THIS ISSUE OF HAVEN IS DEDICATED IN MEMORY OF GEORGE PHYDIAS MITCHELL May 21, 1919 – July 26, 2013 Two-thousand-thirteen marked the 30th anniversary of the Mitchell Family’s development of Bald Head Island, North Carolina. The milestone was bittersweet, however, as the year also brought about the profound loss of George P. Mitchell, the family’s remarkable 94-year-old patriarch. Born to Greek immigrants, George Mitchell overcame poverty and the early loss of his mother to achieve outsized accomplishments, while never forgetting his humble roots. He led his life with a winning combination of confidence, risk, intellect, imagination, persistence, integrity and loyalty. Through the 1950s and ’60s, George Mitchell built the independent company that became Mitchell Energy and Development Corporation. Two decades before his innovations in hydraulic fracturing achieved economically feasible production of natural gas from the Barnett Shale of north Texas, he envisioned that the shale resources in North America could change our country’s energy outlook. His multi-decade commitment to crack the shale, literally and intellectually, has fundamentally altered world energy markets. But, he also recognized the potential environmental consequences, and dedicated philanthropic funding to support stakeholder collaborations in raising the standards for gas drilling to protect water and air quality. Starting in the early 1960s, he set out to create an innovative, sustainable new town near Houston, Texas, called The Woodlands. His blueprint for the tract of land was inspired by the concepts in Ian McHarg’s book, “Design with Nature,” along with an appreciation for the human scale of his boyhood Galveston neighborhoods. The town that emerged from his vision won the prestigious FIABCI Prix d’Excellence international award for design, and is now home to more than 120,000 people. Driven by a burning curiosity and a fascination of what may lie at the edge of what is knowable, he founded the George P. and Cynthia Woods Mitchell Institute for Fundamental Physics and Astronomy at Texas A&M University. With the Board of the Carnegie Institute of Science, he co-funded an initiative to build the first of six massive mirrors for the Giant Magellan Telescope, an unprecedented engineering project that opened new horizons in astronomy. Up until the last few years, when his health went into decline and travel became difficult, George Mitchell and his late wife Cynthia visited Bald Head Island regularly, celebrating every Easter here with family. While he was not involved in the island’s day-to-day operations, his vision, guiding hand and unwavering support of the island’s development cannot be overstated. George Phydias Mitchell dreamed big. Our living memory is inspired by his big dreams, grand challenges and the sustained perseverance he demonstrated. His brilliant life leaves a legacy that continues to guide the Mitchell Family and the communities he loved. Painting by Renee Wiley

Ten Things You Need To Know About Bald Head Island Before You Plan Your Trip

BALD HEAD ISLAND ISN’T YOUR TYPICAL BEACH DESTINATION, WHICH MEANS DOING A

LITTLE PREPARATION BEFORE YOU GET HERE ISN’T A BAD IDEA. WE’VE COMPILED A LIST OF THE MOST IMPORTANT THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THIS BARRIER ISLAND BEFORE YOU VISIT OUR SHORES.

YOU ARRIVE BY BOAT Unlike most barrier islands in North Carolina, no bridge connects Bald Head Island to the mainland. This feature (or lack thereof) not only makes you feel as if you’ve traveled somewhere much more remote, it allows for the gorgeous 20-minute passenger ferry ride from quaint Southport to the island. Ask around—many long-time visitors will tell you that boarding the ferry is their trigger to slip into “vacation mode.” You’ll want to have your camera atthe-ready during the journey; in addition to the coastal scenery, you might be lucky enough to see a dolphin swimming alongside the boat.

haven 11

LEAVE YOUR CAR BEHIND One of the first things you’ll notice when you arrive on Bald Head Island is the lack of cars. Traffic is a thing of the past, at least for a little while. So how do you get around the island? Electric golf carts are the preferred mode of transport here, followed closely by bicycles. Sure, it makes for slower going, but that’s exactly the point. Rental homes come equipped with carts, and our tram system (island-speak for fuel-efficient mini trucks that pull passenger carriages) will get you from the ferry landing to your accommodations and vice versa. Coming just for the day or need to rent extra carts? No problem—Riverside Adventure Company in the harbor will hook you up.

Bald Head Creek

THERE’S A LOT TO DO HERE—OR NOT You might very well choose to do a whole lot of nothing on your Bald Head Island visit, but it’s not for lack of options. Fill your days with outdoor adventures like kayaking the creek, playing golf or learning to sail, or take advantage of the island’s inherent peace and quiet to catch up on your reading or take a much-deserved nap. Sprinkle in time for hitting the beach, wandering through our shops and exploring the island by cart or bike, and you’ve got the recipe for an ideal BHI vacation.

12

YOU’LL GET CARRIED AWAY BY OUR HISTORY Old Baldy, our iconic lighthouse, is the oldest in the state, and that's just the beginning of the story. Bald Head Island was home to a British fort during the Revolutionary War, a Confederate fort during the Civil War, and was a popular hangout for pirates. Take a Historic Tour with the Old Baldy Foundation to learn more, or set out in your cart and explore on your own.

THERE’S NO BAD TIME TO VISIT Sure, summer is the most popular time to visit, but the other three seasons offer their own sweet rewards. Spring and fall are temperate, allowing for a longer beach season and those bright Carolina blue skies we’re famous for. The mild winter is an ideal time to play golf or head out on a fishing trip. Of course summers here are epic, with long beach days and warm nights. You might just need to try each season to decide which is your favorite.

14

RENTAL HOMES ARE PLENTIFUL AND DIVERSE Wherever you decide to stay on Bald Head Island, you really can’t go wrong. Rental homes span the island’s environments, so it’s up to you to choose one that best fits your style. Oceanfront and dune ridge homes offer spectacular views of West, South and East Beaches, while homes nested under the tree canopy in the maritime forest feel cozy and protected. Staying in the lively harbor puts you in walking distance of shops and restaurants, while renting a home on the salt marsh affords access to the creek for kayaking or paddleboarding. Of course, no matter where you stay, you’re never more than a 15-minute cart ride away from any of the island’s treasures.

PACK LIGHT, WE’VE GOT (ALMOST) EVERYTHING No need to haul everything-but-the-kitchen-sink on your BHI vacation. The full-service Maritime Market makes it easy to stock the fridge with all the comforts of home. The island may be small in size, but we’re not lacking in options to delight your palate, or gift, home and apparel stores to satiate your desire to shop. When it comes to packing clothes, think casual. Shorts and flip-flops cut it just about anywhere you want to go, with the exception of the Bald Head Island Club, where a collared shirt is required in the dining rooms and on the golf course.

haven 15

YOU TOO CAN JOIN THE CLUB(S) To take full advantage of the BHI experience, be sure to request temporary memberships to both the Bald Head Island Club and Shoals Club with your rental property. The Bald Head Island Club offers a breathtakingly beautiful golf course, championship croquet greensward, pool access, tennis, and both casual and formal dining options. The oceanfront Shoals Club boasts the best beach access on the island, two spectacular pools, a fitness room and several dining options, including the upscale Dining Room and poolside Sandbar Grille.

Shoals Club

TURTLES ARE OUR OTHER FAVORITE VISITORS Each summer, along with the sun-seeking vacationers, loggerhead sea turtles arrive on Bald Head Island to lay their nests. Lucky for you, visitors are welcome to tag along with Bald Head Island Conservancy staff on “Turtle Walks.” During these educational programs, visitors can see loggerheads nesting in the wild, or witness baby sea turtles hatching and making their trek to the sea. The Barrier Island Study Center, located on the Conservancy’s campus, lets you learn about our special ecosystem, and if you really want to get your hands dirty, become involved as a “citizen scientist.”

