SOAK IT ALL IN. SENSORY STIMULATORS It can take a day or so to adjust to Bald Head Island’s relaxed pace—“Turtle Time” as the locals call it. Eighteen miles per hour is the fastest your golf cart can take you without risking a ticket, which sets an easy tempo. But really, if you want to soak up the surroundings, bicycles are a much-preferred mode of transportation—efficient enough to cover lots of ground, but slow enough to ensure you don’t miss a thing.
Bald Head Island’s beauty is a feast for your eyes, but no less stimulating for your other senses. A bike ride may grant the sweet call of buntings in the yaupon along Federal Road … the redolent scent of marsh along Bald Head Creek … or the salty hint of sea spray on your lips as you pedal up the dune ridge. After a while, the burning in your legs subsides and you settle in, muscles remembering what it was like to be 10 years old, with nothing but blue sky up ahead. It’s then that the thought crosses your mind, How lucky am I to be alive here today, in this of all places? And the kid inside of you pushes hard again on the pedals and replies, Lucky indeed. Biking aside, nothing can be more head clearing than a long walk—unless it’s a walk in the woods. The Japanese have perfected the art of Shinrinyoku or “forest bathing,” which involves absorbing and connecting with the atmosphere of the forest. If you’re not familiar with the concept, this is no strenuous hike with a predetermined destination. Rather, you’ll head into the woods with a commitment to noticing what’s around you—sunlight filtering through trees, the hum of cicadas, the spongy feel of moss, the rich scent of earth—and wait for a feeling of contentment and tranquility to wash over you. It’s that simple. Researchers report the practice can reduce stress hormone production, boost the immune system, slow heart rate, lower blood pressure and increase feelings of wellbeing. We suggest you perfect your forest bathing technique by setting out from one of the Bald Head Woods trailheads you’ll find in the island’s nearly 200-acre maritime forest preserve. For a guided experience of the island’s ecosystems, the Bald Head Island Conservancy offers a Nature Exploration Tour that embarks from the “Hatchling Hut” located near the island ferry landing. During the two-hour program, you’ll search for wildlife among the island's maritime forest, salt marsh and pristine beaches. At the Conservancy’s campus, you’ll experience their new educational spaces, visit Turtle Central gift shop and grab an obligatory Italian ice from nearby Mike’s Bites.
BALD HEAD ISLAND’S BEAUTY IS A FEAST FOR YOUR EYES... haven 29
FREE FLOATING There’s no better way to explore the island’s serpentine creeks than by kayak, rented through Coastal Urge or Riverside Outdoor Recreation. Be mindful of the tide, which can vary by three or four feet from high to low, and plan accordingly. A higher tide will allow you to paddle deeper into the creek’s twists and turns, while a lower tide may reveal more waterbirds feeding along the exposed marsh. No matter the time of day, you’re likely to see egrets and herons, and if you’re lucky, a bottlenose dolphin or diamondback terrapin (a species of special concern monitored by the Bald Head Island Conservancy). The Conservancy offers guided kayak tours with knowledgeable naturalists if you’re hoping for an in-depth view of creek critters. Coastal Urge and Riverside Outdoor Recreation offer guided kayak tours, too. Be sure to reserve online in advance at their websites.
Fish are abundant in Bald Head Creek, Fishing Creek and Cape Creek year-round. Stop by the Bald Head Island Marina Dockmaster Convenience Store for a list of reputable local guides who can take you where the drum, trout and flounder are biting. The BHI Conservancy also offers crabbing and fishing programs for ages 5-12 that meet at the public creek access along Federal Road. For a different perspective on the marsh, reserve a standup paddleboard from Coastal Urge or Riverside Outdoor Recreation. Balancing on a board is easier than it looks, not to mention a ton of fun. First-timers usually start out in the creeks, while more advanced paddlers take to the ocean.
30
IMMERSE YOURSELF. THERE’S NO BETTER WAY TO EXPLORE THE ISLAND’S SERPENTINE CREEKS THAN BY KAYAK... haven 31
MAKE SOME MAGIC. BEACHSIDE BLISS Let’s face it, most BHI vacations center on the beach, and with good reason. Fourteen uninterrupted miles of white sand wrap the island’s perimeter, and the day starts and ends with the sun rising and setting over the water. Each of the island’s beaches has its own vibe. The West Beach waves near Harbour Village tend to be smaller, making it a popular beach for families with little kids. South Beach’s long stretch makes for great strolling and shelling, while East Beach’s larger waves tend to be popular with surfers. At Cape Fear Point, where East Beach and South Beach converge, you’ll find excellent surf fishing, especially in the early morning. Make sure you have a N.C. Saltwater Fishing License (available online) if you’re 16 or older. Be mindful of walking out too far on the cape’s sandbars, as the tide comes in quickly.
32
Don’t bother to lug a surfboard to the island. Board rentals from Coastal Urge and Riverside Outdoor Recreation can be booked in advance or on the fly at beach access 42. Both companies offer lessons, as well, if you want to brush up on your skills. If you’re into skimboarding or want to try it for the first time, Bald Head Island’s uncrowded shoreline is the ideal place to give it a go. Coastal Urge can connect you with a rental skimboard or bodyboard if you didn’t bring your own.
On Bald Head Island, we share the shore with loggerhead turtles, a threatened species monitored and protected for 40 years by the Bald Head Island Conservancy. Nesting season typically runs May through July, while hatching season runs July through November. The Conservancy offers nighttime Beach Patrol Ride Alongs and Turtle Walks for a chance to witness a loggerhead mother lay her eggs or hatchlings emerge from a “boiling” nest. Do your part to protect these majestic creatures by turning your porch lights off if you’re in a home along the beach, using a red film over your flashlight if you’re walking along the shore at night, and filling in any holes you dig in the sand during the day, as they can create deadly obstacles for turtles.
