30 WAYS TO
PASS THE (TURTLE) TIME Bald Head Islanders may refer to the laid-back pace here as “turtle time,” but that doesn’t mean it’s not a happening place. There are countless ways to make the most of every day. Check out our list of ideas to jumpstart your itinerary.
AC TIVITIES GUIDE

LAY OF THE LAND
Without a bridge tying it to the mainland, the island is left footloose and car-free. Here’s how to take to the open road. | NO. 1 |
GET IT IN GEAR
The most popular modes of transportation on Bald Head Island are the electric golf cart and bicycle. Whenever possible, opt for two wheels or your own two feet to best soak up the surroundings. Coastal Urge and Riverside Adventure Co. rent bikes by the day and by the week.
NO. 2
NO. 4
FIND
“ Tippy” Grab a map from Riverside Adventure and round up the entire family for the “Where’s Tippy?” photo scavenger hunt that takes you all over the island and rewards you with a prize.
Blaze a Trail!
SUMMON SPIRITS
| NO.5 | For a cheeky take on the island’s
haunted history, sign up for a family-friendly Ghost Walk offered by Riverside Adventure Co.’s entertaining scalawags during summer evenings. If you’re lucky, you may get to meet the enchanting spirit of Theodosia Burr Alston, whose ship mysteriously disappeared off the coast of Bald Head Island in 1812.
Along Federal Road several trailheads enter the Bald Head Woods Preserve, a nearly 200-acre area of undisturbed maritime forest. Just off Federal Road, the M. Kent Mitchell Nature Trail rewards hikers with spectacular views of the creek and close encounters with fiddler crabs and wading birds when the tide is low.
NO. 3
WALK IT OUT
The Conservancy holds seasonal nightly Turtle Walks for members, which start at the Barrier Island Study Center and then move to the beach for a little lesson in ecology. If the timing is right, your group will head off to watch a turtle dig her nest and lay her eggs while Conservancy naturalists collect information. Later in the season, you may get to see a nest “boil” and hatch.
NO. 6
TRAVEL BACK IN TIME
For a deep dive into the island’s past, take a guided historic tour from the Old Baldy Foundation and hear about brushes with pirates, the trio of lighthouses that have graced the island, and the brave lifesaving servicemen who once did duty at Cape Fear Station. You’ll cover lots of ground in an oversized golf cart, with numerous stops along the way to stretch your legs. ACTIVITIES GUIDE
haven 29
WANDERLUST
When you want to discover the island’s flora and fauna, or even the great beyond, look no further than the Bald Head Island Conservancy.
Patrol the Shore
NO. 7
Join the Bald Head Island Conservancy staff on their summer evening patrols with the Sea Turtle Ride Along, watch for turtle tracks leading from the waves to the dunes, and call back to base with your findings. If you’re in the right place at the right time, you could see a loggerhead turtle lay her eggs or witness a nest hatch.
LIGHT UP THE NIGHT
NO. 9
NO. 10
The Conservancy’s Bald Head After Dark event introduces the nocturnal creatures of the island, including frogs, bats, alligators and bioluminescent plankton. After a brief presentation, you’ll join a naturalist on a flashlight-led walk to see what nighttime critters you can spot.
SPREAD YOUR WINGS
Every season of the year, Bald Head Island is home to an impressive array of birds—some 244 species in total—and the Conservancy staff members know them by sight and song. Join a Birding Expedition to see how many you can find. As a part of the tour, you’ll get a rare opportunity to visit the Ibis Pond on Middle Island, a private sanctuary where our feathered friends congregate.
NO. 8
EXPLORE THE OUTDOORS
The Bald Head Island Conservancy is known for their experiential summer camps for kids 4-14. While preschoolers catch bugs and make crafts, elementary schoolers get in kayaks and go crabbing and shell collecting. Middle schoolers become citizen scientists by collecting data, helping with research, planting dune grasses and more.
NO. 11
CAST AWAY
To truly live like a local, join the Conservancy for a quick primer on crabbing and cast netting. In just a couple hours’ time, you’ll be catching any number of baitfish and blue crabs in the water around the Village Creek Access.
NO. 12
The island’s minimal light pollution provides for a breathtaking view of constellations and planets. Connect with the Conservancy’s Cocoa & Cosmos program to learn how to use sky charts and new technology to enhance your stargazing experience. Bonus—hot cocoa is served.

