efore you even step off Bald Head Island’s ferry, you’re struck by the way the sun dances on the white hulls of skiffs moored in the marina, and the way the water, when it’s dead calm, makes a perfect mirror. Two-story cottages line up like spectators along the bulkhead, boats float parallel in their slips, and the ferry’s insistent horn marks every hour on the half hour, like clockwork. You’ve arrived at the island’s orderly front door, but don’t be fooled. This is a wild place.

ow a place can be so civilized and so untamed at once is a true mystery. Spotted from a seaside porch, a dolphin leaps, twirls and vanishes. Overtaking a boardwalk, sea oats glow in the August sun. Set the Wheels in Motion Get It in Gear

When you want to cover lots of ground quickly (a relative term on an island with a speed limit of 18 mph), you can rent an electric cart from Cary Cart Co., use the one that comes with your rental home, or better yet, opt for a bicycle. Make it your goal to pedal from one side of the island to another. Starting in Harbour Village, the most direct route to the cape is about five miles. We recommend a more circuitous loop along the ocean then back down Federal Road for a snapshot of beach, maritime forest and creek environments in one round trip. Forget about lugging a bike to the island—both Coastal Urge and Riverside Adventure Co. can rent you one by the day or by the week.

Give Me the Run Around

If you’re a runner, you’re in luck on Bald Head Island. The island’s relatively flat, carfree paved wynds through the forest make for a very pleasant morning jog. At low tide the island’s beaches also provide ample running room with incomparable scenery. If you’re feeling competitive, or just want to come out for a good cause, sign up for a Turtle Trot with the Conservancy or the annual Run for the Light race hosted by the Old Baldy Foundation during National Lighthouse Weekend in August.

It Never Gets Old

Whether it’s your first time or your hundredth, a climb to the top of Old Baldy is always worth the effort. Commissioned by Thomas Jefferson, North Carolina’s oldest lighthouse still stands tall after more than 200 years. In addition to a panoramic aerial view of the island and surrounding area, admission to climb the lighthouse includes access to the Smith Island Museum of History, where you’ll find artifacts illuminating the duties of a lighthouse keeper. If you have a couple of hours, take a guided historic tour from the Old Baldy Foundation for an in-depth exploration of the island’s past, complete with tales of pirates, ghosts, river pilots and soldiers of all stripes. 34

the mainland, cars take a back seat to open-

air modes of transport. Make plans to hit the road by cart, bike, skateboard, scooter or your own two feet.

Venture Off Road

Along Federal Road several trailheads enter the Bald Head Woods Preserve, a nearly 200-acre area of undisturbed maritime forest. While you’re there, look for the ancient Timmons Oak and keep an eye out for Keebler Elves, or absent that, white-tailed deer. Just off Federal Road, the M. Kent Mitchell Nature Trail rewards hikers with spectacular views of the creek and close encounters with fiddler crabs and wading birds when the tide is low.

If you’re renting, be sure to request a temporary membership in both the Bald Head Island Club and the Shoals Club to enjoy the complete island experience. Both clubs are relaxed and family friendly with a range of amenities and activities to suit all ages.

Welcome to the Clubs Set Some Shoals Goals

The oceanfront Shoals Club, which overlooks the Point of Cape Fear, offers a spacious swimming pool, along with a separate baby pool for the smaller set. Pool-goers enjoy sunning on the ample decks and showering off in the convenient locker rooms. When you’re ready for a change of pace, round up the family for a little friendly competition on the nearby bocce ball courts. Direct access to the cape is another a perk for members and temporary members of the Shoals Club. Just grab a towel, chair and umbrella provided by the attentive staff, and hit the beach.

Make a Splash

When you’re ready to cool off, the Bald Head Island Club’s aquatics complex takes warm weather fun to the next level. The facility includes an Olympic-sized lap pool, leisure pool and zero-entry pool. Children will enjoy the giggle-

inducing splash pad, slide tower, waterslides and seaside playground, while adults can find refreshment at a poolside cabana bar that specializes in frozen drinks. During the summer, the Club offers water aerobics and poolside yoga, too.