16

YOU WILL BE ON ISLAND TIME BEFORE YOU KNOW IT Residents and seasoned visitors know that after just 24 hours on Bald Head Island, your sense of time starts to loosen up. Maybe it has to do with the 18 mph islandwide speed limit, or the fact that hours are marked by the changing of the tides rather than by meetings and appointments. Whatever the reason, after one visit you’ll find yourself longing to get back on “island time” as soon as possible.

Activity Planner BALD HEAD ISLAND

We know your time on Bald Head Island is precious and you want to squeeze every little drop from it. The island is rife with adventure, from jumping on a paddleboard, to learning our fascinating history, to searching our spectacular beaches for shells. So how do you plan your time? Check out these tips to getting the most out of your BHI vacation, plus the inside scoop on how to live it up like a local.

Seek Out Your Perfect Strand of Beach The island’s 14 miles of pristine beaches beg you to build sandcastles, stroll, swim or just chill. But how do you find the perfect spot for you? South Beach features long stretches of sand and calmer water, perfect for walking and shell seeking. West Beach is the most protected, so you’re liable to find kids playing in the surf. East Beach is where the action is—keep an eye out for boogie boarders and surfers here. Need beach equipment? These tips should help make your day at the shore a breeze.

» If you have a Shoals Club membership, use their beach access

and pick up a towel, umbrella and chair on your way to the beach.

» Riverside Adventure Company rents beach gear like umbrellas, chairs and games (bocce ball, anyone?). Island Hardware also rents chairs and umbrellas.

» Families with kids will appreciate Beach & Baby Equipment Rental. They offer beach carts, chairs and tents, among other

items.

haven 23

also available. Some of their most popular tours are at sunset or under a rising full moon.

Walk on the Wild(life) Side Discover Bald Head Island’s “wild” nature and get up close and personal with some of the island’s lesser known residents and visitors. On any given day you can expect to see a wide variety of birds, marine life, deer and foxes. You might even catch a glimpse of an alligator. One of Bald Head’s more mysterious visitors is the sea turtle—though they nest on the shores, spotting one can be difficult. Your best bet is to sign up with the Bald Head Island Conservancy and get on one of their extremely popular Turtle Walks. In the summer months, the Conservancy’s naturalists and educators take visitors in search of a giant loggerhead turtle laying her nest, or later in the season, a nest hatching. Seeing a nesting sea turtle in action or watching a nest boil and release hundreds of baby turtles is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. INSIDER TIP WANT MORE TURTLE ACTION? SEA TURTLE PATROL LETS YOU RIDE ALONG WITH CONSERVANCY STAFF OR INTERNS AS THEY PATROL 24

THE BEACH FOR NESTING SEA TURTLES. PARTICIPATION IS LIMITED TO TWO PEOPLE, SO RESERVE YOUR SPOT EARLY; THIS IS A MUST-DO FOR NATURE LOVERS.

Get Swept Up in Marsh Madness Sure, Bald Head has amazing beaches, but if you haven’t explored the marsh and creek environment, you’re missing out. The creeks here are easily accessed by kayak and canoe, and experienced naturalists and expert guides can show you the ropes.

» The Bald Head Island

Conservancy offers guided kayak and canoe tours for individuals and small groups. These are perfect for any age or skill level and the Conservancy’s expert naturalists can help identify all of the flora and fauna you see (and trust us, you’ll see a lot).

» The Sail Shop’s guides know their way through the creeks and can help beginner kayakers get started. Self-guided tours are

Want something a little more challenging? Standup Paddleboarding (SUP) is a relatively new sport that’s gaining converts with every trip through the marsh. Paddlers use large boards resembling surfboards and a paddle to maneuver. There’s a learning curve to standing on the board and gaining balance, but it’s fairly quick to master, making this sport popular with all ages and degrees of experience. Coastal Urge is your headquarters for all things SUP on Bald Head Island— rentals, guided excursions and instructional sessions take place at the Board Room, located in the harbor.

OWN THE OCEAN Hanging out on the beach is great, but why not add to your repertoire and try some activities that get you in and on the water?
It just so happens that the North Carolina coast offers some of the best surfing on the Eastern Seaboard. Bring your board or rent a long or short board from the Sail Shop and hang ten on East Beach. If you’re new to surfing, never fear, the Sail Shop’s Surf Camp provides group and private instruction that will have you “dropping in” on your first lesson. If skimming across the surf, shooting over the lip of a wave and catching some air sounds like fun, kiteboarding might be just the sport for you. Coastal Urge offers lessons for those new to the sport. Start your lesson on land learning

flying techniques with a trainer kite, then graduate to Level 1 and learn how to launch your board and get on the water. Level 2 teaches board skills and riding techniques. Sailing more your speed? The Sail Shop offers adult lessons aboard two 26’ J-80 Olympic-

class sailboats, Jive and Joyride. The kids will never forget learning to sail on the creek in one of the small Opti Prams. For a more relaxed experience, try a Fun Sail. An instructor will take you and up to four others for a two-hour tour of the Cape Fear River and along South Beach for views of the island seen by few other visitors.

Embrace Your Inner Explorer Bald Head Island is a wild and mysterious place that begs to be explored. Check out these ideas for stepping off the beaten path:

» Go for a bike ride. Exploring the island’s wynds and ways by bike gives you a whole new perspective. Both Coastal Urge and Riverside Adventure Company rent bikes by the day or longer. Choose between beach cruisers, fitness bikes, tandem bikes, kids’ bikes (with training wheels available if you need them), trailers and baby joggers. Riverside Adventure Company also rents batterypowered electric bikes, if you want the thrill minus the workout.

INSIDER TIP: PADDLE BY THE OLD BOAT HOUSE (CIRCA 1903) ON BALD HEAD CREEK FOR AN UPCLOSE-AND-PERSONAL VIEW OF THIS HISTORIC STRUCTURE.

INSIDER TIP: CATCH A GLIMPSE OF OLD BALDY RISING ABOVE THE FOREST CANOPY FROM #7 ON THE BALD HEAD ISLAND CLUB GOLF COURSE.

» Take a hike. What better way

to explore Bald Head Island’s environments than with a hike through the maritime forest or alongside the marsh? The M. Kent Mitchell Nature Trail (off Federal Road) provides nearly 360˚ views of the marsh and creek. The Bald Head Woods Maritime Forest Preserve offers several trailheads along either side of Federal Road, ranging from easy to moderate. Be sure to check out the Timmons Oak, one of the largest live oaks on the island. If you’re looking for a guided hike, both the Bald Head Island Conservancy and the Sail Shop take groups on short trips or day-long hikes.

INSIDER TIP WHEN YOU’RE TOURING THE ISLAND ON YOUR BIKE, REMEMBER TWO THINGS: ALWAYS WEAR A HELMET, AND BE SURE TO PULL OVER TO THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE ROAD TO ALLOW CARTS AND TRAMS TO PASS.

Hit the Links The gorgeous George Cobbdesigned golf course at the

Bald Head Island Club winds through the forest, under the eye of Old Baldy, and out onto the dune ridge where a 180˚ view of the ocean greets you for the final holes. The course was recently renovated by Tim Cate, and includes redesigned bunkers, expanded fairways and the widespread use of native plants in the landscaping. Can’t-miss holes include Nos. 6 and 7, where Old Baldy watches over the course, and 16, a par three set high on the dune ridge with sweeping ocean views.

» Discover geocaching.