A SHORE THING
Uninterrupted shoreline wraps Bald Head Island on every side, allowing endless room to roam. | NO. 13 |
COMMUNE WITH THE CREEK
Through the Bald Head Island Conservancy, you can take guided kayak or canoe tours with an expert naturalist. Expect to see egrets, ibises, herons, kingfishers, ospreys, bald eagles, and maybe even a dolphin or alligator on your tour. At the Sail Shop, they offer guided trips along Bald Head Creek and Fishing Creek in single and double kayaks. These 90-minute tours are packed with history, stories and wildlife identification, but if you’d rather go out on your own, the Sail Shop can provide you with a kayak or canoe, life jacket and paddle, and send you on your way.
NO. 15
WALK ON WATER
Take a standup paddleboard (SUP) lesson or tour with Coastal Urge for a novel way to explore the island’s waters. Book online first, then stop by the Board Room on Keelson Row in Harbour Village for rentals, excursions and instruction. They'll have you walking on water in no time.
NO. 16
Set Sail!
LAND A
See another side of the island when you go sailing with the Sail Shop. Their 26’ J80 sailboat, Jive, is perfect for a relaxing sail out on the Atlantic or along the inland waters of the Cape Fear River. If you’re interested, you can take sailing lessons on the J80, too.

Ride the Wave
When you travel to the island, bring along your favorite longboard or shortboard for testing out the surf. Or, better yet, pack light and rent a board from the Sail Shop. If you’re new to surfing, the Sail Shop offers group and private lessons. The locals tend to congregate around Access 42, located along East Beach, as soon as the sun comes up.
MAKE A SPLASH
Swim, flip, frolic, dive and play in the waves to your heart’s content. Along with swimming, 14 miles of beaches offer a backdrop for building sandcastles, collecting shells or just getting a good dose of vitamin D. South Beach’s long stretch of sand is ideal for strolling and shelling. Along West Beach near Harbour Village, you’ll find kids wading in the shallow surf. Out on East Beach, the waves are bigger and the surfers and boogie boarders love the action.
NO. 18
red drum, bluefish, mullet, pompano and Spanish mackerel. Trout, red drum, spots and flounder inhabit the creeks here, and whether you’re fishing from a dock, boat or kayak, you stand a chance of landing a beauty. If you decide to head offshore, your guide can pick you up in Harbour Village and put you on tuna, grouper, mackerel, mahi-mahi, tarpon and marlin in the Gulf Stream. Most guides provide licenses and equipment, but if you’re fishing from shore, be sure to have a valid North Carolina fishing license on you.

Kids don’t take a back seat to grownups at the Bald Head Island Club or the Shoals Club. The BHI Club offers a robust summer camp program, including golf, tennis and swimming instruction; arts and crafts; games; and plenty of aquatic activities. The Shoals Club has a full calendar of programs for kids, too, headed up by their mascot Gulliver, a seagull who’s flown in and made the island home. Don all-white clothing and give it a go on the immaculate croquet greenswards where the Bald Head Island Croquet Club plays, practices and holds international championships. From June to September they host Family Croquet, relaxed gatherings where you can learn how the game is played.
Don’t leave the island without playing a round or two on the Bald Head Island Club’s stunning golf course. The 18-hole beauty winds its way along the Atlantic Ocean and through the maritime forest, providing scenic views at every turn. If your game’s a little rusty, head to the range where you can warm up, take a lesson from a PGA pro, or join a clinic and perfect your swing.
When you’re ready to cool off, the BHI Club’s amazing new aquatics complex will take warm weather fun to a whole new level. Opening in spring of 2019, the facility includes an Olympic lap pool, leisure pool and zeroentry pool. The younger set will enjoy the giggle-inducing splash pad, slide tower, waterslides and seaside playground, while adults get their day in the sun with a cabana bar and casual oceanview restaurant.