Have a Ball

Reserve a tennis court at the BHI Club and enjoy a match within view of the ocean. Clinics and private lessons for kids and adults are available with one of the U.S. Professional Tennis Association staff members during the summer. For a change of pace, give it a go on the immaculate croquet greenswards where the Bald Head Island Croquet Club plays, practices and holds international championships. From June to September they host Family Croquet, relaxed gatherings where you can learn how the game is played.

Tee It Up

Whatever you do, don’t leave the island without playing a round or two on the BHI Club’s stunning golf course. The 18-hole beauty winds its way along the Atlantic Ocean and through the maritime forest, providing scenic views at every turn. If your game could use some work, head to the range where you can warm up, take a lesson from a PGA Golf Pro, or join a clinic and perfect your swing. No gear? No problem. The kind folks at the Pro Shop rent clubs and shoes if you need them. Junior golfers enjoy discounted rates, so make it a family affair.

Spending time in nature can lower your blood pressure and improve your mood. There’s no better place to take it outside than Bald Head Island, where the wildlife far outnumbers humans and 10,000 acres of forest and tidal creeks are set aside forever as preserves. Think of it as your own natural playground.

A Breath of Fresh Air Take Flight

Every season of the year, Bald Head Island is home to an impressive array of birds—around 250 species in total. Link up with a Bald Head Island Conservancy Birding Tour to see how many you can find, or join Conservancy staff on a Middle Island Exploration Tour for a rare opportunity to visit the Ibis Pond, a private sanctuary where our feathered friends congregate. If you’re exploring on your own, keep an eye out for ospreys around the golf course, egrets along the marsh edge, painted buntings flitting in the brush beside Federal Road, and the occasional bald eagle perched high atop the tree canopy.

Let the Creek Speak

Through the Bald Head Island Conservancy, you can take guided kayak tours to explore the meandering creeks, where you’ll likely see egrets and herons, and maybe even a dolphin or alligator. The Sail Shop offers guided trips along Bald Head Creek and Fishing Creek in single and double kayaks. These 90-minute tours are packed with history, stories and wildlife spotting, but if you’d rather go out on your own, the Sail Shop can provide you with a kayak or canoe, life jacket and paddle, and send you on your way. Coastal Urge rents kayaks, too. You’ll want to book online before making your way to their Board Room outpost along Keelson Row.

Walk on the Wild Side

The Bald Head Island Conservancy brings the island’s wildlife up close and personal with kid-friendly Crabbing & Fishing Trips, Reptile Round-Ups, and Hands-On Dissection. The whole family’s welcome on the Conservancy’s Bald Head After Dark Tour, which introduces the nocturnal creatures of the island, including frogs, bats, alligators and deer. After a brief presentation, you’ll join a naturalist on a flashlight-led walk to see what critters you can spot. The island’s minimal light pollution provides for a breathtaking view of the night sky, too.

Slow and Steady Wins the Race

Join the Bald Head Island Conservancy staff on their summer evening UTV patrols with the Sea Turtle Ride Along, watch for turtle tracks leading from the waves to the dunes, and call back to base with your findings. If you’re in the right place at the right time, you could see a loggerhead turtle lay her eggs or witness a nest hatch. The Conservancy also holds seasonal nightly Turtle Walks for members, which start at the Barrier Island Study Center and then move to the beach for a brief lesson in ecology. If the timing is right, your group will watch a turtle dig her nest and lay her eggs while the Conservancy sea turtle monitoring team collects data. Later in the season, you may get to see a nest hatch.

Bald Head Island's 14 miles of shoreline offer endless opportunities to get your daily dose of vitamin D. Don't worry about lugging your gear to the island. The Sail Shop, Riverside Adventure Co. and Beach & Baby Equipment Rental can outfit you with boards, beach games, umbrellas, chairs and sunshades so you can kick up your heels or kick back on the beach.

Your Day in the Sun It’s Better at the Beach

Each of Bald Head Island’s beaches presents its own charms. If you have the time, we suggest you explore all three. South Beach’s long strand is ideal for strolling and shelling. Along West Beach near Harbour Village, you’ll find kids splashing in the shallow surf and waving as the ferry goes by. Out on East Beach, the waves tend to be bigger and the surfers and boogie boarders make the most of a good thing.