FOURTEEN UNINTERRUPTED MILES OF WHITE SAND….. haven 33
KEEP IT MOVING. PLAYFUL PURSUITS
Researchers continue to tout the benefits of ageless play—taking time out for fun pursuits no matter your birthdate. The Bald Head Island Club and Shoals Club are springboards for indulging your inner child (and perhaps your grandchildren at the same time). If you’re renting, reserve a guest membership in both clubs and you’ll be all set. No island amenity creates more buzz than the Bald Head Island Club’s incredible aquatics center, where it’s the norm to see three generations enjoying time in the sun together. Little kids love the splashpad, slide tower and seaside playground, while bigger kids and adults cool off at the zero-entry leisure pool and waterslides. An adults-only lap pool and poolside cabana bar round out the options.
34
Bald Head Island Club’s sister venue, the Shoals Club, presents its own lively mix of water-based diversions, with a spacious swimming pool, zero-entry kiddie pool and lineup of pool parties during the warmer months. Direct beach access to the cape, with chairs and umbrellas provided by the Shoals Club’s attentive staff, makes spending a day by the ocean a breeze. For a big time without getting your feet wet, court sports are alive and well at the BHI Club. Enjoy a tennis match within view of the ocean or get caught up in the growing pickleball scene. Lessons, round robins and socials take place year-round.
THE BHI CLUB & SHOALS CLUB OFFER THE COMPLETE ISLAND EXPERIENCE... Recently, the BHI Club, always known for its world-class croquet courts (aka greenswards), has taken the sport to the next level with its hiring of husband-and-wife team Jeff and Eileen Soo, two of the world’s top players, as director/instructors. Modern croquet combines the angles and precision of billiards with the strategy and challenge of chess. While the game offers endless fascination for experienced players, complete beginners can have a blast after just a few minutes of instruction. Clinics, lessons, open play and monthly competitions called “scramblers” are available year-round and the very welcoming Croquet Club is always recruiting new members. Both the Shoals Club and BHI Club offer fitness rooms with cardio and strength training equipment so you can stay in shape for all your play dates. Along with private sessions, the BHI Club’s personal trainers offer stretching classes,
water aerobics and for the more ambitious—boot camp. Morning yoga sessions on the Shoals Club presentation deck during the summer months are popular, too. Speaking of yoga, Island Retreat Spa offers beach Vinyasa Flow yoga classes during the warmer months, as well as yoga, barre and Pilates classes on the deck of the Forest Pavilion to help you relax, restore and re-center. Last, but not least, an exquisite 18-hole golf course, rated one of the top resort courses in America, is the crown jewel of BHI Club’s recreational amenities. Some holes take you through the maritime forest, while others parallel the Atlantic Ocean. Clinics for old and young alike are offered by PGA professionals, and the Pro Shop rents clubs and shoes if you don’t feel like bringing yours. Discounted rates for accompanied junior golfers encourage you to make your round an all-ages affair.
haven 35
MEMORY MAKERS Some activities are so unique to Bald Head Island that they belong in a category all their own, connected only by their ability to delight, surprise and make a lasting impression. We suggest that no memory-making trip here is complete without climbing Old Baldy Lighthouse for a breathtaking 360-degree aerial view. Supplement your lighthouse visit with a Historic Tour offered by the Old Baldy Foundation’s knowledgeable educator. Interested in pirates (and who isn’t)? The tour explores their exploits in the area, along with soldiers of all stripes, lifesaving station heroes, light-keeping legends, river pilot daredevils and a host of other colorful characters from the island’s past. Test your wit and your luck with or against family and friends at The Wisp’s ever-popular Trivia Night or Music Bingo Night. The competition can get heated, but don’t fear—you’ll be able to cool down quickly with a cold beer, glass of wine or craft cocktail while you play. We’d argue there’s no better seat for watching the boats come and go, either.
36
Nighttime is the right time to get into a little mischief on the island’s Ghost Walks, presented by The Wisp’s storytellers in the summer months. On this tour for all ages, you’ll wind down moss-draped paths while hearing tales of Theodosia (the lovely ill-fated daughter of Aaron Burr), the infamous Yay-Hoe (a mysterious Big Foot purported to inhabit Bald Head Woods) and the Red-Haired Lady (a flirtatious spirit known to make appearances at Capt. Charlie’s Station). The BHI Conservancy introduces nocturnal inhabitants of an even wilder kind in its Bald Head After Dark tour. Be prepared to encounter frogs, deer, alligators and a few surprises. Don’t forget to bring a sense of adventure and most importantly, bug spray. For a memorable evening that will cost you nothing, we recommend positioning your golf cart on higher ground along South Beach or West Beach at your own drive-in “Sunset Cinema” as you wait for the sun to drop into the ocean (popcorn optional, but highly recommended). Make sure your cart lights are turned off so as not to burn up your battery or confuse any turtles. Stick around for the sky to go dark and experience staggering star gazing as the island’s minimal light pollution allows the Milky Way to shine in a dramatic way. Pro tips: Wait for a night when the moon isn’t bright and download a constellation app ahead of time so you’re ready to identify what you spot in the heavens.
SAVOR THE MOMENT.
Finally, for something completely different, sign up for the BHI Conservancy’s Reptile Roundup where you’ll get the answers to burning questions like Does BHI have venomous snakes? What do box turtles like to snack on? and Do alligators make good moms? You’ll also meet live slithery things (yikes!) and much more. Where else but on BHI?
DON’T FORGET TO BRING A SENSE OF ADVENTURE