ESCAPE TO THE CAPE
The oceanfront Shoals Club, which overlooks the Point of Cape Fear, offers a spacious swimming pool, along with a separate baby pool for tykes. Pool-goers enjoy sunning on the ample decks and showering off in the convenient locker rooms. When you’re ready for a change of pace, round up the family for a little friendly competition on the nearby volleyball or bocce ball courts. Direct access to the cape is also a perk for members and temporary members of the Shoals Club. Just grab a towel, chair and umbrella provided by the attentive staff, and hit the beach. 34

LIFE ON BALD HEAD ISLAND IS RELAXED, UNSTRUCTURED AND FILLED WITH A SENSE OF JOYFUL ABANDON. SHOULDN’T A SECOND HOME HERE FEEL THE SAME?
ith demanding careers and two active daughters, Cindy and Marty Ferguson describe their life in Cary, N.C., in one word: hectic. “Time at Bald Head Island is always a welcome reprieve,” said Cindy. “Life is just simpler there. We call it an old-fashioned family vacation.” The Fergusons first visited Bald Head Island in 2008 with friends who own a home in Cape Fear Station. “We immediately fell in love with the island and started looking for real estate,” said Cindy. After exploring the various island environments, they chose a site in the Southern Living Inspired Community in Cape Fear Station. “We loved the location near the Shoals Club and thought it would be fun to be near our friends,” said Cindy. “When we found out that another friend, Vicky Serany of Southern Studio Interior Design, was involved with the project, we knew it was meant to be.” Vicky has been foundational in the Southern Living Inspired Community since its inception, as has builder Jeff Sanderson of Whitney Blair Custom Homes. Both say building and decorating a second home, especially one on Bald Head Island, requires a different mindset and choices than a primary residence. “Overall, you want to make it fun and unique,” said Vicky. “This is a place to bring family and friends, to relax and unwind.
Whimsy, color and detail are hugely important, but keeping it low maintenance and comfortable are paramount.” To that end, Vicky chose easy-care, indoor-outdoor fabrics like Sunbrella, and collaborated with Jeff on the cabin-grade white oak flooring that only adds character as it weathers. Wet bathing suits and sandy feet are not a problem if you plan for them, insists Vicky, and nobody wants to be worried about such things when they are on the island for vacation. “Bald Head Island’s environment also requires us to make construction decisions geared toward the climate and being on a barrier island,” added Jeff. “We drill deeper, use windows built to withstand 130-m.p.h. winds, strap the home from the roof to the pilings, and carefully choose every type of material we use.” For example, Jeff said the Fergusons’ entire house is wrapped with James Hardy fiber cement material, and the roof is 100% aluminum to resist salt spray and stand up to the environment. Cindy describes the process of building their home as a wonderful collaboration among all involved. “We ended up with a design that is perfect for our family,” she said. “It’s still a ‘pinch me’ moment every time we go.” For the Fergusons, their second home on Bald Head Island might be best summed up in two words: family first.

THE MORE, THE MERRIER. A comfortable and ample sectional was a must for the great room, as it’s the main gathering space for family and friends. It’s also the home’s main entry, setting up the layering of blues on blues—a cool, calming color scheme that is carried throughout the house.

