magical realism
Perhaps it’s the absence of a bridge or cars… or the presence of forest, beach and marsh preserves teeming with wildlife… the colorful history dating to the age of piracy… or the coastal vernacular architecture, typified by a trio of lightkeepers’ cottages. And yet, there’s something magical about Bald Head Island that eludes one’s ability to quite put a finger on it… invisible but no less real. Some places can only be understood with the heart.

THE LAY OF THE LAND HAVE BIKE, WILL TRAVEL If you’re not in a hurry, we recommend a bicycle as your primary vehicle for island sightseeing. Starting in Harbour Village, veer right onto West Bald Head Wynd and keep pedaling as the road turns into South Bald Head Wynd and parallels the ocean. Then loop back down Federal Road for a snapshot of beach, maritime forest and creek environments in one round trip. No need to lug a bike to the island—Coastal Urge and Riverside Adventure Co. can rent you one by the day or by the week.
TAKE A HIKE Along Federal Road several trailheads enter the Bald Head Woods Preserve, a nearly 200-acre area of undisturbed maritime forest. Just off Federal Road, the M. Kent Mitchell Nature Trail rewards hikers with spectacular views of the creek and close encounters with fiddler crabs and wading birds when the tide is low. 18
WITH NO BRIDGE LINKING BALD HEAD ISLAND TO THE MAINLAND, CARS TAKE A BACK SEAT TO OPEN-AIR MODES OF TRANSPORT. IF YOU WANT TO COVER LOTS OF GROUND, STOP BY CARY CART CO. TO LEASE AN ELECTRIC CART BY THE DAY OR BY THE WEEK. KEEP IN MIND, THE ISLAND’S POSTED SPEED LIMIT IS A MERE 18 MPH.
RUN LIKE THE WIND The island’s relatively flat, car-free paved wynds make Bald Head Island a runner’s paradise. At low tide the island’s beaches also provide ample running room with incomparable scenery. If you’re feeling competitive, or just want to come out for a good cause, sign up for a Turtle Trot with the Bald Head Island Conservancy or the annual Run for the Light race hosted by the Old Baldy Foundation during National Lighthouse Weekend in August.
MAKE THE CLIMB Whether it’s your first time or your fiftieth, a climb to the top of Old Baldy is always worth the effort. Commissioned by Thomas Jefferson, North Carolina’s oldest lighthouse still stands tall after more than 200 years, thanks to the efforts of the Old Baldy Foundation. In addition to a panoramic aerial view of the island and surrounding area, admission to climb the lighthouse includes access to the Smith Island Museum of History, where you’ll find artifacts illuminating the duties of a lighthouse keeper. If you have a couple of hours, take a guided historic tour for an in-depth exploration of the island’s past.
STROLL WITH SPIRITS In the summer months, follow Riverside Adventure Co.’s brave guides down moss-draped paths as they conjure 400 years of ghostly island lore. You’ll encounter the haunts of tortured spirits and lost souls, lighthouse keepers and lifesavers, pirates and river pilots, beautiful women and desperate soldiers in this evening tour suitable for all ages.

FUN IN THE SUN Each of Bald Head Island’s beaches presents its own charms, and we suggest you explore all three. South Beach’s long strand is ideal for strolling and shelling. Along West Beach near Harbour Village, you’ll find kids splashing in the shallow surf and waving as the ferry goes by. Out on East Beach, the surf tends to be bigger and wave riders make the most of a good thing.
MAKE SOME WAVES SURF’S UP If you want to learn how to surf, sign up for a class at East Beach Surf Shop in Harbour Village or at their Surf Tent at Access 42 on East Beach. East Beach Surf Shop’s experienced instructors offer 90-minute lessons for ages 6 through adult that will have your whole crew catching waves in no time. For more experienced beach bums, the shop also offers hourly, daily and weekly surfboard rentals.
ROOM TO BREATHE Elevate your yoga routine by taking it outside. The island’s seemingly endless beaches provide countless places to relax and re-center with a water view. If you prefer to have an instructor guiding you, Island Retreat Spa & Salon offers morning Vinyasa Flow yoga classes on the beach in the warmer months.
STAND FOR SOMETHING Take a standup paddleboard (SUP) excursion with Coastal Urge for a novel way to discover the island’s waters or simply rent a paddleboard if you want to head out on your own. Book online first, then stop by the Board Room on Keelson Row in Harbour Village to pick up your board. East Beach Surf Shop and Coastal Urge offer SUP rentals by the hour, day or week, too. First timers usually start out in the creeks, while more adventurous paddlers take to the ocean.
20
HOOK, LINE & SINKER Surf fishing aficionados flock to the Point of Cape Fear just as the sun comes up, and often their efforts are rewarded with a catch of bluefish, red drum or flounder. You can cast right from the beach if you have a N.C. Saltwater Fishing License (available online). All the gear you need can be purchased at the Dockmaster Convenience Store or at Island Hardware. When you’re ready to land the big one, local guides will take you offshore in search of mahi, tuna and tarpon. Inquire at the Dockmaster Convenience Store at the Bald Head Island Marina for a recommendation.
ALONG WITH SWIMMING, 14 MILES OF BEACHES OFFER A PERFECT BACKDROP FOR BUILDING SANDCASTLES, HORSING AROUND, OR JUST GETTING YOUR DAILY DOSE OF VITAMIN D.

THE CAPE IS CALLING
WET & WILD
The oceanfront Shoals Club, which overlooks the Point of Cape Fear, offers a spacious swimming pool, along with a separate kiddie pool for the smaller set. Pool-goers enjoy sunning on the ample decks and showering off in the convenient locker rooms. When you’re ready for a change of pace, round up the family for a little friendly competition on the nearby bocce ball courts or a game of table tennis. Direct access to the cape is another perk for members and temporary members of the Shoals Club. Just grab a towel, chair and umbrella provided by the attentive staff and hit the beach.
When you’re ready to cool off, the Bald Head Island Club’s aquatics complex takes warm weather fun to the next level. The facility includes a spacious lap pool, leisure pool and zero-entry pool. Children love the giggle-inducing splash pad, slide tower, waterslides and seaside playground, while adults find refreshment at a poolside cabana bar that specializes in frozen drinks. During the summer, the Club offers water aerobics and poolside yoga, too.