At a glance, the two houses in Harbour Village, nearly backing up to each other, look surprisingly similar. Look closer, however, and you’ll notice details that tip you off to their vastly different interiors. The stainless-steel porch railings at 105 Turks Head, for example, foreshadow the home’s cool, contemporary aesthetic, while 48 Transom Row gives off a timeless beach cottage vibe that carries throughout its square footage. The owners, too, use the cottages in different ways. Lisa Lautner, owner of the former, lives on the island full time. For Billy and Barbara Richardson, Bald Head Island is a seaside retreat.

105 TURKS HEAD COURT Opposite page: Talk about a memorable entrance! This eyepopping image at the top of the stairs sets the tone for Lisa’s eclectic art collection found inside. Left: A modern update on a classic coastal cottage, the Lautner home overlooks a quaint common green, providing a spacious lawn just steps away. Double porches across the front of the home expand the living space, including an elevated perch for catching a seasonal breeze over coffee or cocktails.
48 TRANSOM ROW Right: Commanding a presence on the corner of Transom Row and Turks Head Court, the Richardson residence has a small porch at the entry and gracious outdoor living spaces tucked around the side and back of the house. In addition to a large screened porch off the living room, there’s ample decking on the side where you’ll find Billy’s one request during renovations: a fishing closet filled with poles and angling supplies for all generations of Richardsons.

Standing in the gorgeous kitchen of 105 Turks Head Court, Mike Mohler of Project Works looked around and smiled. “It all started with a phone call from Lisa,” he laughed. “She said, ‘Mike, I need you to come look at something with me.’”
While the house had been a long-term rental and was showing its wear, it had good bones, as they say, and together they brainstormed a way to breathe new life into the space. “Lisa knows what she wants,” said Mike. “She has very specific vision and excellent taste. When we finished, there was nothing left of the original house; it was a completely new aesthetic.”

Lisa has owned several properties on Bald Head Island, and Project Works had just finished renovating a house on the marsh for her when a cottage in Harbour Village went on the market. “I wasn’t surprised,” he said. “I knew she had always wanted to live in the harbor.”
105 TURKS HEAD COURT
"L isa knows what she wants. She has very specific vision and excellent taste." Rounding the corner at the top of the stairs, you enter the stunning and spacious kitchen with dark greenish-gray cabinets featuring brushed gold hardware that establishes the house’s next-level look. Suede-textured, black-stone countertops contrast beautifully with the gray veins of the sleek white marble behind the stove and the oversized island’s creamy marble countertop. The new kitchen is in the same general space as the previous one, explained Mike, but some of the appliances have been relocated and a window was added over the sink. The fresh take on nautical continues throughout the upstairs, where shiplap lines the walls, stainless steel cables support the stair rails, and laminate wood-tone floors ground the space.

Personal touches everywhere reflect the owner s love of art, music and family. ’
Above: The recessed alcove where the television hangs used to be a double window. The contractor cleverly sheet rocked the inside to create the wall while leaving the exterior shutters in place to suggest windows, in accordance with architectural guidelines. They did the same in the primary bedroom where two striking pieces of art now hang. Right: In addition to two guest suites and a newly added powder room, a cozy multipurpose room occupies the first floor of the home. Infusing it with purpose and personality, Lisa has placed a carefully curated collection of books, family photographs, games and even a keyboard within reach.

LIVING AREA BEFORE Top right: A tub and small shower in the primary bathroom were replaced with a large shower that has dramatic, fullslab marble walls, a portion of which is visible on the left side of the photo. Opposite, linen closets were removed to create a handsome floating double vanity. Bottom right: Fitting a king-sized bed into the primary suite was a bit of a challenge, solved by replacing a traditional door with a pocket door and relocating the closet. The board-and-batten accent wall behind the bed is a lovely example of the custom trim work throughout the house.

