oils and other omega-3 fats had a 29 percent lower risk of squamous cell skin cancer than those who got very little omega-3 fats from food. Occasionally, we are able to make a shot just like the pros. In Barbados, we claim to want service quality. However, without national standards that are measurable, it is like a golf course without parminiature golf. Many people and organizations consider POLITENESS (the absence of rudeness) to be the standard for service excellence. This definition does not make us globally competitive. To defend and insist upon it makes us look stupid and backward. It is a sure sign that we are not ready for primetime.
It struck me recently that a common greeting around the golf course comes in the form of the question: “How’s you game? The answers given to this question usually disclose that improvement is needed. It doesn’t matter if the person is a very good golfer, just starting, or one with a perpetually mediocre game; we all wish to play better. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we all had the same attitude toward service excellence? Why don’t we? There are some fascinating parallels. For example, in the game golf, the individual interacts with the course and conditions to achieve a specific target called PAR. To achieve par, one must put the ball in the hole within a specified number of strokes. Par for each hole, on each course, is announced and does not change. This allows the players a consistent measure of their ability

Those who play at par or better come from a wide variety of backgrounds and are generally admired for their ability to play at this high level. The phenomenon of Tiger Woods speaks for itself. By contrast, I hear front line service providers responding defensively to any suggestion their game needs to improve. They want recognition but want to set their own terms of performance. Indeed, I have not seen any national awards for service excellence that are linked to measurable,-publicized standards of performance. By rewarding non-performance and using ambivalent criteria, we encourage mediocrity and boast as though it is true excellence. I am all for encouraging improvement but real professionals must demonstrate attention, intention, and consistent performance against a lofty standard. National service quality is directly linked to individual commitments to excellence.

Roslyn Griffith Roslyn Griffith grew up in Stanmore Lodge and Deacons Farm, Black Rock, St. Michael, Barbados. She was educated at St. Stephen’s Primary School, Springer Memorial School and Ellerslie Secondary School.
She later attended The O’Level Institute and (BCC) Barbados Community College, where she studied Nursing. This (RN) Registered Nurse is the proud mother of two children, Aisha who is an Accountant and her son Kemar, who has followed her footsteps and is a Registered Nurse. Roslyn’s’ mother Eleanor Griffith was employed at Grand Barbados Hotel as a Cook until her retirement. They are about 17 different species of sea urchin to be found in the coastal waters of this little island, .
The steamed White Sea Egg that has become a savoured Bajan delicacy. The golden roe is a delicious delicacy, enjoyed by Barbadians for many years. Unfortunately a decline in the sea egg population led to extensive bans on harvesting. But good news‌ the ban has been briefly lifted and Bajans are once again enjoying this delicious treat.
Each shell was quickly cracked and opened, and the sea egg roe carefully removed. Traditionally sea egg is either steamed or sauteed, and served with plain white rice, cucumber and a few slices of avocado pear. Tried sauteed with some onion and sweet peppers, and served with pickled cucumber and rice. How was it? Truly delicious! Next time you visit Barbados, be sure to ask a friendly Bajan if sea eggs are in season.

Heritage Barbados Rachel Pringle Polgreen Rachel Pringle Polgreen who was the owner of a famous

hotel in Bridgetown, Barbados. She was born Rachel Lauder
in order to “establish more influence over her benefactor,” Thomas Pringle ended his relationship with Rachel and left for Jamaica. Rachel quickly found another protector and adopted his name in 1780 Rachel Pringle Polgreen opened a hotel in Canary Street. Under Polgreen’s patronage, Rachel was able to open a tavern and her famous Royal Navy Hotel in Bridgetown during the 1770s. The American Revolutionary War being in full swing and France fighting on the side of the United States meant that there was considerable military and naval presence in the Caribbean. Her hotel, offering sexual pleasures to sailors in the British Royal Navy, acquired its name from an alleged encounter with Prince William Henry. In 1786 Prince William Henry Duke of Clarence and Later became King William IV of England visited Barbados while serving as a naval captain. As reported, the Prince and his companions came to Polgreen’s hotel and took rooms, it is said that one night after wining and dining with a party of officers that the prince and his companions proceeded to wreck the establishment. They even knocked Rachel who was heavy set and well endowed off her chair. Rachel took it all quiet well and gave only a mild protest but the next day

I
f your aim is to improve your aptitude and knowledge base in a particular field, all education pertaining to this subject will be useful. If this statement is assumed true, then the benefits afforded by private tuition are enormous. You will have the advantage of a whole teacher to yourself, with their lesson plans and strategies of teaching designed just for you! It seems impossible to doubt the enormous benefits this will offer. In a classroom, one teacher may be faced with approximately thirty pupils, each with different abilities, different rates of learning, and individual strengths and weaknesses. Yet despite this, for the majority of the lesson the teacher will be forced to treat his class as if it contained just one student. He or she will orate from one end of the classroom, unable to gauge how effectively each pupil is assimilating the lesson. The lesson plans will be designed to fit the needs of the average pupil; and the teacher will proceed at a rate suitable for the average pupil. In this environment it is all to easy for a bright child or adolescent to fail to grasp one particular point, as the swathe of teacher talk washes over them like the unrelenting tides. It is unlikely even the best of teachers would spot the particular point of misunderstanding cast on the countenance on one pupil, hidden amongst so many other faces. To draw attention to their lack of understanding can be intimidating for the pupil: everyone else is silent, so they must have understood. Do I want to draw attention to myself? All too often the misunderstanding goes unexpressed and unaided. The obvious benefit of one to one tuition is that the tutor can tailor their teaching style to the abilities of their student. They will be able to gauge the level of the pupils understanding, and, more importantly, track down the sources of misunderstanding, and deal with them effectively. Away from the bustle of the classroom, the student will feel more able to voice their difficulties; and having just one pupil to deal with, the teacher will be more