HIT THE COURTS
STAY FIT
Reserve a tennis court at the BHI Club and enjoy a match within view of the ocean. Clinics and private lessons for kids and adults are available with a tennis pro year-round. Pickleballers find a welcoming scene here, too, with private lessons and clinics for all ages. For a change of pace, give it a go on the immaculate croquet greenswards where the Bald Head Island Croquet Club plays, practices and holds international championships. From June to September, the Club hosts Family Croquet, relaxed gatherings where you can learn how the game is played.
Both the Shoals Club and BHI Club offer fitness facilities with cardio and strength training equipment, as well as free weights, so you can keep to your workout routine even while on vacation. The BHI Club’s fitness staff offers stretching classes, water aerobics and boot camp, along with one-on-one personal training. Yoga classes on the Shoals Club presentation deck are a favorite in the summer months.
TEE OFF Don’t leave the island without playing a round or two on the BHI Club’s acclaimed golf course. The 18-hole beauty winds its way along the Atlantic Ocean and through the maritime forest, providing stunning views at every turn. If your swing is a little rustly, head to the range where you can warm up, take a lesson from a PGA Golf Pro, or join a clinic and perfect your technique. The Pro Shop rents clubs and shoes if you need them. Junior golfers enjoy discounted rates, so make it a family affair. haven 23
THE CALL OF THE WILD THERE’S NO BETTER PLACE TO EXPLORE THE OUTDOORS THAN BALD HEAD ISLAND, WHERE 10,000 ACRES OF FOREST AND TIDAL CREEKS ARE SET ASIDE FOREVER AS PRESERVES. THINK OF IT AS YOUR OWN NATURAL PLAYGROUND.
24
UP A CREEK Through the Bald Head Island Conservancy, you can take guided kayak tours to explore the meandering creeks, where you’ll likely see egrets and herons, and even the occasional dolphin. East Beach Surf Shop offers guided trips along Bald Head Creek and Fishing Creek in single and double kayaks. These 90-minute tours are packed with history, stories and wildlife spotting. The shop also offers four-hour fishing tours of the island’s creeks by kayak. If you’d rather set out on your own, the staff will rent you a kayak or canoe and send you on your way. Coastal Urge rents kayaks, too. You’ll want to book online before making your way to their Board Room outpost along Keelson Row.
TURTLE TIME Join the Bald Head Island Conservancy staff on their summer night UTV patrols with the Sea Turtle Ride Along, watch for turtle tracks leading from the waves to the dunes, and call back to base with your findings. If you’re in the right place at the right time, you could see a loggerhead turtle lay her eggs or witness a nest hatch. During sea turtle nesting season, the Conservancy also holds nightly Turtle Walks for members, which start at the Barrier Island Study Center and then move to the beach for a brief lesson in sea turtle nesting ecology. If the timing is right, your group will watch a turtle dig her nest and lay her eggs while the Conservancy sea turtle protection team collects data. Later in the season, you may get to see a nest hatch.
FINE FEATHERS
IT’S ONLY NATURAL
Every season of the year, Bald Head Island is home to an impressive array of resident and migratory birds—around 250 species in total. Link up with a Bald Head Island Conservancy Birding Tour to see how many you can find or join Conservancy staff on a Middle Island Exploration Tour for an opportunity to visit the Ibis Pond, a private sanctuary where our feathered friends congregate. If you’re birdwatching on your own, keep an eye out for ospreys soaring around the golf course, egrets wading along the marsh edge, painted buntings flitting in the brush beside Federal Road, and bald eagles perched high atop the tree canopy.
The Bald Head Island Conservancy brings the island’s wildlife up close and personal with kid-friendly Crabbing & Fishing Trips and Hands-On Dissection classes. The whole family’s welcome for Tidal Explorations and Reptile RoundUps, which offer a chance to meet the Conservancy’s favorite animals. Another popular program is the Bald Head After Dark Tour, which introduces the nocturnal creatures of the island, including frogs, bats, alligators and deer. After a brief presentation, you’ll join an environmental educator on a flashlight-led walk to see what critters you can spot.

FAMILIES Story by Odette Arnold // Photos by Harry Taylor
There are as many reasons to love Bald Head Island as there are grains of sand on the beach, so it follows that no two families’ stories would be alike.
These two, however, are remarkably similar.

New homeowners Kristin and Rob Harper have three children: two older sons and a younger daughter. So do Melissa and Brent Blackmon. The Harpers are from Wake Forest, a northern suburb of Raleigh, N.C., while the Blackmons used to live on the opposite end of Wake County, in Clayton. Both families fell in love with the island on their first visit many years ago, but didn’t buy a home here until 2020— within four months of each other. Rob and Brent work in the tech industry; Kristin and Melissa in the nonprofit world. And both families are completely dedicated to the work of the Bald Head Island Conservancy. Melissa is the Conservancy’s director of development, while the Harpers are lifetime members. In fact, Melissa gave the Harpers their first tour of the Conservancy campus.

THE HARPERS ABOUT 10 YEARS AGO, ROB SAW AN ARTICLE ABOUT BALD HEAD ISLAND IN COASTAL LIVING MAGAZINE AND WANTED TO CHECK IT OUT. THEY BOOKED A LONG WEEKEND AND KRISTIN SUMMED UP THEIR FIRST IMPRESSION SUCCINCTLY: “IT WAS THE BEST WEEKEND EVER.” “There was just something magical,” she continued. “This gorgeous place, perfect weather. At one point we saw a row of golf carts parked along the beach road and thought that maybe it was a wedding, so we went to take a peek. Turned out we got to witness a turtle hatching! It was so beautiful and amazing, and is still our favorite experience on the island.”
32
“Rob was ready to buy a house from minute one,” said Kristin, “but I felt it might be more than I wanted to take on.” She explained that pre-pandemic, Rob traveled about 80 percent of the time for work and she had her hands full with three kids, the house in Wake Forest, and a mountain home in northern Georgia. “I thought renting for a week or two every year was just fine,” she said.
"secret blessing" In addition to hanging out at both the Bald Head Island Club and the Shoals Club, the Harpers stay busy on the island: Rob with golf, Kristin with beach yoga and enjoying her downtime, and the kids with every other activity under the sun.
However, as a treat for Father’s Day in 2020, the family went to the island for the weekend and looked at 13 houses in eight hours. Kristin did not want to take on a remodel or even have to furnish an island home, so that eliminated many of the options. None of the houses they saw on that visit was exactly what they wanted, but they were encouraged enough to continue looking. Not long after, their realtor called them with news of a house on Snowy Egret Trail set to go on the market the next day that appeared to have everything they wanted.
“There’s just so much for kids of all ages to do here,” said Kristin. “They have taken classes at the Conservancy, play golf and tennis, ride bikes to get snow cones at Mike’s Bites, play spikeball on the beach. They can just get in the golf cart and go. They love that, and so do we.” Looking back, Kristin called having the Bald Head Island house during the early months of the pandemic “a secret blessing.” In the fall of 2020, school was virtual, so they spent a lot of time on the island. “Both boys, Riley (18) and Robbie (16), played high school football and Finley is into acting, so we usually had a very busy schedule,” said Kristin. “We could never have had so much time together on the island otherwise.”
“From the pictures, it looked perfect, so we made an offer without seeing it in person,” Kristin said. She then made a quick trip to the island and after confirming that she loved it, sent Rob and their then 12-yearold daughter Finley to check it out. “They started sending me pictures of themselves going down the waterslide at the Bald Head Island Club pool,” she laughed. “I reminded them that they were there to check out the house and Rob said, ‘Oh, we looked at it for about 20 minutes and you’re right. It’s perfect, we love it, and now we’re playing at the club.’”