48 TRANSOM ROW “With second homes at the beach, we want to keep it simple and livable, elegant with a nod to coastal,” said Vicky Serany of Southern Studio Interior Design. “And we want to make it timeless—updated, but not trendy.” Left: The kitchen barstools and two of the dining chairs are upholstered for comfort, using performance fabrics for durability and ease of maintenance. The other dining chairs are wooden with simple spindles, a throwback to traditional beach cottages but with an updated shape. The large table was a must for puzzles, games and crafts. Below: Cool blues and grays mix with warm wood and rattan, adding layers of tone and texture.
Casual, In 2006, Billy and Barbara Richardson’s college-aged son came back from visiting Bald Head Island with friends and raved to his parents, “You have to see this place!” Gamely they visited and, like so many others, immediately fell in love with the island and began searching with realtor Doug Oakley for a property to buy. “We looked at several cottages, but I loved the old beach house feel of the one in the harbor,” said Barbara. The family shared countless memories there over the next 11 years, until Hurricane Florence extensively damaged the cottage in 2018. Since it had to be gutted and completely renovated, the Richardsons took the opportunity to modify the layout to better suit them and their extended family.

Left: The main living area is the embodiment of casual sophistication. The architectural details are on full display, with exposed ceiling beams and shiplap walls, while blues in every hue evoke the sky and sea, creating a calming seaside ambiance.
effortless elegance "We love to come here and unwind in all seasons with our children and grandchildren." LIVING AREA BEFORE
Left: The original interior was rustic, with natural wood-stained planks on all the walls. With the renovation, Barbara wanted bright and updated, but also easy to maintain.

A multi-generational getaway, designed to welcome family and friends. The Richardsons have three children and five grandchildren, so maximizing space within the relatively modest 1700 square feet was a priority. Architect Peter Quinn drew the renovation plans, putting a small addition on the back of the home to accommodate a larger primary bathroom and reconfiguring the downstairs to include an additional guest suite, plus a reimagined bunkroom and TV room for the grandchildren. He also added a bathroom in the crofter.
54
Everything old is new again Built 20 years ago, the Richardson home is now virtually brand new, its interior having been renovated down to the studs. In addition to being breathtakingly beautiful, the house is considerably more comfortable for family and guests, with more privacy for everyone and several cozy nooks claimed by the grandchildren for their own. During the redesign process, Billy told Vicky, “Whatever Barbara wants, she can have.” Given that Barbara shed tears of joy during what Vicky called “one of the best reveals ever,” it’s safe to say: mission accomplished.

Celebrating 13 Years as Owners & Operators
t’s hard to believe 13 years have passed since islanders Claude and Melissa Pope became owners and operators of the Maritime Market. Promising to elevate the island’s food and beverage scene, they dove in headfirst back in 2011, expanding the store’s selection to include USDA Prime meats, fresh local seafood and produce,
gourmet deli items, and a curated selection of fine wine and craft beer. In short order, customers came to rely on
the array of offerings and began packing lighter, knowing the Market had it covered. As the years passed, the café was expanded and renamed Sweet Bay Café & Catering, a go-to for breakfast, lunch, complete family meals and event catering. Sharing space with the café, Copper’s Wood-Fired Kitchen has taken the island by storm with its Neapolitan-style pizza. Outside, overlooking the beautifully landscaped Forest Pavilion, the Popes’ latest venture, Side Wok, offers delicious pan-Asian takeout. In any given season, on any given day, the Market might host a lavish oyster roast on the side porch, an intimate dinner featuring Bordeaux from Claude’s cellar, or a Howl at the Moon party for hundreds at Beach • 2024 PARTY DATES • The party starts just before Access 39. The common theme? Come as you are, kick up your heels, and sunset at Beach Access 39. enjoy good food, libations and the fellowship of friends, old and new. 1/25, 2/24, 3/25, 4/23, Time has flown, but the more things change, the more they stay the same.

