On Bald Head Island.
We do things a little differently on Bald Head Island. Make plans to leave your car, as well as your cares, on the mainland, and discover a place that’s as novel as its name.
10
You won’t find a bridge connecting this barrier island to the mainland. Instead, you’ll arrive by passenger ferry, enjoying panoramic views of the Cape Fear River and Intracoastal Waterway along the way. The 20-minute ferry ride sets the stage for your all-important transition to “island time.”
12
No Bridge.
haven 13
14
You’ll get off the beaten path and travel the island by golf cart, bike or on foot. Nature is the star of the show here, with 14 miles of pristine beach, an expansive tidal creek, and a lush maritime forest just waiting to be explored. Towering over it all is the island’s only high-rise, Old Baldy Lighthouse, built in 1817.
No Cars.
No Worries.
16
Authentic experiences and reconnecting with friends and family take priority here—whether that means poking around the island’s every nook and cranny, or simply finding a quiet spot to unwind and enjoy the beauty of the surroundings. When you take time to slow down, perfect moments have a way of appearing, one right after the other.

BALD HEAD ISLAND We know your time on Bald Head Island is precious and you want to squeeze every little drop from it. The island is rife with opportunities for adventure, from jumping in a kayak to learning our fascinating history to searching our spectacular beaches for shells. So how do you plan your time? Check out these tips to getting the most out of your BHI vacation.
Activity Planner
Get Swept Up in Marsh Madness Sure, Bald Head has amazing beaches, but if you haven’t explored the marsh and creek environment, you’re missing out. The creeks here are easily accessed by kayak and canoe, and experienced naturalists and expert guides can show you the ropes.
u
The Bald Head Island Conservancy offers guided kayak and canoe tours for individuals and small groups. These are perfect for any age or skill level and the Conservancy’s expert naturalists can help identify all of the flora and fauna you see (and trust us, you’ll see a lot).
u
The Sail Shop’s guides know their way through the creeks and can help beginner kayakers get started. Self-guided tours are also available. Some of their most popular tours are at sunset or under a rising full moon.
p Seek Out Your Perfect Strand of Beach The island’s 14 miles of pristine beaches beg you to build sandcastles, stroll, swim or just chill. But how do you find the perfect spot for you? South Beach features long stretches of sand and calmer water, perfect for walking and shell seeking. West Beach is the most protected, so you’re liable to find kids playing in the surf. East Beach is where the action is—keep an eye out for boogie boarders and surfers here. Need beach equipment? These tips should help make your day at the shore a breeze.
u
If you have a Shoals Club membership, use their beach access and pick up a towel, umbrella and chair on your way to the beach.
u
Riverside Adventure Company rents beach gear, such as umbrellas, chairs and games (bocce ball, anyone?). Island Hardware also rents chairs and umbrellas.
u
Families with kids will appreciate Beach & Baby Equipment Rental. They offer beach carts, chairs and tents, among other items.
Walk on the Wild(life) Side Discover Bald Head Island’s “wild” nature and get up close and personal with some of the island’s lesser known residents and visitors. On any given day you can expect to see birds, marine life, deer and fox. You might even catch a glimpse of an alligator. One of Bald Head’s more elusive visitors is the sea turtle. Though 24
they nest on the shores, spotting one can be difficult. Your best bet is to hook up with the Bald Head Island Conservancy and go on one of their extremely popular Turtle Walks. In the summer months, the Conservancy’s naturalists and educators take visitors in search of a giant loggerhead turtle laying her nest, or later in the season, a nest hatching. Seeing a nesting sea turtle in action or watching a nest boil and release hundreds of baby turtles is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Bal d Head Isl and Activity G uide
Want something a little more challenging? Standup Paddleboarding (SUP) is gaining converts with every trip through the marsh. Paddlers use large boards resembling surfboards and a paddle to maneuver. There’s a learning curve to standing on the board and gaining balance, but it’s fairly quick to master, making this sport popular with all ages and degrees of experience. Coastal Urge is your headquarters for all things SUP on Bald Head Island— rentals, guided excursions and instructional sessions take place at the Board Room, located in the harbor.
26
powered electric bikes, if you want the thrill minus the workout.
u Take a hike. What better way to explore Bald Head Island’s environments than with a hike through the maritime forest or alongside the marsh? The M. Kent Mitchell Nature Trail (off Federal Road) provides nearly 360˚ views of the marsh and creek. The Bald Head Woods Maritime Forest Preserve offers several trailheads along either side of Federal Road ranging from easy to
Own the Ocean Hanging out on the beach is great, but why not add to your repertoire and try some activities that get you in and on the water? It just so happens that the North Carolina coast offers some of the best surfing on the Eastern Seaboard. Bring your board or rent a long or short board from the Sail Shop and hang ten on East Beach. If you’re new to surfing, never fear, the Sail Shop’s Surf Camp provides group and private instruction that will have you “dropping in” on your first lesson. Sailing more your speed? The
Sail Shop offers adult lessons aboard two 26’ J-80 Olympicclass sailboats, Jive and Joyride. The kids will never forget learning to sail on the creek in one of the small Opti Prams. For a more relaxed experience, try a
Fun Sail. An instructor will take you and up to four others for a two-hour tour of the Cape Fear River and along South Beach for views of the island seen by few other visitors.