THE BLACKMONS NOT SURPRISINGLY, THE WORD BLESSING ALSO CROPS UP WHEN TALKING WITH THE BLACKMONS. IN FACT, THEY NAMED THEIR SUMNER’S CRESCENT HOME “BALD HEAD BLESSINGS,” WHICH FOR THEM CARRIES A DOUBLE MEANING. Melissa explained that their now nine-year-old daughter Sofie had two liver transplants as an infant and while she is now extremely healthy, she has a compromised immune system. The family lives in nearby Wilmington most of the year, so it was fortunate that they could get to the island easily and often during the quarantine months of the pandemic. “With Sofie’s condition, we weren’t comfortable traveling far even before COVID, and I’m not crazy about taking her on planes,” said Melissa. “Bald Head was, and is, the perfect getaway.” The second meaning of the name is an overall feeling of being blessed to live and work here, she explained. “We appreciate everything the island has to offer and the work the Conservancy does to keep the island so beautiful and natural. Bald Head became our happy place.”
34
"Bald Head Blessings"
While they had been looking for island property before the pandemic, the Blackmons, like the Harpers, did tours over FaceTime and bought their house after only seeing pictures online. Both families rent their house for most of the summer and spend more time on the island in the offseason.
The Blackmons were first introduced to the island by neighbors in 2016, “and I don’t think we’ve taken another beach vacation since,” said Melissa. On a fishing outing the family won at a July 4th auction in 2018, they learned a lot about the Bald Head Island Conservancy from the staff that accompanied them. At the time, Melissa was working for a nonprofit in the Raleigh area and loved it, but she said the family always wanted to move to the coast. “As luck would have it, they had a job opening and it was a great opportunity for us.”
Melissa said Sofie and her brothers Max (16) and Jack (14) love the freedom of riding bikes on their own, fishing at the beach, going to the pools, and just exploring the island. When they were quarantined on the island for the better part of four months, the schedule for the boys went like this: school, cast net, fish.
is different at night and we want to take it all in because it changes every day.” On a final note regarding the striking similarities between these two families, Melissa chimed in with the Blackmon family’s favorite Bald Head Island memory: “It was the first time we witnessed a sea turtle excavation,” she marveled. “We were in awe of seeing the baby turtles up close. It was so exciting for everyone.”
While all three children understand and appreciate the natural splendor of the island, Sofie is the budding environmentalist, said Melissa. “She goes to all of the Conservancy’s classes, takes the camps, and loves hunting for ghost crabs,” she laughed. “She actually loves it all.” Melissa said the family also loves to explore the island at night. “We just jump in the cart and go,” she said. “The island

Aptly and cleverly named Top of the Hill both for its lofty location atop Bald Head Island’s magnificent dune ridge and as a nod to the owners’ love of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, this home is perfectly poised to deliver jaw-dropping vistas. It does not disappoint. “You’re in your own world up here,” points out architect Peter Quinn. “There is a beautiful view from every single window. If you enter a room and choose a different place to sit down, you will have a different experience.”

Inside Out Offering sweeping vistas of South Beach and the Atlantic Ocean, the kitchen, dining room and living room all have open-air counterparts just beyond the walls. There is a seamless flow of indoor and outdoor living on the main level that, remarkably, incorporates an enticing pool with a cascading waterfall. “It’s quite unusual to have a pool in front of a house, but this site at this elevation makes that possible,” says Quinn. “The pool is invisible from the street, so in the most public of locations there is complete privacy.” Quinn explains that the house was designed precisely to settle into the site’s natural contours, creating an appearance of the house emerging from the landscape. As a result, it appears to be two stories from the front, but it’s actually three, with the ground level around back housing the more utilitarian spaces, including a three-bay cart garage, back stairs and plenty of storage. At the opposite end of the first floor, a comfortably furnished screened porch with a fireplace faces west, perfect for showcasing the setting sun over cocktails.

Graceful Arches & Moody Blues Taking in the architectural details and interior design of the home, several themes emerge. These repeated details provide unity from room to room, and a cohesive style that interior designer Jane Wood says expresses the owners perfectly.
A recurring shape, arches are found in the foyer, an upstairs bedroom, the master’s indoor/outdoor shower, the butler's pantry and the arc of the pool. Even the serpentine driveway with its switchbacks creates the graceful curve. The sea and the sky that dominate the gorgeous views heavily influenced the interior design. Here, feeling blue evokes emotions of comfort and contentment. 44
Mixed Media & Time Worn Textures The owners travel a great deal, so much of the artwork and décor have been handpicked from all over the world. The eclectic collection contains nearly every conceivable medium, including paper, textiles, paint, photography and wood. Reflecting the owners’ love of antiques and pieces that tell a story, rustic elements are found throughout the home, including the great room’s rough-hewn wooden beams; the leathered marble in the kitchen and bathrooms; and the fireplace’s mantle, painted brick and leathered granite surround.

The Family Plan
The owners of Top of the Hill have two grown children, but the extended family is large—and always welcome. Fortunately, the house can easily accommodate a crowd without feeling the least bit crowded. There are four bedrooms upstairs, including a bunkroom with built-ins that can sleep eight, and a game room that has overflow bedding tucked into a cozy corner.
46
The master suite is on the first floor, adding to the intimacy of the large home when the couple is there alone. It’s just off the kitchen, away from the street, and the views from the luxurious master bath look out over the top of the maritime forest to East Beach beyond. The master bath also has two of the home’s most unique and beloved features: an indoor/ outdoor second shower that is tucked inside an alcove/balcony and custom-designed mirrors over the vanity that simultaneously allow for breathtaking views and abundant natural light.

A New Take on New England
48
Quinn calls the architectural style a traditional beach house, reinterpreted in Bald Head Island style. “The gambrel roof, for example, brings the roof down to ground level and gives it an old school, coastal Rhode Island feel,” he says. “Throughout the house, however, we introduced elements to create a modern feel while still respecting the traditional aesthetic,” he continues. “We used many design elements in a contradictory way. For example, there are railings that are edges but tend to disappear, panoramic views that are broken down to a personal scale, and large, open interior spaces that frame views to smaller, intimate areas.”
Yet beyond the northeastern influences, it’s clear where this family’s heart lies. Wood says the owners took great care to source much of the art and furniture from North Carolina. “They wanted the house to have an authentic local and regional feel,” she emphasizes. “That was very important to them.” A house appropriately called Top of the Hill that pays homage to the love of family and place: When you’re Carolina born and bred, clearly nothing could be finer.