Geocaching, a game where you use a GPS-enabled device to track down a box or “cache” hidden at a set of coordinates, is an awesome way to discover some of the island’s more out-of-the-way spots. Caches range in size from film canisters to larger boxes and contain a sign-in sheet and treasures, with a “take one, leave one” policy. You can go to www.geocaching.com, create an account and upload the dozen geocaches hidden on Bald Head Island to your phone. Riverside Adventure Company also offers a GPS Scavenger Hunt that sends you around the island to a preprogrammed series of coordinates.

Is your swing a little rusty? Don’t worry, an on-site practice facility provides a space to warm up, and PGA professionals on staff can give lessons to youth and adults of all skill levels. Club rentals are also available for a fee. INSIDER TIP GOLFERS MUST HAVE A TEMPORARY OR FULL MEMBERSHIP OR BE THE GUEST OF A MEMBER TO ENJOY GOLF PRIVILEGES. A “STAY AND PLAY” PACKAGE IS ALSO AVAILABLE, GIVING YOU DISCOUNTED ACCOMMODATIONS AND UNLIMITED ACCESS TO THE COURSE FOR THE LENGTH OF YOUR STAY.

Get Sporty Golf not your game? You can still get your sport on.

» Match up for tennis. The

four courts here are surfaced with MondoTen, a rubberized coating that’s easy on the joints but doesn’t impact the spin of the ball. During the summer daily clinics, social activities, private lessons and programs for children three and up are available with one of the United States Professional Tennis Association pros.

» Try your hand at croquet. The championship croquet greensward (fancy name for croquet court) regularly hosts United States Croquet Association tournaments and is the home greensward of several of the nation’s top players. In 2012 the Solomon Cup World Championship was held here. Don’t let any of this scare you off; croquet at the Bald Head Island Club is open to beginners as well as seasoned veterans. All-white attire is required, although lightcolored (tan) attire is permissible for

guests. Check with the staff in the Golf Shop for availability, to arrange lessons, sign up for a clinic or to rent equipment.

» Go for a swim in the pool.

At the Shoals Club, a lap pool overlooks a shallow children’s pool and fountain area. Water aerobics, water Zumba and parent/tot swimming lessons are offered here. The Bald Head Island Club’s heated 25-meter pool includes a slide for children 10 and under, showers, shaded poolside seating, towels, an adjacent restaurant, playground and beach volleyball court. Both pools are open from April to October and full or guest membership to the corresponding club is required.

Cast a Line Fishing on the island can take you from tuna fishing offshore to reeling in red drum in the creeks to bringing home a flounder hooked in the surf.

» From the shore,

flounder, red drum, blue fish, mullet, pompano and more are fair game.

haven 27

» On the creeks you’ll find

speckled trout, grey trout, flounder, red drum, blue fish and spots.

» Offshore fishing trips can

put you on grouper, mackerel, tuna, wahoo, dolphin, tarpon and even some sailfish. A variety of outfitters and guides provide boats and gear, and can pick you up in the harbor.

Step Back in Time Did you know that pirates are said to have once roamed Bald Head Island? That Old Baldy is the oldest lighthouse in the state? That in the early 1900s visitors came to the island to hunt wild pigs? If not, it’s time to study up on your Bald Head Island history.

» Find out the details of

these stories and more on a Historic Tour from the Old Baldy Foundation. The tour gives you a glimpse into the history of Bald Head Island from its first appearance on maps in the 1500s to the Cape Fear Light in the 1950s to the development of the island in the 1980s.

» While you’re there, climb New to fishing? The

Conservancy’s Fishing Bald Head Island program offers tips, techniques and tricks for fishing enthusiasts, while the Thad Wester Fishing School draws crowds every September for instruction from expert fishermen. Riverside Adventure’s Ghost Walks. This

family-friendly ghost experience comes in two flavors—scary and really scary—but don’t be afraid to bring the kids, as they’ll love knowing the secrets of Bald Head Island’s ghosts. Ghost Walks take place regularly throughout the summer—be sure to call for the schedule and to reserve your spot.

Don’t Forget About the Kiddos Kids love Bald Head Island, and why wouldn’t they, with so much to do, see and explore? The Bald Head Island Conservancy’s camps cater to kids 4-14. Preschoolers catch bugs and make crafts, elementary school aged kids go kayaking, crabbing and shell collecting, and middle school aged youth get involved with the Conservancy’s efforts to protect the island by collecting data and analyzing it to help further the Conservancy’s research. The Shoals Club Recreation Department offers a variety of family-friendly activities throughout the season, including “dive-in”

movies, volleyball and bocce tournaments, games around the pool, and tie-dyeing T-shirts. The Bald Head Island Club’s summer camp program for children 5-12 includes weekly golf and tennis instruction, daily swimming, arts and crafts, indoor and outdoor games, team activities, movies and field trips. The Club also offers junior golf camps and junior tennis programs throughout the summer. All About Art’s programs, including a half-day art camp, are suitable for kids of all ages. Mermaid and dragon painting classes are ideal for older children, while “precious impressionists” is geared toward younger kids. Riverside Adventure Company is home to the popular Children’s Treasure Hunt, which takes kids ages 5-12 aboard the pirate ship LUNA SEA as they solve riddles, sing songs, and use science and nature to piece together a map that leads to buried treasure. The Sunset Celebration, also from the folks at Riverside Adventure, happens in the harbor every Wednesday evening during the summer. Festivities start at Riverside’s headquarters with a DJ, juggling, puppet show and games, then move to Beach Access #5 for s’mores, storytelling, a drum circle, and of course, a beautiful BHI sunset.

From Harbour Village to the Cape Fear Point, Jim Brown Represents All the Homes and Homesites the Island Has to Offer. Jim first visited Bald Head Island in 1975 and was taken with the beauty of the island and its development potential. He began his association with the developers of Bald Head Island in 1991 as property manager and switched to real estate sales in 1995. Jim loves sharing the island with families, who he says come here to unwind and get reacquainted. Honesty, integrity and market knowledge position him to take care of each family’s individual real estate needs. “Our property on Bald Head Island had previously been listed with another agency, but did not sell. After listing with Jim Brown, we were successful in the first season. We live in Colorado and Jim was very helpful coordinating all aspects of the sale, including the land survey and wetland mapping. We really do appreciate everything Jim did for us.” Stanley and Karen Kitzmiller, Crested Butte, CO

“Jim has a rare quality in a realtor: He can find out what a customer wants, even when the customer himself doesn’t know. That was our case. By taking us seriously as buyers from the first moment, and by trying to answer our every question and accommodate our every request, he helped us understand what we really wanted. Needless to say, we bought it.” J I M B ROW N

COME ONE. COME ALL.

WHEN BALD HEAD ISLANDER HARPER PETERSON THROWS A PARTY, YOU NEVER KNOW WHO’S GOING TO SHOW UP. WHICH, OF COURSE, IS PART OF THE FUN. AS IT TURNS OUT, WHEN HARPER STARTED THROWING HIS WEDNESDAY NIGHT SUNSET CELEBRATION PARTIES NEAR THE HARBOR LAST MAY, PRETTY MUCH EVERYONE SHOWED UP. By Lauren Frye | Photos by Joshua Curry, Walker Golder and Jack Upton

"Traditions are big on Bald Head Island, and I wanted to start one that would get everyone—I’m talking three or four generations—celebrating together,” says

Harper. Bald Head Island entrepreneur by day, party planner by night, Harper, along with his wife, Plunkett Dodge, own multiple island businesses, including Riverside Adventure Company, Delphina Cantina, The Sail Shop, Canopy Outfitters, Maritime Passage and Will o’ the Wisp. So, you might be wondering, how do they also have the time to put on this grand weekly shindig? It’s all about priorities.