Embrace Your Inner Explorer
moderate. Be sure to check out the Timmons Oak, one of the largest live oaks on the island. If you’re looking for a guided hike, both the Bald Head Island Conservancy and the Sail Shop take groups on short trips or day-long hikes.
u Discover geocaching.
Geocaching, a game where you use a GPS-enabled device to track down a box or “cache” hidden at a set of coordinates, is an awesome way to discover some of the island’s more out-of-the-way spots. Caches
Hit the Links q The gorgeous George Cobb-designed golf course at the Bald Head Island Club winds through the forest, under the eye of Old Baldy, and out onto the dune ridge where a 180˚ view of the ocean greets you for the final holes. The course was recently renovated by Tim Cate, and includes redesigned bunkers, expanded fairways and the widespread use of native plants in the landscaping. Can’t-miss holes include Nos. 6 and 7, where Old Baldy watches over the course, and No. 16, a par-three set high on the dune ridge with sweeping ocean views. Is your swing a little rusty? Don’t worry, an on-site practice facility provides a space to warm up, and PGA professionals on staff can give lessons to youth and adults of all skill levels. Club rentals are also available for a fee.
Bald Head Island is a wild and mysterious place that begs to be explored. Check out these ideas for stepping off the beaten path:
u Go for a bike ride.
Exploring the island’s wynds and ways by bike gives you a whole new perspective. Both Coastal Urge and Riverside Adventure Company rent bikes by the day or for longer. Choose between beach cruisers, fitness bikes, tandem bikes, kids’ bikes (with training wheels available if you need them), trailers and baby joggers. Riverside Adventure Company also rents batteryBald Head Isl and Activity G uide

range in size from film canisters to larger boxes and contain a sign-in sheet and treasures, with a “take one, leave one” policy. You can go to www.geocaching.com, create an account and upload the dozen geocaches hidden on Bald Head Island to your phone. Riverside Adventure Company also offers a GPS Scavenger Hunt that sends you around the island to a preprogrammed series of coordinates.
u Go for a swim in the pool.
At the Shoals Club, a lap pool overlooks a shallow children’s pool and fountain area. Water aerobics, water Zumba and parent/tot swimming lessons are offered here. The Bald Head Island Club’s heated 25-meter pool includes a slide for children 10 and under, a splash pad, showers, shaded poolside seating, towels, an adjacent restaurant, playground and beach volleyball court. Both pools are open from April to October and full or guest membership to the corresponding club is required.
u Try your hand at croquet.
Get Sporty Golf not your game? You can still get your sport on.
u Play a round of tennis. The
four courts here are surfaced with MondoTen, a rubberized coating that’s easy on the joints but doesn’t impact the spin of the ball. During the summer, daily clinics, social activities, private lessons and programs for children three and up are available with one of the United States Professional Tennis Association pros.
The championship croquet greensward (fancy name for croquet court) regularly hosts United States Croquet Association tournaments and is the home greensward of several of the nation’s top players. In 2012 the Solomon Cup World Championship was held here. Don’t let any of this scare you off; croquet at the Bald Head Island Club is open to beginners as well as seasoned veterans. All-white attire is required, although light-colored (tan) attire is permissible for guests. Check with the staff in the Golf Shop for availability, to arrange lessons, sign up for a clinic or to rent equipment.
Don’t Forget About the Kiddos u Kids love Bald Head Island, and why wouldn’t they, with so much to do, see and explore? The Bald Head Island Conservancy’s camps cater to kids 4-14. Preschoolers catch bugs and make crafts; elementary school aged kids go kayaking, crabbing and shell collecting; and middle school aged youth get involved with the Conservancy’s efforts to protect the island, collecting data and analyzing it to help further the Conservancy’s research. The Shoals Club Recreation Department offers a variety of family-friendly activities throughout the season, including “divein” movies, games around the pool, tie-dyeing T-shirts and story time for the little ones. The Bald Head Island Club’s summer camp program for children 5-12 includes weekly golf and tennis instruction, daily swimming, arts and crafts, indoor and outdoor games, team activities, movies and field trips. The Club also offers Junior Golf Camps and Junior Tennis Programs throughout the summer. All About Art’s programs are suitable for kids of all ages, including a half-day art camp. Mermaid and dragon painting classes are ideal for older children, while “precious impressionists” is geared toward younger kids. Private classes are also available. Riverside Adventure Company is home to the popular Children’s Treasure Hunt, which takes kids ages 5-12 aboard the “pirate ship Lunasea” as they solve riddles, sing songs and use science and nature to piece together a map that leads to buried treasure. The Sunset Celebration, also from the folks at Riverside Adventure, happens in the harbor every Monday evening during the summer. Festivities start at Riverside’s headquarters with a DJ, pirate ship rides, puppet show and games, then move to Beach Access #5 to enjoy a fire for making s’mores, storytelling, a drum circle, and of course, a beautiful BHI sunset.