HAVE A SEAT. WHILE UNDENIABLY ELEGANT, THE DINING AREA IS COMPLETELY PRACTICAL. THE INDOOROUTDOOR FABRICS ARE NEARLY INDESTRUCTIBLE, SO THERE’S NO FUSS OVER SPILLS AND WET BATHING SUITS AT THE DINNER TABLE.
A KITCHEN OF EXQUISITE TASTE. The soft sea glass backsplash blends seamlessly with the cabinets, complemented by the island’s barstools in stunning turquoise. The light fixtures are a trio of painted wood chimes, adding a natural element and artistic flair. At the end of the island, a beverage refrigerator adds grab-and-go convenience.
OH TO BE A KID AGAIN! The Ferguson children have free rein on the third floor, a space filled with whimsy and wonder. On opposite ends of the common area are identical bunkrooms reminiscent of the design efficiency typically found on custom yachts. Both contain two built-in beds, each with their own TV, cubbies and charging stations.

THE STUFF OF DREAMS. Soft and serene, the sea foam green of the solid mahogany king-sized bed with hand-carved posts defines the master bedroom’s relaxed coastal vibe. In an upstairs bath, a rich, distinguished gray on the cabinets is echoed throughout the home, as are the countertops of easy-maintenance quartz that looks like marble.

t is often said there’s an art to living well. For the Weaver family, the very best of times happen one week every summer when 21 of them gather on Bald Head Island to relax, reconnect and enjoy the island’s simple pleasures. Like most families who come here, the three generations play on the beach, ride bikes just about everywhere and climb to the top of Old Baldy, the island’s iconic 200-year-old lighthouse. They play games together, go out for ice cream and check in frequently at the alligator pond. The Weaver grandchildren, however, gain more than lifelong memories from their reunions. They also come away with inspired
works of art they created under the tutelage of their grandmother, Prudy Weaver, an accomplished artist whose work is showcased throughout the region, including extensively on Bald Head Island. DRAWING ON FAMILY TIES Prudy, or Nana as her grandchildren call her, started family art camp in 2013, the year Old Baldy Foundation sponsored a children’s art contest featuring interpretations of the lighthouse. “The grandchildren participated in the contest, and art camp just evolved from there,” Prudy said. Typically on Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday mornings of their haven 69
reunion week, Prudy and the grandchildren, who range in age from 10 to 18, work on a designated project in the screened-in porch under the Weavers’ Lighthouse Landing home. When they moved in, Prudy and her husband Lee found a sign reading “The Twilight Lounge” that was left by the previous owners, and the children quickly adopted that name for their space. Furnished with two picnic tables, the area functions as the children’s makeshift studio, as well as an overflow dining area. Also part of the tradition, Prudy takes her six grandsons to lunch after the first day of camp and her five granddaughters out on the second day. “I like it because there are no boys and we get to have special girl time with Nana,” said 10-year-old Caroline, the youngest grandchild. On Fridays, in celebration of their week together, the young artists showcase their work in a family art show and present a video the children (spearheaded by the granddaughters) have filmed on their phones, edited on iMovie and put to music. In the past, they have staged talent shows at the end of the week, charging their parents admission and donating the money to the Bald Head Island Conservancy. “I really like art camp,” said Noah, 18, the oldest grandchild. “Our Nana is very knowledgeable and we enjoy

FINDING HER TRUE COLORS Prudy and her husband Lee raised their
four sons in Matthews, N.C., where Lee is an attorney. For 17 years, Prudy owned a
decorating store, after which she got her real estate license and then her general
contractor’s license. She built houses for three years, stopping to care for her
mother full time when she became ill.
When Prudy moved her mother to
Charlotte, she looked for things they could do together that weren’t too strenuous
and signed them up for a watercolor class at the local community college. After
her mother was admitted to the hospital, Prudy said she brought her art supplies and camped out in her mother’s room.
“Hospitals are so stressful, and painting
is meditative and peaceful,” she said. “I was doing it
for therapeutic reasons, but then people
started asking if they could
buy my work.”
In 2000,
Prudy painted a watercolor of Renfrow