DIVERSIONS
GreenS With Envy Golfers can be forgiven for being jealous of Abby Byrd. “My family bought a house on Bald Head Island in 1992 when I was about four or five years old,” said Abby, “and I’m still here.” A self-described shy child who admits to being a little awkward, Abby said she was not fond of the beach so she made the golf course her playground instead. She started doing summer camps and golf clinics around age eight, and quickly became hooked.
“I would go to the golf course in the morning, spend hours on the range, go home for lunch, and then come back out and play,” she said. Abby came up the ranks in junior golf and eventually played for East Carolina University from 2006 until 2010, where she was conference player of the year twice and player of the week 25 times. After playing professionally on the Symetra Tour for two years, Abby made her way back to her golf roots and is now the Director of Golf Instruction for The Bald Head Island Club.
“It’s rare that people love,” she mused. little island with me. It’s home.”

Besides the enviable work environment, Abby says the best thing about her job is creating golfers. “Golf is a cool thing now,” she said. “It has had a big bump in popularity in recent years. It makes sense because it’s naturally socially distant and good for families to play together.” On a ride around the 18 holes in June of 2021, Abby talked about the course as it was during her childhood and after the major renovation in 2010. “I love the changes that were made,” she said. “It’s easier on the environment and sets off the course really well.” Along the ride, Abby imparted some noteworthy insights, as well as tips and tricks for getting the most out of a round, year-round. Hole #9
Water, Water Everywhere
Usually Windy, but Rarely a Breeze
THE BALD HEAD ISLAND CLUB GOLF COURSE 56
Timing is everything because the wind is almost always in play here, and it’s typically not subtle. In the summer, the prevailing wind is southwest, so the first three holes are downwind and play shorter. In the winter, a north wind is going to be in your face and you should play more club than typical because it’s stronger than you think. Take note of the crosswind on the interior holes. You don’t feel it as much, but it’s there.
Fifteen of the course’s 18 holes have water, and that’s not the kind of splash you want to make. The water makes for particularly lovely views on 1, 9 and 16, but unfortunately ugly scores if you don’t play it smart. The best advice for water is to pretend it’s not there. Ignore the elephant in the room and focus your shot elsewhere.
Throwing You a Curve Doglegs factor in a few of the holes and one of the biggest is to the left on hole 4. Rather than try to cut the corner, hit to the right and lay up because the risk/reward balance is not favorable. Better safe than sorry.
haven 57
58
Iconic Signature Holes The signature hole on the front nine is as iconic as it gets. When you step up to the tee box on 7, turn around for a great view of the venerable Old Baldy Lighthouse. The signature hole of the entire course is 16. The tees are tiered and the back one sits atop one of the highest points on the island, providing scenic ocean views between the cottages. There’s a forced carry over water from all of the tees, and the result is a near island green.
An Abundance of Bunkers Whether you hit the beach on Bald Head Island or not, you’re going to have to contend with sand. Bunkers figure into the mix on most holes, but they are typically along the edges of the hole. You do encounter a large sand trap straightaway on hole 5, so hit it up the right side and carry on. The sixth green is fronted by a large bunker, so take care not to hit your approach long.
Into the Woods The Bald Head Island Club course is carved out of dense maritime forest, and you can find yourself literally and metaphorically in the woods at any time on any hole. Put extra balls in your bag. On this course, the woods and the water gobble up a lot of balls.
Alligators and Ospreys and Deer, Oh My! When first designed and built, and again during the renovation, great care was taken to keep as much of the course as natural as possible. In addition to hosting humans, this hallowed terrain is also home to a host of flora and fauna. Even while hitting on the driving range, it’s not unusual to see alligators strolling from one lagoon to another.
Play It Smart, Lay It Up On all the par fives, you have a good chance to reach the green in two. Eleven is visually intimidating on the approach to the green with water to the left and in front, but laying up is usually a good call here. Lay up on 7, as well, because the green is difficult and you’ll set yourself up with a shorter approach to the green.
Rough and Tough Holes 12, 13 and 14 make up one of the toughest stretches on the course. Twelve is one of the few that curve to the right off the tee. It’s a nice hole if you can hit a fade, but if you overdo it, you’re in trouble in the woods. The tiered green is one of the hardest and can make or break your score. Thirteen might live up to its reputation for being an unlucky number, since it’s one of the hardest holes in the area. It has some of the deepest bunkers on the course, and it tends to hit and run off the green. Fourteen was the beta test hole for the renovations. Go for any of the three palm trees from any of the tee boxes and you’re in business.

savor
the connection
As we finished our tour, Abby commented that, to her eye, designer George Cobb saved one of the best for last. The beauty of the 18th hole prompted her to impart a final tidbit of advice that may not improve your score, but will certain enhance your enjoyment of the game.
“Remember to look up,” she urged. “Don’t just focus on the ball. See what’s around you: the beautiful views, the wildlife, the unique and blessed environment. Savor the connection to the place itself.” Because on this course, no matter where your ball sits, it hardly seems possible to improve your lie.

SHAPED BALD HEAD ISLAND By Hunter Ingram Bald Head Island is a living, breathing artifact forged by more than 400 years of history. Over the years, the lighthouses that watched over the island’s shores gave it purpose, and, in time, an eternal icon in Old Baldy. Bald Head Island served the region during times of war as the guardian of the gates at the mouth of the Cape Fear River. Storms sculpted its shorelines, forming the character of its terrain little by little. Even the region’s name, Cape Fear, framed the island’s cultural perception, inspiring caution in the mariners who sailed its waters and curiosity in those who visited it. No single individual or event created Bald Head, but rather the island reflects the people and forces that have touched its shores, all the way back to the days when Native Americans made seasonal trips to its forests, beaches and waterways to hunt and fish. Today, Bald Head’s intriguing sense of place makes it one of the most sought-after coastal destinations on the East Coast, but what are some of the historical moments that got it here—the major events that shaped the island its admirers, visitors and residents know and love today?