THE SUN BEGINS TO SLIP BEHIND THE HORIZON ON WEST BEACH, scratching orange and gold on the mid-summer sky. A pack of kids runs, laughing, through the waves, chasing a delighted dog. Two young couples relax on a picnic blanket sharing stories and snacking on cheese and crackers, all while keeping an eye on the antics unfolding around them. It’s the kind of night where the air is electrically charged with the sheer joy of summer. There’s nothing particularly unusual about this scene. It unfolds daily up and down the beaches of Bald Head Island all summer long. But with one big difference: where typically this scene is played out by visitors, giddy with the freedom summer vacation brings, tonight the stars of the show are all full-time islanders. Meet the Riegert and Whitman families, year-round Bald Head Island residents who are taking the road less traveled. They’re raising their kids on this quiet island where six-seater golf carts replace minivans and there’s no such thing as waiting in the drop-off line at school. And they wouldn’t have it any other way.

hen John and Sandi Riegert decided to move from busy Baltimore to quiet Bald Head Island with their two young sons, they knew it wasn’t going to be easy. Aside from uprooting from family and friends and all that was familiar to them, the move would also mean living in a smaller house, forgoing regular trips to the mall and the movie theater, and homeschooling for the boys. “Our families thought we had lost our minds!” says Sandi. “Who raises their kids on an island?” But this was a change John and Sandi had been contemplating for a while. As working parents, they felt too much of their time was spent shuffling the boys from school to sports and back again. Weekends were a blur of birthday parties, errands and slogging through homework. “We weren’t living our lives so much as getting through the mundane, waiting for our ‘real lives’ to begin,” says Sandi. It became clear that it was time for them to make a major change. The Riegerts had bought a home on Bald Head Island back in 2008, figuring they’d retire here “someday” and use it as a vacation home in the meantime. Their visits to Bald Head were sweet, and with each vacation they found themselves more and more reluctant to go “home.”

“WE’RE HERE FOR THE LONG HAUL,” SAYS SANDI. “OUR LIFE HERE IS NOT CONVENTIONAL, BUT THAT’S WHAT WE LOVE SO MUCH ABOUT IT.” Not long after purchasing the BHI home, they sold their 1860s farmhouse in Maryland. The plan was to move to a newer house in the Baltimore area, but the more they looked, the more frustrated they became. Then John threw out a crazy idea. “Why wait until retirement? What if we move to Bald Head now?” As John’s “crazy idea” sunk in, the Riegerts began to see how this remote possibility could become a reality. Sure, there were challenges they’d need to work through. John would continue to work in Baltimore, requiring a seven-hour commute to the island on Thursday evenings and back again on Sunday afternoon. Sandi, a former teacher, would quit her job as a journalist and homeschool the boys. They decided to give it a year and if anyone was unhappy they could always move back. Fast-forward four years, and the Riegerts have no regrets. “We’re here for the long haul,” says Sandi. “Our life here is not conventional, but that’s what we love so much about it.” Their modest home on BHI is cozy compared to the 4,000 square-feet they had in Maryland. But this is by design. “We’ve got just the necessities here,” says Sandi. “We’ve done away with all the
excess, and that’s a very freeing feeling.” Their weekly schedule is both structured and flexible. Monday through Thursday mornings are spent doing schoolwork, usually around the dining room table, though Sandi and the boys take full advantage of the island’s resources to get in some hands-on learning. “Science class” is often held at the Bald Head Island Conservancy, where Drew, 14, and Blake, 10, have the opportunity to dissect sea creatures and learn about the island’s ecosystem. Afternoons are spent in “gym class,” which translates as playing tennis, golf or swimming. Fridays and weekends are reserved for family time. The Riegerts have been happily surprised by the diverse opportunities they’ve found on the island. They’ve taken yoga classes at the Bald Head Association Building and learned to surf. They’ve adopted a turtle nest and seen it hatch. Blake sings with the kids’ choir, run by another full-time islander. Both boys have become proficient at tennis. “I hope that by living this unconventional life, my children learn to follow their dreams, to never be afraid of the road less traveled, to forge their own path,” says Sandi. haven 61