Catch Some Waves

If you want to learn how to surf, sign up at the Sail Shop in Harbour Village or at their Surf Tent at Access 42 on East Beach. The Sail Shop’s experienced instructors offer 60-minute lessons for ages six through adult that will have your whole crew catching waves in no time. For more experienced beach bums, the Sail Shop also offers hourly, daily and weekly surfboard rentals.

Make a Stand

Take a standup paddleboard (SUP) excursion with Coastal Urge for a novel way to explore the island’s waters or simply rent a paddleboard if you want

to head out on your own. Book online first, then stop by the Board Room on Keelson Row in Harbour Village to pick up your board. The Sail Shop offers SUP rentals by the hour, day or week, too. First timers usually start out in the creeks, while more adventurous paddlers take to the ocean.

Get Hooked

Surf fishing aficionados flock to the Point of Cape Fear just as the sun comes up, and more often than not their efforts are rewarded with a catch of bluefish, red drum or flounder. You can cast right from the beach as long as you have a N.C. Saltwater Fishing License (available online). All the gear you need can be purchased at the Dockmaster Convenience Store or at Island Hardware. When you’re ready to land the big one, local guides will take you offshore in search of mahi, tuna and tarpon. Inquire at the Dockmaster Convenience Store for a recommendation. If you’d rather stay closer to shore, the Sail Shop offers fourhour fishing tours of the island’s creeks by kayak.

In a salute to Bald Head Island’s exemplary architecture, Haven chose a few of the island’s most iconic homes to explore how the overall environment and site topography informed the architect’s design choices, both inside and out. THE FOUNDATIONAL INFLUENCE: CAPTAIN CHARLIE’S STATION “To look at architectural influences on Bald Head Island, you’d have to go back to when the Smith family owned it in the late 1700s,” said Travis Gilbert, historian for the Old Baldy Foundation. “The first beach cottage on the island, called Sea Castle, was owned by Benjamin Smith, the last in the family to own the island. He later became governor of North Carolina.”

Gilbert said there are no photographs, illustrations or

descriptions of Sea Castle, but one can assume it was a very simple, one-story cottage with porches or verandahs. 50

“People came to the beach to escape the city and capture the sea breezes, so we can make assumptions that the structure would have been built with those ideas in mind,” he said. “Coastal residences back then were less about style and architectural detail, and more about practical choices.” As for Captain Charlie’s Station, the trio of cottages was built in 1903 and named for Captain Charles Swan, the Cape Fear Lighthouse keeper who lived there with his family until 1933. The cottages are the oldest standing homes on the island. “One of my favorite elements of Captain Charlie’s is, when you look at the front, you see second story windows, but they provide no view,” said Gilbert. “Why on earth would you obscure the view, especially one that beautiful?” Gilbert explained that,

true to the practicality of the time, the windows were not put there for aesthetic considerations. “They are 19th century air conditioning. As the heat rises, the windows act as vents, with the porch overhangs to protect it from storms,” he said. Captain Charlie’s breathtaking dune ridge site was likely chosen for its high elevation, which protected the structures from storm surge while providing a clear view of Frying Pan Shoals, the site of countless shipwrecks.

BUILDING ON A PHILOSOPHY OF SENSITIVE DEVELOPMENT While there were plans for development on Bald Head Island in 1916 and 1938, those were eventually abandoned. With the exception of 19 pioneering “Generator Society” families who established homes on the island in the 1970s, the building of new homes, amenities and infrastructure did not begin in earnest until 1983 when the Mitchell Family bought the unsold portions of the

island and created Bald Head Island Limited. “From the beginning, the developer had an overarching philosophy we called eco-romanticism,” said Chuck Dietsche, an architect who served as Bald Head Island Limited’s planning and development director from 1990-1993. Dietsche worked with architect Dan Costa to bring the Mitchells’ vision to fruition. “We wanted to make Bald Head Island the best place it could be, considering there would be human infusion into this beautiful landscape,” Dietsche said. “The driving question from the beginning has been: How can the natural landscape and manmade landscapes work together in a sensitive way?” Dietsche said a desire to remain subordinate to nature continues, even as the island’s cottages have evolved to satisfy the demand for larger homes. “We still want to create homes that don’t soar above the landscape, but rather are embraced by it,” said Diestsche. “It’s our challenge as architects to design larger-scale buildings, but still maintain the soul of a cottage.” haven 51