ABOVE: The drum circle is a popular draw for kids and adults alike. FACING PAGE: Music, arts and crafts, and a puppet show keep the lively crowd entertained.

“Connecting and celebrating with friends and family is so important,” Harper says, “and we

make it a priority to facilitate that on the island.”

Harper’s inspiration for the Sunset Celebration came from a similar gathering he had

attended in Key West, Fla. While Key West holds their sunset parties every night, Harper scaled his model back to fit “Bald Head Island time,” i.e., once a week. Both Key West and Bald Head Island have west-facing beaches, allowing for an East Coast rarity: a view of the sun setting over the ocean.

40

42

“We’ve been on Bald Head for more than 30 years, which means we’ve been watching the sun set on West Beach for a long time,” laughs Harper. “We wanted to share that experience with everyone who sets foot on the island.”

Like the Key West parties, Harper’s Sunset Celebration features music, performers and

a carnival-like atmosphere that spectators find infectious. On any given Wednesday during the summer, jugglers and face painters delight the crowd. The puppet theater draws the young and young-at-heart to its sometimes silly but always entertaining productions, while the drum circle brings out the aspiring musicians in the crowd. If you’re lucky, you might see a pirate or two milling about.

One of the biggest draws is DJ Fray, the affable guy behind the turntables who gets the

crowd moving and keeps them grooving until long past sunset. “Fray is a reggae DJ, but on Wednesday nights he plays a little bit of everything,” says Harper. “I just love to see grandparents

and kids out there together, showing off their moves. It’s the best!”

to leave the party so soon, but don’t worry, you’re not really leaving. The fun is just relocating. On West Beach, the drum circle continues and a fire for making s’mores brings out the kid in everyone. If you stay long enough, you might get to see a swordfight between pirates—the start of Riverside Adventure’s famous ghost walk.

WHEN: Every Wednesday night from Memorial Day through Labor Day, starting at 5:30 p.m. Come early to enjoy a wine tasting on the porch of Bald Head Island Limited Real Estate Sales.

When the sun begins to set, the action moves to West Beach. You might be reluctant

“Our goal was to create an event that would bring the whole island together,” says Harper.

“It surprised me just how organically it happened. What we learned was, people are looking to interact and connect. We just provided a fun place to do it.”

WHERE: Starting at the lot between Riverside Adventure Company and Delphina, then moving to West Beach around 7 p.m. as the sun starts to set. WHO: Hosted by the folks at

Riverside Adventure Company and Delphina Cantina and sponsored by Bald Head Island Limited Real Estate Sales.

WHY: Because it’s the most fun you’ve had on a Wednesday night in a long time!

ABOVE: The Ghost Walk begins on West Beach with a pirate showdown. TOP LEFT: The drum circle continues, inspiring families to break out in dance. FACING PAGE: Making s’mores over an open fire is an iconic summer experience.

DOG'S WORLD A F TER A L L B Y L A U R E N F R YE

IF YOU’VE VISITED BALD HEAD ISLAND THEN YOU KNOW THIS PLACE IS AS POPULAR WITH DOGS AS IT IS WITH HUMANS. WHETHER ON THE FERRY, AT THE BEACH, OR CRUISING DOWN THE ROAD, FURRY FRIENDS ARE EVERYWHERE. THAT’S BECAUSE DOGS ARE MORE THAN JUST WELCOME HERE—THEY’RE VICs (VERY IMPORTANT CANINES).

PHOTOGRAPHY BY HARRY TAYLOR

haven 51

It’s a clear June evening on Bald Head Island and from the looks of it, there’s a dog party raging on West Beach. Dogs big and small tear pell-mell down the length of the sand and back. Dogs bound into the water chasing sticks, Frisbees, each other. Dogs roll in the sand, dig holes, bury leashes and kids’ toys. Everywhere, terriers and hounds and shepherds alike run free, checking back every now and then for their humans to make sure they’re watching. They are, of course. In fact, these humans are doing more than just watching; they’re experiencing a particular type of joy specific to proud pet owners. They’re calling to their pooches and snapping photos. They’re introducing themselves to the other humans and pointing out which dog they belong to, discussing breeds and temperament and tricks. Above all, they’re watching their furry friends cavorting with other island pups with a mix of pride and sheer delight, and for just a moment, they’re getting a dog’s eye view of their favorite island. Everyone is here for the first official doggie meet-up on Bald Head Island, although to hear the planning going on between the humans, it won’t be the last. “We need to do this monthly,” island resident Cindy Early says emphatically. From the collective round of approval that meets her statement, it’s a safe bet these dogs and their humans will find themselves here again soon.

The doggie meet-up on West Beach was a huge success, with dogs of all breeds, shapes and sizes showing up to show off for the cameras and each other.

Dog Heaven

Cathy and Nikki

Cindy and Dakota

Cindy lives in the harbor with her husband Darryl and their uber-friendly five-and-a-half-year-old blonde lab, Dakota. Longtime Bald Head Island property owners and vacationers, Cindy and Darryl moved to the island full time in 2010. “Of course we love living on the island,” says Cindy, “but I think Dakota is the biggest BHI fan of all. Let’s face it, Bald Head is dog heaven!” She admits that Dakota’s fondness for the island may have something to do with his extroverted nature. “We used to live on 18 acres, which Dakota loved because he could run and play wherever he wanted. But he’s happier here, where he can see and visit with other dogs every day,” she says. “Not to mention the beach—this dog loves the water.” Like many devoted dog owners, Cindy’s daily routine revolves around Dakota’s. “When I get home from work, Dakota immediately goes and gets the leash so I can take him to the beach,” explains Cindy. “I let him swim and chase bait fish for a while, then we walk all the way to the ferry entrance to watch the boats come in and play with other dogs that happen by. I can’t think of a better way to unwind at the end of the day.” Since moving to Bald Head, Cindy and Dakota have both made some great friends. “I’ve met so many wonderful people here because of our dogs,” she says. “You meet folks with dogs everywhere you go on the island, and before you know it the dogs are playing, the humans start chatting, and you’ve made a new friend.” These sentiments are echoed by Cathy Sigal, a full-time New Yorker who owns a vacation home in Cape Fear Station. When Cathy comes to Bald Head to escape the hustle and bustle, she’s always got her sweet daschund Nikki in tow. “The Bald Head community loves dogs and has created a truly dog-friendly environment,” explains Cathy. “Beaches we’ve visited in the Northeast restrict dogs during the summer, whereas on Bald Head we are free to bring our dog to the beach anytime. That’s really important to me.” Cathy says the island’s miles of beaches are the perfect spot for Nikki to swim and run freely, and she appreciates the way the dunes provide a natural barrier. “The paths in the maritime forest are also really wonderful for dog walks,” says Cathy. “Nikki totally loves exploring and getting out in the woods, something she doesn’t have back home in New York.” In fact, according to Cathy, while in New York, Nikki refuses to so much as step in a puddle or walk on a wet sidewalk. The moment she gets to Bald Head, however, she’s splashing in the surf like a pro. Nikki’s other favorite island pastime is riding in the golf cart. “I think ALL dogs love riding in golf carts—it’s like a doggie safari! What could be better?” Cathy laughs.