UNQUESTIONABLY, BALD HEAD ISLAND They say the people make the place. For this issue of Haven, we spoke with longtime island property owners to uncover why Bald Head Island has a hold on their hearts and how they connect to the greater community here. Their answers were at times surprisingly similar, yet always completely personal.
&
…the people make the place.
Left to right: Bianca, Caelyn, Pat, Urijah and Matt Miller
Clockwise from top: Drew, John, Myra, Shepherd, Beau and Ana McVickers
Left to right: Oliver, Dave, Sophia, Jules and Lily Showalter
FAMILY FOCUS Myra and John McVicker are homeowners in The Hammocks, Bald Head Island’s co-ownership neighborhood that gives owners four weeks a year on the island, one in each season. Their son Drew, his wife Ana and their sons Beau (5) and Shepherd (2) spent the week including Memorial Day 2023 on the island with them, reminiscing about their 23-year history with their family’s favorite place. Jules Showalter, co-owner of Jules’ Salty Grub & Island Pub with her ex-husband Dave Showalter, first visited Bald Head Island in 2001 and never looked back. They have owned numerous properties on the island over the two-plus decades
and she currently resides in Harbour Village, close enough to their landmark restaurant to catch the enticing aromas emanating from it. Pat Miller and her husband Ken, now deceased, arrived in September of 1987, looking for a unique place to make a lasting memory in celebration of their 21st wedding anniversary. They fell hard and fast for the island, closing on a property just a few months later, and going on to make countless memories with their children, Matt and Jeannette, as well as their daughter-inlaw, son-in-law, and four grandchildren, ages 12 to 17.
haven 65
Q: WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST IMPRESSION OF BALD HEAD ISLAND? Myra: On the very first trip as a family, we brought our three boys. It was pouring rain on the ferry and they were sitting in front trying to get splashed. They thought it was the most awesome thing ever, our own version of Swiss Family Robinson. Drew: I was nine and just loved being on golf carts instead of in cars. It was an escape from reality, an adventure. Ana: It was just the most magical place. I loved that you could go for a hike in the maritime forest, then to the beach. I’d never experienced so many different worlds in one place, within half a mile of each other. Jules: Dave and I drove up and down the coast, in and out of every little beach town, looking for a place to buy a home. We didn’t see anything we liked, but then Dave told me about a place he had been once before. When we got here, we got in the golf cart and drove down South Bald Head Wynd. I knew right away this is where I wanted to be. Pat: It felt like our magical happy place immediately. We wanted to be part of this island paradise.
Q: WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE PLACE ON BHI, AND WHY? Myra: Every place. I especially love being in a kayak on the creek and catching a view of the chapel with the live oaks surrounding it. Yesterday, we hiked and saw the Timmons Oak. It was incredible. The inside of it reminds me of a chapel, with light filtering in it from the little nooks and knobs. Beau, tucked inside with his little brother, said, “I could live in here.” John: The Point. Just being there with waves crashing from different directions, you feel the vastness. My little troubles seem so small compared to how vast everything is out there. It puts life in perspective. Jules: My favorite place is West Beach. I run my dogs there, watching the ferry come and go. My second favorite place is my back porch. I get the sunrise and the moon in the summer. It’s perfect. Pat: I love being on a dock on the creek by myself. I go there to paint and meditate. There’s also a little bench on the Kent Mitchell Nature Trail that’s a little protected. I stretch out there and take a nap. The kids surfed at East Beach forever, so that’s special, and we’ve always been deeply involved in the chapel. Oh, and the pickleball courts. I got that started on the island, so I’ve been dubbed “The Queen of Pickleball.”
It felt like our magical, happy place immediately.
…just loved being on golf carts instead of in cars. It was an escape from reality, an adventure. Q: WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE TIME OF THE DAY ON BHI?
Q: WHAT IS A MISCONCEPTION ABOUT BHI?
Myra: Sunset, either on the swing at The Hammocks Club or on a bench by Captain Charlie’s Station.
John: People think it’s very bougie, but it’s not. It’s actually very low key.
John: Late afternoons have been my favorite since the boys were younger. Not wanting to disrupt the serious golfers, I would wait until then to take the boys to the golf course. It wasn’t just to play golf; it was to enjoy the whole environment. Wildlife is at its most wild then. We’ve seen a lot of deer, including a huge buck, and so many alligators, ibises, eagles, osprey, foxes, you name it. One time a fox was holding up play because it was stealing golf balls.
Jules: The number one misconception is that everybody here is rich. It’s not true. Everyone has worked hard to be here, and owning a business is more than challenging with island logistics. People are really down-to-earth here. Pat: The biggest misconception is that we are a rich, elite group. In reality, islanders are a group of generous people who contribute immensely to the life that we desire here and feel privileged to be here.
Jules: Sunsets on West Beach. It’s so peaceful. Sometimes I summon my staff to step away from the kitchen and come outside to watch the sun set. It’s the little things that matter. Pat: The sunsets across the street from my house on South Bald Head Wynd are magnificent. haven 67
My best memories are in the people I’ve met and the lifelong friendships BHI has created. Q: DO YOU HAVE FAVORITE MEMORIES YOU’VE MADE ON THE ISLAND? Drew: Before we were married, we were all out in kayaks and a storm was rolling in. Ana and I were in a double kayak, and I spotted a dolphin up the creek and started chasing after it. The sky was black and there was a lot of lightning, so everyone else headed in. I kept going, although Ana was terrified. We did catch up to a baby dolphin and it swam right beside us. Unfortunately, the storm caught up to us and we got very wet. Our hearts were racing, both from the dolphin encounter and from paddling back so fast. Jules: My best memories are in the people I’ve met and the lifelong friendships BHI has created. When my kids were young, three of them were sick at the same time and a doctor came over from Southport on the ferry to treat them. We’ve been friends ever since. Another time I was on a run and I ducked into what was then Eb and Flo’s (now Jules’) to get out of the rain. That’s where I met Erin Duncan, a long-time Bald Head Island Limited employee who became one of my best friends and my children’s godmother. Pat: On our first trip, Ken replaced my original wedding band with a new diamond while we were sitting on the beach. More recently, on the evening of July 27, 2023, my son Matt assisted in the baptism of his two children, aged 14 and 17, on East Beach. That was a highlight.