HERE’S HOW 11
E V E N T S U N D E N I A B LY INFLUENCED BALD
H E A D I S L A N D ’ S S T O RY: 1585: Birth of the “Cape of Feare” What’s in a name? It’s possible Sir Richard Grenville asked that question when he logged the events of June 23, 1585, on his journey up the East Coast. The English explorer was at the helm of the Tiger, the lead vessel for the second of three missions commissioned by Queen Elizabeth I to start a British colony on the eastern shore of the New World. The third mission would establish the Lost Colony of Roanoke. But before that tragedy, Grenville almost faced his own when, according to his account, his ships passed by what is today Bald Head and nearly wrecked on a “breache called the Cape of Feare.” Some argue whether Grenville himself bestowed this name on the treacherous area, or if he was referring to a name given on a previous voyage. Whatever the case, one thing is clear—the name stuck and for more than four centuries “Cape Fear” has been inscribed on this region.
1761: Mother Nature Carves a New Entrance Hurricanes are an inescapable reality of living on the coast of North Carolina, ravaging the shoreline long before meteorologists began giving them names in the 1950s. One storm in particular, which ripped across Cape Fear in September 1761, is notable because it was powerful enough to open a new inlet into the Cape Fear River, a few miles north of Bald Head. Appropriately dubbed New Inlet, the new breach served as a more northern escape for the water coming downriver that had for centuries met the ocean at the mouth of the river. This change would ultimately alter the current of the river south of it, causing immense erosion on Bald Head’s riverside and eventually playing a pivotal role in the downfall of the Confederacy during the Civil War.

1794: Bald Head Gets Its First Light South Carolina Landgrave Thomas Smith II first acquired the land now known as Bald Head Island in 1713, but it would be several generations before a Smith started making history on it. His descendent Benjamin Smith, a state senator in the years after the Revolutionary War and eventual North Carolina governor, offered up 10 acres of his family’s holdings to build the state’s first lighthouse on an advantageous perch that overlooked and marked the mouth of North Carolina’s most economically essential river. The federal government would ultimately sign off on the 84-foot brick tower in 1792, three years after the state joined the union. The first Bald Head light gave the island the function for which it would become famous. But it only served until 1813, when it was darkened and taken down brick by brick. It was built too close to the river, and erosion—much of it caused by New Inlet— threatened to eat the earth right out from under it.
Benjamin Smith State senator in the years after the Revolutionary War and eventual North Carolina governor
1817: Old Baldy Begins to Shine Bald Head would source its second lighthouse, at least partially, from the supply of salvaged bricks and ambition from its predecessor. Situated on the interior side of the salt marsh to be safe from any further intrusive erosion, this new lighthouse built in 1817 would rise even taller above the island—110 feet—and shine even brighter. But the Cape Fear’s newest light had its limitations. Its location was too far inland to serve Frying Pan Shoals and warn mariners of the 32-mile-long sandbar’s shallowest spots, leaving the lighthouse to be dubbed “useless” and “inadequate” by the government that built it. It was decommissioned in 1935, but Old Baldy gets the last laugh as it remains the oldest standing lighthouse in the state. Thanks to its rare off-centered lanthorn and mottled stucco exterior—features that would have garnered it grief during its functional years—it is now one of the most visited lighthouses in North Carolina.
haven 69
1861: War Comes to a Fractured Nation At the outbreak of the Civil War, Confederate forces called the Cape Fear region up to serve. On Bald Head, Southern forces quickly extinguished Old Baldy to conceal their plans to build a fort on the island. Fort Holmes, constructed in 1863 by enslaved people, was a 20-foot-high, nearly two-mile-long earthen fort intended to be the first line of defense for the river and guardian of the Confederacy’s major seaport at Wilmington, through which it funneled vital war resources. However, the fort never truly got a chance to fight. The Union’s campaign to capture Wilmington in late 1864 never extended as far south as Bald Head, but rather used New Inlet as its access point. Forts Fisher and Anderson would bear the scars of the fighting in the area, while Bald Head was left with the quiet mounds that still snake along its western side today.

Cape Fear Light and lightkeepers' cottages
1882: Surfmen to the Rescue Lighthouses were intended to steer ships clear of natural obstacles like Frying Pan Shoals, but mariners still ran afoul of its trouble spots. The Cape Fear Life-Saving Station was established on Bald Head Island’s East Beach in 1882 to save those in distress. The surfmen and keeper stationed there attempted rescues in dangerous sea conditions sometimes miles offshore, with only surfboats, oars and determination to guide them. Their legacy is irrefutable, as the station was responsible for 642 lives saved—with not a single life lost—between 1882 and 1914, when the station was relocated to South Beach. The U.S. Life-Saving Service served as the backbone for the creation of the U.S. Coast Guard in 1915 and its structures on Bald Head would be used again during World War II. More than a century later, the surfmen’s heroism still stands as one of Bald Head Island’s finest accomplishments and is celebrated in the name of the island’s Cape Fear Station neighborhood.
1903: Frying Pan Shoals Finally Gets Its Light Old Baldy may be Bald Head’s longest-serving lighthouse, but it was not its most powerful. That honor goes to the Cape Fear Light Station, a skeletal lighthouse built in 1903. It stood at a whopping 150 feet tall overlooking South Beach, from which it could easily send its 18-mile warning beam out over Frying Pan Shoals. The tower’s 55-year history pulled the island into the 20th century with its bright light and its most colorful keeper, Captain Charlie. Charles Norton Swan served 30 years watching over the tower, leading another generation of keepers and their families to live under the lights at the compound known today as “Captain Charlie’s Station.” Ultimately, the Cape Fear Light Station’s downfall lay in its composition. Its metal frame was plagued by corrosive rust caused by salt spray, leading to its demolition in 1958 after the emergence of the Oak Island Lighthouse across the river.
Thomas

Boyd
1914: The Fleeting Life of Palmetto Island Several attempts were made to develop Bald Head Island, including a federally sanctioned proposal to turn it into a national park. But the first and most buzzed-about early attempt to gain momentum was Thomas Franklin Boyd’s plan to create a winter resort on the island, a retreat for northerners when the cold arrived. Boyd bought the island in 1914 and worked for more than a decade to awaken public awareness of Bald Head, which was largely unknown to those not serving a lighthouse or in a war. In addition to building a pavilion, hotel and pier for chartered guests, he renamed his new land Palmetto Island to play upon its natural tropical vegetation. But his momentum started to wane by the 1920s and the Great Depression put an end to his efforts, opening the door to latter-day development.