Working Like Dogs In addition to spotting dogs on the beach, Bald Head Island visitors can expect to meet some very special pups in and around the island’s various businesses. Jane Baldridge, Marketing Coordinator for the Bald Head Island Conservancy, has her dog Roux Calypso with her at work every day, and has for the past three years. Jane started bringing Roux to the island when she worked at Turtle Central and says Roux adored her “job” there. “She greeted everyone who entered, and she especially loved the attention she got from the kids who came in the shop,” says Jane. Roux’s time in the shop endeared her to many families, and Jane reports she still gets messages from visitors wanting to make sure Roux will be on island during their stay. “Many people now know where to find her in our new offices, and come in bearing cookies and gifts,” she says. “Roux has a lot of friends!” Jane describes Roux as a friendly, gentle dog who is also part pirate, which explains the “Calypso” in her name. “When we walk down the dock and Roux sees a boat she likes, she just gets on!” laughs Jane. A quick tour of island businesses shows that Jane and Roux aren’t alone. If you’re lucky, you might get to meet the friendly pooches that “work” at Island Hardware, Riverside Adventure or the Sail Shop (and don’t forget to fill your pockets with cookies before you head out!).

Roux Calypso

The Legend of Captain Jack Longtime Bald Head Island residents and visitors will likely remember one of the finest (and largest!) dogs who has called BHI home: Captain Jack Lightfoot. Captain Jack, a Great Dane, spent nine years on Bald Head with owners Bill Waddell and Emily Hill, until he passed in 2008. “He grew up here, knew everyone and was the most affectionate and happy guy you could ever hope to meet,” says Bill. “No one was a stranger to Captain Jack.” The loveable Dane got to show off this affectionate nature as an island working dog when Bill volunteered for several years at Old Baldy. “I always got a kick when visitors came through the door and saw the Captain stretched out on the floor. Their eyes popped, especially kids, who would then crawl all over him,” recalls Bill. “He ate it up!” As you might imagine, Captain Jack got a lot of attention because of his size (180 lbs. to be exact) and his unique way of riding in the golf cart. “He sat on the seat with his front feet on the floor,” Bill explains. “When you looked at the cart from the side, he literally filled the front seat. Folks would point and laugh, and he would look at them solemnly as if to say, ‘Well, how would you expect a big dog to sit in this little thing?’”

Bill Waddell and Molly haven 57

Bill and Emily now have Molly, a gorgeous six-year-old black and white Great Dane, who also has the privilege of growing up on Bald Head Island. “Molly also loves people,” says Bill. “She’s a real sweetheart.” Jack’s legacy lives on through the funny and sweet stories islanders still tell about him. “When Jack passed, we received condolences from all over the country, but perhaps an island friend said it best: ‘Born a dog, died a gentleman.’”

Dakota, the friendly blonde lab who’s been charging through the water for the better part of an hour, simply lies down in the surf for a much deserved rest. “He must have really had fun,” says Cindy. “I don’t think I’ve ever seen him lie down at the beach!” From the looks of Dakota and all the dogs now heading out for the evening—a bit sandy and wet, but undeniably content— she’s right. “Sometimes I wish I was a dog on Bald Head Island,” laughs Cindy. “They’ve really got the life!”

Living a Dog’s Life Back at the meet-up, the sun is setting on West Beach and the dog party begins to wind down. Some folks have rounded up their canine companions and headed home for dinner, while others make plans for the next doggie play date. Tired but happy pups prance in the shallow waves, no longer strangers but now friends for life.

58

Editors’ Note: We’ d like to sincerely thank everyone who sent us stories about and photos of your island dogs. We loved getting to know the distinct personalities and see the sweet faces of each pup. A big thanks also to everyone who showed up at the doggie meet-up, which, as you can see, was a blast.

YOUR BEACH VACATION HEADQUARTERS BY DAY OR NIGHT. You want your Bald Head Island vacation to be relaxing but action-packed, casual yet sophisticated. YOUR COMPREHENSIVE GUIDE TO DINING OUT ON BALD HEAD ISLAND

Delphina Cantina Now in its second year, Delphina Cantina brings the fresh flavors of Latin cuisine to Bald Head Island. Located in the harbor in the former River Pilot Café, this lively restaurant serves Mexican food with a Spanish and Cuban flair.

MoJo’s on the Harbor Dining al fresco at MoJo’s on the Harbor is hard to beat. Weather permitting, grab a table overlooking the harbor for lunch or dinner. As you might expect from a restaurant situated on the water, MoJo’s has a large selection of seafood dishes. At lunch, the fish taco is fresh and served with citrus slaw. At dinner, the overflowing crab pot, saffron mahi mahi and fried seafood baskets offer enough variety to satisfy your seafood cravings.

Signature dishes like carnitas al horno—pork braised in house-made adobo sauce served with braised jalapeño cabbage and Dijon mustard mashed potatoes—show off the chef’s deep knowledge of authentic Latin cuisine. Tasty quesadillas, Baja chicken salad and fish tacos balance out the menu with more familiar options. Don’t miss the elotero corn—grilled corn on the cob, roasted garlic aioli, cotija cheese and tajin chili. It’s to die for.

In the mood for something from the land? MoJo’s salads, burgers, and huge selection of pasta and other Italian dishes round out the menu.

Homemade desserts, a kids menu and an extensive beer and wine list make Delphina an excellent choice for dinner or lunch.

Sandpiper Ice Cream & Coffee Located next to Delphina, this cozy shop with seating overlooking the river offers all the amenities of a ‘big city’ coffee emporium. Open at 7 a.m. daily, Sandpiper offers premium coffee, lattes and espressos from Java Estate Roasters, as well as a selection of fresh homemade pastries, baked daily. Beginning in the spring of 2014, expect a special breakfast menu, including pancakes from scratch, eggs the way you like them, fresh fruit, granola and more. If you’re treating yourself, grab a scoop of your favorite homemade ice cream flavor or milkshake.

Maritime Market Café Grab breakfast or lunch (or both) at the Maritime Market Café, located inside the Maritime Market. Breakfast options include classics like pancakes and breakfast biscuits, or try one of the daily specials like stuffed French toast or the chef’s take on eggs Benedict. Lunch includes a selection of sandwiches and pizzas (by the slice or the pie) as well as daily specials. The Market also serves ice cream at a walk-up window on the deck outside, and serves coffee inside. For those nights you want to cook in, everything you need is next door in the adjacent Maritime Market. In addition to a great selection of meats and seafood, you’ll find fresh produce, a deli counter and a fantastic selection of wines.

M I AM I V I CE Inspired by the Harbor Bar at MoJo’s Crush one cup of ice in blender, then add 1 oz. pineapple juice, 1 oz. Coco Lopez and ½ oz. half & half. To that, add a shot of your favorite rum. Blend until smooth and pour into a 16 oz. glass. Crush another cup of ice in blender and add 1-2 oz. strawberry purée, some fresh squeezed lime juice, and simple syrup to sweeten to taste. Add another shot of rum. Pour on top of pineapple/Coco Lopez mixture. Finish with a float of Bacardi 131. Enjoy poolside, beachside, or wherever you like.

The Harbor Bar at MoJo’s offers a full bar with a wide selection of local and craft-brewed beer on tap, and their wine list is extensive. During the summer live music on the deck and karaoke provide great family-friendly entertainment.

Mike’s Bites Located in front of the Bald Head Island Conservancy in one of the buildings original to the Cape Fear Light, Mike’s Bites makes it easy to grab something and head to the beach. Serving snacks, fresh sandwiches (with bread baked daily), drinks and frozen treats, Mike’s is the closest thing to a drive-through you’ll find on the island. Stop in for a treat or something to tide you over until dinner, or grab a sandwich for the road. Open seasonally.

Will o’ the Wisp Located harborside adjacent to the Sail Shop, Will o’ the Wisp is the perfect place to watch the sun set or wait for the ferry home while you enjoy a drink with the breeze in your hair. Casual and laid back, Will o’ the Wisp serves wine, beer, and snacks such as gourmet popcorn and Luna Pops. Open seasonally.