We all get the same assignment, but we each express our own personality through the art we create.” Painting subjects have ranged from the lighthouse to turtles to birds, and other projects have included papier-mâché masks and each child writing, illustrating and performing a story. For the July 14-21, 2018 camp, the kids outlined their profiles and filled them in with illustrations of the things
they love about Bald Head Island. “It was really interesting because we got to think back on all the years we have come to the island and all the memories we’ve made here,” said Isabella, 13, whose family lives in Sonoma County, California. They are the only West Coast residents in the family; the other cousins live in North Carolina and Virginia. “Every year the project just keeps

said. “To my surprise, they sold out in less than three months.” That piece launched her new career as a full-time artist.
Prudy said two of her sons showed
exceptional artistic ability growing up and she often wondered where
they got their talent. “I had no idea,”
she said. “I can’t tell you how amazing it is that I’m doing this now.”
Prudy said her sons are all busy in
their careers and raising their children, but she added, “Who knows? Maybe they will be like me and take up art later in life.”

Creativity is so present in the room, whether we’re doing art or not, and it just gives us another outlet to freely express ourselves.” INSPIRED BY NATURE’S PALETTE For several years, the kids have also organized a trash cleanup, stretching from the Weavers’ home on the marsh all the way to the Bald Head Island Conservancy campus. “My grandkids really get what Bald Head is all about,” said Prudy. “They’ve been coming here their whole lives and would rather be here than anywhere else. They love how natural it is, and enjoy riding bikes freely, all over the island. It’s like it used to be when I was a kid.” Noah is now a freshman at North Carolina State University where he is considering environmental science as a major. “That interest is 100% influenced by the time I have spent on Bald Head 76
Island,” he said. “Bald Head represents a different way of life. It’s simpler, with the focus on spending time with family and in nature.” “At Bald Head, we go out and look for sea turtles every summer,” added Isabella. “That is a really fun time with my cousins. Now that we’re older, our parents let us go out to search for turtles by ourselves at night. We did that this summer and had such a fun time.” Prudy said watching the cousins interact is so gratifying. “Those 11 grandchildren get along so beautifully and look forward to being together so much,” she said. “I love it, and so do they.” Susannah summed up art camp, as well as their time together, by giving credit to the one who inspired it. “My Nana is one of the most creative and selfless people I know,” she said. “I feel so blessed to have her as a mentor, teacher and role model.” Suffice it to say, this is one family that seems to have mastered art appreciation, including for the art of living well.
Jennifer Van Ness:
BRINGING AN OWNER’S PERSPECTIVE TO SERVING YOU
Jennifer Van Ness has always felt that one of the greatest gifts she, and her husband Jim, ever gave their children is Bald Head Island. Jennifer enjoys sharing the gift of Bald Head with others and helping them with all of their island real estate needs. When she’s not at our office in the marina, you can find Jennifer running the wynds of Bald Head, playing tennis at the Bald Head Island Club, out on the water with Jim and their children Ashton and Hank, or enjoying the beach with her dog Oliver.
“Jennifer is without a doubt the best realtor we have ever had. We have been coming to Bald Head Island for many years and had always dreamed of buying a home here. We began the process by merely asking for information on a listing online. She responded immediately. I am not sure I have ever encountered anyone who has better follow-up skills than Jennifer. We ultimately purchased a home and had the easiest and smoothest closing we have ever experienced because of her efforts. We cannot more emphatically endorse Jennifer.” - Susan & Jeff Sampson, Louisville, KY