Generator Socie
1972: The Generator Society Takes Root During 1970s, as efforts to develop Bald Head Island slowly reignited, a group of pioneering families built generator-powered homes on the island, long before Carolina Power & Light brought electricity in 1981. Between 1972 and 1980, the 19 families who formed the “Generator Society” set the tone and tenor for the residential life that would follow on Bald Head. Traveling by four-wheel drive vehicles and communicating on CB radios, they built a community that carved out a unique corner of the world for itself, while still respecting the island and its natural gifts. If Bald Head’s residential community were a big live oak tree, the Generator Society would be among its strongest roots.
72
1983-1985: The Mitchell Family Sets the Foundations for the Future As George Mitchell’s ownership and development of the island began, led by his sons Kent and Mark, so too did a commitment to protecting the Bald Head Island that came before. Two nonprofit organizations started with donated land and seed money from the Mitchells still oversee the island’s natural and historic treasures. The Bald Head Island Conservancy works with guests, residents and volunteers to protect the island’s natural and wildlife resources, including the annual turtle nesting on its beaches. Meanwhile, the Old Baldy Foundation takes the lead on education and preservation of the island’s history, centered around the now 205-year-old Old Baldy Lighthouse. The foundation will continue its restoration and hurricane repair efforts at the iconic lighthouse with a recent $750,000 grant from the North Carolina State Historic Preservation Office.
Mark, Cynthia, George and Kent Mitchell
2018: Hurricane Florence Interrupts Island Life Bald Head Island has endured all that Mother Nature has thrown at her over the centuries, but sometimes she still likes to show off her might. During 2018’s Hurricane Florence, the island received 30-plus inches of rain over the course of a few days, flooding roads and homes. Bald Head was essentially impassable for several weeks until the water receded, making it clear even a developed island and village are still at the mercy of something bigger. While several years later a handful of homes and structures are still awaiting repairs from storm damage, most have been renovated to be better than before, a testament to the island’s resilience. Florence stands as a reminder that four centuries into its recorded history, Bald Head Island has more than ever to preserve and protect—its colorful past, remarkable present and promising future.

WITH TRAILS SCATTERED THROUGHOUT BALD HEAD ISLAND, IT’S EASY TO GET UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL WITH FLORA AND FAUNA OF ALL VARIETIES. DEPENDING ON THE SEASON, TIME OF DAY AND RECENT WEATHER, YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT YOU MIGHT SEE WHEN YOU VENTURE OFF ROAD—IT JUST TAKES A WILLINGNESS TO SLOW DOWN AND LOOK CLOSELY. PRO TIP: A LITTLE BUG SPRAY MAKES ANY TREK A LOT MORE COMFORTABLE.

BALD HEAD WOODS TRA I L
A WA L K WHY IT’S COOL Live oak and laurel oak predominantly comprise the tree canopy, sheltering the thick undergrowth of wild olive, American holly, yaupon, sabal palm and catbrier from salt spray. At dawn or dusk, you’re likely to see white-tailed deer moving quietly through the brush. A short hike leads to the towering centuries-old Timmons Oak, still standing strong despite its hollowed-out trunk.
Deep in the woods, a snail resides within its own miniature forest of fungi.

WHY IT’S COOL Once a Confederate fortification designed to defend the lower Cape Fear, Fort Holmes is now a peaceful refuge for countless songbirds like the colorful painted bunting. Trellises and benches overlooking the fort’s earthen walls provide a perfect picnic spot, and you can read about the fort’s role in the Civil War at points throughout the trail.

WHY IT’S COOL The walk across a wooden boardwalk from Federal Road to a marsh hammock (the forested kind—not the swing kind) rewards you with sweeping scenes of Bald Head Creek and wading birds scouring the flats for their next meal. The trail also affords a view of where the Old Boat House, now reduced to timber, once stood. Plant and tree species are labeled along the way, so you can brush up on your botany.
Scores of migratory birds use the island as a stopover, including this handsome tricolored heron.

e r u t a y n o n w h i t m r a h in Bald Head Association (BHA)
I
n the mid-1970s, the five original homeowners, along with property owners in the process of building, met and agreed that a property owners’ association was needed to create and uphold restrictions for the
preservation, maintenance and thoughtful development of Bald Head Island. They called themselves “The Generator Society” because they relied on generators and each other before Bald Head Island had any power.
Their original vision was to “Live in harmony with nature.” This tenet included protection of BHI from overdevelopment, carefully balancing the delicate ecosystems of a barrier island with people, ensuring the stability and safety of wildlife and their habitats and build-out guidelines that do no harm to the island. Born from their foresight, Bald Head Association has continued to lead this charge since 1982. BHA works hard to preserve and minimally impact what so many people love about BHI — the natural beauty of its beaches, creeks, marsh and maritime forest — allowing the kid in all of us to come out to play, not only for today but for generations to come. On BHI, you choose your social connection experience — from solitude to community gatherings. You choose your recreational experience — from walking, jogging and biking to kayaking, surfing, fishing and more. From the ocean to the creeks and all in between, the Bald Head Island experience is what you make it. BHA helps create shared community experiences — from potluck dinners and book clubs to yoga, Pilates and knitting.
Warning: conversation and story swapping can lead to
instant and lasting friendships.
If you own property on Bald Head Island, BHA can help you navigate the design guidelines of owning, remodeling or constructing a residence and maintaining your landscaping — to preserve the island for all — on a barrier island, in keeping with the original vision while preserving Bald Head Island’s ageless appeal.
Through BHA, its members help control the destiny of Bald Head Island. We work for our property owners. With ongoing feedback, we can serve you better!
Keep up-to-date!

rom 1982 to today, Bald Head Association has endeavored to work on behalf of its members and Bald Head Island. Property owners and ideas may come and go, but BHA is rooted in its fundamental responsibility — long-term sustainability of the Island. In four decades of stewardship, BHA has watched over the residential architecture of Bald Head Island and helped maintain the original vision of BHI as the number of homes increases. BHA continues to work with the Island’s organizations for the benefit of not only property owners but also the incredible flora and fauna on this unique barrier island. As the caretaker of the Island’s culture, BHA continues to educate and communicate with new and seasoned owners alike, bridging the generations and celebrating the past in the present.
Watch for BHA’s 40th year celebratory events in 2022!