Shoals Club

Bald Head Island Club The Bald Head Island Club offers three distinct dining venues: the casual poolside Pelicatessen, the pub-style Palms, and the Grille, the Club’s primary dining venue. Full or temporary membership at the Bald Head Island Club is required to dine.

For the best views on the island, dine at the Shoals Club. Situated at The Point of Cape Fear, the dining room, lounge and terrace of the Shoals Club, as well as the poolside Sandbar Grille, overlook East and South Beaches and Frying Pan Shoals. Full or temporary membership is required to dine.

The Palms and Palms Terrace

The Dining Room and Lounge

The more casual Palms features panoramic views of the croquet greenswards and holes #10 and #18. The relaxed social setting is an ideal place to enjoy a cold beverage after a round of golf or grab an informal lunch or dinner. The Palms serves a full bar and pub-style menu, with items like grilled chicken wings and mussels diablo helping to kick the typical bar-fare menu up a notch. A selection of soups, salads, sandwiches and entrees make for a versatile menu. Go with the Carolina barbecue pork sandwich or a crab cake sandwich for some local flavor at lunch. Or try something internationally inspired like the fish tacos or quesadilla stuffed with cheese, ancho chicken, tequila shrimp or chipotle beef.

The Grille Overlooking the golf course, The Grille is open for lunch and dinner daily for much of the year. During lunch The Palms’s menu is served here, but for dinner, a unique menu is served. Dinner at The Grille is upscale, featuring a selection of seafood and meat dishes that use as many local ingredients as possible. When they’re in season, the oysters—which come fried, baked or raw on the half-shell—are a great way to begin. Entrees are divided into “From the Farm and Garden” and “From the Sea,” and both sections offer dishes you’ll be back for. The cast iron seared pork chop, grouper saltimbocca and BHI crab cakes are standout items. If you saved room for dessert, you won’t regret indulging in the house-made brownie.

The Pelicatessen The Pelicatessen—or the Peli, for those in the know—serves breakfast, lunch and dinner seven days a week. Located beside the pool, they’re the lunch spot of choice for swimmers as their menu of sandwiches, pizzas, salads, and kid-friendly items like grilled cheese sandwiches and chicken fingers make it easy to grab a bite. Take care of your pizza craving with a 9” personal or 16” pie to share. Get creative with specialty pie toppings like the Greek Vegetarian and the BBQ Chicken or create your own. Gluten free options available. Grab a sweet treat of house-made ice cream or try a Nye’s Ice Cream Sandwich—fresh-baked cookies outside and homemade ice cream inside—in fun flavors like strawberry shortcake and peppermint chocolate.

66

CR AB D E V I LE D E GGS Inspired by the Latitudes Wine Bar lite bites menu 12 large eggs 1 Tb. Dijon mustard ½ C. mayonnaise ¼ C. minced red onion ¼ C. cooked bacon, chopped fine ½ lb. crab meat 1 oz. minced chives Salt & pepper to taste Place eggs in a pot with enough cold water to cover and bring to boil. Remove from heat, cover and let stand 10-12 minutes. Remove and place under cold running water until eggs are cool. Peel and halve eggs. Remove yolks and place in a mixing bowl with all other ingredients except crab. Mix well. Gently fold crab meat into mixture. Spoon filling into egg whites and chill until ready to serve. Yields 24.

In the Dining Room, the chef serves an upscale menu that reflects the bounty of the season. Many of the items are Southerninspired, but the chef isn’t afraid to stretch and get creative. Seafood bouillabaisse, CAB filet and grilled lobster are can’t-miss menu staples. Diners under 12 can enjoy a kidfriendly menu that includes tenderloin tips, pizza and chicken tenders with basmati rice. Dining in the Lounge is a more relaxed experience and the menu offerings reflect this. Try the juicy prime rib sandwich with black & tan onion rings or the shrimp & grits served with green tomato chow chow. A full bar and expansive wine and beer selections round out the meal.

JUST AS EVERY SINGLE SHELL ON THE BEACH IS ONE-OF-A-KIND, SO IS EVERY HOME ON BALD HEAD ISLAND. TAKE A PEEK INSIDE THREE DISTINCTLY RENOVATED ISLAND HOMES AND LEARN HOW THESE CREATIVE HOMEOWNERS WERE ABLE TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE REMODELING PROCESS TO CREATE THEIR IDEAL LIVING SPACES.

hen interior designer Lisa Sherry and

husband Ron Royals embarked on their

search for a vacation home on Bald

Head Island, they looked at a lot of houses. “We didn’t necessarily have an exact idea of what we were looking for, but we were sure we’d know the house when we saw it,” says Lisa. Turns out she was right; the moment they laid eyes on the funky, 70s-era modern bungalow set deep in Bald Head Island’s maritime forest, they knew it was “the one.”

“The architecture was so interesting, unlike

anything else we’d seen on the island. I immediately had a vision of what I could do with the space,” says Lisa. “We also loved the lot with the incredible view of the lagoon. The maritime forest environment is so distinct.”

They purchased the house in 2004 and lived

with it “as is” for a year before beginning renovations. Lisa and Ron made this decision both to conserve their remodel budget and to get a better sense of which elements needed structural overhaul and

LISA, AN INTERIOR DESIGNER, DESCRIBES HER DESIGN ESTHETIC AS “CLASSIC MODERN,” WHICH SHE ACHIEVES BY MIXING AND MATCHING INTERESTING PIECES FROM DIFFERENT PERIODS. 76

LISA AND RON ADDED TWO WINDOWS TO THE ANGLED WALL IN THE DINING ROOM TO ALLOW FOR VIEWS OF THE BEAUTIFUL LAGOON BEYOND THE SCREENED PORCH. THE WINDOWS ALSO ADD NATURAL LIGHT TO THE ROOM.

which could be solved through less invasive means. They ultimately decided to remodel the bathrooms and kitchen/dining area, while the remainder of the transformation was achieved with some paint and Lisa’s flawless design eye.

The exposed cedar wood walls that ran

through the house looked dated, so Lisa’s first step was to paint them (and most everything else in the house, including the fireplace) white. “The whole space needed to be lightened and freshened up,” she says. “White is very calming. We lead busy lives, so when we get to Bald Head, we want to enter our home and immediately be in the realm of calmness.”

Lisa often uses white as a base because

it also allows her to pile on texture and color for interest. “I love using natural textures like linen, leather, rattan, and sea grass to warm up a space,” Lisa says. “A neutral base also makes redecorating easier. As trends emerge, you can switch out pillows and fabric without having to redo the entire room.”

Lisa’s mix and match approach also extends

to style. “I’m an eclectic designer, so I don’t like to match pieces from the same period. I love mixing modern and antique to create a totally original look,” she says.

Large vertical spaces allow for unique accents like Lisa’s Union Jack flag and vintage ladder.

LISA’S 1960S BUBBLE CHAIR ADDS A FUN ELEMENT TO THE HOUSE. “IT’S LARGE BUT IT’S CLEAR, SO IT DOESN’T TAKE UP ANY VISUAL SPACE IN THE ROOM,” SAYS LISA. 80

iffany and Fred McWhorter live and work full time on Bald Head Island, so it’s important that their home be both functional and

comfortable. When they bought the house in 2000 it was, in Tiffany’s words, “a total mess,” but luckily the McWhorters love a good challenge.

“We started out small with the renovation—

stripping wallpaper and carpets, adding bead board to the walls, changing out doors,” says Tiffany. A few years later they began tackling larger projects, including adding two bathrooms, remodeling the kitchen and relocating the front door from ground level to the main living area.