As a couple, Ken and I were always wrapped up in island organizations, especially the chapel. I led a ladies’ Bible study for years and Ken and I started couples’ retreats. He served in leadership positions with just about every group on the island. When he died, the love and compassion that were poured on me by people on this island was simply amazing. Bald Head Island is like no other place on this earth.
Q: WHAT IS THE BEST THING ABOUT BALD HEAD ISLAND? John: The community. We’ve always wondered if we could live on the island full time, especially in the off season. I’m retired, so we rented a house on the island for all of January and February of 2023. Myra still works in Chapel Hill four days a week, so she came every weekend for three days, but the dog and I stayed the whole time. It was the most awesome experience. This community is incredible. The fulltime residents were so welcoming; things were open and vibrant. I’m definitely doing it again next year. Jules: I’d always wanted to own what was the original Eb & Flo’s, and now I’m living my dream. I’m very proud of what we’ve done in the last four years. It has become first-stop, last-stop for many, and I’m very grateful. This is where all of my friends, who I call family, are. My children have grown up here and all of their best friends come from here. It’s all about the relationships we’ve created. There’s no place like Bald Head. Pat: Everything. One is the change of seasons. I love to walk four miles a day, so in winter, I walk in the sun on the beach. In summer, the shady streets are wonderful protection from the heat. There are so many elements and environments on this island that you just can’t find anywhere else. It’s also a generational family home for us. Matt was a tram driver here for years, and Jeannette worked at the Bald Head Island Club. Now my four grandchildren spend summers working on the island, recreating what their parents had here.
People often come here for the beach or to play golf, but this island is so much more.
The Showalter Family in 2014 Back row: Dave and Jules Front row: Oliver, Sophia, Isaac and Lily
Q: WHAT ARE THE BEST-KEPT SECRETS ABOUT BALD HEAD ISLAND? John: Well, it’s kind of hidden in plain sight, but kayaking on the marsh is not something people immediately think about. They often come here for the beach or to play golf, but this island is so much more. The marsh is our favorite view. You can see so many birds and other wildlife and watch the seasons change. You can enjoy the creek and forest just as much as the beach. Myra: Across from beach access 5, there is a driftwood tepee. You can see Old Baldy from there and you can go inside it. We’ve taken so many wonderful pictures there. Jules: It’s the getaway factor. There are no stoplights, no McDonalds. You can truly get away. Full-time residents enjoy the peacefulness the offseason brings. Pat: There are lots of hidden secret places on the island, if one has eyes to see. I don’t want to tell you mine, so you’ll have the magic of finding yours.
haven 69
Q: WHAT’S THE MOST SURPRISING THING ABOUT BALD HEAD ISLAND?
Q: WHAT DO YOU MISS MOST WHEN YOU ARE NOT ON THE ISLAND?
John: The biggest and best surprise is that the evolution of the island has not changed the overall feel. We were anxious at times, fearing that every new building or business would change the dynamic. Instead, each addition has really made it better.
John: The serenity.
Jules: Owning a business has changed my relationship with the island. We used to come here just to relax and play, but now most of my life revolves around the restaurant. What’s surprising is how much I love it. I have developed relationships with owners, guests and tourists who come back year after year. Many have moved from renters to property owners. As much as I love the busy summers, I really appreciate the offseason more now, too. Pat: Even as the island has grown and changed, it still has our heart and soul. We know changes happen, but those of us who have been here a long time just hope that newcomers are respectful and want to coexist with nature, as we do. We want them to be mindful and protective of the gifts we have been given. Let’s preserve what drew us here in the first place.
Myra: It’s so hard to describe the peacefulness, and the lack of traffic. You can never be too stressed driving a golf cart. Jules: I miss the uncomplicated way of living when I’m away. Crossing the river never gets old; it’s always good to come home. Pat: I get to live here full-time, so I try not to miss out on anything. In my life, I’ve had the best Bald Head Island has to offer and I still do. I’m not leaving until I absolutely have to. Just take me anywhere else and I’ll say take me back to Bald Head! That’s a sentiment shared by many, if not all, of those who are fortunate enough to spend time on this beloved island. No question.
Drew McVicker and son Beau

s a kayaking guide for Riverside Outdoor Recreation, Megan Stephenson gets to experience the majesty of Bald Head Creek and the sprawling marsh day in and day out. Not only does she have one of the most enviable jobs imaginable, suffice it to say she has a keener eye for the natural environment than most, as she holds a Master of Science degree in Conservation Medicine from Tufts University, a program dedicated to addressing global environmental changes and concerns. Over the eight years Megan has conducted tours on the island, she’s noticed a marked decline in the population of migrating monarch butterflies around Marina Park. Hoping to take action to reverse that trend, Megan approached her employers, Harper Peterson and Plunkett Dodge, in early 2023 with an idea to design and implement a pollinator garden in Marina Park. Taken with the idea, Harper mentioned it to island resident Betsi Stephen, who then turned to Grace Valentine. Grace had just become chair of the revitalized Garden Club through the Bald Head Association’s Education and Recreation Committee. Together Betsi and Grace reached out to Village Manager Chris McCall and Mayor Peter Quinn, as well as the Bald Head Island Conservancy, contractors working on the island, and interested island residents.
“It became a true communitywide effort,” said Harper. “It’s astonishing the amount of energy, knowledge and interest that people have shown.”