Bald Head Island has seen many important dates in its long and colorful history, but few have had the lasting impact of June 14, 1983, when the George P. Mitchell Family purchased the island’s unsold land and made a commitment to responsible and sustainable development. Many critical decisions were made in those first few years—to abandon an earlier developer’s plans to build a second golf course on the island, but instead dedicate 200 acres of maritime forest as a preserve; to build no bridge to the island, but instead rely on ferry access and golf carts as the primary modes of transportation; and to buck the high-rise building trend overtaking coastal towns, but instead pursue a sensitive land plan that respected the island’s natural environment. Further, the Mitchell Family would donate land and funds to help establish the Bald Head Island Conservancy and Old Baldy Foundation, caretakers of the island’s ecology and history.
1916 Brunswick County forecloses on the Walker heirs. Tax lien is purchased by Thomas Frank Boyd.
1963 With a bid of $133,000 Sherrill buys the two lighthouse sites, and the island complex is under one owner for the first time since 1789.
1924 T. F. Boyd builds Pavilion pier and hotel on BHI’s southwest bank and promotes sales of homesites on “Palmetto Island.”
1898
Carolina Cape Fear Corp. begins construction of Bald Head Inn on South Beach and the island’s 18-hole golf course, and applies for permit to construct a 10-acre marina. Major marshlands, six miles of Atlantic eastern shoreline and Bluff, Battery and Striking Islands are all deeded to the State of North Carolina.

1882 Cape Fear Life Saving Station is built on East Beach approximately one mile above the point of Cape Fear. On April 10, 1882, Dunbar Davis, the first keeper assigned to the station, and his six-man crew successfully rescued all aboard the schooner Minnie, marking the station’s initiation into service.
1937 At second courthouse sale, Allen C. Ewing is the high bidder. Frank O. Sherrill purchases Smith Island from Ewing for $45,000.
1970 Carolina Cape Fear Corp. purchases Smith Island from Sherrill for $5.5 million.
1917 Thomas Frank Boyd pays $45,000 to Thomas W. Davis, commissioner for James Alvis Walker, and acquires title to all of Smith Island except the two lighthouse sites and the “Federal Road.”
1974 Marina permit application is approved by State of North Carolina and Federal Corps of Engineers.
1914 U.S. Coast Guard Station on South Beach replaces Cape Fear Life Saving Station on East Beach.
1903 Cape Fear Lighthouse and Captain Charlie’s Station are constructed on East Beach, approximately one mile north of the point of Cape Fear.

All great dives typically have a few things going for them: tasty food, colorful atmosphere and a good back story. MoJo’s on the Harbor, fronting the Bald Head Island Marina, delivers on all counts. Owned and run by John and
Andrea Pitera, the vibe here is all about letting your hair down. The bar scene is lively year ‘round, with its large screen TVs and dollar bills taped to the rafters (refer to aforementioned back story). When the weather’s balmy, ask
to be seated on the open deck, or better yet, upstairs on the second-story screened porch. Along with dramatic
water views, you’ll be treated to an eclectic mix of seafood specialties. Summertime even brings sushi and sashimi
presented by a master chef. For a hearty change of pace, order one of John’s secret family pasta recipes. Time it right, and you can enjoy live music, or if the crowd is lingering late, karaoke. Next door to MoJo’s, the Piteras’ other venture, Honey’s BBQ, specializes in pulled