First things first, Bald Head Island has more coffee shops per capita than just about anywhere, and we suggest you get to know each of them during your visit. The one that started it all, Sandpiper Ice Cream & Coffee, still turns out a solid cup of joe, along with pastries and muffins to begin your day on a good foot. Conveniently, it’s less than a football field’s distance from the ferry landing. Make plans to return later in the day for their other-worldly handspun milkshakes. Sweet Bay Café & Catering, adjacent to the Maritime Market, serves up its own premium coffee. Early risers will appreciate 96
the café’s biscuits, pancakes, sausage, bacon, eggs and stoneground grits. Grab a newspaper from the Market (delivered daily like clockwork) and settle in. Keep the café in mind for lunch, too, where you’ll find a salad bar, daily hot specials, and an array of wraps, burgers and sandwiches. Just around the corner along Edward Teach Wynd, the newly opened Midway Coffee is quickly becoming a local favorite. In addition to drip, Americano and cold brew coffee, the baristas make a great cappuccino, latte and frappe. Hot teas, hot chocolate, smoothies
DINING GUIDE and shakes are on the menu, too. The highlight of any visit to Midway is the food, though. Their acai bowls, made from organic ingredients, are almost too pretty to eat. For heartier, but still healthy fare, try their sourdough toast with ricotta, fresh berries and drizzled honey, or their protein toast with cream cheese, cucumber, smoked salmon, boiled egg and dill. If you have a Bald Head Island Club membership, make it a point to visit the Bean Bar, located inside Horizons. Along with gourmet coffee, you’ll want to sample the delicious baked goods made fresh daily by the Club’s talented pastry chef. We recommend you take your breakfast or midafternoon pick-me-up out on the deck for a front-row view of the ships traveling to and from the port of Wilmington upriver. Lunch and dinner spots dotted across the island range from no-shirt-or-shoes-required outdoor venues to next-level fine dining. Starting from the most casual and working our way up, Mike’s Bites, located in a historic brick building near the foundation of the Cape Fear Light, serves beachgoers fresh sandwiches, hot dogs, Italian ice and popsicles. Around the corner at the Shoals Club, members and guest members maximize their pool time when they break for lunch at the popular Sandbar Grille. The menu presents a nice balance of adult-pleasing salads, gourmet sandwiches and entrees, along with kid-friendly chicken tenders, grilled cheese sandwiches and the like. At the other end of the island, rimming the marina, you’ll want to check out LuLu’s Taco Shack, located next door to Jules’ Salty Grub & Island Pub and open Memorial Day through Labor Day. Dine outside in the beer garden or order online for takeout. Speaking of Jules’, you can’t miss for lunch or dinner here year-round. Daytime dishes include a variety of salads and handhelds, led by the spicy Nashville hot chicken sandwich. Evening offerings include a traditional seafood steampot brimming with goodness; shrimp & grits; and a decadent Calabash-style seafood platter with your choice of fish, shrimp and/or oysters (we recommend all three!), served with fries, cole slaw and hushpuppies. Nonseafood lovers can get a great steak or burger, too. Stay late to enjoy a drink while watching live music or if the crowd is feeling it, karaoke. The full bar offers wines by the bottle or glass, a wide array of craft beers, and a slew of cocktails— like Jules’ signature “Pour Decision,” made with Jack Daniels, sherry, Chambord, agave and lemon—that pack a punch. Just around the corner, Delphina Cantina serves up creative Latin-inspired dishes day and night prepared by Executive Chef Carlos Rojas and his talented kitchen staff. Delphina’s menu includes tacos, nachos, enchiladas, burritos, bowls and quesadillas, along with specialty burgers. You can also savor delicious pizza in-house or togo from Marina Pizza, operating out of Delphina’s kitchen.

Pro tip: Don’t leave without sampling a jalapeño margarita or house-made sangria from the well-stocked bar. When summer comes, enjoy a libation while watching the boats come and go at Will o’ the Wisp, an outdoor venue just up the road from Jules’ beside East Beach Surf Shop (formerly The Sail Shop). Call Marina Pizza to have your dinner delivered or simply order popcorn and house nuts to accompany that IPA or rosé. For another take on pizza, a quick cart ride down Federal Road and a couple of turns brings you to the doorstep of Copper’s Wood-Fired Kitchen, connected to the Maritime Market. Order your choice of traditional pizza toppings or get fancy with gourmet toppings like lobster, crabmeat, filet mignon or French brie atop housemade sourdough crust. After a couple of minutes in a 900-degree oven, your authentic Neapolitan-style pie will be hot and ready. For dessert, or for a drink to accompany your ‘za, pop outside to Nye’s Cream Sandwiches & Scoops, which offers a curated menu of craft spirits, cocktails, beer and wine, along with ice cream scoops, ice cream sandwiches and milk shakes from its walk-up window. Nearby, the island’s new pan-Asian take-out venue, The Side Wok, features traditional Chinese wok-fired dishes, along with fusion creations inspired from Thailand, Vietnam, Japan and Korea. Grab your meal to go or enjoy it under the shady Forest Pavilion. Behind the Market along Edward Teach Wynd in the former police station, you’ll find the aptly named Jailhouse Provisions. Open for lunch and dinner, this newcomer to the dining scene has already established a reputation as one
98
of the most happening watering holes on the island, with its cool and quirky vibe. It just so happens to serve awesome food, too, including shrimp fritters, homemade mac ‘n cheese, fish & chips, crab cakes and lobster rolls. You’ll also find glutenfree options and an emphasis on organic, locally sourced ingredients. Next up is Latitudes, the Shoals Club’s indoor/outdoor bar and lounge. A full or guest membership opens the door to the island’s best spot for watching the sun go down over the cape. Inspired small plates like ahi tuna with seaweed salad, sticky rice noodles, edamame, cucumber, plantain and avocado will make you want to return. Oftentimes an acoustic guitarist lends additional atmosphere to the scene. Bonus: The cocktails served here, like the popular “Shoals Alley,” a gin-driven house specialty, are fine-tuned to perfection. Membership in hand, make it a point to reserve a table at AQUA, the Shoals Club’s seafood-centric dining venue. The restaurant relies heavily on regionally sourced fish, shellfish, meats, vegetables, fruits and cheeses, so the menu changes frequently with what’s in season. If you don’t enjoy seafood, a beautifully prepared steak typically appears, along with lamb or duck, and inventive dishes for vegetarians. A carefully designed wine and beer list complements the entrees. You’ll want to spring for a Bald Head Island Club membership to ensure access to its numerous food and beverage settings. For day drinkers, the poolside Cabana Bar specializes in frozen drinks that can only be described as transporting. Overlooking the pool scene, the family-favorite Horizons restaurant combines incredible ocean views with a menu diverse enough to please any palate. Choose from hearty plates like the Club Cioppino, a decadent combination of local fish, shrimp and mussels atop cheddar grits; or the grilled Fisherman’s Plate, a half Maine lobster, shrimp and scallops accompanied by
hominy fritters and chili remoulade. Fried seafood baskets, specialty pizzas, gourmet burgers and sandwiches are also served for lunch and dinner. The Palms at the BHI Club provides a gastro pub-style atmosphere with views of the croquet greensward. A perfectly seared ribeye steak or applewood baconwrapped filet sets the mood, along with a divine French dip made with braised beef and white cheddar on focaccia, served with truffle jus. Lighter options include the exquisite tuna roulade, a work of art consisting of ahi tuna, melon, cucumber and pickled daikon radish puree, dotted with sriracha pearls. At The Terrace, the BHI Club’s al fresco dining option for lunch or dinner, settle down at a table overlooking golf holes 10 and 18, belly up to the oversized bar, or get cozy in a lounge chair around the fire pit. The “Par for the Course” cocktail, a lively mix of Tito’s vodka, lemonade, cucumber, fresh mint and thyme syrup, always feels appropriate to the setting. We suggest ordering the Grilled Hot & Fire Shrimp served with napa cabbage slaw, boom boom sauce and sesame seeds. Beyond that, you can’t go wrong with any of the delightful salads, grilled or smoked meats, and seafood preparations. Executive Chef Caitlyn Kocsis, who orchestrates the menus at both Shoals Club and BHI Club, recently revamped the menu at The Grille to wide acclaim. Start your dinner with the roasted vegetable salad with microgreens, goat cheese and a pink peppercorn vinaigrette before you venture headlong into the lobster carbonara, composed of Maine lobster, linguine, prosciutto, green peas, heirloom tomatoes and pecorino. Continue the indulgence with a night cap. We recommend “The Revenge,” an incandescent drink named for gentleman pirate Stede Bonnet’s ship, made with Bulleit bourbon, hot honey and orange bitters, finished off in a smoke box. Cheers!