AT 5,500 SQUARE FEET, Castello della Balena (Castle of the Whale) is quite large, yet its foundation design incorporates arched corridors to provide a continuous view to the sea. Numerous breezeways and porches add to the lightness of its base, a feeling that continues upstairs where large windows on all sides showcase panoramic vistas of both East Beach and South Beach, as well as Frying Pan Shoals. The home’s initial inspiration, a castle, is found in its central tower, thick walls, and small foyer that is loosely analogous to a castle’s keep. After ascending the narrow entry stairwell, visitors arrive, metaphorically, in the belly of the beast. The castle and whale themes combine to capture the essence of fantasy the owners envisioned. 52

I desperately wanted to be a good steward of that spectacular site overlooking the Point of Cape Fear. The metaphor of the great white whale from Moby-Dick came from my feeling that this could be my own elusive, impossible quarry. I wanted to create something that was up to the site, as well as the aspirations of the homeowners, who were true visionaries. Among many other considerations, the home was designed to follow the contour along the top of the ridge, to fit into the landscape like an organic being, and not overwhelm it. The whale analogy is borne out by imagining the easternmost end (where the kitchen is) as the mouth, and the separate guesthouse and studio at the opposite end as the tail. - CHUCK DIETSCHE

MEANT TO EVOKE A SENSE OF SERENITY, Om Sweet Home’s interior is infused with light and warmth. Strategically placed windows filter sunlight throughout, and ubiquitous intricately carved wood details add warmth to the clean lines and contemporary Asian-inspired aesthetic. The home was designed with large spaces for entertaining, yet with the flexibility to feel intimate for smaller gatherings of friends and family. The owners, who’ve lived and traveled around the globe, sought to create a place of retreat within the haven that is Bald Head Island.

home. Adjacent to the sleek kitchen, a built-in dining

banquette epitomizes casual sophistication. Arguably the best room in the house isn’t technically in the house.

Led by the principals of Feng Shui, the house is a great mix of classic Shingle Style elements and detailing, with fundamentals of Asian function, flow and harmony. The owners spent most of their time in East Asia and really wanted to have a traditional American coastal home with a strong layout that reflected their way of life. The goal of the design was to stay nestled into the trees to allow for protection and shade for the house, while keeping the beautiful natural vegetation in place. We designed a small pool on the second deck, with a hidden rooftop deck to take advantage of the views. - DAVID LISLE

A MARVELOUS MIXTURE OF STYLE AND SETTING, the Southern Living Idea House at Cape Fear Station is both casual and refined. Living spaces seamlessly flow from inside to outside, especially given the extensive outdoor kitchen and dining spaces, deep porches and backyard gathering area around the fire pit. A second-story crofter cottage, BHI’s upscale answer to the garage apartment, is a showstopper of whimsy and charm. Throughout, the home fulfills the architectural designer’s intention to create a place that invites you to kick off your shoes, throw open the doors, plop down and say “Ahhh.” 56

The over-arching priority of the design was to allow the occupants to enjoy Bald Head Island’s lush, beautiful coastal environment. The lot, situated on a corner and facing The Common, offered the opportunity to blur the edges from inside to out, serving as an invitation to the extensive porches, courtyard and beyond. The design itself is one room deep, which offers views and natural light from two or three sides, and provides the opportunity to naturally ventilate most months of the year. The sea breezes are life giving, but can weigh heavily on some building materials, so the materials and configurations were selected to withstand the coastal conditions. - ERIC MOSER haven 57

NAMED FOR THE OWNER’S GRANDFATHER who was a nature lover and avid outdoorsman, Talmadge pays tribute to its namesake inside and out. At once fanciful and practical, the house is nestled on a heavily wooded site across from East Beach, and a tree theme plays out in gorgeous detail inside the home. The classic cottage shape and romantic Victorian exterior details give the impression that this home could have been a treasured family heirloom, handed down from generation to generation.