The Plight of the Monarch ccording to an online article from the Center for Biological Diversity dated May 24, 2022, approximately 99% of all North American monarch butterflies live east of the Rocky Mountains. Every winter they migrate from the northern United States and southern Canada to high-elevation forests in central Mexico. Scientists estimate butterfly populations by measuring the areas of trees turned orange by the clusters of butterflies. The center states that the monarch population has been perilously low since 2008 and they are currently on the candidate waiting list for Endangered Species Act protection. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has a 2024 deadline to propose them for protection as threatened.

Being Protective and Proactive
ald Head Island’s efforts to attract monarchs became official in March 2023 when Mayor Peter Quinn signed the National Wildlife Federation’s Mayors’ Monarch Pledge, a program in which participating communities commit to creating “healthy, sustainable habitat for the monarch butterfly and pollinators while educating residents about how they can make a difference at home and in their community.” Megan had identified seven zones on the island as locations for pollinator gardens and the group decided that Earth Day, April 22, 2023, would be the perfect day for planting Zone 1, just behind the Marina Park bulwark to the north. To design the garden, Megan consulted with BHA board member and veteran gardener John Kinney, who purchased the appropriate plants, transported them to the island and tended them until planting day.
“ So many people got involved, rolled up their sleeves and made it happen.” “It would be impossible to name them all, but we are so grateful for every contribution,” said Grace. The designated date for the planting brought howling winds and driving rain, but volunteers were not deterred. The group persevered, adding another garden on the right side behind the bulwark in the fall. To maintain the gardens, the Village’s public services department installed a sprinkler system and Grace arranged for Garden Club volunteers to water the plants on a rotating schedule.

Becoming a Bee City USA aking the commitment to attract pollinators to the next level, the town council also approved the application process for Bald Head Island to become a Bee City USA in October. Like the Mayors’ Monarch Pledge, the Bee City initiative is concerned with increasing native plantings to conserve and attract native pollinators, as well as providing nest sites and reducing the use of pesticides. “Becoming a Bee City is similar to being designated a Tree City,” explained Betsi, who spearheaded the Bee City USA initiative. “There are certain requirements that hold a town accountable for taking action to protect the environment.” Bald Head Island has been part of the Tree City USA program since 2013, reflecting its commitment to maintaining and growing its tree cover.
“ These initiatives further enhance our shared vision of an island in harmony with nature.”

Being island owners ourselves, we know how important it is to assess a property after a guest checks out. Our homeowners can rest assured our team will be present to oversee all preparations for the next guest’s arrival as well as attend to the needs of every guest during their stay. We take pride in treating each property as it is our own.
WHO WE ARE We have been BHI homeowners since 2008 and spent many years renting properties on BHI before building our own home. After several years of self managing our home, we saw a need to provide a higher level of both service and amenities to our island guests. In order to provide the service we envisioned, we knew we would need to immerse ourselves as a family into hiring the right team of people to fulfill our vision. Based on the reviews and relationships we have achieved over the last three years with both guests and homeowners alike, we are truly thankful with what we have accomplished. We look forward to many more years of enriching our guest’s experiences as well as providing the very best of service for our homeowners.