Blessings Cookbook By Odette Arnold
HON ORING A PLACE T HAT FEEDS THE SO UL
Kathy Virtue first came to Bald Head Island in 1993 with her then finance and his two young children. Chris was a widower who owned a house on Cape Fear Trail, and his nine-year-old daughter prepped her future mother for the experience on the ferry ride over. “We are going to the best place on Earth,” Leigh informed Kathy. “You are about to see magic. When I grow up, I’m going to get married on Bald Head Island.” Her words proved prophetic. For Kathy, Bald Head Island has been living up to that billing for 28 years and counting. For her part, Leigh was married in the Bald Head Island Chapel in 2014. The Virtues bought a new home on Currituck Way in 2010, and soon after Kathy, who owned a publishing company at the time, had an idea for a cookbook centered on the joy of island living. “Life on Bald Head is about getting together with friends and family, which often includes sharing good food and drinks,” she said. “I asked island friends to send in contributions and hundreds of recipes and photos poured in. I think it’s because the book really captures the essence of the island.” The cookbook’s name also came naturally. “It’s called Blessings because that’s how we feel,” said Kathy. “That is what our island is to so many.”
“We are going to the best place on Earth.”
104
Because the profits from the sale of the books go to the Bald Head Island Conservancy, it’s also a financial blessing to the nonprofit whose mission is to preserve and protect the island’s natural environment. While the Virtue family grew to include six children, it was the two oldest who helped her publish the book, now in its second printing. “That was so meaningful to me,” said Kathy. “All of our kids grew up on Bald Head Island and have special memories there. Bill and Leigh, however, were the ones who first introduced me to the island, so creating the book with them was very special.” It’s a family’s labor of love that became a recipe for success. Aptly titled, indeed. You can purchase your own copy of Blessings at Turtle Central, the Maritime Market, The Silver Peddler or Bald Head Blues on Bald Head Island.
ALWAYS BUY QUALITY AND DIVERSIFY Woodard & Company’s “golden rule” sums up their philosophy. Our fundamental premise for investment is trademarked and foundational to the way Woodard & Company has operated for nearly 40 years. A registered investment advisory firm located in Bermuda Run, just west of Winston Salem. Our approach is summed up by our fundamental premise — “Always buy quality and diversify” — which means applying an investment discipline incorporating quality investments that are diversified, based on the client’s objectives. At Woodard & Company Asset Management Company we act as fiduciaries, not brokers; the term fiduciary is defined by the statement “to hold the client’s interest first”. Stephanie Blake
No one wants to be treated like just another transaction. My focus is Bald Head Island and YOU. Imagine a personalized, confident and fun experience buying or selling your home. I’m here to be your island guide every step of the process. What you can always expect from me: Clarity, Counseling, Communication and the occasional Comedic Relief. I invite you to call me today for more information about Bald Head Island, ownership opportunities, or a market analysis of your island home!
See what previous buyers and sellers had to say about working with me: “Simply put, Stephanie Blake is one of the finest real estate professionals I have ever worked with. Professional, hardworking, and always available for calls or questions, she far exceeded my expectations. From the first meetings to determine pricing, staging, and marketing right through to the final closing, Stephanie impressed me with her knowledge of the market and her ability to prioritize and anticipate next steps. No stone was left unturned to ensure that we were ready to go to market and maximize the value of our home. And on top of all that, she was an absolute pleasure to work with – a positive attitude, can-do spirit, and always on top of things. I hope that we have an opportunity to work together again at some point in the future!” -The Brader-Araje Family
“We can’t say enough about how valuable Stephanie has been throughout the buying process! We were married on Bald Head 18 years ago and have been on family vacations many times over the years. We finally decided it was time to have a place of our own and were lucky to have met Stephanie early in our search. She is a great listener and was able to match great neighborhoods and properties based on our wants and needs. Stephanie is friendly, professional and is a wealth of knowledge about the island. She helped us through not only the buying process but all the way through to closing and gave us great tips that saved time and money. We would highly recommend Stephanie to anyone looking to buy or sell on Bald Head. She absolutely delivers a first class experience. Stephanie, we have wanted to make this jump for a long time and you made it a reality for our family and for generations to come. Thank you!” -Bill & Kristen

Celebrating More Than 10 Years as Owners & Operators
t’s hard to believe a decade has passed since islanders Claude and Melissa Pope became owners and operators of the Maritime Market. Promising to elevate the island’s food and beverage scene, they dove in headfirst back in 2011, expanding the store’s selection to include USDA Prime meats, fresh local seafood and produce, gourmet deli offerings, and a curated selection of fine wine and craft beer. In short order, customers came to rely on the extensive offerings and began packing lighter, knowing the Market had it covered. As the years passed, the café was expanded and renamed Sweet Bay Café & Catering, a go-to for breakfast, lunch, complete family meals and event catering. Recently, Copper’s Wood-Fired Kitchen, which shares space with the café, has taken the island by storm with its Neapolitan-style pizza. Outside, overlooking the beautifully landscaped Forest Pavilion, the Pope Family’s latest venture, Side Wok, offers the island’s first and only pan-Asian takeout. 2022 In any given season, on any given day, the Market might host a lavish oyster roast on the side porch, an intimate wine dinner featuring Bordeaux • PARTY DATES • from Claude’s cellar, or a Howl at the Moon party for hundreds at Beach Access The party starts just before sunset at Beach Access 39. 39. The common theme? Come as you are, kick up your heels, and enjoy good food, libations and the fellowship of friends, old and new. 1/17, 2/16, 3/18, 4/16, 5/15, 6/14, 7/13, 8/11, Ten years have flown by, but the more things change, the more they stay the 9/10, 10/9, 11/8, 12/8 same. Whether you’re a longtime islander or a first-time visitor, you’re treated like family by the Maritime Market family the moment you walk in the door.