he 5 p.m. ferry glides into the Bald Head Island Marina and the Whitman kids can barely contain their glee. Jack, 10, Raine, 7, and Henry, 3, stand on tiptoes, clamoring for a view of the approaching boat. They quietly chant, “Dad-dee! Dad-dee!” as they wait for their dad to step off the boat and start their weekend together. Dad Keith barely makes it out of the docking area before Henry is in his arms and the two older kids have each grabbed hold of a leg. After a few minutes of welcome home hugs and kisses, they start making plans. “Let’s go surfing!” “I want to show you my golf swing!” Keith smiles and says yes to everything, thrilled to be home. ••• Michelle Whitman found Bald Head Island 13 years ago, when she started dating now-husband Keith. His family had been vacationing on BHI for 20 years and Michelle instantly fell in love. “We started with a week-long vacation, then two,” says Michelle. “Eventually we started asking ourselves ‘could we live here full time?’” They were living in New York with three young kids and longed for a simpler, less hectic life. But much like the Riegerts, they questioned how practical a move to Bald Head Island would be. Michelle and Keith began to do research, hoping to find advice and encouragement from other families who had made a similar decision. Incredibly, after doing a Google search for “living on an island” and “homeschooling,” Michelle landed on an article in Maryland Family magazine, written by none other than Sandi Riegert, about their family’s move to the island. “Keith and I were so encouraged by Sandi’s article,” says Michelle. “It helped cement our decision to make the move.” Sandi and Michelle connected in person after the Whitmans relocated to BHI, and now get together regularly to catch up and compare notes. Like John, Keith commutes to New York during the week for work, returning on Friday afternoons. And like the Riegert boys, Jack and Raine are homeschooled. For Michelle, the resources available on the island make this a much easier and more complete experienced than she had ever imagined. “The folks at the Conservancy put together an amazing science program just for my kids,” explains Michelle. “The opportunities they’ve had there could never be matched in a traditional classroom.” Spearheaded by Kendyll Collins, the Conservancy’s Director of Education, Jack and Raine’s science program consists of twicemonthly classes that feature both a lab and a field component as well as a “take-home” assignment to continue the learning experience with the family. 62
“WE STARTED WITH A WEEK-LONG VACATION, THEN TWO,” SAYS MICHELLE. “EVENTUALLY WE STARTED ASKING OURSELVES ‘COULD WE LIVE HERE FULL TIME?’”

Their very first lesson was about oysters and their contribution to the health of Bald Head Island’s salt marsh system. After getting the basics down and looking at a few specimens in the lab, Kendyll and the kids headed out to the marsh to count the baby oyster shells growing in key spots. “It was low tide, and I taught Jack and Raine how to look for safe spots to step as we trudged through the marsh in the rain,” remembers Kendyll. “Not only were they great sports, the research they conducted that day contributed to the big picture of what we’re doing at the Conservancy.” As for Jack and Raine, they eagerly await each lesson with Kendyll. Whether they’re studying bird life, energy conservation or barrier island weather, they know they’ll be getting into something exciting. And Michelle knows they’ll be having a learning experience unparalleled in a traditional school. Of course, as with anything, living on a ferry-access island has its challenges. For John and Keith, the weekly commute can get tiring, and they miss being with the family during the week. Commute days are long, but both men agree, no matter how long or arduous the day might be, the moment that ferry departs Deep Point, the stress immediately starts to fade. “It can be hard to stop the work mentality and get into relaxation mode at first,” says Keith. “But about halfway to the island, I look up and realize where I am and I’m good.” Sandi misses Starbucks and pizza delivery. “In the winter months I’ll take the kids to Myrtle Beach for a few weeks and the first thing they want to do is order take-out,” she laughs. “For them, it’s this really magical thing that you can get pizza brought to your door.” Drew, who at 14 will start thinking about learning to drive in a few short years, will get much more experience in a golf cart than in a car. “He’ll get his license on the mainland so he can legally drive a cart here,” says Sandi. “A much different experience than his friends back home!” With only 220 full-time residents on the island, it can be challenging for the kids to find playmates. Summertime brings the opportunity to befriend vacationers, whom they keep in touch with over the school year and look forward to seeing again the following summer. And the handful of full-time families with kids are close, forming a network that offers support. At the end of the day, for both families, the challenges are well worth the rewards. “We tell our kids all the time, ‘we are living our dream,’” says Michelle. “We want our kids to know that dreams really can come true.”

Feasting on Bald Head Island Savoring the flavors of a region is an essential part of any good vacation, and now you can take a taste of Bald Head Island home with you with Feasting on Bald Head Island. In this beautifully shot and comprehensive cookbook, author Cheryl Beverage Barnes and photographer-husband Adam V. Barnes take you on a sumptuous culinary journey featuring favorite dishes inspired by the menus of many familiar island restaurants. Below is one of our favorite recipes, which showcases the best of our coastal flavors and is easy to make. Your guests will say thank you!