When it came to décor, Tiffany wanted her

home to tell a story. “I like things with history, a good story or provenance,” she says. And there’s a story behind almost everything in the house, like the old farm sink she and Fred dragged out of a yard in Southport (with the owners’ blessing of course) or the discarded Eb & Flo’s bar sign she found in the recycling bin. “These stories personalize a home,” she says, “and infuse it with memories.”

TIFFANY OWNS AND RUNS ROOM SERVICE, A HOME FURNISHING AND DÉCOR SHOP, WHICH MAKES IT EASY TO PLAY WITH DECORATING. “I LOVE THAT I CAN TRY DIFFERENT PIECES BEFORE I DECIDE WHAT’S GOING TO BE A KEEPER,” SHE SAYS. 82

Repurposed antique pieces create an impressive dining room table.

Tiffany, who has lived and worked on the island since 1999, was familiar with the property before she decided to purchase it. “The house was on a rental program and I visited a friend who was staying there once. I remember walking in and thinking, ‘This is the worst house on the island! There is nothing you could do to make it better.’”

Fast forward a few years and one change of heart later and Tiffany says she can’t image living

in any other house. “We’ve had Easter egg hunts in the front yard, spent many Thanksgivings and Christmases here, just so many great memories in this place,” she says.

etting the maximum usage out of her Villa’s 1,200-square feet was paramount to Jennifer Evans when

she decided to buy and renovate the unit. “I loved the location of the Villas, right across from the beach, but I was concerned about the size because I wanted everyone to be able to have privacy.”

To accommodate herself and her two teenage

children comfortably, Jennifer began reimagining the interior space. She called on builder Steve Henson and interior designer and friend Shannon Mann for assistance. “The upstairs bedroom in the Villas is traditionally the guest room, but we decided to turn it into the master,” she says. “We had to get creative with the bathroom to make it work, but we were able to create a true master bath by getting rid of the closet.” To make up for the loss of storage, Steve created a wall of built-in cabinetry that uses the limited space efficiently and creates visual interest in the room.

In addition to making adjustments to the interior,

JENNIFER (CENTER) WITH DESIGNER SHANNON MANN (LEFT) AND BUILDER STEVE HENSON (RIGHT) WORKED TOGETHER TO TAKE MAXIMUM ADVANTAGE OF THE VILLA’S UNIQUE LAYOUT AND LOCATION. 86

BAMBOO WINDOW COVERINGS PROVIDE AN ECONOMICAL AND SIMPLE WAY TO ADD PRIVACY AND SHADE TO THE DECK. THE LARGE BED-SWING IS AN IDEAL SPOT TO HANG OUT AND READ OR WATCH FOR GATORS IN THE LAGOONS.

JENNIFER AND SHANNON MADE THE MOST OF A SMALL LIVING AREA BY ADDING A SECTIONAL SOFA AND KEEPING THE REST OF THE FURNITURE TO A MINIMUM. COASTAL TOUCHES LIKE THE DRIFTWOOD “MANTLE” REMIND GUESTS THEY’RE AT THE BEACH.

88

Jennifer was able to add more living space by updating the deck, which now doubles as a second living room. “We spend a lot of time outside,” Jennifer says. “On nice evenings we love to be on the deck watching the sun set and enjoying being in such a tranquil space.” The addition of an outside bar makes the deck ideal for entertaining or dining al fresco.

In the kitchen, Jennifer wanted a sophisticated

look that was still highly functional. It was also important to her to eliminate visual clutter, which can be a challenge in small spaces. Adding an island allowed Jennifer to have a built-in dining table and additional workspace, all in one unit. “The island was built to look like a furniture piece, which I love, but it

has all the durability and function of a built-in.”

Jennifer, who lives in Texas, rents out her Villa

when she’s not using it, making the need for an efficiently designed space even more important. “I don’t want renters to have to navigate clutter,” she says. “I want them to feel at home in a clean, sophisticated space that allows them to relax and enjoy what they came here for.”

CLEVER BUILT-IN FEATURES LIKE THIS DESK ALLOW JENNIFER TO HAVE ALL THE COMFORTS OF HOME WHILE MAXIMIZING SPACE. MATCHING BUILT-IN DRESSERS KEEP THE BEDROOM FROM BEING OVERWHELMED BY FURNITURE. haven 89

Work with a Real Estate Sales Professional Who Islanders Trust. Many of Garrett Albertson’s new clients come as referrals from Bald Head Island property owners. They are owners he’s matched with the right home or homesite, owners he’s provided assistance to after the sale, and owners whose properties he’s successfully listed and sold.

“Those who know Gary, know that he is interested in more than sales. He’s interested in you. He is passionate about helping you to find your perfect fit.” –Bald Head Island resident

“Our home had been listed for three years. There was more activity in our first two months with Garrett, and it sold!” –Former owners, Columbus, OH

For Garrett, serving others comes naturally. Before that, he spent forty years devoted to ministry in Presbyterian churches in Philadelphia, Boston, Pittsburgh and New York. From time to time, you can still find him conducting services or wedding ceremonies at the island’s Village Chapel.

What’s Old is New Again Photos by Theo Milo The Leaman and Zeizel families have been connected for almost 40 years, since Kay and Sam Leaman met Art and Joan Zeizel in a Lamaze class when both couples were expecting their first child. The families grew—the Zeizels had three sons and the Leamans two daughters—along with the friendship, and they soon started taking summer vacations together on Bald Head Island. In fact, 2014 marks the 29th consecutive year that the two families have vacationed together on BHI. Things have changed a little since the mid-80s, both with the island with the families. The five kids collected spouses and children of their own, and while the party of nine used to stay together in one house, the group of 18 now stays in two houses with crofters. Some things remain the same though—they continue the traditions of morning walks to the Point, afternoon swims in the surf, big family dinners in the evenings, and turtle walks at night. The traditions extend to photography, as both families have been vigilant about documenting these vacations on film. We decided to have a little fun by recreating a few of our favorite vintage images. The “kids” cheerfully grumbled as we lined them up in front of the lighthouse for their annual photo shoot, and getting them all on one golf cart produced howls of laughter from the rest of the group. As you can see, some things have changed, but the smiling faces and strong bonds have endured.

Bald Head Island is a photographer's heaven, with endless photo ops around every turn. For this haven shoot, the assignment was simple. We asked one of our longtime photographers, Walker Golder, to give his take on the island’s environments, but with one twist: to bring his 10-year-old son Will along for the ride with a camera. haven 109

legends and lore

Bringing Home the Light

An ambitious plan to expand the Old Baldy Foundation campus promises to illuminate the past By Christi Golder From its humble exterior, you’d never know that the small cottage at the base of Old Baldy Lighthouse is the unofficial “welcome center” for 28,000 annual visitors to Bald Head Island. At less than 1,000 square feet, the cottage serves as a gift shop, Smith Island Museum of History, and offices for the Old Baldy Foundation, which was established in 1985 to maintain and preserve the island’s lighthouse. “Over the years, our mission has expanded from simply preserving the lighthouse to being the cultural and historical custodians of Bald Head Island,” says Mary Beth Springmeier, the Old Baldy Foundation’s executive director. Simply put, the Foundation and its museum have outgrown their space.