pork, brisket and slow-cooked ribs, smoked overnight until they’re fall-off-thebone tender. Dine outside at picnic tables or grab your meal to go. For big orders, be sure to call ahead.
Just down the street, Delphina Cantina serves up fresh Latin-inspired
dishes prepared by Executive Chef Carlos Rojas and his talented kitchen staff. Born in Veracruz, Mexico, Carlos spent his childhood watching his grandmother
cook meals in an outdoor brick oven over an open fire, and he carries on her
passion for sharing food made with love. Delphina’s most popular menu items
include fish tacos made with blackened tuna, cucumber and wasabi slaw, avocado and cilantro; chicken enchiladas verdes topped with crema fresca;
and sizzling steak fajitas, a frequent chef’s special. In the summer months, you’ll want to visit the restaurant’s nearby Luna Forest, an outdoor patio with a warm
atmosphere and cold drinks. The classic mojito or sangria never disappoint, but if you’re feeling more adventurous, ask for the jalapeño margarita for a
spicy twist on an old favorite. While ordering at the bar, be sure to check out the portrait of namesake Luna, the late great island dog owned by proprietors
Harper Peterson and Plunkett Dodge. Follow the smell of coffee and waffle
cones around the corner and you’ll find Sandpiper Ice Cream & Coffee. Early risers show up at 7:30 a.m. for its premium java, while late night visitors stand in
line for homemade ice cream and handspun milkshakes. Always worth the wait!
In the warmer months, enjoy beer and wine while you watch the boats
come and go at Will o’ the Wisp, an outdoor venue just around the corner from MoJo’s beside the Sail Shop. A call to Marina Pizza (operating out of
Delphina’s kitchen) gets you dinner delivered. Or simply order popcorn and nuts to accompany that Pinot or IPA.
A quick cart ride down Federal Road and a couple of sharp turns brings
you to the Maritime Market Café, where you’ll find a salad bar, pizza by the
slice, and an array of gourmet sandwiches, wraps and burgers. If you plan to get an early start, the café is tops for breakfast. Along with everyday offerings
like pancakes and biscuits, you’ll want to try the chef’s daily specials, which could be Nutella-stuffed French toast, a Belgian waffle or savory crab and eggs Benedict. Owner Claude Pope is the consummate host, putting on exquisite
wine dinners at the café on occasion, along with lavish oyster roasts under the
adjacent Forest Pavilion, prepared by classically trained Chef Marc Berruet. Don’t miss the chance to watch the sun go down and the full moon come up
with Pope and a few hundred of his closest friends at a monthly Howl at the
Moon party, typically held at Beach Access 39. Everyone is invited—just BYOB and an appetizer to share.
For a grab-and-go lunch or snack where shirt and shoes are optional, pop
over to Mike’s Bites, located in a small brick building near the foundation of
the Cape Fear Light. Along with fresh sandwiches and hot dogs, they serve a nice variety of Italian ice flavors and popsicles.

A full or temporary membership (available through your rental company) opens the door to
four different dining venues at the Shoals Club, overlooking the Cape Fear Point. The most casual is the bathing suit-friendly Sandbar Grille, located poolside. The menu includes
Caribbean, Asian, Southwest and local influences that focus on light, fresh ingredients. Recent favorites include the citrus fried crab cake with cilantro and avocado cream. For less adventurous palates, chicken tenders and burgers are always available, too.
Overlooking the Shoals Club’s pool on a series of cascading oceanview terraces, you'll
find The Verandahs, an outdoor seating area with a more refined atmosphere than the Sandbar Grille. Gourmet sandwiches like the salmon BLT with Atlantic salmon, bacon aioli, green tomato chow chow and bibb lettuce on a sprouted grain bun tempt you at
every turn, along with creatively composed artisan salads. Both lunch and dinner service are offered seasonally.
Watch the sun go down over the ocean while you dine al fresco or in the lounge
at Latitudes Wine Bar at the Shoals Club. Inspired small plates like seared sea scallops with saffron aioli, pickled fennel, jalapeño and sweet corn or ahi tuna with sweet and sour slaw, crispy wonton and wasabi aioli will make you want to return. Oftentimes an acoustic
guitarist lends additional atmosphere to the scene. Make sure you make reservations to dine at AQUA, the Shoals Club’s premier dining venue. Seafood lovers will appreciate
the restaurant’s superb locally sourced fish and shellfish. Executive Chef Caitlyn Fisher
relies heavily on local vegetables and cheeses, too, so the menu changes with the seasons. Recently appearing on the menu was a delicate local grouper, crab, chayote
and watercress salad, garnished with orange. If you don’t enjoy seafood, a beautifully prepared beef filet or N.Y. strip typically appears on the menu, along with creative options
for vegetarians. Save room for dessert, too. Their caramel panna cotta is a house favorite.
Located along South Beach, the Bald Head Island Club offers four dining options
for members and temporary members. Opening in the spring of 2019, the spectacular new poolside Horizons restaurant will offer incredible ocean views and a Caribbean-
inspired menu from their second-level dining room. Their poolside first-level snack bar
serves up kid-friendly sandwiches, chicken fingers and burgers, along with fried seafood baskets and lighter salads. Call ahead to verify hours.
The Palms and The Terrace at the Club provide a pub-style indoor atmosphere
and al fresco dining respectively, with the convenience of open seating—no reservations required for lunch or dinner. Whether seated inside or outside, you’ll enjoy the views of
the croquet greensward and golf holes 10 and 18. Steak lovers will appreciate the variety
of cuts offered here, along with gourmet burgers. Seafood is always on the menu, too, with salmon especially popular. Stop by the not-to-be-missed Sunday brunch buffet at The Palms for a perfect start to your day.
The Club’s chef brings a decidedly more upscale approach to The Grille, which
offers a range of seafood, beef, pork and poultry dishes for lunch and dinner. Order
a dozen or two East Coast oysters for the table while you debate which entrée to try. The “From the Sea” section of The Grille menu offers a range of locally and regionally sourced fish and shellfish options. The beautifully presented sesame seared ahi tuna
bites with seaweed salad, citrus ponzu, mango puree, wasabi and pickled ginger marries unexpected flavors to great effect. The prime filet mignon is always cooked perfectly to order, while vegetarians and non-vegetarians alike will devour the stuffed Portobello
mushroom with shaved garlic, balsamic glazed Brussels sprouts, shallots and smoked gouda. Yum!