LINGUINE W ITH CL AMS Serves 4-6 Linguine with Clams is an old-world classic that is magnificent in its simplicity. This Italian dish is all about the marriage of briny clams bathed in a garlicky wine sauce with the pure taste of pasta. Prepare the sauce while the pasta is cooking—you want the linguine nice and hot when you add it to the pan. Kosher salt 1 pound linguine 1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil 4 garlic cloves, peeled and minced 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes 2 dozen littleneck clams, scrubbed 2/3 cup dry white wine 2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice 3 tablespoons unsalted butter Freshly ground black pepper 1/4 cup freshly minced parsley
Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the pasta and cook until barely al dente, about 1 minute or so less than the package’s recommendation (it will finish cooking in the sauté pan). In a large sauté pan (make sure it has a lid) over medium, heat the olive oil. Add the garlic and red pepper flakes and cook until the garlic is fragrant but not browned, about 1 to 2 minutes. Raise the heat to medium-high. Add the clams and the wine, cover and cook, frequently shaking the pan by the handle, until the clams open, about 5 to 7 minutes. MAKING MAGIC AT
By Jason Frye | Photography by Jack Upton
T
he guitar player presides over the impromptu dance floor at MoJo’s on the Harbor, waving one hand over his head. The notes of his last strum hum in the summer air. “You know the words. Do you remember when we used to sing. . ..” With that, he launches into the sha la la la refrain in his bouncy, acoustic rendition of Brown Eyed Girl and a good part of the crowd does know the words, and they join in loudly and just a little off key. Kids dance in the space between tables or in the laps of their grownups, who bob and sway in their seats, and at nearly every table the conversation is interrupted by at least one person singing along. This is the scene at MoJo’s just about every summer night. The breeze blissfully cool, the vacationers happy to be away from home, the island residents glad to be here, at home. From where I sit on the upper deck at MoJo’s, I have the perfect view. On one side, Old Baldy glowing in the setting sun; on the other side, the twinkling harbor; below me, the buzz of conversation and laughter and music. I eat another hush puppy, sip my beer and lean over the rail. A man and woman circulate among the tables, shaking hands, clapping backs, laughing with the guests. His name’s John Pitera and she’s his wife, Andrea, and together they own MoJo’s. All night John’s been stopping at tables to chat with visitors new to Bald Head Island as well as returning vacationers on their annual pilgrimage, greeting his resident regulars at the door, and bringing out a drink or bussing a table. Andrea’s been seating table after table, answering questions about the menu, delivering baskets of calamari and colorful plates of sushi. They’re tireless and their energy is infectious, leaving every MoJo’s guest with a wider grin than they wore before they arrived.
When John and Andrea first came to Bald Head Island, they had no idea they’d be living here full time, much less running a restaurant. On that first visit in 2000, the Piteras found magic here. They found it in the way the forest and sea, sky and marsh interact to make a place like no other. Then in the people here, both the intrepid full-time residents and seasonal visitors. Soon they felt the magic working in them and they were called back, building a home and becoming full-timers, leaving mainland life behind. “There’s a change that comes over you here,” says John. “They say it’s ‘island time,’ but it’s more than that,” adds Andrea. “Much more,” John continues. “It’s a sense of belonging. You belong to the island and it belongs to you. Surrounded by this incredible nature and coming across all these great people, you just 82

“OUR GOAL WAS SIMPLE: TO MAKE THE FOOD AS GOOD AS THE LOCATION,” ANDREA SAYS. AND THE REST IS HISTORY. feel that you’re part of something very special.” You hear that a lot from people on Bald Head Island. Because things slow down, everyone gives themselves to the ebb and flow of the island. Suddenly you have the time to explore every corner because every corner is your corner. It’s your patch of beach, your stretch of marsh to explore, your path through the maritime forest. Your sunrise. Your sunset. Your time. Your place. The Piteras felt this ownership, too. It’s part of what brought them here permanently, but it’s also the thing that motivated them to purchase one of the most beloved spots on the island, Eb & Flo’s, the ever-popular steam bar and seafood joint that operated in the harbor for nearly 20 years. “We ate at Eb & Flo’s on our first visit here and were hooked. We loved the view, we liked the potential of the place, but felt it lacked something,” says Andrea. “We started to talk about what this place could become.” A number of half-serious, wine-by-the-fire conversations led to the idea of purchasing Eb & Flo’s and putting their own stamp on it. “I’d retired and played all the golf and croquet I could handle,” says John. “I guess I take after my father—he’s 97, retired at 65, then started a business at 80—so we started looking at getting into the restaurant business more seriously.”
At first, the idea of buying Eb & Flo’s was a bit of a lark, but after crunching the numbers and looking at it realistically, the idea started to make sense. John and his brother liked what they saw, but Andrea, driven by her knowledge of the restaurant business, had some reservations. She warmed to the idea as she thought of transforming the restaurant to fit her vision: napkins instead of a roll of paper towels on the table; good wine and real wine glasses; a menu filled with the food they love, food that speaks of friends and family and togetherness. “Our goal was simple: to make the food as good as the location,” Andrea says. And the rest is history.
“You’re my, my brown eyed girl,” sings a voice beside me. I know she’s not singing to me—my beard and blue eyes are my chief clues—so I turn to see just who is being serenaded. A grandmother holds her granddaughter by the hands, tiny wrinkled fingers clutching larger wrinkled fingers, and bounces her to the music. At every chorus, she sings with the sort of exuberance that can’t be faked, and the baby coos, laughs and molds her face into the smile she’s learning. It’s like this all throughout MoJo’s—parents and kids, haven 85

extended families, couples on a getaway, packs of bachelorettes and groomsmen, golfers and anglers all at their tables enjoying themselves. The perfect summer evening, the sound of boats in the harbor, the plates of food eagerly shared, the music, the drinks, all coming together to create the sense of joy that permeates the place. This mood transforms everyone who walks in.