Entirely a product of its site, this home presents one face on the street side and something entirely different on the shear zone side. The front is a traditional woodsy cottage along a neighborhood street. On the back, you see a tree house peeking out over the forest canopy with no apparent access from East Beach. It seems hidden, mysterious even, and it’s not easy to tell which house it is when you try to locate it on the street side. It has a foot in each environment and was designed to look like it’s been there forever. - CHUCK DIETSCHE

THIS HANDSOME HOME is filled with wow factors, from the vaulted cypress ceiling with steel support rods on the main living level to the open third floor’s epic views of the harbor on one side and the river on the other. Flexibility is another consistent feature. The owner wanted a house that was comfortable and intimate for one but could expand to fit his guest requirements. Many of the rooms serve multiple purposes, and the kitchen’s large island with a solid black walnut countertop functions beautifully as a bar, a gathering place and a dining room table. In tribute to the home’s marina location, a subtle nautical theme is in play throughout. The large harborside porch provides a grand space for outdoor living and incredible views of the marina and Old Baldy beyond. 60

For Bald Head Island, the harbor presents an urban environment, unlike the rest of the island. As a designer, you consider how to take advantage of the views, the breezes and the sunlight, yet maintain privacy with neighbors just a few feet away. Here, the third floor is private because it’s so high up. Throughout the home as you step down, you get some narrow and some long views, including all the way down the marsh, of the lighthouse, and of the marina itself. The kitchen is on the eastern edge to catch the morning sun, with an intimate porch to enjoy your morning coffee. Another larger porch, also facing the marina, is just off the living room, where you might gather for evening cocktails. – PETER QUINN

NESTLED INTO A CLEARING that spans three lots, Morning Light is so well integrated with its maritime forest environment, it looks as if it could have grown out of the earth alongside the trees that encircle it. The homeowners and architect wanted to celebrate the forest setting, so the lines between exterior and interior are not only blurred, but feel seamless at times. Walls of windows, exposed rafters and beams, and naturally finished wood throughout the house salute an American primitive aesthetic that mixes gorgeously with classical Asian details.

here, the shoji screen at the home’s entrance is a living piece of art that can be

changed with the seasons. The owner designed and

made much of the furniture himself, including this long,

live-edged pine table for the screened porch. Elevated

and tranquil, the sleeping porch is easily one of the

most peaceful spaces in the home.

We first determined a viable footprint that preserved a stately live oak hidden within, a venerable living sculpture with its gnarled trunks and gigantic arched limbs that created a natural cathedral of vaulted space and filtered light. Guided by our commitment to preserve the natural features, the building itself is broken into various smaller components that meander within the preliminary footprint and also extend vertically, meandering still with decks, screened porches, windows and rooflines serving as an architectural counterpoint to the organic form of the oak. The space between the natural and architectural is the essential experience of the design: marrying the tree to the home and its interiors, and the home to the tree and the forest beyond. – MICHAEL MOOREFIELD

t’s hard to believe a decade has passed since islanders Claude and Melissa Pope became owners and operators of the Maritime Market. Promising to elevate the island’s food and beverage scene, they dove in headfirst back in 2011, expanding the store’s selection to include USDA Prime meats, fresh local seafood and produce, gourmet deli offerings, and a curated selection of fine wine and craft beer. In short order, customers came to rely on the extensive offerings and began packing lighter, knowing the Market had it covered. When Bob and Holly White talk about their nearly 20-year history with their Bald Head Island home, they often refer to Cape Watch Cottage as she, not it. That’s only fitting. After all, this stately home has a stunning presence, a distinct personality and a place of honor in the family’s collective story.

rom her perch overlooking Bald Head Island’s stunning South Beach, Cape Watch Cottage stands like a devoted matriarch waiting to welcome her family home. Over her nearly two decades, she has borne witness to the four White children coming of age, including two who now bring their own children to the island. She has been the venue for countless holiday gatherings, a bachelorette weekend and a surprise engagement party. Several new mothers have spent weeks of maternity leave in her nurturing environment, and for years a group of Holly’s friends gathered every October to spend time with one of their own whose diagnosis made every minute exceedingly precious.