e r u t a y n o n w h i t m r a h in Bald Head Association (BHA)
I
n the mid-1970s, the five original homeowners, along with property owners in the process of building, met and agreed that a property owners’ association was needed to create and uphold restrictions for the
preservation, maintenance and thoughtful development of Bald Head Island. They called themselves “The Generator Society” because they relied on generators and each other before Bald Head Island had any power.
Their original vision was to “Live in harmony with nature.” This tenet included protection of BHI from overdevelopment, carefully balancing the delicate ecosystems of a barrier island with people, ensuring the stability and safety of wildlife and their habitats and build-out guidelines that do no harm to the island. Born from their foresight, Bald Head Association has continued to lead this charge since 1982. BHA works hard to preserve and minimally impact what so many people love about BHI — the natural beauty of its beaches, creeks, marsh and maritime forest — allowing the kid in all of us to come out to play (in keeping with BHI’s ageless appeal), not only for today but for generations to come. On BHI, you choose your social connection experience — from solitude to community gatherings. You choose your recreational experience — from walking, jogging, biking to kayaking, surfing, fishing and more. From the ocean to the creeks and all in between, the Bald Head Island experience is what you make it. BHA helps create shared community experiences — from potluck dinners and book clubs to yoga, Pilates and knitting.
Warning: conversation and story swapping can lead to
instant and lasting friendships.
If you own property on Bald Head Island, BHA can help you navigate the design guidelines of owning, remodeling or constructing a residence and maintaining your landscaping — to preserve the island for all — on a barrier island, in keeping with the original “living in harmony with nature” tenet.
Through BHA, its members help control the destiny of Bald Head Island. We work for our property owners. With ongoing feedback, we can serve you better!
Keep up-to-date!

FOND FAREWELL. BUILT IN 1915 AS A SIMPLE WOODEN STRUCTURE FOR TRANSPORTING SUPPLIES FROM CREEK TO SHORE, THE OLD BOAT HOUSE’S STURDY RECTANGULAR FRAME AND GABLE ROOF WERE A STRAIGHTFORWARD EXPRESSION OF THE ELEMENTAL LIVES OF LIGHTHOUSE KEEPERS, COAST GUARDSMEN AND THE MARITIME ENVIRONMENT THAT SHAPED THEM. AFTER STANDING SENTINEL FOR MORE THAN A CENTURY, THIS CULTURAL AND HISTORICAL LANDMARK FINALLY YIELDED TO NATURE THE MORNING OF SEPTEMBER 14, 2018, WHEN HURRICANE FLORENCE PASSED OVER BALD HEAD ISLAND.