S
everal things changed when the Piteras took over the restaurant, the first of which was the menu. Dishes were dropped from the menu, and recipes were modified to reflect fresh flavors and seasonality. Thanks to John’s heritage, Italian selections were added. There’s a sushi bar. They even offer soft-serve ice cream from a whimsical “Little Red Trailer” on the grounds. And a covered deck was added to accommodate rehearsal dinners, wedding receptions, and other special events. But the most noticeable change to islanders and visitors was to the name—Eb & Flo’s was replaced by Mojo’s. The name was inspired by their grandchildren, Morgan and John. “Morgan and John came to visit every summer. They absolutely loved this place,” says John. “It was their magic place,” adds Andrea. Was. On July 4, 2007, John and Andrea got a phone call in the middle of the night with terrible news on the other end. There’d been an accident. Morgan and John had been killed in a car crash. The community of Bald Head Island residents rallied around the Piteras during this tragic time; a contingent of 30 flew to Connecticut to support the whole family at the memorial services, 86
and when John and Andrea returned, they found love and support at every turn. “You know, it wouldn’t have honored them for us to live a life of sadness. The only way we could truly show our love for our grandkids was to carry on and live great lives. That’s how we can honor them, that’s the best way we can keep their memory alive,” Andrea says. A few years later, when the couple bought Eb & Flo’s, they changed the name to MoJo’s, a combination of their grandchildren’s names. “The perfect tribute,” according to Andrea. “Morgan and John, they brought a lot of joy to a lot of people. In this restaurant, we try to do the same thing, and by all accounts we do. And that brings us joy, to be sure they’re remembered,” John says. The restaurant stands as Morgan and John’s legacy. The Piteras treat guests like old friends, welcoming them not to a place of business, but to an extension of their home. “We want you to have fun, to party, to let loose a little bit. We want the kids to enjoy themselves, the adults, too,” he says. Any given summer day or night, you’ll find just that: the place is packed with happy, laughing guests sharing a meal, sharing a moment. In many ways, it’s the embodiment of the heart and soul of this island.
The spirit of Eb & Flo’s is very much still a part of MoJo’s. The steampot is still on the menu and the emphasis on coastal cuisine remains. The staff’s funny and friendly. The harbor view is still spectacular. Even so, MoJo’s has taken on a culture of its own. Standing at the bar, it’s evident. Two large glass containers stand behind the bar filled with the fun (and alcoholic and delicious) punch of the week; there’s a drink menu filled with interesting, flavorful cocktails; the taps are all good beer; and overhead, the rafters are littered with dollar bills. As I look up—and around, they’re everywhere—I see a staggering amount of currency taped, stapled, pinned, and otherwise stuck to the walls, ceiling and fixtures of the bar. People have signed and dated, marked with collegiate pride, doodled on, highlighted, scribbled over, and otherwise branded as their own all sorts of currency. Singles, fives, 10s and even the occasional 20 marked up. “Look at that,” John says as he makes his rounds. “People come back the next year looking for the one they did.” I guess that’s the sense of belonging that MoJo’s imparts. You’ve left your mark on the wall (even if it is a $5 where you’ve carefully transformed Honest Abe into Bill Murray); you went home with memories of good times here. You danced on the deck, sang karaoke in the bar, had a drink with the breeze ruffling your hair, sat and ate and laughed with friends. It’s your place now, too, just how John and Andrea would want it.
“WE WANT YOU TO HAVE FUN, TO PARTY, TO LET LOOSE A LITTLE BIT.”

It’s 8:30 in the morning, and the fishermen are lined up along
Bald Head Island’s East Beach, casting nets for bait, rigging tackle, and sizing up the surroundings. After a week of unseasonably warm weather, a mild cold front has come through, dialing the skies up to a vivid blue, and dropping the temperature down to more typical October conditions. Close to the Cape Fear Point, a group of four boys stands at the ready to catch fish. Not just any fish, mind you, but the bluefish that will put them in the running for a prize in the inaugural Bluefish Bonanza, a family-friendly fishing tournament hosted by the Bald Head Island Chamber of Commerce.