Setting The Scene “Twenty years ago, we had relatively young children in their formative years,” explained Bob. “We were looking for a place that felt safe, where we wouldn’t have to be paranoid about letting them loose. We wanted them to be able to hop on bikes, go to the beach, get an ice cream, all the things you want kids to do. It was also important that it be a dog-friendly place. Bald Head Island meets that test, then and now.” Though she, too, was smitten with the island on her first visit, Holly wasn’t sure building the house was the right decision. She was leery of the financial commitment and the logistics of traveling from their northern Virginia home.

“I still can’t believe we pulled it off,” she marveled, thinking back. “I really thought we couldn’t do it, like it was way beyond us. But here we are. It has always been a priority for both of us to make it work.” “We set out to build a place to entertain family and friends,” added Bob, “but we didn’t realize how rich those relationships would become.”

An Ode To Family Custom designed by Chuck Dietsche, AIA, and finished in 2003, Cape Watch Cottage is an architectural blend of classically coastal and delightfully whimsical. Everything about her design points to devotion to family, friends and fun. She was completely renovated in 2019, receiving a rejuvenating facelift as she prepares to enter her third decade on the island. “She’s like brand new,” said Bob. One of the home’s defining characteristics has always been an outdoor concrete Ping-Pong table that sits in a little courtyard on the street side of the property. “People often refer to Cape Watch

Cottage as ‘the Ping-Pong table house,’ ” said Holly. “It has seen a lot of action, from endless table tennis matches to serving as an impromptu dance floor.” The porches, too, are popular gathering spaces, setting the stage for everything from dramatic interludes to comic relief. “Being on the island is rocking chair time,” said Holly. “Anything goes on those porches. We have laughed uproariously, and we’ve had some of our hardest conversations there.” Holly said embracing extended family time at Cape Watch Cottage has always been the draw. It has become the norm for three generations to gather together, and for one special Thanksgiving, Holly’s mother was also there, bringing the generational total to four. All of the White children live in the Washington, D.C. area, as do Bob and Holly. However, because of busy schedules, it isn’t easy to get the clan together. So once a year, the entire brood tries to make it down for family week. “I’ve learned to say we will be on Bald Head during these times and would love to have you,” said Holly. “It’s easier than trying to coordinate so many schedules. Fortunately, they all try

hard to get here.” In 2018, the family chose Memorial Weekend for their gettogether, and Bob hatched a plan to make the trip easier, and much more memorable. “He rented a Sprinter van, which was quickly dubbed ‘the party bus,’ and he showed up at each house fully decked out in Bermuda shorts and a driver’s cap,” laughed Holly. “They crammed the entire family, all of their luggage and a bunch of baby gear into the van and drove down. It was hilarious.”

A Role In Many Memoirs The Whites have had Cape Watch Cottage on the rental program since she was built, a choice they have never regretted nor resented. “It was a financial decision, to be sure,” said Holly, “but it’s also better for the property not to sit unused. We love to come in the shoulder seasons, so we are delighted for others to enjoy her during the summer.” To welcome their guests, Holly leaves a gift bag with Cape Watch branded items and includes a personal note. “We have had so many lovely comments about the house over the years, and one family has rented every year for the past 20,” said Holly. “It makes us happy to know others are loving her and making their own memories here.” As longtime members of both the Bald Head Island Club and 74

the Shoals Club, the Whites also offer those privileges to their guests. Personally they tend to use the Bald Head Island Club more often, as Bob likes to play golf and Holly uses the gym when she isn’t riding her bike or swimming in the ocean. “We also enjoy taking the grandchildren to the new aquatics center at the BHI Club,” said Holly. “They absolutely love it. It’s a young parents’ dream.”