t’s lunch time on an ordinary Tuesday. Two seventhgraders and one eighth-grader are sitting with two kindergartners and two first-graders in the Forest Pavilion beside the Maritime Market. The middle-schoolers begin discussing their collegelevel robotics project: helping a private enterprise code a scheduling app for first responders. The young students listen, absolutely fascinated, not yet understanding but soaking up the conversation, nevertheless. They are learning new vocabulary, asking questions and undeniably benefiting from the exposure to new ideas.
WELCOME TO THE INAUGURAL YEAR AT BALD HEAD ISLAND ACADEMY Bald Head Island Academy is the brainchild of Sheree and Lou Vaickus. The couple founded the school with invaluable input from three mentors: Kit Adcock, a former long-time island resident who shared their vision, as well as Mary Moss and Vikki-Rose Tunick, the two women who founded Charlotte Lab School, an innovative charter school in Mecklenburg County, N.C.
The Bald Head Island Academy story begins in 2021 when the Vaickuses, who own a pharmaceutical development firm, bought a home on Bald Head Island and began spending time there, working remotely. They had also made the decision to hire a tutor and homeschool their daughter Madison, who has significant bilateral hearing loss, because they felt the public schools in Wake County were not meeting her educational needs and she was falling grade levels behind.
A SCHOOL OF EXCELLENCE After meeting other parents who were also homeschooling their children but did not feel qualified to do so, the Vaickuses decided to move to Bald Head Island full-time, unite with these likeminded people, and embark on their own educational journey: figuring out how to build a school of excellence on an island accessible only by boat. Following a year and a half of meticulous planning and jumping through the many hoops such an undertaking requires, the Vaickuses opened Bald Head Island Academy in May of 2023 with summer enrichment programs and commenced its first full academic year in September. haven 123
READING, WRITING, ARITHMETIC... AND RESPONSIBILITY While Bald Head Island Academy is fully credentialed and complies with all federal and North Carolina educational standards, the curriculum far exceeds the minimum requirements. The school day starts at 9 a.m. and ends at 2:30 p.m. The academic work is rigorous and individualized, infused with lessons about responsibility, stewardship and character development. In addition to their core subjects, the students are assigned chores that alternate each week —such as watering the plants, taking out the trash and cleaning up. It’s part of an overall philosophy articulated in the school’s mantra: Respect for self, respect for others, respect for the environment. “There seems to be a national trend toward asking less of students, but we don’t subscribe to that theory here,” said Sheree. “We believe in challenging children to work hard and achieve their best and we are so happy with how that is playing out. Our students are truly thriving.” “We try to teach to each student’s specific needs, regardless of grade level,” said Head of Curriculum Sarah Tennant. “We are trying to build an educational atmosphere in which we reach the students where they are and bring them to where they need to be and beyond, to where they are capable of reaching.” According to parent Kara Tureski, it’s working. “At Bald Head Island Academy, my child is receiving a tailored education that builds and amplifies his strengths in coding, math and science, while also providing the support he needs,” she said. “The small class size and the caring and compassionate teachers enable experiential learning
124
and a customized educational experience. This school is truly a community resource we should continue to nourish and support.” Sarah came aboard more than a year before the school officially opened and Andrew Hano was hired for the 2023-2024 school year. Both have decades of teaching experience and hold their master’s degree in education. They agree that teaching a variety of grade levels in a small space has its challenges, but the rewards more than make up for it. “What the island has to offer provides great opportunities for making learning real,” said Andrew. “The pollinator gardens, the overlook, the nature trails all provide science-related labs. Old Baldy and Fort Holmes give added historical relevance. The local municipality and businesses offer lessons in the social and political aspects of life.”
Andrew, an island resident, said he loves riding his bicycle to work every day, with the novelty of a golf cart as the alternative mode of transportation. “I also love the scenery, the wildlife, the people,” he said. “I have to remind myself it is real every day!” “The island is our classroom, and we can get up and go out into it,” agreed Sarah. “It makes the school day more fun for all involved and I think the community appreciates seeing the students and can recognize their academic, emotional and social growth.”
IT TAKES A VILLAGE TO BUILD A SCHOOL “This island community built this school,” stated Sheree emphatically. “We wouldn’t be what we are without the support and contributions of so many people on this island who believe in what we are doing.” One of the most significant ways islanders have shown support is through experiential learning or transfer of knowledge. “I call it the Isle of Ideas,” said Sheree. “We have remarkably knowledgeable people on this island who have done amazing things in their lives. Many were the best of the best in their chosen careers, and they have so generously shared their skill sets with our students. I threw the idea out there and residents flooded our doors.” As examples, Sheree lists a mathematician, an artist, a writer and an expert on adolescent character development, all who have given their time and talents to the school. “This is not just basic information,” Sheree stressed. “It’s often highlevel thinking and our students are just soaking it up like sponges.” Countless island businesses and organizations have also stepped up, from the city manager inviting the middle school students to sit in on a city hall meeting to learn how local village rules and governance are made, to an in-depth tour of the public safety building. “This community is invested in having these children learn the fabric of what makes Bald Head Island what it is,” said Sheree, continuing to list supporters. “Students participate in many of the environmental science and stewardship programs available through the Bald Head Island Conservancy. The Maritime Market provides lunchtime space, and the owners of BHI Hardware have been extremely supportive with robotics knowledge, book donations, and are looking into providing carpentry and archery for the middle school students in the future.” The Academy also has plans to add fencing classes to their physical educational offerings, which include running, swimming,
biking and the club sports that are offered through Bald Head Island Club memberships.
ACCESSIBILITY AND INCLUSION BEYOND THE BUBBLE The vision for Bald Head Island Academy has always included achieving a socio-economic balance in the student population. In addition to the full-tuition students, the school operates a lottery system in which children of qualifying island employees can apply to attend with 100 percent of their expenses paid. Students are randomly selected as spaces become available. At the time of this writing, there were 15 students on the waitlist. “We would love to enroll them all,” said Sheree, “but the funding is not there yet. We are working on fundraising for all aspects of the school, including expanding our student body, hiring Spanish and Mandarin teachers, and building our own facilities.” The school is currently housed in a rental space in The Esplanade on Maritime Way, with plans to expand significantly over the next five to 10 years. As she summarizes the school year just a couple of months in, Sheree is exuberant and expectant. “We have a stated mission and a mantra, and we are seeing what we are saying,” she said. “The success rate so far is overwhelming and we’re just getting started.”