Recently, the Foundation announced plans to expand its campus near the base of the lighthouse, to include the construction of a new Interpretive Center inspired by the keeper’s cottage that once stood on the site, as well as an adjacent crofter cottage that will be used for storage. As its centerpiece,

the Interpretive Center will house the First Order Fresnel Lens and one-of-a-kind floating pedestal base from the Cape Fear Light, which once stood on the eastern tip of the island. In 1958, the light was decommissioned and demolished, but the lens was spared. Labriola’s, an antique shop just up the road in Wilmington, sold off portions of the lens piece by piece over several decades. The Foundation has spent several years working to gather back many of the individual prisms and bull’s eye panels. “The Fresnel Lens is the ‘diamond’ from our collection that will finally be coming out of storage and put on display for all to see,” says Mary Beth. Along with exhibiting the lens and various other artifacts from the Foundation’s

Fundraising efforts are now underway to construct a much-needed new Interpretive Center adjacent to Old Baldy Lighthouse.

collection, the Center will house staff offices and an expanded gift shop, freeing up the existing gift shop to be used as additional museum and research library space. “This project truly represents the completion of our master plan,” says island resident and Old Baldy Foundation President Chris Webb. "It will enable us to not only continue to preserve and protect Old Baldy, but also to preserve the other early history of the island." “We want to bring the past to life using today’s technology,” says Mary Beth. “So much of the island’s history can be told through audio recordings and video displays. We want the Center to allow visitors to be transported to the past and immersed in the island’s stories.” The Foundation estimates it will need to raise nearly a million dollars for the campus expansion. Because the Foundation receives no funds from government agencies, including the National Park Service and State Parks, it relies solely on the generosity and continued support of private donors. “We have a running start with our fundraising efforts, thanks to generous contributions from the Cynthia and George Mitchell Foundation, Bald Head Island Limited, and the F.M. Kirby Foundation,” says Chris. “We’re now asking our broader base of island property owners and vacationers to step forward to help us reach this goal.” Contributors to the Foundation’s “Bringing Home the Light” fundraiser can know that they have helped achieve

two important objectives. First, donors will dramatically enhance the experience for island visitors—be they vacationers, property owners, or school children traveling from surrounding areas. Secondly, they will ensure that future generations will know the island’s stories. Those stories include the heroic tales of lifesaving serviceman Dunbar Davis, who saved shipwrecked mariners from certain death, and of Captain Charlie Swan, who faithfully served as keeper of the Cape Fear Light for three decades. They include the accounts Confederate soldiers wrote of their days spent at the island’s Fort Holmes, aiding the blockade runners headed upriver to Wilmington, and of river pilots who fiercely competed for the chance to bring ships safely to port. They even include the adventures of “The Generator Society,” the 20 or so families with homes on the island in the 1970s, who had to rely on generators for power, and whose campfire parties at the Cape Fear Point are the stuff of legend. “There will be a loss and disconnect of history if we don’t join together to collect, preserve and share the island’s stories now, while we have the chance,” says Mary Beth. “Old Baldy Lighthouse celebrates its 200th birthday in 2017. What could be a more fitting party than the grand opening of our expanded campus?” To learn more about the Old Baldy Foundation’s fundraising efforts and find out how you can help them complete their master plan, visit www.oldbaldy.org or call 910-457-7481.

The Cape Fear Lighthouse Lens A First Order Fresnel Lens, such as the one installed at the top of the Cape Fear Lighthouse, was designed for coastal locations where the light had to shine far out to sea. The 12,000-pound lens and base measured over 15 feet tall, and contained 528 glass prisms and 24 flash panels mounted with exact precision into brass frames.

In 1902 the magnificent lens began a

circuitous journey from the factory of Henry Lepaute in France to Bald Head Island. It is believed, but not yet confirmed, that the lens was first sent to St. Louis as an exhibit at the World’s Fair. Upon its return to the East Coast, it was installed at the top of the new Cape Fear Light to warn ships about Frying Pan Shoals, sandbars that stretch for almost 30 miles out to sea. The lens remained there, lovingly

tended by the keepers of the lighthouse, until the light was demolished in 1958.

The story of the lens didn’t end there.

Prior to the lighthouse’s demolition, the lens was taken to an antique shop in Wilmington, N.C., where some of its components were sold over time. In 2009 the Old Baldy Foundation Interpretive Center

Keeper's Cottage

purchased the remaining prisms and panels and brought them back to Bald Head Island. After more than 50 years, the Cape Fear

On my own salvation and why Dostoyevsky was only half right

last word

by Josh Durham

“You must know that there is nothing higher and stronger and more wholesome and good for life in the future than some good memory, especially a memory of childhood, of home. People talk to you a great deal about your education, but some good, sacred memory, preserved from childhood, is perhaps the best education. If a man carries many such memories with him into life, he is safe to the end of his day. And even if only one good memory is left in our hearts, it may also be the instrument of our salvation one day.”

— F YO D O R D O S T OY E V S K Y

I

’ve thought about this quote and my own childhood a lot in recent years, because that appears to be what you do as the years pass. You look back on the road traveled and you take stock of where you are and how far you have come. With each year that falls behind me, I find myself doing this more and more. I admit with no hesitation that I have had a blessed life to date, and if Dostoyevsky is right, it is surely due to the summers of my youth. I’ve carried into my adult life a treasure trove of memories from those times. Summer days back then meant long bike rides around town, whiffle ball and pickle games with friends from the neighborhood, and even fights with snowballs gathered from winter storms and stored in freezers during the intervening months. Summer nights meant kick-the-can games, flashlight tag, and talking under the moonlight with friends about our dreams for someday. Back then, we also had the freedoms each day to come and go as we pleased, to explore, and to grow. We were bound only by that inevitable call through the darkness to come home. I would trade those times for nothing. But those days and nights were long ago, and I worry now about the memories my own children will take with them into adulthood. Each generation, it is said, is supposed to stand on the shoulders of the one before it. They are to eclipse the triumphs of the prior generation, yet I fear my children’s memories will not be as abundant as mine. Each of our family’s days, it seems, is a race to the finish. By the time some combination of school, homework, practices, errands, and chores is completed, we are all too exhausted to do anything but sleep. Adding to the many worries that I as a father have is that when the kids do have free time and they want to play with me, I offer too many explanations that now is not the right time. The yard must be mowed. The dishes must be done. I’ve got work to do. My promises of “tomorrow” are starting to ring hollow even to me. In my frequent taking stock I cannot help but worry about the memories my children will have. I worry that I am failing as a father to provide them with the most magical childhoods possible.

But then I find myself at Bald Head Island, off the coast of North Carolina, at the start of our family’s annual beach trip. This beach is not like the beaches of my youth in any respect. I remember water slides, jungle golf, and amusement parks, each of which produced so many great times and happy memories for me. Bald Head has none of these. Cars are not even allowed here. The island is, I believe, the perfect break from days that are races to the finish. I have been coming here since 1994, just after I graduated college, and I introduced my fiancée to this place in 1998. The years since have blessed us with a wonderful marriage and three remarkably beautiful children, each of whom first dipped their toes in the Atlantic here as infants. Now 10, eight, and five, our kids are here with their cousins, and the weather is not cooperating. During what looked like a break in the wind and rain we made a break for the beach. Within minutes of entering the surf, however, the rains came again. My first instinct is to run, to climb the steps over the dune, and to hurry over the boardwalk back to our cottage. The kids must sense the irony of trying not to get wet when freshly broken waves are rushing past their ankles, because they stay. They splash. They laugh. They dance. Me? I choose to watch and smile. I begin to think that my children will remember this moment forever, and this is when my worries end. I realize that Dostoyevsky was only half right. This moment, when my children dance in the surf with raindrops falling over them, may indeed be an instrument of their salvation one day. But as a father who has worried about the childhoods my kids are having, this moment is most surely an instrument of mine.

Josh Durham, father of three, has been visiting Bald Head Island with his family for the better part of 20 years. Josh resides in Charlotte and enjoys spending his time on the island slowing down and relaxing, preferably on the beach in the late afternoon. haven 129