The Next Chapter While what happens next isn’t entirely mapped out, Holly said she began speaking her pipe dream out loud about five years ago. “My hope is to spend summers in New Hampshire, and three months each in the spring and fall on Bald Head Island,” said Holly. “We will maintain a small place in the D.C. area to see the children and grandchildren, and probably even escape to Bald Head some in the winter to enjoy the temperate climate when it’s snowing in New Hampshire and D.C.” For now, as autumn approaches, they make their way back to Bald Head Island and Cape Watch Cottage to “reclaim her” as they say, after the rental season. While it may have been months since they’ve been in her company, they find it’s just like reuniting with a family member or best friend. They simply pick up midstride, as if no time at all has passed.

Conservancy FROM THE GENERATOR SOCIETY TO FUTURE GENERATIONS BY ODETTE EMBERT ARNOLD

hey were here before ferries ran residents and visitors to and from Bald Head Island, and before you could just pop by the Maritime Market for a bottle of rosé and a wedge of brie. Long before there were paved roads, a myriad of shops and restaurants, and a couple of lovely clubs, there was a small group of families who came to Bald Head Island by private boat or single-engine plane, loaded down with everything they would need for the duration of their stay—from food to fuel to blocks of ice. These first islanders built their homes on Bald Head Island in the early to mid 1970s, years before electricity arrived on these shores. Because they ran their homes exclusively on generators for a few hours in the morning and again in the evening, they christened themselves The Generator Society. Recognizing the irreplaceable nature of Bald Head Island’s unspoiled beauty and diverse ecosystems, this intrepid group, whose love for the island more than made up for the lack of conveniences, began taking measures to preserve and protect her. With seed money from the Mitchell Family, who had purchased the island’s unsold land just a few months earlier in 1983, they established the Bald Head Island Conservancy. Serving as the first board of directors, Thad Wester, James Harrington, James Harper, Betty Timberlake and Kent Mitchell signed the Articles of Incorporation of Bald Head Conservancy on October 24, 1983. The document was filed two weeks later, and on November 8, the nonprofit was formed. As this excerpt from the original articles demonstrates, nearly four decades later the mission that shaped the organization then still guides it today: Within this area, the corporation shall seek to conserve the land,

water, beaches, marshland, woodland and open spaces, and the plant and animal life therein; to protect the air and waters surrounding the area against pollution; and to maintain and preserve the unique scenic vistas of this region. “That is such a visionary document, especially for 37 years ago,” said Christopher Shank, PhD., executive director of the Bald Head Island Conservancy since 2016. “None of the founding members were marine scientists, but they were so wise in how they set it up. It is a holistic ecosystems view, recognizing that all parts of the island rely on each other.” Shank said it is extremely fortunate that the island’s new developer was committed to an environmentally progressive plan. “Without the foresight of the Conservancy’s founding members and the Mitchell Family, Bald Head Island as it is today would not be possible,” he said. “Kent Mitchell as one of those original people is a big statement.”

“In the early 1990s, when we bought a home on Bald Head, the Conservancy was the organization with which everyone wanted to be associated,” said Kit Adcock, who has been an active member of the Bald Head Island Conservancy since 1991, including serving as president of the board of directors in 2001. “When we bought our home here, it was all about the natural environment.” Adcock recalled the early days of the Conservancy, when the office was in an enclosed storage shed adjacent to the original firehouse at the current Village Creek Access, the residential space was in Captain Charlie’s #1, and the classroom was in an adjacent storage building. In 1996, on land donated by the Cynthia and George Mitchell Family, the current campus at the end of Federal Road opened with larger residential and office spaces, as well as Turtle Central, a retail store that sells merchandise to benefit the Conservancy. As the programs continued to grow, so did the need for space. In 1999 and 2000, the Conservancy formed a long-range planning committee led by Thad Wester, of which Adcock was a member. “With the success of Turtle Central, the growth of Bald Head Island, and the emphasis owners and visitors placed on BHI’s environmental majesty, the committee’s effort was broad-based and open-minded,” said Adcock.