“We’re pretty excited about the tournament,” says outgoing Maxwell Montgomery, 10, when I approach him. “Me and Sam, we usually goof around a lot, but we’re trying to be serious.” “Yeah,” nods his friend, Sam Carpenter, age 9. “This is what my brother taught me: When you catch the fish, you yank it up,” says Sam, making an upward motion with his fishing pole. “It’s a really good feeling when the fish hits the hook,” he says, a smile spreading across his entire face. Sam’s brother, Gil Carpenter, 12, and his friend, Hugh Coffin, also 12, are the experts of the group, and seem to know more about fishing than most grown men. “I’m thinking that we shouldn’t cast our lines past the surf,” says Gil, gesturing his rod toward the water. “There’s a hole where the bluefish, red drum and flounder collect near the Cape.” “When the tide changes and the baitfish come in closer to shore, the bluefish will follow them in,” says Hugh, who has obviously studied these things. “We’re trying to put the bait in that hole where the bluefish are hiding,” reiterates Gil. These boys mean business. I ask them about their chances. “I know they’re out there,” says Gil. “They’ve been hitting our bait all morning.” “You see, bluefish have really sharp teeth,” explains Hugh. “They’ll bite your bait right in half.” Both boys are from Charlotte, N.C., where they say they do a fair amount of freshwater fishing, but both say they prefer saltwater fishing. “I like that there’s more varieties of fish in the ocean, and I like to eat flounder a lot,” says Hugh. “Flounder, for sure,” agrees Gil. “I love flounder.” A few yards away, Sam and Maxwell chase each other across the beach, their unmanned poles stuck into the sand, lines straight out in the water. Eric Villamater, Ray Talabis and Nick Villamater enjoy the sunshine and some r-and-r.
Just up the way, directly above the Point, three
generations of fishermen enjoy a biscuit, coffee and some camaraderie. From the looks of things, this is not their first rodeo. “I’ve probably been over here on Bald Head Island fishing a hundred times,” says Justin Trujillo of Wilmington, N.C., confirming my suspicions. “It’s my favorite place to fish in the area, mainly because of the shoals,” he says, referring to Frying Pan Shoals, which extend 20 miles or so from Cape Fear, bringing treacherous conditions for sailors, but ideal circumstances for surf fishing. Today Justin is fishing with his dad, Steve Trujillo, and his nephew, Christopher Seekford, 14. “This is my third or fourth time fishing on Bald Head,” says Christopher. “Here and Cape Hatteras are my two favorite places to fish. It’s a lot calmer and a lot less crowded here.” I ask to peek in their cooler, promising not to let the competition know what they’ve caught. Justin kindly obliges, lifting the lid to show a 15” bluefish lying across the ice. It’s a good start, but he’s not satisfied yet. “Gentlemen, it’s 9:22 a.m. We have six hours left to catch the winning fish,” says Justin, giving me my cue that we should leave them to it. “Good luck and thanks,” I say.
(Opposite page, clockwise from top) Twins Curt and Kyle Hagan hold up a drum and two blues; three generations of fishermen, Steve Trujillo, Justin Trujillo and Christopher Seekford, enjoy a return trip to the island; Curt Hagan and Rob Hagan survey the surf; Shannon Hagan catches some rays.
“Any time,” says Justin, his eyes already turned back to the surf. ••• Rounding the Cape and moving up South Beach, I run into other long-time lovers of the island: Rob Hagan, the brother of yearround island property owner Diane Mesaris, his 17-year-old twin sons Curt and Kyle, and 22-year-old daughter Shannon. “We’ve visited for years, and fish every time we come down here,” says Rob, who lives in Winston-Salem, N.C. “We all love it,” says Shannon, flashing a radiant smile. Her brothers are more than happy to show me what they’ve caught so far—a beautiful red drum and two modest-sized bluefish. The drum won’t count toward the tournament—this year only bluefish qualify—but that minor detail doesn’t make the catch any less exciting. Even from 30 yards away, you can tell the next group of fishermen is making the most of the day, laughing, talking, and even managing a little fishing. As I walk up, Eric Villamater stands to warmly greet me, shaking hands and sharing his story. A resident of Lutherville, Md., he and his family have been coming to Bald Head Island since 2002. A few years ago, they purchased a home in Harbour Village, a decision Eric says he would make all over again. “My brother is an attorney and I’m in financial services, so we go pretty hard all the time,” says Eric. “We come here to heal,” he says, putting his arm around Ray Talabis and Eric Villamater, while posing for a picture. “We come here to heal,” he repeats. haven 119
(Clockwise from left) Logan, Ashley and Hunter Freedman take a quick break from fishing; The Freedmans, along with grandparents Alice and Trig Horton, work the lines; Hunter accepts the Pee Wee Award for biggest bluefish from Steve Henson.