The committee had big dreams of significantly expanding the facility and programs to include all areas of the island in all months of the year, and to reach not only all of the people who come and go from Bald Head Island, but to have an impact beyond its borders. With the opening of the Barrier Island Study Center in 2012, they brought it all to fruition.

The first community-based barrier island research and education facility in the nation, the Barrier Island Study Center (BISC) is a beautiful, 5,000-square-foot campus that includes large classrooms, a wet and a dry laboratory, viewing rooms and dormitories. Not only is the work being done there dedicated to protecting the environment, so is its design. The Barrier Island Study Center is one of only a few buildings in the state to be awarded LEED Gold Certification. “This is a unique place,” said Shank. “Not many places have all of the components we do. We’ve become an important research center for interns and visiting scientists from all of the state’s major universities, and we have programs for all ages that are open to the public.” Beyond the campus, the Conservancy offers visitors and field researchers immediate access to some of the most vibrant and largely unspoiled ecosystems in the region: Bald Head Island’s 14 miles of beaches and dunes, 10,000 acres of salt marshes, and 193 acres of preserved maritime forest.

For many of the early years, the Bald Head Island Conservancy was best known for its loggerhead sea turtle program. Since its inception, the Conservancy has worked in cooperation with the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission and the National Marine Fisheries Service in identifying, tracking and protecting the vulnerable species. Shank said that while the scope of the Conservancy’s work has expanded significantly, the turtles are still an important part of what they do. “Through a collaboration with Dr. Brian Shamblin at the University of Georgia, we are now looking at genetics and getting DNA samples from turtle eggs,” said Shank. “We have

discovered that about one-third of the turtles that nest on Bald Head Island only nest here. The rest are not site specific to BHI, which contradicts the old story that turtles return to the beach where they were born to nest. That’s not necessarily true.” In recent years, the Conservancy has also significantly expanded its reach with both the Girl Scouts and the Boy Scouts, as well as with public school children. For example, nearly every sixth-grader in Brunswick County comes to Bald Head Island for a one-day class on the ecology of the island. Shank cited additional current work, including maritime forest studies that look at the impact of disturbances—such as storms—on the forest canopy and floor, the use of drone technology in identifying a destructive invasive plant species, and a computer modeling research collaboration on the quantity and quality of the ground water aquifer, which is a very important potable water source for the island.

Just as the Bald Head Island we now treasure is the result of steps taken by those who came before us, its future depends on today’s stewards and those who will come after. Shank said the challenge in the current digital age is how to keep children engaged in the outside world. “If kids absorb the lessons early, they won’t lose them and they will share them,” he said. To that end, the Conservancy staff has developed several programs that reach children of all ages, including a newly launched club called the Next Generation. Melissa Blackmon, director of development for the Bald Head Island Conservancy, explained that, although the Next Generation is based on Bald Head Island, the intent is to foster a global perspective. “Most visitors are on the island only for a week or two, so we wanted to come up with things kids can do from home,” she said. “We want them to take our mission and vision back with them, and still love it, live it and breathe it wherever they are.” “If the next generation can be hands-on with nature—be in it, smell it, see it, hear it—it will absorb into the soul and never leave,” summarized Shank. “That’s what we’re trying to do. That’s the key to our future.”

n the mid-1970s, the five original homeowners, along with property owners in the process of building, met and agreed that a property owners’ association was needed to create and uphold restrictions for the

preservation, maintenance and thoughtful development of Bald Head Island. They called themselves “The Generator Society” because they relied on generators and each other before Bald Head Island had any power.

Their original vision was to “Live in harmony with nature.” This tenet included protection of BHI from overdevelopment, carefully balancing the delicate ecosystems of a barrier island with people, ensuring the stability and safety of wildlife and their habitats and build-out guidelines that do no harm to the island. Born from their foresight, Bald Head Association has continued to lead this charge since 1982. BHA works hard to preserve and minimally impact what so many people love about BHI — the natural beauty of its beaches, creeks, marsh and maritime forest — allowing the kid in all of us to come out to play (in keeping with BHI’s ageless appeal), not only for today but for generations to come.