By now the sun
is high in the sky. As I make my way to the imaginary line where South Beach and West Beach meet, a cargo ship headed to the port of Wilmington creates a dramatic backdrop for dozens more families fishing. Overhead, a B-17 Bomber passes with its engines roaring and everyone stops to look up. The vintage World War II plane, offering tours from nearby Oak Island Airport, has made hourly loops over the island for the past two days, its remarkable presence made that much more striking by the piercing blue sky behind it. ••• With the 3:30 p.m. lines-out-of-the-water deadline fast approaching, I reach the last family fishing along West Beach. Logan Freedman, 6, and her little brother, Hunter, age 4, are working their rods with the help of their mom, Ashley Freedman, of Durham, N.C., and their grandparents, longtime island property owners Alice and Trig Horton. “I can show you my flounder,” Logan calls out. 120
“Honey, we already took it up to the house,” says Ashley. “It was this big,” promises Logan, extending her arms as wide as they can go. Shortly after I leave, Hunter, with only a little help, manages to land the only bluefish of the day caught by a fisherman age five or under. The catch qualifies him, we learn later that evening at the awards banquet and fish fry, for the Pee Wee Grand Prize. Now, though, he’s enjoying hanging out with his grandparents, running up and down the sand with his sister, and taking frequent breaks to snuggle his mom in a beach chair. “As you can see, we’re making it a real family affair,” says Ashley, just as I turn to go. No matter how many fish you catch, and whether you win a prize like Hunter did, or not, all in all, not a bad way to spend a day at the beach. Make plans to have your own family join us for the 2nd Annual Bluefish Bonanza, held on Bald Head Island October 16-17, 2015. TURN OFF. TUNE OUT. DROP IN. By Jason Frye The island told me it was time for a break when first my digital camera battery ran dry, then my phone wouldn’t post a picture of the marsh on Instagram (and died trying), then I discovered by backup phone charger needed a charge. At first, it was no big deal. I couldn’t live-tweet my dinner, post the perfect marsh panorama to Pinterest, or make my Facebook friends jealous with a stunning sunset shot. So what? Then I had a moment, a true modern-day “If a tree falls in the woods” dilemma. If I don’t post a picture of my weekend away to Facebook, did it even happen? Crazy talk, I know, but in the moment it felt like a valid question. I reminded myself that I came here for me, to recharge my battery, to get away from all that digital noise. It was then and there that I decided it was time for a digital detox. I got in my cart, took my phone and camera back to the house, and left them on the table. Walking back to the cart, I realized I stepped a little easier, felt a little lighter. I was free. I could go to the beach and never worry that the next wave would whisk my phone from my hand and deliver it to a watery grave. I could strip off my shirt and go for a swim if I wanted. I could take a nap on the sun-warmed sand and not worry that I was going to drop and forget my overpriced pocket computer like some futuristic bit of beach detritus. Honestly, I thought I’d have more separation anxiety being without my smartphone, which, let’s face it, jingles an alarm to wake me in the morning, keeps me entertained at the gym, puts me in communication throughout the day, provides the soundtrack to my commute, and informs me of obscure TV and movie facts as I watch some late-night show. I puttered around the island, stopping a time or two so I could take a picture of the way the light filtered through the live-oak canopy and shone on a particular palmetto frond before realizing I didn’t have a single camera on me. If I wanted to record this instance, I had to do so with my mind. I had to exist in the moment and tune in to all that was around me. But it was hard to break the habit of snapping a shot, sending it into the Internet ether, and then measuring my enjoyment by how many people liked, shared, favorited, pinned, posted, retweeted and commented on it. Why do I need the approval of my friends (and my “friends”) in order to enjoy a couple of days away from the desk? I decided that I didn’t, so I stopped thinking about likes and pins and
instead tried to simply be present in the moment. I closed my eyes, took a breath, opened them and stood in the edge of the forest, observing this palmetto closely. The sun on its spikes. The varying hues of green on each frond. How light and shadow made a pattern on its broad spray. Man, it would look good with the Hefe filter and I could bump up the color a little. And with the right caption—“Palm, Sunday” or “Meanwhile on BHI…”—and hashtag—#islandgetaway or #mylifeisbetterthanyours—it could really be something. No. Stop. Shut it down. Be here. Tune out the digital distractions and be here. It was no small struggle, but I pushed the thoughts aside and watched as the wind shifted the branches above, moved the palmetto, and tickled the hair on my neck. A cart drove by and left in its wake a silence that was soon filled with birdcall and the far-off sound of something moving through the leaves. That’s when it hit me. No photo could capture this. No video would do it justice. No number of likes would make me enjoy this moment more. All the clever hashtags in the world wouldn’t matter. I needed to tune out all the things to see that. Back on the marsh, I watched an osprey circle the creek. I waited for her to plunge, dropping into the water and emerging with food for herself or her young. She never did. What did happen was this. Two women and a pack of kids came down the path, stopping to watch the osprey. They passed a pair of binoculars from person to person, murmuring “ooh” and “aah” and “cool.” Then one young girl raised her phone, holding it out in front of her, tracking the bird in an attempt to snap a Facebookable shot. “Let’s put that away right now, ok,” said one of the women. “Let’s just be here in this moment, no phones, no distractions.” With a slight hesitance, the girl put the phone back in her pocket. The binoculars made another round through the group, and the osprey, she roosted somewhere in the trees along Middle Island. We all dropped into the landscape, were swallowed by the trees and expanse of sky doming the marsh. That’s part of any meaningful experience with nature, dropping in, disappearing, becoming part of the place. It’s easy to do on Bald Head Island, but it’s even easier once you free yourself from the phone, the text, the email, the buzz and electric hum of daily life. Try it. Turn it off. Take a breath. Relax.
